  • Aba explosion: Atiku gives N20m to victims

As Ikpeazu promises to offset medical bills of hospitalized victims

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate has donated N10 million to the victims of the pipeline fire which killed scores of people at Umuaduru and Umuimo communities, Osisioma Ngwa council area, Abia State.

Atiku, who was represented by his running mate, Mr. Peter Obi, said he was saddened by the incident and consoled the families of those who lost their lives.

“Our presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, is out of the country. He would have been here by himself; he insisted that we must come to sympathize with our people. We commiserate with the Governor, the people of Abia state, Osisioma Ngwa council and the families who lost their loved ones in the incident.

Continuing Obi said, “When we were riding to the community, the governor said the government should check the quality of pipes being used and how to secure the pipeline to avoid a recurrence. We will join hands to fix our land so that we won’t record such incident again”.

Gov. Ikpeazu, while expressing gratitude for visit and donation of money, pledged to offset the hospital bills of the victims and urged those who were yet to access medical attention to do so without further delay.

The governor also promised to help rehabilitate those who suffered losses in the incident to enable restart their businesses and directed the Commissioner for Health to ensure that the victims are taken of at the hospital.

“I want to seize this opportunity to appeal to those who ran away and those at traditional homes should come out to access medical attention. Let them present themselves to the hospitals. Those who have been rendered orphans and those who lost their properties and businesses will be assisted. We are determined to provide succor and help for those who are alive. We cannot replace everything, but we try to make the situation a little bit bearable.”

  • Obi is competent to be VP but… – Umahi

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi on Tuesday said that he was not against the choice of former Governor, Peter Obi as the running mate to the People’s Democratic Party, PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

Umahi stated this in an interview with journalists in Abakaliki, the state capital.

The governor has faced backlash since he led leaders of the party to complain against the selection process that threw up Obi as Vice Presidential candidate of the party with many people accusing him of sabotaging the interest of the Igbo nation.

But, Umahi while clearing the air, said he was only against the process and not Obi who he noted was very competent for the job.

He, however questioned how people from other regions will meet and take decisions that concerns me south east with the input of a single person from the region.

“We have never said that we are against Peter Obi but what we have said is that if six people can come together from five other regions and look at recommendations for the south east and no south east person is there, that is not good for us.

“We have never said that Obi is not good for us, we have nothing against Obi but we want when decisions that concern  us are being taken, we want to be part of that decision’, Umahi said.

The governor also expressed displeasure on the imbalance in the initial five man shortlist for the VP candidacy which had no person from Imo and Ebonyi State on it.

“Number two, the five names submitted, of course no governors in  south east  wants  to be Vice President; everybody wants to finish his tenure.  The Five names for VP should have been five names from the five south east states  but there was no name from Ebonyi and Imo states”

“I am a fighter of marginalization of Ebonyi people. If we are going to vote, we must be treated with equity. These are the issues; two names came from Anambra, one from Enugu and two from Abia. So, what is wrong in having someone from Ebonyi and then one from Imo?

These are the issues but there are not as terrible as is being looked at. I know that my people put me on social media saying so many terrible things about me but it doesn’t move me”

“We must sit down with the presidential candidate and say look if we work together, we must be part of the decision making . I am not talking about myself, I am talking about the leadership of the south east”.

“If six people can come from other regions to take decision and there is nobody from south east and our people think is right, so be it”.

The Governor, who said he has a good relationship with Mr Obi said he has no regrets on his actions in the aftermath of Obi selection.

“Nobody is against Obi. The leaders of Ndigbo are saying that when decisions are taken and you invite people from other regions, invite people from south east. They never issued any  statement and anybody from south east that is saying that my stand is not good, is not a human being because tomorrow is bigger than today”.

“If Atiku had just announced his running mate without other people from other regions seeing the list and making inputs or choices , we wouldn’t have been bothered because nobody chooses a VP for anybody; it is like a wife. But if other people were there, at least one person from south east should have been there. Secondly, Ebonyi state shouldn’t have been neglected even if we will not make the list because the choice is for the man”

“You remember that one of the reasons that Ebonyi man is not too comfortable with the issue of region is that we are afraid of further marginalization. So, these are the issues. Obi is my friend. You would have seen our pictures on the social media. Yes, he is my good friend and we have worked together very very well and he said something to me   ‘if I were you, I will be more bitter, I will make greater noise than you are making’.

“Obi understands. And let me give you one shocking news! I was told in the course of our meeting in Enugu that somebody asked Chekwas Okorie why is it that Igbo don’t vote for their Vice Presidential candidates and Chekwas told him that anyday the Igbo man chooses his Vice Presidential candidate, the Igbo man will vote for the Vice presidential candidate and if you check be it Ekwueme or any other, you will  find out that we have never voted along that line”.

“And I am very sure that in further decisions, the Igbo man must be called, that is just what we are saying. Nobody is against Obi and he is very competent to be VP but I alone cannot endorse Obi. So when my Chief Press Secretary issued a congratulatory message, the Leaders started calling me saying so you alone have made the VP. So I had to issue another statement to say look, I was not consulted. If that is my sin, I cannot repent”,he concluded.

  • ‘You are not fit to sit on National Peace Committee’

The Buhari Media Organisation (BMO) has hit out at the Catholic Bishop of the Sokoto Diocese Matthew Kukah for his involvement in the alleged endorsement of former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, saying he was longer fit to be part of the National Peace Committee led by former Head of State General Abdulsalam Abubakar for his partisanship.

The group accused the clergy man of openly engaging himself in partisan politics by leading other religious leaders to seek Obasanjo’s endorsement for the former Vice President who is now Presidential candidate of the PDP.

But Rev. FR. Kukah has said he only took part in a reconciliation process between Chief Obasanjo and how former Vice and not an endorsement process.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Cassidy Madueke, the group stressed that the Abdulsalam Abubakar-led committee is one that should be seen to be non-partisan because of the role it was meant to play in the run up to the 2015 election.

They aid; “We are surprised, like many Nigerians, to see Bishop Kukah in the company of the opposition candidate at a reconciliation meeting with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and later on claiming to be the strategic mind behind the reconciliation which we believe was targeted towards bringing the two parties together to fight the President Buhari administration.

“This is not expected of a clergyman who is seen in some quarters as the alternate head of the National Peace Committee. He has shown his bias and as such cannot be trusted to be non-partisan.”

While dismissing class that he was not aware of the political nature of the gathering, the group said “the clergy man was the key figure behind the reconciliation and did this knowing that Atiku was a PDP Presidential aspirant.

“And if it is true that Bishop Kukah is insisting that he was only exercising his right to free movement, we are also demanding that having shown his hand, he has no reason to sit on a panel that is meant to be non-partisan.”

Reacting to reports credited to Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal  that President Buhari is not in charge of government but only ruling the country by proxy, the group assured Nigerians that the President was fully in charge and in control of the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and anyone who is in doubt of this is in grave error.

The Buhari Media Organisation said it was.clear from.his utterances that Tambuwal was getting frustrated after failing go get the Presidential ticket of his party, describing him as a failed politician.

They alleged that due to his lack of confidence in himself, he depended solely on the support of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike for his failed presidential bid and having failed to realise his ambition, Tambuwal has now become a stooge of the PDP Presidential candidate Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, for whom he is ready to descend into any low.

They said: “We wish to note that Governor Tambuwal has not only failed to serve the people of Sokoto State diligently in the past three and half years but has, in his utterances, displayed crass ignorance on sensitive national issues.”

The Buhari group says it finds it objectionable that Tambuwal has sunk so low as to describe President Buhari as ‘’ruling by proxy,’’ when in actual fact he knows it as a fact that President Buhari is fully in charge of the country’s affairs, as can be seen in the numerous achievements his administration has recorded

“Perhaps the clearest evidence of Hon. Tambuwal’s failure as a politician and governor is that he has turned himself into an errand boy of his fellow contestant Atiku Abubakar and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party.

“We therefore advise the Sokoto State Governor to stop deluding himself about his party defeating President Buhari in the 2019 presidential election as Nigerians have already taken note of President Muhammadu Buhari’s commitment towards solving the myriad of problems confronting the country, and they are poised to re-elect him as president in 2019.”

  • Tambuwal, Makarfi pledge support for Atiku

Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal and former Kaduna State Governor, Ahmed Makarfi have pledged their full support for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Tambuwal and Makarfi were two of the aspirants that contested and lost the PDP presidential ticket to Atiku at the party’s recent presidential primaries in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The two politicians gave the commitment yesterday when the Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson led two other PDP governors to the Abuja homes of Tambuwal and Makarfi for consultations.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after a closed door meeting with the Dickson team, Tambuwal stressed the need for PDP to remain a strong united party, adding that the emphasis should be on the country and not personal ambition.

Tambuwal who observed that the country was being run by proxy said that Nigeria needed a president who would deliver effective governance.

The Sokoto Governor added that he was resolute in his decision to give his total support to Atiku in pursuit of victory for the PDP in the 2019 general elections.

On his part, Makarfi said although the 12 aspirants went into the primary election as contestants, the emergence of one of them was a collective victory for party.

Makarfi said he had a long standing political relationship with Atiku spanning many years and it that it was too late in the day for him to jettison that relationship over presidential primaries.

He predicted a resounding victory for the PDP in the 2019 elections both at the federal and state elections.

Governor Dickson together with Governors Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta) and Darius Ishaku (Taraba) hailed Tambuwal and Makarfi for their understanding and spirit of sportsmanship.

Dickson, who led the team, described Tambuwal and Makarfi as frontline politicians qualified enough to fly the party’s presidential flag.

Dickson, on behalf of other PDP Governors, commended the two former aspirants for displaying maturity before, during and after the presidential primaries.

The Bayelsa governor said the visit to the two politicians was part of the decision of the PDP to visit and interact with other presidential aspirants that lost the primaries, with a view to encouraging them as leaders of the party in their own rights.

Dickson who heads the Standing Committee on Reconciliation of the PDP, said that the party had commenced series of consultative talks with other categories of aspirants and leaders of the party in the bid to present a united front.

He stressed that the meeting with two former aspirants was borne out of the need to strengthen the PDP, to provide the requisite support for the candidate of the party for electoral victory.

Dickson said, “I am leading a team of the committee of governors to interact and compare notes with our brothers, Governor Aminu Tambuwal and Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

“They ran a great race and we are all proud of what they did and what they continue to do. We appreciate their statesmanship, we appreciate the way and manner they have been of help in consolidating the gains the party is making.

“This afternoon, as part of our decision to go round, visit, encourage and interact with all our party leaders, especially all those who indicated interest in the last presidential elections, we have held fruitful meetings.

“This is just the beginning of several interactions formally and informally that we are going to have with them and with several other leaders of our party.

“As you all know, they are very key players in the unfolding political scenario and we are all committed to reclaiming our country and building a new Nigeria”.

Dickson stressed the need for leaders of the PDP to close ranks and to hold regular talks as opposition politicians to reposition the PDP for electoral victory.

The Bayelsa Governor noted that as the nation moved towards the next election, the Indepedent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the security agencies had a responsibility to ensure the conduct of free, fair and credible elections in the country.

He urged INEC and the security agencies to be fair, adhere strictly to the rule of law, and to respect the rights of individuals in the next elections.

  • It‘ll lead to capital flight, recession, says Atiku campaign group

The Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign Organisation yesterday warned that the travel restriction placed on 50 prominent Nigerians by the government could lead to capital flight and drag the country back to economic recession.

In a statement, the organisation said the affected individuals are suspected of having property overseas and are involved in tax dodging or other alleged financial infractions.

The statement said: “Thus, we find it most undemocratic that in a nation governed by the rule of law, a President who swore an oath to abide by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria does this.

“If past events are to be the judge, these 50 individuals will conveniently be critics and opponents of the Buhari administration.

“This is nothing short of intimidation ahead of the 2019 elections. This is what the Buhari administration did in Osun where they froze the accounts of the Adeleke family and then illegally and clandestinely paid ¦ 16.7 billion to the Osun State government to facilitate daylight electoral robbery.

“To show how clueless this administration is, it included late former Chief Judge of Enugu State, Justice Innocent Umezulike, as number 30 on its travel ban list.

“The question Nigerians should ask is this: can an administration that is unable to distinguish between the living and the dead bring life to Nigeria’s economy?”

Stating that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees every Nigerian citizen freedom of movement and freedom of association, the Atiku camp insisted that this right cannot be taken away except by a court order.

“If the Buhari administration wants to curtail the rights of Nigerians, then they must go to court and obtain a court order. Anything short of this is unconstitutional and extrajudicial.

“This sudden dictatorial act brings to mind President Buhari’s comments for which he was condemned by the international community and by the generality of Nigerians”, the statement added.

In the light of the restriction order, the campaign organisation recalled President Buhari’s submission while delivering an address at the annual general conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) on August 26, 2018.

At that event, President Buhari was quoted to have said, “Where national security and public interest are threatened or there is a likelihood of their being threatened, the individual rights of those allegedly responsible must take second place, in favour of the greater good of society”.

The Atiku camp described the President’s position as a faulty interpretation of the constitution, adding that the statement also betrayed the dictatorial and authoritarian mindset of President Buhari; as only decides who and what threatens national security.

Continuing, the statement said: “It is a throwback to Buhari’s evil Decree Number Two of 1984 which criminalised truth telling if it did not please Buhari, proving that dictators can grow old, but they can’t grow into democrats.

“Under the Buhari administration, Nigeria has witnessed an unprecedented capital flight out of the nation to the extent that we are not even listed amongst the top ten recipients of Foreign Direct Investment in Africa in the latest ranking by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

“It is salient to note that we were number one under the last Peoples Democratic Party administration.

“Funny enough, the Buhari administration was unable to stop Abdulrasheed Maina, their financier, from leaving the country after he was illegally brought back by them and reinstated to the federal service with double promotion.

“It is precisely this type of draconian orders that have chased investors away from Nigeria and it is precisely why Nigerians will chase this recession friendly government away from power on February 16, 2019, so we can begin the job of getting Nigeria working again”.

  • Wike declares support for Atiku

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has declared his support for Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar for 2019 elections.

He spoke yesterday at the Government House, Port Harcourt, during a special thanksgiving service for the successful hosting of 2018 PDP National Convention.

His Special Assistant, Electronic Media Simeon Nwakaudu quoted the governor as revealing that he promoted the candidature of Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal at the convention.

He, however, added that he has accepted the party’s choice as the way forward.

Wike said: “I supported the Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal fully. I have no regrets for my support for Tambuwal.

“But the party has made a choice and as a loyal party man, I stand by the choice of the party. I will support His Excellency Atiku Abubakar to victory in 2019. That is what is called party loyalty.”

Wike said the All Progressives Congress (APC) has failed Nigeria, adding that Nigerians must work diligently towards sacking the President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

“We must put our heads together to ensure that this bad government is sacked.  We must ensure that this bad government goes in 2019,” the governor said.

He said after the thanksgiving service, Nigerians must head to the fields to work for the PDP victory in 2019.

The governor noted that the PDP would win in Rivers State despite the machinations of the APC-led Federal Government.

He added that he would complete his mission in Rivers State through a resounding victory in 2019.

On the successful hosting of the National Convention, Wike noted that he stood his ground because of the Rivers State’s economy and the fact that the state remains the home of PDP since 1999.

The PDP National Chairman noted that after the party’s national convention, its leadership has been involved in fence-mending to bring all groups to work for victory in 2019.

He said Atiku is the best candidate to drive the country to growth and prosperity.

“APC will be finally buried in February 2019,” he said.

Secondus thanked the government and people of Rivers State for hosting the convention.

In a sermon, Apostle Zilly Aggrey said the PDP is right to thank God for the successful hosting of its national convention, noting that it was a platform for greater success.

Rivers State PDP Chairman Felix Obuah said despite obstacles, God ensured that the national convention was the best ever.

  • Sons of malice

It was a mockery of a familiar scripture. “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.” So Atiku Abubakar and Olusegun Obasanjo could sit together, after the firestorm of laughter a few years ago. They now see themselves as sons of God because they sat together to fulfil Atiku’s ancient ambition and pursue Obasanjo’s grudge. Both grudge and ambition embrace in the enmity of Muhammadu Buhari. In pidgin English, we call it jiga belle. Where is God here but bad blood, a coalescence of the sons of malice.

So one said “I dey laugh o” and the other lashed back with “I dey laugh too o.” It was exciting headline fair for newspapers. When both foes folded into friendship, one thing was especially missing in the Abeokuta setting: laughter. Both miens bowed in frowns as though it was no happy moment, except Bishop Oyedepo, whose face kindled with a doubtful holy halo.

Others present were Bishop Kukah, Gumi and, of course, the familiar Obj acolytes of Bode George, Ayo Adebanjo, et al. Adebanjo, the expiring politician as fuddy-duddy, once called Obj a whited sepulchre. So, what a necromantic hug he had with Obj. An Adebanjo, a nonagenarian, embracing Obj the corpse?

Obasanjo clearly needed Atiku to save him from his self-spun scorn, from the disaster of his political party, the ADC. Its first litmus test was Osun, and Obj’s party was a yawning no-show. The Owu chief has collapsed into silence since he boasted he would craft an alliance into a party that would faze Buhari out of the throne. He needed Atiku as a prop, so he won’t fall facedown. His face is already down. The Owu chief has crashed, his body parts all over the floor like glass shards. Atiku is pretending to help him put them back together.

The Owu chief also wants to pay back Buhari for snubbing him. He the Owu chief, the ebora. He who, in an air of remorseful royalty, tore his party card to enthrone him. He who campaigned and teamed up with his enemies, including his nemesis like Asiwaju Tinubu, in order to earn him a furry path to victory. Yet, Buhari dared to toss him aside. That is the megalomania of the Owu chief. He forgets two things. One, Buhari would have won without him. He came on board when victory flashed in the horizon. He has little electoral value. They made him a superfine passenger in the campaign, a flattery he could not know. Two, that his pedigree as kingmaker has always made him a little lower than an angel. Under Jonathan, he felt pooh-poohed. Yar’Adua never played servile to him. Buhari, a junior in the army, forgot to inflate him with the deserved salute.

Atiku, the man he foreswore in the name of the Almighty to never forgive, suddenly turned Obj into a tender soul. This is Obj born again indeed. The man who never forgave anybody unless they lost their offices. Ask Okadigbo in his grave. Ask Wabara about his disgrace. Ask Audu Ogbe, who is back to grace as minister. The same Obj is now rewarding an arch foe by promising him the biggest office in the land. He called Atiku our next president. This is malice as desperado.

This is no forgiveness. It is opportunism. The presence of clerics did not even give it the air of a divine blessing. All three were not there on behalf of the Ancient of Days but to settle ancient scores. Gumi comes from an old, even atavistic warfare with the Buhari clan. So, cancel the love of the people from his so-called reconciliation. Bishop Kukah has not hidden his regret over the sacking of his beloved Jonathan and his abhorrence of the probe of that era. He once asked the government to “move on.” Bishop Oyedepo loved Jonathan and he hardly accused his regime even on the pulpit of corruption while drumming up support for him and welcoming him to Canaanland. He loved his time as the president’s pastor.

There is a wistfulness to these holy presences. Holy men in scripture have never been known to be perfect, and they have made mistakes from Abraham to Jonah, even Peter and self-confessed Paul. Hence Paul warned us not to heed even if they or an angel teaches what was not written. “Brethren, pray for us,” he once pleaded. So, in that gathering, we had the cleric, the money bag, and the politician. Where is the hope? I don’t know how they want to manage the optics if they say to their faithful that they are not partisan.

Hence Bertolt Brecht, in his play Mother Courage, wrote, “Here they sit, one with his faith and the other with his cash box. Dunno which is more dangerous.”

Obj also highlighted the virtue of Atiku as a business man. Some are saying that he will do well there because he is one of the great men of business today in the land. I like more elaboration on this. I want those who make this claim to explain to us if he made his money the same way business men like Gates, Fajemirokun, Dangote, Odutola, Ojukwu (the rebel’s father) or Dantata made their money. We want to know if he doubled money with a cutting-edge imagination or by taking advantage of the footloose rules in corporate Nigeria. Is he a racketeer as the Buhari crowd calls him, or a manager? Or are they just tarring him as the candidate of corruption fighting back? It will be instructive to hear Atiku speak on how he will curb corruption. Waiting!

Again, Atiku will have to free himself from all the scandals: Siemens, PTDF, Haliburton, et al. Not just the scandal but the perception, which is even more potent. He might be innocent, but the public has its arbitrary court where judges and jury are on the street. If he does not want to brandish his mercantile credentials as his virtues, we can drop those and look elsewhere for his strength in 2019. Is there a correlation between those scandals and his wealth? This is election season and we need to scrutinise and let no one bamboozle us. Many Nigerian wealthy men are not classic geniuses of commerce but carpet baggers and opportunists. It is no qualification for turning a poor country into a commercial behemoth.

Few business men have done well as presidents anywhere. Trump is riding on the steam of Obama economy. Even Trump has just been exposed as a carpet bagger who defrauded his way into his billions by tax subterfuges. He is being investigated. The other businessman as US president, Herbert Hoover, presided over The Great Depression leaking jobs and joy. Roosevelt, a soldier, succeeded him and brought back the boom. Clearly Buhari has not shown himself to be a Roosevelt in turning the economy around. But being a businessman is no sure-fire ticket to success. The US founding fathers ignored the wealthy man John Jay, who thought his wealth would win over his peers and make him the country’s pioneer president. They picked George Washington, the soldier-statesman.

Atiku has also defined himself, probably partly in response to my column last week, by saying he is a living candidate while Buhari is dull. Buhari is anaemic for sure, especially on camera. But in camera, those who know him say he turns the ribs with his jokes. But Atiku is no better. His face is like what Americans called their Soviet counterparts in the Cold War era: doll within doll. His face, even his gait, is like an ignited mannequin. Like the character in Jerzy Kosinsky’s novel, Being There.

Peter Obi, for all his feminine voice, gives character to the pair. The choice is curious though. Obi brings nothing to the ticket in a geopolitical sense. If Atiku picked an anonymous Obi from the street of Aba, he was going to sweep the southeast anyway. Again, this is Obi, who could not deliver his governor candidate in the last poll in Anambra State. Hence, I called him a statesman without a state. Atiku has ceded the Southwest. With Northwest and S

outhwest off his plate, he may not have a prayer for victory. Unless, that is, an earthquake event tilts it for him. Nigeria does not have earthquakes though. Just tremors. And tremors do not bring down the house.

  • The rejected stone

Next year’s General Elections, particularly the presidential election, is beginning to become all the more interesting with the entrance into the race of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the flag bearer of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) will be in grand delusion if it underrates the capacity of the former vice president to worm his way into the hearts of Nigerians. Well, if you like, you may call them gullible Nigerians. While you reserve the right to so refer to them, it should also be realised that ‘gullible’ is only an adjective. Both the gullible and the not-too-gullible are entitled to one vote each once they are of voting age. And, at any rate, is today’s world not being governed largely by gullibility? If not, what would a Donald Trump be doing in the White House in America? Coming back home, why would a governorship contest between APC’s cerebral Gboyega Oyetola and PDP’s governorship hopeful in the hotly contested Osun State governorship election, Ademola Adeleke, renowned for his entertainment prowess, almost have gone the way of Adeleke but for providence?

For now, we can only console ourselves by hoping that the other front runners in the October 6 PDP National Convention which produced Atiku as winner would renege on their promise not to back whoever won the primary. But if they remain in the PDP fold, then the opposition party is likely to produce a formidable side to reckon with when the election comes. Make no mistake about it; those who ensured Atiku’s victory at the primary knew what they were doing. It was high-wire politics both from within the PDP and from without. To snatch the presidency from Buhari is too big a role for Lilliputians like Senate President Bukola Saraki. Atiku is more like it. That was their reckoning; and everyone of them in the race seemed to have accepted it that way because there is a common enemy that they all want out of power: Buhari, for very obvious reasons. Many of them who have survived the government so far cannot be sure of being lucky if President Muhammadu Buhari returns.

But that is not to say that the Buhari government has not played into their hands several times. It would however be a tragedy of monumental proportions if the PDP gives the ruling APC a good run for their money during the presidential election, or even has a better showing in the election outright. Indeed, it is not good enough if we have a repeat performance of Osun governorship election at the presidential election next year. I mean the APC has to win the election, if it must, convincingly at first attempt. The party will have itself to blame if PDP gets so close as to warrant a rerun. It would be worse for the APC to be crying foul while the PDP is running away with the trophy. Yet, if any of these frightening scenarios plays out, President Buhari should accept responsibility. It would amount to sheer scaremongering if a ruling party is the one weeping that the opposition rigged it out.

Trust former President Olusegun Obasanjo, he has swiftly endorsed Atiku, his one time political foe. What this endorsement of his former vice (yes, vice!) tells us is that in politics, there are no permanent friends or permanent foes, but permanent interests. We know that Obasanjo and Atiku had both gone their separate ways even while the latter was Obasanjo’s deputy in the Obasanjo administration (1999-2007). As a matter of fact, some account had it that Obasanjo prostrated for Atiku to get his second term when it seemed that his return ticket was under threat. Yet, it was Obasanjo that routed for Atiku while the latter was governor-elect in his Adamawa State. But, Obasanjo, who many believe neither forgives nor forgets, has not failed to demand his pound of flesh from Atiku whenever the opportunity presents itself.

Only a few months ago, Obasanjo had vowed that nothing would bring him close to Atiku again, at least politically, and that as a matter of fact, God would not forgive him if he did. This was a vow to which Atiku too replied that if his former boss had any issues with his creator, he should go sort them out with Him. Obasanjo seemed to have eaten his words and has now anointed Atiku as his presidential preference in next year’s election. The former president even waxed biblical in pardoning Atiku. He said with Nigerians voting for him, next year, “It will be with the hope or assurance of a Paul on the road to Damascus Conversion. After all, change and conversion are of man. I believe that with a contrite heart, change is possible in everybody’s life and situation.”

Again, just as this piece was being put together on Friday, I stumbled on a World Bank report that ranked Nigeria 152nd out of 157 countries. I know the government is going to react to this negatively rather than do introspection to see where its economic policies in particular require tweaking. That was the way the immediate past Goodluck Jonathan administration dismissed all such reports instead of doing something to change the situation for better. I wonder why government officials suddenly become paranoid about such reports when what is required is to do the rightful. But, the World Bank is not the only institution that is saying that something is wrong. The Emir of Kano, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, has warned that Nigeria may remain the world’s poverty capital even as former United States envoy John Campbell parroted what has always been known about Nigeria being Africa’s troubled giant.

What one would expect is informed reaction to such statements and assertions from the seat of power. For instance, two take-aways from Chief Obasanjo’s statements when Atiku called on him centred on ethnicity and the economy; stupid! Again, Obasanjo said nothing new. These have remained sore points of criticism of the Buhari administration since its inception. What one expects is for the president’s aides not to dismiss these with a wave of the hand because they reflected the government’s style for long. Presidential aides or government officials who want to take on these allegations should tell us what has changed, instead of making it look as if the allegations are entirely baseless.

Moreover, APC should dwell more on its own achievements rather than keep telling Nigerians that Atiku is corrupt. They have been hearing that for years. This is sad to say though; but the point is that not many people see the government’s anti-corruption war in the same light as they saw it in 2015. Not a few have the feeling, rightly or wrongly, that there is little difference among the parties corruption-wise.

Honestly, this is not about sentiments. Notwithstanding my reservations about Obasanjo, the APC cannot want us to believe that his views now count for nothing. When he tore his PDP membership card about four years ago and pitched his tent with the Buhari team, the event was widely celebrated by the then opposition party and the then presidential hopeful’s handlers.

Nothing I have said foreclosed anything happening because, as they always say, ‘it is not over until it is over, especially in politics. President Buhari and the APC still have about four months to change the tempo of the game. They still have an ample opportunity to step up their  performance in order to secure a straight, incontrovertible victory at the polls.

We need no one to tell us that this might jolly well be Atiku’s last opportunity at the presidency.  He will be 72 next month; and if he loses the election, he has to wait till 2023, by which time he would be about 76 years old. Buhari became president at about the same age (72). But, going by the new mantra of not-too-young-to-run, a 76- year-old aspirant could be considered too old to run for the country’s number one seat by 2023. If Atiku sees this as his last chance, he would put everything into it. So, unless a miracle happens, the next elections would be tough. It is one in which virtually everyone concerned would put in their all to secure victory. If anything, Atiku is a veteran in the country’s political arena; he understands the game. Not only that, he also has deep pockets and he would spend as if spending is going out of fashion. Atiku has probably attained all that he craved for in life; fame, wealth, influence. Perhaps the only thing after his heart is the presidency. He would do everything to get it.

At this juncture, what I expect the APC to do is to collate all the criticisms against it; distill them and provide credible answers/solutions to them, irrespective of whether the claims are true or false; it is all about perception. The government could be swearing that certain things are not the way they look; if Nigerians are not sufficiently persuaded, whatever the government says will amount to nothing. This is where the Buhari government has to be careful. It should stop talking to itself; it should as a matter of fact listen more because that is the way it would not delude itself that there is no cause for alarm when in fact, nothing is under control. Just as I said after the Osun State governorship election, an election that the ruling party should win hands down at the very first ballot should not become a subject of controversial rerun just on account of delusion.

Like Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State, shortly before meeting his political waterloo at the last governorship election when his dream of choosing his successor crashed under his very eyes, many Nigerians will be in great pains if APC, by omission or commission, allows the PDP that Nigerians rejected less than four years ago to become the cornerstone, and so soon. Most poignantly, that would not be a good emblem for the Buhari government’s anti-corruption crusade.
