Amotekun arrests prime suspect in killing of APC chairman in Ondo

Operatives of the Ondo State Security Network Agency, known as the Amotekun Corps, have arrested a prime suspect linked to the killing of Nelson Adepoyigi, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ward 5, in Ose Local Government Area.

Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, disclosed this on Monday while parading over 30 suspects involved in various criminal activities across the state.

“We have apprehended one of the prime suspects who masterminded the killing of the APC ward chairman in Ose LGA,” Adeleye said during a press briefing in Akure. “He led us into the bush where we recovered some incriminating items from him.”

Adepoyigi was abducted last month along the Ifon-Owo Road while returning from his farm and was later killed by his captors. His death sparked outrage within the local community and among political stakeholders.

The arrest, according to Adeleye, marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation and efforts to curb violent crimes in the state.

  • ADA won’t stop Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 — APC Chieftain Okechukwu

    ADA won’t stop Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 — APC Chieftain Okechukwu

A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Osita Okechukwu, has dismissed concerns that the newly proposed political party, All Democratic Alliance (ADA), poses a threat to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Speaking with journalists in Abuja on Sunday, the former Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) described the formation of ADA as a welcome development that enriches Nigeria’s multiparty democracy.

“My take on the formation of the All Democratic Alliance is that it is a welcome development. I am an apostle of multiparty systems that allow all voices to be heard and all flowers to blossom,” Okechukwu said.

When asked if ADA’s possible registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would be a threat to the APC, he replied: “I thinks sincerely that contrary to their promoters’ success mindset, ADA will actually enhance our party’s victory, especially President Tinubu’s second term.”

Okechukwu criticized what he described as the flawed assumptions behind ADA’s strategy, particularly the belief that northern voters would automatically back a northern presidential candidate.

“They seem to think northern voters are quartered in dormitories, waiting to be hauled to polling booths. They ignore the fact that the northern electorate is among the most sophisticated in Nigeria’s political history,” he said.

He also dismissed claims that the North is disenchanted with President Tinubu, calling such narratives “village square tales.”

“Are they suggesting the massive infrastructural projects and regional development commissions under Tinubu are a fluke? Or that local government financial autonomy is just idle talk?” he asked.

Okechukwu further described the promoters’ argument that the South would have ruled Nigeria for 17 years by 2027, compared to the North’s 11, as a misleading and biased calculation.

He maintained that historically, the North has held presidential power longer than the South since Nigeria’s independence in 1960.

“That the north has presided over Nigeria more than the south was the premise people of goodwill and patriotic Nigerian politicians considered before instituting the rotation convention that president should rotate from north to south and vice versa in 1999.”

Asked his take if after his permutation the ADA decides to nominate a southerner as presidential candidate, Okechukwu quipped, “even if they respect the rotation convention and float a southern candidate, one is afraid that their huge appetite for power will becloud their vision and broadmindedness to accommodate folks in the PDP, APGA, NNPP and Labour Party.”

APC slams Makinde for proposing N63.5 billion to renovate Oyo Govt House

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised Governor Seyi Makinde over his administration’s decision to spend N63.5 billion on the renovation of the Agodi Government House, describing the move as wasteful and insensitive.

In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC condemned the approval, stating it reflects a level of profligacy and disregard for the economic realities facing the state.

The Oyo State Executive Council had last Wednesday announced the approval of N63.5 billion for a comprehensive overhaul of Government House structures, alongside N132 million for the hiring of professional gardeners to maintain green areas and other parts of the governor’s residence.

An additional N14.3 billion was also approved for the purchase of an Instrument Landing System (ILS) for the Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan.

Sadare accused Governor Makinde of treating the people of Oyo State with disdain, adding that instead of addressing pressing developmental issues, the governor was justifying the spending spree by proposing the purchase of two aircraft to purportedly monitor criminal activities from the air.

Sadare said, “We watched keenly as concerned individuals and groups across the globe condemned the decision of Gov. Makinde to record another ugly stride in his penchant for financial recklessness and wasting of public funds through the payment of huge sums on white elephant projects and misplaced priorities.

“Interestingly, most of those who did not take us seriously when we raised the alarm on the production of 212,505 copies of exercise books for public school pupils at the rate of N2100 per copy in 2019 are now the leading voices against the same Gov. Makinde.

“To make the matter, Gov. Makinde failed to justify the decision to expend so many billions on the renovation of structures which had been built to last for decades, several years ago and renovated to taste by the immediate past administration of the ever-neat and classy Senator Abiola Ajimobi in 2017.

“All that played out in Gov. Makinde’s official address to the state lawmakers at the Oyo State House of Assembly on Thursday was a futile attempt to cover up a case of brazen corruption and impunity.

“At the same time, Gov. Makinde has a lot to tell the world about a criminal case of contract splitting which has been established in the ongoing upgrade of Alakia Airport because he has not explained why he had to release another N10billion and now N14.3billion for the same project estimated to gulp N14.3billion to complete and after full payment had been made, the governor keeps making fresh budget as extra billions are being paid by the state government.”

  • Defection to APC by Gov Eno is good thinking

Defection to APC by Gov Eno is good thinking

    • By Anietie  Usen

It may be heartbreaking for many Akwa Ibom people to contemplate the prospect of joining and voting for any other political party except the PDP. The PDP is in the DNA of Akwa Ibom voters. One of the reasons is that all the gigantic and nationally acclaimed  development strides of the State since the return of democratic rule in 1999 have been accomplished by the hands of PDP governments. The sentiments of the people for the PDP is therefore very understandable. PDP has done the State proud.

Whenever politicians in Akwa Ibom boast that PDP is a religion in the State, the meaning is that Akwa Ibom people are committed and devoted to the PDP as they are to their churches. As a matter of fact, some Akwa Ibom people are more committed to PDP than to their churches.

The implication is that just as it is difficult to move Akwa Ibom people en masse from their churches to another church, so it is to change Akwa Ibom minds from their abiding love and loyalty to the PDP. It is organic.

But that’s just one side of the story. The other side of the story is in two parts. First, the love of Akwa Ibom people for their Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, who is just two years old in office is  exceptional, unprecedented and perhaps extreme. There is an outpouring of love for this Governor across party lines and a groundswell of goodwill for him across the length and breath of the State. It is second to none in the 38 years history of this oil-and-gas rich State on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean.

This is not just because of his down-to-earth and grassrooted style of leadership, but  more so because of his deep sense of fairness in allocating State resources and doing justice to every section of the State, devoid of discrimination. Everywhere he went in the two years as governor, he was doing good. He connected deeply with the high and the low in the land, and secured a place squarely in the hearts of the overwhelming majority of the people.

Second, Governor Eno is championing so many multi-billion dollar  legacy projects, most of them inherited from previous Administrations, which  is showcasing him more as a veritable statesman than a Nigerian politician.

Some of those major projects which include the Aircraft Maintenance, Repair and Overall, MRO, the first in West Africa, and the Ibom Deep Seaport, are loaded with impactful economic consequences that go beyond Akwa Ibom and Nigeria, to the West African sub-Region and the Gulf of Guinea economic zone.

These are real strategic investments for the country in a strategic State on the shores of Atlantic Oceans, that is manned by a serious-minded Governor who has commanded the respect of leaders across the political divide and which the federal government under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, cannot ignore.

So just like the PDP, the love for Governor Eno in Akwa Ibom State and beyond is organic, extensive and catholic. There is nothing anybody can do about that, except, perhaps envy his style and track record of accomplishment.

He has in a very short span of two years won the hearts of the people, for his empathy, compassion and identification with the plight of the less privileged. His trait as a humble and humane leader is not because he is a pastor and has some godly influence over him. It is because that’s who he is: a good and caring man, a sincere servant of his people, a great leader, firm and fair in his dealings. For that, he is adored, even by his political opponents, if any, these days.

But there is a twist in the tale. Governor Eno, the pride of PDP has joined the APC, the ruling party at the centre, to align forces with the federal government, and strengthen his hands in the face of the legacy projects he is driving. It is even more compelling for him to join the APC now because the ill health of the PDP is open s secret.

What then shall separate Akwa Ibom from the love of the PDP? Shall Umo Eno? Wither the love of Akwa Ibom people now?  This is the political crossroad and a dilemma  that Akwa Ibom people have found themselves in at this point in time. It is the talk of the town, in beer parlours, market squares, University campuses and even churches. Where goes the love of Akwa Ibom people in times like this? To the PDP or to Governor Umo Eno or to both?

To be sure, Governor Umo Eno himself is not different from most Akwa Ibom people. He is a passionate lover of PDP. He speaks with deep affection and respect about the party and former Governor Udom Emmanuel, who afforded this affable, rural pastor the opportunity to become a governor in the midst of redoubtable political stalwarts. But there is a spanner in the works or as the Americans would say it “a wrench”. There is a problem.

Right now, the PDP that Akwa Ibom people love so much is virtually in comatose at the National level; afflicted on every side and almost crushed; perplexed and almost driven to dispair; hunted down and almost abandoned.

Everyday you turn on the TV, there is news of the PDP heavyweights, governors, Senators and other National Assembly members, trooping out from the PDP to the APC. It was the legendary Chinua Achebe who wrote that “whenever you see a toad jumping in the broad daylight, then know that something is after its life”.

It would appear to many observers that something is after the life of the PDP. There are forces, external and internal, centrifugal and centripetal, hunting down and determined to see the total eclipse of the PDP ahead of the 2027 elections. If you were a politician and a prospective second term governorship candidate in the shoes of Governor Umo Eno, what would you do?

Many members of the PDP are doing something about it. Some are now scampering and exiting the party in droves in the hope of forming another party. But the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said two weeks ago, it was not in the mood to register new parties.

One of the affected groups gunning for registration as a new party is the National Opposition Coalition Group, that is planning to challenge the APC, the ruling party, in the 2027 elections. The Coalition was seeking to be registered and known as All Democratic Alliance, ADA. But INEC, for now, seemed to have pulled the rug from under their feet.

When a house is totally on fire, the most important action is to prioritize safety and get yourself and family out of the building as quickly as possible. In plain language, as at today, the PDP as a vehicle for contesting the 2027 election is, at best, risky and perhaps broken down.

The uncertainties in the party right now are too many to be ignored. The great PDP that ruled Nigeria from 1999-2015 is today factionalised, fractionalised and saddled with three National Secretaries, namely, Samuel Anyanwu, Udeh Okoye and Setonji Koshoedo, appointed as the Acting National Secretary, three weeks ago in the midst of a seemingly stubborn and intractable  party crisis. Which of these three National Secretaries will sign the nomination forms of Governor Eno for a well-deserved second term? Which of the three National Secretaries, if any, will eventually be backed up by the party, legal technicalities and the almighty courts, if the case returns to the court ?

Cases abound in Plateau and Zamfara States in the recent past where landslide election winners later became losers in the courts and were replaced by those who barely garnered a handful of votes in distant second positions. What happened in Zamfara and Plateau is the fig tree that a foresighted leader like Governor Eno must learn from. No politician wants to go through such a catastrophic ordeal of being thrown out of office on technical grounds after winning a hard fought election.

And then there is the issue of Congresses of the parties, which are willy-nilly coming up in August this year, and particularly the implications of the Congresses for the 2027 elections.

Against this kind of backdrop, Governor Eno is wise, proactive and right to lead his ardent supporters to join the APC. This is good thinking.

Before he relocated to the APC a week ago, the Governor took time to explain and justify his decision to his teeming PDP loyalists. Sometimes, he did it with parables and analogies. At other times, he spoke in clear terms to people in his inner circles about the departure to APC.

On Sunday, June 1, 2025, during the Covenant Service in the State House, usually held on the first day of every month and attended by elites in the State, the governor waxed Biblical as he made one of his last ditch attempts to persuade the State to follow him to the APC.

Instead of his standard remarks at the end of the Covenant Service, that usually pointed to the activities and policy direction of the government, the Governor simply mounted the pulpit and gave out four Bible portions to be read at home by the elites. The Bible portions were: Romans 8:31-37, 2 Samuel 15, Psalm 34:19 and Numbers 10:29-32.

Here is what Numbers 10:29-32 says: “One day Moses said to his brother-in-law, Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, “We are on our way to the place the LORD promised us, for he said, ‘I will give it to you.’ Come with us and we will treat you well, for the LORD has promised wonderful blessings for Israel!” [30] But Hobab replied, “No, I will not go. I must return to my own land and family.” [31] “Please don’t leave us,” Moses pleaded. “You know the places in the wilderness where we should camp. Come, be our guide. [32] If you do, we’ll share with you all the blessings the LORD gives us.”

Many have read the Bible portions between the lines and have decided to follow him. As President Tinubu visits Akwa Ibom on Saturday, June 21, 2025, to formally welcome Governor Eno into the APC, there will be no doubt that Akwa Ibom people love and trust the thinking and leadership of their governor.

The United Kingdom chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Delta State, has extended warm congratulations to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, on his 62nd birthday, describing him as a visionary leader whose calm but resolute leadership continues to drive progress across the state.

In a goodwill message jointly signed by the chapter’s Chairman, Barr. Lucky A. Gbenedio, and other executive members including, Jude Bakpa, Pastor Sheddy Okpako, Ms. Bimbo Susu James, and Mrs. Maggi Idris Faruk Jr., the group praised the Governor’s inclusive governance style and unwavering commitment to the upliftment of all Deltans irrespective of political affiliations.

According to the statement in London on Thursday, the Delta APC UK Chapter noted that Governor Oborevwori’s bold infrastructure development drive and grassroots-focused initiatives under the MORE Agenda have begun to significantly transform the socio-economic landscape of the state. The group highlighted key road projects, educational infrastructure, and urban renewal programs as examples of purposeful governance.

“Governor Oborevwori’s leadership has transcended political lines. What we are witnessing is a governor who is focused on service delivery, stability, and the long-term growth of Delta State. His humility, accessibility, and deep understanding of the needs of the people are admirable,” the executives noted.

2027: APC warns members against anti-party activities in Oyo

The Oyo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stern warning to its members, urging them to desist from actions that could undermine the party’s unity and its ambition to reclaim power in the state by 2027.

In a statement signed by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the APC cautioned members against holding meetings, making public statements, or engaging in behaviours deemed detrimental to the party’s collective goals.

The warning followed recent media reports in which two unnamed APC leaders were quoted as praising Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration — remarks the party interpreted as aligning too closely with the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.

Sadare emphasized that the APC would no longer tolerate disloyalty, sabotage, or indiscipline from members or stakeholders who prioritize personal interests over the party’s vision.

“But for selfishness and poor orientation borne out of indiscipline and myopia, no reasonable member of the APC would turn himself into a propaganda machinery for the current PDP administration, which has mortgaged the future of the unborn generations by wasting enormous resources on frivolities and inanity in the last six years.

“We found the conduct of the culpable personalities highly reprehensible and irresponsible in view of the fact that they both laid claims to being chieftains of our great Party up till the present moment.

“For the avoidance, Oyo APC has had enough dose of sabotage, conspiracy and other acts of disloyalty from supposed members as the present leadership is poised to wield the big stick against recalcitrant individuals whose goal is to see our Party in disarray at every crucial time.

“The Olayide Abas-led state executive and other relevant stakeholders have done so much in terms of reaching out for genuine reconciliation and stability, with evident positive results to show for it. Now that more eminent citizens are coming into the Oyo APC in droves, anybody with plans to draw us back would be treated like an enemy of the state.

“We have done our diligence and established that those who parade themselves as APC chieftains and still work for the PDP in recent times have no reason to engage in such shameful acts, but we would engage them as democrats since some schools of thought are of the opinion that they were either misinformed or misrepresented.

“However, every member of our great Party is expected to key into the Project 2027, which is aimed at delivering Oyo state to the APC wholly in the next general election.”

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State yesterday directed all candidates of the party for the July 12 Local Government Election to submit their blueprints to the party secretariat.

This, the party, said would be yardsticks to assess their performances when elected.

This was one of the directions handed over to the candidates during the presentation of flags to the party’s flag-bearers.

All roads led to the Acme, Ikeja, the secretariat of the APC.

Party stalwarts and faithful yesterday joined the 114 Chairmanship and Vice-Chairmanship and 376 councillorship candidates for the official kick-off of the council election campaign.

All the candidates shone in uniform attires while their supporters clad in different APC-customised outfits.

Leadership of the Lagos State Police Command ensured the party secretariat was not overcrowded. They did a good job in keeping those who had no business in the sprawling compound at outside the venue.

The cheering crowd waved brooms, the symbol of the party intermittently to show their readiness for the campaign exercise.

Chairman of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), Prince Tajudeen Olusi, led other members of the council including the Secretary, Alhaji Mutiu Are; Princess Sarah Sosan; and Senator Musiliu Obanikoro. Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Abimbola Salu- Hundeyin and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso led state executive members to the gathering.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, enjoined the candidates to deliver electoral promises to the people when elected.

He appealed to the party members to ensure victory for the party at the poll.

The governor, represented by Mrs Salu-Hundeyin, assured the candidates of government’s support to emerge winners in the election.

He said: “The love I have for this party is unquantifiable, I am with all the candidates, this is not just an official flag off, it symbolises the beginning of hard work and dedication. We are solidly behind every aspirant, we are in this together, all will be successful by God’s grace. “As we raise these flags today, we are proud and happy. Let us remember our values and principles, we are known for being a progressive movement. “We are not only here to win an election, we are here to change the lives of our people and continue the legacy of our President.”

APC Lagos State Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, applauded party leaders and aspirants for ensuring peace before, during and after the primaries.

Ojelabi, who noted that the party had done a lot to  reconcile aggrieved aspirants, urged flag bearers to continue reconciliation and winning those that contested against them to their sides.

According to him, out of the 475 aspirants that vied for chairmanship tickets, only 57 chairmanship candidates were finally selected.

He urged the candidates to try to meet the needs of the people in education, health, infrastructure development and youth development and other critical areas, if elected.

While reiterating the need for the candidates to submit their blueprints, Ojelabi said the party would continue to monitor their performance.

Prince Olusi urged the party’s flag bearers to work for the people, when elected.

“This is an opportunity for you to promote the name of our party. It is sad today that those looking for money are many in politics, and not people who really want to serve.

“The love of our community and society should be paramount to us. Those who vied for the ticket but could not get it, should be patient because there is still time and tomorrow,” he said.

Prince Olusi said grassroots governance is critical, hence the need for office holders at the local government level to take care of the people and impact them.

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa, reminded the gathering that the July 12 election is a yardstick for what to come in 2027 when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would be seeking a re-election.

He said the party cannot afford not to deliver.

Obasa appealed to those who lost during the primary election to accept the decisions of the party and support the party’s candidates.

“The party is supreme; we must stand by the decision of the party. We must obey the party and support all our candidates. We must not fight ourselves,” he said.

Chairman of APC Campaign Committee, Alhaji Babatunde Balogun, who welcomed the candidates, expressed confidence that all the flag bearers would be victorious at the polls.

Balogun, who urged the party’s campaign Local Organising Committee (LOC) in each council area to start rigorous mobilisation of voters, however, cautioned that no campaign should exceed the June 9 deadline, stipulated in the electoral guidelines.

According to him, the LOC should be co-chaired in each council by the APC LGA chairman and the council chairmen.

“The LOC must work with various groups including ethnic nationalities “so that we can achieve great results. Let us move across all the wards and garner votes for the party,” he said

The chairmanship candidates who received party flags included: Azeez Babatunde (Agege); Idowu Akinola (Orile-Agege); Johnson Akinpelu (Alimosho); Adunni Akindele (Mosan Okunola); Lukman Abiodun (Ayobo-Ipaja); Abiodun Ejigbadero (Agbado Oke-Odo) and Idris Balogun (Egbe- Idimu).

Lagos council poll: APC hands over flags to candidates

All roads led to the Acme, Ikeja, the secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Tuesday as the ruling party in Lagos State handed over flags to its flag-bearers for the forthcoming July 12 Local Government Election.

Party stalwarts and faithful joined the 114 Chairmanship and Vice-Chairmanship and 376 councillorship candidates for the official kick-off of the council election campaign.

All the candidates shone in uniform attires while their supporters clad in different APC-customised outfits.

Leadership of the Lagos Police Command ensured the party secretariat was not overcrowded.

He said that the party would continue to monitor the performance of all its elected officers.
