He noted that such a decision would strengthen the party ahead of the primaries and encourage other districts to intensify their campaign efforts.

Delta APC Crisis: Sack State Chairman Now, SEC Urges NWC

The leadership crisis affecting the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) took a new turn on Wednesday as the State Executive Committee (SEC) called for the removal of Elder Omeni Sobotie, the party chairman.

In a letter to the National Working Committee (NWC) through the national chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, dated 19th March 2025, the committee accused the state chairman of sowing discord among party members.

They alleged he has engaged in anti-party activities by collaborating with the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, to the detriment of the APC.

The letter, signed by 81 members of the Delta State SEC, with copies sent to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shetimma, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), also condemned the state chairman’s call for the removal of the National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.

Expressing a vote of no confidence in the chairman, the SEC stated in their letter, “We would also like to bring to the attention of the NWC that Sobotie’s leadership as state chairman has been an unmitigated disaster. He has consistently demonstrated an inability to fulfill the functions of his office.

“He has been absent without explanation for prolonged periods, creating a leadership vacuum that has allowed impostors and unauthorised elements to undermine the party’s institutional integrity and effective functioning.

“Since he was appointed chairman, Sobotie has failed to convene any meetings of the SEC and has neglected to hold regular meetings of the SWC. He has continued to operate in a dictatorial manner, unilaterally usurping the authority of the SEC and SWC without restraint.

“He has also perfected the use of proxies in a clear abdication of responsibility and betrayal of trust.”

The SEC further accused the chairman of cultivating a close relationship with the Delta State government, controlled by the PDP. This dubious association, the committee alleged, has severely compromised the party’s integrity, exposing it to political manipulation and sabotage.

Calling for the immediate removal of the chairman, the SEC stated that any further delay would inflict irreparable damage that may “be beyond repair if nothing is done to rein in Sobotie’s nefarious activities and damaging inactions.”

“We have completely lost confidence in Sobotie’s leadership as state chairman, as he continues to act with impunity in blatant disregard for the party’s constitution. We strongly urge the National Working Committee (NWC) to take immediate disciplinary action by suspending Sobotie from his position as state chairman.

“This decisive measure is crucial to prevent further damage to the party’s reputation and integrity,” the SEC pleaded.

Ondo APC urges Ajayi to stop playing politics with security

Ondo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused a former deputy governor of the state, Agboola Ajayi, of exploiting ‘the sensitive issue of security for political gain.’

It said issue of insecurity was not unique to Ondo State and a national challenge that has plagued many regions.

The Ondo APC said Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa inherited a complex landscape of security threats that required a multifaceted approach.

Director of Media and Publicity of the Ondo APC, Steve Otaloro, in a statement, said Aiyedatiwa have been ŕcommitted to tackling security challenges head-on.

Otaloro said Aiyedatiwa has implemented various initiatives aimed at enhancing the security architecture of the state.

“Under his leadership, the Amotekun Corps has been strengthened, and the collaboration between local security agencies and community leaders has been prioritized. These efforts have been instrumental in curbing crime rates and restoring peace in affected areas.

“Mr. Agoola Ajayi chooses to engage in fear-mongering, which only serves to create panic among the populace.

“As a former Deputy Governor, Mr. Ajayi is aware of the delicate nature of security matters. His public pronouncements, including the dissemination of unverified figures regarding the state’s security votes, not only undermine the efforts of the government but could also inadvertently provide critical information to criminals.

“It is imperative that he exercise caution in his statements, as baseless claims could jeopardize the safety of our citizens.

“We urge Mr. Ajayi to adopt a more responsible approach when discussing security issues. Instead of playing to the gallery, he should focus on collaborative efforts that promote peace and security in Ondo State. The people of Ondo State deserve leaders who prioritize their safety over political ambition.

Osun govt slams APC national secretary over state of emergency call

The Osun State Government has condemned the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Basiru, for advocating a State of Emergency in the state over the ongoing dispute regarding local government administration.

Basiru had earlier warned Governor Ademola Adeleke to learn from the crisis in Rivers State, suggesting that a State of Emergency might be necessary due to resistance against the reinstatement of council chairmen.

However, Osun Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, dismissed Basiru’s remarks as “callous, self-centered, and unlawful.”

He argued that the political situations in Rivers and Osun were not comparable, warning Basiru and the APC against destabilizing the state’s peace in a bid to reclaim power.

Alimi criticised his call for federal intervention, insisting that Osun remains stable and does not warrant emergency measures.

“While the call, no doubt stems from a demented mind as is the case with Senator Ajibola Basiru is, it will be recalled that the same Basiru had in the not too recent past made a similar call when I engaged him on a national television station on the Yes/No local government chairmen in Osun state.

“It must, however, be emphasized that not only Basiru alone holds this senseless and obnoxious impression but the entire APC cohorts and their members in Osun state, who on a daily basis, are scheming for one mischievous device or the other in order to come through the backdoor to take the reigns of governance in Osun state but by the grace of God and with the support of the people of Osun state for the administration of Ademola Adeleke, all the evil machinations against the people oriented government of Ademola Adeleke will not see the light of the day.

“Furthermore, we call on our President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu to see through the antics of people like Ajibola Basiru, a rejected and frustrated politician and his already rejected APC apologists in Osun, by rejecting the wicked and baseless call for the declaration of the state of emergency in Osun.”

  • APC to unveil blueprint on ideological stand

APC to unveil blueprint on ideological stand

In a bid to reposition the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) is set to release a blueprint outlining its ideological stance.

Dr. Lanre Adebayo, Director General of The Progressive Institute (TPI)—the APC’s think-tank and intellectual resource center—disclosed this in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Adebayo, the party’s leadership has tasked the institute with developing a well-defined ideological framework to establish a deeply rooted and enduring political system for the APC.

According to the Director General, “President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje are determined to chart a path towards providing an ideological foundation for governance, as well as for the APC.

“I can tell you authoritatively that the National Chairman will soon inaugurate a committee of experts, whose job is to develop a resource material on the progressive ideology of the APC.”

Admitting that party politics in the country are not ideologically rooted, Adebayo said APC leaders are conscious of this, stating that is why there is a deliberate attempt to develop an ideology for the party.

To this end the DG said APC Chairman through the institute is assembling a team of experts to come up with a well defined ideological position for the party.

“What the Chairman of the party has done through the institute, is to assemble a team of experts across the board, political scientists, journalists, professors, sociologists, and others, who have a clear understanding of Nigeria, its people, its history, the trajectory of this country, the affairs and aspirations of Nigerians. So, a progressive ideology, even there is a universal movement, it will be tailored to meet the aspirations of Nigerians, within the context of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Aside this, TPI boss said his institute is saddled with the responsibility of undertaking research that would drive the party’s programmes and policies, as well as undertake capacity building activities for the party and for elected and appointed officials and other critical stakeholders in governance.

He further said that the core mandate of the institute is to strengthen the leadership recruitment processes of the party.

“The Institute is an independent think tank, self-sustaining, and that is delivered by the National Working Committee of the party to ensure that it can function with little or no hindrance by highly charged political environments. And, therefore, its focus is not just the APC alone, its focus is national.

“Therefore, our programmes are meant to address the need to satisfy the party, that being its parent body, through advice, through research, through recommendations, but it’s also to satisfy the wider Nigerian interest.”

  • Rivers: APC, PDP clash over emergency declaration

Rivers: APC, PDP clash over emergency declaration

The All Progress Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) last night differed on the imposition of emergency rule on Rivers State.

While the APC argued the decision was  ‘’constitutionally backed,’’ the PDP said it was an ‘’utter violation’’ of the supreme law.

Their positions were contained in statements by their spokespersons Felix Morka (APC)  and Debo Ologunagba (PDP).

The ruling party argued that by the action,  President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ‘’demonstrated courage and leadership in forestalling a looming breakdown of law and order’’ in the state.

It blamed Governor Siminalayi Fubara for sowing the seed that led to the emergency rule.

The party said that Fubara not only destroyed the democratic foundation and ended governance in the state, he ‘’stripped himself of all constitutional protections of the office of governor.’’

The APC  statement partly reads:  ‘’The declaration of a state of emergency, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was a necessary, constitutionally-backed measure to protect lives and property and extend governance to the good people of Rivers State. The safety and well-being of the people are paramount at this time and must trump all political considerations.

‘’Governor Siminalayi Fubara is the ‘’author’’ of the extreme events that have unfolded in the state.”

But in its statement, the opposition PDP rejected the emergency rule ‘’based on the conviction that the President lacks constitutional powers to do such.’’

“The PDP rejects this attempt by the President to override the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and undermine the votes and Will of the people of Rivers State by seeking to depose a democratic government and foist an undemocratic rule in the state, ‘’ the party said.

It said the suspension of Fubara  and appointment of an unelected individual, Vice-Admiral Ibokette Ibas   to govern the state  was  ‘’a clear attack on our nation’s democracy, an abrogation of the votes and democratic right of the people of Rivers State.’’

The PDP added: “Mr President should recognise that his order to an unelected individual to forthwith take over the government of Rivers State is illegal and a clear recipe for crisis, a  threat to the peace and stability of not only Rivers State but the entire nation.’’

It  said that  the    imposition of emergency rule in the state was a ‘’part of the larger vicious plot to foist a siege mentality across Nigeria, decimate the opposition, impose a totalitarian one-party state and turn the country into a fiefdom.”

The statement reads: “The action of Mr. President therefore clearly borders on an attempt at state capture. It is the climax of a well-oiled plot to forcefully take over Rivers State for which the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been bent on stoking crisis to ensure that democracy is ultimately truncated in the state.

“Nigerians are invited to note that the situation in Rivers State and the reasons adduced by the President cannot justify the declaration of a state of emergency in the State under the 1999 Constitution, rendering the declaration completely incompetent.

“ Nothing in Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution relied upon by the President in the declaration grants him the exclusive powers to declare or execute the declaration of a state of emergency without recourse to the statutory approval of the National Assembly.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Section 305 (2) provides that “The President shall immediately after the publication, transmit copies of the Official Gazette of the Government of the Federation containing the proclamation, including the details of the emergency to the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, each of whom shall forthwith convene or arrange for a meeting of the House of which he is President or Speaker, as the case may be, to consider the situation and decide whether or not to pass a resolution approving the proclamation.

  • ‘How power can shift to Oyo APC in 2027’

‘How power can shift to Oyo APC in 2027’

Col. Gbenga Adegbola (rtd) is eyeing the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State ahead of 2027 poll. He spoke with reporters about the Oyo Agenda and the hurdles before the party. Excerpts by EMMANUEL OLADESU

Your ambition to guide Oyo State towards new leadership has sparked discussions among various interest groups. What are your thoughts?

The entire Oyo State has highly intelligent people. It is good that my entry is beginning to open the minds of the people who are the ones bearing the pains that have become too hard for them to continue bearing. As they begin to understand the power that democracy has given them, they have woken up from mental suppression to realize that now is the time to use their power to make a meaningful change.

Oyo may be as a key battleground between the PDP and APC. How do you perceive this scenario?

This is how I see it. On the contrary, Oyo State APC is not a Party of battlers. We are all brothers and sisters of the same political family, the APC. We need peace and fortified unity for APC to rescue the State. Therefore we should brace up against opposing Parties because competition always tries to bring out the very best of the Party aspirants. This is why I have adequately prepared and joined the APC for the people to decide. I expect anything and everything from other contestants. Some may emerge to contend within the party, and others who feel displaced may choose to even decamp to another Party. It is within their right and choice. I believe in building the electorate as a strong institution instead of presenting an individual as a strong leader because, as a people, we are strong, but as individuals, we are weak, and this is the reason the Broom is an unbreakable bunch being the symbol of APC. My present focus is to support the strengthening of the State APC to become the true image of the glory of the ruling party at the National level.

What is your ambition, governorship or senatorial?

For me, the time has come for all APC members to unite by joining forces together to rescue the state from the PDP. It is never an easy task to defeat an incumbent or ruling party. United we win. Therefore, we will work to cement the cracks in our structure to be formidable and impenetrable. Only those who lack confidence feel jittery, just as the weak feel threatened. However, this is not yet an election campaign season. When the time comes, it is still the people who will ultimately decide who becomes their candidate. It is an insult to the good people of Oyo State to think that anyone can buy the ticket in cash and carry it. Let our focus be on helping the State party executive to build a stronger APC and upgrade the party from its previous state. My supporters, in their own rights, have decided that I am the preferred and most qualified to contest to be the State Governor by 2027.

Do you feel you possess the necessary attributes and support to secure the APC nomination in Oyo State?

Ability to secure victory at the party primaries will make me the candidate of the APC, and a strong contender to win the General election. My growing acceptance across the State, among the electorates, is advancing.  As a son of the soil, I am proud to attend the Polytechnic Ibadan and Ladoke Akintola University Ogbomoso, both in Oyo State, above all other educational institutions I attended in Nigeria and abroad. I am a Fellow of five reputable professional institutes and a Distinguished Fellow of the Africa Institute (DFAI). Also, I am Certified and Chartered in Accountancy, Treasury Management, Strategic Administration, Security, and Public Administration, and a Certified Management Specialist at the prestigious London Graduate School. In my distinguished service in the Nigerian Army, I was decorated with MSS, FSS, CMH, and River Niger Star-RNS (COAS Award for Bravery), amongst others.

Ibadan has historically been a centre of power since the era of the Western Region; what are your perspectives on how Oyo State can reclaim its glory as a political centre that holds significant importance in the Southwest?

DOyo is a special State, and indeed a pacesetter. Pa (Chief) Obafemi Awolowo, of blessed memory,, remains the greatest political sage of Nigeria. Chief Awolowo never presented himself as a person. He, as an individual, was a people. That was the strength of his campaign, which had far-reaching acceptance by giving others a sense of belonging. In like manner, I have presented myself not as a selfish or self-centred person but as a people because I am prepared and ready to bear the interest of the people; thus, this project should be seen and felt as our project, not as my project. Remember, the former Premier’s seat of power and immense political influence was the old Ibadan, which is the present-day Oyo State, as the enviable headquarters of the old Western region, making it the glorious hub of Western region politics and a foundation worthy of emulation for our politics today. His legacies are evergreen as they still survive into the present day. Though his shoes are too large for me to fill, considering that his coverage was beyond Ibadan, even beyond the region, at a national sphere; 2027 will be the time for us to rescue Oyo State from the putrescent era of the PDP to restore progress to the state for the survival of the existence of the common man who can barely afford a meal a day.

Oyo State is known for its rich diversity, encompassing traditional worshippers, Christians, and Muslims. What approach would you take to promote peaceful coexistence among these groups?

My case is special but not uncommon. I have wonderful biological parents and a native origin. One of my parents is a devoted Muslim. My other parent is a devoted Christian. And, we all hail from a native community. In this way, I learnt religious tolerance or peaceful co-existence which began from my home, my upbringing and across Oyo State as a modern cosmopolitan, multicultural or broad.

Based society. I have much respect for all the great political leaders and elders in the APC, who I met in the Party when I declared, and together, we will operate in unison. I have the solution to security challenges. I will establish a structure that deactivates the beneficiaries of insecurity and set up economic Productivity, Women and Youth Engagement which altogether will surely go a long way in further disarming insecurity.

How equipped is the APC to reclaim leadership from the PDP in Oyo in the 2027 elections. Are you receiving the backing and endorsement of the APC as you pursue your goals?

It is possible to reclaim leadership from the PDP in Oyo in the 2027 election.  A ruling Party that is prepared at the National Secretariat cannot expect less from its Oyo State Secretariat. We are equipped. The build-up is not build-down, meaning that the buildup is from the LGA to the state and then to the National. What is ongoing is the galvanizing of progressives across the state for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the state APC to make it a revived and truly formidable force, ready for the 2027 elections. Every aspirant receives equal encouragement, without any form of bias or favouritism, from the Party. The onus is for each aspirant to prepare adequately, knowing the strength of opposition from the incumbent Government and State ruling Party. We want to build a victorious political tower and have estimated what it takes to complete the structure. For me, I think the matter of endorsement is rather in the hands of the people, I mean the electorates.

Coming from the Oke-Ogun area, which has yet to see a governor arise from its ranks, do you view your candidacy as an opportunity to change that narrative? There is a notion of – Awalokan – among the Oke-Ogun community. Do you see yourself as a strong candidate that embodies their aspirations?

Loyalty and discipline have been the hallmark of the Oke Ogun/Ibarapa people. They have a proven reputation for respect to the state above their area, section or district. The vacancy is for a governor of the entire Oyo State, not a governor of any section of the state. No community is master or slave to the other. History is in the making, considering that respect is reciprocal, everyone’s expectation is for our enduring respect to beget the respect of those who, over the decades, have received Respect from the Oke-Ogun people. In this way, a state candidate will not be seen as an indigene of Ogbomosho, Oke-Ogun or Ibadan amongst others. Oke-Ogun is not short of competent aspirants.

In fact, the notion among the Oke-Ogun people for their son to become the 2027 Governor of Oyo State is blowing hot in the air. But, like I always say, I want the State to be my constituency. The people already believe in me, even though I prefer to rather be an OYO State aspirant, cum APC candidate when the party’s electorate at the Primaries shall decide, by the special Grace of Almighty God.

A’Ibom APC dismisses anti-party allegations against Akpabio, others

The Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied allegations of anti-party activities against the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio,.

It also absolved the Minister of State for Petroleum (Gas) Obongemem Ekperikpe Ekpo, and APC State Chairman, Obong Stephen Ntukekpo of working against the interest of the party.

The APC has described the allegations as “baseless” and “tissues of lies” concocted by faceless individuals seeking cheaper popularity and relevance in the political space.

The State publicity secretary of the party, OtoAbasi Udoh said that the APC does not recognize the individuals who made the allegations as members of the party.

“They are clearly seeking cheaper popularity and relevance in the political space. Their allegations are nothing but tissues of lies, concocted to mislead the public and create unnecessary tension within our party,” Udoh stated.

The allegations, which were detailed in an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, claimed that Senator Akpabio, Ekperikpe Ekpo, and Ntukekpo had compromised the party’s integrity in favor of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

The letter alleged that the trio had deliberately weakened the APC in the state to secure PDP’s support for Akpabio’s third-term Senate ambition in 2027.

However, the APC has dismissed these allegations as “spurious” and “politically motivated.” The party has reaffirmed its commitment to its ideals and principles, pledging to continue working together to build a stronger and more united APC in Akwa Ibom State.

The APC also assured President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that it will emerge victorious by a landslide in the 2027 elections under Senator Akpabio’s leadership.

Recall that Senator Akpabio has been at the center of controversy lately, with allegations of sexual harassment made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

However, Akpabio has strongly denied these allegations, stating that he has never harassed any woman and has always upheld the highest respect for women.

PDP loses two more Rep members to APC

Two more members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives on Tuesday defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Husseini Mohammed Jallo representing Igabi Federal Constituency of Kaduna State and Adamu Tanko representing Suleja/Tara/Gurara federal constituency of Niger State hinged their defection on the lingering crisis in the PDP.

In the letter of defection read at Tuesday plenary by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen, Jallo said the lingering crisis in the PDP has made it difficult to serve his people effectively.

He also said that he was also influenced by the leadership style of the Speaker and his belief in the principle of unity, adding that he found the APC as the appropriate platform to continue to serve the people of his constituency.

Jallo, who is the second PDP lawmaker from Kaduna State to defect to the APC, said the current challenges in the PDP has made it difficult for him to continue his membership of the PDP.

Also in his letter, Adamu Tanko said he has consulted widely with his constituent and resolved to switch allegiance from the PDP to APC.

While raising a Constitutional point of order, Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda said the opposition members in the House will not be tired of saying that the right thing should be done.

He drew attention to the judgement of the Supreme Court that defection of any member must be complete, adding that there is no evidence before the House suggesting that the members have done the right thing and carry out their defection properly.

Deputy Minority Leader, Ali Isa JC said the issue of defection must be taken seriously, adding the two members should withdraw their letters of defection or face litigation.

He said the PDP remain a very strong party and opposition, adding that there was no crisis within the party.

He added the defecting members must take the part of honour by resigning their positions and going back to their people to face a fresh election.
