  • How plot to impose Lawan as APC candidate was scuttled

How plot to impose Lawan as APC candidate was scuttled

The plot to impose former Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the 2023 All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus presidential candidate collapsed because it was a ruse, the biography of former President Muhammadu Buhari has revealed.

Book author Dr. Charles Omole who gave insights into the succession politics said the plot by some influential people close to the former leader was quietly but firmly stopped at the highest level.

The 600-paged book, which was launched in Abuja on Monday, also revealed how the Naira redesign was sold to Buhari ahead of electioneering.

A detailed account by former Inspectors-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu and Usman Alkali Baba, as well as Buhari’s former Chief Security Officer (CSO), Abubakar Idris, captured in the book titled: “From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Suhari,” revealed the manipulating tendencies of some individuals who attempted to misuse the authority of the Presidency and security services to influence the outcome of the primary in Abuja.

On the eve of the shadow poll scheduled for Eagle Square, tension engulfed the APC National Secretariat and campaign offices of major aspirants as news filtered that Buhari had endorsed the former Senate President as successor.

Although there was jubilation in the Abuja residence of the former number three citizen, members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party challenged the former chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, who informed them about the endorsement, for proofs.

Amid the anxiety, former Abia State Governor Orji Kalu and some party chieftains came on air to defend the consensus candidacy.

Miffed by the inexplicable news of endorsement, protesting APC governors stormed Aso Villa to demand confirmation from Buhari, who denied anointing any preferred candidate.

After the close of shadow poll, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was elected candidate, reflected on the puroorted endorsement of Adamu, saying that he was nursing the wound of defeat during the primary.

IG Alkali Baba, who was interviewed by Omole in the course of gathering information for the biography, narrated how security agencies were mobilised for the ‘Lawan project.’

He recalled that on the morning before primary, the influential people approached the heads of the major security agencies – the IGP, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), claiming to be conveying a presidential order.

The former IG said the alleged instruction was for the deployment of security forces to “install Senator Lawan as the APC Presidential candidate, as the consensus candidate,” adding that a meeting was even scheduled to give effect to what was presented as a directive from the former president.

But, Alkali Baba, who refused buy into the project, told his colleagues that he would not participate in the plot, prompting the trio of security chiefs to seek an urgent audience with Buhari to verify the claim directly.

Omole stated in the book that “when they were escorted in, the IG led the way.”

After briefing the President on security arrangements for the convention, the former IGP said they asked the President pointedly: “Is there any other instruction, sir?”

The late Buhari’s response was unambiguous; he had given no such order.

According to the author, the moment of truth came when Alkali Baba informed the former leader the reason for their emergency visit.

The former police boss told Buhari that from his residence, which was located next to Lawan’s official guest house, he could hear jubilation in the neighbourhood over reports that Buhari had endorsed the former Senate President as the candidate.

“The President laughed,” Alkali Baba recalled, before making his position unmistakably clear. He said the president who insisted that he had not anointed anyone, repeated what he had consistently said in public and private that Nigerians should choose, and the wishes of party members must not be interfered with.

Alkali Baba also recalled that outside the President’s inner office, those who had attempted to choreograph the narrative were waiting.

But the former IG said he informed them plainly that Buhari had no preferred candidate, adding that there would be no manipulation from the Villa through the security services.

Omole said: “The attempted misrepresentation died where it should – at the threshold of a President’s conscience.”

The book also noted that former DSS Director-General, Yusuf Magaji Bichi, later confirmed the same sequence of events during interviews for the book.

The episode, according to the biography, illustrates how the late Buhari’s trust was sometimes exploited by those around him, who misrepresented his intentions without his knowledge.

The biography also revisits the naira redesign, which was one of the most controversial policies of the Buhari administration.

According to the former CSO, Abubakar Idris, the naira redesign did not begin as a political strategy.

He said long before the policy was unveiled, monetary authorities had approached Buhari with a proposal to domesticate currency production, end reliance on foreign printing and build national capacity for minting and printing Nigeria’s currency.

According to the author, Buhari found the proposals very compelling.

Idris revealed that Buhari, who supported the idea and approved funding for the upgrade, insisted that local capacity be developed.

“Somewhere along that path,” Idris recounted, “the redesign proposal emerged,” pitched as a means to sanitise cash flows and undercut vote-buying.

He said the rationale resonated with Buhari’s long-held desire to clean up systemic monetary dysfunction, adding that by the time concerns arose in a section of the security apparatus that the policy’s political and operational costs were spiralling, and that some promoters had “their own game”, the process had advanced too far.

Idris added: “Samples had been printed. Timelines had been set. Not every policy can be retracted elegantly once the machinery engages.”

The CSO said the former President realised “later than anyone would have liked” that the reform was being weaponised beyond its declared scope, although its original foundations lay in institutional reform rather than electoral calculation.

Beyond the primary and the monetary policy, the book paints a broader portrait of Buhari’s leadership style through the testimonies of the police chiefs.

Former IG Mohammed Adamu described his first meeting with Buhari as one defined by clarity and restraint.

“Bring crime down decisively,” he said the late Buhari told him, stressing that the job was for the country, not personalities.

In a lighter moment, the President joked that Adamu “had no stomach yet,” an advice that he should not let office to inflate his character.

Adamu recalled the late leader’s insistence on process, noting that memos were read “top to bottom,” often in the President’s presence, with corrections made where necessary.

He added: “Most of my memos, he would take action immediately.”

Adamu recalled that that insistence on verification proved crucial, adding that he was able to handle the case of a former governor who arrived with a list of officers to be posted, claiming it was Buhari’s directive.

Adamu said he took the list directly to the President.

He recalled that “Buhari’s answer was unsparing,” stressing that the former President, who denied sending anyone, warned that the IG would be personally held responsible if anything went wrong.

Adamu said the list was immediately discarded.

On #EndSARS, Adamu said Buhari’s standing order was clear: protect life, treat citizens with civility, and rely on non-lethal means.

He clarified that firearms were to be a last resort. Adamu attributed the few cases of police shootings recorded during the protests to the Presidential directive.

The author said: “Adamu’s core memory is of Buhari’s standing instruction for policing the protests: treat citizens with civility; avoid loss of life; rely on non-lethal means to disperse where necessary.

“The President’s emphasis aligned with a policing mandate distinct from the military’s: in civil contexts, the police are trained to preserve life, engage, and de-escalate.”

  • ‘2027 elections will be contested on records, ideas’

‘2027 elections will be contested on records, ideas’

Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said it has observed with a mixture of amusement and concern, the growing desperation within the opposition, as Nigeria steadily counts down to 2027 general election.

Spokesman Seye Oladejo said yesterday in a statesman in Ogba, Lagos: ‘’Stripped of ideas, credibility and public trust, the opposition have now resorted to an audacious and shameful demand for political immunity from scrutiny, accountability and consequence.

‘’Unable to defend their records in office or articulate a coherent alternative vision for Nigeria, opposition figures have chosen to cry persecution each time they are confronted with facts, interrogated by public opinion, or held to the same standards they once weaponised against others. They want power without responsibility, ambition without accountability and relevance without performance. That era is long gone.’’

He said the desperation of the opposition had reached a point where it was evident that they were no longer just afraid of accountability, but also afraid of their own shadow.

‘’Haunted by their past actions and public records, they now seek political cover rather than public validation. This fear-driven posture explains the sustained attempt to blackmail the government into conferring an illegal and immoral immunity that has no place in a constitutional democracy.’’

READ ALSO: Insecurity: Why are we defeated?

The statement said: ‘’Let it be clearly stated that the government will neither be blackmailed nor ambushed into granting protection to political actors, who have not earned the trust of Nigerians. Immunity is not a campaign strategy, and persecution narratives will not erase documented failures.

‘’It is indeed ironic that individuals who supervised monumental failures, institutional decay, and the plunder of national assets now seek refuge in manufactured victimhood. The same voices that once applauded investigations, probes and sanctions have suddenly discovered ‘witch-hunts’ the moment the searchlight of accountability beams in their direction. This selective morality exposes not only hypocrisy, but also fear-fear of records, fear of memory and fear of Nigerians.

‘’Nigerians are not oblivious of the track record of those who now pretend to present an ‘alternative.’ The nation remembers where we are coming from and what it costs us to get here. Any so-called alternative that resembles a return to our vomit will be rejected by a discerning voter that has learned, sometimes painfully, from history.’’

Oladejo noted: ‘’As 2027 approaches, Nigerians are no longer interested in emotional blackmail, recycled faces, or political fugitives shopping for platforms that offer protection rather than progress. Democracy does not confer immunity from public interrogation, and opposition status does not translate to sainthood. Those aspiring to lead must first submit themselves to the court of public conscience.

‘’The APC-led government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains focused on the serious business of national renewal-economic stabilisation, security reform, institutional rebuilding, and the repositioning of Nigeria for sustainable growth. While the opposition demands immunity from questions, this administration demands results from itself and accountability from all.

‘’Let it be clearly stated: Nigeria will not mortgage its future to political actors whose primary campaign message is fear of scrutiny. The 2027 elections will be contested on records, ideas, courage and capacity-not on entitlement to immunity.

‘’History is watching. Nigerians are alert. No amount of manufactured outrage will shield failure from judgment.’’

  • APC not behind crises ravaging opposition parties, says IPAC deputy chair

APC not behind crises ravaging opposition parties, says IPAC deputy chair

The newly elected Deputy National Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Hajiya Zainab Abubakar Ibrahim, has absolved the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of any complicity in the various crises affecting opposition political parties.

She said the governing party should not be held responsible for any internal crisis of other political parties.

Ibrahim, who is also the APC Deputy National Women Leader, made this clarification yesterday in Abuja while addressing reporters on the outcome of the IPAC election, which was held on December 8 in Abuja.

Responding to an accusation that the ruling party has been fingered in the instability within most opposition parties in the country, Ibrahim emphatically rejected the allegation, saying: “I do not think APC is responsible for the internal problems of any political party. That is their internal affair.”

She noted that, unlike other parties, APC strictly adheres to the principle of internal democracy.

The IPAC deputy chairperson said this has been the ruling party’s special quality that makes it an attractive and formidable national party, which continues to attract more members from opposition parties and well-meaning Nigerians.

“APC is a formidable national party with representation across all zones. It is the strict adherence to the principle of internal democracy that draws the attention of the people to the party. You cannot stop a moving train. Other parties’ challenges are their responsibility, not that of the APC.”

Clarifying the position of the council on factionalised parties, the IPAC leader said the council was not involved in the running of any political party but only aligned and worked with party leadership recognized by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Ibrahim said: “IPAC relates strictly with INEC. It is the names of party leaders on the INEC portal that IPAC works with. We do not concern ourselves with factional disputes of political parties.”

Shedding light on the just-concluded IPAC election, the deputy chairperson said the adoption of the “twinning formula” in the newly drafted constitution of the council has further entrenched gender inclusivity in the political space of the country.

This, she said, led to the election of three women into the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the council, a development that she claimed was novel to the council.

Under the new constitution, Ibrahim said, “if the Chairman is male, automatically the deputy must be female. Where the secretary is male, automatically the deputy is female, and vice versa”.

She added: “It is now inscribed in the IPAC Constitution that there must always be at least two females in the IPAC Executive. That is what happened.

“On the 8th of December, the election was held. I contested for the position of Deputy National Chairman and another female contested for Deputy National Secretary. These positions were meant strictly for women to contest.

“Today, IPAC now has three women in its Executive, instead of the zero gender inclusion level we previously had. Standing before you now is the Deputy National Chairman of IPAC—the Inter-Party Advisory Council, the umbrella body of all registered political parties in Nigeria.”

  • Dominant APC waits with bated breath

Dominant APC waits with bated breath

Once set in motion, the defections begun months ago to the All Progressives Congress (APC) have become almost unstoppable, an avalanche even. It is not inevitable that a ruling party can withstand divisions simply because it is in office, but after the APC won the third presidential election in a row, and sent opposition parties reeling, the party seemed impregnable to storms. That impregnability has attracted defectors of all kinds, causing the party to grow in weight and gravitas in inverse proportion to the despair afflicting the opposition. The one-way defections will continue apace, though the party is now almost filled to saturation. What should worry the party, however, is not whether it has room for more defections or whether it is nearing the end of its carrying capacity. Indeed, the party may already be unnerved by the almost sepulchral silence in the opposition save occasional eruptions of fiery denunciations over one policy flaw or another misstep by the administration.

Convinced that it has become infeasible to defeat the APC by the pure art or even science of balloting, the opposition has retreated into its shell to store energy and assume a strike position. There is euphoria in the APC, though now tethered by a strange and uncomfortable feeling of anxiety. And conversely, there is despondency in the opposition mitigated by the fact that they have nothing to lose. So, the now clearly dominant and unassailable ruling party must wait with bated breath to see what other weapons the opposition parties have in their armamentarium. The ruling party knows by experience that the opposition are in possession of lethal weapons, for before it won the 2015 elections and assumed office, the APC also wielded deadly weapons and was unabashed in deploying them with fury.

It is not yet known whether the opposition will be an agglomeration of the country’s main opposition parties, but it will not be just the PDP alone. Regardless of how many they are, the APC will worry whether the enemy will fight as one hobgoblin or on many fronts. Should the opposition choose to fight as one man, they might do a lot of damage, having demonstrated how nasty and skewering they can be. If they choose to fight individually and separately, the APC will worry about fighting on many fronts, wondering just how well they can fence off their enemies. The first accusation the opposition is broadcasting everywhere is that the APC is at fundamentally antidemocratic and determined to reverse democratic gains and render Nigeria a one-party state. The campaign will resonate with many people if the ruling party can’t find a bigger and more convincing argument to deflect the hooey.

Fortunately for the APC, and despite former Kaduna State governor Nasir el-Rufai’s mendacities, the opposition will be unable to deploy the religious argument as they did during the 2023 polls. Mallam el-Rufai, now a cipher in the ADC, has tried to both associate with and amplify the argument that the Bola Tinubu administration had caved in to the Christian lobby and filled the higher echelons of government with Christians to the detriment of Muslims. That religious campaign is unlikely to gain traction, not even if it is decked in regional colours. The APC is of course not a pushover in trench warfare, especially if that warfare becomes messy and bloody. Indeed, the ruling party may already have an inkling into what the opposition parties are planning, and just how deep they will plumb to find the filth they need to bespatter the enemy. If the APC is worried, it has done its best so far to conceal that anxiety. But how long it can keep its composure will be known when the campaigns hot up and turn nasty.

From all indications, the opposition will not train their guns on the APC as a party, for the party, as a result of recent defections, is much stronger than it has ever been. Instead, they will face the president squarely. They will bring out their heavy guns, believing that once they destabilise and rob him of his confidence, the job of unseating him and the ruling party would be easier. One stone, they seem to think, would kill two birds. They will go through his INEC filings with a fine-tooth comb once again, and they will go through his records. The slightest inconsistency will be sufficient for them to deploy to maximum advantage. They will not even mind half-truths. The APC may have run rings round the opposition, and has done it with great aplomb, but what they will need to pay particular attention to are the weapons the opposition will deploy against the president, not against the party. The winner would be the one who had anticipated the other more adroitly, and had prepared, like a chess player, answers to puzzles yet to be raised. And if all else fails, why, they will try the often gory terrorism/kidnapping ploy regardless of the censorious gaze of the Americans.

Zulum predicts victory for APC in Borno local government polls

Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed confidence that his party, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), will win the ongoing Local Government elections in the state.

The governor cast his vote at Ajari 006 polling unit in Mafa Ward 2, Mafa Town, the headquarters of Mafa Local Government Area.

“As you are aware, Borno State is an APC-controlled state, and we do not expect any party other than the APC to win this election. Be assured that the APC’s victory here will also reflect in the 2027 general elections, Insha Allah,” Gov. Zulum declared.

He commended the high level of voter participation and described the election as peaceful and free of any major hitches.

The Governor also thanked security agencies for ensuring a secure environment for the conduct of the polls.

APC south-south leaders hail Wike’s courage, drive at 58 birthday

The leadership of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the south-south geopolitical zone has described the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, as a courageous leader, whose uncommon drive for development continue to inspire hope and progress across the region and the nation at large.

This was contained in a goodwill message jointly signed by the APC National Vice Chairman (South- South) Chief Hon. Victor Giadom and the National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, to mark the 58th birthday ceremony of the former Rivers State governor.

Felicitating with Wike, the duo congratulated him, said the FCT Minister is God’s special gift to the good people of the South-South region.

The statement reads, “We join family, friends, associates and well-wishers around the world to celebrate the Hon. Minister and former Governor of Rivers State for his audacious life of service to the nation.

“Chief Nyesom Wike is God’s special gift to the good people of the South-South region whose courageous leadership and uncommon drive for development continue to inspire hope and progress across the region and the nation at large.,”

Eulogising the Minister further, the two APC leaders said, “Fondly hailed as “Mr. Project,” Chief Wike has distinguished himself by his vast accomplishments. His tenure as Governor of Rivers State was marked by transformative investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, housing, and urban renewal, significantly improving service delivery and governance outcomes for the people.

“As Minister of the FCT, he has sustained this record of high achieving performance, driving massive and unprecedented infrastructural development, urban renewal and far-reaching administrative reforms. These include extensive road construction, rail rehabilitation, enhanced land administration, and improved city management in the FCT. Collectively, these interventions have restored the FCT as a super functional modern capital city.”

The duo then commended the Minister’s solid contributions to the successful implementation of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, advancing national development and delivering tangible benefits to citizens.

“On this special day, we wish His Excellency Nyesom Wike continued good health, strength, wisdom, and many more years of purposeful service to our dear country,” the statement concluded

  • Aiyedatiwa’s aide, APC group leader clash over control of Tinubu’s 2027 campaign in Ondo

Aiyedatiwa’s aide, APC group leader clash over control of Tinubu’s 2027 campaign in Ondo

A fresh disagreement has emerged within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, as a senior aide to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Prof. Simidele Odimayo, clashed with a prominent party chieftain Otunba Agboola Kelly over control of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 2027 reelection campaign in the state.

The dispute highlighted growing internal tensions within the party, as key blocs and support groups vie for influence ahead of the next general election.

The clash followed a stakeholders’ meeting in Ore, headquarters of Odigbo Local Government Area, where Prof. Odimayo and other APC leaders insisted that Governor Aiyedatiwa, as the constitutionally recognised state leader, should automatically head Tinubu’s reelection campaign in Ondo once the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) lifts the ban on campaign activities.

“We want President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to make it a matter of compulsion that Governor Aiyedatiwa leads his campaign in Ondo State in the 2027 general elections. We cannot afford to have two leaders in our state, as the governor is the leader of the party. This is what we want in our state during the 2027 general elections,” Odimayo stated, citing resolutions from the meeting.

However, on Saturday, Otunba Kelly, state coordinator of the APC Elders Movement for Tinubu, responded by warning party members against making “provocative statements” that could cause internal friction.

Kelly described Prof. Odimayo as “overzealous,” accusing him of political overreach and attempting to create a crisis to serve personal interests.

“What Simidele Odimayo and his co-travellers are doing is clear – they want to curry favour in Abuja by manufacturing a crisis that does not exist. Their personal ambitions must not be allowed to overheat the polity or sow seeds of disaffection.”

Kelly stressed that Tinubu’s reelection effort is a national project, and independent support groups do not require approval from any individual before mobilising for the President.

He likened the situation to the 2024 Ondo governorship race, where dozens of groups campaigned for Aiyedatiwa without undermining him:

“Just as we had LACO, Friends of Lucky, Aiyedatiwa Vanguard, Youths for Lucky, Women for Aiyedatiwa, and many others during the 2024 election, the same will happen in 2027. These groups will only complement the official campaign structure coordinated by the governor.”

He warned Odimayo and his allies to desist from comments that might threaten the fragile peace within the party.

“The peace and unity currently enjoyed in Ondo APC were hard-won. We will not watch selfish individuals import crisis where none exists,” Kelly added.

He further alleged that the attempt to insist on a “sole leadership structure” for Governor Aiyedatiwa is a reaction to the growing influence of independent support groups allegedly backed by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo (BTO).

“The truth is that the groups sponsored by the Honourable Minister are doing very well across the state. They are projecting Mr. President more aggressively, more visibly, and more effectively than anyone else. The move by Odimayo is simply a response to Tunji-Ojo’s rising influence.”

In a swift reaction, Prof. Odimayo faulted Kelly’s interpretation of the stakeholders meeting, insisting his comments were taken out of context.

According to him, it would be illogical to ask President Tinubu to appoint Aiyedatiwa as campaign leader when the governor is already the automatic leader of the party in the state:

“There is a misrepresentation. I cannot be saying Tinubu should make Aiyedatiwa the campaign leader. He is already the leader of the party in the state by virtue of being governor – just as the President (Tinubu), the party leader at the federal level,” he said.

Odimayo, however, argued that the governor’s popularity and performance naturally make him the rallying point for Tinubu’s 2027 bid.

He maintained that independent support groups exist because of the governor’s performance and do not pose a threat.

“Aiyedatiwa won in all 18 local governments – an unprecedented feat in Ondo State. People love him. Carrying him along will give better votes for President Tinubu in 2027.”

“Every other person campaigning is doing so because Aiyedatiwa is performing. They feel their efforts can help the governor, too,” the governor’s aide added.
