    Saraki appoints Gemade as panel chair

    Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki yesterday appointed Senator Barnabas Gemade as the chairman of the Adhoc Committee on Ecological Disasters and Bad Roads.

    Observers said the appointment was strategic as Saraki aimed to use the offer to further consolidate his hold on power in the Senate.

    Gemade is one of the leaders of the Senate Unity Forum, a group of senators opposed to the emergence of Saraki as Senate president.

    The appointment followed the adoption of two motions on the state of disrepair of some major roads in Akwa Ibom State and landslide in parts of Isiukwuato and Arochukwu Local government Area of Abia State.

    Besides Gemade other members of the committee included Senators Athanasius Achonu (PDP Imo North), Bassey Akpan (PDP- Akwa Ibom North East), Mohammed Shittu (APC- Jigawa North East), Olarenwaju Tejuosho (APC-Ogun Central), Barau Jibrin (APC Kano North).

    Others are Senators Matthew Urhoghide (PDP- Edo South), David Umaru (APC-Niger East), Uche Ekwunife (PDP Anambra Central), Mohammed Hassan (APC-Yobe South), Binta Masi (APC- Adamawa North) and Donald Alasoadura (APC-Ondo Central).

    The committee was asked to present its report to the Senate within two weeks.

    Blackstone appoints Sanusi Chairman

    Blackstone Group, a private equity giant, announced yesterday that its Black Rhino unit had appointed Sanusi  Lamido Sanusi as chairman of its board of directors.

    Sanusi is Emir of Kano and the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

    The appointment comes after $310 billion Blackstone announced in August 2014 that it had partnered Dangote Industries-led by billionaire Aliko Dangote – to invest jointly up to $5 billion over the next five years in energy infrastructure projects across Sub-Saharan Africa.

    “Emir Sanusi has a comprehensive mastery of the interdependence of Africa with the global economy,” Mimi Alemayehou, chair of Blackstone African Infrastructure and managing director at Black Rhino, said in a statement.

    “He has the courage and integrity necessary to give us the full, candid and impartial counsel that a long-term investor in Africa needs. We are gratified and, indeed, privileged to have a partner of such immense stature alongside us as we chart our course.”

  • Enugu Gov appoints SSG, CPS

    Enugu State governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has announced the appointment of Mr. Gabriel Aja as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

    Other appointments made by the governor are Mr. Uwakwe Abugu, as the Chief Press Secretary (CPS) and Mr. Louis Amoke, as a Senior Special Assistant Media).

    Until his appointment, Abugu was a Chief Correspondent of The Telegraph Newspaper.

    Wike appoints Jonathan’s minister as SSG

    Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has appointed the immediate past Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Kenneth Kobani, as the Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG).

    Kobani, a former Rivers State Commissioner for Finance, who was in the cabinet of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for about three months, hails from Bodo-Ogoni in Gokana Local Government Area of the state and he is succeeding George Feyii, also an Ogoni.

    Wike, a former Minister of State for Education, also appointed an ex-Chairman of Emohua LGA of Rivers State, Emeka Woke, an engineer, as the Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt. He succeeds Chief Tony Okocha.

    Wike was two-term Chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, Rivers State the same period Woke was at the helm of affairs in Emohua LGA, and both of them were known to be close friends.

    The immediate-past governor of the state, Rotimi Amaechi, had shortly after his Supreme Court victory on October 25, 2007, appointed Wike as Chief of Staff, Government House, Port Harcourt. But with his appointment as a minister in 2011, Wike recommended Woke as his successor, but Amaechi, then the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), kicked against the choice and opted for Okocha.

    Wike also appointed the publisher of a Port Harcourt-based tabloid, Hard Truth, Opunabo Inko-Tariah, as his Special Adviser on Media & Publicity.

    Other persons appointed by Wike included Dr. A. J. Beredugo as Senior Special Assistant on Research and Documentation; Gilbert Nria and Imeh Fubara, as Senior Special Assistants, office of the Deputy Governor.

    The new Rivers governor had earlier appointed the state’s Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Felix Obuah, as Sole Administrator of the Rivers State Waste Management Authority.

    Wike gave the new sole administrator 72-hour ultimatum to clear all the refuse in the state.

    Niger State Governor Malam Abubakar Sani Bello has appointed Alhaji Shehu Umar Danyaya, a retired civil servant, as the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).

    Others appointed are Mikhail Al-Amin Bmitosahi, a former member of the House of Representatives, as the Chief of Staff; Dr. Ibraheem Dooba, a teacher and a Columnist with Daily Trust, as the Chief Press Secretary; Haruna Mamman Vatsa as the Director of Protocol and Yusuf Waili as the Senior Special Assistant, timekeeping and schedule.

    The appointments are with immediate effect.

    Tambuwal appoints Imam Imam as Special Adviser

    Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has appointed Malam Imam Dalhatu Imam as his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs.

    The appointment was contained in a statement Tambuwal personally signed and issued to journalists in Sokoto yesterday.

    Imam’s appointment is the first to be made by Governor Tambuwal few hours after he was sworn in as governor.

    The newly sworn governor in the statement, admonished the new spokesman to re-dedicate himself to his new assignment by contributing positively to information management flow in the state.

    However, the Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs had served in the same capacity when Tambuwal was the Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2011 until few days ago.

    The appointee, a former Group Politics Editor at THISDAY Newspapers, was born on July 16, 1977 in Gboko, Benue State, although he hails from Taraba State.

  • MAN appoints president

    Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has elected Dr. Frank Jacobs as its president. He was elected as the association’s ninth president at its 42nd Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Lagos. He succeeds Chief Kola Jamodu, who was elected for a four-year term in 2010. Prior to this position, Dr. Jacobs was MAN Vice president (Enugu Zone).

    He has served in various positions in the administration. He was formally Chairman, Imo-Abia branch of the association. He was also member, MAN Corporate Affairs and Strategic Planning Committee from 2010-2014. He is the founder and chairman, Jacob Wines Limited based in Imo State. Dr. Jacobs studied at the Incarnate Word College, Santonio, Texas USA where he graduated in 1978 with B.A Chemistry (Magna Cum Laude).

    In 1982, he was awarded PhD (Analytical Chemistry) by the Washington State University, Pullman, Washington, USA. He is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria (FICCON) and a fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria (FCSN).In recognition of his contribution to the development of Nigeria, Dr. Jacobs was honoured in 2007 by President Olusegun Obasanjo with the National Honours Award of Member, Order of the Niger (MON). He also received the national Merit Award for local materials Utilisation in 1994.

  • UNILORIN appoints new DVCs

    The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has appointed Prof. Gabriel Olatunji of the Department of Industrial Chemistry and Prof Nike Ijaiya of the Department of Educational Management as Deputy Vice Chancellors for the next two years.

    Olatunji will serve as DVC, Research, Technology and Innovation, while Prof Ijaiya is the DVC, Academic.

    The DVC-designates, who were elected at the 240th Special Meeting of the University Senate Tuesday last week, take over from Prof. Raheem Adebayo Lawal (Academic) and Prof. Felix Oladele (Research, Technology and Innovation), whose two-year tenure ended on June 18.

    The appointments are based on the University’s Miscellaneous Provision of Decree No. 11, Section 5(a) of 1993 as amended by Decree No. 25 of 1996.

    Also, a new Provost has been elected for the UNILORIN College of Health Sciences, Prof. Wahab Johnson.  The former Dean, Faculty of Clinical Sciences takes over from Prof. A. B. O. Omotoso, on July 31.

    GTBank appoints executive director

    Guaranty Trust Bank plc has announced the appointment of Hezekiah Sola Oyinlola as a non- Executive Director.

    In a statement, the lender described Oyinlola as a seasoned professional with over 30 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, having worked at Schlumberger Group since 1984.

    He has held multiple senior roles on the management team and was the first Nigerian Managing Director of Schlumberger Group in Nigeria. In 2011 he was appointed to his current position as Chairman of Africa Schlumberger Group.

    The bank’s Managing Director, Segun Agbaje said: “We are pleased to have appointed Mr. Oyinlola; a seasoned professional with a proven track record to this position. All of us at Guaranty Trust Bank wish him the very best in his new position.”

    He said Oyinlola’s appointment has been approved by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in compliance with the highest level of corporate governance standards.
