  • Barca a win away from successive La Liga title

Barcelona moved to within touching distance of the La Liga title with a comfortable victory at Alaves.

After a goalless first half, midfielder Carles Alena, 21, opened the scoring with a close-range finish following a sweeping attack by the visitors.

Barcelona were awarded a penalty soon after following a VAR handball review and Uruguay’s Luis Suarez converted.

Victory means Barcelona will be confirmed as champions on Wednesday if Atletico Madrid lose to Valencia.

The reigning champions are 12 points clear of Atletico, who have five games remaining.

While Atletico could potentially still finish level on points with their title rivals even if they slip up on Wednesday, Barcelona will win the title by virtue of a better head-to-head record between the two sides.

The result may mean Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde rests players against Levante at the weekend before next week’s Champions League semi-final with Liverpool.

Valverde perhaps already had one eye on the first leg against Jurgen Klopp’s side on Wednesday by opting to start Lionel Messi on the bench at Alaves.

The Argentina forward came on just after an hour and went closest to scoring his 34th league goal of the season with a powerful strike from a tight angle that was tipped over by Alaves goalkeeper Pacheco.

  • Barcelona set to sign De Ligt as Ajax agreement nears – sources

Barcelona are close to reaching an agreement to sign defender Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax, club sources have told ESPN FC.

The La Liga leaders have the situation “under control,” according to the sources, and not getting the deal over the line now would provide similar levels of disappointment to last summer when they were turned down by Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann at the last minute.

Juventus and Bayern Munich are also keen on De Ligt but one source has said the Netherlands international “only wants to listen to Barcelona.”

The same source added that “as was the case with Frenkie de Jong, Ajax will warn [Barca] if any other clubs make a serious move for [De Ligt].”

De Ligt’s agent Mino Raiola is in regular contact with Barca, who value the signing of De Ligt on the same level as the arrival of his Ajax teammate De Jong, who will join the Catalans for €75 million in June.

Barca, though, remain keen to respect the protocol put in place by Ajax, who still have a lot to play for this season and want their players to remain focused on sporting objectives.

Ajax are level with PSV Eindhoven at the top of the Eredivisie table and will face Willem II in the Cup final.

They also qualified for the Champions League semifinals for first time since 1997 with De Ligt scoring the winning goal as they knocked out Juventus in Turin.

Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu told ESPN FC in an exclusive interview he knows what will happen with De Ligt in the summer “but now is not the moment to talk about it.”

The club are expecting to pay somewhere close to €80m to get the deal over the line, which sources have said is possible even though they have to be careful with how they manage their finances this summer.

A number of players will leave Camp Nou in the postseason to fund the moves for De Jong, De Ligt and potentially another forward and a left-back. Sources have told ESPN FC the club are looking to make as much as €300 million in sales.

The Spanish champions are well covered in the centre-back positions.

Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet have been in great form this season while Samuel Umtiti has just returned from injury.

Jean-Clair Tobido, a January signing, is also tipped to have a big future in the game.

Thomas Vermaelen, though, will leave for free in the summer and Barca do not plan on exercising an option to make Jeison Murillo’s loan deal permanent, creating space for one new defender.

  • Solskjaer: Man United rebuild could take years

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted he faces a rebuilding job at Manchester United that may take years after a humbling Champions League exit to Barcelona.

United were out-classed by the Spanish giants, who eased to a 3-0 win at Camp Nou thanks to two goals from Lionel Messi.

It stretches their wait for the Champions League semifinal to eight years and Solskjaer says he has work to do to get his team back to that level.

“We know there’s work to be done,” said Solskjaer.

“I’ve said all along this isn’t going to change overnight and the next few years are going to be massive to get to the level of Barcelona.

“We’re on with the job and we’ve spoken to the players about it as well.

“We need to create an environment of top, world-class attitude every single day. We’ve got a lot of good players to work with but as I have said, we have a rebuilding job. It started with coaches, players and of course one or two additions in the summer.”

Looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg, United started well against Barcelona and could have taken the lead after just 24 seconds when Marcus Rashford hit the bar.

But any hope was extinguished when Messi scored twice in four minutes in the first half — the second squirming under David De Gea’s body and into the net.

“That’s unfortunate with goalkeepers, when you make an error it can get highlighted and that’ll be remembered,” said Solskjaer.

“He made some fantastic saves and his contribution to the team is good but sometimes that happens in football.”

Both Rashford and Scott McTominay had early chances as United started on the front foot but after Messi scored with Barcelona’s first two shots on target the tie was all but over.

Philippe Coutinho added a stunning third in the second half, curling a shot beyond De Gea from 25 yards.

“We did well to get here and the quality of their finishing was absolutely outstanding,” said Solskjaer.

“We started well in the first five minutes and we felt we’ve got something here and then in four minutes they scored two goals.

“The attitude was right but we were fighting against a good team.

“Messi is an exceptional talent. Him and Cristiano [Ronaldo] have been the best players in the world for the last decade and he showed why we think that and why this team have won so many Champions Leagues.

“If you give him space and time around the goal he’ll create and score goals. He’s a fantastic player.” (ESPN)

  • Barcelona reach Champions League semi-finals with Messi exhibition against Manchester United

Lionel Messi produced another masterful Champions League performance to knock out Manchester United and fire Barcelona into the semi-finals in a 3-0 home win on Tuesday.

It was Barcelona’s first time of reaching the semi-final of the competition in four years.

Barca, who toyed with United for the majority of the encounter, sealed a 4-0 aggregate victory and will meet either Porto or Liverpool in the last four.

Messi had failed to score in his last 12 quarter-final appearances, but he settled his side’s nerves after a bright start from United.

Collecting a misplaced pass from Ashley Young, Messi curled the ball into the bottom corner in the 16th minute.

The Argentine then pounced on another lapse from United’s defence four minutes later to win back possession high up the pitch and fire a shot from outside the box.

The ball then slipped under the arms of visiting keeper David de Gea.

Philippe Coutinho finished off a therapeutic win for the Catalans, after three quarter-final failures in a row, by curling into the top corner in the second half.

United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s greatest night as a player came at the Nou Camp.

But after losing the first leg at Old Trafford 1-0, his team needed to become the first side to win a European game there in 31 matches in order to progress.

They clung to the hope of another famous European escape act after last month’s miraculous 3-1 win at Paris St Germain and made a strong start as Marcus Rashford hit the crossbar in the opening stages.

They also survived a scare when a penalty awarded to Barca for an apparent foul by Fred on Ivan Rakitic was overturned after a VAR review.

Yet their hopes were soon extinguished when Young was caught in possession on the left wing and Messi seized the ball.

He scurred across the pitch and held off more United defenders before bending a superb shot past the outstretched De Gea.

The Spanish goalkeeper was left embarrassed for Messi’s second goal as the Argentine’s tame shot crept under his body.

United looked down and out and Messi nearly dealt them further pain before halftime by sparking another quick break, but this time De Gea thwarted the Catalans.

De Gea was taunted by Barca fans in the second half, which turned into a procession for the home side and the out-of-form Coutinho turned up the party atmosphere with his sensational strike.

The nearest United came to finding the target after the break came when Barca keeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen turned an Alexis Sanchez header around the post late on. (Reuters/NAN)

  • UCL: 5 reasons Manchester United could upset Barcelona

It is hard to write off Manchester United as they slug it out with Barcelona tonight in the Camp Nou for the spot in the Semi-Finals despite losing the first leg 0-1.

The Red Devil may beat Barca for the following reasons:

    1.    No doubt, Barca is the dominant force in Spain, where they are heading towards their fourth La Liga title in five years, but their Champions League fortunes tell a different story. Not since they last won it four years ago have they gone past the stage they find themselves now. Therefore, United may hope that previous failure and current expectation, especially in light of Real Madrid’s recent monopoly on the European Cup, weighs too heavily on their mind.

    2.    The return leg at Camp Nou is similar to the round of 16, Manchester United will have an away fixture in the return leg. This had helped them to defeat PSG based on away goals and similarly, Barcelona could also be put under pressure in their home game.

Manchester United will have a clear idea as to how many goals to score in the return leg to progress and this could help them in devising their game plan. We have seen Barcelona falter at this stage in the previous seasons and United will hope for something similar tonight.

    3.    Barcelona has not been at their best in the Champions League in the last few years. The side lost in the quarterfinals in each of their last three Champions League campaigns. It is on record that the Catalan side lost a three-goal lead to Italian side Roma last year while in their previous two campaigns Barca were ousted by Juventus and Atletico Madrid.

    4.    With Paul Pogba in form, he is by far the most improved player under Solskjaer’s management up till now. What Solskjaer has done is given Pogba the free role he thrives in while Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic have taken over the defensive midfield mantle. If Pogba is in the mood, United will win the midfield battle that is already intriguing on the cards.

    5.    David De Gea has lately looked unsure in his decision making but make no mistake, he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and on his day, nothing goes past him.

De Gea however has a Lionel Messi in the best form of his life to stop when he takes the field in the Champions League tonight. The Spaniard, who has kept 100 clean sheets in his Premier League career up till now, will need to deliver one hell of a performance over two legs to lead United to the semi-final of the Champions League this season.

  • Super Falcons, Barcelona Ladies get Assisat Oshoala boost

Super Falcons and Barcelona ladies forward Assisat Oshoala has returned to training a development which has put smiles on the faces of technical crew of both teams.

The three time African Women footballer of the year suffered a hamstring injury on the 17th of March in Barcelona’s game against Atletico Madrid.

It was speculated then that the injury would keep her out of the game for at least five weeks, but the club interestingly confirmed on their twitter handle Tuesday that she has returned to light training and is likely to get into full action sooner than later.

Oshoala who missed Falcons last set of friendly matches in Spain was seen in pictures released by the club jogging alongside teammates even as they intensify training ahead of their clash against Madrid CFF on Wednesday.

Barcelona Ladies, who are occupying the second position on the Primera Division Femenina log behind table leaders Athletico Madrid, are going into Wednesday match fresh from a 6-0 demolition of Malaga last Saturday.

Oshoala who joined the Spanish side from Chinese Super League Dalian Quanjian F.C has made over five appearances for the sides with five netting five goals. Although the 2015 BBC Women footballer of the year may not be on parade against Madrid tomorrow, there is however strong believe that she might get back into competitive in a pending tie against Sevilla at the end of the month.

  • UCL: Shaw own goal gives Barcelona advantage over Manchester United

Barcelona will take a 1-0 lead over Manchester United into next week’s second leg of their Champions League quarter-final after a 12th-minute Luke Shaw own goal gave them victory at Old Trafford on Wednesday.

Sergio Busquets found Lionel Messi with a clever ball into the area and the Argentine carved out space on the left to deliver a lofted cross to Luis Suarez at the back post.

The Uruguayan’s header deflected off the shoulder of a scrambling Shaw and beat David De Gea to give the visitors the lead.

And although the linesman initially flagged for offside, the goal was given after a VAR video review.

United’s best chance of the first half fell to Diogo Dalot but the Portuguese made a mess of a fine Marcus Rashford cross, heading harmlessly across the goal from close-range.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team had struggled to get a foothold in the game during the opening 45 minutes but they were much improved after the break.

United applied plenty of pressure without creating any clear chances.

Barcelona could have added a second had Suarez not fired into the side-netting from a promising position after a clever through ball from Nelson Semedo.

  • Barcelona increase La Liga lead to 11 points as Messi set new record

Lionel Messi set a new La Liga wins mark while Barcelona increased their commanding lead to 11 points with a 2-0 victory over 10-man Atletico Madrid at the Camp Nou on Saturday.

Diego Costa was given a straight red card in the opening half-hour for something he said to referee Jesus Gil Manzano, putting Diego Simeone’s men a man down in what was a must-win game to keep any realistic title hopes alive.

Atletico produced a gutsy second-half display, expertly shackling Barca but the Catalans finally found a way past the visitors’ outstanding goalkeeper Jan Oblak with a superb curling shot from Suarez in the 85th minute.

Moments later Messi sealed victory and quite probably the league title with an irresistibly cool finish into the net and Barca’s fans jubilantly chanted “champions”, crowing at their surely unassailable lead at the top with seven games remaining.

Atletico realistically needed to win at the Nou Camp for the first time since 2006 to stay in the title race and they played with ambition and intelligence in the opening stages, keeping the ball for long periods and depriving Barca of space.

But they were rocked by Costa’s moment of madness which killed their early momentum and left them with little choice but to defend for the remaining hour of the game.

Striker Costa reacted angrily to not being awarded a foul after being tackled by Jordi Alba and gave a long verbal response to the referee, who to his disbelief pulled out a red card.

Costa had to be shepherded off the pitch by Barca’s Gerard Pique as he struggled to control his temper while his teammates Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez earned bookings for venting their anger over the decision.

Atletico coped superbly with the setback and numerical disadvantage, controlling the space for the majority of the game.

Messi still carved his way through the middle of the pitch on two occasions, creating openings for Suarez and himself but both South American forwards were thwarted by the titanic presence of Oblak.

Atletico naturally had limited opportunities down the other end but were not far from finding a goal when Antoine Griezmann picked out Rodrigo from a free kick but the midfielder headed over the bar when Gimenez was stood behind him, in a better position.

Diego Simeone’s side could not last the distance, however, and as their legs inevitably tired, Barca’s attacking quality made the difference.

The win marked the 335th in La Liga for the Argentina international, passing former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas on the all-time list.

The defending La Liga champions now have 73 points from 31 matches, while second-placed Atletico remain on 62.
