APC gains momentum in Kano as Doguwa welcomes commissioner, ex-NNPP leaders

House of Representative member Alhassan Ado Doguwa yesterday  received hundreds of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) members to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.

The move is a significant boost for the APC and a show of support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration.

“It is also a clear indication that the reelection chances of the governor and president are bright, as 2027 general polls draw near,” Doguwa, a former House Leader and now Chairman House Committee on Downstream Petroleum, said.

Doguwa, who represents Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency, led an inclusive APC registration exercise and welcomed prominent NNPP defectors, including the Kano State Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa, and other government officials.

The lawmaker alongside the defecting NNPP members also conducted their APC membership E-registration, and held a rally during which he launched the President Tinubu/Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf second term campaign.

“We all pledged to work for the overall interest of the APC under His Excellency President Bola Tinubu at the centre, and the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf at the sub-national level, as clearly reflected in our party’s constitution and in compliance with the tenets of constitutional democracy.

“We have all embraced this development in good faith and believe that same can be seen as a WIN-WIN situation for all party members. We are now co-drivers of the governor’s political project called “KANO FIRST”.

“I led an all inclusive approach of the APC membership E-registration exercise in Doguwa Local Government Area of Kano state, where I received among others, prominent members of the defunct NNPP into the ruling APC.

“The Honourable Commissioner of Water Resources Kano State and former APC state Chairman Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa, Engr. Ado Ibrahim Doguwa and the Chairman Doguwa Local Government, Abdul Rashid Doguwa, and his entire executive, legislative teams and a host of others decamped from the NNPP who are mostly government officials under the leadership of Governor Yusuf,” Ado Doguwa said.

Their defection comes after Governor Yusuf officially joined the ruling party.

Yusuf defected after his meeting with President Bola Tinubu, which was believed to have resolved issues surrounding his defection, including governorship ticket which the former APC national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje reaffirmed, urging all aspirants to step aside for the governor.

The APC has welcomed Yusuf’s move, while NNPP’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has expressed concerns about the defection, calling it a betrayal

  • APC presidential running mate speculations

    APC presidential running mate speculations

There were no indications that the All Progressives Congress (APC) ever contemplated modifying the formula it adopted to win the 2023 presidential election. But in January, and out of the blue, speculations arose that the party might be amenable to a Muslim-Christian presidential ticket for the 2027 election. After about a week of reportorial indulgence, the party put the lie to the rumours. In addition, months earlier last year, a media feeding frenzy also occurred over whether Vice President Kashim Shettima might be dropped from the 2027 ticket. Again, it took the president affirming on Mr Shettima’s birthday how loyal and diligent and complementary the vice president had been to douse the speculations. On a distant tomorrow, other speculations might yet arise. It comes with the territory. It’s all politics.

What is evident so far is that in 2023 the APC proved and probably established for all time the following presidential elections formulae:  (a) for a southern Muslim candidate to stand any chance of winning the presidential election, he will need a northern Muslim running mate; (b) for a northern Muslim candidate to win, he will be sailing near the wind to take a southern Muslim running mate; (c) for a southern Christian candidate to win, he will need a northern Muslim running mate; and (d) for a northern Christian candidate to win, as tough as that might be, he needs a southern Muslim running mate. APC merely and sensibly adopted MKO Abiola’s tactful and serendipitous 1993 presidential election formula. It was idle speculation, indeed childish controversy, to suggest that the APC would discard a formula that has worked well over two dispensations.

Defection: Governors remain leaders of APC in states, Tinubu declares

President Bola Tinubu has declared that governors under the All Progressives Congress (APC) remained leaders of the party in their respective states.

Tinubu made the declaration on Saturday at the Official Reception of Gov. Agbu Kefas into the APC held in Jalingo.

Represented by Sen. Kashim Shettima, Vice President, Tinubu announced that Gov. Kefas has assumed the leadership of the party in Taraba by the virtue of his defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) into the APC.

He expressed his determination to support the governor and his cabinet to bring development to Taraba.

He noted that the governor was  making efforts to unite the state and harmonise the diversities in the state to attain unity.

The president urged the people of the state  to rally behind the governor and support him to succeed.

He expressed satisfaction with the defection of a governor in the North East geopolitical zone, calling on both Adamawa and Bauchi to join the party at the centre.

Earlier, Prof. Nentawe Yelwatda, National Chairman of the APC commended Kefas for being courageous by decamping to the ruling party.

Yelwatda said that Kefas did not make a mistake by leaving the sinking PDP to the APC.

He described the decision as a big achievement as it would enable the governor to get the economy of the state and the youth and women of the state to be productive.

According to him,  the state will now be a part and parcel of the winning party in 2027.

He assured all the members of the APC, both old and new of equal opportunities in the activities of the party, advising the governor to stand for everybody as one.

He further advised  the governor to unite the party and not descriminate.

In his remarks, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate congratulated the people of Taraba  and the governor, saying the defection would benefit the state more development and enhancement of infrastructure including the strengthening of security.

Represented by Sen. Barau Jibril, Deputy Senate President, Akpabio said that the decision of the governor to defect to APC would enable the state to enjoy equal opportunities in all spheres of governance at the national level.

‎Gov. Kefas said that the event was to shape the future of Taraba, encouraging all in attendance and everybody  not to dwell in the past but focus on the future.

He said the move was for the people of Taraba not for his personal interests.

“The move is to bring jobs for the jobless and business for entrepreneurs. To serve the state and be committed to the people and show results and fulfillment through discipline and patriotism,” he said.

‎The governor thanked APC for the opportunity and handing him the broom to sweep away division, poverty, tribalism and insecurity.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Kefas won under PDP in the 2023 governorship election.

He decamped to APC in 2025 and secured his membership registration card.

APC e-registration hits seven million, rescheduled congresses

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC),  has registered over 7 million members in its ongoing nationwide electronic membership registration exercise.

The party has also extended the exercise earlier scheduled to round off on Saturday, January 31, 2026, to February 8, 2026, to accommodate the high demand and enthusiastic response from potential and existing members.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Felix Morka, disclosed this to newsmen after the 183rd meeting of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) on Friday in Abuja

He said the extension of the registration exercise was a direct response to widespread clamor from party stakeholders.

According to Morka, “With respect to e-registration, there’s no complicated explanation. We just want more members to register,” adding that, “the extension was in response to the clamour by enthusiastic members who are hoping to register, to afford them more time.

“As of now, we have crossed the mark of 7 million… By the grace of God, by the time we are closing on the 8th of February, we should have crossed the mark of 12.5 million.”

Reaffirming that the primary aim of the e-registration was part of the party’s push to digitize its records, ensure data integrity, promote financial inclusion, and align with national legal standards.

He proudly noted that the party has become the first major political party in Nigeria to fully digitize its membership register, setting a precedent for internal democracy and modernization.

Basiru said, “The e-registration has been tremendously successful. We have received requests from many states that there are so many members that are still eager to register… Based on that request, particularly by the body of the Governors Forum at the meeting we held with them the day before yesterday, that was why the National Working Committee decided to extend.”

  • Six aspirants eye Edo South APC ticket

Six aspirants eye Edo South APC ticket

Senator Neda Imasuen is eyeing another term at the Senate to represent Edo South, but some APC leaders are bent on stopping him. Correspondent OSAGIE OTABOR reports

The race for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket to contest the Edo South senatorial seat has begun. Senator Neda Imasuen currently occupies the seat. Those interested have started setting up political structures across the seven local government areas that make up Edo South. They are doing all they can within their political means to secure the support of Governor Monday Okpebholo, the leader of Edo APC.

Interestingly, the race for the APC ticket is crowded with political warlords who are serial contestants. They are incumbent Senator Neda Imasuen, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, Valentine Asuen, Lucky Imasuen, Senator Matthew Urhoghide, and Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama. Aspirants in opposition political parties are yet to declare their interest.

Past senators who have represented Edo South are Daisy Danjuma, Roland Owie, Ehigie Uzamere, and Matthew Urhoghide. Senator Uzamere was the first Edo South senator to return for a second term after he defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

His successor, Matthew Urhoghide, also got a second term, but previous senators from Edo South lost their seats after serving four years.

It appears there is a gang-up against the return of Senator Imaseun to the Senate. Political observers believed that it would be a herculean task for Senator Imasuen to win the APC ticket. He won the election riding on the 2023 Labour Party (LP) tsunami with Peter Obi, the party’s presidential candidate.

He recently defected to the APC and has since become a rallying force for the party. Imasuen served as a Senior Legislative Aide to Senator Urhoghide from 2015 to 2023. Urhoghide’s attempt to secure a third term failed when he lost the PDP primary. Senator Imasuen joined the LP and won the election against all odds.

Some APC leaders backing Imasuen said he remained the best to pick the party’s ticket, having empowered over 10,000 women, youths, and artisans under various support schemes. They argued that he spent two years in the Senate as an opposition LP member and needed more time there for Edo South to rank among the top senators, rather than having a neophyte in 2027.

A chieftain of the Edo APC, who pleaded anonymity, cautioned Edo South electorates against promoting a politics of cultural consideration and instead to support a process that would produce effective legislators, public servants, and political actors with strong relationships with their different constituents and underdeveloped communities.

He said it was time to embrace positive trajectories and to promote people with character and capacity to meet their expectations.

The chieftain cautioned that the concentration of power in the hands of those who see political office as an industry to promote their self-interest would be a drawback to Edo South, blessed with natural and human resources.

According to him, “The Benins must play more interest in the political process that will produce those to be saddled with the responsibility of overseeing their interest.

“They must take a closer look at anyone who had the opportunity in the past but wasted it on the altar of selfish interest, nepotism, and outright plundering of resources. This nepotic practice of favouring family members, and cronyism by Benins, which makes them favour friends or long-term associates, even when such persons are not qualified, has hindered good governance, promoted corruption, and led to inefficient public service in Edo South.

“Edo South people must look inward and stop raising dust where there is none. Placing unqualified individuals in key positions will continue to hinder their progress.”

    Osagie Ize-Iyamu

Pastor Ize-Iyamu has been a relevant player in Edo South politics and the state at large over the past 24 years. Pastor Ize-Iyamu has reportedly met with his supporters and informed them about his ambition. His shot at the governorship slot in 2016 and 2020 failed.

His supporters have taken to social media to drum up support for him. He knows how to play the game and is very calculative. Ize-Iyamu is the greatest threat to Senator Imaseun, as his structure has remained intact. He served as Chief of Staff and Secretary to the State Government to Governor Lucky Igbinedion between 1999 and 2007.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu was the brain behind the formation of the Grace Group, under whose platform Adams Oshiomhole rode to power in 2008. He is believed to have the backing of Governor Monday Okpebholo.

    Valentine Asuen

Asuen was the APC State Youth Leader. He was also the APC candidate for Edo South in the 2023 general elections, but was defeated by Senator Imaseun. Asuen banks on the support of Oshiomhole and Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa. He is currently the Chairman of the Edo State Forestry Commission. He is currently suspended from the APC for his alleged ambition to run for the Senate.

    Matthew Urhoghide

Senator Urhoghide won election to the Senate twice under the PDP. He has reportedly informed Senator Imaseun of his ambition to return to the Senate. Urhoghide lost his bid for a third time to Matthew Iduoriyekemwen for a shot at the Senate.

Urhoghide is banking on Governor Okpebholo’s endorsement.

    Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama

Ogbeide-Ihama served in the House of Representatives between 2015 and 2023. He is an ally of the Minister of FCT, Abuja, Nyesom Wike. He is said to be campaigning on a political arrangement between Governor Okpebholo and the legacy PDP group.

    Lucky Imasuen

Lucky Imasuen was Deputy Governor of Edo State under Osarhiemen Osunbor. He was also Chief of Staff to Igbinedion. Imaseun lost at the APC primary to Asuen.

Oyo APC urges calm over technical hitches on e-registration

Oyo All Progressives Congress (APC) has appealed to members and supporters who have encountered few challenges in their efforts to participate in the ongoing electronic registration of members across the state.

The party assured that the technical hitches would be resolved in no time as they were being attended to by the relevant authorities.

Reports from across the 33 local government councils indicated that large population of party faithful, consisting of old and new members, were yet to have their personal data captured by officials in their domains largely due to technical issue.

The development has raised agitation for an extension of the registration deadline among the leaders and members of the Party.

But a statement by Oyo APC  Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, disclosed that the decision to make National Identification Number (NIN) and Permanent Voter Card (PVC) compulsory for members was to enable the party to have accurate and reliable membership record and personal data for the purpose of strategic planning and compliance with the global best practices.

He said: “We are not unawares of some glitches in the electronic registration exercise particularly as they concern the inability of many willing party faithful and supporters to have their personal data captured as well as lack of National Identification Number (NIN) by some individuals who are willing to register as APC members.

“The leadership of the APC is working round the clock to resolve some of these issues before the registration deadline this Saturday.

“We have also received requests for extension of the registration deadline from many quarters across the state and we have communicated this to the National Secretariat of our great Party while we are hoping to get a favorable response as soon as possible.

“Nonetheless, stakeholders are being charged to increase their efforts and ensure that nothing is left to chances. The E-regisration is a serious exercise and Oyo state chapter of the Party cannot afford to lag behind.

“As a matter of fact, old members and leaders who fail to register in the ongoing exercise would cease to be reckoned with in the scheme of things as we warm up for the congresses and party primaries in the build up to the next general elections.

“We are on top of the situation even as we encourage party faithful and supporters to reach out to the State Secretariat at Oke-Ado to report any challenges in their locality for prompt actions.”

    NEC-ratified timetable for congresses

In a schedule of its activities for 2025/2026 time-table released late last year by National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, the APC said it would end the e-Registration of its members tomorrow.

According to the timetable, the activities are being conducted pursuant to the provisions of Articles 11 and 17 of the APC Constitution to elect party officials across all levels.

Screening and appeals for state executives are slated for late February and early March, while state congresses will be held on March 7.

The time-table stated that appeals from state congresses will be entertained between March 9 and March 11, while the party will then move to the zonal level, with the purchase and submission of forms for zonal congresses and the national convention scheduled for March 12 to March 17.

According to the schedule, zonal congresses will be inaugurated on March 18, followed by the screening of aspirants on March 19 and 20.

It said the zonal congresses across the six geopolitical zones will take place on March 21.

Appeals arising from the zonal congresses would be heard on March 23.

The timetable shows that the APC National Convention is scheduled to be held from March 25 to March 28.
