  • APC set to take in defecting governors

APC set to take in defecting governors

The All Progressives Congress (APC) enlarged its coast yesterday as more opposition stalwarts joined the platform ahead of the 2027 general election.

Two opposition governors -one from the Southeast and another from the North – are expected to defect to the ruling party next week, a source said yesterday.

Also, the number of APC senators rose to 73, following the swearing in of Senators Joseph Ikpea (Edo Central) by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and the defection of Senator Kelvin Chukwu (Enugu East) from the Labour Party (LP).

Apart from Ikpea, who won the recent by-election to replace Senator Monday Okpebholo, governor of Edo State,  Senator Emmanuel Chibuzor (Enugu South) was also sworn in to replace Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who passed on last year.

Also today, the fate of a governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Kayode Ojo, whose case was referred to the NWC after he was given a provisional clearance by the Governorship Screening Committee chaired by Tunji Olawuyi, would be decided.

APC warming up for governors’ defection

According to  party sources, the planned defection of the governors is on the agenda of the NWC meeting today at the party’s secretariat in Abuja.

In anticipation of the governors’ defection, the NWC may dissolve the State Working Committee (SWC) and appoint a caretaker committee for the chapter.

The setting up of a caretaker committee is to facilitate the harmonisation of structures under the watch of the governor, who according to the APC tradition, automatically becomes the State Party Leader, following his defection.

Confirming the proposed defections of two governors, the source said: “Another important issue slated for deliberation at Thursday’s NWC meeting is the formal reception of two governors from the opposition into the party.

“One of the governors, who is from the Southeast, will be decamping formally next week and the party leadership has been directed to give him a befitting reception, hence, the NWC will be discussing it and perfecting all the necessary arrangements.”

He added: “The NWC may soon dissolve the SWC of the state ahead of the governor’s defection. This is to accommodate and create a level playing ground for the governor and the old party members.”

Some months ago, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno and his Delta counterpart, Sheriff Oborevwori, dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the APC.

During the defections in Uyo and Asaba, former APC National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, disclosed that more opposition governors and other chieftains would join the party.

APC attains two-third majority in Senate

With 73 senators, the ruling party attained a two-third majority in the 109-member Senate where 72 senators could pass any major decision or legislation.

Currently in the Red Chamber, the PDP has 28 senators; LP four, All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) two, and Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) have one each.

After the Acting Clerk to the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, administered the oath of office and oath of allegiance on both Ikpea and Chibuzor, both of them shook hands with Akpabio and submitted the certificates of return issued to them by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The ceremony was witnessed by former Delta State Governor James Ibori, former Edo State Deputy Governor and Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shuaibu, and the elder brother to the Edo Central Senator, Dr. Lee Ikpea.

Akpabio said ranking senators would continue to assist the new senators to get used to the nuances of lawmaking.

He said: “I must say that we are giving you two items today. One is the Nigerian Constitution, which you must try to imbibe the contents.

“It’s not just a ceremony. It’s to let you know that that’s the ground norm and that the authority in this hallowed chamber comes through the Nigerian Constitution.

“The second one that we are giving you, which you must start reading from today, is the Senate Standing Orders 2023 as amended.”

Akpabio added:  “The contents will show you the proceedings because sometimes, if you are new and you come in, you may not know why we do certain things at certain times and if the Presiding Officer should tell you that you are ruled out of order, please, don’t be angry.

“It’s because you have breached a section of the Standing Orders of the Senate and that’s what gives us discipline. That’s what gives us order. That’s what makes us distinguished. It distinguishes us from others.

“If you have been in the House of Assembly before, the Senate is slightly different because what is contained in what we are bringing you now is different from what you were used to. So please, take time to go through it and God will guide you.”

NWC to ratify Ekiti aspirants’ screening

The APC NWC would give its final verdict on the report of the Ekiti APC screening committee that gave Ojo provisional clearance today.

Two  of the four aspirants – Governor Biodun Oyebanji and Omolayo Oluremi – were given the nod to participate at the October 27 primary, having “satisfied all constitutional and party requirements”

While the third aspirant, Olajumoke Abimbola, was disqualified, Ojo, Pro-Chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka  (UNN), was not fully cleared.

The committee referred him to the NWC for final clearance, following petitions against his aspiration by some party members.

According to the panel, “this referral is necessitated by the weight of the petitions against him, particularly his failure to satisfy the mandatory threshold of five valid nominators per local government, and is intended to forestall potential litigation(s) that may arise from this deficiency which is inconsistent with Article 9(1) of the Constitution, which provides that only registered and financially up-to-date members of the party have the right to vote and be voted for, and Section 177 )c) of 1999 Constitution (as amended), which requires membership of a political party as a pre-requisite for eligibility to contest the Office of Governor.”

A source in the NWC said the Pro-Chancellor of University of Nigeria, Nsukka  (UNN) is likely to scale the hurdle.

He also said APC may adopt “direct mode” of primary for Ekiti in line with the recommendations of its  Directorate of Organisation.

The source added: “The Thursday (today’s) NWC meeting will be crucial, as final decision will be reached on Ekiti State governorship primary. The clearance of Engr. Kayode Ojo will be resolved at the meeting. Feelers among NWC members revealed that he (Ojo) would be cleared to contest at the primary.

“The committee will also ratify the direct mode of election as recommended by the Directorate of Organisation after wide consultations with party stakeholders in the state.”

APC strategises to win 2027 elections in Oyo

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has put measures in place on how it can be more united so as to win 2027 governorship and other elections.

The party lamented the activities of some aspirants seeking elective positions, who had been floating and nurturing groups, saying ‘’this is furthering causing divisions within the party, instead of uniting it.’’

In a communiqué issued at the end of its Leadership Summit in Ibadan, the party resolved that its interest must take precedent over and above personal interests, saying every aspirant, who had been floating groups within the party must desist.

The communiqué said the aspirants were enjoined to concentrate efforts on promoting APC, instead of promoting groups’ interests.

“We note that imposition of candidates for elective and party positions is unhealthy for peace, unity and cohesion within the party. We therefore advocate an all-inclusive, free, fair and transparent processes of electing party candidates and officials without external influence.

“There is gross misuse of social media platforms by some party members. Such misuse of social media platforms is further causing divisions within the party. We have therefore resolved that the use of social media as a means of passing information concerning the party must be controlled.

“We note that the absence of a rallying point is negatively affecting coordination within the party. We hereby resolve that in the absence of a sitting governor, who is a member of our party, it is imperative that a collegiate leadership comprising two nominees from the three senatorial zones be immediately put in place.

“We note that some aspirants have been campaigning and in the process, they are making inflammatory comments capable of further deepening divisions within the party.

“We therefore resolve that campaign activities are premature at the moment, most especially, taking into cognisance INEC’s guidelines. We therefore caution aspirants against making inflammatory statements and engaging in campaign activities, against INEC’s guidelines.

APC gains two-third majority in Senate as Akpabio swears-in two Senators

The All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday attained overwhelming two-thirds majority in Senate.

This development followed the swearing in of Joseph Ikpea representing Edo Central and the defection of Senator Kelvin Chukwu from the Labour Party (LP) into the APC. Chukwu represented Enugu East.

APC Senators in the 10th Senate are now 73 with only 72 Senators are needed to pass any major decision or legislation in the Senate.

Other parties and their members in the Senate include the PDP – 28, LP – 4,

Also yesterday, Akpabio swore in Emmanuel Nwachukwu Chibuzor to represent Anambra South in the Senate on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Both Ikpea and Chibuzor were declared winners of  their respective senatorial districts during the by-election conducted to fill existing vacancies by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recently.

While Ikpea won the seat vacated by Senator Monday Okpebholo now the Governor of Edo State, Chibuzor secured the seat left vacant following the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah who hitherto represented the Anambra South.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has unveiled new strategies to strengthen party unity and improve its chances of winning the 2027 governorship and other elections in the state.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its Leadership Summit held in Ibadan, the party expressed concern over the growing activities of some aspirants who have been floating and nurturing separate groups within the APC, warning that such actions are creating unnecessary divisions rather than fostering unity.

The party emphasised that collective interest must take precedence over personal ambition, urging aspirants to immediately discontinue the formation of parallel groups and instead channel their energy toward promoting the APC’s goals.

“We note that the imposition of candidates for elective and party positions is unhealthy for peace, unity, and cohesion within the party. We therefore advocate for an all-inclusive, free, fair, and transparent process of electing party candidates and officials without external influence,” the communiqué stated.

The APC leadership also raised concerns over the misuse of social media platforms by some members, noting that such behavior has fueled internal conflicts. The party resolved to regulate how social media is used for sharing information about party activities to maintain discipline and harmony among members.

“We note that the absence of a rallying point is negatively affecting coordination within the Party. APC group urges Eno to sack appointees loyal to ex-Gov

The Progressive Advocates, a group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, has urged Governor Umo Eno to sack his appointees still be loyal to his predecessor Udom Emmanuel.

The group made the call on Monday in an open letter addressed to the Governor by its chancellor,  Mr. Anthony Peter, secretary,Pastor Okon John and publicity secretary, Comrade Felix Ita.

In the letter in Uyo, it expressed worries that the Governor might not succeed with disloyal government functionaries most of they alleged were handpicked by his predecessor.

The letter reads in parts: “We write to express deep concern over the growing wave of divided loyalties among key functionaries of your government.

“This development poses a serious threat to the success of your administration and the viability of your re-election bid.

“It has become a matter of public knowledge that about 97% of your current appointees, including members of the State Executive Council, personal aides, local government chairmen, and members of the State and National Assemblies, were handpicked by the immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State.

“While such political inheritance might have appeared strategic at the onset, it has now become clear that many of these individuals remain more loyal to their benefactor than to you or to the administration you lead.

“Your Excellency, it would be an act of political naivety to expect such appointees to dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to your vision, your policies, or your political survival.

“These individuals have, in various ways, frustrated government initiatives, leaked sensitive information, and undermined your authority in the execution of your Arise Agenda”.

The group said it was not a hidden secret that  the immediate past Governor is not happy with Eno’s recent movement to the APC and may do anything to sabotage his administration.

“They have become moles and viruses within your administration — serving as channels of internal sabotage while pretending to be loyal aides.

“As part of their coordinated sabotage, these same disgruntled elements have taken to pushing false narratives in political and media circles, claiming that you have no appreciable scorecard to justify the huge resources that have accrued to the State’s coffers since you assumed office.

“In doing so, they deliberately ignore the visible strides of your administration in infrastructure, education, rural development, and governance reforms.

“Their objective is to erode public confidence in your leadership and create the impression of failure where tangible progress exists — a cynical plot designed to weaken your moral standing and embolden their godfather’s continued political relevance.

“Worse still, reliable intelligence and observable political patterns indicate that these viruses within your team are working in active cahoots with the immediate past governor to systematically weaken the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State.

“Their strategy is clear: to use their positions within your administration to undermine the credibility of genuine APC loyalists, frustrate grassroots mobilization, and sink the party’s structure ahead of the next election cycle”, the group added.

The Nation reports there is cold war between Eno and his predecessor over the Governor’s defection to the APC.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) reinstated local government area chairmen have vowed to recall over 1,500 sacked workers and offset the traditional rulers’ salary arrears once the Federal Government releases the withheld council allocation.

The Nation recalls that federal government had withheld the council allocation since February 2025 when members of APC and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) were laying claim to the control of the council following a verdict of the Appeal Court.

Meanwhile, the federal government in September released six month withheld allocations to the council accounts opened by the LGAs’ chairmen of the APC.

The Chairman of Association of Local Government of Nigeria, Abiodun Idowu, of the APC faction, reaffirmed the commitment of the council chairmen to grassroots governance.

Ekiti APC primary: Ojo awaits NWC’s decision on clearance

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Kayode Ojo, has got provisional clearance to participate at the primary.

The provisional clearance followed his failure to secure the mandatory five nominators per local government.

The Screening Committee chaired by Tola Olawuyi forwarded his case to the National Working Committee (NWC) for final ‘judgment.

Party members at the grassroots have urged the national leadership to disqualify him from further participating in the exercise.

The shadow poll scheduled for October 27 is likely to be conducted, based on the direct option. The election is next year.

Four contenders – Governor Biodun Oyebanji, Ojo, an engineer, Olajumoke Abimbola and Omolayo Oluremi – were initially competing for the ticket.

However, a contender, Olajumoke dropped after failing the screening, leaving three in the race.

Oyebanji was “cleared, having satisfied all constitutional and party requirements.”

While Oyebanji and Oluremi were given the nod to prepare for the intra-party contest, Ojo only got provisional clearance. His case is yet to be decided by the NWC.

Abimbola, who is active on the social media, is considered as a starter who cannot pass any popularity test in the chapter.

Two chieftains – Sunday Oladipupo (Igbemo Ward, Irepodun/ Ifelodun Local Government) and Amos Oladipo (Imesi Ward 5, Gbonyi Local Government) –  forwarded a petition against her.

Unlike the governor who has been endorsed by the majority of party stalwarts during the statewide endorsement rally in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital, and all the 16 local governments, many Ekiti APC leaders have also disputed Ojo’s eligibility for the exercise, alleging that he is not loyal to the platform.

Ojo’s battle cry has not attracted a mass following in the far-flung rural state, where only  aspirants who know the language of the communities, and not those who uncritically flaunt wealth, have prospects.

Instructively in Ekiti, unity, identity, group conformity, and trust are built around that cultural aspect of life by the generality of unique people that relishes the virtue of ‘omoluabi.’

A lawyer, Yuletude Oghenekao Ako, stated in  the petition to the chairman of the Screening Committee, Tunji Olawuyi, in Abuja on behalf of Oladipupo and Oladipo, that Olajumoke should prove that he is a “registered and financially up-to-date” party member who has the right to vote and be voted for at the primary.

Copies of the petition were sent to the APC national chairman, national secretary and secretary of the screening committee.

The petitioners alleged that while five members from each of the 16 councils should sign her nomination form, only 19 valid members signed, thereby failing to meet the threshold of 80 as expected.

According to them, “except in Ado Local Government with seven nominators,;she also did not satisfy the requirements of five nominators per local government in the remaining 14 local governments as contained in the guidelines.”

In their view, the aspirant should also prove that she has not misled the committtee with the information he furnished and that she fully complied with the rules, requirements and guidelines.

They said to safeguard the credibility of the screening process, the committee should disqualify Olajumoke from further participation in the exercise on three grounds.

The grounds, as alleged, are that she is not a bona fide party member; she was not duly nominated by the required number of nominators, and for the deficiency in her nomination form.

Olajumoke denied the allegations. But the committee reported that her name is not in the register of financial members.

Also, in a petition on behalf of Tayo Egunlusi (Iworoko, Irepodun/  Ifelodun Local Government) and Gbenga Osungbekun (Aramoko Ward 1, Ekiti West Local Government) by their lawyer, Sylvester Evbuomwan, the two party members urged the committee to disqualify Ojo from further participation in the screening and nomination process.

They alleged that Ojo failed to participate in the last membership revalidation exercise conducted in Ekiti between August 5 and 15, adding that consequently, his name does not appear in the verified Register of Members of the APC in the state.

To them, this has violated Article 9(1) of the APC Constitution which provides that only registered and financially up-to-date members have the right to vote and be voted for.

Also, the petitioners alleged that Ojo has persistently engaged in anti-party activities, pointing out that he has openly collaborated with opposition elements in Ekiti to “with a clear intent to weaken and destabilse the APC.”

They added:”This conduct is evidenced by his repeated public disparagement and unguarded outbursts against the leadership of the party,

“Furthermore, in flagrant violation of the APC Constitution, which expressly prohibits members from instituting legal proceedings against the partywithout first exhausting internal mechanisms for dispute resolution, Ojoinstituted court actions against the APC, following his lossain the party primary .

“Article 21 (2) (xi) of the APC Constitution stipulates that any member who files an action in court against the party or any of its officers without first exhausting the internal remedies shall be deemed to have committed an offence.

“Since the conclusion of the 2022 APC primary, he has willifully distanced himself from the party by refusing to attend, participate in or support APC activities at the ward, local government or state levels, including the membership revalidation exercise conducted in Ekiti State.”

The petitioners urged the screening committee and the party leadership  to thoroughly investigate these allegations, particularly Ojo’s non-mwmbership status and record of anti-party activities.

They also said the panel should uphold the provisions of the party constitution , which eshrine loyalty, discipline and good standing as pre-requisites for party membership and participation in party affairs.

The chieftains said the committee should “disqualify Ojo from further participation in the screening process as he lacks the locus standi as s memmber and loyalty required as an aspirant on the platform of the  APC.”

In his response to the petitions, Ojo denied non-participation in the membership validation and anti-party activities. He insisted that that his nominators are financial members, although he could not provide a certified party register to substantiate their membership.

In its report, the committee is satisfied that Ojo’s name is in the validated membership register. However, the panel is not satisfied with his failure to provide credible evidence confirming the financial status of his nominators, a requirement fundamental to the validity of his nomination. This implies that the aspirant is not popular with the generality of party members.

Ojo was therefore, granted “provisional clearance, with the final decision referred to the National Working Committee (NWC) for further consideration.

The committee said:”This referral is necessitated by the weight of the petitions against him, particularly his failure to satisfy the mandatory threshold of five valid nominators per local government, and is intended to forestall potential litigation(s) that may arise from this deficiency which is inconsistent with Article 9(1) of the Constitution, which provides that only registered and financially up-to-date members of the party have the right to vote and be voted for, and Section 177 )c) of 1999 Constitution (as amended), which requires membership of a political party as a pre-requisite for eligibility to contest the Office of Governor. “

Osun 2026: Akande, Oyetola will ensure best candidate for APC, says ex-lawmaker

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Mr Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has said the National Leader of the party, Chief Bisi Akande, and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr Gboyega Oyetola, will work with other stakeholders to field the best candidate in the 2026 governorship election.

He said Akande and Oyetola had the prowess and experience to ensure a credible process in the emergence of the candidate, who would return APC to office in the next governorship poll.

The APC chieftain, who said this while speaking with reporters yesterday in Osogbo, expressed confidence that the party would win the governorship election.

Oyintiloye says although the number of aspirants keeps growing, the party leadership will ensure the electorate get the best out of them.

He said although the 10 aspirants, who had shown interest, were qualified to contest the election, only one could emerge.

“All the aspirants of the APC have the capacity to contest and win the election, but unfortunately, only one person can be the party’s candidate.

“However, the number of aspirants who have shown interest will not be a problem because Baba Akande, our national leader, and Oyetola, the leader of the party in the state, will pick the best for Osun people,” he said.

Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker, appealed to the aspirants to support whoever emerged as the party’s candidate.

He said the governorship election was crucial and must be won, hence the need for the aspirants to work together for the party’s victory.

Oyintiloye said the party would wrest power from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
