A federal high court in Abuja lately highlighted an aspect of Nigerian law that people most concerned would prefer abides in permanent abeyance. The court sacked Abubakar Gummi, representing Gummi/Bukkuyum federal constituency of Zamfara State in the House of Representatives, for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Cross-party defections by political actors is the in-thing currently in Nigerian pollical culture. But Justice Obiora Egwuatu, late last week, held that Gummi’s defection was unconstitutional since there was no division in the PDP at the time he left the party in 2024. The judge restrained House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas from further recognising the Zamfara lawmaker as a member of the green chamber. Among other things, he also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh election to fill the vacant seat within 30 days.

In a suit filed through their lawyer, Ibrahim Bawa, SAN, the PDP and its Zamfara chairman, Jamilu Jibomagayaki, had asked the court to determine whether Gummi’s defection from the PDP – that sponsored his election – to the APC was lawful, and whether the House speaker’s failure to declare his seat vacant violated Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended). The referenced section states: “(1) A member of the Senate or of the House of Representatives shall vacate his seat in the house of which he is a member if – (g) being a person whose election to the house was sponsored by a political party, he becomes a member of another political party before the expiration of the period for which that house was elected; provided that his membership of the latter political party is not as a result of a division in the political party of which he was previously a member or of a merger of two or more political parties or factions by one of which he was previously sponsored.”

Gummi, in his defence, argued that his defection was warranted by “lingering unresolved internal and external crises” within the PDP at both national and constituency levels. He said the situation made it impossible for him to effectively represent his constituents and ensure equitable distribution of democracy dividends.

Justice Egwuatu, however, dismissed Gummi’s defence and criticised the growing trend of political defections, describing it as a betrayal of the electorate’s mandate. “In a situation where the electorate have made their choices between different political parties and their candidates based on the manifestos and marketability of such a political party, it is legally and morally wrong for a politician to abandon the party under whose platform he or she was elected into office and move to a rival party without relinquishing the mandate of his or her former party. If a person must decamp, don’t decamp with the mandate of the electorate. Don’t transfer the votes garnered on the platform of one party to another party,” he ruled inter alia.

Southwest APC lauds Tinubu over creation of regional development commissions

The All Progressive Congress (APC) in the Southwes has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over creation of Development Commissions in all the nation’s six geopolitical zones of the country.

In a statement by its Zonal Publicity Secretary, Mr. Ayobami Afolabi, the party said the step would facilitate speedy growth and development to all the geographical components of the country.

Afolabi described the idea of geopolitical zone development commissions as a subtle way of acceding to the popular demand for true federalism as all the each zones are being given a veritable platform for partnership, collectivism and unity of purpose.

Reacting to the two-day South West Stakeholders’ Dialogue/Summit in Akure, Ondo state, organised by Development Agenda for the Western Nigeria (DAWN Commission) in collaboration with Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) and the governments of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti and Oyo states, Afolabi urged Governors and other leaders from the zone to march word with actions.

He said they must ensure that all the developmental ideas and road maps generated from the recent regional summit are carefully worked out and Implemented for the benefit of all the six states in the zone.

His words: “The quality of representation and deliberations at the recently concluded Akure summit was a pointer to the fact that the good people of the South West are ready again to reinvent the zeal, courage and bravery with which the affairs of the defunct Western Region was piloted by Chief Obafemi Awolowo and other legendary personalities who mobilized little resources to generate unique ideas and actions which placed the Region at the forefront of good governance and enviable leadership.

“The organisers of the Akure Summit also deserve applause as they were able to make the dialogue devoid of politics or sentiments as people from all divides were involved.

“At the end of the dialogue, the whole world was made to see that sons and daughters of Yorubaland were mindful of the shared values, opportunities and prospects which could turn their land into an eldorado in no time.

“However, the major challenge now is for the concerned individuals, groups and authorities to speed up action and ensure that the gains of the Summit are translated into unprecedented holistic development for the South West geo-politcal zone.”

    ‘Stop rejoicing over Nigeria’s challenges’

Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr Peter Obi, not to rejoice over Nigeria’s challenges.

The party in a statement yesterday in Ogba, Lagos by its spokesman, Seye Oladejo, said: ‘’Lagos APC has observed the latest grandstanding by Peter Obi following the U.S. designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern.” True to form, Obi once again attempted to turn a sensitive national issue into political theatre, rather than demonstrate statesmanship.

‘’Even more telling is that it uncharacteristically took him some time to respond. For a man always seeking microphones and hashtags, his sudden silence was deafening – until well-meaning Nigerians began to publicly question it. It has become clear that Obi did not speak out of patriotic instinct, but out of public pressure and fear of further exposing his double standards.

‘’When Obi finally spoke, the nation saw what we expected – too little, too late, and too predictable. His reaction lacked sincerity, urgency and any semblance of a unifying spirit.

‘’A man who claims to desire national leadership should not require public reminders to speak when his nation’s image is at stake. Leadership is proactive, not reactive and certainly not driven by online agitation.’’

‘’But Peter Obi appears content only when Nigeria is under pressure, believing every challenge for the nation is an opportunity for his political resurrection. That is not patriotism. It is sour politics born from electoral heartbreak.

‘’Nigeria’s security problems did not start yesterday – they were inherited. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is confronting them with courage and strategy: Strengthening military command and intelligence structures.

Deploying modern technology and platforms. Re-energising regional and global security collaboration. Tackling the economic roots of insecurity through bold reforms.’’

He said while serious leaders were working, Obi and his online choir were rehearsing 2023 grievances and clinging to foreign commentary for political oxygen.

The Director of Election Management at the APC National Secretariat Malam Tasiu Mohammed also joined other party leaders at the event, which marked a major milestone in the party’s preparation for the Anambra governorship poll.

The campaign flag-off took place later in the day at the All Saints Cathedral Field (DMGS), Onitsha, at 2 p.m., with the National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and the Senate President, His Excellency Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON, leading the ceremony.

  • APC to Obi: Nigeria’s interest must rise above politics

APC to Obi: Nigeria’s interest must rise above politics

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said Nigeria’s national interest must always rise above partisan politics.

The party was reacting to the 2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate, Mr Peter Obi’s comment on the U.S. designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” and threat of possible military action.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Obi had described the U.S. designation as “deeply concerning”, expressing worry over insecurity while also urging the government to protect citizens’ lives and freedoms.

The APC’s Publicity Secretary, Mr Seye Oladejo,in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos, said sensitive national issues should not be politicised.

He said that Obi’s statement on the matter reflected “selective outrage” and an attempt to exploit a sensitive national issue for political relevance rather than demonstrate statesmanship.

Oladejo, accused Obi of grandstanding and seeking political attention from Nigeria’s temporary challenges.

He said national unity and integrity must guide every public reaction to international reports about Nigeria.

Oladejo urged citizens and political leaders to defend the country’s image through responsible communication and patriotic engagement.

He said political differences should never override collective responsibility to protect Nigeria’s reputation.

According to him, leaders should project optimism and confidence when discussing the nation’s challenges.

“The interest of Nigeria must always rise above politics. We all have a duty to defend our nation’s dignity,” Oladejo said.

The APC spokesman noted that President Bola Tinubu’s administration was taking bold steps to restore security and strengthen governance.

He said reforms were ongoing to improve military coordination, intelligence sharing, and technological capacity in the fight against insecurity.

Oladejo said the Federal Government was also addressing economic challenges that contribute to insecurity through targeted reforms and job creation.

He urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive as the benefits of the Renewed Hope Agenda continue to unfold.

Oladejo emphasised that patriotism must be a shared value for both leaders and citizens.

He called for constructive dialogue and collaboration across political lines to sustain national progress.

According to him, development and stability can only thrive when the nation speaks with one voice.

Oladejo said the APC welcomed all genuine suggestions but cautioned against statements that may weaken public confidence in the country.

He reaffirmed that Nigeria would overcome its challenges through unity, resilience, and patriotic commitment.

NAN recalls that the United States had  recently re-designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” over alleged violations of religious freedom.

NAN also reports that the Federal Government had rejected the designation, describing it as inaccurate, and reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms of all Nigerians.

    • Shettima, Akpabio, Yilwatda, governors receive defectors to ruling party

Douye Diri made a triumphant entry into the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday, becoming the fourth governor this year to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into the ruling party.

Those who defected before him are: Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah.

The Bayelsa State governor along with his Executive Council members, state lawmakers and other leaders were received into the ruling party before a huge crowd at the Samson Siasia Stadium in Yenagoa.

Vice President Kashim Shettima led the high-profile reception party.

Diri said he tried his best to rescue the PDP but failed because the party had been taken over by those he described as “undertakers”.

He then stated the clincher: “We tried to salvage it (PDP), but to no avail. I never wanted my state to be buried with the PDP”.

Bayelsa, like Delta, Akwa Ibom, and Enugu were states governed by the PDP since 1999 before the governors defected with all the party structures.

Giving other reasons he moved to the ruling party, Diri said he was motivated by the need to align Bayelsa with a national leadership that values development.

He said he was influenced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s love for the growth of the state and the Ijaw nation.

He cited the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, the second phase of the Nembe-Brass road and a N4billion tax waiver granted the state for the procurement of a 60 megawatt gas turbine.

”I consulted with elders and the State Assembly and afterwards resigned from the PDP for obvious reasons. This defection is not only for Bayelsa. It is for Ijaws in Ondo, Edo, Delta and Rivers.

“I will not denigrate my former party. We were happy with it until some undertakers destroyed it.

“What was going on became incumbent on me to make a decision, and the majority of the state House of Assembly, including the Speaker, have come with me to the APC.”

Diri was chairman of the PDP committee that decided on the zoning of offices ahead of its now botched national convention.

He resigned from the party on October 15.

Two of the state’s current senators, Konbowei Benson and Benson Agadaga, as well as former Senator Ben Bruce and the Speaker, Abraham Ingobere, were also received into the APC at the ceremony.

But Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo and the immediate past governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, declined to join Diri into the APC.

The Deputy Governor has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking to prevent the House of Assembly from initiating impeachment proceedings against him.

APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yiltwada presented the APC flag, muffler and broom to Diri, saying: “Today you take over as the leader of our party in the state. Welcome, our leader in Bayelsa.

“With this flag, we want you to sweep out PDP and sweep all the votes to APC in 2027. We must have 100 per cent votes in Bayelsa.

“Take this as a symbol of strength and authority and make it stronger. We hang this flag for you as a symbol of ownership.

“You are fully decorated, and may God give you the strength to work till 2027 and deliver President Tinubu.”

Prof. Yilwatda thanked Bayelsans for taking the right decision, stressing that the Ijaw nation has spoken in one voice through the governor.

Welcoming Diri, Shettima described the move as a “homecoming” and a defining moment for national unity and political integration.

He said: “Today, you have shown us that Bayelsa has chosen the light of national integration over the shadows of political isolation.

“The APC is the party of those who believe that progress can only be guaranteed when we stand together, when we answer the call of the people.

“Your story mirrors that of your people. You have led with calm and dignity. But beneath that calm has flowed a restless commitment to development, to unity, and to peace.

“You have expanded roads to remote communities and assured them that they are not forgotten.

“You have built bridges where there were barriers. You have lit homes where there was darkness. This is what it means to govern with empathy.

“We welcome you into this fold to watch and support you as you champion what you have always done.”

Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, hailed the governor’s defection as an act of conviction and courage.

He added: “Your Excellency, Governor Diri, this gathering is a homecoming party for you.

“We are here not for a ceremony of convenience but for a celebration of your conviction. Yours is the story of a leader who has chosen the harder right over the easier wrong.”

Shettima said while President Tinubu has demonstrated repeatedly that politics is not war but the “art of building bridges across rivers of difference,” Diri has shown a profound understanding of that metaphor.

The Vice President described Diri as “a son of the creeks who has built literal and political bridges across the waters of the Niger Delta.”

According to him, Diri’s defection was “a political reunion with a progressive mind whose ideals have always aligned with the philosophy” of the governing party.

“We are not a house of strangers; we are a family bound by the shared belief that Nigeria can, and must, work for all her citizens.

“And we know you, Your Excellency. We know you as a builder — a builder of infrastructure, a builder of peace, a builder of trust, a builder of the Bayelsa dream,” he added.

Shettima assured the governor that he would not be judged by where he was coming from but by where he is going.

He noted that Diri’s arrival in the APC “is not the depletion of the opposition” but the “confirmation of the pulse and constitutional clarity of Africa’s largest democracy—the freedom of choice.”

Akpabio said the party was happy to receive Diri, as demonstrated by the large turnout.

He commended the governor for steering the state on the path of peace and congratulated him for taking the bold step of aligning with the party at the centre.

Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, said the Bayelsa governor has taken a progressive step by embracing the renewed hope agenda.

Also present were the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, Governors Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Ahmed Ododo (Kogi), and Monday Okpebolo (Edo).

‎‎Others were Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), Peter Mba (Enugu), former Edo governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, as well as Minister of Regional Development Abubakar Momoh,

Also there were Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil) Senator Heineken Lokpobiri; Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, and Director of Niger Delta River Basin Development Authority, Chief Ebitimi Amgbare, all from the states.

Tinubu, NDDC performance responsible for South South defection to APC – Emami

Ahead of Monday’s defection of Bayelsa Governor, Douye Diri to the ruling  All Progressives Congress (APC), a foundation member of the party, Chief Ayiri Emami, has identified the superlative performance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the South South as the main cause of political shift in the region.

He also attributed the people centered projects of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda as another factor responsible for the high profile politicians in the region embracing the governing APC.

Five States in the region which hitherto had been under the firm control of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) since 1999 have shifted base to the APC, leaving only Rivers State out.

Reacting to the development on Sunday while chatting with newsmen in Abuja, the Delta- born APC chieftain said the programmes and policies of President Tinubu in the last two and half years have endeared the people of the region to him and to the governing party.

He noted that some of the electioneering promises Tinubu made to the people of the region are fulfilled, giving hope for a brighter future for the region under his administration.

According to the Itsekiri Chief: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been fulfilling some of the promises he made to us. He promised that he would make Warri Port work. During President Buhari era, we made efforts to the Villa but you can see, in two years, he (Tinubu) has voted money for the Port now and even the Omadino- Escravos road that will pass through Gbaramatu.

“There are a lot of things going on, and our people see that he actually had our interests. So, I think those are the convictions with his policies that made the governors from the South South to say no, if we didn’t support him before, now the man is doing what is going to favour us, there is need to support him. I think his performance gave conviction to our leaders and people. So for me, I’m happy that they (governors) are coming.”

He also acknowledged the yeoman job the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is carrying out in the region under the present administration as another contributory factor to the increasing embrace and support the President and APC are enjoying.

“I think for the first time, NDDC has a proper vision and a structure, and because of the leadership of the NDDC, the chairman, and the MD, I think they are doing very well.

“This is the first time you can see a pocket of projects across the region, and they will go and commission meaningful projects like the Omadino-Escravos road. The initiative came through the NDDC – a joint venture with some oil companies – Chevron, NNPC, and now the state government. So we can have road from Warri to Escravos and you know what that means.

“What we used to know about NDDC before now, all our money used to end up in Abuja.   But today, I think the young man (Sam Ogbuku)is equally galvanising support for  Mr. President. That’s whatever he’s doing. He gives his support to the Renewed Hope Agenda of the present administration, and I think our youth are very happy with the administration.”

Dismissing a repeat of 2023 presidential election result from the region in 2027,  Emami expressed confidence of overwhelming victory for both the President and the ruling party in the region, “I don’t think that will happen in 2027 because we are all in one place. All the actors are in one boat as we speak,” he boasted

PDP members have hijacked our party, APC forum allege

Aggrieved stalwarts of the All Progressives Congress(APC) in Akwa Ibom have alleged that all the party’s structures across the state have been hijacked by newcomers to the party.

The stalwarts under the aegis of Akwa Ibom APC Aborigines Forum, who said this in an open letter to President Bola Tinubu on Sunday, blamed the Senate President Godswill Akpabio for not rising up against the development.

The forum’s national coordinator, Chief Okon Essien and state secretary,  Ekemini Udo in the letter accused Governor Umo Eno of deliberately sidelining founding members of ths party.

According to the forum, Eno has set up a 33-member ‘war council’  made up of politicians who moved with him from Democratic Party(PDP) to the APC to execute his political agenda agenda of 2027.

The letter reads in parts: “Your Excellency, we, the Akwa Ibom APC Aborigines Forum, rise in protest and deep concern over the ongoing political subversion and infiltration of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Akwa Ibom State.

“We are alarmed that the structures of our party — built with sweat, courage, and sacrifice — are now being methodically hijacked by Governor Umo Eno through a political “War Council,” while the Senate President, Senator Godswill Obot Akpabio, under whose leadership we stood loyally, watches in disturbing silence.

“It is no longer hidden that Governor Umo Eno has established a parallel political structure within the APC — a full-blown War Council conceived to conquer and take over the party’s machinery from within.

“Operating like a shadow government inside our great party, this council is the Governor’s instrument for manipulation, infiltration, and eventual domination of the APC in Akwa Ibom State.

” He has carefully handpicked and mandated thirty-three (33) individuals — mostly die-hard PDP loyalists — to execute this conquest.

“Their first assignment is to compile lists of persons who will occupy all party positions at the ward, chapter and state levels, thereby sidelining and extinguishing the aboriginal members who founded and nurtured the APC in Akwa Ibom State.

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says Nigerian women have been greatly empowered under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The APC Spokesman, Mr Seye Oladejo, in a statement on Saturday, said that the president’s actions reflected his long-standing belief in gender equity and capacity-based leadership.

Oladejo said the administration had elevated women’s participation, recognition, and inclusion in governance, business, and leadership across the country.

He said Tinubu had demonstrated a genuine commitment to fairness, competence, and inclusivity through appointments and empowerment initiatives targeting women at all levels.

“From the cabinet to the grassroots, Nigerian women today stand as equal stakeholders in shaping the nation’s development,” he said.

According to him, women now hold some of the most strategic positions in government, contributing to national growth with integrity and excellence.

Oladejo said the Renewed Hope Agenda had also increased  women’s access to finance, business development, and skills training through programmes such as CreditCorp and SME loans.

He said President Tinubu’s policies had transformed many women from dependants to wealth creators and job providers, nationwide.

He described Lagos as the model of women empowerment, recalling Tinubu’s legacy of appointing women as deputy governors, chief judges, and commissioners.

Oladejo APC  had institutionalised women’s participation in governance.

He called on Nigerian women to support the Tinubu administration as it had  given them “not just a voice, but power and prominence.”
