APC primary: Obasa urges tolerance, unity among aspirants ahead of Lagos council polls

Ahead of the July 12 local government elections in Lagos State, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has called for unity and tolerance among political stakeholders in Agege and Orile-Agege, particularly those who contested in the recently concluded chairmanship primaries.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting held on Sunday at Central Primary School, Agege, Obasa appealed to aggrieved aspirants to trust the judgment of party leaders and accept the outcome of the primaries in good faith.

He acknowledged that all the aspirants were qualified to lead but emphasised that leadership positions are limited and governed by due process.

“There is none of the aspirants that is not qualified,” he said. “But we must understand that this is not a family inheritance—it is a political position governed by law and procedure, and only one person can occupy the seat at a time.”

Obasa urged aspirants who were not successful to channel their disappointment constructively within the party and not allow frustration to escalate into conflict.

“I was once a victim like some of you,” he added, “but it is important to keep our grievances within the party and move forward united.”

“But you must learn to exercise patience and have confidence in the process. You must believe in the judgement of our leaders. Everybody is qualified to be a leader but all of us cannot be a leader. Learn to trust the party and its leaders. We must not fight them. If we want to appeal, let’s start now.”

He observed that the forthcoming local government polls is a litmus test test on the 2027 general election reason all hands must be on deck to attain victory.

He added, “We must reach out to others. Let’s make them understand the need to come back. If they didn’t get it today, it will be their turn tomorrow. We must work together. We cannot do it alone. This isn’t the ultimate. We are much interested in the 2027 election. But we will use this to measure what will happen in 2027. This isn’t about the chairmanship and councillorship election; it goes beyond that. Our target is 2027. So, let’s bring everybody out to vote.

“If we can increase the number of votes, we had in 2023 during this local poll then we can go to rest. We must bring everybody together and the journey starts now. We must learn to tolerate one another. We must intensify our efforts and reach out to members of the community to come out to vote.”

Speaking on unity and cohesion among members of the party in the council areas, Chairman, Agege Local Government Area, Hon. Ganiyu Edunjobi, there are no aggrieved members in Agege noting that all members are one and united family.

He said, “We have only one APC in Agege. I don’t understand what you meant by disunity. All I understand is that during election period, many people aspire to the positions. There is nothing wrong in that. About 20 or 40 people can aspire for just one seat but after the primary, its important we bring ourselves together as one to support the party candidate.

“We have the crowd. These are party members. They came out of their desire, nobody forced them. All of these people you are seeing are from Agege. They are here for sensitisation. We want them to go back to their various homes and reach out to others on the need to come out to vote on July 12. There are no aggrieved politicians in Agege. We are one united family.”

His counterpart in Orile-Agege LCDA, Hon. Johnson Babatunde, described the gathering as solidarity and declaration of support to the party candidates.

He urged the winners at the primaries to be humble in victory while urging the losers to be sportsmanlike in defeat.

He said, “It’s a solidarity with our candidates in Agege local government and Orile-Agege LCDA. In Agege, our chairmanship candidate is Hon. Tunde Azeez while the vice-chairmanship candidate is Abdul-Ganiu Obasa.

“In Orile-Agege, we have Akinola Idowu as the chairman and Wale Fayemi as the vice-chairman. We are here in solidarity and to declare our support that we are solidly behind them. You can see the number of people that are here, that shows we have popular candidates on the ballot.”

Member representing Agege Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. (Dr) Wale Ahmed, described the gathering as an APC event to mobilise and sensitise the masses on the need to vote for the candidates of the party.

He stated, “The leadership of the party has successfully chosen candidates for the forthcoming local government polls. We are here to motivate and energise the people towards the July 12 local government elections.”

Governor Namadi to Jigawa PDP lawmakers: ‘Start counting your days, APC is taking over’

Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has declared that opposition lawmakers from the state should begin counting their days in office, citing the growing popularity of the All Progressives Congress (APC) across the state.

Speaking at the Jigawa State Government Citizens Engagement Programme (JSGCEP), tagged ‘Gwamnati da Jama’a, held at the Jigawa State Sports Complex in Dutse, Governor Namadi received over 3,500 defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) into the APC.

Addressing the gathering, the governor noted that the mass defections are a clear indication that APC is gaining strong ground in the Jigawa South-West Senatorial District, which comprises seven local government areas.

“With what we have witnessed here in Dutse, as well as in Birnin Kudu and Buji, where thousands more have joined the APC, it’s evident that the PDP senator representing this zone, along with the House of Representatives members for Birnin Kudu/Buji and Dutse/Kiyawa, and the PDP state assembly members, should begin counting their remaining days in the Red and Green chambers, as well as the state assembly,” Namadi said.

He attributed the growing support for the APC to widespread satisfaction with the government’s performance in human and infrastructural development across the zone.

Governor Namadi also conveyed messages from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, assuring citizens of Dutse and Jigawa State of the federal government’s continued commitment to key infrastructure projects.

These include the ongoing Greater Dutse Water Project, the Kano-Dutse-Damagaram railway line, and the Kano-Shuwari federal road, which he confirmed has been re-awarded and is under active construction.

Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to fulfilling its promises to the people of Dutse and the entire state.

He expressed gratitude for the warm reception and support, which he said reflect appreciation for his administration’s investments in healthcare, education, road construction, water supply, job creation, and economic empowerment.

He also promised that all the requests submitted during the engagement would be reviewed.

“Those already captured in this year’s budget will be implemented, while others will be considered in the next budget, Insha’Allah,” the governor assured.

    •  …commends Tinubu, Ganduje’s NWC

The Progressive Voters’ Forum (PVF), a support group of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has described the upcoming APC National Summit in Abuja as a strategic step to strengthen internal unity and position the party for success in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the National Coordinator of PVF, Dr. Olusegun Kenneth, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC National Working Committee (NWC) led by Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for initiating the first-ever National Summit of the party.

Scheduled to hold on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the summit is themed, “Renewed Hope Agenda: The Journey So Far” and will begin at 10:00 a.m.

President Tinubu is expected to lead other key figures at the event, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, APC governors and their deputies, members of the National Assembly, Speakers of APC-controlled State Assemblies, former President Muhammadu Buhari, and past APC governors.

Dr. Kenneth noted that the summit offers a timely platform to review the APC’s performance, promote dialogue among stakeholders, and showcase the progress made under the Tinubu administration, particularly achievements under the Renewed Hope Agenda that may not have been widely acknowledged.

“As a forum, we believe this summit is happening at the right time. By May 29, it will be two years since President Tinubu assumed office. The summit provides an opportunity to highlight the administration’s gains that have often been overlooked or misrepresented by opposition voices,” Kenneth stated.

He encouraged delegates to attend with an open mind and actively participate in discussions aimed at strengthening the party and expanding its reach to more Nigerians.

The PVF also urged the summit to accommodate diverse interests and voices within the APC, including new entrants, to ensure broader inclusion and lasting cohesion within the party.

The group called on Nigerians to continue supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasising that the administration has laid a solid foundation for economic stability, improved infrastructure, and national well-being. According to the group, recent signs of recovery, such as a drop in inflation and falling commodity prices, are evidence of progress.

“We believe that this national summit is in the interest of Nigerians and the nation. In due time, Nigerians will totally ignore the noisy opposition parties and their figures, and embrace the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the statement stated.

JUST IN: Enugu LP Rep member, 1000 others defect to APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State have received the member representing Udi/Ezeagu federal constituency, in the House of Representatives, Hon. Sunday Umeha, to the party.

Umeha, who was elected into the National Assembly on the platform of Labour Party (LP), announced his defection to the ruling APC during a mini-rally at Ibagwa-Aka, in Igboeze South local government area, weekend.

At the event, a business mogul and financier of Labour Party in Igboeze South local government area, Chief Joshua Ogbonna popularly called “Father Father” led more than 1000 members of the party, including the local government structures of the party, into the APC.

Speaking on why he attended the APC rally, which was outside his own constituency of Udi/Ezeagu, Umeha said it was in solidarity with his friend, Chief Ogbonna, disclosing that another rally that would officially usher him into APC would still come up in matter of days in his local government area, Ezeagu.

The lawmaker however announced that he had already resigned from the Labour Party and registered with APC at his Ward, even as he cited the intractable division within the ranks of his former party (LP) at the national and state levels as one of the reasons for his dumping the party for APC.

Umeha, who is now the first APC member to occupy elective position in the state since its inception in 2014, said his decision to join the ruling party was also “because of the need to connect to the centre and bring our people closer because there are a lot of advantages in plugging to the center.”

He said that the APC has served the interest of Igbos better than the PDP at the federal level, citing the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, Enugu-Port-Harcourt Expressway and the 2nd Nigeria Bridge as some of the landmark projects the current ruling party has executed in Igbo land.

The Leader of APC in Enugu state and Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, represented by his governorship running mate during the 2023 general elections, Barr George Ogara, said he was elated by the influx of credible and grassroots persons into the APC in the state.

“It’s indeed time for us to come together to retrieve power from those who have been using it to oppress the people. What is happening here today, the sheer number of defectors has not happened elsewhere in the state before. I urge all of us to remain steadfast because all of us shall be the beneficiaries when victory is achieved,” he said.

Speaking while receiving the defectors, the Enugu State Chairman of APC, Barr Ugochukwu Agballah, said the party was getting primed to take over Enugu’s seat of power, the Lion Building, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2027.

Agballah stated that PDP’s dominance of governance of the state for 26 years has only brought tears, anguish and sorrow to the people with high taxations, land grabbing, and demolitions of people’s means of livelihood for the purpose of building motor parks, which ordinarily should be the responsibility of local governments.

He thanked a chieftain of the party from Nsukka local government area, Barr Peter Okonkwo for donating Enugu North Senatorial Zonal Campaign Office to the party and facilitating the collapse of LP structure in Igboeze South LGA.

“Peter Okonkwo is equipped for the redemption of Enugu state and we will not shy away from that task,” he said.

Agballah noted that the defection was unprecedented in the history of decampment in Enugu state since the 2023 general elections, where an entire LGA and wards executive members led by the LP local government Chairmanship candidate in the last LGA election are all declaring for APC.

“It is a total collapse of structure. Today I hand over to you the symbol of our party, our flag; I hand you the broom, which is an insignia of our party and with this broom we are going to sweep in good governance in Enugu state, with this broom we are going to sweep away the reactionary forces that have held our people hostage for 26 years. With this broom we are going to bring back democracy in Enugu state.

“I want to say it here and I want to say it loud and clear to all doubting Thomases, that APC Enugu state is poised to take over the government of Enugu come 2027.”

In his remarks on behalf of other defectors from Ibagwa-Aka local government area, Chief Joshua Ogbonna recounted efforts made by opponents to stop them from defecting to APC; including seizing the buses they hired to convey the people to the venue which made them to resort to using commercial motorcyclists.

“We are more than 1000 that defected to APC today. I’m telling you that work begins today in Igboeze South local government area; it will be ward to ward movement. I’m assuring you that Igboeze South will not come last,” he posited.

  • APC North West endorses Tinubu for 2027

APC North West endorses Tinubu for 2027

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the North West has endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in 2027.

The meeting attracted National Chairman of the Party,  Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; APC Governors including Uba Sani (Kaduna); Nasir Idris (Kebbi) and Umar Namadi( Jigsaw) as well  Speaker Tajudeen Abbas; Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau and Ministers from the zone and other stakeholders,

Others in attendance were Chairmen of APC chapters in the region; state and federal legislators as well as heads of Federal Agencies and senior political appointees.

The foundation for the endorsement of the President was laid when Jibrin asked the gathering comprising the who is who in the APC North West geopolitical zone ” Aso Rock” ? the crowd responded by saying” no vacancy.”

After the gathering responded, Senator Barau said: “So it is clear in 2027, we are going to have a landslide victory, inshallah. So let us continue on the way we are going. Let us continue to cooperate with one another, work with the president, work with everybody, cooperate amongst ourselves so that we have the desired victory.”

He said the defection of stalwarts of the opposition political parties to the APC was as a result of the performance of Tinubu in addressing the challenges bedeviling the country.

“This is not happening just for nothing. There are reasons for this. What are the reasons? Number one is the performance of our dear president. The president, of course, inherited a lot of challenges, bedeviling our country. But he has come up with programs and policies to surmount these challenges.

“Security challenges, economic challenges, name them. We’ve seen how he has dealt with our problem, our security problem—the security we’ve been facing in the North West. Several areas were not accessible before now. You could not go to some areas before now. But now you can go to some places, you can travel from Abuja to Kaduna. This was quite impossible before he came to power.

“Similarly, before this administration, you could not go to Birnin Gwari, but life has returned to the area. The people have returned to their farmlands

“Several areas that were not accessible are now accessible. We know we are not where we want to be. We are not there yet. We are not finally there yet. But it’s a work in progress. Mr President is working hard, day in and day out, to surmount this country’s insecurity problem, particularly in the North West. It is a work in progress. It is easy to have problems, but it’s not easy to solve the problems.

“And of course, that is not alone. That is not the only reason why we are having these influxes to our party. The performance of our governors. Our governors are doing well, working day in, day out,” he said.

He added: “The chairman, the national chairman of our party, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, is leading all the party leaders in the country to bring about these improvements we are witnessing in APC. We are all here as brothers and sisters.

“So let us continue to cooperate amongst ourselves, work amongst ourselves, do all that is humanly possible to bring about the needed development to our people so that our party can grow stronger and stronger.

“So that by 2027, we will not have any problem in making sure that we have the expected victory that we are beginning to see. Because as we speak, it looks as if you don’t have any other political party in the country, or even in the northwest. So it is always said.”

Sani however invited the Speaker and the Deputy Senate President to move for the vote of confidence and endorsement of the President, which was seconded by Governor Umar Idris of Kebbi State and followed by voice vote affirming the endorsement.

APC forum backs Tinubu’s NCDC nominee, dismisses protesters as impostors

The North-Central All Progressives Congress (NC APC) Forum has declared its unwavering support for President Bola Tinubu over the nomination of Cyril Tsenyil as Managing Director (MD) of the North Central Development Commission (NCDC).

The Forum described the appointment as a step in the right direction and commended the President for recognizing Tsenyil’s capacity to lead the commission and drive development across the region.

The Forum’s support followed the opposition from the Concerned Plateau Youth Forum, which urged the President to withdraw the nomination, claiming it does not reflect the collective interest of Plateau State.

The group said it will embark on protests in Abuja to demand the withdrawal of Tsenyil’s nomination as North Central Development Commission MD.

Recall that after signing the NCDC Establishment Bill into law on February 4, 2025, President Tinubu, on May 8, formally requested the Senate to confirm his nominees for the boards of the South-West, North-Central, and South-South development commissions.

For the NCDC, President Tinubu submitted 19 nominees to the Senate for confirmation, with Cosmos Akiyir nominated as Chairman and Cyril Tsenyil as Managing Director.

Reacting to the development, the APC Forum, in a statement by its Chairman, Saleh Zazzaga, on Thursday, dismissed the protests against Tsenyil’s nomination as the handiwork of faceless impostors sponsored by the opposition to sabotage the North Central Development Commission.

The Forum warned those behind the alleged plot led by Danladi Pam to desist, describing their actions as a smear campaign against President Tinubu and a betrayal of the North-Central region’s development goals.

“We make bold to say that these people are not Plateau residents nor indigenes of the North-Central region.

“No right-thinking person from the North Central will want to become an obstacle to the accelerated development that is certainly coming to the region through the North Central Development Commission, especially with the nomination of a tested and proven technocrat like Mr. Cyril Tsenyil as the Managing Director.

“As bona fide stakeholders of the North Central region, we distance ourselves from these faceless individuals.

“They and their sponsors are not our members, they are not stakeholders in the collective quest for the progress and development of the North Central region.

“We urge the well-meaning people of the region to ignore the attempts being made by these entities to cause confusion and sabotage the mandate of the North Central Development Commission,” the Forum stressed.

According to the Forum, Tsenyil’s nomination as MD of the NCDC is well deserved, citing his distinguished career as an accountant and his loyal service to the APC through various roles and committees.

“Mr. Cyril Tsenyil is a card-carrying member of the APC. He has worked for the success of the administration of President Bola Tinubu, and we have full confidence in his ability to actualize the mandate of the North-Central Development Commission.

“We know his capacity because many of our members have served with him in different committees and can attest to his competence.

“As stakeholders who agitated for the creation of the North Central Development Commission, we want to affirm that we are fully with Cyril Tsenyil and we are in support of his nomination by Mr. President.

“We call on the people of the North-Central to give him all the support he needs to succeed in this all-important assignment.

“This is a new Commission which came as an answered prayer for the North Central after an initial delay, and we call on the people of the region to pray and work for its success,” the statement added.

Commending Tinubu for nominating Tsenyil as MD of the Commission, the APC Forum declared that with Tsenyil driving the implementation of the mandate of the Commission, the North-Central is well positioned to actualize its pledge to deliver six million votes to Tinubu in the 2027 election.

Lagos community urges APC on inclusion in appointments, representation

Residents of Ijaiye Housing Estate in Lagos have decried the alleged marginalisation of its community in All Progressives Congress (APC) political activities in Ifako-Ijaiye local government.

A petition signed by some of the leaders of the community, explained that the development is beginning to cause members to suffer some level of discomfort and political reputation damage within the community from residents who are becoming disillusioned.

It said, “For a fact, residents of this community have consistently towed and supported the ‘progressive causes’, since its inception.

“It is a well known fact in Ifako-Ijaiye political circles that majority of its Ijaiye Housing Estate Community residents have always overwhelmingly voted and supported the electoral aspirations of our great party (APC) and its precursors with progressive ideals in the past years. i.e, Alliance For Democracy (A.D), Action Congress (A.C), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

“At the last General Elections of 2023, our party the APC had a good showing in all of the 5 polling booths within the estate.

“This is a consistent feat that has been achieved through the untiring efforts of committed and dedicated leaders and members of the progressive family, who leave no stone unturned to mobilize residents in order to ensure victory for the party each time, there is an election circle.

“Our specific grievances are as follows; a) A continuous and deliberate lack of opportunities for key electoral representation (Councillorship position) and political appointments (Special Advisers, Senior Special Assistants, Special Assistants, etc) within the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Council structure.

“b) An abysmally poor employment and empowerment opportunities for our teeming youths and women at the State and Local Government levels.

“c) The absence of infrastructural projects for developmental and/or urban renewal purposes within our community. In the light of the aforementioned, this negative impact of the insensitivity of the party’s leadership to our aspirations and desires through a continued marginalization undermines the principles of inclusivity and fairness, which our party preaches.

“This negative trend if allowed to persist will threaten the party’s strength, unity of purpose, mobilization efforts and its effectiveness to deliver on future electoral victories within the community.

“At this crucial moment, we collectively and respectfully urge you and the entire leadership to take steps to immediately address these grievances as we approach the forthcoming Local Government elections, so as to ensure that members of the party and the community in Ijaiye Housing Estate have an equal opportunity as we continue to contribute to the party’s growth and future electoral successes by ensuring a review of the party’s zoning processes for elective and appointive positions at the Local Government Council level.

“As loyal members of the All Progressive Congress in Ijaiye Housing Estate. We believe it is pertinent to bring this issue of political and infrastructural marginalization to your attention in order to address these ugly development and foster a sense of hope and purpose that will promote a positive and tangible change in the scheme of things.”
