‘He came to spy, ruin Lagos PDP’

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State says it will not miss the party’s 2023 governorship candidate, Dr Abdul-Azeez Adediran, better known as ‘Jandor’, who defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lagos State PDP Vice Chairman (Central), Mr Hakeem Olalemi, made this remark in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), while reacting to Adediran’s return to APC yesterday.

Olalemi, who noted that the exit of Adediran from PDP was not a shock, said the former party candidate came to spy and ruin PDP in the state.

“He (Adediran) is a human being and the Nigerian Constitution allows freedom of associations. He is free to resign from any group or party and join any group he wants.

    • Lagos APC welcomes Jandor, loyalists

The 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Abdul-Azeez Adediran, popularly called ‘Jandor’, has justified why he returned to his former political family.

Adediran, who said he had tried the two parties, noted that All Progressives Congress (APC) was far better than PDP.

He spoke yesterday in Lagos while announcing his defection to the ruling party in the state.

Adediran, with some of his supporters under the guise of Lagos4Lagos, had during the 2023 electioneering campaign defected to the PDP. He contested on its platform and emerged a distant third.

Intrigues trailed his performance and they culminated in his resignation from the party on March 3.

‘Jandor’ recalled his journey into PDP, saying he decided to go back to APC as a reflection of his commitment to the progress of Lagos State and his belief that unity among the progressives was essential to achieving the collective aspirations of the people.

Adediran, who lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his contributions to democracy and nation building, said he had done much to deepen democracy in the country.

APC in Lagos State has welcomed ‘Jandor’ and his loyalists back to its fold.

Reacting yesterday in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the state APC spokesman, Mr Seye Oladejo, said the party was excited to welcome Adediran back to its fold.

  • Of gathering and scattering

    Of gathering and scattering

Gathering and scattering, as good or bad, night or day, perch on diametrically opposed spots in life’s long continuum.

Still politicians, since the dislodgment of PDP from federal power in 2015, would rather scatter to have a crack at power, than gather to consolidate policies and programmes.

Nasir el-Rufai, former Kaduna governor and, before him, Salihu Lukman, famed ex-APC contrarian, have just validated that trend.  But that’s perfectly democratic.

The ruling APC can’t expect its opponents not to dream that whatever hubris struck PDP, which earned it fair banishment into the Siberia of power, wouldn’t strike APC too.

Still, this scattering is often a swashbuckling “me-too” complex.  It’s scalding emotion to strafe the ruling order, and willy-nilly bomb it down.

But back to el-Rufai and Lukman, the twin-totems of this latest excitement en route to Sweepstakes ‘27.

In his APC last days, el-Rufai sounded every inch a party puritan — again, no crime: indeed, a democratic virtue! — alleging the ruling APC had left the rocket that propelled it to power to rust and rot.

Lukman too had played that same role, when el-Rufai, as glorious Kaduna governor, had easy access to President Muhammadu Buhari, as informal golden son — the he, who must be obeyed or, in any case, be indulged!

Lukman excoriated his felt neglect of the ruling party, by its ruling elite. It was the lone voice, of the sole party puritan, shrieking in the wilderness!

Even, with the Bola Tinubu order, he had levied that same charge, primarily for making Abdullahi Ganduje (North West) APC chairman, to replace Abdullahi Adamu (North Central).  It was one Abdullahi replacing another.  But Lukman felt the new APC chair should have come from Adamu’s zone for party balance — hardly illogical!

That was Lukman’s high horse, until he declared he was opting out of APC.  But if he loved APC that much, and pushed without let for its wellbeing, why his present rabid push to unhorse the party from power?  Gathering and scattering!

Read Also: How economic predators ganged up against Tinubu over fuel subsidy removal, by Bamidele

On his own, el-Rufai railed and huffed, scowled and growled, against the alleged neglect of the party, and accused President Tinubu of running a one-man show.

But he didn’t attend the APC national caucus meeting, maybe called at last because of his constant hectoring.  A day or two later, he declared he had resigned from APC for the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to wrest federal power.  Gathering and scattering!

Not a few nettle el-Rufai that his alleged bitterness, for not making Tinubu’s cabinet, self-bungled him out of APC.

But beyond political “yabis” (Fela-pidgin-speak for high-wire banter), why would el-Rufai, virtually in government since 1999, sans the Umaru Yar’Adua/Goodluck Jonathan years, be embittered because of missing yet another ministerial slot?

Perhaps, he felt more betrayed by his native Kaduna APC?  As Adams Oshiomhole virtually strapped Godwin Obaseki to his back, to sell as governor to the Edo electorate, el-Rufai also backed Uba Sani, to sell as next Kaduna governor.

Yet, el-Rufai’s Kaduna legacy, which he expects protégée Sani to guard and protect, has been rubbished. Governor Sani though, has refused to speak ill of his benefactor.

But between active ungratefulness a la Obaseki, preening and rippling, and the passive ingratitude of Uba Sani, which rankles more?  Perhaps all of these scalded el-Rufai’s restive and hurt soul!

But whatever the reasons for his SDP gambit, and the Lukman manic rally for a united opposition to unhorse the party both laboured to build, the two gentlemen would appear to labour under the notorious complex of “it’s either my way, or the highway”!

Again, that’s no democratic crime.  The masses don’t change the society.  Only the critical mass does.  But that critical mass requires a huge dose of courage and daring.

The snag, though: between healthy daring and hare-brained gambit, there is but a thin line.  The one harvests a political after-life, of which President Tinubu is living proof.  The other crops political death-at-dawn!

So, which have el-Rufai and Lukman chosen?  Verdict ‘27 looms!  Gathering and scattering!

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo just weighed-in, in this mid-term politics of movement without motion, with his customary traducement of others, to bury own rot, as two-term elected president.

Now Obasanjo’s public essence is rot, though he loves to posture as some Pope worthy of emulation. But from his records, nothing is farther from the truth.

Still, he over-reached  himself this time, claiming PMB’s was the most corrupt tenure in Nigerian history.  Definitely, in his avid ardour to perjure others, senility has set in?

You feel that portraiture is unfair?  Take a trip to Laderin, in Abeokuta, Ogun State.  Obasanjo that gamed the polity for “donation” as sitting president, to build a personal shrine; and PMB that built the Wole Soyinka train station for everyone, in a season of acute adversity, which of the two is grandmaster of corruption?

PMB, a far junior officer that gives Obasanjo due honour, despite the Owu chief’s un-elderly tantrums, has taught his old commander-in-chief the ABC of decorum in and out of office.  While Obasanjo’s OOPL oozes the self-settlement rule of Obasanjo’s presidency, PMB’s many infrastructural revamp continue to serve millions of Nigerians.

Still speaking of bad-mouthing: Obasanjo also tried to thumb-down Tinubu’s critical infrastructure, as the Lagos-Calabar coastal expressway, with a rail section to boot.  Pray, which rail or road infrastructure did Obasanjo deliver in his eight years of self-distraction?

But Works Minister, David Umahi, already gave a fitting riposte: the nay-party, with their negative hubbub, should stay off that highway when completed!  Spite can’t obviate the sweetness of honey!

Still, President Tinubu (PBAT) has his job cut out for him, in his race against time, to beat the naysayers to the 2027 tape, give inflation a red eye and win over the masses.

A brief PBAT-PMB comparison.  PBAT, a natural progressive, has chosen neo-liberal tactics to drive his reforms.  PMB is a natural conservative.  Yet, he adopted more socio-democratic methods during his tenure.

But both, no matter their tactics, have made greater strides in infrastructure — far more than the PDP years.  Indeed, despite Tinubu’s neo-liberal pains, he is implanting discrete IOUs, in several critical demographics: student loans, the nascent credit culture, and aggressive IT training, to power a prosperous youth segment, etc.

That’s why Obasanjo is revving up his virulent traducement, ahead of 2027.

He attacks critical projects that he knows, if completed, would finally bury him and his presidential mirage — which anyone hardly remembers anyway, but for Obasanjo’s eternal screeching and constant personal nuisance.

Still, the Tinubu-Aregbesola crisis has been unfortunate.  Noise in regnant circles often demonizes Ogbeni as some traitor and implacable foe to the President. That’s not true.

Ogbeni’s street value could have better assuaged the masses, than cost-mouthing ministers that seem to alienate them.  What a missed opportunity!

Still, the electorate must know that those who love to scatter, after helping to gather, often do so for selfish and egoistic reasons.

Nigeria’s redemption and sustainable development compass, from all critical facts, appears closer to 2015, than 1999.

  • APC to El-Rufai: Stop sulking, we remain focused

APC to El-Rufai: Stop sulking, we remain focused

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized former Kaduna State governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, over his recent comments against the party and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing him of pursuing a vengeful agenda.

El-Rufai, in a recent interview with BBC Hausa, claimed the APC had abandoned its founding progressive ideals, prioritizing personal interests over national development.

Responding in a statement on Monday, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, dismissed El-Rufai’s remarks as the outburst of a “self-interested politician, blinded by ego and driven by untamed emotion.”

Morka alleged that El-Rufai’s bitterness toward the party stemmed from his failure to secure a ministerial appointment, insisting that his claims of APC’s deviation from its values existed only in his imagination.

“Today, El-Rufai stands diminished as the epitome of a self-interested politician, blinded by ego, driven by untamed emotion, and brimming with a vengeful desire to “collapse the system.”

“In his BBC interview under reference, El-Rufai supplied the real reason for his soreness, stating that he was disappointed by the way he was treated by President Bola Tinubu and his administration, in ostensible reference to his failed ministerial bid.

“His claim that he exited because the Party had deviated from its founding values or progressive ideology is a smokescreen to weaponize personal grievance garbed as principled dissent. El-Rufai’s appears traumatized by his failure to land a ministerial position. Nursing a bruised ego, he now lashes out at the platform on which he rode to political prominence.”

Morka maintained that APC’s commitment to its founding values and ideals remain as valid and progressive today as they were then.

“El-Rufai’s allegation of a drift from our Party’s founding values exists only in his foggy imagination. Assuming that matters of political conviction had anything to do with his exit, exactly how is the Social Democratic Party (SDP), El-Rufai’s new political abode, an ideological safe haven?

“El-Rufai’s call for opposition members to join him under SDP banner is nothing short of an invitation to drink from a chalice poisoned by selfishness, vengefulness and delusion of grandeur. Nigerians are far more savvy than El-Rufai thinks, and they know that he is driven by raw self-interest rather than a genuine concern for the country.

“Our great Party is unfazed by El-Rufai’s grudge-laden tirade. We continue to welcome millions of new members across the country, who are joining to identify with the Party’s lofty values and support President Tinubu’s bold and transformative policies now birthing sustainable growth and prosperity for our country.”

The party further picked holes in the claim that Tinubu as failed. According to Morka, “El-Rufai’s claim that Tinubu has failed is as outrageous as it is bogus, and a gross distortion of the reality on the ground. Across all sectors, Nigerians are witnessing tangible progress in the delivery of the President’s campaign promises. Indisputably, Nigeria is better off today than when he took office.

“President Tinubu has demonstrated an ironclad commitment to good governance and launched unprecedented policy reforms to address the country’s generational challenges. The removal of fuel subsidy now saves Nigeria an estimated ₦4 trillion annually.

“The unification of exchange rates has resulted in higher foreign exchange inflow, while the country’s foreign reserves have showed resilient growth despite global economic pressures. President Tinubu’s economic diplomacy has attracted significant foreign direct investment, and reforms in customs and taxation have led to a massive increase in non-oil revenues, while sustained reform in oil and gas sector has led to an historic boost in the country’s oil export, now upwards of 1.8 million barrels per day.

“The President’s strong political will to re-imagine and revitalize Nigeria’s economy is paying off with significant improvement in the country’s GDP growth rate now surging to 3.8% year-on-year in Q4 2024, up from 3.46% in the previous quarter, marking the highest growth rate posted since Q4 2021.

“This is a direct outcome of the administration’s prudent economic policies and providing a favorable business environment that is widely applauded by the international financial and investment community.

“Further, Nigeria’s balance of payment has seen remarkable improvement, with a substantial trade surplus of $14.31 billion in 2024. This is a result of the administration’s vigorous promotion of non-oil exports, reduced reliance on imported goods, and diversification of the country’s economy.

“This impressive performance precedes an impending data overhaul which may reveal an economy larger than initially estimated. Prospects for further growth is assuredly bright, with real GDP projected to increase from 3.0% in 2024 to 3.6% in 2025, according to Afreximbank Trade Intelligence Solutions.

“In addition, under President Tinubu’s steady leadership, state and local governments now receive vastly higher allocations from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC), enabling them to extend development to their people. This increased funding has become a potential game-changer for grassroots development, making it possible for the execution of critical projects and provision of essential services to all Nigerians.

Nigerians are in no doubt about President Tinubu’s uncompromising commitment to economic reform, good governance, and improving the welfare of Nigerians.

“Rather than engaging in scurrilous propaganda and deliberate misinformation, El-Rufai should offer constructive criticism or alternative policies as expected of serious minded political opposition. His misleading rhetoric and personal attacks on the President are reprehensible and calculated to undermine the country’s progress.”

Admitting that El-Rufai is free to choose his political affiliation, Morka advised him to “quit sulking, get a grip and salvage some respectability.”

Why I returned to APC, by Lagos former PDP candidate Jandor

The 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, has justified why he returned to his initial political family.

Adediran, who said he had tried the two parties, noted that APC was far better than the PDP.

He spoke on Monday in Lagos while announcing his defection to the ruling party in the state.

Adediran, with some of the supporters under the guise of Lagos4Lagos, during the 2023 electioneering process, defected to the PDP and flew its governorship ticket and came a distant third.

He recalled his journey into the PDP, adding that he decided to go back to the APC as a reflection of his unwavering commitment to the progress of Lagos state and his belief that unity among progressives is essential to achieving the collective aspirations of the people.

“Before you are quick to remind me of the reasons upon which we left APC in the first place, let me respond with a popular Yoruba adage that says if a woman has not tried two husbands, she probably would not know which is better.

“In APC, we have a leader, even if you fault his selection choices, you can’t fault his desire to always win for his party to the benefit of all members, followers and the state.

“While in Lagos PDP, you have a leader that will, at every election cycle work against his own party, and willfully dash the hopes of many party members and followers. We have chosen the better alternative.

“Our journey in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 gubernatorial election and the election petition at the tribunal through to the Supreme Court was driven by a sincere desire to win for PDP and serve the people of Lagos state.

Adediran, who lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his contributions to democracy and nation building, said he has done much to deepen democracy in the country.

He also the president’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiami and Seyi Tinubu, for their roles in ensuring his smooth return to the APC.

Adediran urged his supporters across the state to join him in embracing the new chapter, and work with him to build a Lagos that works for everyone.

“We remain committed to the values of service, integrity, and progress. Together, we will continue to champion the cause of a better Lagos for present and future generations,” he said.

APC applauds Buhari’s loyalty to party

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended former President Muhammadu Buhari for his solid reaffirmation of loyalty to the party.

Reacting to a media report by the former Kaduna Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai that he got the approval of the former President before he defected from the ruling APC to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Buhari said he will never turn his back against the ruling party.

El-Rufai, during an interview with BBC Hausa was quoted to have said: “I left the APC with his (Buhari) full knowledge. I visited him on a Friday and informed him of my decision to leave the party because I consult with him on all my matters“

But Buhari through media aide, Malam Garba Shehu reaffirmed his loyalty and commitment to the party, insisting that he is still an APC member.

Commending the patriotic stand of the former President, APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka in a statement on Saturday in Abuja urged party members to emulate Buhari’s action.

Accidentally to the APC spokesman, “We applaud the former President for swiftly clearing the air and putting distance to efforts by certain individuals to tacitly associate him with their nonplussed political choices.

“The former President’s unalloyed loyalty to our great Party, the platform on which he was twice elected as President, has further reinforced his reputation of astute integrity and dignified elder statesman,” Morka maintained.

Thr Governing party urged members to emulate Buhari’s worthy example of loyalty and commitment to the party.

APC chieftain Mumuni cautions El-Rufai over ‘Lagos Boys’ remarks

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has strongly condemned the recent remarks made by former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, where he alleged that those who worked for the ruling party were sidelined while political positions were given to “Lagos boys.”

El-Rufai, in the BBC interview, also accused the APC government of deviating from its founding principles, alleging that positions were now being distributed based on favouritism rather than merit.

However, Mumuni’s reaction underscores growing discontent within the APC over El-Rufai’s statements, with party loyalists dismissing his claims as baseless and self-serving.

In a statement issued on Friday, the renowned security expert accused El-Rufai of making flippant and divisive statements that unfairly drag Lagos indigenes into his grievances.

According to him, “One needs to caution Mallam El-Rufai about his reckless statements. Although, we were together in the CPC before the formation of the APC, he should not drag Lagosians into his unfounded claims. Those he refers to as ‘Lagos Boys’ are not even the bonafide sons of the soil. They are individuals from other states who have merely lived in Lagos and remained loyal to the President for years. Hence, El-Rufai should be mindful of his utterances. I have no issue with him speculating about APC or the Tinubu government, but he should leave Lagos out of his rhetorics.”

The APC stalwart, who was actively involved in the party’s campaign security committee during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidential election, questioned El-Rufai’s assertions, emphasizing that his contributions to the APC were undeniable.

According to him, “Some of us, who are bonafide Lagosians and worked tirelessly for the president’s election, have not been appointed to any positions. I was in the campaign crew and personally procured equipment from A to Z for the security committee where I served.

“Despite my contribution to the success of Asiwaju’s victory, you will not see me parading the presidency like some people. If the president finds me suitable for an appointment, I would gladly serve, but that time has not come yet. So, I will not allow a stranger to take me across my father’s compound.”

Mumuni further dismissed El-Rufai’s criticism of President Tinubu’s administration, asserting that the former Kaduna governor has no right to undermine the contributions of Lagos-based APC loyalists.

Pastor Reuben Initiative, APC stakeholders unite to take over Bayelsa in 2027

Chief Reuben Wilson, founder of the Pastor Reuben Initiative for Good Leadership and Accountability (PRIFGLA), has called on APC faithful in Bayelsa State to unite and prepare for the 2027 elections.

Wilson, a member of the Governing Council of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, emphasised the importance of bringing party members together to take over governance in the state.

According to Wilson, the APC clearly won the last election in Bayelsa but the PDP took over governance through unconventional means, saying that with unity and preparation, the APC can successfully take over the state and maintain power at the centre.

Wilson praised President Bola Tinubu’s performance, stating that he has done incredibly well and deserves the party’s support and encouraged party members to work together to deliver Bayelsa State for Tinubu in 2027.

The meeting, which brought together unit coordinators, ward coordinators, constituency, senatorial, local government, leadership of the Initiative, women leaders, men, state working committee, and other groups, aimed to rally support for the APC’s mission to take over the state. Wilson challenged party members to go back to their wards, convince people to join the APC in order to secure victory for the party come 2027.

He lamented the situation whereby some political leaders who were given appointments empower members of the opposition while APC members are left to suffer. “You cannot empower your opponent to fight against you; it is a bad political calculation that will come back to haunt you, and I urge those involved to have a rethink,” urging party leaders with appointments and resources to empower members.

He emphasised that the time to plan and take over governance in Bayelsa is now, and if the party fails to act, they will miss their chance.

Bayelsa APC chairman, Barr. Dennis Otiotio, commended Pastor Reuben Wilson for coming up with a support group that seeks to rally support for the party, saying that Pastor Reuben alone has empowered over 1,000 APC faithfuls.

Speaking through the APC Organizing Secretary, Dr. Coronation Tokpo, Otiotio stressed the need for the party to be united and speak with one voice in order to wrest power from the PDP come 2027.

He noted that the APC leadership is concerned about little divisions in the party but assured that the APC is doing all it can to resolve differences to ensure that all party leaders are united ahead of the elections. An APC stalwart in Bayelsa State, Williams Alamene, urged members to jettison their political differences and work together to take over power in 2027, as according to him, Bayelsa will fare better in terms of development with an APC-elected governor. The APC Senatorial Youth Leader, Donny Sigah, described Pastor Reuben Wilson as a passionate and selfless leader who can deny himself to empower his followers, adding that with leaders like Pastor Reuben Wilson, the APC has a chance to win the 2027 elections. The Director-General of the Pastor Reuben Initiative for Good Leadership and Accountability (PRIFGLA), Eseimokumo Frank Soko, said the Initiative is formed to galvanize support for the APC in line with its slogan “United for Progress.” Soko pointed out that Pastor Reuben Wilson has taken it upon himself to unite members through the initiative and the empowerment of thousands of party supporters, as he believes that is the only way the party can take over in 2027.

APP sues APC over refusal of ‘reinstated’ council executives to vacate offices

Action Peoples Party (APP) has sued All Progressives Congress (APC), its state chairman and others for contempt, following the refusal of sacked local government executives to vacate office.

APP is challenging APC at the Federal High Court, Osogbo, Osun State in suit number FHC/OS/CS/103/22 and joined Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and others as defendants.

APP said the matter was filed in pursuant to judgment of November 30, 2022.

The suit noted that the Federal High Court judgment tagged the conduct of the poll as unconstitutional, invalid, null and void, subsequently sacking them from holding offices.

The plaintiff prayed the court to commit the defendants to prison for contempt if they fail to comply with the court judgment.

The motion said: “This court has been informed that even as at today, March 11, you are yet to comply with the lawful order of the Federal High Court by forcefully occupying offices in the 30 councils in the state.

“You are hereby directed to comply with the court order forthwith by vacating the offices or you will be guilty of contempt of court.”
