  • Zamfara: Agbakoba questions AGF’s letter to INEC

A former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) president Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN) has urged Attorney-General of the Federation Abubakar Malami (SAN) to withdraw the letter asking the Independent National Electoral Commission  (INEC ) to postpone election in Zamfara State.

The AGF asked INEC to postpone the election to enable the All Progressives Congress (APC) field candidates in the state.

INEC barred APC from fielding contestants for failing to meet up with the deadline for submission of candidates.

Agbakoba argued that if anyone was to make the postponement request, it should be the APC, not the AGF.

He said: “I am shocked by your letter to INEC on the above subject. You are the Attorney-General of the Federation and not the Attorney-General of INEC.

“INEC is an independent institution and cannot take directives from the Federal Government.

“If there is need for the postponement of the Zamfara State election as indicated in your letter, the proper person to request the postponement is the APC.

“In any case, Sections 38 and 39 of the Electoral Act 2010 which your request is based on have nothing to do with postponement of elections.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has at various fora undertaken that the Federal Government will not interfere with INEC. Your letter puts that commitment to question. It is my hope that this letter will be immediately withdrawn.

  • Kwara retirees, pensioners restate commitment APC’s victory

    ….Pledge 100,000 votes

Pensioners and retirees in Kwara state have said they are irrevocably committed to the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in this week Saturday’s and March 2nd general elections.

They also pledged APC would garner nothing less than 100,000 votes from them in the state.

Chairman of the Concerned Retired Kwara state Civil Servants, Alhaji Mohammed Abioye spoke this Thursday in Ilorin, the state capital during an interaction with Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed.

Alhaji Abioye said that “it needs be mentioned that we have come together in order to join hands with other well-meaning Kwarans who have been working to put a stop to the downward socio-economic development of the state due to poor governance in all ramifications especially since 2003 till date.

“We are concerned because this ugly trend has come about because the civil service which is supposed to be the engine room of government has been largely bastardised. The reason for this ugly trend is traceable obviously to poor service condition, lack of respect and regards for the service and its personnel both serving and retired.”

He said: “We must not allow this ugly trend to continue. We need to work with other progressively minded Kwarans to terminate the current political dynasty that is the major promoter of the various governments whose output has made our state the headquarters of poverty in Nigeria.

“In this respect, we urge all retired and service civil servants in the state to ensure safe custody of their permanent voter’s cards (PVCs), disregard the fake memorandum of understanding (MoU) recently signed between the state government and some labour leaders and come out en-mass February 16th and March 2nd 2019 to vote for APC
    candidates.”

He urged APC governorship candidate to be prepared to right all the wrongs already identified if voted in to power.

In a remark, information and culture minister urged the people to come out and vote massively come February 16th.

Alhaji Mohammed said the attention of the entire Nigeria and international community is focused on Kwara state in the forthcoming elections.

The minister added that “this Saturday election is very vital for the sacking of Bukola Saraki from the state’s politics. It is the most important so that before the dawn of Monday Bukola Saraki would have been sent packing from the state.”

  • Niger APC to members: You must win your Polling Units

The Niger state Chairman of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ), Engineer Jibril Imam has declared that there will be no political position for any member of the party that cannot deliver his/her polling unit.

He said it has been the policy of the party that political positions are given only to those who had secured victory for the party in their various polling units.

Imam who stated this in an interaction with newsmen on Thursday said the time of taking from what one did not give is over.

“This is not the time to stay in Minna and canvass for votes. Everybody must go back home, all stakeholders have been directed to go back and win their polling units as operation deliver your polling unit is still on course.

“No delivery of polling unit, no political position. That is the position of the party because you cannot take on what you did not give and as everyone is a product if a polling unit, we expect everyone to go back to their polling unit and struggle to make sure the party wins the elections.”

He urged the people to vote in favor of APC in order to ensure continuity in government adding that, “continuity is the key, it is the sweetest thing. If you bring in a new government, it will take another two years before the government can acclimatize and start work.

“Please consider APC for the next election because of our antecedent and what the government at both the Federal and state had done.”

Imam added that APC has the capacity to turn the state around and will do more when re-elected.

  • Ambode urges electorate to shun violence at polls

With just two days to the presidential and the National Assembly elections, Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has urged the residents to conduct themselves peacefully, especially at the polling centres and shun any act of violence or misconduct that can threaten the exercise.

In a statement yesterday in Ikeja, the state capital, by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, the governor said the nation was on the threshold of history as the outcome of the elections would be a defining moment in Nigeria’s political and economic landscape.

He said it was important for the residents, especially the electorate, to ensure that they do not sit on the fence but come out en masse to exercise their franchise in a peaceful and orderly manner.

Ambode said: “As we prepare for the presidential and National Assembly elections, I appeal to every Lagosian to ensure that the peace we have enjoyed in the last four years in the state is replicated across all the polling units/voting centres on Saturday.

“Your Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) is your voice and it is what you will need to cast your vote. I urge you to come out, be orderly, take your place in the queue and avoid any form of violence that can mar the process or put the lives of our peace-loving citizens at risk.”

Stressing that he would cast his vote for All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the presidential election and other candidates in the National Assembly elections, the governor said Lagos in the last four years has benefitted immensely from President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

  • Buhari’ll win with or without your votes, Ubah tells Ndigbo

The senatorial candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra South, Senator Andy Ubah, has stated President Muhammadu Buhari will win Saturday’s poll with a landslide with or without the votes of Ndigbo.

He said it was better the Igbos cast their votes for Buhari as voting against him would not stop his victory at the poll.

Addressing party faithful on Wednesday at a rally in Nnewi, Ubah said the people of the zone should resist the mistakes of 2015 when APC was not voted for in the South East.

He said Ndigbo should have nobody to blame if they were not seen to have massively voted for Buhari and every other candidate of the party in the zone.

According to him: “It is obvious that President Muhammadu Buhari will be re-elected on Saturday. Whether you vote for him or not, he will win.

“It is unfortunate that during the last election in 2015, only 10 million votes were recorded for Buhari in the South East.

“But this time around, I want Anambra South alone to give him not less than 1 million votes.”

Candidate representing Nnewi North/South and Ekwusigo Federal Constituencies, Engr. Jude Onyeka said voting all APC candidates would guarrantee a team that would bring democracy dividends to the zone.

On his part, National Auditor of the party, Chief George Muoghalu asked party supporters not to be confused with money or any other gratification.

Other chieftains at the rally were the party’s deputy governorship candidate in 2017 in Anambra, Dozie Ikedife jnr, Nnewi North chairman, Tony Atuenyi as the host, Engr Forth Dike, J.C.Okeke, Omo Okeke, among others.

  • Okorocha to Ndigbo: vote Buhari or forget 2023

Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha has told the Igbo to vote President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday or lose the chances of clinching the Presidency in 2023.

He insists anything short of reelecting Buhari will mean that Ndigbo will have to wait until 2031 to take a shot at the Presidency.

He argued further that the Igbo will exercise the right of asking for the Presidency in 2023 by voting for the President.

The governor, who spoke while addressing crowd at zonal rallies in Okigwe zand Owerri zones respectively, to mobilise votes for the President, regretted “some Igbo politicians are campaigning to deceive the Igbo again as they did in 2015”.

He added such external forces are positioning men like Senator Hope Uzodinma against the Igbo interest.

According to him: “Some people especially our brothers are campaigning now against President Buhari saying he is Boko Haram that he is a herdsman and so on.

“You can remember in 2015, I was telling the Igbos to cast their vote for Buhari because he will win with or without the votes of the Igbo.

“I was called all sorts of derogatory names. Some said I was going to Islamise the whole Igbo. Is Igboland Islamised today?

“Igbo today are playing politics with the mindset of a trader, thinking only of the immediate benefits unlike other tribes that are playing real politics.

“My people listen to me and listen real good, whatever I tell you to do, do it as it will profit us. I am telling you today that Buhari will win.

“On Saturday, if Igbo supports Buhari and Buhari wins, in 2023 Ndigbo will have the right to demand for Igbo Presidency.

“Those who love Igbo nation must vote for President Buhari because if we miss this chance we may not get the presidency even by 2023 or 2027 or 2031.

“The time is right for the Igbo nation to play the right politics so as to have a clear chance by 2023”.

  • INEC working for PDP, says Oshiomhole

… Appeal to Nigerians to Vote Buhari

National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Comrade Adams Oshiomhole said on Wednesday that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was working for the main opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2019 general election.

Oshiomhole however, added that the governing party will not decent to the level of bringing down state institutions because the APC believes that state institutions should be allowed to perform their functions.

Responding to questions about alleged collusion between the Electoral Management Body and President Muhammadu Buhari, Oshiomhole alleged that at the moment, two Resident Electoral Commissioners in the South-South have been going about campaigning with the PDP.

Oshiomhole who asked Nigerians not to return the PDP to power said the pledge by the PDP candidate to float the naira was a receipt to economic woes, adding that Atiku has always been part of wrath facing the nation.

He also dismissed PDP allegations that the APC was responsible for burning some INEC offices that have recently been engulfed in flame, stressing that he could easily allude to the fact that the PDP burnt the INEC offices because they are afraid of losing elections in those places.

He said “If anything, this INEC has been very unfair to the APC. But we just discovered that we have a responsibility. The fact that we are a governing party imposes on us a certain level of code that you can’t be seen to rubbish every institution because if we rubbish everything, it would mean that we don’t want election. INEC believe everything the PDP says.

“As we speak, there are two Resident Electoral Commissioners who are virtually campaigning line by line with the PDP in the south South. INEC, without giving us any explanation and without any concrete evidence went ahead to say we can’t field candidates in Zamfara, thereby seeking to award, without any context and nullify democracy in Zamfara state.

“Is that the way your friends behave if they are your friends. INEC is working more for the PDP, based on evidence I can show. How can they explain that a court of competent jurisdiction gave orders in Zamfara to say this candidate is eligible to contest election and another high court in Abuja also gave a verdict saying APC did not conclude its primaries but did not give order to INEC.

“There is no order issued by the Federal High Court in Abuja. The court of Appeal made a pronouncement on this matter today that there was no order from the court in Abuja, but that there was a concrate order from a Zamfara High Court which upheld the primaries that was conducted in Zamfara.

“The INEC Chairman has said that when there are two court orders, they will adopt the last judgement. In Zamfara state, the Abuja judgement came first and the Zamfara judgment came last even though it is the same say.

“More as INEC has said they will always obey the last judgement when it came to the Zamfara issue, they changed the goal post. As media, you have to be careful. When you say people alleged there were meetings and can’t even cite any, it is a disservice. We have been at the receiving end of abuse.

“There is a candidate in Kano whose nomination we forwarded to INEC, but they changed the nomination and as we speak, we are in court over that. We showed our evidence.

“Do you remember the confession of the former Deputy Senate President who, on national television and on social media where anything is possible, narrated how President Obasanjo used him and Atiku to rig election, how they wrote results, how they collude with INEC. This same Atiku was in office when Mantu was doing those things.

“So, if PDP functionaries have enumerated how they use to rig election, how can in all fairness point to President Muhammadu Buhari who has been victim of election rigging three times such that in our legal history it is part precedent that the Supreme Court was persuaded to accept that election where ballot papers had no serial number was OK and not a major infraction.”

On the allegation by the PDP that the party was responsible for the fire incidences in some INEC offices, Oshiomhole said “does it make sense for any responsible Nigerian, when there is fire incidence either in a private property or a public property, to jump into conclusion from the comfort of your room say that the ruling party must have done it.

“There is an Igbo proverb that when you see a mad man running naked and he pulled your clothes, you don’t join him in running naked. The PDP choose to run naked and make allegations over everything. They are free to do that. We are more busy and will not join issues.

“This election is for us and no election can be this easy for us. All we need is one man one vote and we will defeat the PDP. There will be no violence, no fighting. Just the votes which will be counted and we will win.”

He likened Atiku’s plans to grant amnesty to looters who refund part of their loot to a situation of not putting in place any punitive measure to deter others from towing the same part.

He said President Buhari was not a sit tight leader, but only exercising his constitutional right to seek a second term in office, saying the President has demonstrated his love for Nigeria with the love of infrastructures he has put in place across the country.

He told foreign observers that while their presence was appreciated, western leaders should not come and dictate to Nigeria how to carry out their activities, saying “we are not a colony of any western nation”.

Nigeria, he said is much more than all those seeking to be the President, appealing for a violence-free election which he said will be won by his party without having to resort to any form of rigging or intimidation.

  • Polls: Be peaceful, shun violence, Ambode tells Lagosians

With just two days to the presidential/national assembly elections which comes up on Saturday, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode has called on Lagosians to conduct themselves peacefully especially at the polling centers and shun any act of violence or misconduct that could threaten the exercise.

In a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, on Wednesgovernor, the governor said the nation was on the threshold of history as the outcome of the election would be a defining moment in Nigeria’s political and economic landscape.

He said it was important for residents, especially the electorate to see the election as one that they must not sit on the fence but come out to exercise their franchise albeit in a peaceful and orderly manner, devoid of rancour and all forms of electoral violence.

“As we prepare for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, I appeal to every Lagosian to ensure that the peace we have enjoyed in the last four years in the State is replicated across all the polling units/voting centres on Saturday.

“Your PVC is your voice and it is what you would need to cast your vote. I urge you to come out, be orderly, take your place in the queue and avoid any form of violence that can mar the process or put the lives of our peace loving citizens at risk,” he said.

While stressing that he would be casting his vote for All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the Presidential election and other candidates for the National Assembly elections, the Governor said Lagos in the last four years had benefitted immensely from the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

He listed some of the key capital projects which the State had initiated with the support of the Federal Government to include the release of Oshodi-Muritala Muhammed Airport (MMA) road for reconstruction; release of land space in Oshodi for the construction of the interchange and terminus; release of Oshodi- Abule Egba lane for BRT and the release of the Presidential Lodge, Marina for the Lagos History Centre project.

The Governor also mentioned the ongoing road infrastructure works in Apapa-Oshodi Expressway, Badagry-Seme and Ikorodu axis as other intervention projects that President Buhari expeditiously approved to be carried out in the State.

“The fact is that since 1999, Lagos has never benefitted from the Federal Government under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government, the way it has benefited in the last three and half years. Most of the interventions that we have carried out have made life more meaningful to the average resident of the State.

“Beyond reasonable doubt, President Buhari has shown his love for Lagos and under his administration, Lagos has thrived. It is important that we continue on this trajectory for another four years,” the Governor said.

  • INEC was never prepared for 2019 polls, Balarabe Musa says

Former Kaduna State Governor, Alhaji Balarabe Musa, on Saturday expressed disappointment over the postponement of the general elections, but declared that INEC was never prepared for the exercise in the first place.
INEC had announced the postponement, few hours to the kickoff of the Feb. 16 Presidential and National Assembly polls.
Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, while announcing the postponement in Abuja, attributed the step to “overwhelming logistics and operational challenges”.
The commission fixed Feb. 23 and March 9 as new dates for the  Presidential and National Assembly elections and ,   the Governorship and State Assembly polls respectively.
But Musa, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN),  in Kaduna on Saturday, said he was disappointed, but not surprised, at the development.
“I am not surprised because INEC was never ready for the exercise, given the level of its preparations.
“INEC had serious funding challenges; what was appropriated to the commission by the National Assembly was not adequate and everyone knew it.
“We are not even sure if the approved amount was released to the electoral body by the Federal Government.

“The logistics and operational challenges are glaring. There are also serious security challenges that may affect the agency in the course of the elections.
“The security services are facing the same funding crises and most of them are living  in fear.
“You can also see the serious challenges being faced by the  Judiciary, who are supposed to play a major role in the election process,” Musa said.
“So, I must say that I am disappointed, but, again, as I said, I am not surprised.
“I hope that  all the stakeholders will take the  necessary measures to help INEC address the issues before Feb, 23, the new date for the Presidential polls, because the President can only handover power to an elected person.”
Musa called on Nigerians to remain calm, while waiting for the new  dates for the polls.
