“One day, I got to his house, then he asked me… This part burst my head. This is how he signed me. He said, ‘How are you, Asake?’ I said I’m fine. And he asked me, ‘Would you like to join YBNL?’

“You don’t understand, for somebody you look up to, somebody you respect, somebody you’ve been longing to see, to ask you that question. I told him that I’m ready. He said, ‘Go and think about it. Go and look for a lawyer.’ I said, ‘Baba, sign me now now now. I don’t want any lawyer. Because I love the YBNL family so much even from afar.”

She said: “Amapiano music is the core of it in my opinion. And just all of the influences from growing up like Rihanna and all the R&B girlies, R&B boys, pop girls. That type of influences I love bringing into my music.

“Something I really love in Afrobeats music is when I hear those step vocals that sound like a choir, almost. And I really love the way Asake uses it. I just always love the way it sounds. So, with the chorus of my song ‘Water,’ I incorporated it. Obviously, people can’t stop singing, they can’t get it out of their minds, which I love.”

  • Humility a waste of time, says Asake

Humility a waste of time, says Asake

Popular indigenous singer Ahmed Ololade, popularly known as Asake, has argued ego is being respected over humility.

He recalled how some people once took him “for granted” because he was “too humble.”

Speaking from experience, Asake said that when someone is egoistic, people feel the person is inaccessible and place more value on the person.

He said: “To me, humility is like a waste of time. People don’t appreciate it. At the end of the day, life is about your perception. That is how I think. It’s my world.

“I’ve been around people, that I tried to let them say who I am but they didn’t appreciate it. As an artist, if you come to somewhere, if you’re humble, they will take you for granted. But if you have ego, they feel like you’re not accessible so they will like you more. People would rather see what you’re doing than you showing them humility. So, just do what you need to do.”

Asake bigger, better artist than Rema – Daniel Regha

Controversial social media critic, Daniel Regha, asserts that Asake surpasses Mavin Records signee, Rema, as a more proficient artist.

The unapologetic commentator argued that Asake exhibits superior lyrical prowess, despite that Rema enjoys more significant publicity, owing to the influence of his record label boss, Don Jazzy.

He further claimed that 99 percent of Rema’s songs are “recycle lyrics”.

He, however, said his take was just an opinion, adding that no shade was intended.

Regha wrote: “Asake is a bigger artist than Rema, but Rema gets better PR thanks to Don Jazzy’s influence & that of Mavin Records. Lyrically speaking Asake has more meaningful songs; Rema 99% of the time recycles lyrics. The only thing they have in common is that both are still upcomers, that’s all. No shades.”

His criticism is coming on the heels of Rema selling out the 20,000-capacity London’s 02 Arena, joining Wizkid, Davido, Burna Boy, and Asake as the only African artists to have sold out the world’s busiest music arena.

The three Afrobeats stars, Kizz Daniel, Asake, and Chike, who recently became  Glo ambassadors, have explained  on the reason behind inking the deals.

Asake said joining other Glo ambassadors had been a childhood dream.

“It’s a great feeling becoming a Glo ambassador. I remember when I was growing up and going to school on the Island, I would see the big billboards of Glo ambassadors and I would wonder when my time would come. I had longed for it and thank God the dream came through,” he said.

Asake’s story is similar to Chike’s. Chike said he had always hoped that he got signed to Glo as an ambassador and “it’s a great feeling joining the long list of ambassadors.”

He said: “You know when I got into the industry and things weren’t happening at that time, I would see all these big names on Glo and I would wonder when my time would come. On my way to signing the deal with Glo, I remembered all those times and smiled that God’s time is the right time. It’s a good feeling being an ambassador,” Chike said.

Buga star Kizz Daniel believes Glo’s platform is an enviable height that most Nigerian entertainers strive to be on.

At the signing of the three Afrobeats stars on September 29, Globacom noted that the announcement of the three brand ambassadors was part of its celebration of Glo’s 20th anniversary.

A statement from Globacom further said it appointed the new ambassadors to project the power of youths and how much they could achieve with the right focus, passion and dedication that come from seeing others who have succeeded.

“This is very much part of our tradition as we believe the strength of a nation lies in the ability and potentials of its youth. The engagement of these three stars as ambassadors is meant to project the best Nigerians as models for younger people who are tirelessly aspiring to succeed. This is more important in an era where positive heroes and mentors are scarce and hard to come by,” it said.
