Niger Speaker sparks controversy with compensation cash gifts to APC aspirants

Niger Speaker Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji has come under intense criticism after handing ₦7 million cash to his personal assistant, Ibrahim Awwal, who lost the bid for a councillorship seat in Mariga Local Government Area.

In a video making rounds across the State, the Speaker gave the bulk of the money in cash to Ibrahim, who knelt before him.

The Speaker, in the video, said that the total salary of a councillor for three years is N6.5m and the N7 million should be enough for the aspirant to start life without fighting over the councillorship seat.

This gesture sparked controversy with critics accusing the Speaker of setting a bad precedent and misusing funds.

Some questioned the source of the money, arguing that such cash gifts undermine transparency in governance.

It was also learn the Speaker compensated the 12 APC aspirants vying for the Mariga local government chairmanship with ₦500,000 each, saying that it was a reward to have voluntarily stepped down during the All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship consensus stakeholders meeting for Mariga Local Government.

The N500,000 compensation was said to be a token of appreciation for the aspirants’ understanding, cooperation and commitment to the party’s progress.

Some believe the move sets a dangerous precedent, rewarding political loyalty instead of competence.

“This sends the wrong message that politics is not about service but about personal gain,” a civil rights activist Halima Mohammed, said.

Others have questioned whether public funds were involved in the compensation.

“Where did this money come from? If it was personal, why was it done so publicly? If it was public money, then this is misappropriation,” a Minna resident Sadiq Bello, said.

The Media Consultant to the Speaker, Mr John Adams, told The Nation it was the poverty mentality in the country caused the negative reaction regarding the cash gift.

According to him, there is nothing wrong in the Speaker giving the aspirant who lost out and empower him.

He stated: “That is empowerment. Are they saying that the office of the Speaker of the Niger state House of Assembly do not have such amount to empower anyone? It is his personal money and not public funds.”

APC elders seek expulsion of Rep member over alleged anti-party activities

A committee of Concerned Elders for Peace under the All Progressives Congress (APC) North-West has called on the National Chairman of the party, Abdullahi Ganduje, to take disciplinary action against Hon. Aminu Sani Jaji, over alleged anti-party activities.

Jaji is a member of the Federal House of Representatives representing Kaura Namoda/Birnin Magaji constituency, Zamfara State.

The elders, in a statement by the Zonal Coordinator of the APC North West, Aliyu Mammani Kaura, accused Jaji of engaging in anti-party activities, including sponsoring media attacks on party leaders and promoting discord within the party.

But Jaji told The Nation the allegations were handiwork of mischief makers who are afraid of his political movement, the ‘Jajiya Movement’ in Zamfara State.

Jaji boasted that, his movement was gaining ground in Zamfara with more confidence.

He said: “I have seen it. It is not far from their usual mischief and fear of jajiya movements in Zamfara as the people have so much confidence in the movement.”

According to the elders, Jaji’s actions have brought political instability, dishonour and rancour to the party particularly in Zamfara State, citing his alleged romance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government in Zamfara State as well as his refusal to respect the party leaders, including Minister of State Defense Bello Matawalle and former Governor Abdul’aziz Yari.

They stated despite the party’s efforts to reconcile with Jaji, he has continued to engage in divisive behaviour, using social media to attack party leaders.

They warned that if Jaji’s actions are not checked, they could lead to the destruction of the party’s unity and cohesion in Zamfara State and the North West region.

“The continued display of pride and disregard for party leadership by Hon. Sani Jaji has severe consequences that could lead to indiscipline and artificial problems for the party’s progress in Zamfara state.

“Jaji’s negative approach towards some party chieftains in Zamfara state is alarming and worrisome and can destroy the unity, discipline, and political development of the party in the North West region.

“The recent personal attacks and utterances allegedly sponsored by Jaji’s political movement group on social media against former governors Sen. Abdul’aziz Yari and Hon. Bello Matawalle are disgusting and irresponsible.

“Also, the utterances of Jaji’s media aide, Mansur Aminu Khalifa, are equally irresponsible and exuberant, intended to malign, abuse, and insult party leaders who have sacrificed much to unite the party in Zamfara state.

“Despite knowing about Jaji’s recent meetings and political romance with the PDP-led government in Zamfara state, the APC in the state allowed him and his group to return to mainstream politics. However, they have continued to dissent on issues that bring disrepute to the party’s progress in the state.

“Although the party suspended Jaji and his aide last year due to their nefarious activities, including indiscipline and bad conduct, nothing has changed, and that makes it clear that Jaji’s behaviour is a result of his allegiance to external interests rather than the party’s well-being.

“As a political leader, Jaji should focus on serving his constituents and delivering services rather than sponsoring social media attacks against perceived political enemies.

“Zamfara APC is a family, and any action to destroy its hard-earned peace and unity should be resisted, hence, our call in the party’s leadership to act fast ahead of the 2027 elections,” the statement reads in part.

APC disowns timetable for nationwide congresses

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has disowned the purported timetable/schedule of activities for the party’s nationwide congresses.

APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka in  statement on Wednesday in Abuja described the timetable as fake.

He also said the party’s highest administrative organ has not taken decision to that effect.

The statement reads: “The attention of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been drawn to a purported timetable/schedule of activities in circulation for the Party’s nationwide congresses.

“The said timetable/schedule of activities is fake and did not emanate from the Party.

“The party has not issued any notice or  timetable/schedule of activities for congresses as it has yet to make any decision in that regard.

” A valid notice or schedule of activities for congresses will be communicated through the Party’s official information platforms in due course.”

The party urged members, officials, the media, and the general public to disregard the said timetable for nationwide congresses.

Angry youths pull down APC LG Secretariat over consensus candidate

The All Progressives Congress (APC) consensus exercise in Niger State in preparation for the local government election took another turn in Agwara local government area when angry youths destroyed the APC secretariat in the local government.

This, according to them, was because officials tried to allegedly impose incumbent chairman, Ilyasu Zakari as the consensus chairmanship candidate.

The youths claimed that all through his tenure, the local government had not felt the impact of Zakari were not ready for him to be given a second term in office.

Seeing the way the consensus exercise was going,, the youths got angry shouting ‘bana so’ which means ‘we do not agree’.

The youths went outside and pulled down the iron rod used to hold the outside shed bringing down the roof of the secretariat.

One of the youths, who refused to give his name, said the local government APC asked for it saying, “This is the implication of attempting to impose a consensus candidate on us.”

Several reports showed that several of the incumbent local government chairmen would not be returning as they failed to clinch the consensus tickets of the APC.

APC support group trains over 50 female entrepreneurs

In an effort to complement the “Renewed Hope Agenda”, a support group of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the National Progressives Hub (NPH), has trained over 50 women entrepreneurs running Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) to enhance their financial inclusion and business growth.

The beneficiaries selected from NPH and other APC support groups, participated in the training in Abuja.

Declaring open the one-day training, the National Coordinator of NPH, Hon. Bukie Okangbe, stated that the event was part of activities to celebrate the 2025 International Women’s Day.

“It is a business clinic. We brought in experts and trainers to conduct the training, including facilitators from the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).

” This initiative is designed for APC women and every party member to celebrate Women’s Month. We also want women to be aware of government policies,” she emphasised.

Kingsley Ndimele, a Business Consultant and Financial Economist, noted that while businesses in Nigeria are performing fairly well, there is significant room for improvement, particularly in addressing policy gaps, access to information, and knowledge acquisition.

“I am here to train small business owners on how to grow and scale up their enterprises. Although businesses in Nigeria are making progress, challenges persist due to policies, government intervention, and the business owners themselves.

“The average Nigerian entrepreneur has the potential to perform better if key issues such as policy framework, infrastructure, and knowledge gaps are addressed. Growing a business requires a certain level of knowledge capacity. If you lack that capacity, no matter how much funding you receive, you may not succeed,” he explained.

He also highlighted funding as a shared responsibility between the government and entrepreneurs.

“The Nigerian government has been supporting MSMEs through funding and capacity-building initiatives. However, the question remains: Are Nigerian entrepreneurs ready to maximize these opportunities? Do they meet the eligibility criteria?” he asked.

Director-General (DG) of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Mr. Charles Odii, represented by Peter Adeshina, stated that the training aimed to educate small business owners on structuring their enterprises to access available opportunities.

“SMEs are critical to economic prosperity and growth, and our role is to support them. A business clinic is like a medical clinic—when you visit, you receive treatment, feel revitalized, and can then expand and succeed.

“Our objective here is to provide guidance on structuring businesses for growth. Currently, finance in Nigeria is costly due to high interest rates. However, there are measures SMEs can take to secure affordable loans and grants.

“For instance, formalising a business—something as simple as registering it—can determine whether one can access opportunities or not. Business owners should also open dedicated business accounts to establish a credit history, making them more trustworthy to investors,” he advised.

He expressed optimism that the training would enhance SMEs’ operations.

“At the end of this event, we expect SMEs to function more effectively. With the information provided, they will be able to restructure their businesses, abandon ineffective practices, and embrace growth.

“Accessing SMEDAN opportunities requires registration with the agency. Fortunately, SMEDAN has state offices nationwide where business owners can seek support. We anticipate that, after this exercise, more entrepreneurs will be better positioned for success,” he added.

The Senior Special Adviser to the Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Adeshile Deji, encouraged the trainees to engage in continuous capacity-building programs from relevant agencies to enhance their skills and business operations.

  • No rift between Nwifuru, Umahi, says Ebonyi APC Chairman

No rift between Nwifuru, Umahi, says Ebonyi APC Chairman

The Chairman of the All Progressives Party (APC) in Ebonyi State, Stanley Okoro-Emegha, has debunked rumours of a rift between the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, and his predecessor and Minister of Works, David Umahi.

He stated this in an interview at the party’s head office in Abakaliki, capital of the state .

Emegha, who spoke ahead of the kick-off of the party’s sensitisation tour across the 13 local government areas, said Nwifuru and Umahi were enjoying a good working relationship.

He explained that the essence of the sensitisation tour was to galvanise the party and ascertain their challenge.

“The essence is not far-fetched. One is to reawaken the spirit of our members. It is also essential to pay a visit to the home sector of our party to find out their challenges and look at the area where we can assist them as a party. It is not good after the campaign and election, we have not visited them again,” he stated.

He further explained there was a need to replace party officials that have been elevated to other positions, even as he dismissed crises in local government areas.

“And again, if you have a child that is staying far away, it is important that you visit him from time to time. There are no issues in any local government area.

” We want to go and find out because, in some wards and LGAs, there are some officers who have been elevated to other positions like supervisory councillors, and management committee members. We also want to see how we can do a possible replacement.

“It is to the glory of God. The Governor must have viewed it from the angle that if they go to other states, there is a crisis in the party, but in Ebonyi State, there is no crisis.

“We know that managing human beings is very difficult. But it has been a team effort, not only me, and that might be why the governor endorsed me.

“How can there be a crisis between the governor and the minister of works? APC is a principled party, such that everybody knows where his work starts and ends. There is nothing like a problem between the two of them.

“The minister and the governor have a good working relationship. The governor and the minister are aware of this tour. They are the leaders of the party, and we are caretakers.”

Emegha said the party is working hard to bring on board more members of opposition parties so that they will join hands with Governor or Nwifuru to move the state forward.

“On a daily basis, we keep going to the opposition to join the party. Very soon, we are going to do a programme in Ezza South where all the people who worked against APC in eight local government areas will come back. So there is going to be a heavy defection at the grassroots, where all the structures will join APC.

“I have visited Julius Ama, Ochiri Edda in Lagos, and I know by Easter, he is going to give me a response. I am appealing to all Eboyians who are into politics to come and join us. It is a big family. They should come and contribute their ideas.

“Thank God that the governor is doing much, but as one man, he cannot do it alone. He needs ideas from other people,” he said

  • Omo-Agege: A pillar of constitutional rectitude in Delta APC

Omo-Agege: A pillar of constitutional rectitude in Delta APC

    • By Prince Efe Duku

All political systems experience conflicts and contestations for their control. By the rational choice theory and as dissected in Gareth Morgan’s seminal work, ‘Interests, Conflict, and Power: Organizations as Political Systems’, these conflicts are sometimes mild or fierce depending on the interests driving them.

Anyhow they come, truly democratic leaders resolve conflicts based on settled rules of law to protect the interests of the people as the ultimate source of political power. Promoting, protecting and enriching rules that preserve the interests of the grassroots is always populist. Herein lies the increasing grassroots appeal of the Deputy President of the 9th Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, CFR in the politics of Delta State.

Obarisi Omo-Agege as today’s issue in Delta’s political landscape stems partly from his first-class service as a legislator. He stands proudly tall as a most resourceful Deputy President of the Senate. Amongst others, midwifing a special legislative establishment framework for the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun; bringing to fruition his innovative vision of the Federal Polytechnic Orogun; and lobbying for the establishment of the University of Medical and Health Sciences, Kwale, put his legacy as a parliamentarian in a unique class.

On human capital development, the Obarisi as an intentional channel for the placement of a huge number of our highly qualified young people in strategic positions in the federal system is another level of patriotic and smart legislative representation. Hopefully, these young professionals will lead someday as champions in the military; petroleum industry; agricultural sector; public regulators and other critically important areas.

Given his sterling record of public governance achievements, there is overwhelming belief that the future beckons on the Obarisi for more. The grassroots specially appreciate him as a visionary with an incisive understanding of the rules-based dynamics of party politics and a trusted chief protector of their stakes.

Like many leaders in the Delta State All Progressives Congress (APC), the Obarisi believes that political interests are best protected by complying with constitutional rules, not arbitrary and extra-constitutional whims and caprices of a few. This thinking is overwhelmingly embraced by the party’s grassroots, thus confirming that the party’s fundamentals are healthy. This itself portends a seismic shift in the political landscape of the state, as shown by the Obarisi’s recent hugely successful engagements with large grassroots crowds of the party across Delta’s 25 local government areas.

Although recent strategic moves by committed grassroot leaders of the Delta APC are rightly revving up its capacity to build on its 2023 gains, reactionary forces serving external interests have been severely jolted, leading to feverish attempts to mainstream fringe disruptions into the functioning of the party. This must fail. While individuals may choose to embrace ‘aluta continua’ tendencies, the sanctity and due functioning of the constitutional architecture of the party must be held sacrosanct and unshakable. Those labouring to use extra- or unconstitutional tactics to control the party to satisfy external interest are already being frustrated by this reality, resulting in daily internal tantrums of hate and insults. These are immature answers to principled rejection of creepy lawlessness and cannot confer respectability. They do not substitute for constitutionality. Let everyone, big or small, simply respect the constitution. No need for any gang up, especially as experience has shown its futility. Going against leaders who preach respect for constitutionality is futile.

Further, Omo-Agege believes that genuine interest in the growth of one’s party should reflect in constructive management of electoral outcome – biter or sweet. Knowing that victory sometimes comes from only marathons, perseverance and restraint are required to stay the course with the party in turbulent times instead of capriciously casting it into the wind where temporary aspirational inflections or setbacks occur. Staying the course strengthens democracy, as it helps to build a culture of resilience and broad respect for electoral outcomes. This is a key lesson from the steady rise of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s to the apex of power as the nation’s Commander-in-Chief despite diverse political setbacks and turbulence. It explains the Obarisi’s exemplary unflinching commitment to the organic development of the Delta APC. For discerning minds, this itself is the source of today’s growing confidence that the party indeed has a date with destiny in the governance of Delta.

Pristinely brilliant, Omo-Agege’s commitment to sound principles resonates with many. He is fearlessly honest; fiercely protective of interests in his care; open to plurality and contestation of ideas; listens to diverse voices, especially critics; manages issues objectively with extraordinary wisdom; and makes sensible sacrifices and compromises for the collective good. For him, sustainable political leadership is earned by demonstrating consistent capacity to influence people, develop the party from the grassroots, and positively impact society. So, to him, to be trusted, political leaders should be connected to the grassroots. Artificial conclave leadership arrangements not grounded in the party’s grassroots or constitution are unsustainable.

Obarisi Omo-Agege’s capacity to stand firm against those who mistake pragmatic concessions for weakness is well-known, yet Job’s patience guides him. So, he would typically counsel that, “No matter how complex the issues may be, fighting within our party without restraint is unwise.” Knowing human frailties, his goal is winning with dependable allies, including reformed opponents. But the minimum for him is adherence to constitutional rules. No matter how fanciful, ideas violating the party’s constitution are unhelpful. Backyards tactics never work well. This position is right and of a populist flair. There is no need to fight him for this. Fighting people who want respect for rules is never right.

At the heart of Nyesome Wike’s popular ‘Enye Ndi Eba, Enye Ndi Eba’ musical joke lies an important message of mutual respect. Nothing guarantees mutual respect in a party better than full commitment to respecting its constitution. Any conspiracy to usurp the rights, privileges and powers of the grassroots must be stopped by principled leaders who value the grassroots. This sums up the populist stance of the Most Distinguished Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, CFR in the Delta APC, and it is overwhelmingly supported by the party’s grassroots leaders and members.

  • Wike working for Nigerians, not APC –PDP chieftain

Wike working for Nigerians, not APC –PDP chieftain

National Vice-Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Dan Orbih, says the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, is working for Nigerians and not for All Progressives Congress (APC).

Orbih in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Abuja on Saturday said having sought permission through the relevant organs of the party, PDP permitted Wike to serve in the President Bola Tinubu administration.

He said that in view of this, there should not be any issue with Wike working with the APC-led Federal Government.

“And I can tell you there is no record that the current acting national chairman and the members of the national working committee, or any of the organ wrote him in reply to his letter that he should not participate in this government.

“He wrote to the South-South Zonal executive. We had a meeting in Port Harcourt and unanimously we said it was a call to national service, and we gave him our nod.

“He wrote to the state chapter of his party and the response was positive; that he should take the appointment as a national call for service.

“He wrote to his ward and Local Government chapters of the party. There is no organ of the party that came out to say no, don’t accept this appointment.

“He wrote to the Governors Forum and I can tell you, that at the end of the first meeting held by the forum, a delegation of that body went to congratulate him in Abuja,” he said.

He noted that political parties must be careful how they treat their members.

“Now I have told you that his participation in this government is not an issue, except for those who are mischievous.

“When he was given an invitation to serve in this government, he wrote to every critical organ of the party, informing them that Mr President has invited him to be part of his government.

“I am also aware, that not too long ago, the members of the Board of Trustees met him in his official residence, and throughout that meeting, none of them raised this issue.”

“So, Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, is not working for APC; he is working for the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” he said.

The PDP National Vice-Chairman also said that his relationship with the FCT minister and his friends in other political parties could not be defined by his politics.

“Let me make it abundantly clear here that my membership of PDP cannot determine those who are my friends and those who should be my enemies.

“If at my age, I now belong to a political party and the party tells me, this man cannot be your friend, then it is wrong.

“I have friends across board. I have friends in Labour Party, APC, and in many other parties, but that doesn’t affect my membership and commitment to the PDP.

“I want to say it very clearly, PDP cannot determine my friendship with Nyesom Wike, a very dependable, hard-working friend of mine, he added. (NAN)

  • 2026: APC faces uphill task dislodging PDP in Osun

2026: APC faces uphill task dislodging PDP in Osun

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is confronted with some challenges ahead of next year’s off-cycle governorship election in Osun State, particularly the internal crisis within its fold. To boost its chances of winning, the party must choose a candidate that would resonate with the electorate, writes Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI

Leaders of the Osun State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) are facing a race against time to put the party in order ahead of next year’s off-cycle governorship election. Since it was dislodged from power two years ago, stakeholders have made frantic efforts to woo some key opposition figures and shore up the party’s popularity and influence.

The APC appears determined to unseat the occupant of the Bola Ige Governor’s House. However, the party faces a challenging environment as it prepares for the upcoming election. Addressing the challenges, which include internal divisions within the fold, improving its public perception and effectively engaging with the electorate, will be crucial for the party’s success.

The process of selecting candidates for the 2026 race is crucial. If the APC fails to choose a candidate that resonates with the electorate and can effectively address the people’s concerns, it may struggle to regain support. The party is yet to recover from the defeat it suffered in the last governorship election at the hands of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The recent political tension in the state, marked by clashes between the APC and the PDP is nothing but a dress rehearsal for next year’s election. Since the APC lost power to the opposition in 2022, its influence has waned because the party’s performance in that election has punctured the myth of its perceived strength and invisibility in the state and the Southwest geopolitical zone in general.

However, members of the APC are not leaving anything to chance to bring the party back to winning ways. In a bid to satisfy public sentiment, the party’s reinstated local government chairmen and their ex-counterpart from 2017 to 2022 appealed to its leadership to cede the 2026 governorship ticket to the Chief Executive Officer of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Bola Oyebamiji. The chairmen reached that consensus after their meeting on Monday in Osogbo, the state capital.

The former Chairman of Boluwaduro Council, Akeem Tokede, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, said a campaign group called Grassroots for AMBO has been launched to champion Oyebamiji’s aspiration. He said they still respect the immediate past governor and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola as the chapter’s preferred candidate “but if he chooses not to contest, the NIWA boss should be given the ticket”.

He added: “If the minister decided not to recontest, he should cede the ticket to Oyebamiji because he has the charisma to deliver victory for our party when we work for him. We believe that as local government chairmen, we are at the grassroots and can mobilise and campaign for the NIWA boss to emerge victorious in the election.”

While responding to questions from reporters, Tokede said the APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru is eminently qualified to contest. Nevertheless, he added that he would have to abide by the party’s decision if Oyetola anoints Oyebamiji.

Oyebamiji who hails from the Osun West Senatorial District served as the Commissioner for Finance under Aregbesola and Oyetola. He was initially anointed to succeed Aregbesola because of the agitation for a power shift to Osun West. His campaign had gained popularity throughout the state with his nickname, ‘Dodo Ikire’, on many people’s lips before Oyetola got the party’s ticket in 2018. He was a banker before he ventured into politics.

He was one of the eggheads under the administration of Oyetola who managed the state finance and was instrumental in repayment of about N100bn debt of Osun State within four years. He is believed to be generous as that made his popularity cut across party lines. However, he has never been on the ballot before and has never contested for any position before.

The recriminations that followed the 2022 defeat have further polarized the party. Today, the APC is experiencing internal divisions and conflicts among its members, which have weakened its cohesion and effectiveness. The internal division or conflict within the party has resulted in a lack of unified strategy or sense of oneness and belonging for some aggrieved members, making it difficult to carry everyone along.

The primary issue the Osun chapter grappled with before the last governorship election was the clamour for the party’s ticket to be zoned to the Osun West Senatorial District. Its inability or unwillingness to tackle it for equity and fairness divided it. As a result, a faction led by former Governor Rauf Aregbesola connived with the PDP, particularly in the Osun West Senatorial District, where members were determined to dislodge the former ruling party from power.

The clamour for a governor of Osun West extraction worked against Oyetola’s re-election bid because he is from Osun Central, while his opponent, Ademola Adeleke, now the governor, is from Osun West. Indications are that the APC has not learnt lessons from the last governorship election because it has yet to take a stand on zoning, which was its undoing in the 2022 election.

It appears in a quandary and has yet to take a position. However, the uncertainty over the APC’s position on zoning is one factor that is still unsettling some stakeholders, particularly those who have ambitions to contest. It is uncertain whether Oyetola would contest. There are insinuations in some quarters that he may not contest because of the national assignment that President Bola Tinubu has entrusted in his hands.

The decision of whether to zone the ticket for the election to a particular senatorial district or throw it open to all comers is causing ripples within the fold. While some groups within the Osun APC, like the Osun Progressives Independent Forum (OPIF), are urging its leadership to throw its governorship ticket open to all candidates, several others are calling for it to be zoned to Osun West if former Governor Oyetola decides not to run. The OPIF believes the APC would stand a better chance of winning next year’s election if it chooses a candidate based on merit, not sentiments. Speaking at a press conference recently, the coordinator of the group, Satiregun Olayiwola, said the party’s process of selecting its candidate should be all-inclusive, transparent, and without favour or pressure from any quarter.

Olayiwola’s words: “The future of APC and Osun State depends on selecting a candidate based on merit, not sentiments. Our party must evaluate potential candidates against clear criteria, including antecedents, experience, electoral viability, courage, and demographic appeal.

“Advocating for a particular zone, region, or senatorial district should be discarded to avoid repeating what befell our party in 2018/2022. This division resulted in some loyalists leaving the party, leading to a rerun in an election we could have easily won. The consequences of this were felt in the 2022 governorship election.

“What APC needed to win in 2026 is a candidate with proven track records in leadership, vast experience in governance, and the ability to connect with a wide array of voter groups. The will to bell the cat on critical Osun issues and the vision to lead the state toward sustainable development are also paramount. This process should be all-inclusive, transparent, and without favour or pressure from any quarter.

“Therefore, we are appealing to the leadership of our party, APC, to carefully consider the aspirants who possess the qualities of soundness, vibrancy, competence, and integrity. We need someone who is marketable and ready to serve, not anyone who will act as a pawn for a few individuals at the expense of the people of Osun.”

However, another group in the party, the Coalition of Osun APC Interest Groups (COAIG), vehemently kicked against the stand of the OPIF and insisted on zoning the ticket to Osun West. The group argued that zoning the ticket to Osun West would bring fresh perspectives and address the unique developmental challenges of the district. A statement by Its Director of Public Engagement and Operations, Iwolode Samuel, COAIG, acknowledged OPIF’s contributions to the party but rejected their perspective on zoning. Samuel added: “A leader emerging from Osun West could bring innovative solutions and align district-wide developmental goals with our broader state objectives.”

The coalition emphasized the need to focus on district representation rather than individual aspirations. It noted that this approach would allow multiple qualified candidates from Osun West to compete, fostering healthy internal democracy. The statement added: “By concentrating on a district rather than an individual, we ensure internal democracy where candidates are chosen based on their capabilities to lead and transform the state.”

COAIG further described zoning as a tool for equitable representation and to correct historical imbalances. “Zoning to Osun West is a bold step towards ensuring that democracy works for everyone, not just a select few. We invite dialogue and continued discussions on how zoning can be effectively implemented to serve the best interests of Osun as a whole. Together, we can prioritize unity and collective advancement over division.

“Our vision is to chart a course for sustained development that transcends political divides and captures the aspirations of every Osun citizen. The coalition’s stance on zoning the APC governorship ticket for the Osun 2026 election is not for personal interest. This position is rooted in fairness, equity, and balanced representation across Osun’s senatorial districts. It is different from the stance of those condemning the zoning to pursue the interest of an individual instead of the party’s interest.

“Our agitation doesn’t revolve around a personality like the agenda of our brothers in OPIF. We are projecting an aspiration that considers the benefit of the majority over the comfort of an individual.”

The APC’s influence in Osun State politics began to wane in 2017 when it lost the Osun West by-election to the then-PDP candidate, Ademola Adeleke. The seat became vacant following the death of the lawmaker who hitherto represented the constituency, Senator Isiaka Adeleke, the elder brother of Governor Adeleke. The PDP, which fielded the incumbent governor as its flag bearer for the Osun West senatorial race, defeated the APC by winning nine local government areas against the APC’s one.

The party’s unpopularity then was attributed to the anti-people policies of the APC government led by Aregbesola. Such policies include the half salary syndrome, single uniform, school reclassification, and the state’s high indebtedness. People were determined to protest against the party with their votes during any election. This protest vote resulted in APC nearly losing the 2018 governorship election to Adeleke.

Though Oyetola corrected most of the anti-people policies when he emerged as governor, following Aregbesola’s exit, he could not convince Osun residents that the party meant well because his government equally faced different challenges, ranging from #EndSAR protest and COVID-19 to zero allocation, among others.

To boost its chances of winning the forthcoming election, the APC must have a good campaign strategy, which will be critical, in engaging with the electorate, addressing their concerns, and presenting a clear vision for the future.

This is particularly true since the PDP appears united in its resolve to back Governor Adeleke for a second term. The lawmaker representing Osun East, Senatorial District at the National Assembly, Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi, and his Osun West and Osun Central counterparts, Olalere Oyewumi and Olubiyi Fadeyi respectively were all elected on the platform of the PDP. Observers say Fadahunsi and other leaders from Osun East are behind the incumbent governor for his numerous developmental projects delivery in Ijeshaland. In Osun West, the governor has a solid home base in Ede and Iwo, alongside Ejigbo, Ikire, Gbongan and Odeomu. For Osun Central, the Osogbo people are believed to be behind the governor for transforming the state capital.

The broader political landscape in the country, including the performance of the APC at the national level, could also impact the party’s fortunes in Osun. Public perceptions about national issues, such as security, economic challenges, and governance, could influence voter sentiment.

APC applauds NASS over Rivers emergency rule, carpets Atiku, others

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has applauded the National Assembly for the swift approval of President Bola Tinubu’s Proclamation of a State of Emergency in Rivers State as constitutionally stipulated.

The party carpeted the Atiku Abubakar-led leaders and political stakeholders for condemning the presidential declaration, accusing them of seeking to exploit the situation in Rivers State to escalate tension in the country.

A statement in Abuja on Thursday by the APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka praised the lawmakers for demonstrating high sense of patriotism by expeditiously approving the presidential declaration.

The statement reads: “Today, the 10th Assembly demonstrated patriotism by putting the interest of peace and security of the people of Rivers state first, and uniting in the national interest.

“In this regard, we particularly applaud the opposition caucus for rising above partisanship in support of the proclamation.”

Morka emphasised that the President is committed to ensuring peace, maintaining law and order, protecting critical national assets in Rivers state, and ultimately, restoring constitutional order in which all three arms of government – executive, legislature and judiciary – co-exist and perform their constitutionally assigned functions for the well-being and good governance of Rivers state.

Reacting to Abubakar-led opposition leaders’ condemnation of President Tinubu’s action, describing it unconstitutional, the APC spokesman advised Nigerians to ignore them, stressing that they had failed to do anything in the past to defuse the crisis.

Morka said: “We urge Nigerians to ignore roving opposition opportunists seeking to exploit the situation in Rivers state to escalate tension in the country.

“These opposition figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra state Governor, Peter Obi and former Kaduna state Governor, Nasir El-Rufai stood idly by, did nothing to help defuse the crisis that had become a clear and present threat to peace, safety of lives and national assets in Rivers state.

“Today, these self-serving individuals did what they do best – issued a lengthy, convoluted and utterly meaningless statement intended to score their names on news headlines and drum up tension.

“We urge the good people of Rivers state and all well-meaning Nigerians to support President Tinubu in his effort to secure peace, protect lives and property, and eventually restoring effective constitutional governance in the state.”
