‘APC should intervene in Lagos council post-primary crisis’

All Progressives Congress (APC) women yesterday stormed the Lagos State House in Marina to  protest the outcome of the recent local government primaries in Agbado-Oke-Odo Local Council Development Areas (LCDA).

Urging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to wade into the controversy, they called for the cancellation of the shadow poll.

The protesters submitted petitions to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, urging him to intervene by forwarding their complaints to President Tinubu.

Their main grievance was the alleged imposition of Abiodun Ejigbadero, presented officially as Ishola Jimoh, as the APC flag bearer for the proposed chairmanship poll billed for July 12.

The protest was led by top female APC officials in the council, including Mrs. Funmilayo Odelabi, the Local Government Area Vice Chairperson, and Mrs. Mary Ishola, the Woman Leader.

The petition, also addressed directly to President Tinubu and dated May 22, accused party officials of conducting a secretive and unfair primary election on May 10.

According to the women, the primary was held at the State Party Secretariat in a highly suspicious manner. Delegates, aspirants, and their agents were reportedly denied access to the venue, and no transparent voting process took place. Despite not being recognized as a member of the APC in the LCDA, Ejigbadero was declared the winner.

The petitioners expressed strong opposition to the outcome, citing it as a total departure from the democratic values and openness that the APC, under President Tinubu’s leadership, is known for.

They further raised concerns about an alleged attempt to conceal the true identity of the candidate.

According to them, Ejigbadero, who has reportedly been associated with controversies in the past, was presented under the name Ishola Jimoh to avoid scrutiny by party leadership.

The petition read in part: “To hide his identity, he is now being paraded as Ishola Jimoh. This name change appears to be a deliberate tactic to mislead party stakeholders.”

The women also claimed that disclaimers and petitions had earlier been submitted to the office of the APC State Chairman by all executive members of Ward E (Agbelekale/Olota) and LGA Executive Committee members. These documents reportedly disavowed Ejigbadero’s membership in the APC within the LCDA.

“Given the party’s reputation for high standards, how does this individual represent our ideals of integrity and decency?” the petition questioned.

The women demanded an immediate cancellation of the primary election, which they described as “a shameful caricature of democracy.” They called for either the announcement of the actual results or the conduct of a new primary that would involve all stakeholders in a transparent manner.

Attached to the petition was a list of 14 accredited delegates who reportedly participated in the disputed 24-man delegate process, further casting doubt on the credibility of the outcome.

Reaffirming their loyalty to President Tinubu, the women said, “We believe you are the only one who can prevent this injustice. We have served the party faithfully and deserve fairness.”

They also emphasized the APC’s strong electoral history in Agbado/Oke-Odo LCDA, warning that the current dispute could affect the party’s dominance if not urgently addressed.

“The APC has never lost an election in Agbado/Oke-Odo LCDA, and we do not intend to start now,” they concluded.

BREAKING: APC governors endorse Tinubu for 2027 presidential race

In a major show of party unity and political momentum, governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as their sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election.

The endorsement came on Thursday during the APC National Summit ongoing at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, where the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) made a collective declaration of support for the President’s re-election bid.

The motion was moved by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, and was seconded by Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State.

The move drew resounding applause from party faithful and key stakeholders present at the summit.

Speaking on behalf of the governors, Uzodimma reaffirmed their commitment to President Tinubu’s leadership and pledged to mobilise their states in support of his candidacy.

He described Tinubu’s ongoing reforms as bold and transformative, noting that they have laid the foundation for a more prosperous and inclusive Nigeria.

“We, the Progressive Governors, stand united in our resolve to support President Tinubu. We will work tirelessly to deliver our respective states for the APC in 2027”, Uzodimma declared.

The endorsement follows a similar vote of confidence recently passed by APC governors from the North-Central and the entire party in the Northwest, who commended Tinubu’s developmental achievements and efforts at fostering national cohesion.

  • APC National Secretary Basiru woos three Osun PDP senators after Tinubu endorsement

APC National Secretary Basiru woos three Osun PDP senators after Tinubu endorsement

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu second term bid is attracting more support from opposition party members.

The three senators from Osun State – Francis Fadahunsi (Osun East), Lere Oyewumi (Osun West) and Olubiyi Fadeyi (Osun Central) – all elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have declared support for President Tinubu.

The support for the president’s reelection also received a boost as Benue State APC National Assembly Caucus endorsed him for a second term.

The National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, enjoined the three Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators from Osun State to consider joining the APC after declaring support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election.

In the last one year, no fewer than 10 senators and 30 House of Representatives members had defected from the opposition to the ruling party and pledged to support the President for another term.

In a joint statement issued in Abuja under the Osun PDP Senators’ Caucus, the lawmakers said their decision followed a strategic meeting where they unanimously agreed that Tinubu’s leadership was the right path forward for Nigeria.

“This is more than an endorsement—it’s a bold declaration of confidence in President Tinubu’s vision and delivery,” the senators stated. “From infrastructure to food security, national stability to economic reform, his administration is already producing tangible results that cannot be ignored.”

They pointed to marked reductions in food prices, improvements in national security, and a growing sense of economic stability as signs of the President’s effectiveness. The lawmakers also emphasized that their constituencies are fully aligned with this decision, saying, “Osun stands firmly behind Tinubu.”

Basiru, an APC governorship aspirant in Osin State, commended the Osun senators for endorsing President Tinubu for 2027 poll, describing them as ‘Omoluabi (men of good character).

However, he said in a statement by his campaign manager, Professor Remi Ajala, that the decision of the trio to support Tinubu’s re-election would only be meaningful if they join  the APC.

Basiru said: “The public recognition by the PDP senators of President Tinubu’s achievements especially in the areas of infrastructure development, economic reforms, food security, and national security is another testimonial that Nigeria is working under our leader and moving towards the clear path of development and it shows a clear act of truthfulness and statesmanship.

“This shows his leadership and style of governance are bringing positive results to Nigerians, including the electorates and constituents in their different senatorial districts in Osun State.

“We appreciate that these senators have acknowledged the Renewed Hope Agenda and how it is beginning to positively impact their constituencies. This kind of honest leadership deserves to be encouraged and applauded, especially in a time when Nigerians seek real progress.”

Basiru, who represented Osun Central in the Senate between 2019 and 2023, urged the three PDP senators to take their loyalty and support a step further by joining the ruling party.

He said it is is not enough to praise the President from a distance for self-serving purposes, adding that they should wholly align fully with the progressive family at the national and state levels to cement their endorsement.

Basiru added: “Full alliance and alignment with APC at the state level will show true commitment and allow Osun State and her citizens to fully benefit from the President’s bigger vision to integrate development across the length and breath of Nigeria.

“Pitching your tent with the APC will help bring the needed development to Osun APC led-state government when inaugurated in 2026, in key sectors such as infrastructure, education, agriculture, sustainable economy, healthcare.”

“It will also help end the underperformance and maladministration currently witnessed under the deceptive administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

“We call on the three Osun PDP senators to display courage and show real leadership by joining forces with progressive elements and emulating other National Assembly lawmakers who have already moved to the APC. This is the time to act for the good of Osun State and Nigeria at large.”

Why we endorsed Tinubu, by Benue APC Caucus

Benue APC National Assembly Caucus said it endorsed President Tinubu because of his impressive performance in the last two years.

The Caucus urged Governor Hyacinth Alia to collaborate with the Federal Government to halt rising insecurity in the state.

Two senators – Titus Zam (Benue Northwest)  and Emmanuel Udende (Benue Northeast)- led 10 House of Representatives members to the endorsement press briefing in Abuja, where they appealed to their colleagues to support the Tinubu administration.

The federal legislators are Dickson Tarkigir, David Ogewu, Sesoo Ikpagher, Terseer Ugbor, Hon. Asema Achado.

Others are  Philip Agbese, Sekav Iyoryom, Regina Akume, Blessing Onuh and Solomon Wombo.

Senator Zam, Chairman of the  Senate Committee on Rules and Business,  who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, said the endorsement was in appreciation of the laudable projects implemented by President Tinubu in Benue.

He said: “Our endorsement is rooted in a comprehensive assessment of President Tinubu’s transformative leadership, his unwavering commitment to national development, and the tangible achievements recorded under his administration since May 29, 2023.”

He said “under President Tinubu’s leadership, Benue State has witnessed unprecedented infrastructural development, significantly enhancing connectivity and economic activities.”

Zam said President Tinubu approved the construction of 465-kilometer Calabar-Ebonyi-Benue-Nasarawa-Abuja Superhighway, thereby enhancing connectivity and economic activities across beneficiary states.

He also said the president approved the construction of the Makurdi-Aliade-Otukpo-Enugu Road, with a flyover at the Wurukum roundabout in Makurdi  to improve transportation efficiency.

Other projects highlighted include the 1.7 kilometers Buruku Bridge over Katsina-Ala River, approved at a cost of ₦83.8 billion; the dualisation of 9th Mile-Otukpo-Makurdi Road, aimed at reducing travel time and improving connectivity between Enugu and  Makurdi, Abuja, and northern Nigeria; and the rehabilitation of the Oju–Cross River federal road linking Benue to the Southsouth region.

Zam pointed out that  President Tinubu had contributed to regional development, healthcare and education in Benue State, adding that he also established the North Central Development Commission to address developmental challenges in the region

    He added:

“The Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO), has received increased federal attention under this administration, with improved funding, infrastructure upgrades, and academic programme expansion. These interventions are strengthening the institution’s capacity to train the next generation of health professionals from within and beyond Benue.

“The Federal University of Health Sciences Teaching Hospital, Otukpo has benefited from enhanced federal support, including the provision of modern medical equipment, increased personnel, and improved funding for specialist services. This has elevated the hospital’s capacity to serve as both a practical training ground for medical students and a referral centre for quality healthcare delivery in the region.

“The Federal Government has approved the establishment of the Infectious Disease Control Centre in Vandeikya to address rising cases of infectious diseases in the state.

“The establishment of the Federal College of Agricultural Technology in Opialu Ojapo underscores the federal government’s commitment to advancing agricultural education and research in the region.”

Zam also highlighted the achievements of the President in Housing, Agriculture, Economic Empowerment, Fiscal Support and Social Welfare Initiatives

These include the construction of 250 affordable housing units in Benue State under the Renewed Hope Housing Estates program and the approval of 1,000 housing units in the state as part of the Pulaku initiative.

Zam said:  “The allocation of ₦44 billion to Benue State, comprising ₦5 billion post-subsidy removal funds, ₦9 billion Infrastructure Fund, and ₦30 billion Subnational Intervention Fund”, saying, “the administration’s fiscal reforms have led to a doubling of government revenues, reaching over ₦9.1 trillion in the first half of 2024, thereby enhancing the federal government’s ability to support state-level initiatives.”

He urged Governor Alia to close ranks with the Federal Government, through intelligence gathering and neighborhood watch, and make the fight against insecurity a success.

Zam stressed: “On security, we commend the ongoing efforts of President Tinubu in deploying more resources and personnel to safeguard lives and property across Benue.

“However, we believe the fight against insecurity cannot be left to the Federal Government alone. We look forward to seeing more proactive collaboration and genuine intelligence gathering from the state government, as a critical step toward restoring peace and protecting our communities.

“As representatives of the people, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the nation’s security agencies in their efforts to restore peace and stability in Benue State.

“Within the full scope of our legislative powers, we will continue to advocate for and facilitate the necessary interventions to end the cycle of violence in our communities.

“Furthermore, we are determined to champion initiatives aimed at rebuilding affected areas and exploring avenues for compensation and support for our displaced farmers, whose resilience remains the backbone of our state’s economy.”

  • APC chieftain slams Atiku over alleged one-term deal with southeast

APC chieftain slams Atiku over alleged one-term deal with southeast

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Honourable Danjuma Suleiman, on Tuesday, lambasted former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over an alleged proposal to serve only one term if supported by the southeast in the 2027 presidential election.

Suleiman, who leads the North East chapter of the Disciples of Jagaban (DOJ), described Atiku’s reported plan to offer a vice-presidential slot to Labour Party’s Peter Obi in exchange for support as “self-serving, desperate, and a betrayal of Northern interests.”

In a statement issued in Abuja, Suleiman warned that the North must not be used as a “bargaining chip” for anyone’s ambition.

“This kind of desperation is dangerous,” he said. “You cannot trade the collective interest of the North to achieve your personal political goals. It’s deceitful to promise the Southeast a return of power after just four years, effectively sidelining the North again.”

Suleiman praised the APC Northern Forum for what he called “strategic patience and political wisdom” in supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, arguing that allowing Tinubu to complete a full eight-year presidency is the most equitable path before the North reclaims the presidency.

He also took a swipe at Northern elder statesman, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, accusing him of pushing a personal agenda masked as Northern advocacy.

“I find it alarming that anyone would suggest the North should settle for a one-term presidency only to hand power to Peter Obi for eight more years,” Suleiman added. “That is neither fair nor strategic.”

“This is a great insult to the North. It’s politically unjust and unacceptable for anyone to suggest that after Tinubu, the North should settle for just four years, only to hand power back to the South,” Suleiman said.

He also reminded Northerners of past political developments, pointing to how President Goodluck Jonathan, a Southerner, ruled for nearly a decade following the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua.

“We should not forget history. It was President Tinubu who played a vital role in returning power to the North through Buhari. Now, we must allow Tinubu to complete his eight years before power returns to the North, fully and rightfully.

“As far as Nigeria is concerned, the North will remain politically relevant as VP in Tinubu’s administration and thereafter, the North will attain the Presidency in 2031 for eight years, as against Atiku’s agenda to mortgage northern interest, wherein the North will be VP for eight years after his one-term presidency. The overall and collective interest of the North is greater than an individual personal interest,” he said.

Suleiman also urged all Northern elites, political stakeholders, and youth groups to reject Atiku’s proposal and remain united in their support for President Tinubu to complete his second term.

“This generation of northerners is not desperate politicians but committed democrats. We must not allow anyone to commercialise or compromise our political future,” he said.

  • UTME: APC chieftain blames poor exam performance on infrastructure, curriculum, socioeconomic gaps

UTME: APC chieftain blames poor exam performance on infrastructure, curriculum, socioeconomic gaps

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ambassador Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has identified several key factors behind the poor performance of students in national examinations, including the recently concluded Universal Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

In a statement released through his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, Mumuni attributed the decline in students’ academic outcomes to inadequate infrastructure, outdated and inefficient curriculum frameworks, a shortage of trained educators, socioeconomic inequalities, and limited access to quality learning resources.

Reacting to the growing controversies surrounding the UTME results, the APC chieftain called on parents, educators, and government officials to take urgent and collective action to address the deep-rooted challenges plaguing Nigeria’s education system.

He stressed that the noticeable drop in exam scores raises serious concerns about the overall effectiveness of the current educational structure and demands immediate reforms.

“We stand at a pivotal moment in our educational landscape, as we confront the alarming revelation of our children’s poor performance in the recent Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination. This situation has escalated to what can no longer be viewed as a mere issue; it has become a state of emergency within our education sector. The implications of these results are far-reaching, affecting not only individual futures but the overall development and competitiveness of our nation.

“The significant decline in exam scores has raised critical questions about the effectiveness of our educational system. Factors contributing to this crisis are multifaceted: inadequate infrastructure, inefficient curriculum frameworks, lack of trained educators, socioeconomic disparities, and insufficient access to learning resources. Each of these elements exacerbates the struggle of our students, leaving them ill-prepared for examinations that determine their educational trajectories.

“Furthermore, the pressures of societal expectations and the evolving job market place increased stress on our children. They are expected to excel in an increasingly competitive environment, yet our education system seems to be failing to equip them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and confidence to thrive.

“In addressing this crisis, we urge all stakeholders to come together in a concerted effort to implement immediate and long-term solutions that are vital for restoring faith in our education system. Here are the key action points. We must review and update the national curriculum to ensure it reflects current realities and future foci. We must emphasise critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical applications of knowledge.

“A dedicated focus on the professional development of teachers is essential. We call for enhanced training programs that equip educators with modern teaching methodologies and ongoing support to foster a more engaging and effective learning environment.

“The government must prioritise investment in educational infrastructure. Access to safe, well-equipped classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and technology is a fundamental right that our children deserve.

“Enhanced Learning Resources. We need to facilitate better access to learning materials, including textbooks, online resources, and tutoring programs. This includes providing free or subsidised study materials to underprivileged students.

“Parents must take an active role in their children’s education. Schools should foster stronger partnerships with families and communities to create supportive educational ecosystems, encouraging mentorship programs and community tutoring initiatives.

“Implement frequent assessments that provide students with constructive feedback on their progress. This will help identify gaps in knowledge early, allowing for timely intervention. Mental Health and Well-Being Support. Resources to support the mental health of students must be prioritised. Counsellors should be available in schools to help students cope with academic pressures and personal challenges.

“We urge the government to commit to transparency and accountability in educational governance. Policymakers must actively engage with stakeholders to monitor progress and make data-driven decisions that are responsive to the needs of students and educators. In conclusion, the future of our children hangs in the balance, and it is our collective responsibility to address these urgent issues with diligence and urgency. By taking decisive and well-coordinated steps”.

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State have thrown their weight behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for re-election in the 2027 general elections.

The endorsement was made during a strategic party meeting held at the country home of former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Elder Godsday Orubebe, in Ogboagbene community.

Elder Orubebe, who was unanimously adopted as the national leader of the Ijaw APC in Delta State, expressed joy over the unity within the party, saying it was the first time he would not be strategizing against opposition figures.

“Today is one of my happiest days,” he said. “In the past, during election periods, I would be calculating how to outsmart the opposition. But now, we are all in one party—no old or new members in APC. We must all be loyal to the structure led by the President, the Governor, and the Council Chairman.”

He noted that the coming together of political leaders from various parties to support a common cause signals progress and unity.

“Having looked around, the calibers of people we have as leaders in Burutu Local Government , most local government don’t have them but somehow these people are always fighting, blackmailing one another and interested in sycophancy.

“But I want to beg all of you to stop that as from today now that we are together because of we are united, there is nothing we cannot achieve from the government.

“At the state level, I will never fight to get any position because has made it possible for not not to look for anything at the state level but I have had discussions with the state government and outlined the need of the Ijaw people to the governor and before he leaves office in 2031, we will achieve them.”

Highlight of the strategic meeting that was attended by all members of the 11 wards of the APC in Burutu, was the adoption of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori 2027 re-election in a motion that was raised by BB.O Ekpese, a lawyer and seconded by Mr Ignatius Kiakia.

    • Namadi receives defectors in Jigawa

The lawmaker representing Udi/Ezeagu Federal Constituency of Enugu State in the House of Representatives, Sunday Umeha, has dumped the Labour Party (LP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Umeha announced his defection to the ruling APC at the weekend during a mini-rally at Ibagwa-Aka in Igboeze South Local Government Area.

At the event, a business mogul and financier of LP in the local government area, Chief Joshua Ogbonna (aka Father Father), led more than 1,000 members of the party, including the local government structures of the party, into the APC. Umeha said his defection was in solidarity with his friend, Ogbonna.

The lawmaker announced that another rally that would officially usher him into the APC would hold in a few days in Ezeagu.

He also announced his resignation from LP and registration with APC at his ward.

According to him, the intractable division within the LP at the national and state levels was among the reasons he dumped the party for APC.

Umeha is the first APC member to occupy elective position in the state since 2014.

The lawmaker said his decision to join the ruling party was also “because of the need to connect to the centre and bring our people closer because there are a lot of advantages in plugging to the centre”.

He said the APC has served the interest of the Igbo nation better than the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at the federal level.

Umeha cited the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway, and the Second Nigeria Bridge as some of the landmark projects the APC administration has executed in Igbo land.

APC Leader in Enugu State and Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, who was represented by his governorship running mate during the 2023 general election, George Ogara, said he was elated by the influx of credible and grassroots persons into the ruling party in the state.

Receiving the defectors, Enugu State APC Chairman  Ugochukwu Agballah said the party was getting primed to take over the state’s seat of power, the Lion Building, from the PDP in 2027.

Also, the Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi at the weekend received over 3,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) into the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor said the senator representing Jigawa South West, the House of Representatives and the House of Assembly members representing Birnin Kudu/Buji, Dutse/Kiyawa and Birnin Kudu federal and state constituencies should start packing their baggage ahead of the 2027 general election.

He said the PDP and NNPP federal and state lawmakers would lose their seats to the APC, going by the gale of defections into the ruling party in the areas.

Namadi spoke the Jigawa State government’s Citizens Engagement Programme (JSGCEP) tagged: “Gwamnati da Jamaa” for Dutse Municipal Local Government Area at the state spots complex in Dutse, the state capital.

He said: “The APC is getting more acceptance and becoming stronger in Jigawa Southwestern zone as a result of the confidence and satisfaction with our government’s human and infrastructural development projects spreading across all the parts of the seven local government areas under the zone.”

“With what happened here today, where over 3,400 of PDP members in Dutse decamped to APC and what we saw in Birnin Kudu and Buji local government areas, all in this senatorial district where we also received dozens of thousands of members of the opposition political parties into our great party, the APC, the senator in this zone, members of the House of Representatives for Birnin Kudu/Buji, Dutse/Kiyawa and Birnin Kudu House of Assembly constituencies to start counting their days in the Red, Green and Jigawa State House of Assembly chambers. The people in their constituencies would vote for APC in 2027, by the grace of God Almighty.

“Let me use this opportunity to deliver President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s message. He asked me to inform you that the ongoing multi-billion Greater Dutse water project would be nonstop until it is completed.

“He also asked me to assure you that the railway project from Kano, Dutse to Damagaram in Niger Republic has reached a significant percentage. You are seeing the quality and the speed of the work. It will soon be completed and inaugurated.

“The Federal Government has revoked the Kano to Shuwari federal road project and re-awarded it to another company which is already on the site working day and night. It will soon be completed.

“President Tinubu asked me to reassure the people of Dutse and Jigawa State that his government will continue to execute more and more projects to improve the social and economic lives of the people.”

Adepoyigi was kidnapped last week while going to his farm at Ifon.

The kidnappers had demanded a ransom of N100million but later reduced it to N5million.

The kidnappers, however, demanded another N30million ransom to release the three victims but only the two ransom bearers were released on Friday night.

  • How is Gombe APC preparing for 2027?

How is Gombe APC preparing for 2027?

    • By Luis Achi

Whether it’s the Presidency or governorship, the race for 2027 has undeniably kicked off—faster and louder than ever before. Political analysts, party loyalists, and even casual observers now agree that the 2027 general elections have already begun, long before the echoes of the 2023 results had faded.

This is a unique cycle where post-election silence was swiftly replaced by an aggressive scramble for relevance. Political alignments and realignments dominate the headlines, and as is always the case in our political space, rumours are clashing violently with facts at the crowded intersection of misinformation and public anxiety.

In this delicate and often chaotic maze of ambition and strategy, it is not difficult to see how fatal miscalculations can be made. Missteps that could cost political parties states that should, by all indicators, be safe. Gombe is one such state. It is a classic case study of how a ruling party can lose its grip—not necessarily because it failed in governance, but because it failed to read the room early enough and act decisively.

The 2023 elections in Gombe should serve as a cautionary tale for the APC. The party might have retained the governorship, but it lost out heavilly in other crucial battlegrounds. The PDP clinched two out of three senatorial seats—Gombe North and Gombe South. In the House of Representatives, they swept five out of six federal constituencies, leaving only Akko for the APC. Even in the State Assembly, the PDP made notable gains, securing four seats out of twenty-four—far from a majority, yes, but enough to show serious intent.

This performance has naturally emboldened the PDP. And why not? The numbers suggest that Gombe could be ripe for the taking if only they can get their house in order and present a more popular, unifying candidate than they did in 2023. Many observers believe that the APC’s victory at the governorship level was less a result of overwhelming popularity and more due to the internal weaknesses of the PDP.

Many believe that the PDPs candidate in the last outing simply didn’t inspire confidence and he came carrying a baggage that weighed him down, making it difficult even for his party’s faithfuls to rally behind him with conviction. He may have had name recognition, but that alone couldn’t bridge the trust gap.

Largely, the conviction and sterling performance of Governor Yahaya has earned him a support not only from his party but across the board – he presented a better alternative to pilot the State for another four years than his major challabgers, Jibrin Barde of the PDP whom he defeated in 2019 APC guber primary election and Khamis Ahmed Mailantarki whose Party, the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) seemed unrooted to unsit a sitting Governor.

Now that Inuwa Yahaya is going, the APC need a canditate that could have an overwhelming acceptability not only within his party but the entire State, especially by vibrant youths who consitute the driving force for any canditate emerging victorious.

So, imagine for a moment a reinvigorated PDP. One that avoids the mistakes of 2023 and throws its weight behind a candidate that checks all the right boxes. That alone could turn Gombe into a fully blue state by 2027. Which begs the question: what should the APC do to avoid being steamrolled? The answer is simple—start now! Begin the long, careful process of grooming and projecting a candidate who not only appeals to the APC base but also commands admiration and support across party lines.

Luckily for the APC, the prevailing political atmosphere in the State is making their seeming tedious job more simple – the recent echoes calling on one of the succesfull youths from the State, Engr. Aliyu Muhammad popularly known as Kombat to throw his hat in the ring is an indicator yo where the pendulum swing.

It’s without mincing words that popularty of a candidate is one of the yardstick aside his financial capability, Engr. Aliyu  present a better solution to the APC – the most pronounced name, in the minds of many Gombe residents, may already be Engr. Aliyu Muhammad, businessman and long-time party loyalist, Kombat has remained firmly grounded in the trenches with the APC. But it’s not just about loyalty. What sets him apart is his broad appeal, especially among young people who are increasingly tired of traditional politicians with little to offer. Kombat’s “Gombe First” ideology has struck a chord, and that resonance transcends party affiliations. He is regarded as someone who sees politics not just as a contest for power, but as a platform for real change.

It is often said that politics is local. In Gombe, Kombat has built goodwill across wards and communities. His philanthropic efforts—often initiated without any media noise—have touched lives in ways that many politicians can only dream of. And that’s what makes him different. His popularity is organic. It wasn’t engineered in an air-conditioned office by political strategists. It grew in the dusty streets of Gombe, in the hospitals he supported, in the schools he helped renovate, boreholes he sunked, and in the households that received support when no one else came calling.

What’s more interesting is that many of these efforts have been carried out in his name by ordinary citizens without his prompting or involvement. That alone speaks volumes. It means that people are already making up their minds for him. In a political era where many candidates have to beg for relevance, Kombat is being drafted by the people.

His close relationship and unalloyed support and loyalty to Governor Inuwa Yahaya is another asset. Those in the know understand just how pivotal Kombat was to the governor’s reelection bid. He may not have been in the spotlight, but his behind-the-scenes role was critical. It only makes sense that the party recognises this and builds on it. Not because he’s entitled to anything, but because he represents the smartest possible bet for continuity.

Of course, Kombat has not officially declared his interest in running. But politics is often about reading the signs, and the signs couldn’t be clearer. Ignoring this momentum would be a strategic blunder. The APC must not fall into the trap of assuming that party loyalty or years of service automatically translate into electoral value. They don’t. Electability is a separate matter altogether, and it is often driven by timing, perception, and momentum. Kombat, by all indications, ticks those boxes.

Governor Yahaya with his loudable projects, needs someone with similar ideology to succeed him and that person should not be someone with lots of bagages but a person who has made fortune for himself but only aspired to develop and expand his harison of impacting his endowment to the people of Gombe state. Kambat is doing much to complement the efforts of His Excellency.

And for President Tinubu and the national leadership of the APC, Gombe represents more than just one state—it is part of a larger battleground where perception is reality. With approval ratings for the president at uncomfortable lows, especially in the North-East, the party can’t afford to carry weak or divisive candidates into 2027. A candidate like Kombat not only strengthens the APC’s ticket in Gombe but also offers a fresh face that can energise the base and attract swing voters. He would serve as a strong regional ally to the President, helping to counterbalance opposition rhetorics and offering a more grounded connection to grassroots sentiments.

Ultimately, Gombe 2027 is not about ego, nor is it about repaying old political debts. It is about survival. It is about knowing when the tide is changing and learning how to ride the wave instead of getting drowned by it. It is about settling early, and smartly, for a candidate who is already the choice of many before the race officially begins.

To demostrate his loyalty to the Party and the governor, Engr. Aliyu passionately appealed to his teeming supporters to halt on politicking and weight support to Governor Yahaya to round up his tenure and execute his earmarked projects. Though, the tempo is still high, this singular act differentiate Kombat to desperate politicians whose ambition know no boundries.

For the people of Gombe, it is Kombat O’clock. And for the APC, the path is clear: embrace the inevitable or risk becoming a relic of past glory. The future is calling. The question is whether the party will answer wisely or miss its moment entirely.
