Hotkid said: “The funny thing is that I never knew there was depression. Now let me just tell you this story quickly. In early 2020, Asake was in my room, he said he was depressed. I didn’t understand.

“Asake is my birthday mate. He was sleeping in my room. Then he didn’t have an apartment. So he was just shuffling people’s houses. He was in my room one night and was like how long does he wanna do this. I was cheering him up. I didn’t know that my own depression was coming.

“That’s why I always say it is easier to give opinions when you are not in someone’s shoes. So, when I see people in some situations, I feel bad for them. Don’t judge. You don’t have any opinion. You are not perfect. It’s God that is helping you. Do you think the people you are judging are happy they are passing through that situation? Before I was like that but now I know better.”

Asake owes no royalty to ‘epp me’ police woman – Lawyer

Lawyer, Raphael Irenen, has asserted that the viral police officer, Helen Utabor, is not entitled to any earnings from Afrobeats sensation Asake.

Recall that the phrase “Epp me, epp me… “He dey carry me go where I no know,” became popular after a driver zoomed off with Utabor in 2022, she yelled the lines.

I Go Save, a well-known comedian, claimed that the injured cop was hit by a car while directing traffic in Edo and asked for help on her behalf.

There was outrage after the accident when I Go Save revealed that Asake had given her N5 million for medical care.

Many people thought the singer should have paid the cop royalties for lending her voice to his song “Peace be unto you.”

However, Irenen mentioned that the Nigerian Copyright Act grants copyright to six categories of works during her Monday appearance on Arise TV’s Good Morning Show.

He enumerated them as follows: writing, painting, music, broadcasting, sound recording, and audiovisual activities.

The attorney said that the viral video was an example of an audiovisual production.

When asked if Asake owes Utaboh royalties, Irenen simply replied,“Looking at the provisions of the law, the simple answer is No.”

“Copyright in an audio-visual work goes to the author. Copyright generally under the Nigeria Copyright Act goes to the author. That is Section 28 of the Nigeria Copyright Act.

“The video itself comprises the woman’s voice. It is quite reasonable to expect that people would advocate that she be compensated. But it doesn’t work that way.”

“The video was a spontaneous activity. If there was an agreement that stated the lady (Utaboh) would be entitled to something, royalties or she has certain ownership over the said video, that would have been different. But there was no agreement to that effect. The young man took out his phone and started recording”.

He added: “If you remove the lady’s voice, you make it a stand-alone item. Asake only used her voice alone. He did not use the video.”

In a tweet via his account, Irenen explained: “She is not entitled to any royalty accruing from the song. Though her voice was used/sampled in the record, she is not the owner of the video, from which her voice was expunged and used for the said song. Recall that a video was made where she was seen shouting ‘Epp me.’”

Asake: Entertainer of the year – runner-up

Twenty-eight-year-old Ahmed Ololade, widely known as Asake on the music scene, broke out in February 2022 after he got signed on Olamide’s YBNL record – and by extension U.S-based Empire Distribution. Asake had a lovely run in his first year of grabbing fame and stardom. He released his first album on YBNL, ‘Mr. Money With The Vibe’ in September 2022 and created several street anthems that include ‘Sungba,’ ‘Peace Be Unto You,’ ‘Terminator’ and ‘Organise.’

With the album, Asake cemented his position as an emerging Afrobeats’ global ambassador, captivating audiences across Nigeria, Ghana, and Togo and even earning him the coveted title of most streamed artist in each country.

The singer’s continued international success after the release of his second album in 2023 further underscores the enduring appeal of Afrobeats as the most exported genre of the year.

His dominance continued in the Top 10 most streamed tracks, with three of his hits from his second album on the imprint, ‘Work of Art’ – ‘Lonely At The Top,’ ‘2:30’ and ‘Amapiano’ – making the cut.

Asake stands firmly as runner up to the Entertainer of the Year, surpassing his record label boss’ achievements in 2023. His reign extended to the Gen Z demographic, with the star becoming the most streamed artist among Nigerian and Ghanaian Gen Z listeners.

His song ‘Lonely At The Top’ further cemented his popularity among Nigerian Gen Zs, topping the charts for their age group.

This infectious and monstrous hit single from his second album, ‘Lonely at the Top,’ emerged Nigeria’s longest-running number one song on the TurnTable Top 100, the country’s sole chart system that takes data from radio, TV and streaming platforms.

The superstar, whose love for his mother got him his stage moniker, Asake, began releasing music in 2017, but had his big break in 2022. He has continued to enjoy an unprecedented run between 2022 and 2023.

Making history as Afrobeats’ newest act to perform at London’s iconic 02 Arena with sold-out tickets to the entire 20,000 capacity, Asake ended 2023 on a big note after nabbing a Grammy nomination ahead of the 66th edition in February 2024.

His collaborations with Davido for the song, ‘No Competition,’ on ‘Timeless’ further shot Asake’s fame higher than many had imagined when he made his first outing in 2022.

At the 2023 Headies, Asake earned himself the highest nominations. At the 16th edition of the music awards, the YBNL signee created history by becoming the first musician to receive nominations for both ‘Best Male Artiste of The Year’ and ‘Next Rated’ at the same time.

Other nominations include Best Collaboration (‘Bandana’ with Fireboy DML), Digital Artiste of the Year, Album of the Year (‘Mr Money With The Vibe’), Best Street-Hop Artiste (‘Joha’), and Headies Viewer’s Choice (‘Sungba’ Remix ft. Burna Boy).
