  • Ngige describes APGA govt as financial waste

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Chris Ngige, has described the Governor Peter Obi administration as financially reckless.

In a statement yesterday in Awka by his Media and Publicity Committee member, Mr. Tony Icheku, Ngige said the All Progressives Grand Alliance’s (APGA’s) call for him to resign from the Senate was the cry of a drowning man.

“The beauty of democracy will manifest on November 16 as I see Ndi Anambra casting away the yoke of Obi’s eight years of the locust by rejecting his godson, Willie Obiano, because Obi’s eight years are an ordeal of plunder and mismanagement of resources.”

Ngige alleged that the Federal Government paid Governor Obi N12.8 billion for federal roads, which he rehabilitated before he left office.

But he said the money was squandered, instead of being spent on other federal roads in the state.

“Despite a monthly budget of over N500 million security vote, Obi has been unable to secure life and property.

“For eight years, he has refused to conduct council election and ‘cornered’ the allocations due to the 21 councils.

“Anambra indigenes demand explanation how their money was spent, as there is nothing on ground to show any investment in the socio-economic infrastructure.”

  • ‘Umeh should apologise to Anambra people’

The media consultant to the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Clementina Olomu, has urged the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to apologise to Anambra people.

She said in a statement that APGA’s Chairman, Chief Victor Umeh, who accused APC’s candidate, Senator Chris Ngige, of masterminding the stampede at the Holy Ghost Adoration Centre, Uke, and the kidnapping in the state, did so in a bad faith.

Olomu said: “Umeh should apologise to Ngige, who has maintained the status of a good elder, despite the propaganda.”

She said the apology was necessary because the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha Diocese, Reverend Valerian Okeke, ruled out sabotage.

“Umeh also accused Ngige of kidnapping in the state, so he can say that the state is not safe. But if there is security, why are people not coming home?”

“The people are clamouring for a change. The people want a change that will return Anambra State to improved infrastructural development, good education, healthcare and rural transformation.”

Tinubu, Buhari to INEC: Re-strategise ahead of 2015 elections

Former Lagos State Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday urged the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to re-strategise ahead of the 2015 general elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that he made the appeal at Governor Adams Oshiomhole’s fifth year anniversary in office and launch of the All Progressive Congress (APC) party in Edo State.

“We are therefore reminding INEC that it has the responsibility to direct the people and correctly advise the people that it will guarantee a free, fair and credible election.

“We know that power is not easy to surrender. But we want it and we will get it in an honest manner because APC has come to stay,” he said.

He commended the people of the state for their foresight in voting for Oshiomhole adding, “your votes have not been misplaced by the amount of massive development being experienced in the state.

“Since you took that decision five years ago, Oshiomhole has never looked back in terms of infrastructure and economic development of Edo State.

“You have seen and witnessed the radical development. But let me say that this is not our final destination.

“Our destination is to take over the federal level to replicate what Oshiomhole and other APC governors are doing in their states.

“You have accepted APC and it is now your duty to begin to spread the good news around your neighbourhoods and communities.”

Also speaking at the forum, the former head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhar (rtd), who congratulated Oshiomhole on his achievements, said, “I am happy that the people can now see the difference.”

Buhari said that he was optimistic that Oshiomhole would continue with his good work of developing the state.

He said that an APC government at the centre would work to eradicate poverty and provide security to the nation.

“If you vote us into power, we are prepared to tackle cases of abduction and killings of people across the nation so that people can move freely in whatever part of this country,” he added.

  • APC for launch in Edo

All is now set for the launch of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State today. The event will coincide with the five years of Governor Adams Oshiomhole administration in power and one year into its second term.

The launch of the party in the state has dragged for long due to the disagreement between the governor and the Southsouth leader of the party, Chief Tom Ikimi.

Following the disagreement, a four-man committee was set up, comprising former governor Chief Odigie Oyegun and the immediate past secretary to the state government, Dr. Simon Imuekemen, to mediate, which they did and today the party is set for launch, months after its registration by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and launch in other APC states.

The state, local government and ward secretariats of the party are in a carnival mood. Nollywood actors and actress are expected to participate in carnivals in major streets of Benin City.

At the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and its environs, APC’s and Oshiomhole’s posters, listing his achievements in the past five years, have been pasted everywhere.

All the merger parties are also participating in the launch.

Eminent Nigerians yesterday gathered at the Adamasingba Stadium in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, to pray for the late former Governor Lam Adesina, who died a year ago.

The prayer session was organised by the state government.

Dignitaries at the event include Governors Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo) and Rauf Aregbesola (Osun); All Progressives Congress (APC) Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande; APC National Leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; former Oyo State Governor Omololu Olunloyo; Oyo State House of Assembly Speaker Alhaja Monsurat Sunmonu and Senator Ayo Adeseun.

Governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun) and Kayode Fayemi (Ekiti) were represented by Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa and Dr. Ganiyu Owolabi.

Also present were Gen. Adedayo Popoola; former Secretary to the State Government Chief Michael Koleosho; the Iyalode of Ibadanland, Mrs. Aminat Abiodun; former Deputy Governor Hazeem Gbolarunmi; Aare Abdulazeez Arisekola-Alao; Chief Iyiola Oladokun; Elder Wole Oyelese; Justice Adekola Nurudeen; Chief Lateef Oyelade and representative of the Olubadan, Chief Olufemi Olaifa.

Others are House of Representatives members Kamil Akinlabi and Biodun Awoleye; Chief Aminat Abiodun; Alhaja Sekinat Adekola; Dr. Busari Adebisi; APC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary Alhaji Lai Mohammed; Oyo APC Chairman Chief Akin Oke and the late Adesina’s supporters, known as the Abegi Group, among others.

Ajimobi described the late Adesina as his teacher, father and political leader.

He said the late Adesina taught him in school.

The governor urged APC factions to resolve their differences, saying it was the best way to honour the late Adesina.

He said: “Some people are calling themselves Lamists to the core; they do not even know that I am one of the core followers of the late Adesina. When I was vying for the governorship seat, Asiwaju Tinubu and other leaders of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) took me to him and he blessed me. We shall continue to honour the memory of the great Lam Adesina and tread his path.”

Aregbesola said the large turnout of people at the ceremony showed that the late Adesina was loved by many.

He urged the people to emulate the virtues of the late politician, who he said lived an exemplary life.

People also gathered at the late Adesina’s home, where the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Suara Haruna, led prayers for the repose of his soul. This was followed by the inauguration of the Ayo Lam Care Foundation.

The late Adesina’s first son, Ayo, said the foundation was to immortalise his father.

He said his father was a philanthropist and he (Ayo) was determined to build on his legacies.

Ayo said the foundation, which was established early this year, has made donations to many charity homes.

He urged eminent personalities to support the foundation in caring for the less privileged.

Former Governor Rashidi Ladoja described the late Adesina as a God-fearing man, who lived his life serving Allah.

He pledged to donate N100,000 monthly to the foundation for life.

Ladoja said: “Lam was a selfless man, who loved the masses. There is need to donate to this wonderful foundation to help the needy in honour of Lam’s memory.”

Former Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala described the late Adesina as “loving towards everyone”.

He pledged to send his donation to the foundation before Friday.

Chairman of the Odu’a Group Sharafadeen Ali; Senator Olufemi Lanlehin and Mr. Femi Babalola were also in attendance.

  • Tinubu to complete 24-year-old abandoned Law School hostel

Tinubu to complete 24-year-old abandoned Law School hostel

Former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has promised to complete an abandoned hostel on the Lagos campus of the Nigerian Law School.

The project was abandoned about 24 years ago.

The Deputy Director-General and Head of the campus, Mrs Toun Adebiyi, addressed reportes yesterday in Lagos on the politician’s gesture at the end of the 50th anniversary lecture of the Nigerian Law School.

She said the project, which was at 80 per cent completion when it was abandoned, would resolve the accommodation problems on the campus, when completed.

Tinubu, who was said to be attending the first year remembrance of the late Oyo State Governor Lam Adeshina, in Ibadan, was represented by the National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Muiz Banire.

Mrs Adebiyi noted that though she could not tell when exactly Tinubu’s intervention would start, she assured that it would be soon.

She said: “We said to him that we had an uncompleted project that had been there for 24 years and he said it’s not a problem. He assured that he would complete it for us.

“I was so excited that I couldn’t even ask him how soon he would start. The project was almost 80 per cent complete before it was abandoned.

“It was what we took to him (Tinubu) when we met him over the needs of the campus and he promised to help out.”

A former Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), urged stakeholders to invest in the Nigerian Law School as an enduring legacy of legal practitioners.

He said: “The project was initiated by Chief Richard Akinjide when he was the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) between 1980 and 1983. The hostel has not been completed. It is in the state of neglect.”

Olanipekun described the Nigerian Law School as “our big elephant, which must be raised shoulder-high”.

The guest lecturer, Dr. Fabian Ajogwu (SAN), advised the alumni of the school to emulate their Havard University’s counterpart in the United States.

He said Harvard alumni took care of the university’s $20 billion endowment fund.

The eminent lawyer suggested a tripartite funding of educational institutions to involve the students and their parents, the government and philanthropists as well as other well-meaning members of the society.

Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola (SAN) urged the stakeholders to assist with the needs of the campus.

  • Ngige gets kudos on health education

Ngige gets kudos on health education

Health workers, doctors and communities have hailed the All Progressives Congress’ (APC’s) governorship candidate in Saturday’s poll, Senator Chris Ngige, on his public health education series.

Ngige embarked on the free health programme to ameliorate the suffering of the people, who have complained about the deteriorating medical facilities in their communities.

The exercise provided free drugs and other medical facilities to 10 communities.

One of the beneficiaries, Achebe Ebele, a resident of Omor in Ayamelum Local Government Area, said the APC candidate was magnanimous. He urged him to build a General Hospital in the area.

Ebele said the residents had been suffering because of lack of basic health amenities, adding that they would be glad if they were provided with health facilities because without good health, productivity would be low.

Ngige’s media consultant, Clementina Olomu, said the APC standard-bearer would deliver on his 12-point agenda, which included making the state safe and healthy for people to contribute to its development.

She said: “Ngige will provide free medical service for expectant mothers and free medical care for children under 10. The health institution will be staffed with qualified doctors.”

Olomu added that the governorship candidate would ensure that primary and secondary education is free.

  • APC alleges fake policemen, corps members in Anambra

APC alleges fake policemen, corps members in Anambra

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has alleged that fake policemen, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and civil defence personnel have been brought into Anambra State.

APC said this seems to have confirmed the alarm raised about two weeks ago by the Deputy Inspector- General of Police, Operations, Mr. Lar, that some candidates were sewing police, NYSC and civil defence uniforms to unleash mayhem and disrupt Saturday’s election.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Awka, Director-General of the Senator Chris Ngige Campaign Organisation Chief George Muoghalu, alleged that “these fake policemen, corps and civil defence members are camped in certain locations.’’

The campaign organisation urged Anambra indigenes not to be afraid to vote and defend their votes. It also enjoined them to resist provocations and shun violence.

It said: “We advise the press and Nigerians to be witnesses to the evil plots by some of our opponents to rig the November 16 poll.

“We believe that if nothing is done about this, it has the potential of thwarting the wishes of Anambra people and creating a latitude for confusion and conflict.

“It’s sad to note that while Senator Ngige is criss-crossing the length and breadth of Anambra, sensitising and mobilising voters, some of his opponents are plotting how to get a pyrrhic victory through the backdoor.

“We wish to draw your attention to an intelligence report, which showed many of these evil plots.

“We are aware that the aim of this plot is to use the fake law enforcement agents to unleash mayhem in areas where Senator Ngige is very strong.

“Some of the areas targeted by these desperate politicians are Idemili North and South local governments where Ngige hails from, Ogbaru Local Government, Onitsha North and South, Nnewi North Local Government and other places.

“Besides the planned mayhem, part of the plot is to delay electoral materials to these areas.

“By depriving these areas of materials, they hope to frustrate the electorate not to vote.

“This evil plot is part of the plan by these desperate politicians to win the election and foist on the people a government not of their choice.

“It is also disheartening that while Lar made this startling discovery of candidates procuring fake uniforms for their thugs within and outside Anambra State, nothing appears to have been done by the Nigeria Police in terms of arrest, interrogation and prosecution.

“If not anything, police intelligence report shows that these nefarious activities are going on with greater impunity as if the perpetrators are above the law.

“The Senator Ngige Campaign Organisation urges the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to deal with this orchestrated plan to thwart the governorship poll by arresting the perpetrators, whom they have identified.

“We also enjoin the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to brace itself to counter the gerrymandering plotted by the same people and ensure that electoral materials leave for the locations as stipulated by the Electoral Act.

“Not doing so will create the impression that the commission has been compromised, as was the case in the last governorship in the state in 2010.

“We are equally aware that there are plans by the same desperadoes to force voters out of the polling booths before the announcement of results.

“INEC must not allow this to happen if the results at the polling booths will be credible and acceptable.”

“This campaign organisation also recognises the efforts of the Nigeria Police and those of INEC so far and wishes to express its confidence in the ability of the two bodies to deliver a free, fair and credible election on November 16. We urge them to rise above the situation.”

  • APC hails MASSOB for disowning APGA

APC hails MASSOB for disowning APGA

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has hailed the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) for disowning its purported endorsement of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State, Willy Obiano.

It gave the commendation yesterday in a statement through its Southeast Zonal Publicity Secretary, Osita Okechukwu.

Okechukwu said MASSOB has, by this noble act, separated the wheat from the chaff.

He praised MASSOB for exposing Governor Peter Obi and his “empty shell” called APGA by distancing itself from the desperados in the party.

Okechukwu said MASSOB had not only demonstrated that it was truly pan-Igbo, but had shown that what it (APGA) had in Anambra State today was Agulu Peoples Grand Alliance, and not All Progressives Grand Alliance, which the late Ezeigbo Gburugburu, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, promoted.

The statement reads: “Chief Ralph Uwazurike and his MASSOB leadership have done Ndigbo proud, for giving Governor Obi water with the bitter cup he gave others. Hence reminding him how he abandoned MASSOB in the hour of need.

“Was Governor Obi not the one who ordered shoot at sight against MASSOB in Onitsha in 2006?

“How on earth can a governor, who suddenly remembered to ‘spray’ money, even on the Adoration ground, be taken serious?

“APC could have been outraged if MASSOB has forgotten that till date, Governor Obi has neither followed up nor sued the police for the Esu River tragedy, where MASSOB members, allegedly shot by the police, were found floating.”

Okechukwu urged MASSOB to remain steadfast and impartial.
