Nigeria will become better, says Kumuyi

The General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi has urged Nigerians to keep hope alive in God because Nigeria will become better.

Kumuyi made this known at a Special Sunday service organised by the church yesterday at the International Bible Training Centre, Ayobo, Lagos.

The programme had thousands of Christians from across the state, with the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Emmanuel Udom; and Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Justice Uwemedimo Nwoko present.

According to him, no matter the challenges, we need hope, and with hope, every thing will fall into place and Nigeria will become better.

He noted that the fight against corruption and other social upheavals begin with everyone and in our homes where righteousness, probity and godliness are given its pride of place.

He said “changes start with me and with you and when we all change for good, it will rub off on the country and we all will be better for it.

Earlier, Udom called on governments to rethink and provide strategies on diversification of the economy.

He said there is no developed nation that cannot feed its people. One step in development is the ability of the government to feed its people.

The cleric recalled that God did not create man until he created what he would eat, noting that there is so much we can get from the land.

He said we have viable lands and better climate conditions, thus a better and pragmatic framework on agriculture will help us revive our economy.

“I am the governor of one of the blessed states with good weather. We have a lot of cocoa, cassava, plantain, and our cocoa, cassava, plantain flavour is the best and we’ll make them more viable for the state”, he said.

He said agriculture was one of his five-point agenda, and it’s because of the need to look beyond oil.

While applauding Kumuyi in the promotion of peace and spiritual rejuvenation, he said “if we are praying this much and men of God sacrifice themselves for this country; I am sure, we will reach our promise land”.

He urged Nigerians to continue to pray for Nigeria because soon if we do not relent in our prayers we will sing a new song.

“I run the only state that is named after God. I pray for Akwa Ibom and Nigeria more than I pray for my children and I am sure God will answer our prayer”.

He added that we must shun corruption. Let us start with our individual lives. Telling lies is corruption because if you can tell lies, you can do anything. Let us have a sound structure to tackle corruption.

  • Ambode promises better, more prosperous Lagos

Ambode promises better, more prosperous Lagos

Lagos State Governor  Akinwunmi Ambode yesterday reassured Lagosians that his administration would not rest on its oars, but intensify efforts to deliver more infrastructure across the state in the next one year.

The governor, in his one year anniversary Address to Lagosians, titled, “Daring to dream and ready to actualise”, said despite the fact that the global economy is in turmoil and the Nigerian economy is facing huge challenges, Lagos has continued to march on with confidence and a clear vision.

Outlining some of his plans for the next one year, Ambode said plans are underway to install a fiber optic network around the State to boost broadband access to our homes and offices, improve the transportation system as well as continue the massive infrastructural development ongoing across the metropolis.

“We shall build and rehabilitate more roads; we shall ignite our Tourism and Entertainment potentials by approving a new International conference center and entertainment and theatre district; our television and radio stations will be fully overhauled to make them first class.

“We shall automate our bus system and introduce new buses; we shall overhaul our garbage collection system to make it more efficient; we shall build and refurbish more schools; we shall commence disbursement of loans to entrepreneurs and our youth under our Employment Trust Fund; establish a Rent-To-Own housing scheme and many more initiatives.

The governor said more importantly, greater attention would be paid issues involving the elderly, the youth and the people living with disabilities in the coming year, while schools and hospitals will receive special attention comprehensively.

“Fellow Lagosians, I renew my oath and pledge to serve you diligently, with passion, love and perseverance. I have always wanted to serve and I just ask that you continue to give me the cooperation to serve you and together, we will all realise the Lagos of our dreams where we thrive and not just survive.

“I also ask you to dream along with me as we actualize a vision of a vibrant, non-discriminatory, clean, prosperous, safe Lagos that we can all be proud of and God will help us all achieve our dreams,” he said.

The governor, who also spoke at a thanksgiving service held at the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Ikeja to mark his  first year anniversary, said his election despite many challenges, was a clear indication that God was involved right from the beginning and as such he would continue to draw strength and inspiration from the Almighty.

The governor  thanked the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC) , Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu for believing in him and supporting him.

  • ‘We need better, cheaper houses’

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Malam Muhammad Bello wants better houses for residents of the territory but he also desires affordable shelter.

To achieve this, he called for a multi-disciplinary meeting of all professionals involved in the building industry.

Bello made the call while receiving a delegation from the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON) led by its President, Arc. Umaru Aliyu that paid him a courtesy visit.

He reiterated that the call was necessary i order to enable professionals to brainstorm and ensure that sanity is brought to the sub-sector, thereby providing more housing delivery to the populace.

Malam Bello noted that the industry is robust, with the capacity to provide ready employment to the teeming populace in the FCT, because of the diverse professionals and unskilled labourers involved from the conception to the completion stage.

He expressed delight to meet professional bodies like ARCON that have contributed immensely to the development of the Federal Capital Territory, recalling that recently, he had a similar meeting with the Town Planners Association Nigeria.

According to a statement issued by the Deputy Director/Chief Press Secretary, Muhammad Sule, the minister said architects, engineers, town planners, surveyors and builders should all come together to find a better way to fast track the entire process from the drawings, building plan approvals, setting out and the entire building construction process in the territory.

The Minister decried a situation where houses are built in estates without giving enough space for greening, planting of trees and at least a garden at the backyard as well as space for children play area.

Bello assured that the FCT Administration on its part would make the process transparent and friendly to all players in the industry.

Speaking earlier, the President of the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria, Umaru Aliyu congratulated the Minister over his appointment.

The President said that ARCON is assiduously working to eliminate quacks, which he noted have contributed in no small measure to the cases of collapsed buildings across the country.

He stated that no registered architect has ever been involved in any case of collapsed building.

The FCT Permanent Secretary, Dr. Babatope Ajakaiye, the Executive Secretary of FCDA, Engr. Adamu Ismaila and some senior officials of the FCT Administration joined the Minister to receive the architects.

  • Speed is good, but order is better

SIR: “Grain by grain, a loaf; stone by stone a castle”, says a Yugoslavian proverb. Haile Gebrselassie is one of the word’s legends in marathon racing. Usain Bolt is the King of the legends of sprint racing – 100m and 200m dashes. Haile is good at sprint, so also Usain can make a good attempt at long distance running. But neither can be king in the other’s forte.

Why? Because marathon and sprint are two different kinds of races with different requirements for excelling in either. The short and quick trip of a sprint requires expending more energy and swift speed than the long, onerous and systematic race of a marathon.

Getting Nigeria back on track – revitalizing a moribund economy perfidiously left in shambles; securing Nigerians from insurgents and common criminals; uprooting corruption from the many nooks and crannies it has made home – will not be achieved in the wink of an eye.

Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka says, and aptly so: “The economic condition of the nation of the people does not deteriorate overnight … A prolonged and unchecked process of attrition which was neglected in the past is now knocking on the door.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has since resumption of office picked pace, step by step; starting systematically with the revival of the EFCC for his anti-graft fight. Thus setting the foundation for any work he will seek to achieve in office. It resonates with the indispensable fact that corruption cannot subsist with any development agenda that any government may seek to put in place.

The full implementation of the Treasury Single Account (TSA) set the ball rolling for all round accountability, consolidation of government revenue and in effect curbing the systemic corruption of government agencies in remitting revenue back to government purse.

The rejuvenation of our institutions bespeaks the reality of a system responding to the gradual process of change: all of a sudden, the EFCC sat up, so did the NCC and the CBN; the Custom Service had a revenue boost in its short period of changed leadership. As gradual and tardy as this change may seem, it is taking shape, form and setting the ground for soon coming results.

The moral imperative of patience must be summoned for the months to come.

Beyond the rhetoric and exuberance of transient hashtags reflecting an understandable desire from Nigerians for quick results and magic-wand change, President Buhari is laying a solid foundation for a robust, sustainable and revolutionary change agenda.

Diversification of the economy – through exploiting the potentials of the agriculture, power, mining, technology and manufacturing sectors – is President Buhari’s economic roadmap to solving our current economic downturn, occasioned by our fixated over-reliance on oil which forms over 80% of our earnings that has now dropped to a record low of below $40 per barrel.

Investments in these sectors will come from around the world. President Buhari’s trips to strategic events, countries and power states are well schemed to seeking critical assistance for this times.

Has every tactical move, piece by piece produced results? My answer is a resounding Yes!

Each of his trips has sought to build relationships that foster partnerships for solutions to Nigeria’s current myriad of problems.

The foremost principle of international diplomacy is that no country should exist as an island on its own. It is more necessary than ever for Nigeria – in our dire and dicey mire – to hold hands even more tightly with our brothers in the international community as we seek their help to bringing solutions to the problems we face.

For Nigeria: globalization and strengthened international relations at this time has the potentials for increased flow of trade, investment and technology – and that means, more jobs and improved living standards.

As we run this marathon of change with the fortitude typical of the Nigerian people, let us hold on to the wisdom of these words: You get the chicken by hatching the egg, not by smashing it.

  • Will 2016 be a better year?

A New Year will roll in tomorrow. We will all pray it be a better year than 2015. At about this time in 2014, this column asked: Will 2015 be a better year.? A statement in that column caught the attention of the editor-in-chief of a magazine in Ibadan. We asked of the statement can be expanded into a full-blown article for his magazine. That article appeared under the tittle A golden key for true humanity. That article appears in this column today, tittle WILL 2016 BE A BETTER YEAR?

Many people on earth today do not live a conscious life. They do not render service. All they care about is bread and butter…… were they striving upwards, that is homewards, they would think only of rendering service to their society, even as the sun, the moon and the stars, other stellar bodies and features on this earth render service to make the earth hospitable for man.

When I am about to retire for the day, I say bedtime prayer for restful sleep and, afterwards, strive to be in tune with creation before my eyes give way to sleep.

To strive means to work hard and not just to try. Being in tune means being a part of.  And Creation? It is a definite work like a house with all its structures and function. As a work, creation, like a house or a motor car, stands outside the Author. It is the World that is everything which lies outside the creator and His immediate vicinity. This huge World has many sub divisions or such worlds of which the Lord Jesus would speak when He said….. In my father’s house, there are many mansions” we all know a mansion is a huge building. As a young man, I often wondered: how can there be many mansions in one house? Now I get the message right, thanks to Revealed knowledge on the face of the earth today.

Creation is that house of which the Lord spoke. And the “many mansions” are the many worlds in that House, creation. Paradise or the spiritual world is the pinnacle of creation. Even paradise has two distinct parts. There is the world of those spiritual beings, that is human spirits, who were created in the “image of God” And these beings were perfect and never had the need, as “images” of God” to journey out of paradise for self-development. For they were perfect from the beginning to all eternity. Another part of paradise, which lies below the world of these perfect spirit beings, is the world of immature spirit germs who had first to travel downwards out of this world to regions below, where the heat and pressure was conducive enough for their unfolding (sprouting), flowering and fruiting. These are the humans (I would rather say human spirits) who are resident on earth today. Some of them are earth-bound today, or bound to some other parts of creation which lie below their starting- point in the lower paradise. The paradise, not of created beings but of developed ones. In the highest state of their development or perfection, they would become not images of God, but the images of the images of God.

It is a long story line attempting to narrate the story of creation. Among earth-men, there is no one not born into families or nations other than the ones in which we found ourselves, why we dream of event that later come to pass….. And many other question of existence.

These glimpses we put together to form pictures. The picture, 8 like the glimpses, are deep or shallow, depending on the depth of the inner struggle and experiences. For example, I need no-one to tell me of the possibility of Out- of –Body Experience (OBE) after I had one at 24, finding myself outside my body which  I beheld lying sleepily in bed. Anyone who has not had this experience is likely to deny its possibility, if he/she has a closed mind. But mankind is not left alone in the deep inner struggles to make a meaning of existence. When I remember the helps from the prophets, seers and artists, to mention a few, and the revealed knowledge on the face of the earth today, I doff my hat for the composer of that Baptist Broad man Hymnal song Never Alone, which is all about the Redeemer promising never to leave us alone.

Where I am heading is that the knowledge of creation and attunement to creation, makes a more mature happier and service oriented  person of us, and ignorance of this knowledge account for why many people behave like animals, especially when, in a country such as Nigeria, they find themselves in position of political leadership.

I am encouraged to write this article by Mr. Shola Adebowale ‘’Editor – in – Chief of Achievers Goldmate magazine. He read and liked my column in THE NATION newspaper on January 1, 2015 titled WILL 2015 BE A happy new year? My projection was that it wouldn’t for many people because they still did not know much about creation and its laws and what creation expects of them before it can reward them handsomely. We stand on the threshold today, as a new year ‘2016’ begins to pop its head in the corner. It is true President Ebele Jonathan and his folks in government are gone, replaced by President Mohammed Buhari in a bitter election. Thus, we have new helmsmen promising change’’. What will inform the content and thrust of that change? We must wonder. Humanwill or GodsWill? If human will, which stand in opposition to Gods will as engraved in the language He speaks to us in creation, are we not reminded of the warning of the prophet…… take counsel together (against God’s Will ) and it shall not stand?.

    A World of Service

world of service, filled with dedication and born of love is what we observe throughout creation. The earth was created billions of years ago to provide a heaven for human spirit from the spiritual world in search of self-development to sprout, flower and fruit. The sun, about 93 milllion miles away, provides heat source for the earth to make it hospitable. If it is farther away, everything on earth would freeze. If the sun is nearer, the earth would burn. In wisdom, love and service the sun as been kept where it is. The moon is not up there for decoration. So are not other co-planets of our solar system and the stars, as we shall soon see. Everything somewhere is in its station to contribute its quota to making the earth become hospitable for its inhabitants. These inhabitants need to work, to exercise their bodies, and to rest their bodies for recuperation after a hard day’s work, to bring about a healthy necessary balance between work and rest. This is in keeping with the law of Balance, one of the laws of Nature which we encounter and observe in everyday life. We do wheel balancing for our car tyres so the cars do not become coffins on the road. The architects balance or even out the structures in a building so that the building does not collapse. Nigerians geopolitics is now bedecked with geo-political balance in the cabinet. Women balance colours out in their dressing and, in the kitchens, salt must not surpass pepper or palm oil in the soup pot!

p, up there in the skies, service for humanity is at play in the movement of the cosmic bodies. The earth provides us with day for work and night for sleep, rest and recuperation. To do this, the earth rotates on its axes, turning one part towards the sun for day lighting this time, and taking it away for nightfall another time. It rotates on its own axis from west to east once in about 24 hours to achieve this. It is an herculian task for the earth because, while doing this for mankind’s convenience, it is under pressure from the sun and the stars which are like its bosses. Relative to the stars, the duration of this rotational motion is 23 hours, 56 minutes. By this time, the sun has left the earth behind by four full minutes. So, the earth would have to double up to catch up with the sun.

This is why, relative to the sun, the earth is said to rotate on its axis once in 24 hours. The scenario is amazing to people who follow it. All these huge objects are in space, moving in all sorts of direction, hardly colliding. The speed of the earth’s rotation, which brings day and night, for example is 1,675 kilometers per hour or 465 meters per seconds or 1,040 mile per hours. This is incredible. Spinning at 1,675 kilometers an hour the earth could easily spin us and our building off its surface into outer space like rockets. But, mercifully, the force of gravity keeps us so beautifully on the earth that we do not even know the earth is moving at an incredible 1,675 kilometers an hour where some of the fastest saloon cars cannot hit 300 kilometers an hour. What a loving service rendered to humanity. Yet this is not the only movement the earth makes for our benefit which we do not feel or know about.

A second earth motion is its revolution around the sun which it takes an average of one full earth years to complete. This movement brings the various seasons.

In Nigeria, we can talk about the rain season, followed by the harmattan season and then the dry season. Each season brings about different kind of food crops, vegetable; fruits and herbs for strengthen the health of the body or healing it of disease. This is important for human survival on earth. We appreciate this when we know that everything is radiation and that we exist in an ocean of radiation. The sun, the stars, the other planets, galaxies, trees, underground rivers, rocks, mountains, etc are radiating upon us at different frequencies.

Each object radiation is peculiar to it. Throughit, the object   announces or broadcasts its existence to the universe. There radiation waves may hurt the radiations of the human body if it has no resistance against them. We can glimpse this in situations where some people develop skin cancer from cosmic radiations and other causes while some people exposed to the same environment do not. Ditto the onset of cataract of the eye lens. In the Wisdom of the creator, the earth forges these radiations into food sources from which man may derive protecting radiations for the health and strength of his body.

And that is why it has been suggested that he eats every fruit and vegetable in season to optimise this benefit. This is yet another great service for human convenience on earth.

To bring the season about and afford mankind of their immense benefit the earth moves around the sun at yet another incredible speed of 108,000 kilometres per hour to travel 940 million kilometres around the sun in one year (365.242199 days) there is yet another movement of  many others which take place that I would like to mention. Our earth belongs to a solar system of which the sun is the core. This solar system is one of the billions and billions of solar systems which form a GALAXY of solar systems. Billions of galaxies of solar systems exist.

The galaxy to which our solar system belongs is called the NILKY WAY. Like the earth and the sun and our solar system, these galaxies are also in motion creating all sorts of movements which affect us positively in earth.

AS AMARA GRADS says in www.center.stanford.edu/faq/qsols.: ‘’the sun is moving towards lambda Hercules at 20 kilometres per second or 12 miles per second. Units, 72,000 kilometres per hour or 45,000 miles per hour. This speed is in a frame if rest of the other stars are all standing still. Three dimensional pictures of the suns movement through the galaxy is a little complicated. The sun is moving upwards, out of the plane of NIKLY WAY, at a speed of seven kilometres per second. Currently, the sun lies 50 Light-years above the mid plane of the galaxy, and its motion is steadily carrying it further away. But the gravitational pull of the stars in the galactic (NILKY WAY) plane is slowing down the sun’s escape”.

When I learn that the sun is trying to ‘’escape’’ two questions cross my mind:

    • Will it abandon our solar system and leave it to perish?
    • Will it drag us along with It.? We know from the Law of motion, another law of Nature, that everything must be on the move otherwise it would perish.

e know, also, that all the formations are moving towards the conclusion of a great cycle know spiritually as the Cosmic turning – point, the conclusion of which will bring monumental events on this earth. The cycle is in keeping with the Law of the Cycle, another Law of Nature, which compels everything to return to its starting point. The blood flows from the heart to all parts of the body and returns to the heart. Evaporated water returns to the land through rainfall. We drink water from the earth and it returns to the earth as urine. The air we inhale return to its starting –point with exhalation. We human spirit came from somewhere and must return there. Our bodies come from the earth and would return to the earth.

Even this earth and the solar system and the galaxies and the universes which formed from a hail of gas and dust will someday, individually, return to this primeval state.

Amara Graps tell us: ‘’the astronomer Frank Bash estimates that, in 14 million years, the sun will reach its maximum height above the galactic disk. From that 250 Light-years position, it will be pulled back towards the plane of the galaxy. Passing through, it will travel to a point 250 light years below the disk, and then escalate upward again to reach its present position 66 million years from now. We crossed the plane two million years ago. We are currently in the thick of the galactic disk and our view of distant regions is largely blocked by dust but 10 to 20 million years from now, our motion will allow a full view of our starry galaxy. The galaxy is thought to be 100,000 Light years in diametre and is thought to be about half-way out from the ceuder…. The sun appears to be cruising along at 20 kilometres per second and it takes 240 million years to complete the grand circuit around the galaxy.’’

If you wish to know how small and stupid man is when, egoistically, he thinks of himself as the centre of the universe, working and fighting for himself alone, all you need to do is look out in knowledge into the clear night sky. Then, think of the earth, your father’s backyard which you think is the biggest in the Universe.

The sun is 10 times larger than the earth in diametre. Mercury, a co-planet in our solar system, is about 38 times longer in diametre than the earth. Venus rates 95 times more than the earth. Mars is 53 times better rated. Jupiter is 11.19 times wider. Saturn is 9.40, Uranus 4.04. Neptune 3.88. Pluto is 18. Our earth is indeed, a small house in which we live, this is in terms of diametre.

According to the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA), the following are the relative sizes (radii) of the solar system planets to the earth… Jupiter 1,120 percent the size of the earth; Saturn 945 percent, Uranus 400 percent, Neptune 388 percent; Venus 95 percent; Mars 63 percent; Mercury 38 percent; we see the sun as a huge star. On a clear night, we see the star as diminutive. But that is only because these other stars are far, far, far away.

The sun may be about 330,000 times more massive than the earth and contain 99.8 percent the mass or content of the entire solar system. It is nonetheless one of the smallest stars in the Universe. Sirius, the biggest star in the night sky, is twice as massive as the sun and 25 times more luminous than it.  To continue next week.

  • USA coach admits: Eaglets were better

USA U17 team coach, Richie Williams has admitted his team lost to a good Nigeria side on the opening day of the FIFA U17 World Cup in Chile.

The coach regretted the chances his team lost, saying if they had converted them they would have affected the result of the game.

“We are obviously disappointed because of the outcome. We played a good first half, we were balanced, solid and we even created some chance that we were not able to convert,” said Richie Williams, whose team face Croatia on Tuesday in their second game of the competition.

“Nigeria scored two quick goals, but thanks to unfortunate errors on our side. We were hoping to be more effective, but we lost against a good Nigerian team.”

Saturday’s result was a repeat of the only other clash between the two countries in 2001, when Nigeria also triumphed 2-0.

  • Bayelsa teachers seek better working condition

Bayelsa teachers seek better working condition

The Executive Secretary of the Bayelsa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr. Walton Liverpool, stirred a controversy at the Peace Park, Yenagoa, during the celebration of this year’s World Teachers’ Day. The teachers disagreed on some of the things he reeled off as achievements of the state government to improve the educational system.

•A cross section of teachers at the World Teachers’ Day in Bayelsa
•A cross section of teachers at the World Teachers’ Day in Bayelsa

In unison, the teachers who attended this year’s celebration with mixed feelings, shouted in protest when Liverpool, the chairman of the occasion, claimed that Governor Seriake Dickson-led administration had provided school uniforms to Bayelsa pupils; sank boreholes in schools to provide potable water; conducted regular seminars and workshops as well as provided free school buses.

The way the teachers reacted angrily, almost booing Liverpool, it was obvious that the government was economical with the truth in those areas. But none of the teachers disagreed with the SUBEB boss when he mentioned the construction of headmasters’ and teachers’ quarters and building of office blocks in schools as some of the achievements of the government.

Other achievements that the teachers seemed to have agreed with were supply of desks, seats to schools; the college of education at Sagbama; overseas scholarship  programmes for students and regular payment of teachers’ and other workers’ salaries.

Again, Liverpool incurred the wrath of the teachers. He tried to rehash the solidarity statements of the union and ended by saying, “the struggle continues”. Unknown to him, Bayelsa teachers are now more upwardly mobile, more enlightened and better educated and have done away with aphorisms conveniently adopted by politicians to keep marginalising them.

So, the idea that teachers’ struggles are unending was quite infuriating, as openly expressed by the audience. They resisted it and raised their voices in demonstration until the Principal Secretary, National Union of Teachers (NUT), who is also a lawyer, Comrade Okoroafor Okechukwu, spoke a more popular language to them. He calmed the frayed nerves when he said: “teachers struggle ends today”.

But the struggles among Bayelsa teachers seem endless.

The state Chairman, NUT, Comrade Bokolo Tonworio, listed plethora of demands of Bayelsa teachers. He said the primary and post-primary teachers are yet to be paid the N18, 000 minimum wage arrears which nearly all other public servants had been paid. He lamented non-implementation of 2013/2014 primary school teachers’ promotion and inability of the government to conduct 2015 promotion exercise for primary school teachers.

It was all knocks on the government for failing to pay promotion arrears arising from 2013 promotions and non-supply of instructional materials and statutory school records in the spirit of the emergency in education.

Part of his worries is also that there are discrepancies between the “oracle-captured” and “non-oracle-based teachers” in the payment of monthly salaries.

Besides, funding of examination and continuous assessments across the schools and recruitment of teachers into rural schools are part of the headaches in the system.

But the teachers are not ungrateful. They thanked the government for declaring a state of emergency in education sector and pursuing it vigorously.

The NUT boss commended Dickson’s government for prompt payment of teachers’ salaries; massive rehabilitation of educational infrastructure; restoration of scholarships at the secondary school levels; establishment of befitting teachers training academy, Bolou-Orua, Sagbama and supply of computer sets and power generating sets.

He said the theme of the celebration, “Empowering Teachers, Building Sustainable Societies”, was apt as it emphasised the significance of teachers and underscores their critical position in the society and nation-building.

“The business of teachers’ empowerment is the duty of all the stakeholders in the community. The union calls on all stakeholders to place the empowerment of teachers in the front burner of their policies and agenda.

“The government should see the teacher as a veritable tool and medium by which the philosophies, ethos, norms, ethics, ideas and aesthetics will be transferred to the future.

“Therefore, disempowering teachers is tantamount to creating a future of powerless and feeble citizens that will further perpetuate the dependency of Nigeria to our erstwhile colonial masters and deepening of corruption and socio-economic malaise”, he said.

In his remarks, Okechukwu said the day was set aside to honour and celebrate teachers because of their pivotal roles in the society.

He said: “For us in Bayelsa, this day is almost like one’s birthday. It is a day to encourage and recognise practising teachers. When you honour the teacher, you are motivating him.

“The government of Dickson has been steadfast in the funding of primary and secondary education. It has been consistent, especially in the payment of salaries. But all has not been too well for teachers because of the discrepancy between oracle-captured teachers and persons not yet captured.

“I don’t know why the discrepancy should exist. It is either that all of them go digital or they go manual to create equal playing field among the teachers. We want this dichotomy dismantled. We suggest that every teacher should be captured in the oracle.

“The government has done very well in physical infrastructure but has not done well in supply of instructional materials and statutory records to schools. It is an impediment to effective teaching and learning in schools.”

At the event, Governor Dickson was represented by his deputy, Rear Admiral John Jonah (rtd), who was accompanied by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief Talford Ongolo, Commissioner for Youths, Mr. Collins Cocodia and other members of the cabinet.

But the governor later met with the teachers at the Banquet Hall where they feast. Dickson used the occasion to further reel off his achievements in the educational sector. He said his over N25 billion investments in the sector and the dedication of teachers yielded positive results.

According to him, the state which used to be very poor in external examination was ranked 4th in the federation in the last Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, (SSSCE).

He said the report released recently by the West African Examinations Council, (WAEC), named the six leading states as, Anambra 65.92 per cent, Abia 58.52 per cent, Edo 57.82 per cent, Bayelsa 52.83 per cent, Rivers 52.73 per cent and Enugu 51.91 per cent.

He said: “The development necessitated the declaration of a state of emergency in the sector and the government has invested N25 billion so far in the last three-and- half years to revamp the sector.”

He enjoined the teachers to always do their utmost, stating that his administration will continually address their welfare as well as improve the infrastructure in the sector.

Dickson, who praised teachers for their contributions to the growth and development of society, assured that in the next two weeks, the Teachers Training Academy would be inaugurated to train and re-train teachers to excel in their various professions.

Describing the teaching profession as crucial in nation-building, the governor warned school principals against extortion of students under the guise of the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) fees. He further stressed that the government has been picking the bills for such fees to alleviate the plight of parents and wards.

Responding, Okechukwu expressed gratitude to the state government for the prompt payment of salaries to workers, despite the austere times. He also praised government’s approval for the payment of arrears of N18, 000 minimum wages.

He pledged the union’s total support for Dickson’s re-election bid to enable the restoration government to consolidate on its achievements.

  • Residents appeal for better roads

Residents of Jiwa community in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have appealed to the incoming FCT administration to rehabilitate the main road linking the community to Dei-dei and Gwagwa-Karmo communities.

Mr. Hassan Musa, who spoke with Abuja Review, said that the poor road has presented serious challenges to the people, with motorists often trapped for hours in traffic gridlock when it rains.

According to Musa, the residents of the communities have written many letters to the FCTA and even to media organisations just to attract the FCT administration to the roads and the plight of the residents, but nothing has been done to alleviate their suffering.

He appealed to the incoming FCT Minister to include the rehabilitation of the road in the FCT budget when the new administration takes effect, saying that if the road is rehabilitated, it will reduce the suffering of the people and also improve on the economic development of the council.

Another resident of the community, Mr. Alhassan Mohammed, also said that the dilapidated state of the road is affecting the businesses in the communities, as Dei-Dei, Gwagwa and Karmo communities are the most flourishing business areas in the FCT.

“The internally generated revenue gotten from these communities are more than any community in the FCT,  the largest timber and building materials markets are in this communities,  but the road that leads to this markets are dilapidated and gradually becoming inaccessible.

“That is why we are appealing to the incoming administration to consider the rehabilitation of this road, so that things will go well for everybody within and outside these communities. We have been going through hell as a result of the bad road, mostly when it rains, the government should come to our rescue so that we can have peace,” he said.

  • APC: PDP mess must be cleared for better life

APC: PDP mess must be cleared for better life

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has listed new instances of the alleged looting of the treasury by some officials of the Dr Goodluck Jonathan administration.

The party, in a statement in Abuja yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said: ‘’Those who would rather give comfort to the looters by dismissing the media exposure of looting cases as mere hell-raising should realise that no sane person can be silent in the face of what is unfolding as the worst cases of brazen stealing of public funds in Nigeria’s history.’’

The party’s statement reads: ‘’On August 16, 2015, we listed some instances of the breath-taking looting of the treasury by some officials of the immediate past administration. Today, we bring three more heart-rendering cases to the attention of Nigerians. We will not relent until closure has been brought to this issue,’’ it said, listing the new cases as:

    • A mind-shattering $2.2 billion-arms scandal.
    • A $6.9 million-fraud by the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to President Jonathan, committed under the guise of buying three mobile stages for the ex-President.
    • A N2.5 billion-scam involving the renting of house boats.

‘’While those charged with handling these cases are finalising the details of bringing the suspects to justice, our immediate concern is the attempt by the PDP, under whose umbrella the looting took place, to blame the Buhari administration for the mess and then infer that things have been worse in Nigeria in the past three months under the APC-led Federal Government than in the 16 years under the PDP. This is totally provocative, shameless and uncharitable.

‘’They say we are yet to fulfil our campaign promises to Nigeria, but they have forgotten that if only the PDP/Jonathan administration had not stolen Nigeria blind, there would have been more than enough money to give school children in Nigeria not just one but three meals a day and even pay N5,000 to 50 million most vulnerable Nigerians, not just the 25 million we promised in our manifesto,’’ APC said

“Despite the almost daily discovery of cases of corruption under the Jonathan administration, the party assured Nigerians of better days ahead, as all its campaign promises will be kept because of the commitment and determination of President Buhari not only to cleaning the Augean Stable but also ensuring purposeful governance for the benefit of Nigerians.

‘’It is clear to Nigerians that the debilitating impact of 16 years of PDP’s misrule cannot be reversed in just three months. It is an obvious truth that it is always easier to destroy than to construct, but nothing will stand in the way of the Buhari administration’s commitment to improving the quality of life of Nigerians and making our country to function again,’’ it said.

It said a major cog in the wheel of faster progress for the new Nigeria under President Buhari has been the discovery that the pot housing the commonwealth has been licked dry by the looters of yesterday, hence the need to work meticulously to recover the looted funds and facilitate the delivery of good governance that will manifest in abundant jobs, strong economy and improved welfare and security for Nigerians.

APC said while the PDP, ever steeped in the pursuit of lies, presents the recently released data on job creation and economic growth as ‘clear signals’ that President Muhammadu Buhari was failing Nigerians, the disgraced party mischievously omitted the fact that those numbers were basically a manifestation of the disastrous final days of ex-President Jonathan’s failed economic policies.

‘’The PDP omitted the fact that these numbers measure job creation and economic growth for the second quarter of 2015, which covers April to June 2015, a period in which ex-President Jonathan was in office for two months while President Buhari was only just settling in to discover even more of the mess left for him to clear. No one in his or her right mind will hold someone more accountable for actions in just one month and exonerate another who was in the same office for two months.

‘’Since the PDP has become insular to global events, the APC will also like to educate the party that every country in the world is struggling to adjust to the effects of a global downturn at the moment. Only very few countries, if any, are growing as fast as they did, in say two years ago. From China, India, Russia, South Africa, to Ghana, Malaysia and Brazil, every country is feeling the effects of a sustained slowdown in global growth.

‘’The APC will also like to categorically say that it supports the policies of the CBN in its quest to ensure greater transparency in the forex market and eliminate currency substitution in our economy. The CBN’s policy to stop cash deposits of foreign currency is in line with global best practices and has led to a drastic reduction in BDC exchange rate for the Dollar.”

  • Better days back for teachers?

    Better days back for teachers?

Nigerian Breweries PLC appears to have rekindled the hope of many teachers, with its N50 million social marketing investment through Maltina Teacher of the Year Award. But how far can it go in promoting excellence in the educational sector, knowing that Cadbury-Schweppes stopped its cause-marketing investment on Bournvita Teachers’ Awards, which it started in 2002? ADEDEJI ADEMIGBUJI writes.

The new corporate social investment by Nigerian Breweries Plc, for the promotion of excellence among teachers, is long overdue. The last of such social marketing investment was by Cadbury-Schweppes, which, for over six years, sponored the Bournvita Teachers Award.

The Cadbury, which perhaps Nigerian Breweries is taking a cue from, rewarded many teachers with training abroad, among other prizes, hence, sparking the spirit of competition among teachers across the country. But since the beverage giant suspended the social marketing investment, many teachers wondered why the multinational brand had to stop what marketing experts had described as a case study in the marketing communication industry.

While Cadbury-Schweppes established the Bournvita Teachers’ Awards in 2002, to promote and celebrate excellence in teaching, award-winning teachers received computer, cash prizes, Cadbury products, and an award certificate, among other, motivational materials, to enhance the chain reaction of such excellence on pupils and students.

The awards received great acclaim from teachers while it lasted. With positive media reviews and endorsement, the corporate social investment, no doubt, enhanced the brand reputation of Cadbury and also deepened its penetration among teachers who are influencers in the chain of consumer decision process.

However, since the programme was suspended without any reason from the sponsor of the project, no brand thought of investing their marketing fund on such cause; perhaps, as a result of the huge investment and efforts in enhance a 360 degree marketing campaign for the cause.

”Such project requires so much marketing budget and the effort that goes into enhancing participation across the federation is huge,” a Public Relations expert, who worked with Freddie Scot & Associates, the PR agency that managed the campaign, told The Nation.

However, a new brand in the beverage sector and a top marketing spender, Nigerian Breweries, has announced plans to splash over N50 million corporate social investments on teachers, in a renewed effort to promote excellence among teachers. Using one of its premium Ready-To-Drink (RTD) brand, Maltina, as the platform to deepen the campaign across 36 states, where the Maltina brand is an household name, the initiative, called “The Maltina Teacher-of-the-Year,” is being funded under the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund.

Established as non-for-profit organisation in 1994, foundation through its pool of social marketing funds has driven some of NB’s corporate social responsibility projects in other sectors for sometime but now finds its appalling that the educational sector is in a dire state, hence taken a step further to assist government in alleviating the problems in the sector by instituting “Maltina Teacher-of-the-Year Award” initiative.

Ohiwerei is the first indigenous Chairman of the leading beverage conglomerate which has been operating in the country since 1946. The Trust Fund started operation with a seed capital of N100 million, to contribute to the development of educational sector in the country. Over the years, the company has used the fund to assist over 20,000 students, built 250 classrooms and 22 libraries in both primary and secondary schools across 49 communities in the country.

Speaking to reporters in Lagos, the Corporate Affairs Adviser of NB, Mr. Kufre Ekanem, said from the social investment, CSR project estimated at N50million as prizes and incentives yearly to reward innovation, commitment and diligence to duty by outstanding teachers across the country. He added that the award which, the Nigerian Breweries-Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund is sponsoring on the platform of his company’s premium ready-to-drink (RTD) malt drink brand, Maltina is aimed at restoring the pride of teachers and the dignity of the teaching profession.

Ekanem stated further that the Maltina Teacher-of-the-Year Award initiative is designed to recognie, celebrate and motivate teachers in Nigeria, with a first year focus on secondary schools. “We hope that through this initiative, we can inspire this nation to accord our teachers their deserved credit and bring back respect to the teaching profession in Nigeria,” Ekanem said, adding that the objective of the award is to create an avenue where exceptional teachers will be showcased and rewarded yearly and continuously.

He explained how the Maltina Teacher-of-the-Year Award project will be executed, the qualification for entry requirements, and a little expose on judging criteria. According to him, collection of application forms has since opened on Wednesday, May 20, 2015 when NB kicked off the project.

He disclosed further that collection and submission of entry forms for the award will last till Tuesday, June 30, 2015. He said hard copies of entry forms for the award can be obtained from designated collection and submission points as contained in the Maltina Teacher-of-the-Year Award initiative’s flyers, posters and other below-the-line (BTL) advertising materials being circulated across the country. For those who are unable to lay their hands on the hard copies, he advised such interested teachers to download the application forms from the Maltina website, www.maltina-nigeria.com, complete the application and upload to the site or return a printed copy of a completed entry form and submit them via the company’s post office mail box.

Ekanem affirmed that all applications will be subjected to an intense selection and judging process by an external and independent panel of judges which has been constituted to ensure transparency, credibility and objectivity of the exercise. The five-step evaluation process of the entries received, he noted, will result in 37 state and FCT champions, from among which 37 state champions will emerge from which the Maltina Teacher- of- the- Year will emerge.

The state champions and national winners will be celebrated at a grand ceremony on Monday, October 5, this year, a day set aside by the United Nations to mark the World Teachers Day.

According to Ekanem, while first runners up and winners state levels will be rewarded with N500,000 and N750,000, 10 winners from the states who will be shortlisted for the grand finale will also get addition N750,000 each for advancing to the final stage.

The national winner (who emerged the Maltina Teacher-of-the-Year Award) will get N1 million while another N1 million will be paid into his/her account yearly for five years. The Teacher of the Year will also be sent abroad for training.

The first runner-up will take home N1 million, while the second runner-up gets N750, 000.  Winners from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, (FCT) will be given N500,000 each. The school that produces the national winner will also become a beneficiary of infrastructural development projects.

The award has generated an unprecedented interest from teachers across the country. Reports from collation centres across the country indicate that hundreds of secondary school teachers are enthusiastically submitting entries for the coveted award.

The CSR/Sustainability Manager, NB, Emete Tonukari, said the social investment is aimed at promoting excellence in the sector.

Beyond the investment on teachers, the yearly teachers’award is expected to also leverage Maltina brand exposure, especially with the  endorsement it received from the Federal Ministry of Education.

Speaking during the visit of Nigerian Breweries Plc’s management team to the Ministry in Abuja recently, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry,  Dr. MacJohn Nwaobiala said the Ministry is happy with NB for initiating such social marketing project.

“We commend Nigerian Breweries for introducing Maltina Teacher of Year, a reward programme that seeks to recognise, reward and train teachers. It is our hope that this effort by Nigerian Breweries will encourage other corporate organisations to identify and support the Ministry’s programmes geared towards development of the education sector in Nigeria,” he said.

Nwaobiala, who welcomed the Nigerian Breweries Management team led by Ekanem to the Ministry as part of sensitisation for the Maltina Teacher of the Year project, added: “The Maltina Teacher of the Year programme because it aligns perfectly with our vision to bring back the glory days when teaching was a respectable profession and people took pride in teaching. We all must join hands to bring dignity and prestige to teachers if we want to see improvement in our education system.”

He pledged the Ministry’s support to ensure the success of the programme. He called on teachers nationwide to take advantage of the Maltina Teacher of Year to improve their career.

While the aim of the project is understandable, experts believe Maltina, a premium brand from the staple of Nigerian Breweries will enjoy massive exposure for as long as the brewer sustains the project.
