  • ‘Boroffice isolated himself at APC national convention’

The Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has refuted a statement credited to the senator representing Ondo North, Prof Ajayi Boroffice, that he was denied a tag by leaders of the state’s delegates during last Saturday’s national convention of the party in Abuja.

The party described the claim as “disheartening”.

A statement by Ondo APC’s Publicity Secretary, Alex Kalejaye, said the Chairman of Senate Committee on Science and Technology opted to be with delegates from Jigawa State in their pavilion, instead of the people he represents in the Senate.

Reports quoted the senator as saying: “I stayed away from the state (Ondo) to avoid likely embarrassment…

“I could not even enter with any delegate’s tag because I don’t have one. I was allowed into this venue because I showed my identity card to them at the gate. I decided to sit here among Jigawa delegates to avoid likely embarrassment, if I go to the space provided for Ondo State delegates.”

But the statement wondered why Boroffice, who stayed away from the activities of the state, before and during the event, painted the party’s leadership in such a bad light.

It noted that the delegates from Ondo State, including Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, were screened by agents of the Convention Committee before issuing them tags.

The statement said: “While the screening lasted, I recall that the name of Ajayi Boroffice was called repeatedly without anyone to claim the tag.

“All members of the National Assembly from Ondo State, who are members of our party, have their names on the list. The other two senators, Chief Tayo Alasoadura and Pastor Yele Omogunwa, did attend the screening and collected their tags.

“They also sat with delegates from Ondo State at the same pavilion without any embarrassment.

“In any event, why would the people you are representing want to embarrass you? To the best of our knowledge, a leader deserves to be celebrated by his people, except there is more to it than one could comprehend.”

The statement challenged the senator to explain his “anti-party” offences during the last governorship election in the state and seek forgiveness from the leaders.

It added that the current posture of the party depicts discipline and re-organisation.

  • Boroffice visits injured reporters

The senator representing Ondo North, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice, yesterday urged Inspector- General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris to investigate the attack on reporters in Akure.

Boroffice, chairman, Senate Committee on Science and Technology, appealed to Police Commissioner Gbenga Adeyanju to ensure that the hoodlums, who attacked the reporters, were arrested.

He spoke when he visited the secretariat of the Correspondents Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists in Akure,

The lawmaker condemned the spate of violence in the state.

Boroffice, the Asiwaju of Akoko, urged the police and other security agencies to ensure that the hoodlums were nabbed and prosecuted.

He sympathised with the reporters and wished them quick recovery.

Reporters, including Damisi Ojo, of The Nation, Bamigbola Gbolagunte, of The Sun, Olumide Abudu, of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), and James Sowole, of ThisDay were attacked during the parallel congress of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akure, last Saturday.

  • Boroffice: I stand for elective congress

Senator Ajayi Boroffice (Ondo North) has called for a credible congress, saying party officers should emerge in a credible intra-party elections at the ward, local government, state and national levels.

Boroffice decried “ongoing campaign of disinformation that elective congresses will be jettisoned to pave the way for a mere filling of the vacancies created by death, appointment and defections to other parties”.

The senator said the campaign of calumny and lies smacked of a divisive tendency aimed at discouraging party members eager to participate in the elective congresses.

A statement by his media aide, Kayode Fakuyi, said: “The undemocratic plot to prevent members from voting is not in the best interest of our party. It is also against democratic practices and due process. As a matter of law, it is unknown to extant provisions of the APC constitution. It will not happen in Ondo State, God willing.”

Boroffice added that Ondo APC cannot act contrary to the provisions of the constitutions guiding the congresses in its own interest.

He alleged that some party officials had perfected plans to hoard nomination forms from legitimate members who desire to seek elective positions. He, however, vowed to resist the plot.

Boroffice urged the national leadership to prevail on the congress committees to make the nomination forms available to all.

He said: “The utmost concern is that there should be level playing field for all aspiring party officials. Thus, only a credible election will be acceptable to party members in Ondo State. The National Executive Committee of our great party has decided that there will be no tenure elongation for any officer and the National Working Committee has dispelled fears raised by the notice sent to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on congresses and convention.

“Therefore, party members should be assured that there is no cause for alarm on the matter.”

  • Presidency, Senate rift over electoral bill ‘ll be over soon – Boroffice

The lawmaker repre-senting Ondo north senatorial district at the national assembly, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice, at the weekend, urged traditional rulers particularly in the four local government areas of Akokoland to support him in his bid to bring more developments to the area. Besides, he expressed optimism that the disagreement between the presidency and the Senate over the reordering of 2019 general election would soon be resolved.

Boroffice spoke at Ikaram-Akoko in Akoko North West local government area of Ondo State, during the inauguration of a multi-million skill acquisition centre he constructed. Though he admitted that lawmakers are divided over the issue, he is optimistic that the controversies would soon be resolved in the interest of the nation. “After we passed the bill, some of us, including myself, had a second thought and we are thinking it should be reviewed,” he said.

“This is a democratic society and you’re free to change your mind. This is not a crisis but a difference in opinion. The Senate has a way of resolving its internal differences,” he added. He said the House would explore all areas over the issue before taking a final stand and decision. On the delay in passing the 2018 budget, Boroffice explained that national assembly was working on the document and would pass the appropriation bill into law by end of this month.

He noted that unemployment had become a cankerworm in the country, stressing that the skill acquisition centre would provide employment and turn many graduates to employers of labour. Boroffice said the skill centres would be duplicated in three more locations in the district. The Akala of Ikaram, Oba Andrew Momodu, eulogised Boroffice on behalf of other monarchs in Akoko Northwest.

  • APC: Boroffice worked against Akeredolu’s victory in 2016

THE Ondo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday reacted to a statement credited to the senator representing Ondo North, Ajayi Boroffice, who accused Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) of polarising the ruling party in the state.

The party said the governor did not intervene in the affairs of the party, adding that its affairs were being run by the party’s leadership, led by Ade Adetimehin.

A statement by Ondo APC’s Director of Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, said the claim that people were leaving the ruling party was a figment of the senator’s imagination.

The statement said the residents were trooping into the ruling party to the extent that the opposition in the state had collapsed into APC.

It added: “Boroffice is alone in this illusion that critical mass of our party leadership and members are leaving; which could best be described as a product of his desperation to govern the state at all costs.

“This same ambition had pitched him against his former party leader and governor in the Labour Party (LP).

“It would baffle any member of the party in the state to hear Boroffice claiming to have worked tirelessly for the governor to win the election when he never, at any time, appeared at the electioneering campaigns of the governor.

“This is a senator who is at National Assembly on the platform of APC, yet he is fighting the governor and the party chairman in the state, Adetimehin, as well as contravening the decision of the national leadership of the party, led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun.”

The statement wondered if Boroffice was referring to Akeredolu as a controversial candidate, after one year in office, and still claimed to have worked tirelessly and voted for him.

The party noted that it remained irreconcilable why Boroffice, who allegedly sent a congratulatory message to the governor through the media – following his victory at the poll – did not attend the inauguration of the governor.

It said: “At this point, it is expedient to ask Boroffice to swear by the God he serves that he truly worked and voted for Arakunrin Akeredolu at the poll.

“Senator Boroffice should know that it is God who chooses who should lead His people, bearing in mind that Akeredolu is the governor of the state today, despite the fact he (Boroffice) and his cohorts worked tirelessly against the victory of our great party, APC, at the Ondo State governorship poll on the November 26, 2016.

“It is incontrovertible that Boroffice, who came a distant fourth in the party’s primaries, immediately ordered his supporters to move en mass to the opposition party, but being a sitting senator on the platform of our party, APC, he could not openly canvass for the opposition. He, however, engaged in anti-party activities behind closed-doors.

“Today, if not for the fact that the governor was magnanimous in victory, the speed at which the strength of the party is being built would not have been possible as many of the party stalwarts, who had hitherto defected to other parties, had returned to our party.

“Chief Olusola Oke (SAN) disclosed at the unification rally held by our party that if not for the magnanimity of the governor, his return to APC would not have been possible.

“The National Chairman of our party, Chief Odigie-Oyegun, also confirmed this stance of the governor at ensuring unity among party members, when he praised Akeredolu at the unification rally in Akure on his first year anniversary in office, on his home-grown reconciliatory efforts of unifying all interest groups within the party in the state.

“That Senator Boroffice is just reacting to the unification rally, after several weeks, arouses suspicion. It is no longer a secret that Senator Boroffice is not only currently sponsoring meetings against our party but already on his way out of the party because he knows he has slim chances of winning the next primaries to return to the Senate the third time due to his depleting popularity among the people of Ondo Northern Senatorial District.

“Besides, he could not see how he could execute his governorship ambition on the platform of APC, having been intimidated by the iconic legacy projects being embarked upon by Akeredolu as well as his stunning performance within the first year in office, which has changed the entire landscape of the state.”

  • I haven’t committed anti-party activities, says Boroffice

Senator explains why crisis persists in Ondo APC

An All Progressives Congress (AP) chieftain in Ondo State, Senator Ajayi Boroffice, has denied allegations of anti-party activities against him.

He affirmed his loyalty to the party.

The senator representing Ondo North said Governor Rotimi Akeredolu’s attack on his personality was unwarranted.

He urged the governor to separate facts from fiction.

In a statement by his media aide, Kayode Fakuyi, the senator said he had always supported Akeredolu in the best interest of Ondo State, “despite the underlying differences”.

He recalled rallying his colleagues in the Senate to support the governor when he sent two private communications to the Upper Chamber.

According to him, Akeredolu has never carried him along on any party matter since he assumed office last year.

The statement said: “The governor has not extended any invitation to him, let alone turning down any of such invitation to attend any meeting or an APC’s events since Arakunrin Akeredolu became governor of Ondo State.”

The expert in Human Genetics and Zoology also said he added value to his district through his legislative activities and the infrastructural facilities he has attracted to the senatorial district.

Boroffice recalled that despite the controversy surrounding Akeredolu’s candidacy in 2016, he (senator) worked tirelessly for APC’s victory in the November poll.

The senator chided the governor for alleged intolerance, saying his attitude to other party leaders in the state, especially who did not see things from his perspective, had polarised the chapter and alienated critical mass of the party’s leadership and supporters.

He added: “All is not well with the APC chapter in the Sunshine State, and rather than for Governor Akeredolu to embrace the challenges of leadership and reach out to every leader of this party in Ondo State, he prefers to run the party and government of Ondo State with his trifling followership and continues to assert that he alone owns this party and that others can go to hell. He continues to threaten others with expulsion from the party.”

The senator urged APC national leadership to intervene in the party’s crisis in Ondo State.

He noted that issues that polarised the chapter should not be swept under the carpet.

Boroffice said: “It is for this reason His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, has called for reconciliation of leaders and resolutions of disputed issues. This is the wise road to travel and we cannot dissent. We fully support our National Leader, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu, on this course.”

  • ‘Boroffice remains committed to APC’

    ‘Boroffice remains committed to APC’

Youths in Ondo State, under the aegis of Progressives Youth League (PYL), yesterday expressed the commitment of the senator representing Ondo North, Prof Ajayi Boroffice, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The group was reacting to a statement credited to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) while addressing reporters after the unification rally marking his first year in office that Boroffice was not an APC senator.

Of the three senators from the state who are members of the ruling APC, only Chief Tayo Alasoadura, representing Ondo Central, attended the week-long anniversary activities.

The two other lawmakers – Boroffice (North) and Yele Omogunwa (South) – were absent.

A statement by its Coordinator, Akinsola Olagbegi, said the governor was not more committed to the ideals and ideologies of APC than Boroffice.

It said: “Obviously, the governor’s remark is misleading. The remark has the potency to reignite and trigger conflicts and crises within the APC in the state.

“Like the media reported, Senator Boroffice is a member of the APC. His membership of the APC is not subject of debate and discord. It is incontestable.

“As the 2019 general elections get nearer, we believe all party leaders and members should set aside individual differences in order to work in unison for the electoral success of the party at all levels. The APC is big enough for all party members to operate.

“Finally, we wish to express confidence in the Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led presidential committee, which has the mandate to ensure reconciliation and confidence-building towards improving cohesion within the party.

“The reconciliatory committee should make Ondo the priority on the list of states to be visited. The intervention of the committee is essential to energise the support base and strength of the party.”
