APGA to field presidential candidate in 2019

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) will present a candidate for the 2019 presidential election, it was learnt yesterday.

National Publicity Secretary Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, who spoke yesterday in Awka, said the party was looking towards giving Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano the slot.

Obi-Okoye said the party will not make the mistakes of the past, where it did not present any candidates, adding that the National Working Committee has not zoned the slot to any part of the country.

He said: “We have not zoned our presidential candidate to any part of the country. But since APGA is seen as a political party with Igbo interest, it’s natural that we may look for a presidential candidate within.

“The Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has distinguished himself as a great party man with great achievements; so he is one of our best for the 2019 presidential race.

“But one thing is clear; we must field a presidential candidate in 2019. We won’t make the mistake of the past.”

Complete Anambra Airport, APGA S/Africa urges Obiano

The All Progressives Grand Alliance ( APGA ), South Africa chapter, has urged Gov. Willie Obiano to complete the state Airport project at Umuleri to enhance commerce and trade.

The Chairman of the party, Mr Henry Onyekumnaru, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Durban, Kwazulu Natal Province of South Africa on Thursday that when completed, the airport would generate revenue and employment for the state.

“ As we congratulate Gov. Obiano on his re-election, we urge him to implement his legacy projects.

“ The one that is important to us is the airport, located at Umuleri. We understand that a Chinese firm is handling it and it is expected to be completed in 36 months,” Onyekumnaru said.

He said that with the state-owned Orient Refinery situated in Aguleri, the airport would become a major hub in West Africa.

“ The airport is designed to handle cargo. Majority of the business community in the South-East are from Anambra.

“It will encourage them to import cargo direct from any part of the world, instead of going through Lagos or Abuja.

“ Besides, when the refinery is completed, it will produce aviation fuel. This will make easy for major airlines to refuel in Anambra instead of going to Ghana.

“ The good news is that the refinery is not far from the airport, “ the chairman said.

According to him, the airport will also serve as an export hub for the business community in the country.

“ Our expectation is that in the next 36 months, Anambra will be a major business hub for aviation, oil and gas sectors.

“Nigerians will certainly key into this venture for the development of the state and country, ” Onyekumnaru said.

  • I won’t dump APGA, Says Obiano

I won’t dump APGA, Says Obiano

The Governor of Anambra State, Willie Obiano, on Friday debunked speculations that he was planning to dump his party, All Progressive Grand Alliance ( APGA ) for the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC).
According to him, he has no such plans.
Obiano, spoke with State House journalists after ‘thank you’ visit to President Muhammadu Buhari, for allowing a free and fair gubernatorial poll in Anambra.
Stressing that he would never dump APGA, he dismissed as inconsequential the defection from APGA to APC by Emeka Ojukwu Jnr, the first son of late hero and former leader of the party, Odumegwu Ojukwu.
The governor who said he has extended hand of fellowship to his opponents to join hands with him to turn the fortunes of Anambra round, said that he was prepared to work and not disappointed the people of the state for the confidence reposed on him.
According to him, the President was excited over his visit and assured him of his respect for the wishes of Anambra people to freely elect a governor of their choice.
He said, “I came to see the President na to thank him for keeping to his word that the election in Anambra will be free and fair and that is exactly how it went. I’m very happy to come to report to him personally on the success of the  election.”
Asked if he expected to win such a contentious election, Obiano said, “Well, I thank God it is the Lord’s doing. To win 21 over 21 is not an easy task, it just showed the faith the people had in me and that is exactly why it happened and I thank Ndi Anambra for the confidence reposed on me  and reassure them that this will encourage me to work harder.”
On how he intends to unite the people, he said, “Well, I have extended olive branch to my colleagues, my friends that contested with me and as you can see they have all congratulated me and we will hold hands and match on. You see, our private ambitions can never be greater than the interest of Anambra State. I believe we are working on well.”
On the new assurances he got from President Buhari, he said, “Well, Mr. President was excited that the votes of Ndi Anambra counted and that that is a legacy he wants to leave behind, that he conducts free and fair elections without any interference from the federal.”
Asked if his relationship with Peter Obi will be smooth now that he has been re-elected, Obiano replied, “I don’t have a problem with anybody. I’m doing well, I don’t have a problem with anybody.”
On how he was going to strengthen his party, he said “My party is very strong in the south east and that you will see very soon in the coming elections and from there we will match on.”
On insinuations of plans to dump APGA for APC, Obiano said, “No. Never. That is totally unfounded. I will never leaver APGA, I’m the leader and the BoT chairman of APGA and again by God’s grace the governor and governor-elect.”
Asked if he has plans to woo back Ojukwu’s son he replied, “He is of no consequence I’m sorry to say.

Anambra deputy governor hails voters for re-election

Anambra State Deputy-Gov. Nkem Okeke on Monday hailed the people of the state for huge support for the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the Saturday’s governorship poll, which led to his re-election.

Okeke made the commendation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka.

Okeke is Gov. Willie Obiano’s running mate.

He said that the decision of the people to renew the mandate of the present administration showed that they had taken their destiny in their hands.

Okeke added that the support was an expression of confidence in the Mr Willie Obiano-administration.

He assured members of the electorate that APGA would adhere strictly to its manifesto.

According to him, the administration will not relent in developing all sectors of the state’s economy to achieve a secure future.

He told NAN that the administration would consolidate on the achievements it recorded in agriculture, education, commerce and industry and healthcare delivery, among others.

Okeke said that APGA’s victory in the poll was a call for more work.

“The administration would make the people proud; we will not fail Anambra people,” he said.

NAN reports that Obiano secured 234,074 of the 457,311 valid votes to defeat Dr Tony Nwoye of the All Progressives Congress, who polled 98,752 and Mr Oseloka Obaze of the Peoples Democratic Party who polled 70,293 votes.

  • APGA, PDP, APC: Warming up for battle

APGA, PDP, APC: Warming up for battle

Who wins the governorship election in Anambra State on Saturday? Correspondent NWANOSIKE ONU examines the preparations of the major political parties for the poll.

The governorship election in Anambra State is just two days away.

Already, the atmosphere is charged. There is tension in the Southeast state.

Fears are rife that violence may mar the exercise. This may be to the warning by the members of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB)’s threat that they will disrupt the poll.

Many people are migrating to Anambra. The hotels are fully booked. Security personnel from Abuja and other states have started arriving the state.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmood Yakubu, has visited the state and challenged electoral officers to prepare for a good job.

He warned them not to compromise the standard of the commission, reminding them of what befell those who violated the rules in 2015 general elections.

However, the INEC boss told them that he would throw a party for them, if the standard is maintained during the election.

The candidates of the leading political parties are becoming jittery. Propaganda is thriving. Spin doctors are re-moulding opinions.

Five days ago,  the flag bearers were being assessed at a live debate organised by the Channnels Television.

During the debate the former Minister of Aviation and one-time Corps Marshal of the federal road safety commission (FRSC), Chief Osita Chidoka, wanted to steal the show with his eloquence. Although others did well, the United Progressive Party (UPP) candidate appeared outstanding.

Others at the debate were the candidates of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Dr Tony Nwoye, Governor Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA),  Oseloka Obaze of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Mr Godwin Ezeemo of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA).

The campaigns will come to an end today.

The candidates have an axe to grind with Obiano. There was a war of words over the removal of campaign posters.

While the other parties are accusing the (APGA) led-government of being the mastermind of such action, the party’s defence is that it is all blackmail.

Nwoye is not relenting in his bid to emerge victorious. But, eyes are also on Obaze. He has been criticising Obiano throughout the campaigns. He is a highly organised technocrat-turned politician. He is full of appeal. The former governor, Peter Obi, has assisted him a great deal. He has tried to create a hollow in the governor’s record.

Ezeemo is counting on his philanthropic gestures to deliver the seat to his party.

Despite impressing the public with his oratorical skills during the debate, Chidoka faces predictable hurdles on Saturday. He may take the fifth position.

The observer groups have arrived the state. Some of them are holding seminars and workshops for the reporters and other Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on the election.

The attention of the political parties has shifted to the wards and local government areas. They have set up election committees with a mandate to deliver them to the parties.

Obi, who has vowed to stop Obiano at all cost, is not leaving any stone unturned to realise his motive. But, the PDP is a divided party. Many PDP chieftains, who are working underground for Obiano, are checkmating Obi and his foot soldiers.

The anti-Obaze PDP chieftains include Hon. Ben Nwankwo, who represents Orumba North and South Constituency in the House of Representatives and Chief Ifeanyi Ubah of Capital Oil and Gas. Scrores of PDP chieftains have defected to APGA.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has relocated to his native Alor, Idemili South Area. He is committeed to the success of his party.

He held a rally at Alor on last week, where he spoke about the readiness of  the APC to deliver Nwoye to Ndi- Anambra.

One of the APC chieftains who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Obi was not keen about the winner of the poll. His only motive is to ensure that Obiano’s second term bid is scuttled.

However, Obiano has won the hearts of civil servants, following the prompt payment of salaries before the end of every month. He has also promised more welfare packages tor them, if re-elected.

The populist tendency has made him the toast of the workers, who now refer to him as the “Alert Governor.”

Obiano is not indifferent to stomach infrastructure. He has been distributing bags of rice to workers and pensioners during the  festive period. Pensioners are singing his praise.

The fear in some quarters, especially in APGA, is that the election may not be free and fair as promised by the INEC.

Last week, its national chairman, Ozonkpu Victor Oye, raised the alarm that two truckloads of INEC materials were intercepted in a hotel in Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area.

But, the electoral umpire denied it, saying that it was a figment of imagination.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, described the allegation as baseless.

Will the poll be marred by violence? Will voters turn out en masse? Will it be free and fair? Saturday will tell.

  • ‘APGA ‘s planning something devilish’

    ‘APGA ‘s planning something devilish’

Chief Charles Amilo is the Director of Media, Tony Nwoye Campaign Organisation. In this interview with Deputy Political Editor RAYMOND MORDI, he alleges that Governor Willie Obiano is planning to rig the poll.

THERE are mutual fears and suspicions by different parties that opponents are preparing to rig November 18 election. Does the APC have such fears?

The ruling party in Anambra has a habit of rigging; it does not have a habit of pursuing an election. The 2010 election was won by Sen. Chris Ngige. INEC said 97,000 votes were enough to declare Obi governor. If the ballot papers were to be available and recounted today, you will discover that Ngige won.

In 2013, they had to deprive people from Idemili North, Idemili South, Onitsha South Okpoko and Orumba South the right to vote; there was no election in those areas. So, after the election, they said because there were no voting in five hundred and ninety-something polling units, election would be held in those polling units the next day, which was a Sunday. Our people protested that we cannot vote on a Sunday, but they did not listen. After that election, they allocated a number of votes to the man that is now in power and declared him winner openly.

So, what I’m trying to say is that, this time around, they couldn’t understand this tsunami called Dr. Nwoye; he’s now a tsunami snowballing into a movement. If you had come to Njikoka on Sunday and saw what happened there, everybody who is anybody in politics in Njikoka is now on Tony Nwoye side. In the Omambala region, which is the governor’s home turf, Tony Nwoye is clearly on the rampage their too.

Apart from the antecedents you’ve just mentioned, do you have any concrete evidence that they are planning to rig the November 18 election?

Just two days ago, they arrested one of them with ballot papers at Orumba. This news is trending in Anambra at the moment. But APGA is denying that the man in question is not one of their members. They have not won any election since that of 2003, which happened because the people were desperate to get rid of former Governor Chinwoke Mbadiniju. In 2010, they rigged; in 2013, they also rigged. It’s now part of their culture. They can’t win any election without rigging.

There are reports that the state government, three months ago, ordered civil servants to bring their voters’ card or forfeit their salary. In your view, is it possible to use the photocopies of the cards to rig this coming election?

The mere fact that they have conjectured it, means that they have plans of what to do with it. This is the era of internet and hacking, where you stay in Russia and hack into America and direct the course of elections there. The point is, we don’t know what they want to do with it. They did not just wake up and order workers to bring their voters’ card, so that they can photocopy it front and back; they must have plans of what to do with the cards. Somebody must have thought out how to use the cards to do something devilish during this election. All we can do now is to draw the attention of the general public to this devilish move. How can they ask people to bring their voters’ card, so that they can photocopy it front and back? That is a devilish thought. It must have originated from somebody who has thought out a plan to do something sinister. This move is not transparent. Therefore, we must shine our eyes and start looking for how they want to use it to rig the election. We cannot just write it off. It will be to our own peril, if we do so.

The government believes its performance so far is enough for it to secure another term. What’s your view on this?

I have argued it many times over; this government has failed. It has only succeeded in the direction of propaganda and fake news. Let us take my hometown, Enugu-Ukwu, as an example. This is a town that produced the incumbent Deputy Governor, Dr. Nkem Okeke; this is town that has a House of Reps member. The only promise they made to us was the road from Nkwo Enugu-Ukwu to the express, a three-kilometre road. They promised to fix that road during the campaign to elect Governor Obiano about four years ago. He was running with our son as deputy, people believed him. In all fairness to my brother who is the Deputy Governor, if he cannot deliver a three-kilometre road in four years, he had better step aside. Go there now; they destroyed peoples houses under the premise that they are going to widen the road. But no compensation was paid to the owners of the destroyed houses. Flood is now raging the lower part of that road, because the other part is located on a hill. Yet, the contractors have practically not done anything. If you came to the church the day we were burying one of our sons recently, the Archdeacon there warned the Obiano-led government that if it doesn’t finish that road before November, it would not get a single vote in this town. Go to all communities in Anambra, it is the same story everywhere.

There are fears that your candidate may not make much impact in the Anambra South, because electing him may amount to giving Anambra North four extra years…

Let me tell you; all the candidates from the North have signed a four-year deal. Tony Nwoye is already a member of the House of Representatives; he is not a novice in politics. He will abide by that agreement, because he is a man of integrity; after all, he can always go to the Senate.

What makes you believe your candidate will win this election?

Tony Nwoye will win because of his antecedents, as well as the programmes he has enunciated and its acceptability by the people. On healthcare, if you don’t have money to travel to India and get yourself treated, you will die. All the hospitals in Anambra today are now mortuaries, not even consulting clinics. Go to Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital, which was a specialist hospital in 1963. Go to the archives, dig up the facts on Eastern Nigeria in 1963. For instance, all the doctors in Enugu-Ukwu General Hospital in 1963 were specialists. But go there now, it is just a little after 10am, and find out if there is any doctor on duty as we speak. They come in by 11am and go by 1pm, just to attend to a few people and go away. On Thursdays, they would roll out about 20 corpses from the place. The following day, they would roll out about 25. They have expanded the mortuary; that is the only building they have expanded all these years. Nwoye has decided that the idea of having four specialist hospitals in the state that Dr. Ngige mooted years ago would into play. Right now, there is no single medical care for our people. Ngige rehabilitated the water scheme in Awka and there was portable drinking water up to Ogbankwa. The same thing in Onitsha; the water project in the army barracks was supplying Warriwo, Odume and the neighbouring areas up to GRA Onitsha. Today, there is no water supply in Onitsha, Awka or Nnewi. The water tank in front of my house was built by Dr. M. I. Okpara. It has capacity for five million gallons and was meant to supply not only Enugu-Ukwu, but also Abagana, Nimo and Nawfia. Today, it is completely dried up. Three years ago, they came and repainted it green, collected money from the World Bank on the auspices of the state’s rural water scheme.

  • APGA urges Fed Govt, others to follow due process

APGA urges Fed Govt, others to follow due process

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) yesterday advised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and other Federal Government establishments, whose officials and workers will participate in next Saturday’s governorship election in Anambra State, to be above board.

The party urged them not to be partisan but ensure that the electoral guidelines, rules and regulations are adhered to.

It advised the government and its agencies to provide a level-playing field for the 37 political parties participating in the November 18 election.

APGA also urged them to ensure a credible poll in which every vote counts and for the electorate to be the deciders of who wins the election.

A statement in Abuja by APGA’s National Director of Publicity, Ifeanacho Oguejiofor, said: “More so, APGA implores them not to give in to anti-democratic agents and negative reactionary forces moving about with their filthy lucre, seeking the connivance of willing hands to conspire against our fledging democratic ethos, produce fake electoral materials, engender seemingly crisis to compromise the voting process, manipulate the collation of results, undermine the emergency of the popular choice of the Anambra eople and invalidate the genuine outcome of the Election.

  • Anambra: Time to protect APGA

If recent developments in All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) are anything to go by, then, some of my fears are fast becoming real.

“The coming into being of APGA in the first place as a political party did not go down well with those who thought the Igbo had finished as far as having a party the people could look up to in the entity called Nigeria was concerned.

“The notion was, and still is, that the Igbo lack the capacity to organise themselves into one common umbrella for the purpose of furthering their interest…

“Whatever dimension the plots against APGA may be…. no effort will be spared to stop anybody from using or destroying APGA for ….selfish interest. As long as God lives, the sins of all those who have constituted themselves into Judas Iscariot in APGA will find them out.”

The above excerpt written by yours sincerely five years ago (August 2012), entitled: APGA: How will posterity judge Obi?, is still relevant in today’s political calculation with regard to the coming Anambra State governorship contest.

The final battle for who becomes the governor of Anambra State is barely three weeks away. November 18, the day for the election is almost here.

The flag-off of the campaigns and the electioneering proper have seen all the candidates, both the pretenders and the serious ones traversing the nooks and crannies of the 21 local government areas that make up Anambra.

A look at the candidates will reveal a pack of highly qualified contenders, but in politics, qualification is not always taken into consideration. And that is part of the reasons for this intervention.

For those who do not know, Anambra means a lot to the South-East zone in particular and in general, to Nigeria. Whatever happens in Anambra, positively or negatively, reverberates in other parts of the South-East.

Also, because of the itinerant nature of the Igbo due to their industry and commercial mindedness, any positive or negative event that happens in Anambra would automatically be felt in other parts of the country.

Suffice to say that one state that nobody can afford to toy with in Nigeria because of the high level of political awareness of the indigenes, their educational prowess, their international exposure to business (trade and commerce), as well as their depth of knowledge in socio-cultural and religious matters, is Anambra.

Since Nigeria’s return to civil rule in 1999, Anambra has remained one of the few states in the country that you can be sure has not got it wrong in terms of who governs the people.

In fact, to be qualified to run the state you must have made your mark in your chosen area of competence.

This narrative is significant for us to appreciate the calibre of candidates that are lining up to be made governor on November 18 by Ndi Anambra.

But the history of modern Anambra political journey will not be complete if we fail to capture the role played by late Nigerian statesman and Biafra warlord, Dim Chukwuemeka Odimegwu-Ojukwu, who, through the instrumentality of APGA, envisioned the Anambra of tomorrow.

Ojukwu thought of a party that would capture the real essence of the Igbo in the Project Nigeria without necessarily braking away from the union. He saw in APGA a strong negotiation tool and mouth piece for Ndi-Igbo and had wanted the people to congregate around the party to pursue their destiny in Nigeria.

Fast forward to the eight years of former Governor Peter Obi under whose tenure APGA was first tested; you will appreciate while the governor is either wasting his time in PDP or would soon get frustrated and exit himself.

APGA’s journey over the years has no doubt, been tortuous. Even while Ojukwu was still alive and politically active, APGA’s journey was with issues like what anyone can see in other political parties. During the tenure of the Pioneer Chairman of the party, Chief Chekwas Okorie, there were issues that tended to tear the party apart, but reason prevailed that made it possible for APGA to be retrieved from the jaws of those who were out to tear it apart.

That is why the coming election in November 18 is for Obiano to lose. The contest is between Obiano and the rest and all the contenders know that as fact. Call it incumbency factor, but it goes beyond that because the election is between APGA that has done so much for Ndi Anambra in the past 12 years and the other parties.

Former Governor Peter Obi, no doubt, is one of the greatest beneficiaries of what APGA stands for. His rise to political limelight is linked more to his membership of APGA than his so-called current appellation of political sagacity and sense of prudence in management of state resources.

Yes, he did his best for Anambra as governor under APGA, but that he wants the party dead by all means tells a lot about his politics. Granted, he handed over to Obiano who has just done four years, but should Obiano, whose second term will also come and go, be the issue or the party that fielded Obiano, which will remain forever if properly managed?

If Obi does not know, the body language of most eligible Anambra electorate is that his preferred candidate, Oseloka Obaze of the PDP will be rejected on November 18, not because Ndi Anambra hate him, but because the masquerade behind him is seen as a betrayer of APGA course of which he was a huge beneficiary.

The insinuations that other parties are thinking of going into unholy alliance just to stop Obiano won’t even fly. Why? That alliance, if it takes place, will go a long way in exposing to the people of Anambra who their real enemies and agents of darkness are.

My take is that the Anambra electorate must be vigilant by resisting every attempt to compromise the election. They must also keep keen eye on the officials of the INEC most of who are experts in result manipulation.

The APGA leadership and particularly the Willie Obiano Election Committee had done well to sensitise Ndi Anambra on the need for continuity for Obiano. All their efforts must not be allowed to be truncated by a gang of politicians, no matter how highly placed, operating within Anambra and from Abuja who will feel good if the joy APGA has brought to Ndi Anambra in the past 12 years and still ready to sustain, is terminated. APGA has been awake in Anambra since the days of Ikemba Nnewi. The time for it to sleep cannot be now. Never!
•Ubochi, a political analyst wrote from Owerri
