    APC chieftain slams Governor Makinde

A chieftain of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Oyedele Alao, has slammed Governor Seyi Makinde’s recent criticism of Minister of Works David Umahi of ‘dancing around the cost’ on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

He described Makinde’s remarks as hypocrisy, alleging the governor must first account for his inflated road contracts before attacking anyone at the federal level.

A statement by Alao, an engineer, said the costs of roads by Makinde’s administration defied logic, accusing him of turning road construction into a cash-draining adventure that had produced some of the highest cost-per-kilometre projects.

He said: “These are not rumours; these are the governor’s own public figures. No civilised state should pay such outrageous sums without a clear Bill of Quantities or cost justification. Governor Makinde should publish the contracts.

“Oyo people deserve to know where their money is going. Until the governor opens his books, he has no moral ground to lecture the Federal Government on transparency or efficiency.

“As an engineer, I think the governor has an explanation to make on the roads and other infrastructural projects his administration has embarked on since 2019, most especially when the government has claimed it completed 14 road projects, totalling 224.32 kilometres between May 2023 and May 2025.

“Leadership is by example, not about grandstanding or media drama. Makinde should clean up his own administration before pointing accusing fingers at others. The people of Oyo State are watching, and history will not be kind to those who squander public trust.”

The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary,  Felix Morka, welcomed the Governor, other elected and appointive officers, leaders, and stakeholders to APC.

“The Governor’s decision to join the APC and align with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is a smart repositioning of Enugu state as a strategic partner, participant and beneficiary of the massive economic transformation currently underway in our nation, and will inure to the good and prosperity of the people of the state, and the entire South-Eastern Nigeria.”

Tbe party assured the Governor and teeming new members of its fullest support, accommodation, and seamless integration into the APC family.

  • APC secures two-thirds majority in Senate as Senator Kila dumps PDP

APC secures two-thirds majority in Senate as Senator Kila dumps PDP

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday achieved a two-thirds majority in the Senate following the defection of Senator Samaila Kila, who represents Bauchi North Senatorial District, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Kila’s defection letter during plenary, officially confirming the switch. The move reduces the PDP’s strength in the 10th Senate to 27 members while increasing the APC’s tally to 74, including Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada from Nasarawa, who has joined the APC but is yet to formally announce it on the Senate floor.

Kila’s defection comes just days after Senator Kelvin Chukwu of the Labour Party (LP), representing Enugu East, also joined the APC, pushing the ruling party past the critical two-thirds benchmark required to pass major policies and bills independently.

With its new numerical advantage, the APC now wields significant legislative power in line with Sections 143 and 188 of the 1999 Constitution, which outline similar thresholds for presidential and gubernatorial impeachments.

This development marks the first time since the APC assumed power in 2015 that it has secured a two-thirds majority in the upper chamber. Over the years, frequent defections between ruling and opposition parties have repeatedly altered the Senate’s composition.

Currently, the PDP holds 27 seats, LP has four, while the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and Social Democratic Party (SDP, including Wadada) have two seats each. The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) retains one.

In his letter, Senator Kila said his decision followed wide consultations with stakeholders and constituents in Bauchi North. He attributed his defection to deep-seated internal crises and the lack of strategic direction within the PDP, noting that he joined the APC to support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“It has become evident that the prolonged internal divisions, recurring factionalization, and crisis, loss of strategic direction within the Peoples Democratic Party, have gravely constrained my ability to discharge my constitutional responsibilities effectively and in good conscience.

“As one deeply committed to the service of our nation and the welfare of my people, I have found it necessary to realign my political engagements with a more progressive platform that embodies good governance, unity, progress, growth, and discipline in the governance of our country.

“Consequently, I have chosen to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) and to lend my full commitment to the implementation of the Renewed Hope Agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Metunibu, GCFR,” he said.

The senator commended President Tinubu for initiating bold and transformative economic reforms.

“I hold in high regard the bold and transformative reforms initiated by the President, aimed at restoring economic stability, strengthening governance, and repositioning our nation for sustainable growth.

“These efforts reflect the decisive leadership of our country, and that’s what Nigeria needs. I’m confident that these reform efforts align with my legislative ideals and my enduring conviction to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s development and democratic advancement.

He also expressed appreciation to the Senate President for his leadership since assuming office.

“Permit me, Your Excellency, the Senate President, to express my deep appreciation to you for your exemplary leadership of the 10th Senate that has attracted all and sundry from the opposition side.

“Your commitment to unity and legislative excellence continues to inspire confidence across party lines, and I remain committed to working under your guidance in advancing the Senate’s constitutional mandate and to ensuring the well-being of all Nigerian people.

“Please accept, Your Excellency, the assurances of my highest regards and unwavering commitment to the unity, peace, and progress of our party, the All Progressives Congress, and our nation in general.”

  • Enugu ingests APC

    Enugu ingests APC

Growing up in Enugu State in the 1970s, the commonest medicine for fever, cold, aches and pain was APC. Every mother had those over-the-counter, white looking tablets, handy in a small jar, at home. Our village dispenser, in charge of the community dispensary at Nwankwo, Ogwofia-Owa, one Romanus Ozobu (God rest his soul), would grind it, and with a little water, force it down our young throats to quench the fever and aches that followed the reckless plays and junkets.

That APC meant a combination of Aspirin, Phenacetin, and Caffeine, which is no longer in use. But the APC of my interest today, is the All Progressive Congress, a party formerly derided in the Southeast, as Janjaweed Ideology. Those who supported the party then, were reminded that the medical APC was no longer in use, and the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), taunted the party as an expired drug. To propagate APC as an alternative to PDP, in the state, was considered an insalubrious anathema.

A few ignored the abuses, and continued to support and propagate the party. Today, the governor of Enugu State, Barrister Peter Mbah, and majority members of the PDP at all levels in the state, have joyously ingested APC, and they are looking forward to the party returning them to power in 2027.

This column which has for the past ten years recommended APC as an alternative to PDP, joyously welcome them to the progressive party. They must inculcate the Igbo saying: “Obialu be onye abiagbu kwe n’eya”.

In my most recent piece on Governor Peter Mbah barely two months ago, which I christened: “Dilemma of Governor Mbah”, I had given ample reasons why Mbah should move over to APC. I quote extensively: “With the PDP doddering, Governor Peter Mbah who got elected by a controversial razor tin vote advantage in 2023 must be weighing his options, as the race to the 2027 general election dominates the political landscape. Mbah’s challenge is made worse by the fact that the politically conservative Enugu State voters, appears to have shown inflexibility with the recent result of the Enugu South Urban Constituency reordered election.”

I went further: “Apparently, to the shock of Mbah and his supporters, one Bright Ngene, who originally won the state legislative assembly election in 2023, again won the reordered election after postponements arising from repeated disruptions. To make it more embarrassing for the ruling party in the state, Ngene of the Labour Party, who was sentenced to seven-years imprisonment for a community related dispute, won the election from the prison. It remains to be seen whether he will serve what is remaining of his tenure from the prisons.”

I also stated: “From the whiplashing the PDP received in the 2023 general election in the state in the hands of the Labour Party (LP) and the recent mud on its face in the Enugu South Urban Constituency reordered election, the PDP on whose platform Mbah was elected is seriously in decline. The PDP which dominated the state like a colossus, making it nigh impossible for any other party to breath in the state must be wondering what happened to her glorious days in the sun.”

As the new leader of APC in the state, Governor Mbah’s biggest challenge would be how to harmonize the interest of the decampees from the PDP with those of the APC members, which they met on ground. Of course, the temptation would be to hijack most of the available positions, and yield little to the old members of APC. I hope the governor also realizes that he needs all the help he can get, to move those who voted for him in PDP over to the APC.

It will be poor appreciation of political idiosyncrasies for the governor and his team to think that moving from PDP to APC, automatically means the addition of the voters on both sides to become one. A lot of work needs to be done to convince the PDP voters that APC is not the demonized caricature that they painted it as, prior to this transition. One of the surest way to do this, is by ensuring a peaceful harmonization of contending interests, under the banner of new APC.

Those contending against the entrance of Governor Mbah into APC, led by the erstwhile state party chairman, Barrister Ugo Agballa, should not be discarded without giving them a hearing. Now that the tide has turned, may be they would be willing to make peace, if given a chance. While arguing that they be given a fair hearing, this writer urges them to appreciate the enormous advantage the governor brings to the party in the state. Without the combination of forces, there was no chance for APC to win over the state, all by its former self.

Luckily, Governor Mbah has shown himself worthy of a second term, within two years of his administration. So, he should be encouraged to deliver on the great promises he has set for the state. It would be a great disservice to the state to undermine the giant infrastructural developments he has been pursuing, and so, I urge those opposed to his emergence to give peace a chance. Running to the court would only compound the situation for those accused of anti-party activities, even as they may make the party weaker.

Again, the state APC needs peace within its rank to deliver a reasonable percentage of vote to the party at the presidential election in 2027. Such delivery would aid the receipt of greater federal interventions in the state. For instance, Governor Mbah’s promise of 1,000 megawatts of electricity through coal needs the support of the federal government to succeed. Since the right over coal, which is a mineral resource, falls within the exclusive legislative list, the governor needs the approval of the federal government to explore it.

As I wrote earlier this year, in January, in a piece I tiled: “Two Ideas Men”, Governor Mbah and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are men of ideas, and a synchronization of their God-given talents would benefit the state and the country at large. As I wrote back then: “So, when PBAT went to Enugu State, last Saturday, this writer was excited that a knowledgeable president was visiting a knowledgeable governor. Instead of a clash of ideas, there will be a synergy of ideas.”

While President Tinubu is pushing to deliver $1 trillion national economy, Governor Mbah is working to move the state economy to $30bn. As the PDP flag is lowered for the APC flag, in my beloved Enugu State, we wait to see what further impetus it would wrought to the pace of governance. Congratulations NdiEnugu. Let President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda join forces with Governor Mbah’s promise of tomorrow in Enugu State.

    Grassroots group rallies behind APC

The President, Sustenance of Faith in Governance, (SOFIG) Family, Kingsley Ezekwelu, has said they were supporting the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu because of his leadership qualities.

He described Ukachukwu as a leader with milk of kindness, who has all it takes to fix Anambra within six months.

The governorship elections in the state is billed to hold November 8.

Ezekwelu, spoke at Ifite-Ogwari, Ayamelum Local Government Area, when he led the SOFIG Family executives to the flag-off campaign of its 21 Local Government Area tours and mobilization of Polling unit Canvassers across the 326 electoral wards, yesterday.

He urged members of the Ikukuoma SOFIG Family to “make it a date with history” by voting massively for the joint ticket of Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu and Senator Uche Ekwunife.

Ezekwelu described them as a perfect team endowed with the experience, credibility, and vision to reposition Anambra for greatness, emphasising the need to elect a leadership that understood the people’s pains and have the willpower to deliver good governance.

Ayamelum Coordinator of the group, Pastor Emeka Okonkwo,

said the state deserves a people-oriented and transformational government that will restore hope and ensure development reaches every community.

He noted that the (APC) ticket of Prince Ukachukwu and Senator Ekwunife offers the most credible path to achieve that vision.

  • CSOs, APC disagree on opposition lawmakers’ defection

CSOs, APC disagree on opposition lawmakers’ defection

The Coalition of All Civil Society Organisations in Ondo State (CACSOD) and All Progressives Congress (APC) have clashed over the mass defection of opposition lawmakers in the House of Assembly to the ruling party.

This came after two lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oladiji Oguntudo – representing Akure South Constituency I, and Raymond Daodu, Deputy Minority Leader – representing Akoko South West Constituency I, officially announced their defection to the APC at the plenary of the House of Assembly.

Before their defection, Messrs Oguntudo and Daodu were the remaining PDP members in the state legislature, presided over by the Speaker, Olamide Oladiji, which is dominated by the APC.

The defection of the two lawmakers from the PDP now makes it a total of 26 APC legislators dominating the House of Assembly, with no opposition in the parliament.

While CACSOD described the development as a major threat to democracy and accountability, APC countered, saying the decision of the PDP lawmakers to defect to its fold was a testament to the ruling party’s commitment to delivering results and transforming lives.

In a statement issued over the weekend and signed by its Chairman, Alo Martins, the civil society group expressed worry that legislature without opposition was dangerous for governance and public accountability.

According to the group, “a democratic system without an effective opposition is a democracy in name only.

“Opposition lawmakers are essential for checks and balances, rigorous policy debates and oversight of the executive arm. When the legislature becomes a one-party chamber, it risks degenerating into a rubber stamp, unable to question policies, demand transparency, or defend citizens’ interests.”

The group described the mass defection as a “betrayal of the electorate’s trust,” noting that the lawmakers were elected based on specific party manifestos and platforms.

CACSOD said: “Voters who supported opposition candidates now find themselves represented by members of the ruling party without their consent. Such political opportunism undermines the integrity of elections and erodes citizens’ faith in the democratic process.”

The coalition called on the National Assembly and the ongoing Constitution Review Committee to strengthen the anti-defection law, particularly Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution, which allows defections on the grounds of internal party division.

It said the clause had been “grossly abused by politicians, who manufactured or exaggerated internal crises to justify crossing over to the ruling side.”

CACSOD added: “We further call for a constitutional amendment that makes it mandatory for any elected official, who wishes to defect from the party under which they were elected, to first resign from office and seek a fresh mandate under their new platform.”

The group warned that the absence of opposition in the assembly could erode accountability, stifle dissenting voices and embolden impunity in governance.

It urged citizens to be vigilant and reject politicians who engaged in “political carpet-crossing” for personal gain.

But in a swift reaction, the APC dismissed the criticism, describing the defections as a validation of the party’s progressive governance under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement signed by its Director, Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, the party explained that both leaders had demonstrated a commitment to the development of Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole.

APC said it rejected the notion that the political movement was a betrayal of democratic values, maintaining that in a competitive polity, elected representatives retained the right to choose the platform that best enabled them to serve their constituents.

APC national youth wing welcomes Zamfara PDP Assembly candidate

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Youth Wing has welcomed Hon. Muhammad Lawal Kuryar Madaro, the former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the Kaura Namoda South State House of Assembly, following his defection to the APC.

The group said the development signals a growing wave of support for the APC under the visionary leadership of Dr. Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence.

In a statement signed by Comrade Danjuma Nuhu, the APC National Youth Wing celebrated Kurya’s move as a bold embrace of progress.

Kurya’s defection follows his defeat in the August supplementary election, where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared APC’s Kamilu Sa’idu the rightful winner of the Kaura Namoda South constituency.

Returning Officer Lawal Sa’adu from the Federal University Gusau confirmed Sa’idu’s triumph, securing 1,181 votes against Kurya’s meager 194 in the runoff.

Across the constituency, APC amassed a commanding 8,182 votes, while PDP had 5,544 votes.

Comrade Danjuma Nuhu hailed Matawalle as a political colossus whose strategic brilliance and unrelenting dedication to Zamfara’s security and prosperity have redefined the state’s future.

“Dr. Bello Matawalle is a rare gem, a leader whose political dexterity and foresight have elevated him to a towering figure in Nigerian politics.

“As Minister of State for Defence, he has spearheaded relentless efforts to curb banditry, bringing renewed hope to Zamfara’s beleaguered communities.

“His ability to unite diverse groups and inspire defections like Kurya attests to his magnetic leadership and unyielding commitment to progress,” Nuhu declared.

Matawalle’s policies, he added, have laid a foundation for peace and development, positioning him as the architect of Zamfara’s renaissance.

The APC National Youth Wing extended an open invitation to other PDP members to join the APC’s progressive fold.

Kurya’s defection, seen as a harbinger of further realignments, signals a shifting tide in Zamfara’s polarized landscape.

  • Nwoye nullifies Enugu suspensions in Enugu APC, calls for unity

Nwoye nullifies Enugu suspensions in Enugu APC, calls for unity

The newly inaugurated Caretaker Committee Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, Dr. Ben Nwoye, has announced the nullification of all suspensions previously imposed on party members by the recently dissolved Ugochukwu Agballa-led executive committee.

The chairman also declared the suspensions “null, void, and of no effect.”

Nwoye, who returned to the helm of the party following the dissolution of the Agballa-led executive by the APC National Working Committee (NWC) last Thursday, made the announcement while addressing a large gathering of party leaders and supporters at the APC Secretariat in Enugu on Saturday, shortly after returning from Abuja.

Among those affected by the earlier suspensions were former Senate President, Ken Nnamani. former GovernorSullivan Chime; former Speaker and current Secretary of the Caretaker Committee, Barr. Eugene Odoh;  former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama; and former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, among others.

Describing the series of suspensions under the Agballa leadership as a “political caricature” that weakened the party’s cohesion, Nwoye said such actions were counterproductive and inimical to progress.

“How can you suspend the very people you need to win elections?” he queried.

He declared all forms of suspensions, whether issued through letters, audio messages, or radio announcements, as invalid, emphasizing that the party must now embark on genuine reconciliation and reintegration of all aggrieved members.

According to Nwoye, the national leadership of the APC had given him a clear mandate to return to Enugu and rebuild the party’s unity ahead of critical political contests in the state.

The caretaker chairman further observed that the political atmosphere in Enugu had significantly changed with the emergence of Governor Peter Mbah, describing his coming as a “new political dawn” for the APC in the state.

He warned that the party could no longer afford division or complacency in the evolving political landscape.

“With the right strategy and unity of purpose, APC will not remain on the sidelines in Enugu. We will be the party that sets the agenda and defines the next political direction of this state,” Nwoye stated.

On arrival at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, Nwoye told reporters that with Governor Peter Mbah’s entry into the APC, Enugu would “regain all that it had lost in the past.”

He described Mbah as a transformational leader who had achieved remarkable progress across various sectors within two years in office, adding that the governor’s move to the APC was for the collective good of his people.

Our correspondent reports that there was wild jubilation at the airport as enthusiastic APC members trooped out in large numbers to welcome Nwoye and members of his caretaker committee back to the state.

  • Our unity, not factionalism, will secure victory for Tinubu in 2027 – APC group

Our unity, not factionalism, will secure victory for Tinubu in 2027 – APC group

A support group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo State, the Asiwaju Media Team, has cautioned party members against factionalism ahead of the 2027 general election, stressing that only unity can guarantee victory for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid.

In a statement issued in Akure by its Director-General, Prince Emorioloye Owolemi, the group warned against the formation of “parallel structures” within the party by desperate individuals seeking political relevance under the guise of supporting the President.

According to the group, such moves are contrary to the ideals of unity, discipline, and loyalty that define the ruling APC.

“Our unity, not factionalism, will secure victory in 2027 and protect the progress we have fought for,” the statement read.

The group also expressed concern over renewed attempts by some individuals to destabilize the party by operating outside recognized structures.

It alleged that those behind the move were the same people who, two years ago, engaged in a scheme to collect money from opposition members under the pretext of securing federal appointments for them.

The statement added that the fraudulent act was reported to the presidency, which subsequently terminated the “illegally obtained” appointments.

“Since that exposure, those responsible have distanced themselves from genuine APC structures in Ondo State,” the group said.

“Rather than working with the party to promote good governance, they have resorted to false propaganda aimed at creating a rift between the President and the state leadership.

“If they truly seek redemption before the President after their earlier misconduct, they should have chosen the path of loyalty, contrition, and service – not further provocation.”

The group maintained that the so-called parallel organ neither participated in the 2023 campaigns nor holds any legitimate claim to party support ahead of 2027.

It further accused the sponsors of the dissident group of operating from Abuja and Port Harcourt to destabilize the peaceful coexistence of APC members in Ondo State instead of joining collective efforts to strengthen the party.

Describing their actions as self-defeating, the group said it was unacceptable for federal appointees to act as independent support groups when their conduct undermines the same party that gave them political platforms.

It also alleged that many of those behind the controversial groups were long-time political appointees who had held various offices since 1999 but were removed by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration to create room for new faces and broader inclusion.

“The Aiyedatiwa administration has deliberately opened the space for inclusion, giving opportunities to genuine APC loyalists who have served the party faithfully since its formation,” the statement noted.

The Asiwaju Media Team reaffirmed its total support for President Tinubu and Governor Aiyedatiwa, describing them as the national and state leaders of the party.

It added that those funding opposition narratives or spreading damaging information about federal and state officials were “neither helping the President nor the APC.”

  • Defections: Those remaining in PDP are undertakers — APC

Defections: Those remaining in PDP are undertakers — APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has described party leaders remaining in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as undertakers waiting for the final burial of the opposition party.

The APC Spokesman, Mr Seye Oladejo, in a statement on Saturday in Lagos, said this  while reacting to the recent defection  of some PDP leaders into APC.

Oladejo urged the former ruling party to stop downplaying  “the wave of defections currently rocking its already fractured structure”.

He said: “The PDP’s claim that defections cannot break it is not only laughable but also betrays the party’s chronic state of denial , delusion and self-deception.

“What is happening to the PDP today is not mere political migration, it is the inevitable consequence of years of internal deceit, lack of ideology, and serial betrayal among its leaders.

“When a house is built on quicksand, it does not take much for it to collapse.

“The ongoing exodus from the PDP is only a confirmation that even its loyalists have lost faith in a party that has consistently failed to reform itself or offer a credible alternative to Nigerians.

“The few remaining members of the PDP are perhaps the undertakers – staying behind only to perform the final rites and fittingly dispose of what remains of a once-dominant but now lifeless political carcass.”

According to him, the APC is not surprised at the wave of defections from PDP as  the opposition party  has only thrived on propaganda and empty rhetoric.

He claimed that the former ruling party had mismanaged the nation for 16 years before the coming of APC.

Oladejo said that PDP could not suddenly reinvent itself as a credible opposition “when it remains a cesspool of confusion and leadership vacuum”.

“The recent defection of key figures from the PDP to the APC is a testament to the growing confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“It will serve the PDP’s best interest to start learning to walk alone on the dark, bumpy road to 2027.

“The party is obviously over for the former “largest party in Africa,” and the sooner it confronts that reality, the less humiliating its final exit will be,” he added.

According to him, PDP should look inward, conduct an honest post-mortem of its failures, and come to terms with the reality that its relevance in Nigeria’s political space has drastically waned.

“The opposition cannot claim to be unshaken when its members are fleeing in droves to a party that represents progress, stability, and genuine leadership.

“For the APC, these defections are not just political victories – they are endorsements of our party’s enduring commitment to national renewal and people-centered governance.

“The Nigerian people are speaking loudly and the message is clear: the era of deceitful opposition politics is over,” Oladejo said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that a number of  PDP governors and members of the House of Assembly as well as  other key figures have recently dumped the party for APC.

On Thursday, two remaining PDP members in the Ondo State House of Assembly, defected to APC, citing internal crisis in the opposition party.

They are former House Minority Leader,Mr Olajide Oguntodu, representing Akure South 1 Constituency, and his deputy, Mr Oluwatoyin Daodu, representing Akoko South West 1 Constituency.
