  • Journalists assured of better conditions

kano State Commissioner for Information, Comrade Mohammed Garba, has promised to facilitate the provision of the state-of- the-art equipment to media houses, to enhance efficiency in management.

Garba, the outgoing president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), noted that there was need for the provision of modern equipment and facilities to media organisations, to compete with the global practice.

The commissioner, who addressed reporters yesterday, decried the lack of modern equipment, not only in Kano, but in the country, stressing that his greatest challenge, despite the state’s prevailing financial constraint, was to ensure that media outfits were equipped with modern facilities “to assist our colleagues and ensure effective discharge of their responsibilities.”

He said he was concerned about training and re-training of journalists, noting that the profession was dynamic, as a lot of changes were ongoing in the media, particularly the incursion of the social media.

Garba stressed the need for the intensification of training and retraining of journalists, pointing out that “it is only by training and re-training that our colleagues can discharge their social responsibilities, as expected by the people and as entrenched in the constitution.

“By virtue of my position as the former president of the NUJ, I am aware of the pathetic working conditions of journalists, not only in Kano, but in the entire country. I want to believe that I should be able to use my experience and influence to ensure that we better the lives of our colleagues, who are working in the state. I also thank God that I will work with a governor, who is media-friendly. I’m sure it will be very easy for us to achieve our goals and aspirations.”

  • ‘My second term ‘ll be better than first term’

‘My second term ‘ll be better than first term’

Correspondent ADEKUNLE JIMOH, who witnessed the swearing in of Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed for a second term, examines the challenge that will confront the administration and how the governor intends to tackle them.

It was a colourful ceremony. Yet, it was a low-key event. Kwara State Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed was basking in the euphoria of victory. At the Metropolitan Square, Ilorin, the state capital, All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters were jubilating.

Scores of police men and other para-military security personnel were on hand to ensure their protection.

The Senator from Kwara North, Alhaji Shaaba Lafiagi, Speaker of the House of Assembly, a member of the House Representatives, Alhaji Zakari Mohammed, ex-sports minister Mallam Bolaji Abdullah, and other dignitaries witnessed the ceremony.

The Chief Judge, Justice Suleiman Kawu, administered the oath on the governor and his deputy at noon.

Indeed, May 29, the ‘Democracy Day,’ was a historic day.  Attesting to this, the governor said Kwara has re-elected a progressive administration. He paid tribute to his predecessor, Senator Bukola Saraki, other party leaders and the people for reposing a huge confidence in him.

Ahmed said:  “I address you today humbled by your confidence in me, aware of the tasks that confront us and grateful for your trust.

“On this Democracy Day, we remember the sacrifice of those who fought for our right to express our will, those who sacrificed so we can have a better tomorrow, those who laid the foundation of the democracy that we currently enjoy. For me, this day has added significance.

“On this Democracy day, we welcome a new dawn. Today, we are witnesses to a shift in the national mood from despair to hope; from seeming helplessness to cautious optimism. On this day, we begin the job of building a new Kwara state, one that our people desire, and one that we all deserve.

“I am also grateful to our leader, Senator Bukola Saraki, party stakeholders, members and supporters for finding me worthy to serve as your governor for a second term.”

The governor hailed the electorate for giving him a fresh mandate to build on his first term record. However, he said:  “the real victors are the people who voted us with a conviction that we will do a much better job of making their lives better and more prosperous. And to them, I say a big thank you. By the grace of God, I will not let you down.”

Ahmed urged Kwarans to make sacrifices as the challenges ahead are as enormous as they are daunting.

Said he: “By now, most of you know the challenges we face. Our national economy is on its knees. Global oil prices, the mainstay of our economy, are dropping daily, limiting our ability fulfill our obligations. These challenges are enormous but we refuse to give in to despair. We must all be prepared to tighten our belts, to make sacrifices, and moderate our expectations of government.”

The governor added that his administration’s priority remains the people’s welfare.

Unfolding his plans, he said: “We will build more schools, roads, hospitals, power projects and structures needed to get more of our youths working, businesses growing, food on more tables and greater prosperity for everyone who calls Kwara state home.

“This administration will upscale development and boost entrepreneurship to get a greater number of our youths working. Starting from today, we will begin the work of transforming our state to the North Central’s economic hub.

We will create a new frontier of prosperity where everyone has the opportunity to better their lives subject only to their willingness to apply themselves.

“We intend to enhance functional education and expand access to formal education. We will overhaul an initial 120 secondary schools across the state by building 1,274 new classrooms and rehabilitating 2,000 existing classrooms.

“Also, we will open new campuses for the Kwara State University, KWASU in Ilesha-Baruba with the establishment of the College of Agricultural Science and another one in Osi where we will locate the new College of Architectural and Environmental Studies.

“Furthermore, the International Vocational Center, Ajase-Ipo will be fully equipped and operational this year in line with our determination to provide our youths with critical vocational skills for entrepreneurship.

“In keeping with our determination to bring portable water within the reach of all residents, we will expand the Malete and Okuta Waterworks and begin work on Oyun Water Works to meet the needs of an estimated 180, 470 people in seven communities.

“Also, the final phase of the Ilorin Metropolis Water Reticulation and Distribution Network will be completed to bring piped-water to every connected home in Ilorin and environs.”

On the health sector, he promised to expand the state’s health system with the establishment of two primary health care centers, four comprehensive health centers, and remodeling of an extra five general hospitals across the three senatorial districts.

He said: “We will therefore upscale the existing urban electrification programme with solar streetlights along major access roads in Offa, Omu-Aran, Lafiagi, Patigi, Kaiama, and Share-Tsaragi.

“We will restore existing public-powered streetlights across the Ilorin Metropolis. Still in the power sector, we will complement existing investment strategies with the establishment of a 100-megawatt Independent Power Plant in Kwara North.

    Wikipedia updates Buhari ‘s profile

Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia, has updated the profile of Nigeria’s to-be president, Muhammadu Buhari.

The platform which publishes the biography of personalities around the world, now refers to Buhari as the current President of Nigeria, few hours before inauguration.

It identifies him as “a retired Major General in the Nigerian Army who was Head of State of Nigeria from 31 December 1983 to 27 August 1985, after taking power in a military coup d’état.

The term Buharism is ascribed to the Buhari military government.

“He ran unsuccessfully for the office of President in the 2003, 2007 and 2011 elections. In December 2014, he emerged as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the March 2015 elections.

‘Buhari won the 2015 general election, defeating the incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan. When he took office on 29 May 2015, it marked the first time in Nigeria’s history that an incumbent elected President peacefully transferred power to an elected leader of the opposition.

‘Buhari has stated that he takes responsibility for whatever happened under his watch during his military rule, saying that he cannot change the past. He also describes himself as a ‘converted democrat’.” Wikipedia says.

  • Better seeds, better yields

    Better seeds, better yields

Sustainable improvement of crop productivity is dependent on  seed varieties that have been  adapted to all types of environment. This is one area that the West African Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP) Nigeria has invested in to improve food productivity and turn around the fortunes of farmers. DANIEL ESSIET reports.

Earlier this year, farmers in Benue State suffered crop loss attributed to the  poor quality seeds. Some of them in Otukpo Local Government Area lamented that they did not get high yielding seeds, fertiliser and other inputs. They blamed the poor harvest of crops on the government agricultural representatives who, in their estimation, are not doing enough to distribute inputs through the right channels.

Despite that, the state received good rainfalls, the farmers recorded poor harvest.  Some of them complained of inability to access necessary inputs for high yield production. But, the State Chairman of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Aondona HembeKule, attributed the poor harvest to lack of adequate inputs at the disposal of the commodity farmers, saying: “They (farmers) couldn’t collect their inputs this year. There was a communication gap between the commodity farmers association and AFAN. We are doing everything to bridge the perceived gap so that it doesn’t happen again.”

Of the many factors that keep small-scale farmers poor, quality of seed may be the least understood. A lot of local farmers have been given seeds that promise high yields but fail to produce enough. Sometimes, the results are disastrous.

President, Federated FADAMA Community Association, Lagos State, Alhaji Abiodun Oyenekan has experienced it.

He said there was a time he was using local seeds.  Yields were very low. When new varieties came in, he took advantage of it.

To him, the huge adoption by small farmers in Lagos has resulted in very high yields.  In terms of productivity, he said improved seeds can make a world of difference for small farmers. This is enough to lift farmers out of poverty.

For instance, some farmers get one to three tonnes but with improved varieties they get five to six tonnes per hectare. For him, local seeds are major barriers to agricultural growth. This is because of low yield.

While he owes his present success to improved seeds, the challenge, however, is that improved seeds are not enough to supply the millions of farmers who need them.

Presently, there is lack of trust in local seed markets even for large commercial farmers, some of whom have invested heavily to plant hundreds of acres with high yield hybrids that simply didn’t germinate.

In an  interview with The Nation, the Farm Manager and Agric Technical Advisor, Kaboji Farms Limited, Niger State, Mr  Kobus De Jager  said  the  market lacked  good hybrid seeds  which  is  key to profitable commercial farming.

For watchers, poor seeds make it impossible for farmers to adopt the modern agricultural techniques that lifted millions of farmers out of poverty.

But  an  initiative hopes to change all that by enhancing farmers’ access to improved seeds.

With West Africa Agricultural Productivity Programme (WAAPP-Nigeria)’ support, poor farmers will be able to purchase high quality seed of local food crops

The programme’s   support for the nation’s fledgling private seed sector is part of its comprehensive approach to catalyzing change. This includes supporting the national agricultural research institutions, to develop improved varieties with higher yields to   reach farmers. The step offers hope for small farms by helping ensure that new seed varieties with higher yields make it through the supply chain from breeders to farmers.

Speaking  in  a forum  in Abuja, the National  Coordinator, West  Africa Agriculture Productivity Programme,(WAAPP),Professor Damian Chikwendu  said breeders, industry, farmers and others are  involved in the supply chain, it  is the first viable system for getting a top-down view of where choke points stifle seed access.

With support from WAAPP, Nigeria is strengthening its seed systems as well as its research and technology transfer systems to make farming more resilient.

With the help of the West African Agricultural Productivity Program (WAAPP), some   farmers have been able to revitalize their productivity through the planting of higher yielding varieties.

WAAPP sponsors  research organisations to run experiments to develop higher yielding varieties.  Farmers also benefit from training, study tours, knowledge exchanges between the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) stakeholders, and equipment prototypes during exchange visits, all of which help strengthen their technical capacities.

Chinkwendu  said   getting improved seeds to small farmers is critical to raising agricultural productivity and reducing poverty.

He   added that the main challenges facing the seed sector is equitable access to good quality seed due to poor infrastructure, poor market infrastructure and systems and a variety of logistical challenges.

To ensure farmers have access to improved and adaptable seed varieties, he  said the  programme  was sponsoring  the implementation of  an effective breeding and seed systems approach across the country. He said the programme is promoting partnership to provide information and assist those who want to enter the seed trade sector.

With food demand increasing, reflecting a growing population and  increased consumption, Chikwendu noted  that   a  higher yields will be needed to meet this demand.

In a meeting with some Chief Executives of some Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs),Chikwendu said partnership with the ADPs would continue as long as WAAPP remained and expressed confidence that at the end of the programme, its impact would be felt by Nigerians.

Meanwhile, WAAPP-Nigeria has distributed over 125 bags of rice, sorghum and maize hybrid improved seeds to over 200 farmers in Gombe State for this year’s farming season.

Speaking during the distribution at Baure village in Yamaltu Deba Local Government Area, the Provost, Federal College of Horticulture, Dadin Kowa, Professor Fatima Sawa, said the seeds were freely given to the farmers.

“The seeds are improved, graded specifically for the Northeast ecological zone and from the reports we got from the farmers, the seeds are high-yielding and of better quality than the types our farmers were using before,” she said.

Sawa called on the farmers to use the seeds judiciously. “They should use them by way of planting them and observe all the agronomic practices in order to drive the maximum benefit from the seeds.”She said the college has signed an agreement with a pesticide company to supply the chemical directly to the college, which would  sell the chemical to farmers at a subsidised rate. She said doing so will solve the problem of adulterated chemicals and eliminate middle men who might increase the price.

So far, WAAPP-Nigeria has  signed partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)  with   States Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs).  The WAAPP-sponsored initiatives include Community-based Agricultural Seed Multiplication.  The community-based seed multiplication initiation is aimed at contributing toward seed sufficiency among rural farmers in the country.

To this end, WAAPP-Nigeria has already invested in the production and supply of foundation seeds for cassava, maize, rice, sorghum, and yam to ADPs in  states.  WAAPP’s commitment involves covering the cost of the agricultural seeds, the farm inputs, farmer training, technical assistance, and a mandatory inspection regime by the National Agricultural Seeds Council (NASC), as part of the processes for the production of Certified Seeds which will be available for farmers’ during  the  farming season.  The state ADPs are technical partners in the community-based seed multiplication initiative.

The  Programme Manager, Agriculture Development Programme, Abia State, Mr Eyinnaya Elekwachi, said the local farmers are  benefitting  from  improved seeds   given  by WAAPP, adding  that they  enhance  their productivity and make farming a better business in the state.

Speaking  with The Nation, the WAAPP Desk Officer , Abia State  ADP, Mrs Nnenna  Uche said  farmers  in the  17  local government  areas  of the state have  benefitted  from high yielding  seeds.

These include   certified rice,  maize, yam and cassava seeds to enable farmers increase their productivity. The seeds, he said  were  made  available  to   farmers through  innovation platforms.

The  seeds   were freely given to the farmers and they are of better quality than the local types they  were using before.

According  to  the  Chairman, Cassava Value Chain Innovation Platform, Abia State, Kalu Iche Kalu, several   new cassava varieties have come from collaborative breeding efforts supported by WAAPP and   improved varieties resulting from such works have doubled average crop yields.

Kalu said the impact is great, yielding enormous returns for agro businesses.

Consequently, he said, cassava is one of the most dynamic sub sectors in the  state, helping to drive industrial development while delivering higher incomes to investors. Under the WAAPP Nigeria Programme,  the mandate, he said, is root and tuber, specifically yam and cassava. The platforms are in nine states and have given small holder farmers support on farm inputs such as fertiliser and the top five cassava varieties, including the pro-vitamin A  umu-cass 36,37 and 38.

Under the WAAPP assisted project,  he said the  target in the first phase is to reach out to 300,000 farmers, and  they have reached  167,000.  “This year we are providing seven processing centres across seven states  of which two are almost completed.  Our target is to complete these processing centres before the end of May next year.

To experts, the   seed industry is growing in many ways. But the level of investment in research and development, rate of annual yield gains and overall crop and seed values should be at equal   levels. All these, they believe, will help to maintain growth while sustaining the environment, creating excitement, competition, investment and change in the seed industry.

  • How to eat for better sex

Sexologists, cardiologists, and psychologists agree: how much (and what) you consume has a huge impact on your sexual health.

    Spinach and other Green Vegetables

Spinach is a potent source of magnesium, which helps dilate blood vessels, according to Japanese researchers. Better blood flow to the genitals, as you’ve learned, creates greater arousal for men and women. Spinach and other green vegetables like broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, Swiss chard, and bok choy are also good sources of favorite sex nutrient—folate. Extra insurance for good reproductive health, folate may lower blood levels of a harmful substance called homocysteine.

    Unsweetened Tea

The antioxidant catechin found in tea promotes blood flow all over the body for sex power and brainpower; it enhances memory, mood, and focus. One particularly potent catechin, a compound called ECGC prevalent in green tea, is thought to increase fat burn. A study in the Journal of Nutrition found that people, who consume the equivalent of three to five cups of green tea a day for 12 weeks, experience nearly a five per cent reduction in body weight. Drink freshly brewed green or black tea every day, hot or iced. Bottled teas don’t offer the same benefits. And keep the sugar out of it. Unsweetened tea is an excellent alternative to high-calorie, sugar-laden soft drinks and juices. One 12-ounce can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar in it.

    Peaches and other fruits

If you are looking to add some deductions to your 1040 form, eat more grapefruits, oranges, and peaches. Men, who consume at least 200 milligrammes of Vitamin C a day improve their sperm counts and motility, according to research at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

    Eggs

Over easy, hard-boiled, or scrambled, eggs aren’t the most sensual food on the menu, but it’s hard to beat them for a fit and healthy body inside and out. Eggs are rich in vitamins B6 and B5, which help balance hormone levels and ease stress, and are important for a healthy libido.

    Seeds and Nuts

Pumpkin and sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts, walnuts, and other nuts all contain the necessary monounsaturated fats with which your body creates cholesterol—and your sex hormones need that cholesterol to work properly.

    Beans and Extra Protein

Protein is so important to weight maintenance that you should eat it with every meal and snack. Proteins boost metabolism a little more during digestion than any other type of food. Plus protein increases metabolism by helping to build muscle and stall the muscle loss that naturally happens as we age. Muscle is more metabolically active than fat is, so the more lean muscle on your body the better at burning calories it will be.

    Fatty Fish

If, as doctors like to say, what’s good for your heart is good for your love life, oily coldwater fish like salmon, mackerel, sardines, and tuna should figure heavily into your weekly meal rotation. The omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA found in fish help to raise dopamine levels in the brain that trigger arousal, according to sexologist Yvonne K. Fulbright, PhD. Other health benefits: anti-inflammatory properties that fight blood clots and heart arrhythmias, better brain function, and protection against dementia.

    Oatmeal and Other Whole Grains

Eating oatmeal is one of the few natural ways to boost testosterone in the bloodstream. The male hormone plays a significant role in sex drive and orgasm strength in both men and women. Oats (as well as seeds, ginseng, nuts, dairy, and green vegetables) contain L-arginine, an amino acid that enhances the effect nitric oxide has on reducing blood vessel stiffness. L-arginine has been used to treat erectile dysfunction. Like Viagra, it helps relax muscles around blood vessels in the penis. When they dilate, blood flow increases so a man can maintain an erection. Oatmeal and other whole grains like whole-grain bread, brown rice, and barley also qualify as good-for-the-heart, better-for-the-gut foods.

    Oysters and Other Shellfish

In addition to their reputation as the ultimate aphrodisiac (thanks to their resemblance to female genitalia), raw oysters actually do have a connection to sexual function. Oysters hold more zinc than most any other food, and it is believed that this mineral may enhance libido by helping with testosterone production—higher levels of the hormone are linked to an increase in desire. Zinc is also crucial to healthy sperm production and blood circulation.

FIFA U-20 World Cup:Ezeh hopes to do better

Flying Eagles forward Chidera Ezeh has said he is hoping to have a better World Cup when Nigeria participates at this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

The 17-year old had a rather underwhelming outing at the recently ended Africa Youth Championship, which Nigeria won in Senegal, and the youngster said he is hoping to do better in New Zealand.

“The African championship was good because we won it but maybe I didn’t play up to my best,” he said. “But even if that the coaches encouraged me and I had to listen to them and not what other people were saying.

“But I want to do better at the World Cup; better than I did in Senegal.”

The FC Porto youngster also explained why he had such an underwhelming outing in Senegal.

“I wasn’t feeling very well when we went to that championship but because we had suffered some injuries, I had to go and maybe it affected me a bit.

“The good thing is we won the tournament and I am happy about that and I am now looking forward to the World Cup and I hope I can do better there,” he stated.

Nigeria will play in group E of the U-20 World Cup, and will face Hungary, North Korea and Brazil.
