Attack on Judiciary: APC berates PDP, Atiku

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the attack on the Judiciary by main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate in this year’s general election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

APC said they were being haunted by the ghost of their inglorious past.

Reacting to the comments by the PDP and Atiku over recent court verdicts that upturned some electoral victories of the party’s members, the ruling party said Atiku and the PDP “have taken their attack of our judicial system to a whole new and unacceptable level of contemptuous recklessness”.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, APC condemned the opposition for making what it called baseless allegations that the Judiciary was under pressure from an imaginary committee set up to secure judicial outcomes in favour of the ruling party.

Morka said: “Ours is a progressive party that subscribes unreservedly to time-honoured fundamental constitutional principle of separation of powers and abiding commitment to the independence of the Judiciary.

“The PDP is bereft of these values and, sadly, they cannot imagine a ruling party with a modus operandi that is quite unlike its crooked, ruthless, lawless old self in power. APC is not the PDP and should not be tainted with the PDP’s indelible dishonour and disloyalty to the rule of law and constitutional democracy.”

Obaseki, APC senator disagree over Edo govt’s spending of N7b on diesel

Edo state governor, Godwin Obaseki, and the representative of Edo Central Senatorial District, Monday Okpebholo, have disagreed over the Edo government’s spending of N7 billion on diesel in three months to fuel Edo City Transport Service’s (ECTS’) palliative buses.

The senator, who is a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also accused Obaseki of misappropriating the N5 billion petroleum subsidy removal allocated to Edo state by the Federal government.

Okpebholo spoke on Tuesday, November 21, at the 25th priestly anniversary and book launch of Very Rev. Fr. Theophilus Idebaneria Itaman at Lumen Christi International High School, Uromi in Edo Central senatorial district.

He said: “The wasteful spending by Obaseki’s administration on diesel could have been spent to fix the terrible roads in Edo State.

“I am calling for accountability, honesty, transparency, and efficiency in the allocation of Edo State’s resources by Obaseki.”

The senator, who donated ten laptop computers at the book launch, urged Edo residents, especially the electorate, to vote for the eventual governorship candidate of APC during the September 21, 2024 election, to ensure good governance.

Edo governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Andrew Okungbowa, however, described the allegations as very unfortunate but hinted that the Edo government would soon address a news conference on the matter.

  • Bayelsa: PDP knocks APC over attacks on ex-President Jonathan

Bayelsa: PDP knocks APC over attacks on ex-President Jonathan

Bayelsa state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lambasted the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state for attacking former President Goodluck Jonathan over personal comments he made during a visit to Governor Douye Diri last Friday.

The state publicity secretary, PDP, Ebiye Ogoli, in a statement on Monday, November 20, accused the APC of twisting the former President’s comments in order to pour out its frustrations after losing the November 11 2023 governorship election in the state.

Ogoli said: “For clarity, His Excellency, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan while congratulating the Governor during the visit, had said: ‘I told myself that if Diri loses this election, I might consider moving my mother to Abuja’.”

The PDP spokesman, therefore, wondered how in an election contested by candidates of 16 political parties, the APC had to misconstrue Jonathan’s comment as if it was directed at the party or its candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva.

Ogoli stated: “For emphasis, the former President never mentioned the APC or its candidate throughout the course of the visit.

“Since his forthright comment appeared in the media, the APC and its array of faceless, contemptible, lick-spittle groups have been inconsolable, acting like a forcefully weaned baby.

“Placed in proper context, Dr. Jonathan’s comment alluded to and reflected the peace, security and stability that Bayelsa State has witnessed under the Governor Diri administration, which is a fact generally acknowledged by residents of the state.

“The Bayelsa APC so-called leaders and groups, who are actually lackeys of the party’s governorship candidate, continue to make themselves a laughing stock for their intemperate and disrespectful tirades against Nigeria’s icon of democracy.

“If anyone is suffering any sort of frustration or mental crisis, it is the Bayelsa APC and its candidate that are yet to come to terms with the shellacking they got on November 11.

“We advise them to lick their wound with some decorum and not misdirect their anger towards an innocent statesman who spoke truth from his heart.

“Even beyond Bayelsa, the violent character and disposition of the Bayelsa APC leaders and their candidates in the last election is well-known and documented.”

He said that if Bayelsans had any fear, it was that the state might return to the infamous days of Famou Tangbe, cultism, cult wars and attacks on political opponents, etc. if Governor Diri was not re-elected.

Ogoli added: “So, the electorate was not only determined to protect their votes but to also ensure that the governor was returned to Creek Haven. The final result was the true reflection of the mindset of Bayelsans and what they indeed wanted. The outpouring of celebration and congratulatory messages equally confirmed this. We wonder why Sylva and his cohorts quarrel with this truth.

“Our party again uses this opportunity to appreciate former President Jonathan for his gracious endorsement and unflinching support for our candidate as well as the Bayelsa people for standing solidly behind the PDP and the Prosperity Administration.”

The new members of state statutory commissions, including those of the State Judicial Service Commission, were sworn in by the Deputy Governor, Prince Kola Adewusi.

The swearing-in followed the confirmation of the nominees as forwarded to the House of Assembly by Governor Adeleke. APC kicks as Diri coasts home to victory in Bayelsa

Bayelsa Governor and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Candidate, Douye Diri, has won five out of the six local government areas’ results so far declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) amid protest by the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The results of the governorship election, which started on Saturday, are being collated at the INEC head office in Yenagoa by the state Collation Officer, Prof. Kuta Farouk, who is the Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Minna.

Diri has so far won Kolokuma-Opokuma,  Yenagoa, Ogbia, Sagbama and Ekeremor while his closest rival, Chief Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won Nembe Local Government Area.

The collation was adjourned till 12noon on Monday to announce results from two remaining local government areas of Brass and Southern Ijaw.

INEC announced that there were issues with Brass and Southern Ijaw councils adding that collation for.some areas in Brass had been brought to Yenagoa.

The commission added that in Southern Ijaw election continued in some wards on Sunday morning insisting that the results would be ready for collation on Monday.

Diri has so far garnered 137,909 votes in the six LGAs announced to defeat Sylva, who polled 68,154 votes while Udengs Eradiri of Labour Party came a distant third with 703 votes.

But the collation centre was charged  following the protest by the APC agent, Dennis Otiotio, who complained that 27,968 votes scored by APC in Nembe were cancelled by the local government area collation officers.

He said acting on the directive of the REC, the LGA officer cancelled results collated in four wards of Nembe.

Otiotio insisted that the officer acted illegally as he had no right to cancel results already collated at the units and wards of any local council already posted to the I-REV.

He complained that the collation of results of all LGAs won by APC were forcefully moved to the INEC office in Yenagoa while areas won by the PDP were collated at the ward levels.

Otiotio held to his grounds that the disposition of the state collation Officer suggested that he did not want the APC agent at the collation centre.

But Prof. Farouk took exception to the comments and clarified that he only wanted all agents to document their complaints officially insisting that the centre had no power to resolve their issues.

The agent of the PDP, Chief Talford Ongolo, countered Otiotio saying the REC had the power to cancel collated results in areas marred by violence, bypass of the BVAs and abduction of INEC officials.

Tension had built up around the head office of INEC immediately the commission concluded preparation to begin collation of results.

Supporters, loyalists and members of the PDP  stormed the area in their numbers to protest results from some local government areas where they claimed there was no election.

The protesters blocked  the Swali Road leading to INEC office to stop the commission from accepting the results of Nembe Bassambiri, which they claimed were manipulated.

Bayelsa Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Dambo Biriyai, (SAN), alleged that election did not take place in Nembe Bassambiri.

He called on INEC REC in the state, Mr Obo Effanga, and Southsouth Commissioner for INEC May Agbamuche-Mbu to reject the results.

He claimed that PDP members, who visited their country home of Bassambiri, were prevented entry by the combined team of the police and APC thugs.

The development led to massive deployment of armed security operatives around the INEC office.

Over four Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) belonging to the military and the police were used to block the entrance of the Swali Road.

The armed operatives vigilantly watched the area and prevented people without genuine business from entering the INEC office.

But the supporters of Diri kept vigil around the INEC office refusing to leave the area.

Some deadly-looking youths were seen moving around the INEC office but were not allowed by the security agents to enter the commission’s premises.

Diri’s supporters danced to the song wafting from huge speakers installed in one of the  governor’s campaign vehicle.

Matters took a twist when a truck drove into the area with hundreds of plastic chairs for the fatigued protesters to sit down and continue to occupy the area.

Despite the announcement that collation would continue the next day, the protesters, who were majorly youths continue to occupy the road.

Diri won his Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area scoring 18,465 votes against his closest rival of the APC, Chief Timipre Sylva, who got 5349 while Labour Party (LP) had 22.

In Ogbia, the LGA of former President Goodluck Jonathan and the Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Diri won with a small margin.

The goyvernor got 18,435 votes against Sylva, who polled 16,319 and Udengs Eradiri of the LP, who scored 57 votes.

In Yenagoa Local Government Area, Diri won with a wide margin scoring 37,777 votes against Sylva, who got 14,534 and Eradiri, who polled 244 votes.

But Sylva won his maternal Nembe Local Government Area with wide margin of 22,248 while Diri got 4,556 and LP 113.

But in Ekeremor, the LGA of the Minister of State for Petroleum, Heineken Lokpobiri, the PDP Diri won with 23,172 to beat Sylva, who got 8,445 votes and LP that polled 50.

Bayelsa guber: APC frowns at moving collation of Brass LGA results to Yenagoa

Less than 24 hours after the governorship election in Bayelsa state, the All Progressives Congress (APC), has raised the alarm over alleged attempts by Governor Duoye Diri and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unlawfully and unduly pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to move collation of results of Brass Local Government Area to Yenagoa, the State capital.

The party in a statement by its national publicity secretary, Felix Morka in Abuja on Sunday, November 12, said the move was a calculated attempt to manipulate the result of the votes in favour of the PDP.

The statement read: “Our attention has been drawn to brazen efforts by Governor Duoye Diri and his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to unlawfully and unduly pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to move collation of results of Brass Local Government Area to Yenagoa, the State capital.

“Brass, remarkably, is a major stronghold of our great party where the people have voted massively for our candidate, Timipre Sylva. The move is a calculated attempt to manipulate the result of the votes in favour of the PDP.

“INEC must stand its ground and collate the votes of Brass LGA in Brass as mandated by law before moving to Yenagoa for the final state collation.”

The party also vehemently condemned Governor Diri’s fervent incitement of violent protests at the Peace Park in Yenagoa.

Morka noted that “this is utterly irresponsible and a violation of his oath of office as Governor. The people of Bayelsa deserve to vote and have the results of the election declared in peace and safety.

“Governor Diri must stand down on his attempt to set Bayelsa state ablaze and uphold the important duty of his office as the Chief Security Officer of Bayelsa state.”

The state chairman of the party, Calistus Ihejiagwa, who made the allegations in a statement he issued on Saturday afternoon, said that the security agents were aiding the APC members to hijack and divert the materials.

“They have about 10 Hilux vehicles with police, army, and NSDC. They blocked the roads and are giving APC cover as they rig the election

“Secondly Governor Hope Uzodimma is moving around here in Ideato North LGA with heavy security men. Right now, he is at the INEC office in Urualla inside the council headquarters manipulating INEC people.”

But the spokesperson for the APC in the state, Cajetan Duke, said there was no truth in the allegation.

He insisted that the APC members are conducting them well in the election.
