  • Israel blames Palestinians for cancellation of Argentina friendly

Israel on Wednesday blamed Palestinian pressure for Argentina’s cancellation of its World Cup  warmup against Israel, a match that had been set for contested Jerusalem.

The Palestinians accused Israel of using the fixture and the participation of Barcelona ace Lionel Messi to underpin its disputed claim to Jerusalem, which U.S. President Donald Trump recognised in 2017 as Israel’s capital in a break from international consensus.

The Israeli Embassy in Argentina confirmed the cancellation on Twitter, saying it was saddened by the news following the threats directed at the players.

The embassy expressed its hope that the players would come to Israel soon.

“The threats and provocations directed at Lionel Messi, which logically aroused the solidarity of his colleagues and fear of playing the friendly, are no strangers to the daily life of Israel’s civilian population whose sporting stars, to put it simply, have been on numerous occasions the targets of violence and attacks,” the embassy wrote.

“The friendship between Argentina and Israel, which will soon celebrate its 70th anniversary, is not about a football match. The democratic country and plural state (composed of Jews, Muslims and Christians), will always eagerly await the chance to receive one of the stars of Argentine sport.”

The match at Jerusalem’s Teddy Kollek Stadium was to be Argentina’s last before they kick off their World Cup campaign in Russia on June 16.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Argentinian President Mauricio Macri on Tuesday night to ask him to persuade the team not to cancel their visit, but a diplomatic official said the chances of salvaging the fixture were very slim as Macri can’t force the players to come to Israel.

“Macri has some influence, but it’s their decision and they’re afraid to come in the current climate,” the official added. “Israel is still pressuring them to reverse the decision.”

In a second conversation Tuesday night, Macri told Netanyahu he had no influence on the matter.

Culture and Sports Minister Miri Regev received updated from the game’s producer, Danny Ben Naim, on the efforts to reverse the Argentinean decision.

The minister was informed that since Argentina had announced their arrival for a friendly with Israel, different terror organisation had started sending messages to the players and their family members with explicit threats, as well as images and videos of children’s bodies.

Addressing claims that the Argentinean team refused to arrive because of the decision to move the game to Jerusalem, the sports minister said: “That’s nonsense which legitimizes terror and the BDS campaign.

Unfortunately, we have trojan horses in the Knesset who supporting terror.”

President Reuven Rivlin said in response to the cancellation, “This really is a sad morning for the fans, including some of my grandchildren, but there are values that are even bigger than Messi.

“I’m very concerned in the politicisation concealed in the Argentinean move. Even in the most difficult times, we made every effort to leave considerations which were not pure sport out of the soccer fields, and it’s a shame the Argentine team failed to do it this time.”

The visit of twice world champions Argentina has attracted huge interest among Israeli fans, mainly because of Barcelona great Lionel Messi’s planned participation.

    Palestinians celebrated the cancellation.

In Gaza, people cheered and in Ramallah in the West Bank, the Palestinian Football Association issued a statement thanking Messi and his colleagues for cancelling the game.

  • Barcelona announce South Africa friendly

FC Barcelona will play a friendly match against South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns in Johannesburg on Wednesday, the club said on Thursday.

The match will be part of celebrations to mark 100 years since the birth of Nelson Mandela.

It will be played at the FNB Stadium, formerly known as the Soccer City Stadium, where Spain won the 2010 World Cup.

The 2010 squad featured Barca players like Gerard Pique, Sergio Busquets and captain Andres Iniesta, who struck the only goal in their 1-0 win over the Netherlands.

“FC Barcelona has always professed its admiration for Nelson Mandela, one of the greatest figures of the 20th century.

“He had after 27 years in prison went on to become the first democratically-elected president of post-apartheid South Africa from 1994 to 1999.

“Mandela represented the struggle for freedom and equality in the country, and played a huge role in unifying the racially-divided society.

“It is precisely this kind of spirit with which FC Barcelona has always been identified,” a statement on the club’s website said.

Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, but it appears the match has been brought forward because of the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia.

The competition holds from June 14 to July 15.

The friendly is now sandwiched between Barca’s penultimate Liga game away to Levante on May 13 and their final game at home to Real Sociedad on May 20.

Ernesto Valverde’s side clinched a 25th Liga title, the King’s Cup on and are bidding to become the first team since 1933 to complete a Spanish top-flight season without losing a game.

  • Barcelona president fuels Griezmann speculation

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has been in contact with Antoine Griezmann’s agent amid reports the Atletico Madrid striker is set to join the Spanish champions.

Frenchman Griezmann has a 100 million euro (88 million pounds) release clause in his contract and Spanish media reported that Barcelona are ready to pay it.

“We are analysing the season and we will see what we will do with ins and outs.

“I have bumped into him (Griezmann) occasionally in the Balearic Islands. I have not spoken to him this year but I did speak to his agent in October.

“With (Atletico Madrid President Enrique) Cerezo I have spoken about a lot of things, but not about this,” Bartomeu told radio station RAC1.

Barcelona are looking to strengthen their squad after winning the Spanish title 12 points clear of second place Atletico with three matches left.

They drew 2-2 with Real Madrid on Sunday in a tempestuous Clasico despite playing the second half with 10 men after Sergi Roberto’s dismissal, and are unbeaten in 42 league matches.

“We are very happy with (Coach Ernesto Valverde’s) work and that of the players.

“When they sent off Sergi Roberto, I suffered a bit thinking about the second half, but then we went on to have a great game,” Bartomeu added.

Barcelona also won the Spanish Cup this season but were knocked out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage by AS Roma after squandering a 4-1 first-leg lead.

  • Nostalgic Iniesta leaves Barca after 22 years

It was tearful moment for Spain International and Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta on Friday as he announced he was leaving the club after 22 years.  He however underlined that he will not be moving to any other club in Europe.

‘We arrived 25 years ago in our family car,’ he said of his trip to Barcelona’s La Masia youth academy with his parents and grandparents for a trial at the club.

‘Now they are here with me as I say goodbye. That journey was emotional but it was also terrible because then I ended up here on my own and I was only 12 years old! But evidently it was worth it.’

There were tears as he thanked his team-mates who packed the press room to watch him say goodbye. Only Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez of the first team regulars were absent. It was when he mentioned his team-mates that the tears first began to well up in his eyes.

There was no confirmation of his move to China at the end of the season but he did confirm that he would not be opting for a Premier League swansong despite interest from Manchester City and his former manager Pep Guardiola.

He said: ‘All the options that are not in Europe are possible. But in Europe, no, because I have always said that I will not play against Barcelona.’

Iniesta was asked about France Football’s recent admission that they probably owed him a Ballon d’Or. He made it clear the ball on the pitch was all that mattered to him.

He said: ‘There was no apology necessary. Everyone likes personal prizes but it was never that important for me.

‘I learned, when I first arrived here, that there is a ball and it is very important to take care of it.’

Asked about Barcelona’s future without him, he said he believed they could continue winning. And joked that he would return in three years to play again.

Iniesta’s press conference was watched by his team-mates on Friday, but Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were both missing.

The Argentine has a history of avoiding emotional public goodbyes, having famously skipped Pep Guardiola’s back in April, 2012.

  • La Liga: Atletico held by Betis, Las Palmas relegated

Atletico Madrid failed to break down Real Betis in a 0-0 draw on Sunday which further reduced their slim chances of catching FC Barcelona at the top of La Liga.

Elsewhere, Las Palmas were relegated after a crushing 4-0 home defeat by Alaves.

Diego Simeone’s Atletico moved 11 points behind FC Barcelona with four games remaining and the unbeaten leaders need one more point to win the title.

With the Europa League semi-final first leg match at Arsenal on Thursday in mind, Simeone rotated key players and Betis tried to take advantage.

Javi Garcia missed two excellent chances and Cristian Tello struck the post for the visitors, who extended their club record run of games without conceding a goal to six.

However, Atletico’s defensive resilience ended Betis’ run of six wins in a row as they recorded their 11th consecutive home clean sheet.

Aissa Mandi headed a Fernando Torres effort off the line and Saul Niguez struck the bar as Atletico also came close, but neither side could earn a victory.

“The team is heading into Thursday’s game really well,” Simeone said. “We made important changes and the players responded. I had to rotate to ensure we had fresh players.”

In a mostly-empty stadium at Canary Islands, Munir El Haddadi struck twice with Alvaro Medran and Ruben Sobrino also netting as four second-half goals from Alaves consigned Las Palmas to relegation.

Paco Jemez’s side have 21 points from 34 games and are 13 short of Levante in 17th with only four matches left and they will join bottom side Malaga in the second division next season.

“Beyond the fact that this is a sad day, because we go down to the second division, it’s also sad because of the result. We went down in the worst way possible,” said Jemez.

“We are as sad as ( the fans ). We didn’t want this moment to arrive but we will keep working because there are still a lot of things to fight for.

“We must be responsible with the image of the club.”

Alaves’ triumph confirms their safety, sitting 13th with 41 points from 34 games.

It is an impressive feat masterminded by Abelardo Fernandez who took over in December with the Basque side bottom of the table.

Malaga beat Real Sociedad 2-0 and Espanyol won 2-0 at Girona to damage their Catalan rivals’ dreams of finishing in a Europa League spot.

The result left Girona ninth and Espanyol 16th in the standings, 11 points clear of the relegation zone.

Las Palmas have gone 12 matches without a victory and this was their fifth straight defeat.

  • Injured Aguero should be ready for World Cup – Guardiola

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will be out of action for up to five weeks but he should be ready for the World Cup with Argentina, manager Pep Guardiola says.

The 29-year-old, who has scored 21 English Premier League goals for Manchester City this season, is recovering from knee surgery having not started a match for the last six weeks.

When asked on Friday if Aguero’s season with Manchester City was over, Guardiola said: “Here, yeah. It’s four or five weeks (out). We will try and get him ready for the World Cup.

“He is in Barcelona right now. For the first part of the rehabilitation, he is going to be there.”

Aguero is expected to be a key figure for Argentina, who play their opening World Cup match against Iceland on June 16.

Manchester City were crowned English Premier League champions last weekend and Guardiola wants his team to break records before the end of the campaign.

They could finish with the most points, most wins and most goals in a single English Premier League season.

Now, the Spanish manager remains keen to keep his players motivated ahead of Sunday’s clash with Swansea City.

“In the past when I won the league early at FC Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona, the next few games were not good,” Guardiola added.

“But a good argument to keep going is the records. It would be nice to finish good in terms of good feelings.

“The important thing is to win the title. But, maybe the records can help us (to) be focused against the clubs fighting to avoid relegation.”

Manchester City’s opponents Swansea are currently 17th in the league and four points clear of the relegation zone with five matches to play.

  • Neymar vows to work harder to be ready for World Cup

Injured Brazil striker Neymar has targeted May 17 for a return to training, vowing to work harder than ever to be ready for this year’s World Cup in Russia.

The Paris St Germain player, who joined the club from Barcelona in August, had an operation on his foot after being injured in a French league game against Olympique de Marseille on Feb. 25.

He has been receiving treatment in Brazil and said he expects to be training exactly a month before the five-time champions play their World Cup opener against Switzerland on June 17.

“I get my final exam, if I’m not mistaken on May 17 and then I’ll be free to play,” he told reporters at a news conference in Sao Paulo.

“I had an exam last week, it is all perfect, evolving well, so I hope that continues so I can get back as soon as possible…

“I am having treatment every day and from the moment I start training I am going to work harder than I ever worked because this is a dream that’s coming up, it’s a World Cup.

“I’ve waited four years for this chance, its close and I hope to get there in great shape.”

Neymar played for Brazil at the 2014 World Cup, but missed the catastrophic 7-1 semi-final defeat by Germany through injury.

Brazil struggled in the two years immediately after their home World Cup, but have since rebounded and go to Russia as joint favourites with bookmakers along with Germany.

Neymar, who joined PSG for a fee of 222 million Euros ( $275 million ), said he was apprehensive about kicking a football again after almost three months out.

“I expect to go ( to the World Cup ) in a better state than before,” he said.

“Of course, doubts exist and I feel them too sometimes, but that’s normal for a guy who has had the first surgery of his career. It’s very difficult for me not playing and not training.”

“I have to work even harder, but I am going to have enough time to arrive in form for the World Cup, to prepare.

“It was horrible getting injured, but I am more rested, that’s the upside. We have to see the positive side of things.”

After opening their Group E World Cup campaign against Switzerland, Brazil face Costa Rica on June 22 and then Serbia five days later.

  • Barca records 39 La Liga games unbeaten!

Barcelona have set a new La Liga record of 39 consecutive games unbeaten thanks to Saturday’s 2-1 win over Valencia.

Luis Suarez opened the scoring at Camp Nou on 15 minutes when he picked up Philippe Coutinho’s threaded ball and sidefooted past Neto at the right-hand post.

Valencia responded well to falling behind and enjoyed numerous opportunities to get back into the game, with Goncalo Guedes and Rodrigo Moreno coming close on several occasions.

However, Los Che could not get the ball over the line and were punished when Samuel Umtiti then doubled the hosts’ lead on 51 minutes, heading home Coutinho’s corner.

Valencia did manage to halve the deficit three minutes from time, Ousmane Dembele carelessly bringing down Jose Gaya for a penalty which Dani Parejo slotted beneath Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

However, Barca hung on to secure all three points and, with victory, break the Spanish top flight’s unbeaten record in style.

Real Sociedad previously held the record, notching up a 38-game unbeaten run from April 1979 to May 1980.

Coutinho’s two assists helped Barceona beat Valencia 2-1 and take another huge step towards the title. His first pass for Suarez to open the scoring was one of the best of the season.

He could still win a league and cup double this year with Barcelona. How differently their Champions Leaugue adventure might have ended if he had been on the pitch and not ruled out because Barça could not force him out of Anfield before the season started.

The Nou camp landlords may have crashed out of the Champions league no thanks to Roma, but the good run at home in the La liga continues with hope of clinching another title in sight. Barca will next head away to keep a date with Celta de Vigo on Wednesday.

  • Roma upset Barcelona, Liverpool demolish City

Roma staged a stunning comeback from 1-4 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions quarter final pairing with Barcelona to beat the former champions and the Spanish leaders 3-0 and qualify for the semi-finals on goals aggregate.

Bosnia’s Edin Dzeko started Roma revival in the 6th minute and in the second half, De Rossi scored via a penalty and Manolas completed the coup de grace with a stunning header in the 82nd minute.

The unexpected turnaround turned the fans at Stadio Olimpico into wild jubilation.

Liverpool at Etihad Stadium completed their demolition of Manchester City, cruising to the semi-finals on 5-1 goal aggregate, after surviving a nightmarish first half, in which City scored their only goal in two minutes.

The victory marked the first time since 2008 that Liverpool would qualify for the semi-final of the competition.
