  • Atiku condemns Adamawa bombing, says terrorists are enemies of civilization

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned Tuesday’s  suicide attack on a mosque in Mubi, Adamawa State, while Muslim worshipers were performing their afternoon prayers.

Reacting to the incident in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday, Atiku described the killing of innocent people as senseless, thoughtless, purposeless, incomprehensible and, above all, egregiously wicked and ungodly.

A statement by his media office offered said sympathies to the families of the victims, lamenting that Boko Haram insurgents have made the killing of innocent people a way of life.

Atiku added that the insurgents were pursuing a nebulous cause and committing atrocities against humanity, which he said were against the tenets of Islam.

Describing terrorists as enemies of civilisation who have no slightest regard for the sanctity of life, the former Vice President said he was saddened by the fact that the people in the Northeast are living under constant threats of death and mortal fear.

According to him, “these communities are now captives of fear who have to look over their shoulders as they leave their homes for work, school or for places of worship”.

Atiku called for increased vigilance and human intelligence, adding that the local people should be given support on how to spot threats and how best to stop these heinous acts from occurring.

While praising the security forces for their sacrifices and for doing their best despite severe limitations, including confronting an unconventional enemy, Atiku advised that strategies should be strengthened or reviewed so as to keep pace with the terrorists’  changing tactics.

  • 2019: Shekarau joins race for PDP’s Presidential ticket

A former governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has signified his intention to contest for the presidency in the 2019 general elections under the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Shekarau, who is also the immediate past Minister of Education, said in a letter made available to newsmen on Monday, stated that his decision to seek for PDP’s presidential ticket was informed by clarion calls from Nigerians and after wide consultations.

“As you may be aware, for quite some time now, since after the 2015 general elections, there have been various calls made by individuals and groups from many quarters, nationwide, urging my humble candidature for the contest of the presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the next general elections, due in 2019.

“I strongly believe that the people are doing so out of their conviction of contentment and satisfaction based upon the modest successes recorded while I served as the Governor of Kano State (2003 to 2011), and also as a Minister of Education (July 2014 – May 2015).

“In response to these calls, and in view of the seeming intricacies and the boundless complexities involved in such a national assignment, I have consulted across the geopolitical zones and different interest groups, who examined and appraised the issue and advised me accordingly.

“I am pleased to say, based on these wide consultations, that I am better informed and convinced that participating in the democratic process of serving humanity goes beyond party affiliations/boundaries, and also beyond just winning an election.

“I have therefore decided to accept the clarion calls, and will in due course and in accordance with the guidelines of my party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), offer my humble self for the contest of the presidency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria during the forthcoming 2019 general elections,” Shekarau said.

With the declaration, Shekarau had joined the likes of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governor Ibrahim  Hassan Dankwambo of Gombe State, former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi and former Senate President, David Mark, among others who were reportedly seeking PDP’s presidential ticket.

“As a youth friendly leader who thinks and understands the feelings of youth, I urge them to give me the chance to make their dreams possible,’’ Atiku said.

Speaking in own capacity, Fabiyi said that Atiku had consistently showed care and concern about the plight and issues that had to do with youths.

He further said Atiku was one of the major jobs creators in the country and that the youths were the major beneficiaries.

  • Enough of senseless killings – Atiku

Enough of senseless killings – Atiku

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has condemned Tuesday’s sectarian crisis in Adamawa, which claimed 14 lives, including that of Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) Spokesman in the state, Mr Sam Zadock.

Abubakar, in a statement by his Media Office in Abuja on Wednesday, also condemned similar crisis in Kaduna and other places that led to avoidable loss of lives.

He expressed “deep embarrassed and utter shock’’ of the continuing cycle of violence, revenge and counter-revenge by ethnic warriors and militias in the country that had led to needless waste of precious human lives.

He noted that the reckless disregard for the sanctity of life was not only disturbing, but showed the failure of local leaders to manage differences and grievances.

The former vice president said that bloodshed could never be the solution to grievances.

“Our common humanity is greater than our ethnic and religious differences”.

He added that the frequent resort to violence was inconsistent with the teachings of citizens’ religions about the sanctity of life.

Abubakar stressed that no society could achieve peace and happiness when love was replaced with violent, destructive hate and bigotry.

He called for a “cool headed” approach to conflict resolutions instead of incitements to violence by ethnic and religious leaders.

He also called for increased vigilance and prompt response to early signs of developing violence or conflicts in order to nip such crises in the bud.

While praising the efforts of security personnel and their sacrifices, Abubakar called for improved strategies and the use of human intelligence to foil mass murderers before they strike.

He condoled with the Zadock family, families of the other deceased and the PDP in Adamawa over the loss of their loved ones.

Lassa fever: Atiku calls for emergency call desks at health facilities

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has advised the Federal Government to establish emergency call desks at strategic health facilities to address the rampaging Lassa fever in the country.

Abubakar in a statement issued by his Media Office on Thursday in Abuja also advised government to ramp up on the sensitisation of the public about the disease.

“It is equally important that government partners with the private sector and medical research institutions towards ensuring that vaccines are formulated.

“They should partner to come out with vaccines that can combat and eventually wipe out some perennial diseases inclusive of Lassa fever which recurrence pose a threat to our public health,” he said.

Abubakar advised that every household should endeavour to be enlightened about the disease and how to prevent it.

He warned that the fatality figure on the trail of the outbreak of Lassa fever was becoming alarming, as the disease was spreading across states.

Recent media reports indicated that the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has recorded 16 fatalities and 107 suspected cases of Lassa fever infection.

The report also indicated that the disease had spread to 10 states.

Abubakar, however, sympathised with families who were victims of the outbreak of the disease.

He expressed optimism that Nigeria would overcome the “fangs of the outbreak just like it did with the dreaded Ebola outbreak.

“The resurgence of the Lassa fever is unfortunate and it is saddening that some families have lost dear ones to the recent outbreak of the disease,” he said.

Abubakar applauded the efforts of health workers in stemming the scourge of the disease.

He noted that they were like soldiers waging a war in which unfortunately some died in trying to save the lives of others.

“Our health workers who are in the front line of viral and microbial attacks are deserving of our support and recognition.”

He paid tributes to Drs Abel Sunday Udo, Ali Felix and Idowu Ahmed as well other health workers who were infected and died in the course of treating Lassa fever patients in Ebonyi and Kogi states.

Atiku condemns burning of Falae’s farm

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the burning the farm belonging to a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Chief Olu Falae.

Falae’s oil palm farm, located on the outskirts of Akure, Ondo State, was burnt down on Sunday by suspected Fulani herdsmen

In a statement released by his media office in Abuja on Tuesday, Atiku said that arson is a punishable offence under the law and that when the crime is aimed at destroying a private investment, it adds the additional penalty of economic sabotage.

“It is a reprehensible act of economic sabotage to wilfully set ablaze any person’s property and investments.

“As a statesman who has worked tirelessly for this country, Chief Falae deserves a quiet and peaceful retirement and not this lot that has been characterised by kidnapping and other vices including this arson”, the statement added.

Atiku called on the police and other relevant security agencies in the country to launch an investigation into the crime and ensure that the culprits are brought to book to serve as deterrent.

  • ‎APC: Only court can stop Fayemi

‎APC: Only court can stop Fayemi

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has described Monday’s White Paper indicting former Governor Kayode Fayemi as “a demonstration of executive recklessness by Governor Ayo Fayose.”

The party stressed that neither Fayose nor his government has any power to bar Fayemi or any other individual from holding public office.

Fayose had set up a judicial commission of enquiry to probe Fayemi’s administration notably to unravel how Fayemi allegedly embezzled N852m SUBEB cash loan obtained from Access Bank.

Fayemi kicked against the composition of the panel in court, sitting partisanship of members who were allegedly PDP members and some civil servants that served under Fayose’s authority, which made their membership suspect to a fair hearing.

The Access Bank appeared before the panel to exonerate Fayemi, explaining that Fayemi never stole that but that it (the bank) took back the loan to its vault when the state government failed to firm up agreement on loan repayment.

Nevertheless, the panel turned in its verdict holding Fayemi culpable and, subsequently, Fayose raised a panel to come up with a White Paper, which yesterday banned Fayemi and his Commissioner of Finance, Dapo Kolawole, from holding public offices for 10 years.

But in a reaction by the Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatunbosun, the party described both the panel and White Paper as a kangaroo stunt to nail Fayemi, saying the verdict would not stand in the face of illegality that went into the exercise.

Olatunbosun argued that the Supreme Court has since settled it in law that only courts of law can stop any aspirant/candidate from running for any political office and not any administrative or judicial panel.

Olatunbosun said: “All Nigerians know that Fayose is recklessly lawless and cannot survive in societies where the law works.

“His so-called White Paper is not only laughable but also a disgrace to all Ekiti people home and abroad with the way that Fayose has taken ignorance, vendetta and debauchery to a ridiculous level because we knew all along that this is what Fayose wanted to do.

“We had expected his Attorney General, if he knows his onions, to have advised him that only a competent court of law can bar Nigerians from holding public office under the Nigerian Constitution.

“A situation where Fayose assembled PDP members and pliable civil servants as a panel with a strict directive to indict Fayemi at all costs and thereafter issue a White Paper banning him from holding public office cannot hold water in a society where the law works.

“With the way he is conducting himself desperately to stop Fayemi from holding public office, we are convinced that Fayose is seriously going through a political haemorrhage  and therefore his resorting to political desperation and unconstitutional means to nail our leader and a serving Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by any means possible.

“Neither Fayose nor Ekiti State Government has the power to bar or prevent Dr Fayemi or any other citizen from holding public office but a competent court of law. Such wishful thinking cannot stand judicial scrutiny and we advert Fayose and his pitiable undertakers to read the Supreme Court judgment and Atiku Abubakar in similar matter.”

APC spokesman said that by his “so-called White Paper that cannot over-rule the Supreme Court judgment as a precedent, Fayose has demonstrated recklessness, lawlessness and display of executive rascality arising from his ignorance of the law, constitution and total disregard for the rule of law”.

He added: “It is now glaring that despite Fayose’s empty boasts daily that Dr. Fayemi is a paperweight politician who is not popular at home , the governor’s latest action has proved that the reverse is the case, as this barbaric action to halt the political career of a shining Ekiti star has shown that Fayemi is in league of  nightmare Fayose has to contend with.

“It is an irony that Fayose who is supposed to be banned from holding public office because of the plethora of criminal  and financial misappropriation cases hanging on his neck is the one unilaterally banning somebody who held public office as governor without any blemish and is currently holding that of a Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and has performed excellently well as shown by the ‘Award of Public Excellence’ trophy bestowed on him by credible corporate organisations.

“We expect someone occupying such an exalted position of a governor like Fayose to be properly briefed and educated on the limitations of his powers as the head of the executive arm of government primarily to formulate policy and implement laws rather than interpreting the law and worst still, assuming the position of a judge in a matter involving him as a party.

“We are not going to lose any sleep over a biased political report by a panel of PDP members set up by a PDP governor for the purpose of framing up our leader as a way of settling political scores.

“This is executive recklessness and political rascality taken too far by Fayose and his kangaroo panel. We wonder where he got the power to bar a leading member of the opposition in a democracy.

“We wish to assure our party members and the good people of Ekiti State that the so-called White Paper recommendation by Fayose’s kangaroo panel is not worth more than the paper on which it is written and this shall be challenged in a court of law and we are confident that this shall be quashed because there is no legal precedent or basis for it in the history of our country.

“We also plead with Nigerians to bear with Ekiti people in this moment of our governor’s lawlessness that has negative implication for the integrity of Ekiti people in choosing their leader.

“We also wish to remind Fayose that his immunity will expire in October and must be prepared to resume trials on his many criminal cases, including those pending in various courts.”

  • Atiku congratulates Secondus, says APC is enemy of Nigeria

Atiku congratulates Secondus, says APC is enemy of Nigeria

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as the enemy of Nigeria, saying it would take a united and coherent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to sack the APC government in 2019.

Atiku stated this in a congratulatory message to the newly elected national chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus and other officials elected at the just concluded national convention of the party.

The statement, released by his media office on Sunday said the immediate challenge before the newly elected national officers of the PDP was to run an all-inclusive administration where the various interests within the party can find accommodation.

He added that Nigerians are looking up to the PDP for unity in the party, “because it takes a united and coherent PDP to sack the APC government in 2019″.

The statement said, “Our great party, the PDP, is, again, at the threshold of an historical moment. Just as we mobilised to put an end to prolonged military rule in 1999, the people of Nigeria at this moment look up to us to rescue the country from the mis-government of the APC.

“Arising from our elective congress, there should be no victor and no vanquished. Our paramount attention should be focused at sacking a government that deceived the people of Nigeria into power by promising our youths three million jobs annually, only to deliver three million job losses annually; a government that is repeatedly living in denial of its commitment to restructuring. We must be united to take power back to where it belongs: the Nigerian people.

“As members of the PDP, we must take pride in being able to hold a national convention and in so doing live up to the bill of being a truly democratic political party. Our major opponent has not been able to achieve this feat and I join millions of our party members to congratulate the Ahmed Makarfi-led national caretaker committee.

“I understand that there are complaints and grievances from many of the co-contestants in the congress. I am aware that the PDP has a mechanism for addressing such complaints and it is important that such avenues of redress are made available for members to explore without let or hindrance. Meantime, I call on all our leaders and members to rally the new executive for the sake of our party, Nigeria and the good of our people”.
