  • Fayemi’ll break one-term jinx, says Awe

The Acting Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State, Chief Jide Awe, has said the state Governor Dr Kayode Fayemi will get a second term.

Chief Awe, who spoke at the launch of the Ekiti West Social Security Scheme in Aramoko- Ekiti, said the Governor Fayemi has achieved “what naturally qualifies him for a second term as Ekiti governor”.

Awe said: “ I see no reason a government whose approach to delivering democracy dividends to our people will not be allowed to continue; if it is a whammy that there is no governor that will rule Ekiti two times ‘we are ready to break it’.”

Lauding the initiative of the Caretaker Chairman of the local government, Pastor Ropo Famibode, the APC chief explained that the initiative would complement the efforts of Governor Fayemi.

In his welcome address, Pastor Famubode said, “The initiative is to complement the social security scheme of the state governor.”

He said the 150 people who benefited from the scheme, were selected from the wards in the local government without recourse to their social, religious, or political affiliation, but on the basis that they are above 65, are indigents whose social welfare needed attention and have not benefitted from the state social security scheme.

The caretaker chairman and former permanent secretary of ministry of labour, who reiterate Fayemi’s commitment to improving the lives of Ekiti people, pleaded for the continuous support of the people for his administration.

An octogenarian, Mrs Esther Adetunji, a beneficiary of the scheme, described the gesture as one that would, to a long extent, alleviate their sufferings by enabling them to meet some of their basic needs.

Other beneficiaries also pleaded their un alloyed loyalty and support to governor Fayemi’s administration.

The social scheme, which was kicked off by Awe, was witnessed by many dignitaries, including the Alara of Aramoko; Oba Adegoke Olu Adeyemi.

  • ‘APC is party to beat in 2015’

‘APC is party to beat in 2015’

All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain Senator Akin Odunsi (Ogun West) is the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force. He spoke with Assistant Editor LEKE SALAUDEEN on the national security, under-funding of the Air Force and APC’s prospects in 2015.

You have been a senator for two years. What are your achieve-ments?

It was my intention to tackle primary healthcare problems. By the time I concluded campaigns, I found that the problem of mass unemployment was a bigger challenge in my senatorial district. Consequently, I decided to review my programmes and I felt the youth unemployment should be brought to the front burner.

I classified the youth employment into two. I thought of helping to fix young men and women in government establishments. I also had in mind setting up the skill acquisition programme for the unemployed youth. I found out that, given the magnitude of graduate unemployment, it will not be easy fixing all of them in government offices. Consequently, I decided to look at skill acquisition programme.

For direct employment, I have assisted in placing 32 in Police, Air Force, State Security Service (SSS) and Aviation parastatals.

As regards skill acquisition, I have run two successful programmes. I sponsored 30 youths in a programme facilitated by the Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) run by the Central Bank of Nigeria. I gave out interest free loan of N3 million to five of them at N600,000 each to set up businesses for which they had written feasibility studies. The progress of the young entrepreneurs is being monitored by my office and EDC. They are today net employers of labour.

    What of the second programme?

The successfully completed second programme was done, in conjunction with National Directorate of Employment (NDE). This programme featured 120 youths drawn from 59 wards in my senatorial district. They were sent on three months training programme organised by the NDE and fully paid by me as a private initiative. The skills in which they were trained include fashion designing, hair dressing, mobile phone repairing, confectionary/interior decoration, photography and video coverage. I am happy all of them have graduated. I presented them with equipment necessary for the practice of their various vocations at the graduation ceremony held at Ilaro recently.

Apart from the 120 that graduated, 22 youths, who took part in the selection process, but were not qualified for the programme, were given N30,000 each to assist them in their various vocations.

The police prevented you fromcommissioning the Ijamido Hall, Ota, which was rehabilitated by you on August 24. What do you think was responsible for the police action?

Let me correct the impression that I single handedly rehabilitated the hall. The Ijamido Hall was a constituency project facilitated by me. Some people misconstrued the intention and wrote a petition to the police alleging imminent break down of law and order, if the event took place. The police, acting on an order from the above, sealed off the facility and the environment, based on spurious allegation that I claimed to have spent my money to do the project. My challenge is that people should say it in public and not in beer parlours. Let whoever thinks he is behind the petition come out and announce publicly that he stopped it.

Let it be known that I contributed to the town hall project like many other notable sons and daughters of the community and friends of the community as well. On this particular issue, I know the amount I spent after the contractor left the site.

Did you sponsor any project of your own?

Yes, I did. I have committed two million naira to Ilara Water Project and several bore hole projects across the senatorial district. During my first year entrepreneur programme, I spent over N20 million to buy motorcycles, refrigerator, deep freezers, farming tools, herbicides, sprayers and cutlasses to empower the people in my constituency. In addition, I gave out N30,000 each to 50 women in the senatorial district to assist them in their trades. There was also the education support programme for 24 brilliant, but indigent students and skill training for 120 youths in the senatorial district.

I have the fortune of working with the MDG to implement some of the constituency projects facilitated by me. These include Police Primary School, Osuke, which has been completed. Works are on-going on five others in Ado-Odo, Igbesa and Imule. Those of Idogo and Agborogbomo are yet to take off. Work will start on three processing mills tomorrow. Another entrepreneur programme for the youth will start in another week or two.

They also include the completion of rural electrification project abandoned eight years ago at Owode-Ketu-Ijama. It will be completed this year. Fifteen transformers were distributed between last year and this year. There are hand pump borehole projects in Ikoga Ile, Idimu village, Imota Asipa. Aparadija/Iroko, Igbo Odo, Koko Atan, Mero village, Oju Iroko, Sunwa village, Osi and Oruba Quartes, Ota.

Are you interested in seeking re-election in 2015?

Why not? It is save for me to say that, if I have not disappointed my people and I will not by the grace of God. I can still do much more for the senatorial district, if I have the chance to do it again.

As Senator of the Federal Republic, do you think new states can be created now, given the stringent constitutional requirements?

It is possible, if the applicants meet the constitutional requirements. I think the Senate Committee on Constitution Review is taking a look at the provisions that deal with creation of new states, with a view to amending them to make it easier for new states to be created.

The Awori people in your senatorial district want to join their kinsmen in Lagos State. What should have prompted this move?

The demand has historical perspective. Awori people have for a long time been part of Abeokuta Province, based on colonial administrative convenience. The Awori towns in Ogun State today could have been part of the Lagos Colony, but the colonial administrators merged them with Abeokuta Province because of proximity. For as long as I can remember, the agitation has persisted. Perhaps, the agitation has become more pronounced because of what appears to be the total neglect and marginalisation by successive administrations in Ogun State.

It is a matter that needs to be looked at critically. The last boundary review carried out by Chief Mbanefo under the late Gen. Sani Abacha regime recommended that Ota and other Awori towns in Ogun State should be merged with Lagos State. The recommendation was waiting for Abacha’s signature before he passed on.

Is the merger still possible under the civilian regime?

The issue is whether the government has the political will of allowing people of the same ethnic group and historical background to live together in a common area. The Aworis are gerrymandered. Those in Ogun State are scattered everywhere.

Do you think local government should be granted autonomy in a federal set up like Nigeria?

The present arrangement recognises the states as federating units. Therefore, there is no need to make the local government another unit. But financial autonomy for local government is desirable. What we are advocating is direct allocation of funds from the Federation Account to local governments, as against the present joint account with state governments. Some states butchered the funds meant for local councils such that what gets to them are used for paying salaries, leaving them with nothing to embark on capital projects. However, the state government should retain oversight function on local government.

The university lecturers have been on strike for over three months. What is the Senate doing towards the resolution of the crisis?

The Senate Committee on Education has been trying to bring the two sides together. As a parent, my appeal to the ASUU is to consider the plight of the students, accept whatever government may have offered and continue to negotiate. It is unfair to abandon lecture rooms and kick out the students. If their demands are in the interest of the students, they should take what the government has given and continue negotiation and reopen the universities. The Federal Government should always fulfil the agreements reached with university lecturers to avoid this kind of problem in future.

There were reported cases ofAir Force plane crashing. As the Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force, what measures have you taken to stop the plane dropping?

It happened long time ago. It was unfortunate. My committee cannot investigate accidents or the causes of accidents, but the committee can tell government during budget appraisal the needs of the Air Force. One thing is certain. The capital allocation to Air Force is inadequate. If we must prepare the Air Force in the state of combat readiness, the government must provide adequate budget for its operations. The issue of training of the officers is also very important.

  • APC will sanitise Nigeria, says Aliyu

APC will sanitise Nigeria, says Aliyu

Niger State Governor Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party needed to sanitise Nigeria’s politics.

He also said the struggle in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) being spearheaded by the Group of seven governors (G-7) is a revolution to cleanse the party and the national polity. Aliyu is the group’s leader.

He spoke yesterday when he hosted leaders of the APC led by its Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, who were in Minna to woo Aliyu to APC.

Aliyu said: “I said it that the coming together of the ACN, ANPP and CPC brought radicalism closer. The emergence of APC is a harbinger for a proper revolution. A revolution that will now sanitise the politics of Nigeria.”

He warned the ruling PDP to be “cautious, tread softly and be tolerant” with opposition parties, predicting that “the ruling party today may be in opposition tomorrow”.

The G7 leader said the struggle in the ruling party was their own contribution to santise the party.

His words: “What is happening in our party, PDP, is the revolution that is catching up with the country. Many see it as an internal struggle, but it is a move to see that the party is cleansed.”

Commending the forsight of the leaders of APC in coming together, Aliyu said the party’s emergence on the political landscape would bring the best out of the 2015 elections as Nigerians would have the opportunity to have two major parties to seek for their favour”.

Though he was not categorical about the request of the APC leaders, Aliyu said: “We have declared ceasefire because we are negotiating. After that, you can come with a blast. If we resolve, we will still be friends and if we don’t resolve, you will have as many of us as possible. As a group, we the G7 are people who keep to agreement.”

He then advised that the membership drive should not be limited to the G7 governors alone. “Don’t just visit the G7 governors alone, visit all governors and let us see who will not receive you. If other parties see this move as a good way, let them do it,” Aliyu told the APC chiefs.

Akande said they were in the state to solidarise with Aliyu in the face of persecution he along with the G7 governors were receiving from the ruling party and to ask him and the people of the state to join the APC.

APC National Leader Tinubu said the political barometer and radar had shown that the time for change in the country was ripe.

According to him, Nigeria needs “changes that take the welfare of the people as a cornerstone of its economic policies”. “Change that is focused on quality of life of our men and women. Changes that give priortity to economic priorities and take poverty off the land and put our youth to work”.

He expressed optimism that the party’s drive would yield positive results for the country.

On the delegation were General Muhammadu Buhari, former House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Bello Masari, Senate Minority Leader George Akume, former Minister of Foreign Affairs Tom Ikimi, former Minister of Works Hassan Lawal, former Edo State Governor Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, former Minister of Labour Alhaji Gwadabe and Interim National Publicity Secretary Lai Mohammed.

  • Amaechi: l’ll consult Jonathan, others before joining APC

Amaechi: l’ll consult Jonathan, others before joining APC

Rivers State Governor Mr. Rotimi Amaechi was in his element yesterday as he received the visiting All Progressive Congress (APC) leadership that came to woo him to join the party’s crusade for a better Nigeria.

Leading the crowd in singing gospel songs and dancing, Amaechi said he would decide where to go after wide consultations.

Amid cheers by the people, he said he would consult his arch political foe, President Goodluck Jonathan, among others, before deciding to join APC.

Addressing the crowd, which joined him in receiving the APC leaders in Government House, Port Harcourt, Amaechi said: “I will consult the president. I will. He is from our zone. I will consult all the consultables.”

He said after the consultations, he would come back to the people because they are important.

He said the day he decides to join APC, he would ask the president to come and address Rivers people at the Olympic- sized 40,000 capacity stadium he is building at the Greater Port Harcourt City.

Amaechi, who has been having a running battle with the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Mbu Joseph Mbu, urged the youths to be prepared to rise up against police impunity by using “peoples’ power”.

He said he was impressed with the way the youths dared the police at the Port Harcourt Airport junction when they were barred from going into the place to receive the visiting APC leaders.

Amaechi invited those who accused him of collecting N1.9trillion in federal allocation without nothing to show for it to a public debate, promising to show them the projects he has so far executed.

An APC leader, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, described Amaechi as “a bridge builder.”

Buhari praised Amaechi for the projects he has so far executed, especially in education, saying: “Education is the greatest thing a good leader can give to his people”.

He said 2015 would be a watershed because there would be a lot of work for people to do in this country then.

Another APC leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said they were in the state to urge the people to ask Amaechi to lead them to the party.

Tinubu also praised the leadership qualities of Amaechi as a former Speaker and leader of the Nigerian Conference of Speakers, describing him as a progressive.

The country, he said, could not develop on the altar of intimidation, harassment and lies, pointing out that Amaechi is focused and would not have been elected governor without the peoples’ support.

Amaechi, he said, was being persecuted because he was fighting for the assets, toils, oil lands, and revenue of Rivers, adding: “A man who stands to be cheated is not a man, he is a pig.”

Tinubu said the APC leaders were impressed with the way Amaechi had been transforming the state, especially in education, pointing out that they had been taken round to see some of the projects the governor has executed.

Amaechi, he said, had given Rivers children “the greatest weapon against poverty, education; given our women pre-natal and ante natal care at the rural level before the world; transforming and renewing our infrastructure in an aggressive and radical manner.

“We have seen Port Harcourt emerge as the bed of flowers, the Garden City again. Just a drive through, we have seen the emancipation of the people. We thank you for the support.”

APC Interim National Vice Chairman, Southsouth Chief Tom Ikimi said he had known Amaechi for 25 years as one who stands on his belief.

Ikimi said APC’s registration caused a stir at the national level because it offered the people an alternative platform to pursue their ambition, adding: “Since we now have an alternative platform, there is nothing they can do to you.”

APC Interim National Chairman Chief Bisi Akande said the party’s visit had debunked the notion that Amaechi has no followers, seeing the “mammoth crowd that came to receive us.”

Describing Amaechi as “a leader”, Akande said: “We will not go home without asking you to ask him to join APC because it is the party for the courageous.”

Lawmakers from the state, represented by Senator Magnus Abe, Hon Andrew Uchendu of the House of Representatives and Speaker of the House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Otelemaba Dan-Amachree urged Amaechi to begin talks with the APC leaders, promising to follow him any where he goes because they trust him.

The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) made up of the 23 local government chairmen in the state, represented by Hon. Oji Ngofa of Eleme Local Government Area, also assured Amaechi of their support.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy National Chairman, Dr Sam Sam Jaja, praised the people for coming out in large numbers to welcome the APC leaders.

  • Hold Obi responsible for Uke stampede, says APC

Hold Obi responsible for Uke stampede, says APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said Gov. Peter Obi of Anambra should be held responsible for the stampede at a vigil in Uke that left over 30 people dead, for turning a house of prayer into a house of politics

In a statement in Lagos by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said had Obi and the unpopular candidate he is seeking to impose on the people of the state, Willie Obiano, not gone to the praying ground to engage in wrongful politicking, the innocent souls who died at the vigil would be alive today.

It said while there is nothing wrong in a governor going to a vigil, such visit should not be impromptu in order for the organisers to make the necessary security arrangements, and it should also not be a licence to engage in political campaign.

The APC condemned the plan by Obi to set up a panel to investigate the stampede, considering that the governor himself is at the centre of the whole tragedy.

‘’Setting up a panel to investigate the cause of the stampede will amount to seeking to be a judge in your own case. The only cause of the stampede is the Governor’s ill-advised visit to the vigil. Information at our disposal has it that the stampede was triggered by the Governor’s overzealous security details who manhandled congregants as their principal was exiting the venue of the vigil. The security details were said to have been irked by the murmurs of disapproval that greeted the Governor’s attempt to campaign for his candidate, Mr. Obiano.

‘’It is therefore disingenuous for the Governor’s spin doctors to be shifting the blame on the supporters of our candidate, Senator Chris Ngige. The simple truth is that there would have been no stampede if Obi had not come to the vigil or, even if he had come, had not attempted to politicize the gathering that was meant strictly for prayers,’’ APC said.

The party said Obi should now take a cue from the disapproval that is trailing his desperate bid to impose a candidate on the state by ending all activities that can put the lives of Anambrarians at risk.

‘’We recall that an angry protest also greeted the attempt by the APGA campaign train, with Obiano in tow, to shut markets in Onitsha last month. The protests effectively short-circuited the APGA campaign. Had the Governor and his entourage learnt their lessons from the Onitsha debacle, they would not have needlessly endangered the lives of the same people whose votes they are desperately but undeservedly seeking,’’ it said.

APC said the candidacy of Obiano is not worth the blood and tears of the good people of Anambra, hence Obi should stop trying to impose an unpopular candidate on the people.

The party prayed that God will grant repose to the souls of the departed, while wishing all those injured a speedy recovery and the families of the victims the fortitude to bear their losses

  • APC: we’re ready to receive G-7 PDP governors

APC: we’re ready to receive G-7 PDP governors

Should they decide to dump their party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) will welcome into its fold the seven embattled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The APC’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, declared yesterday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

“They are welcome if that is their final decision. The development will strengthen our party towards 2015 election,” he said.

Mohammed affirmed the readiness of the party to effect a positive change in democratic system to uplift the country.

According to him, APC is built on the principles of democracy and popular participation.

The national publicity secretary maintained that the party would begin the registration of its members nationwide next month.

Mohammed told NAN that the party was intensifying efforts through robust logistics to ensure successful membership registration.

He added that the nationwide membership registration would strengthen the party and enable it to contest all future elections.

According to him, the party had resolved to maintain inclusive party machinery where all parties that merged into the APC, would fully participate in all its activities and membership registration due to begin next month.

He said he was optimistic that Nigeria would be better if everybody could truly contribute his quota.

Also yesterday, the APC told PDP chair Bamanga Tukur that only Nigerians can decide whether or not President Goodluck Jonathan will rule beyond 2015, saying his statement that the President will rule till 2019 is nothing but an empty boast aimed at ingratiating himself to the President.

In a statement in Abuja by Alhaji Mohammed, the party also asked the PDP Chairman to back up his statement, that it is time for youths to take over the reins of power, by first stepping down from his post to pave the way for the younger generation.

It reminded Tukur that one of his predecessors once boasted, in another euphoric moment, that the PDP will rule for 60 years, only for him to leave office in disgrace shortly thereafter.

“There is nothing on ground to justify Tukur’s empty boast beyond the

PDP’s rigging machine, which is again being oiled in readiness for 2015, going by the barefaced vote stealing and unbridled brigandage that the party exhibited in the recent bye election in Delta Central Senatorial District.

“The PDP which, has presided over the affairs of Nigeria for the past 14 years, has only succeeded in pushing more people into poverty, with 112 million people now living below the poverty line and millions of children out of school. No sector has been spared the effects of the cluelessness and visionlessness of the PDP and its leaders. What then is the empirical basis for the PDP to continue to rule.

“It is interesting that the chairman said the future belongs to the youths and that the era of Gerontocracy is gone. The last time we checked, a 78-year-old man does not exactly belong to the generation of youths, even if he continues to hold away at the top echelon of the ruling party. The sincerity of that statement is therefore in doubt.

“As for the PDP chairman’s admonition to the youth to start preparing to take over the mantle of leadership, the question to ask is whether or not the undergraduates in the nation’s public universities, who have been marooned at home for over four months now because the PDP-led Federal Government repudiated the agreement it signed with ASUU, are not part of the leaders of tomorrow?

“If Tukur believes they are, he should urgently prevail on the government sired by his party to meet its obligation to ASUU and end the strike by the university teachers. Then we will know that he is serious about his postulation. Until then, we say talk is cheap, because all that we can see now is that the PDP-led Federal Government is doing everything in its power to mortgage the future of tomorrow’s leaders,” it said.

  • Crisis hits Dialogue Panel over attack on Oshiomhole

Crisis hits Dialogue Panel over attack on Oshiomhole

-APC protests            -Committee begs governor    – Okurounmu: I don’t know if Nyiam is still member

IT is meant to collate the agenda for a national conference, which is expected to resolve Nigeria’s differences, but the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue is now in need of a peacemaker.

The national dialogue panel has been hit by a crisis over the conduct of its member, Col. Tony Nyiam (rtd), in Benin on Monday.

Nyiam led the heckling of Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole when the governor was making his presentation during the panel’s public sitting .

The panel member was restrained by his colleagues and others as he stood up and tried to launch himself at the governor, whose security team formed a ring round him.

Oshiomhole is opposed to the conference, which he says has no agenda, in addition to being unnecessary.

Nyiam’s action and those of people, who invaded the venue, ended the sitting – in a fiasco.

Members of the panel are divided over Nyiam’s continued membership.

To the chairman, Dr. Femi Okurounmu, Nyiam should cease to be a member.

But it was gathered that some other members of the panel want him to continue but be cautioned.

Those who argue for Nyiam’s retention believe that the panel has no authority to exclude any member since it was the President who inaugurated it.

“I’m not in a position to say whether he has resigned or not. I don’t know anything about that. I can’t say whether he is still a member of the committee. I will not comment,” Dr. Okurounmu said last night on the telephone.

He was asked to confirm the rumour that Nyiam had quit the job.

Nyiam was absent when the panel sat in Enugu yesterday.

But the panel has apologised to the governor on Nyiam’s conduct.

In a letter signed by Okurounmu, titled “Dialogue Committee condemns unruly behaviour”, it said: “The Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue wants to put it on record that we noted the sad incident at today’s (Monday’s) Interactive Session with Nigerians from the Southsouth held in Benin City, Edo State.

“The Committee wishes to state its unequivocal commitment and that of its members to the principles of democratic discourse. Although we take special exception to the unruly conduct of one of our members who joined the crowd in shouting down the Comrade Governor of Edo State, Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, while he was giving his remarks, the session continued and ended peacefully.”

“We want to emphasise that the Committee will listen to all shades of opinions in the areas of its mandates and will not henceforth condone the kind of unacceptable behaviour we witnessed in Benin City.

“The Committee wishes to express its sincere appreciation to the Government and people of Edo State for providing support to the Committee in its assignment in the state.”

The panel, which sat in Enugu yesterday, will round off its sitting in the Southeast in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, today.

The panel will be in Lagos on Friday, Okurounmu said yesterday. The Lagos leg ought to have been held tomorrow, according to the panel’s itinerary. No reason was given for the shift.

The panel will meet with Southwest leaders at the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) on Victoria Island, where a source said it was seeking “full security protection”.

This is to avoid what happened in Benin, it was learnt, since the government of Lagos State, along with other All Progressives Congress (APC) controlled states, is opposed to the conference.

The APC yesterday condemned the “sponsored disruption” of Oshiomhole’s presentation, saying “the despicable action has vindicated the party’s decision not to be part of the proposed conference”.

In a statement by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the Committee “must be ashamed of itself that one of its members led the show of shame”.

It demanded an unreserved apology from the Committee to Oshiomhole. Nyiam, said APC, must be publicly cautioned at the least or be excused from the committee.

Said the APC: “The truth is that in proposing the conference, the government has no sincerity of purpose, does not believe in engaging in any dialogue with anyone, but itself and has only used it to distract the attention of Nigerians from the total absence of governance and sense of direction by the Jonathan Administration.

“This is why we refused to participate in what is nothing but a sheer deceit. We have already been vindicated even before the start of the conference.”

The party said since the essence of democratic discourse is for all sides to be allowed to have their say, it was wrong to have shouted down anyone because his stand does not tally with that of the committee or the organisers of the meeting.

‘’Worse still is that a member of the committee led the thugs who so rudely and irresponsibly shouted down a governor. What a contradiction, that a member of a panel set up to help forge national discourse does not even believe in the plurality of opinions. Does anyone need any further evidence that the committee has already made up its mind on the direction their so-called assignment will take? How can you sincerely hope to midwive a dialogue with Nigerians when you cannot even oversee a dialogue in a town hall meeting?’’ it queried.

The APC expressed “shock” and “disgust” that the governor of a state” hosting a meeting of the advisory committee could be so primitively treated by hired thugs, led by no other than an out-of-control committee member.

‘’Even if they have no respect for the person of Governor Oshiomhole, couldn’t they have at least shown respect for the office he is occupying? If a person in the calibre of Oshiomhole, with his antecedents and prominent role in the national political discourse, cannot be allowed to air his opinion on any issue, what then will happen to ordinary citizens?’’ the party asked.

It praised Oshiomhole for his maturity and decency, which showed in his handling of the situation.

‘’By his comportment, from which his security and other aides apparently took a cue, Oshiomhole averted what could have been a violent confrontation and left no one in doubt that he is a true democrat. In the end, those who conspired to humiliate him have unwittingly played up his tolerance, his decency and his democratic credentials,’’ the party said.

The Edo State caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the House of Representatives also asked the committee to sack Nyiam.

The caucus also supported the argument that the timing of the proposed conference was wrong as preparation for the 2015 elections would not give room for the constitution of credible delegates to the talks.

The leader of the caucus, and the Minority Whip of the House, Samson Osagie, who was flanked by Razak Bello-Osagie, Abubabakr Momoh, Peter Akpatason and Jim Adun at a news briefing, said the attack on the governor was an attack and insult on the entire people of Edo State.

He said: “‘We watched with serious concern and miffed that at a meeting convened to listen to the views of Nigerians on the necessity or otherwise of a National Conference, a governor could be disallowed from airing his personal views simply because it was unpalatable to some members of the Advisory Committee, which is supposed to be an umpire and their uniformed tribal jingoist”.

“We agree, unequivocally with our governor that there have been 10 conferences which have yielded no positive result and that this present effort is calculated to further fritter away public resources that are supposed to be channeled on public spirited ventures and will yield no different result.

“What we need, in our view, is a leadership that can break all barriers to our national development through purposeful, focused, courageous and visionary policies and programmes of government that will address the intractable problems of insecurity, unemployment, infrastructural deficit and human capital development,” Osagie said.

Lagos agog as Tinubus become women leaders

All Lagos markets were shut yesterday in honour of a new leadership.

The traders simply moved to Iga Iduganran, palace of Oba Riliwanu Akiolu, who installed Mrs. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, daughter of All Progressives Congress (APC) leader Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, as the Iyaloja of Lagos.

The Eleko also installed Alhaja Fatima Bintu Tinubu, wife of the late police chief Kafaru Tinubu, as the Iyalode of Lagos.

The installation was held at the palace in Iga Iduganran, Lagos Island, amid tight security.

Mrs Tinubu-Ojo succeeded the former President-General, Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, who died on June 15.

As a mark of honour, all markets in the state were shut. Traders thronged the palace to felicitate with their new leader.

Clad in white lace, Mrs. Tinubu-Ojo, was blessed by Oba Akiolu, who urged her to carry out her functions patiently and always consult with other market leaders on issues affecting members.

He prayed that her reign would be successful.

The Alake of Egbaland, Oba Michael Adedotun Gbadebo, prayed to God to grant the Iyaloja and Iyalode long life and prosperity.

He said: “I pray Lagos witnessess more development during your reign.”

Senator Oluremi Tinubu thanked the monarch for bestowing the honours on her family.

She congratulated Oba Akiolu on his 70th birthday and 10 years on the throne.

The senator said: “I pray our new Iyaloja-General would always know it for better. The marketers will derive more joy during her reign, just as they did during the reign of her predecessor.”

She urged the traders to cooperate with her as they did with the late Alhaja Mogaji.

Mrs. Tinubu said: “The new Iyaloja-General is a humble person. She is very respectful and has a listening ear. The marketers will find her humane and sociable.”

Belgore: KWSIEC, PDP desperate to win council poll

•Party: victory expression of people’s confidence

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, Mohammed Dele Belgore (SAN), has accused the State Independent Electoral Commission (KWSIEC) and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of desperation to win last Saturday’s local government election.

Also, a former member of the House of Representatives, Bashir Bolarinwa, described the election as falling short of standard and impugning on the integrity of the people.

KWSIEC, on Sunday morning, declared the chairmanship and the councillorship candidates of the PDP the winners of the election.

Belgore, who was the governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the 2011 governorship election in the state, said: “We watched in amazement the desperation with which the Kwara State Government, the outlawed New PDP in Kwara and KWSIEC held the local government election, whose outcome was already known, even before the election was held.”

In a statement by his media aide, Rafiu Ajakaye, the APC chieftain added: “The gold prize of utter irresponsibility goes to the KWSIEC for displaying brazen disrespect for the law and decorum by proceeding to conduct an election, when court cases challenging the legality of the guidelines and timetable for the election are still pending.

“For the record, the guidelines used for the election are non-existent in law, because the law backing it had ceased to exist, following an amendment to it by the Kwara State House of Assembly. The Assembly hurriedly changed the 150-days notice of election, contained in the State Electoral Law, to 90 days, to comply with the constitution of Nigeria.

“Why did the KWSIEC proceed with the election, whose guidelines had been issued pursuant to a defective law? Why did KWSIEC not issue fresh guidelines, to comply with the new law? What was the rush, knowing it is violating the law and that the whole exercise amounts to a nullity?

“And where did KWSIEC see the over 800,000 votes it claimed were cast in the sham election that recorded some of the worst voter turnouts in history? For instance, about 18 of the 20 people who responded to a question by Ilorin.info on Twitter and facebook, on Saturday, said they did not vote because they felt it was a one-party affair and that there was no point wasting their precious time.

“The report of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the election also said enough on the abysmally low turnout of the poll. Funny enough, these over 800,000 votes are those credited to the New PDP candidates alone, because nothing was said of the votes scored by either the Labour Party (LP) or the SDP, the two parties that took part in the mockery of democracy. “The votes credited to the PDP far outweigh the entire votes cast in the 2011 governorship election involving the ACN, ACPN, CPC and PDP!

“This sham election is an act of desperation by the Kwara State government and they confirm to the world that irrespective of their posturing, they are not champions for the cause of the people or democracy. They are only serving their self-perpetrating agenda. As they lose ground everyday at home and at the national level, the local government poll clearly was a face-saving measure for them to remain relevant. “Such disrespect for the law and public morality can only earn them further ignominy!”

Bolarinwa noted that the “the absolute neglect and apathy of the electorate to that election speaks volume”.

The former lawmaker likened the poll to “a typical African setting of the old, where our people considered it the ‘leprous fingers’ of Saraki and co-travellers on a misadventure and therefore stayed away from it”.

He added: “It baffles the simple logic that the KWASIEC took us many steps backward in Kwara when it declared fictitious, scandalous and outrageous figures in an election where there was no serious contenders.”

But PDP’s spokesman Alhaji Mas’ud Adebimpe said the party’s victory was an expression of the people’s confidence in its leadership.

“The massive turnout of the electorate for the elections, despite the absence of strong opposition, was also confirmed by independent local and national observers who participated in the exercise.

“Having tried in vain to stop the free expression of the people’s will, Belgore has embarked on a vain attempt to discredit the elections,” Adebimpe added.
