Seven months after: Artistes still wait for compensation

It is seven months now since the Artistes’ Village at the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, was demolished by the management of the National Theatre.  Edozie Udeze in this interaction with some of the affected artistes reveals that government is yet to fulfill its promises to the artistes.

On January 23rd this year, the immediate past General Manager of the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos, Mallam Kabir Yusuf sent bulldozers and caterpillars to the Artistes’ Village located within the premises of the National Theatre.  Their mission was to demolish what he termed the shanties and illegal structures within the Artistes’ village.  In the process, a lot of art works and buildings were destroyed.  This was so because the action took place very early in the morning without adequate warning or space for the artistes to salvage their works and save their property.

Seven months on, the affected artistes are still bemoaning their fate.  They are still waiting to be compensated.  When the demolition took place, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed paid an official visit to the place.  He promised to pay compensation to the affected artistes on or before the end of this month (August).  As at press time, the promises had not been fulfilled and the artistes were not happy.  Even though they were hopeful that something would still be given to them to start their professional lives anew, they were not satisfied with the level of arrangement on the part of government.

One of those most affected is Monday Guobadia.  In an interview with The Nation, he said, “I was given this place on rent to be doing my creative work by the National Council for Arts and Culture, a parastatal of the federal government of Nigeria.  I am a sculptor and I have been here for seven years.  Then, suddenly one morning Kabir sent bulldozers with heavily armed police officers to level down my gallery and other structures within this premises”.

Recounting his ordeal in the hands of security officers detailed to supervise the demolition, he said, “It was awful.  They didn’t even allow me or some other artistes to salvage our works.  Before I could be contacted, a lot of damage had already been done to my workshop and gallery.  Works worth millions of naira were destroyed.  That place was a swamp when it was given to me.  I used my money to sand fill it and made it habitable.  Then one day one man came here and said it was an illegal structure.”

Almost talking to a point of tears, he went on, “when I did it to suit my taste, I started producing arts there.  Even though I was able to rescue some of the works, I lost the most valuable of my sculptures done over many years ago.  Now the Minister said he would compensate us.  When he came here, he wasn’t happy to see how the structures were destroyed.  On the long run, he promised to give us N20 million, even though what we calculated was more than that.  But we have agreed to accept the money; at least to have something to start life all over again.”

Now, living almost on charity and what some of his friends contribute to help him, Guobadia is idle.  He has nowhere else to ply his trade; no workshop to engage in his creative venture.  “I only try to do one or two things to survive and friends to help me too.  But for how long?  The minister said, they would turn this place into a global artiste village.  But as you can see now, there is no sign to that effect.  I don’t even know if we still have a government in this country”, he mused, robbing his chin agonizingly.

Guobadia, however, admitted that the minister had sent a message to reassure them, yet there are no significant signs to fulfill the promises before the end of the month.  “This is the seventh month.  We are still waiting.  There’s nothing a poor man can do.  I can’t fight government.  Who am I?  All these happened just because they put a man who did not understand or value the art as the G.M of the Theatre.  I hope they’ll not replace him with another G. M who doesn’t appreciate our creativity,” he pleaded.

As the artistes await the intervention of the minister to carry on with their trade, their spokesman, Tope Babayemi told The Nation that the promises would still come to pass.  Even though he reiterated that August is the deadline given by the government, he was of the strong believe that it would still materialize.  He said: “Government is going to pay us compensation.  No doubt about it.  There are different levels of discussion according to the letter sent to us by government.  First is the temporary relocation of those affected by the demolition.  Then after that the place will be rebuilt.  First step is the compensation.  Government has written us and made an offer.  So what we are waiting for now is that process to commence.  And I have been assured that before the end of this month, the minister will find time to do that.  I mean to meet with us to pay the compensation.”

It is believed that the process will be transparent and that the media would be invited to witness it.  Babayemi explained further: “Now when you are talking about art works, it is impossible to value that in terms of monetary value.  Art works are inestimable.  What were destroyed were many and much.  How do you value the visual arts, the galleries, the costumes, the dance materials and lots more?  These are not quantifiable.  Even then we are dealing with a minister who has shown more responsiveness to the arts than before.  We have decided therefore to accept the compensation.  It is a token, yes, we know.  It is to support those who have lost their means of livelihood.”

Then when the time comes the place would be rebuilt to meet international standards and those affected will get their shops back.  As an Artistes’ Village that is befitting to a country, the shanties will no longer be tolerated so as to preserve the sanctity of the environment.  Babayemi said more; “during his last visit, the minister made a comprehensive tour of this premises.  So we believe him, we hope it will happen.  So by the time you add the compensation to the rebuilding of the place, you have a significant amount being expended by the government.  So, I would not like to dwell so much on the compensation because other juicy things will follow.”

“What will happen here, in all intents and purposes, is a plus for the arts.  The work we are doing here will equally benefit more from the changes we envisage.  For now, I have been keeping my colleagues in check, hoping the best will happen.  They have said severally that they would go back to the trenches.  But I have told them to hold on.  That government has till the end of this month to do their bit,” he said.

But the artistes have not been temporarily relocated seven months after.  This is one of the reasons why some of them do not as yet trust the sincerity of the promises made.  “When you get to the point of conflict,” Babayemi interfaced, “the process of negotiation takes time and has to be meticulously done.  The fact that we are artistes does not mean we are unintelligent people.  No.  The processes of government take a little time to materialize.  That we know and we have to wait.  Look at the budget, it affected us.  By the time the minister came and made these promises even the budget had not been approved at that time.  We must not allow the suffering to affect our patience.  Yes, Nigerians are suffering.  We must not allow that to rob off on the mobility of our trade.  We are noble people, a thinking people.  That’s why I keep telling them it’s not time yet to go back to the trenches.”

As it is, it is hoped that the artistes will not continue to be disenfranchised as they contribute their quota to the economy and make money to keep life afloat.  End of the month is here and it is time to redeem these promises and keep the art sector on a sounder footing.

  • ARTISTES AND PENCHANT FOR PUBLIC SYMPATHY

ARTISTES AND PENCHANT FOR PUBLIC SYMPATHY

The country’s economic woes has ensured that many Nigerians are incapable of getting quality healthcare when ill. This development has also affected some Nigerian celebrities, who in the face of health issues, have had to resort to financial help from the public even as others remained defiant. JOE AGBRO JR., OVWE MEDEME and DUPE AYINLA-OLASUNKAMI write:

    NATTY STILL NEEDS HELP

HE brought many smiles to Nigerians as an actor in the 1970s and 1980s. But today, the plight of comic actor Natty of New Masquerade fame who is down with partial paralysis is still attracting donations from Nigerians. He is among a growing list of Nigerian stars forced to depend on the goodwill of others to battle medical challenges.

In June 2014, some mischievous reports pronounced him dead and the news swept across the Nigerian entertainment scene that Natty of New Masquerade fame was dead. It turned out to be a lie. But what is fact is that the actor whose real name is Romanus Amuta, has been battling ill-health. He had suffered a stroke in 2009 and was diagnosed with paralysis. No one could deny that.

In fact, the executives of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, aside refuting the passing away of the actor, intervened in assisting with his healthcare. The AGN President Ibinabo Fiberisima, wasted little time in being with him.

Refuting the actor’s demise on her Facebook account, Fiberisima posted a picture of her and Natty in Natty’s home and wrote that she spoke to him and that he was alright.

“I just told uncle Romanus (Natty of new masquerade) he looks better now,” she said.

“He managed a large smile and said “now that I have seen you I am free now and very happy. I am defintely going to get better. Thank you ada’m.’”

His first son, Chukwuma Amuta, a medical doctor, had also said he would take care os his dad to the best of his ability.

Hitherto, in a 2013 interview, the Enugu-based actor had asked for financial help from Nigerians. According to him, he acted ‘poor’ and he didn’t want to die ‘poor’.

Some cast of the rested New Masquerade include James Iroha (Giringory Akabuogu), Christy Essien-Igbokwe (Apena), Claude Eke(Jegede Shokoya), all of whom he starred alongside Amuta in the comedy series, passed away between 2011 and 2013.

ALARIWO SOUGHT $130, 000 MEDICAL COSTS

HE claimed he was never broke. But when illness plagued Rotimi Martins, who is more known as Alariwo of Africa, he had to come out, to shout to the world that he needed their help to raise about $130, 000, which was equivalent to N26m last year, the sum needed to treat his condition which was diagnosed as Varicocele, which is an enlargement of veins inside the scrotum.

In an interview, he had shared his pains at that period last year.

“I have been going through a lot, these past weeks,” said Alariwo who celebrated 20 years of marriage with his wife in June.

“My wife has been in the hospital for over one month. She has been down with acute pulmonary embolism. It has been very tough, but God has taken control. The doctors at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital said only a few people could survive the ailment. I am happy that she is one of them.

“But her treatment has cost me quite a lot of money. I spent an average of N54,000 everyday for about 19 days. Apart from this, I was buying a drug called Clexin at N37,000 for her every week.”

He had to sell some of his properties, including his car to take care of the medical expenses.

Alariwo could be considered lucky that some of his friends like Ayo Animashaun, Otunba Sesan Rufai helped while he said Julius Agwu donated $35, 000 to help him.

    OJB GIVES UP

NEWS hit the web on July 3rd, 2013 at about 10.30pm that the Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi had approved for the full sum of $100,000 Dollars needed for OJB Jezreel’s kidney transplant.

But three years after the kidney transplant operation in India, the popular Nigerian music producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist, passed on at the age of 49, before his 50th birthday.

According to information gathered, it was revealed that in 2015, after his return from India, the producer had suffered a setback. But the embattled song writer and producer was said to have refuted the rumour through an SMS broadcast.

One of his friends, Mr Kool in his tribute stated that OJB, have kept mute about his condition relapsing; as a result of what he encountered, when he first ask  for funds from the public in 2013.

According to Mr Kool on his tribute to the late music producer, “Yes, you told me your health was failing again, and sadly you refused to make it public because of prejudice; you said you refused to seek help again because you were shy and embarrassed because the last time you did, some said you made millions and you wan use the money buy house.”

The renowned and multiple awards winning music producer, before his departure according to information teamed up with The Bowtie Club with support from some well-meaning institutions to launch a Kidney Trust Fund; with the sole aim of galvanising funds towards assisting those suffering from kidney problem to get treatment abroad.

LEO MEZIE STILL HOPES FOR THE BEST

FOR ailing Nollywood actor, Leo Mezie, funds for his kidney transplant is still a long way from what is being required for his surgery. He needs N10m to get a kidney transplant.

The actor has been battling the ailment for several months on his own going on dialysis weekly which has caused him fortunes.  With the recent passing away of entertainers as a result of financial limitation, it is with great expectation that Nollywood celebrities will raise up to the rescue of their own.

According to the actor’s wife, Maureen, some people have been using their social platforms to create awareness for the fund raising, but the question is, will that the donations come in time to save the actor; who is said to be in urgent need of the transplant.

Speaking to The Nation, Nollywood actress Chioma Okoye, in charge of Nollywood group; where each actor is expected to contribute a sum of N20, 000 each, revealed that the contributions from colleagues have been poor. But noted that another campaign group has been formed on her Instagram page to give people access to the actor’s account details, where the sum of N2,000 can be paid to fast-track the funding.

The illness is said to have reached an advance stage and urgent financial assistance to forestall the worse is needed.

    NOMORELOSS DIDN’T WANT ANYBODY BOTHERED

CELEBRATED singer, Solomon Osinuga, aka Nomoreloss was known for being selfless. He championed the raising of funds for his fellow artiste, OJB Jezreel, now late, during the time of his illness.

So his demise came as a shock to Nigerians and Nigerian entertainers. This is even moreso because almost no one had an inkling that the singer and music maker was ill and in critical condition.

According to those close to him, as a selfless person, he never wanted anyone to experience the pain he went through.

As narrated by the late singer’s brother, Ademola Osinuga, he never wanted anyone to experience the pain he went through. He always called everybody to tell them he was fine, regardless of his condition.

“On his last night at the hospital, he made it clear to everyone that he was fine. In fact, he asked me to get him cranberry juice on my way to the hospital the following morning. When we got there in the morning, we were told he had passed on.

“It was pretty difficult. We did everything together. He never took ‘no’ for an answer. He was not vain or flashy and could not pretend about anything. He was not interested in the flamboyance in the entertainment industry, he just wanted to sing,” he continued.

“The only regret and pain I have is that he kept so many secrets to himself. That is a mysterious thing I cannot explain right now. He was not very open. He kept telling everyone he was fine even at his last moments. His passing is still a big shock,” he said in an interview with a newspaper house.

Nomoreloss came into public consciousness in 2002 when he featured in Ruggedman’s classic beef song, Ehen. Prior to that, he was a presenter on the music TV show Groovoidz.

    MUNA KEPT HIS BUSINESS PRIVATE

AS narrated by close friends of this popular actor, Muna Obiekwe was a very private person. It is that attitude towards life that made him keep his ailment on the low, even when it became life threatening.

That, coupled with some sad occurrences that changed the course of his life. According to those close to him, the actor thought if he could survive the death of his parents in a ghastly motor accident and getting shot, he could also pull through the ailment.

Fellow actress, Ejiro Okurame, who happens to be his close friend and colleague, narrated how she had to seek financial help from her other colleagues in the industry like Mama G, Kanayo O. Kanayo and others. According to her, they gave some money

The way it was told, Muna was a very private person and didn’t want to burden anybody with his issues. Even the president of AGN, Ibinabo Fiberisima confessed that she had foreknowledge of his illness but that Muna didn’t paint a picture as is appeared

“Muna’s offence and crime was that he was a very private person. He was a secretive person. Even to my face, he hid something from me. But I didn’t take that on him. I still had to do what I did because of God. He’s my brother and he will forever remain my brother.”

On his demise, several insinuations emerged as to what killed the actor and father of two. Although it was established that he lost the battle to renal failure, an ailment which he had struggled with for a while, some accounts said that heavy drinking and smoking are some of the factors that triggered the sickness.

Even the President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, Ibinabo Fiberisima confessed that though she got wind of his ailment from the actor himself, he didn’t paint a true picture of what he was going through.

  • Artistes turn up for International Widows Day

Artistes turn up for International Widows Day

The need for widows to be protected from societal and cultural discrimination has been advocated. This charge was made by the founder of the Felix King Charity Foundation, Felix King Eiremiokhae at the recently held the 2016 International Widows Day conference at Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja last Thursday.

Making the call, Felix Eiremiokhae, of the famed 90s hip-hop group, Fellyx and Mozzyx said that the the conference is a vital first step in promoting the protection and respect for the rights of widows across all regions and cultures in Nigeria.

“It hurts to know that we have such a sour history of treating widows so bad to the point where the United Nations had to set aside a special day to remind us of the inhumane practices we have sustained over generations against our mothers, sisters, wives,  cousins and aunts,” said Eiremiokhae who helped pioneer hip hop in Nigeria.

He also described widowhood as an invisible but huge problem across Nigeria and the World today.

Delivering the keynote address, Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Hon. Elizabeth Ativie, called on state and local governments to localise the 2014 Supreme Court judgment on the rights of widows.

Ativie, who spoke on the topic, Right of the Widow: Xraying the 2014 Supreme Court Judgement on the Right of Women to Inheritance, said that the culture of maltreating widows cuts across the length and breadth of the country.

Among those who came out to grace the occasion are leading lights in the Nigerian entertainment scene like Wunmi Obe, Chioma Chukwuka, 9ice, Gordons, Frank Edoho, Seyi Law and a host of others.

Also present at the conference were the Deputy Speaker and other members of Edo State House of Assembly.
