Kaduna South Senator Katung dumps PDP, joins APC

Senator Sunday Marshall Katung has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), pledging to offer better representation and deepen development in Kaduna South Senatorial District.

Announcing his defection in a statement titled: “A new chapter: A Message of unity and purpose,” Katung said the decision followed weeks of wide consultations with constituents, political stakeholders, family members, and associates across the zone.

He described the move as “difficult but necessary,” explaining that it was driven by a genuine desire to serve his people more effectively and ensure that their voices are heard at the highest decision-making levels of government.

The lawmaker said the decision was also in response to the calls by various segments of his constituency urging him to join forces with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Uba Sani, who, he noted, have shown special interest in the development of Southern Kaduna.

Katung commended both leaders for their inclusive governance style and developmental footprints across the senatorial district, saying they reflect a sincere commitment to equity, unity, and progress. He added that he and his colleague, Hon. Daniel Amos, along with other political associates, share a firm conviction to align with this vision.

While admitting that the decision might not sit well with everyone, the senator appealed for understanding, stressing that political alignments may shift, but the collective commitment to the welfare of the people must remain unbroken.

He urged friends, supporters, and political allies not to allow political differences to damage personal relationships built over the years, quoting former U.S. President Thomas Jefferson that “a difference of opinion in politics should never be a reason to withdraw from a friend.”

Katung reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining open communication with his constituents and working closely with the APC-led government to deliver purposeful governance and tangible development to Kaduna South.

    • Nabena kicks over governor’s entry into ruling party

Vice President Kashim Shettima and governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are due in Yenagoa on Monday to formally receive Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri into the ruling party.

Diri had resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on October 15 ahead of his defection.

Functionaries of the APC are said to be working round the clock to ensure a successful event.

But some APC members in the state are displeased with the circumstances surrounding the governor’s defection.

One of them is Yekini Nabena,a former deputy national publicity secretary of the APC who, yesterday, sought to downplay the coming of the governor.

Nabena alleged moves to ‘destroy’ the existing leadership of the APC ahead of the governor’s defection.

He told reporters in Abuja that while he was not opposed to Diri joining the APC, it would be wrong of him (Gov) to “destroy some people and the existing leadership of the APC in Bayelsa state because he wants to take full control of the party.”

He said: “We have traced the recent happenings in Bayelsa state to Governor Douye Diri’s camp, especially the arrest rumours of NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku (PhD).

“The plan is to destroy the existing organs and prominent members of the party before he (Governor Diri) formally decamps APC on Monday.

“But up till now, we have not found an answer to the question of what Governor Douye Diri is bringing to the APC. This is a Governor that his Deputy is not defecting with him. Hence, he is plotting to impeach the deputy governor.

“This is a governor that even some State House of Assembly members have rejected. About 90 percent of the serving National Assembly members, including Senator Dickson and other high profile lawmakers are not on the same page with him.

“This is a governor who is not in control of his local constituency, not to talk of his entire Senatorial District. We ask Governor Douye Diri again to tell Nigerians who is running after him or what he is running after?”

Diri is the fourth PDP governor to defect to the APC in the last few months, following in the footsteps of Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), Peter Mbah (Enugu).

Taraba State Governor Agbu Kefas is also on the verge of joining the APC.

Kefas, at a meeting with APC youth stakeholders in Abuja on Wednesday confirmed that he was on his way to the APC.

Rikwense Muri, the Taraba State APC Youth Vanguard’s publicity secretary quoted the governor as saying at the meeting that Taraba could no longer afford to remain isolated from the mainstream of national politics.

He said his decision to realign politically was driven by the higher goal of ensuring greater development, improved security, and increased federal presence in the state.

He added: “I am guided by the need to put Taraba first. Our state must take its rightful place in national development, and that can only happen when we work hand in hand with the centre.”

Court sacks Zamfara Rep for defecting from PDP to APC

The Federal High Court in Abuja has sacked Rep Abubakar Gummi, for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to All Progressives Congress (APC).

Gummi, represents Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara in the House of Representatives,

Justice Obiora Egwuatu, in a judgment, restrained House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, from recognising Gummi as member representing Gummi/ Bukkuyum Federal Constituency.

Justice Egwuatu also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission. (INEC) to conduct a fresh election to fill the vacancy for the constituency within 30 days from the day of the judgment.

The suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1803/2024, was filed by the PDP and its state’s Chairman, Jamilu Jibomagayaki, as 1st and 2nd plaintiffs.

The duo, in the originating summons dated Nov. 28 but filed Nov. 29, 2024, by Ibrahim Bawa, SAN, had sued Hon Abubakar Suleiman Gummi; Speaker of the House of Representatives and INEC as 1st to 3rd defendants respectively.

The plaintiffs had set out four questions for determination and sought nine reliefs for determination.

They asked whether, having regard to the provision of Section 68 (1) (9) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), it was not unconstitutional for Gummi to retain his seat as member in the House.

They said he defected from PDP which sponsored him for the election to Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency to APC, when there was no division in the party, among other questions.

One of the reliefs sought was a declaration that it was unconstitutional for the Speaker to refuse/fail to declare Gummi’s seat vacant.

Gummi, in his response through his lawyer, filed a notice of preliminary objection and a counter affidavit.

The lawmaker, in his argument, argued that his decampment was due to the crisis within the PDP.

He said contrary to the deposition of the plaintiffs, the lingering unresolved internal and external crisis both at the national level and in his constituency is the reason for his defection from the party to APC.

Gummi said the crisis degenerated into a situation where he could no longer represent his constituents properly and ensure that they all benefit from shared distribution of the dividends of democracy within the bounds of law, and without undue interference from anyone or anything.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Egwuatu granted all the plaintiffs’ reliefs.

The judge condemned the attitude of some politicians who see defection as a normal culture.

“Before I take my fingers off the keyboard, let me just add that politicians should respect the wishes of the electorates that elected them into office.

“A situation where the electorates have made their choices between different political parties and their candidates based on the manifestos and marketability of such a political party, it is legally and morally wrong for such a politician to abandon the party under which platform he or she was elected into office and move to a rival party without relinquishing the mandate of his or her former party.

“If a person must decamp, don’t decamp with the mandate of the electorates.

“Don’t transfer the votes garnered on the platform of one party to another party.

“A politician has no such rights to transfer votes of a political party to another political party.

“The law must punish such moves by taking away the benefits bestowed upon the decampee politician by the electorates.

“And that is what Section 68 (1) (g) of the Constitution has done.

“Political prostitution must not be rewarded.

“In total, I resolve all the issues in favour of the plaintiffs and against the defendants,” Justice Egwuatu said.

The judge, therefore, ordered that Gummi, having defected from PDP to APC “before the expiration of the period the House was elected, automatically loses his seat as member of the House of Representatives.

He made an order restraining Gummi from further receiving monies as salaries, allowances or howsoever called in his capacity as member representing the constituency.

He also made an order directing the lawmaker to refund to the Federal Government all monies collected as salaries, allowances or howsoever called as member representing the constituency from Oct. 30, 2024 to the date of judgment.

“An order is made directing that the evidence of the refund of all monies collected as salaries, allowances or howsoever called be filed in the registry of this court within 30 days of the judgment of this court,” he said.

Justice Egwuatu consequently awarded a fine of N500, 000 in favour of the plaintiffs and against the defendants.

    APC cautions against bitterness-driven politics

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State says Nigeria deserves better than infantile and bitterness-driven politics of some opposition leaders in the country.

The APC Spokesman, Mr Seye Oladejo, said this in a statement on Thursday, while reacting to opposition leaders’ criticisms of President Bola Tinubu.

The New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar had criticised Tinubu’s withdrawal of presidential pardon granted to some ex-convicts following complaints in some quarters.

Oladejo said: “Nigeria deserves better than desperation politics.

“The Nigerian public is wary of this infantile, bitterness-driven politics – where sound governance decisions are attacked for the sake of noise-making.

“President Tinubu is strengthening institutions, not pandering to emotion or social media theatrics.

“While responsible leaders build, petty politicians rant.”

He said Abubakar’s statement reeked of political bitterness ,noting Tinubu acted with sincerity with the decision to pardon the ex-convicts.

Oladejo said leadership was not about noise making, but responsibility, adding  Tinubu’s leadership was guided by law and not emotions.

“Unlike the impulsive and uninformed commentary that has become the trademark of the opposition, President Tinubu’s decisions are driven by due process, rule of law, and national interest.

“In advanced democracies, informed review and reconsideration are marks of credible leadership and institutional maturity – not weakness.

“Only in the shallow corners of the opposition’s imagination does consultation and constitutional refinement translate to a “U-turn,” he said.

According to him, President Tinubu will continue to lead with constitutional discipline, courage, and clarity of purpose.

He said the President would not condescend to the level of political bitterness and confusion that “have become hallmarks of those rejected repeatedly at the polls.”

“Nigeria is moving forward – and no amount of political tantrums will change that reality,” he added.

  • Disruption of APC campaign in Orumba raises concern

Disruption of APC campaign in Orumba raises concern

Members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Umunze, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, have expressed concern over the destruction of their campaign canopies and posters by suspected hoodlums believed to be supporters of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

While the Orumba South Local Government Chairman, Shedrack Azubuike, denied that the incident was politically motivated, APC leaders in the area described it as a sign of desperation by the ruling party.

It was gathered that although the destruction of APC posters and banners had been ongoing for some time, the tearing down of campaign canopies occurred on Wednesday morning. Orumba North and Orumba South are known strongholds of the APC in the state.

Sources told The Nation that the action, allegedly carried out by APGA youths at Ugwuaro Primary School field, was done on the orders of the local government chairman. The APC governorship candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu, and his running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife, were scheduled to make a campaign stop in the area as part of their mobilisation tour for the November 8 governorship election.

In his response, however, the council chairman said the setting up of canopies and chairs at the school field contravened an earlier directive issued by the council.

According to Azubuike, the directive—issued in August 2025—prohibited political parties, religious bodies, and social organisations from holding events within public or private school premises during official school hours.

He explained: “The noise from rallies or crusades disrupts learning activities. The APC did not obtain written clearance from my office to hold their rally there.”

Azubuike made available a circular dated August 14, referenced OSLG/ADM, and titled “Restriction on Political, Religious, and Social Gatherings in Schools During School Hours.”

The circular, signed by him and copied to all school heads in the area, stated that: “Any individual, group, or organisation wishing to hold a programme or event within school premises must obtain prior written clearance from the Office of the Mayor, Orumba South Local Government Council.”

It further directed school authorities to ensure strict compliance or face administrative and legal sanctions.

Azubuike added, “They have no clearance permit and can hold their rally anywhere else in Orumba South, but not within a school. I am not against them.”

However, the APC campaign coordinator in Orumba South, Dr Chuka Onyema, dismissed the chairman’s explanation, insisting that the action was politically motivated.

He said, “This is pure politics. What is happening here today is politically motivated because we have seen similar cases elsewhere. In my town, Isulo, the ADC held a rally on Tuesday at a school field, and nobody stopped them. It was peaceful. Why then was the APC prevented?

“We also have information that other political parties have held rallies in different parts of Orumba South without any obstruction. Why target the APC?

“Our posters and banners in Isulo, Umunze, and Ihite have been torn down and burnt. Is it the APC members who burnt their own campaign materials?”

Accord Party collapses structure for APC

Ahead of the November 8 governorship election in Anambra State, the Accord Party has collapsed its political structure into that of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in support of the party’s governorship candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu.

The Accord Party described Ukachukwu as “a proven benefactor, interventionist, performer, and selfless leader who has consistently used his hard-earned resources to serve society.”

A delegation of the party, led by its Deputy National Chairman, Dike Igboekwe, pledged to work in synergy with the APC to ensure victory for Ukachukwu and his running mate, Senator Uche Ekwunife, in the forthcoming election.

The delegation, which included Accord Party leaders from all 21 local government areas of the state, met with Ukachukwu at his Osumenyi community in Nnewi South Local Government Area.

Igboekwe said the visit was to formally endorse the APC candidate and assure him of the party’s full grassroots mobilisation efforts.

In his response, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu expressed appreciation for the endorsement and promised to work closely with Accord Party members during the campaigns and after his victory.

He assured them that they would not regret their decision to join forces with the APC.

“You have made the right choice. I assure you that your support will not be in vain. Together, we will build a better and more prosperous Anambra State,” Ukachukwu said.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the appointment of Mazi Dr. Ezenwa Onyirimba as leader of the Renewed Hope Agenda in Enugu State, with a strategic focus on the 2027 general elections.

According to Dr. Onyirimba, the appointment was ratified through the office of the party’s National Youth Leader, Hon. Dr. Dayo Israel.

The new assignment mandates Onyirimba to mobilise grassroots support for the APC and advance the national development agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Before his latest appointment, Onyirimba served as Director-General of the APC Youth and Student Council and was a key member of the Stakeholders Relations Directorate under Mallam Nuhu Ribadu in the Presidential Campaign Council.

In his new capacity, Onyirimba is expected to drive the Renewed Hope Agenda deep into the grassroots of Enugu State and consolidate the party’s presence across local communities.

The party expressed confidence that his experience in political organisation and stakeholder engagement would help galvanise support for President Tinubu’s re-election bid both in Enugu State and across the country.

Fresh defections deepen political tension as PDP lawmakers join APC in Zamfara

    • …as Governor reportedly plans to meet Tinubu in Abuja

Tension has reportedly heightened in Zamfara State following a new wave of defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), raising concerns within Governor Dauda Lawal’s political camp ahead of the 2027 general elections.

It was learnt that Governor Dauda Lawal is expected to visit President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House on Wednesday to discuss ongoing political developments in the state.

On Tuesday, Hon. Maharazu Salisu, representing Maradun II Constituency in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, formally announced his defection from the PDP to the APC at the party’s state secretariat in Gusau.

His move, along with that of several ward leaders, reflects the increasing realignments among political actors in the state as different parties prepare for upcoming elections.

The APC currently holds a majority in the Zamfara State House of Assembly, while some PDP lawmakers are said to be reviewing their political options.

Governor Lawal has continued to engage stakeholders and political leaders across the state in efforts to strengthen democratic participation and promote unity among political groups.

Meanwhile, the Northern APC Stakeholders Forum has rejected any attempt to allow Lawal to defect to the APC.

In a statement signed by its national coordinator, Alhaji Mubarak Liman, the forum said, “Any attempt to welcome him into the APC will spell doom for the party in Zamfara and the North-West at large.”

The forum further noted that the steady stream of defections by lawmakers and grassroots leaders was proof of the governor’s growing unpopularity.

Observers believe the governor’s scheduled visit to President Tinubu may focus on consultations regarding political stability and ongoing development projects in the state.

Osun 2026: APC begins membership revalidation

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State has begun revalidation to register members ahead of 2026 governorship election.

The Chairman, Tajudeen Lawal, who hosted the 12-member revalidation team and state co-ordinators led by Mr John Malumi, the deputy director, Elections Management (Organising Department), enjoined the party chairmen in the local governments and area office in Modakeke to assist the team during the exercise.

He said it was imperative for the party’s stakeholders to join hands with the visiting team for a desired result.

Lawal, represented by the state Secretary of the party, Alhaji Alao Kamoru, told the visiting membership validation team that the party had put everything in place for them, in order to make the programme a success.

Malumi told the APC state Working Committee and the chairmen of the party in the local governments that the exercise was not about registration of new members into the party, but rather to work on the existing members.

Seeking the cooperation of the party chairmen in the local government, he said members of the party must be financial members and that they all had the right to vote and be voted for.

Members of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State yesterday held a solidarity march to back the governorship aspiration of the Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Asiwaju Munirudeen Oyebamiji (AMBO) and re-election bid of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The supporters converged on Osogbo City Stadium and marched through Ayetoro, Igbona, Olounkoro, Old-Garage, Orisunbare, Ola-Iya, Fakunle, to Ogo-Oluwa, which covered five kilometres before they stopped at Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Office.

They described the NIWA boss as the best aspirant, who had the capacity to deliver victory for the party if given the governorship ticket for the 2026 election.

Former Speaker of House of Assembly Timothy Owoeye said the walk was not just a show of strength for Oyebamiji, but also a reaffirmation that APC remained the party to beat in Osun.

He hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and performance, saying his achievements had rekindled faith in the party across the country.

“This Unity Walk is to tell Osun people that APC is united and ready for 2026. Asiwaju Oyebamiji stands out as a competent, tested and trusted aspirant with a track record of performance as a two-time commissioner and as managing director of Osun Investment Company Limited,” Owoeye said.

Addressing reporters, a former commissioner under the administration of ex-Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, Adebayo Adeleke, said the large turnout of APC members to support Oyebamiji was a testament that he was loved by all ahead of December 13 primary.

There is no aspirant in APC that is not competent. They are all competent. But what we are saying is Bola Oyebamiji is above all when it comes to APC.
