Ododo is best man for the job, says Bello

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello yesterday described the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Usmsn Ododo, as the best man for the job.

The governor returned to his native Ebiraland to campaign for the former Accountant-General, who he said will surpass his achievements.

A large crowd of party faithful and supporters converged on Okene, where Bello raised Ododo’s hand and called for endorsement by the natives.

Some chieftains of opposition parties defected to the ruling party at the rally.

Excited at the crowd, thd governor, who also tendered his stewardship, thanked the people for their support.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu for his quality leadership and unflinching support for Kogi State, adding that the party in the APC chapter will not disappoint him on November 11.

Bello said:  “This unprecedented crowd is an indication that the APC has won. We have no opposition in Kogi Central and in Kogi State. We did it before, we will do it again come November 11.

“As an administration, we have done our best by uniting the people of the State. We met, on assumption of office, fault lines of disunity, ethnicity and injustice. But under our administration, we have been able to mend all the fault lines and Kogi State is now united.

“We have created employment. We built infrastructure. We empowered our women and youth like never before under any administration in the State since creation. We have made fairness, equity, justice our priority.

“I can assure you that we are leaving Kogi State better than we met it for the incoming administration. Alhaji Usman Ahmed Ododo is a capable hand. He is competence personified. Let’s support him to build on the legacies we have created.”

The governor assured that the elections would be violence-free, urging them to come out on poll day to cast their votes for APC.

He said would his the ground running, provide jobs and foster unity, if elected.

Bello urged security agencies to continue the good job they had been doing in the state and clamp down on criminals before, during and after the elections.

The Minister of Steel Development and Director General, Kogi State APC Governorship Campaign Council, Shaibu Abubakar Audu, said APC will retain the state.

He said: “This crowd gathered here today is unprecedented in the political history of Kogi State. In my years of following the politics of Kogi State, without mincing words, this is a game changer, a final nail on the aspiration of the opposition political parties in the State.

“The vision of Alhaji Usman Ahmed Ododo, which has attracted this crowd is to provide agricultural revolution across the State, with massive crops produced across the senatorial district. We are here to pursue a Kogi agenda and not an ethnic agenda. The incoming administration will build on the legacies of Governor Yahaya Bello in massively providing infrastructure and empowerment for the people.

“The Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is interested in the revitalisation of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant. He has asked that Ajaokuta be declared an industrial park. The President is also interested in ensuring that the free trade scheme across Nigeria is reviewed so that Ajaokuta can be declared a free trade zone.”

Audu added: “Once that is done, it would create massive jobs; 500,000 direct and indirect jobs will be created for our teeming youths. This is the reason the President is concerned and has said we cannot afford to outsource a critical State like Kogi State to a hostile opposition party. Kogi State will remain an APC State.”

The Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mohammed Jamiu Asuku, said the people of Kogi Central had, by the mammoth crowd, testified to the great achievements of Bello.

He said:””The mammoth crowd is a testimony that indeed Governor Yahaya Bello has done more than enough for the people of the State. The mammoth crowd is a testimony that indeed the APC has chosen an acceptable candidate.

“The people of Kogi Central have, by today’s turnout, resolved to vote massively for Alhaji Usman Ahmed Ododo and Comr. Salifu Joel.”

A community leader, Hajia Halima Alfa, commended Bello, describing him as a prophet well respected at home.

She said:”I have never seen this kind of crowd in Kogi State in my entire political life, since I started attending rallies in 1999. Kogi Central is no doubt APC. History will no doubt be made come November 11, as the district will produce the highest vote for the APC.”

Mohamed Idris, son of former Governor of Kogi State, Ibrahim Idris, who publicly declared his support for the APC candidate, urged the people of Kogi Central, and the state at large, to follow the man and party that know the road, insisting that there was no vacancy in Lugard House for opposition parties.

Ododo said he would not fail Kogi, urging the people to vote for him.

He said: “I will continue to deliver on the mandate of our party for the development of Kogi State and the wellbeing of our good people. We are serious about meeting the yearnings and aspirations of our people. We have been doing that under my mentor, Governor Yahaya Bello, and we will continue to do so.”

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Commissioner of Police, Haruna Garba, yesterday said investigation was ongoing on the alleged attack on Governor Yahaya Bello’s motorcade.

Garba had on Sunday told a news agency that unruliness was responsible for a clash between Bello’s security details and military men at a checkpoint.

Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, had claimed of an alleged assassination attempt a few kilometres from Abuja, which the governor had refuted.

Kogi guber poll: No room for ethnicity, says Bello

    • Ododo: I stand for unity, progress

Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has said that politics of ethnicity is dead in the Confluence State.

He said this yesterday in Ayingba, Kogi East District, where chieftains of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and African Democratic Congress (ADC), defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Indigenes of local governments making up the district trooped out to welcome the APC governorship candidate, Usman Ododo, to the palace of the monarch, who prayed for his success at the poll.

Excited at the crowd at the senatorial rally, Bello cautioned the people against ethnicity, stressing that tribal politics had no place in this time and age.

He said: “Ethnic politics is selfish interest. Igala agenda is about job creation, development, and prosperity. Don’t be deceived. The APC will win a landslide. Victory will be ours at the election. Alhaji Usman Ahmed Ododo is a refined gentleman with cognate experience in public service and in politics.

“On assumption of office, we met a state divided along ethnic and other fault lines. We have been able to cement all those fault lines. Today, issues of ethnicity have been buried. Fairness, equity, and justice have replaced mediocrity, and ethnicity.”

Bello added: “We have raised youths and women across board. We have built and distributed projects, infrastructure and empowerment across board. So much has been achieved in the State and we cannot afford to go back to our dark days.”

The Director-General, Kogi APC Governorship Campaign Council, and Minister of Steel Development, Shaibu Abubakar Audu, said the only agenda for the APC was the ‘Kogi Agenda,’ adding that Ododo would build and consolidate on the Bello’s legacies.

He said: “The only agenda for the APC is the Kogi Agenda. The party has the interest of the whole state. Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo has a vision for the development of the entire State. He will build and consolidate on the legacies of Gov Yahaya Bello.

“We are proud today that Kogi is the most secured State in North Central Nigeria. The APC will provide massive jobs for our teeming youths through the agricultural revolution. The APC is working on expanding the capacity to be able to produce several agricultural produce, particularly in Kogi East.”

Audu added: “I urge you to support the APC and Alhaji Ododo. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who appointed me as Minister of Steel Development, is interested in the vision and success of Kogi State through the development of Ajaokuta Steel.

“This will enable the provision of massive jobs for the entire youths of our dear State. He has asked that we do not hand over the State to a hustler government or to an opposition government. The President is concerned about the State and has said we cannot afford to handover a strategic State to the opposition.”

The Chairman of APC in Kogi State, Abdullahi Bello, expressed satisfaction with the massive turnout and enthusiasm displayed by the people, urging them to sustain the tempo till poll day.

The lawmaker representing Kogi East in the National Assembly, Senator Jibrin Echocho, urged the people of Kogi East who had yet to come into the APC fold, to embrace the party.

He said elections are won on the strength of party structures.

Audu said: “Let me appeal to our people to be passionate with the APC. Our candidate is marketable. Elections are won based on party structures. The people of Kogi East voted APC in the general election. We cannot afford to do otherwise in the forthcoming election.

“Governor Bello has laid a solid foundation in infrastructure, human capital development across the State. His achievements have done the major part of the election. Let’s all join hands in ensuring collective victory for the APC.”

The Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Edward Onoja, who urged the people  to vote for continuity, cautioned against sentiments.

He said elections are about political parties and not tribe, religion or region.

Ododo said his aspiration was about the people, progress and unity of the State.

He stressed: “Let me appeal to the people of Kogi East. Let’s build a united and stronger Kogi State, which we all can be proud of. Let this election be about our people, development, unity and prosperity. It is my fervent appeal that I’m ready to be a servant leader with no barrier,” he said.

He thanked the governor for his outstanding achievements and promised to build on the legacies.

Ododo said it would be counterproductive for Igala to play ethnic and minority politics.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu for his outstanding leadership and commitment to the growth and development of Kogi State and Nigeria.

  • Bello, Meseko and battle for APC NWC seat

Bello, Meseko and battle for APC NWC seat

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has resolved the crisis between Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello and former House of Representatives member Duro Meseko over the position of Deputy National Publicity Secretary zoned to the Confluence State. Deputy Editor Emmanuel Oladesu reports.

The Deputy Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Duro Meseko has urged party faithful to rededicate themselves to the platform.

He called for commitment and loyalty, saying that the ruling party should consolidate on its achievements.

The former House of Representatives member was among the six new officers inaugurated by the National chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, as members of the National Working Committee (NWC) .

The inauguration ended the intrigues, protests and horse trading involving the various interested parties in Kogi, Abia and Cross Rivers States.

Other officers sworn in are  Deputy National Chairman, North, Ali Bukar Dalori (Borno State); National Vice Chairman, North West, Garba Datti Muhammad (Kaduna State); National Legal Adviser, Prof. Abdul Karim Abubakar Kana (Nasarawa State); National Welfare Secretary, Donatus Nwankpa (Abia State); National Woman Leader, anf Mary Alile Idele  (Edo State).

The ceremony was scheduled for last Thursday at 10am. However it could not hold following protests that greeted the new appointments by Governor Bello, Senator Florence Ita Giwa and other stakeholders from Abia and Cross Rivers.

The protesters had stormed the party’s national secretariat to register their disapproval of the ratification of some of the appointments from the respective states.

Stakeholders from Abia State, led by Stanley Ohajuruka, in a petition addressed to the national chairman, rejected Nwakpa. Also, protesters from Cross Rivers State, led by Bukkie Okaigbe, maintained that a replacement for Dr Beta Edu who is Minister of Humanitarian Affairs should have come from Cross Rivers, and not Edo state. The choice of Nwankpa and Idele were contested.

But none of the crises in the two states came near to that of Kogi State, where the deep-seated rivalry between the two factions (Bello and James Faleke factions) were reenacted.

Two lists were forwarded to the NWC from the two camps to fill the vacant positions of National Deputy Publicity Secretary and National Organizing Secretary (North Central Zone), allocated to the state.

The Kogi state executive of the APC. which had ratified Yahaya Ade Ismail as Deputy National Publicity Secretary and Isiaka Musa as the Zonal Organising Secretary for North Central, laid claim to the fact that the two nominations followed due process and was done in accordance with the party’s constitution.

However, the names of Meseko and Ikani Shuaibu Okolo as the Deputy National Publicity Secretary and Zonal Organising Secretary surfaced.  The two nominees were said to have come from Faleke, backed by President Bola Tinubu.

Meseko and Okolo got the nod of the national leadership as the duo were named as replacements in the NWC vacant offices zoned to Kogi State and North Central zone.

The decision however,  did not go down well with Governor Bello, who stormed the national secretariat and demanded that the appointments be reversed. Bello, accompanied by senators from the state, House of Representatives members and the Minister of Steel Development, Shuaibu Audu, arrived the  party office around 8am and only exited at about 4:30pm.

The crowd of supporters attracted heavy presence of mobile policeman around the  secretariat along Blantyre street, Wuse Abuja.

With the governorship election in Kogi State fixed for November, three months time, the tension generated by the rejection of the appointments of Faleke’s proteges, Meseko and Okolo by Bello was confounding to Ganduje.

From Wednesday evening, shortly after the National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, briefed reporterd on the outcome of the NWC meeting , the party engaged in rigorous meetings with key stakeholders to resolve the crisis.

The national chairman declared at the inauguration that all issues have been resolved and all stakeholders carried along. He assured that those who lost out in the power game in their respective states would be compensated.

Ganduje said: “From Kogi state, we have Ismail Yahaya. We have taken note of him and he will be engaged in one way or another.

“We have Ikani Shuaibu Okolo from Kogi state. He too will be engaged appropriately in our government.

“Mrs Obinna from Abia, she too will be accommodated.

” Dr Stella Ekpo and two others from Cross Rivers State, according to the outcome of our dialogue, will be accommodated in our government.

“With these, I think we have achieved complete agreement. We have achieved dialogue and we have deepened dialogue within our party and this is our culture. We are not dictators but that does not mean that everyone must necessarily agree with you.”

Meseko, in his acceptance speech, titled: “No Victor, No Vanquished,” thanked President Tinubu for his support. He also expressed gratitude to  Ganduje, Faleke and Bello for their roles in the process leading to his emergence as a national officer.

He thanked other members of the NWC and the entire leadership of the APC from his electoral ward, Odo-Ape, Kabbabunu Council to the national level “for placing their trust in me and providing me with this incredible opportunity”.

He said: “Notwithstanding the intrigues that trailed my election, I wish to state unequivocally that I see neither victor nor vanquished. As a loyal party stalwart, I extend my hands of fellowship to all party members believing that the ultimate goal is the enhancement of the electoral fortunes of our great party at all levels.”

The National Chairman deliberately avoided his office throughout that crisis. Bello sat through the day and the crowd increased. Ganduje took the action to allow frayed nerves to

A source said that at the end of the persuasions and trade offs, Bello’s nominee was told to take the position of Zonal Organizing Secretary (North Central), who replaced the earlier nominated Ikani Okolo.

The source said: “There are talks to cede the zonal organizing secretary post to Bello. All things considered, Meseko’s appointment as DNPS is a done deal.

President Tinubu has given directive to the national chairman to inaugurate Meseko, no matter whose ox was gored.

In arriving at the resolutions, the leadership of the party looked beyond the present to the governorship election in Kogi State which is just three months away. They saw the urgent need to prevent the situation where the two factions go to the election in Kogi with animosity.

Already, the rivalry had been reignited with the emergence of two different lists from the state. So, what the national leadership of our party did was appeal to all parties to quench the fire.

“There was consideration that the Faleke camp be given a sense of belonging in the power equation in Kogi State. Don’t forget that the governorship candidate, the deputy governorship candidate, the minister from Kogi all went to the governor’s side.

Meseko is an experienced hand; a veteran journalist, a consummate media and publicity manager as well as an accomplished politician and a chieftain of the APC.

“Of course the governor also saw the need to avoid divisions, uncoordinated and disjointed campaign  in  the party ahead of the governorship election.

The Bello/Faleke rivalry began, following the death of Prince Abubakar Audu while the counting of the results of the 2015 governorship election was still going.

Audu was leading. Faleke was his running mate and he was expected to replace Audu.

  • Kogi safe under Bello, Onoja, says chieftain

The Director-General of Lokoja Local Government Area (LGA) for Kogi State All Progressives Congress, APC Governorship Campaign Council, Fancy Jimoh Tiamiyu, has said that Governor Yahaya Bello and Chief Edward Onoja are the perfect combination that will transform and lift the state to greater heights.

Tiamiyu stated this in a statement to congratulate Onoja on his inauguration as the new Deputy Governor of Kogi State, following the impeachment of Elder Simon Achuba by members of the State Assembly.

Bello is the candidate of APC in the November 16 election, while Onoja is his running mate.

“The Lokoja All Progressives Congress (APC) Governorship Campaign Organisation joins all members of our great party and the entire people of Kogi State to felicitate with Chief Edward Onoja, the running mate to Governor Yahaya Bello, on his inauguration as the number-two citizen of the state. No doubt, this development is a sign of good things to come for Kogi, as the duo of Onoja and Bello make a perfect match for the overall development of our dear state. I dare say that Kogi is completely safe with Bello and Onoja in the saddle.” Tiamiyu averred.

He added: “Only an unmitigated loyal party man like Onoja would be able to productively and effectively work with Bello to consolidate on the stupendous achievements the governor has recorded since he came on board in 2016. There is no way meaningful progress can be made in a state if a deputy governor is not on the same page with his boss, the governor who is the Chief Executive Officer of the state. We don’t need any cog in the wheel of progress, in the determined effort of our amiable governor to transform and reposition the state for greatness. Kogites should come out en masse to vote for these two refined gentlemen, who have evidently demonstrated that they genuinely have the interest of Kogi at heart and would leave no stone unturned to make it better for all of us as they jointly pilot the affairs of the state.”

On the alleged illegality of Achuba’s impeachment, Tiamiyu said: “I don’t have much to say about that. All I know is that the Assembly members acted within the power granted them by the 1999 Constitution (as amended). Therefore, only a competent court of law can decide whether the action of the lawmakers was right or wrong. Until a court rules otherwise, I think that the decision stands and should be respected by all. That is what I feel.”

  • ‘Genesis of my disagreement with Bello’

The close to two years war of attrition between the Kogi State Deputy Governor Simon Achuba and his principal, Governor Yahaya Bello, reached a crescendo last week, with the outcry by the former that the governor was after his life. JAMES AZANIA examines some of the issues in contention and how it may affect the November 16 governorship election in the North-central state.

From the outset of the Yahaya Bello administration in 2016, there has been no love lost between him and his deputy, Simon Achuba.

Achuba emerged deputy governor almost by accident; he never expected in his wildest imagination that he would be deputy governor. He was picked unexpectedly to take the place of James Faleke, the running mate to the late Prince Abubakar Audu, after Faleke rejected the idea of being deputy to Bello.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) national leadership  had picked Bello to step into Audu’s shoes, after the latter died suddenly when he had virtually won the Kogi governorship election in 2016; a decision that did not go down well with Faleke and his supporters.

Achuba revealed the genesis of the disagreement between him and  at his principal, in an interview with reporters at his official residence in Lokoja last Thursday. He said he had offered his advice to the governor, as second in-command, on how to handle some of the burning issues that had reared its head then, including the administration’s obligation to workers.

The deputy governor alleged that rather than focusing on deliverying the dividends of democracy to the people, Governor Bello chose to vent his frustration on his perceived enemies.

The government was to however deny the allegations. It lampooned Achuba, saying his motive was highly suspect and borne out of ‘blind rage’.

Achuba had made it clear during interaction with reporters on Thursday that his life was in danger.

The row between Achuba and Bello came to public knowledge last November, when reports suggested that the supply of water and light at the deputy’s office had been cut off and that the development was engineeered by the governor.

Last Thursday, the embattled deputy governor cried out to the Presidency and security agencies, claiming that the governor had detailed gunmen to kill him.

He said some gunmen on the payroll of Governor Bello were out to kill him. He said the insecurity in the state is not about kidnapping, ritual killings or armed robbery, but about the gunmen unleashed on political opponents by the Bello-led government.

Achuba said a culture of fear and silence now reigns in the state. He called the attention of President Mohammadu Buhari, the Inspector General of Police and the Director-General of the State Security Service, to what he described as the planned attack on him, his aides and members of his family.

He called on the security agencies to focus their searchlight on Kogi, saying that the rift between him and Bello is about the issue of performance. He said since in he came to power in 2016, Bello has been preoccupied with the fight with his perceived enemies.

For instance, Achuba said the listing of payment of salaries as achievements means the government is not working and has nothing else to showcase.

He said that payment of salaries is not an achievement, but a duty the government owes workers to fulfill.

He said complain about the non-payment of his salaries was earlier played up, pointing out that the non release of imprest to his office, which come with salaries of aides and workers attached to his office was uncalled for.

The deputy governor added: “For more than one year now, none of these salaries have been paid. Now, imprest that comes to the Office of the Deputy Governor are statutory. Once salaries are paid, the salary of the Office of the Governor, including the security votes, are paid. Then, that of the Office of the Deputy Governor. If a governor refused to do that, what do you call it? As, the deputy governor, I have allowances and benefits that accrue to my office…there is a set standard of what ought to be paid; since the day I became deputy governor, I ceased to be a private citizen. If for two years, I have been traveling, and no entitlements is paid to me, won’t the governor feel ashamed of this?

“My concern is that we should leave a good legacy; the struggle is for the progress of my people. Up till today, there is hardly a project that can be pointed to. Look at the volume of money that has accrued to the state, such that even without (staff) screening, the money would have been enough to pay civil servants and undertake projects, but even with the money, look at what you have. If you look at the issues, many are very unnecessary; all the fights taking place in many fronts are unnecessary.”

The deputy governor stated that his recent visit to the Presidency, over the lingering impasse was the 10th in a series, having exhausted all avenues within the state to settle the matter. Thus, he said he had no choice but to take his case to Mr. President.

He added that his letter demanding the payment of his entitlements followed the failure by the government to address the issue.

He asserted that dialogue, persuasion and engagement by government are integral aspects of democracy. He lamented that a situation “where government was fighting everyone from top to bottom” leaves much to be desired.

Achuba said his rift with Governor Bello was because of the latter’s disregard for civil servants. He said from inception of the administration, payment of salaries had remained an issue.

He said in spite of the prolonged screening of civil servants, the state still does not have a nominal pay roll and that notwithstanding the bailout funds received by the state, issues with salaries persist.

The embattled deputy governor said only political office holders have been paid up to date, while the civil servant are being owed two months at the least.

He listed infrastructure development as his other grouse with Governor Bello, lamenting that it is difficult for the present administration to point at projects it started and completed.

He said that with the volume of monies the administration received, it would have still been able to make the people happy, by paying salaries and still able to execute infrastructural projects.

Achuba maintained that all the fight by the governor since he assumed office were avoidable. He said his travail was not because he engaged in anti-party activities, as being alleged in some quarters, but because of his insistence on good governance.

He said that over the years, he swallowed indignities undeserving of the office he occupies, asserting that having ceased to being a private citizen by virtue of his status as the deputy governor, he saw no reason for all the injustices that had been meted on him.

Deputy Governor Achuba added a curious angle to the imbroglio, when he fingered the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Edward Onoja, as the brain behind some of his travails. He alleged that all the latter was out for, was an office with immunity, because of the misdeeds he has perpetrated.

He said there are billboards and posters of the governor and the chief of staff, all over the place, not with the deputy governor.

It is no longeer debatable whether Achuba will be Bello’s running mate in the November 16 governorship election in the state;  there are campaign posters and billboards all the place, of Governor Bello and Edward Onoja.

The deputy governor said that he chose not to resign from office, but preferred to stay and help bring change to the system.

He however thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve.

His words: ”I want to use this opportunity to thank His Excellency, the Governor of Kogi State for the privilege he gave to me to serve as Deputy Governor. I must appreciate him because if you look at the circumstance under which we all came to power, it was within his discretion to choose his junior brother as deputy governor, because the constitution did not say that it must be so-so or that kind of person. So, that opportunity remains an indelible gesture that I will always remain grateful and be happy for. Else, I wouldn’t be standing here to address you in the first place, as the deputy governor of Kogi State.”

The government has however denied the allegation made against Governor Bello and warned  Achuba to desist from making such, in the absence of any evidence to back up such claims.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onogwu Mohammed, described Achuba’s allegation as bogus and an “exhibition of a blind rage by an angry suckling with a long-term pattern of abnormal behaviour characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance”.

The statement reads in part: “The Kogi State Government is appalled that a Deputy Governor, who should epitomize leadership and good example in all senses, could descend so low to employ smear campaign against the person of His Excellency, Governor Yahaya Bello, and we state without equivocation that Mr Achuba has no shred of evidence for his reckless surmising, which is nothing but a scripted venture in ruinous adventure. We do not train assassins and, as such, the state government or her personnel cannot be involved in sending assassins to murder any human soul let alone a deputy governor of our dear state.

“Despite these unsubstantiated ramblings, however, we deem it fit to clear the air, by letting the general public know that the Kogi State Government would not be dragged into any form of political gerrymandering concocted for the furtherance of any person’s political interest or notoriety.

“We warn Mr. Simon Achuba who is known to history as a man whose affinity for violence is unparalleled, not to judge us by his own standards. The report of the Kogi State Government Commission of Enquiry on the Iyaño ethnic crises in 2017 is still fresh in our memories.

“The Kogi State Government led by Alhaji Yahaya Bello, therefore, rejects the futile attempt at seeking to link it to any assassination attempt on the deputy governor, and we advice that people desist from seeking political capital from scenarios they imagine would advance their parochial cause, no matter how banal such causes may seem.

“Nigerians and Kogites in particular are aware that it is not in the character of the administration to persecute perceived opponents, let alone the second in command of the ‘New Direction’ team. We have remained a model for peaceful engagement and political dialogue. Any inclination at portraying us otherwise will not be acceptable”.

  • Bello, Audu, Dichie and struggle for Kogi APC ticket

No fewer than 42 aspirants are struggling for the governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kogi State. Who becomes the flagbearer for the November 16 poll? Correspondent JAMES AZANIA examines the intra-party contest.

Eyes are on the Kogi State All Progressives Congress (APC) as it prepares for the governorship primary billed for next month. No fewer than 42 aspirants are in the race. According to the Independent National Electoral Commission, the election will hold on November 16.

Unlike in the ruling APC, where the mode of primary has become contentious, between those rooting for direct primary and advocates of indirect primaries, not much noise has emanated from the PDP mode of primary to be adopted. However, the frenzy and jostling for parties’ tickets has has taken off.

Governor Yahaya Bello has unfolded his second term ambition. His supporters are already on the field. His rivals-Admiral Usman, Yahaya Audu, Tim Dichie, Hadiza Ibrahim- are challenging him to a duel. The primary will be tough.

    Bello

Despite widespread vilification, Bello appears the most formidable of the lot. Not only is he presently in the saddle the Lugard House, he appears to hold the magical wand, just has he has eaten deep into the psyche of the people, to the extent that virulent criticisms hauled at his administration have not deterred him or his zeal for a second term.

Bello has as his foot soldiers political appointees and the sole administrators of the 21 local government areas who are expected to deliver for him, when the time comes.

His critics accuse him of non-performance, non-payment of backlog of workers’ salary, sidelining of party chieftains and other alleged infractions. But, the Ebira born governor remains a moving train that is determined not only on picking his party’s ticket, but being returned for a second term. Barring any unforseen circumstances, Bello may be the man to beat.

    Admiral Usman Jubril (retd).

A former Chief of Naval Staff, Jubril, since his entrance into the race, has presented himself as a formidable challenger for the ticket. Hr is believed to have the backing of powerful chieftains, who see him as an alternative to Bello. During his tenure as the naval chief, he engineered the citing of the Navy Secondary School, in Okura, Kogi East, where he hails from.

Jubril has not been seen selling his aspiration in Kogi, and not much of him has been seen by the people. But, his myriad of support groups and others that have endorsed him continue to swell.

In one of the endorsements, Youths of Dekina/Bassa Local Government of Kogi State described him as the best man for the job.

The youths in a statement by Mohammed Abdullahi, president of the Bassa/Dekina Youth Progressive Union for Good Government, said Jibril is well equipped to rescue Kogi State and restore its glory.

According to them: “The liberation of our people and society has become imperative, since in place of authorities over the years could not do little or much to help salvage our lands from the status of backwardness and underdevelopment. It is on this assertion we the youth of Dekina/Bassa LG deem it necessary to support our amiable, purposeful, pragmatic, God sent leader and to ask him to contest for the position of governorship of Kogi State, come November 16, 2019.

“This is in view of his immense contribution to the people and society at large. Every society or people must discover its own mission; its either betrayed or fulfilled. We believe Usman Jibril shall fulfill the desire, yearning and aspirations of our people by 2019. He is a detribalized Kogite, whose friendship and acceptability cuts across frontiers of age, sex, religion or tribe. He shall attend to the needs of our people. We therefore want to usher him as our sole candidate for the job.

“We believe that he has the credentials and the experience in the management of the affairs of Kogi State, and removing from out of the woods”.

Jubril stands a bright chance of getting the ticket.

    Prince Yahaya Audu

Audu, younger brother of the late Prince Abubakar Audu, the flagbearer  in 2015, is said to have garnered the support of some political appointees in the cabinet of Governor Bello. About six commissioners and other aides of the governor are set to join Audu who aspired for Kogi East Senatorial seat during the last election.

Those purportedly teeming up with him are said to have adduced the failure of the governor to pay workers and pensioners and hardship faced by some of the appointees, as some of the reason for so doing.

    Audu’s cannot be ignored.

    Tim Nda Dichie

Not a few were taken by surprise when Dichie, a former member of Bello’s cabinet, resigned as Commissioner for Agriculture, when he was barely a year in office.

From the minority Bassa–speaking tribe of Kogi East, Dichie is an experienced politician, philanthropist and business magnate. He was one of the aspirants during the 2015 primary.

The Basange high chief who prides himself as a “symbol of unity between the majority/minority dichotomy at the moment, for the state,” has articulated his motivation for the contest. He said God has positioned him to be next governor of Kogi, and that the financial strength of other aspirants would not change God’s plan.

He is seen as one of those that may spring a surprise.

Sank Lulu, a former chairman of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFA), Mona Audi, Gen. Patrick Akpa (retd.) and Saidu Mohammed Ogah, from Kogi East and Hadiza Ibrahim, are other APC governorship aspirants.

The main opposition PDP, ousted from power in 2015, parades no less than a dozen aspirants, including former Governor Idris Wada and Abubakar Ibrahim, son of former Governor Ibrahim Idris (Ibro) and a woman, Hajia Halimat Alfa.

Others include Ibrahim Wada, Senator Dino Melaye, Dr Victor Adoji, Ameh Joe Erico, Hassan Adamu Enape, Emmanuel Omebije, Aminu Abubakar Suleiman, Mohammed Shaibu and Zakari Alfa.

Of the lot, Wada appears to have more weight, but that is only on paper, as not a few lay the blame for the party’s ouster at the last election at his feet.

A gentleman and silent achiever, Wada while in office allowed some of his aides to run riot, resulting in the sinking of the PDP ship in 2015, after over eight years in the saddle.

Other aspirants that parade themselves, to borrow from the parlance of the pro Bello APC supporters, can at best be described as Diaspora politicians, who have lost the verve to truly challenge for the position, despite the presence of core and diehard PDP members that abound in Kogi, coupled with the watered down impact of the state party executive, which is very much unlike the days of Hassan Salawu on the saddle. It would appear a long short for the Kogi PDP to return as landlord at Lugard House, four years after departure.
