ICONIC  IDEYE: Ex- Super Eagles star hangs boots after stellar career

The former Super Eagles striker, who won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and played for clubs in some of the world’s top leagues, leaves behind a career defined by goals, resilience, controversy, and unforgettable memories, JOHNNY EDWARD writes

When Brown Ideye announced his retirement this week, an era quietly came to an end. For nearly two decades, the Super Eagles striker carried the hopes of clubs and country, scoring goals from Yenagoa to Kyiv, from the English Premier League to the Greek Super League.

The 36-year-old confirmed the decision on his social media handles, saying it was one of the hardest calls of his life.

“After much thought and consideration, with mixed emotions, I’ve decided to retire from professional football,” Ideye wrote.

“I want to thank God for the talent and the long career I’ve enjoyed. To my family, teammates, coaches, and the fans — thank you for everything.”

    A voyage across continents

Ideye’s career is the story of persistence. He first made his name at Ocean Boys FC before heading abroad to Neuchâtel Xamax in Switzerland after excelling with the Flying Eagles team at the FIFA U-20 World Cup.

His rise was steady — with Sochaux in France and Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine, where his goals made him a household name.

“Brown was a striker who always delivered when it mattered,” one Dynamo Kyiv supporter recalled in the Ukrainian press. “He gave us big goals in Europe, and we never doubted his fight.”

In 2014, West Bromwich Albion paid £10m to sign him — their record transfer fee at the time.

Though he struggled to fully justify the price tag, scoring seven goals in 31 appearances, he remained respected for his work rate and commitment.

“England was tough,” Ideye later confessed. “I gave my best, but sometimes things don’t go the way you want. Still, I’ll always be proud to have played in the Premier League.”

His most prolific spell came at Olympiacos in Greece, where he scored 28 goals in 65 matches and won back-to-back league titles in 2016 and 2017.

“Playing for Olympiacos was one of the best times of my career,” he said. “The fans, the trophies, the Champions League nights — those are memories I’ll never forget.”

A stint in China with Tianjin Teda spells in Spain with Málaga, and later moves to Turkey, and Kuwait highlighted his globetrotting career.

    Wearing Nigeria’s  jersey with pride

For Nigeria, Ideye will forever be remembered as part of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team under the late Stephen Keshi.

He scored in the semi-final against Mali and played in the 1-0 final victory over Burkina Faso that restored Nigeria’s pride after years in the wilderness.

The late Keshi, who coached him then, once praised him publicly: “Brown works for the team. He sacrifices, he runs, and he never hides. That is why I trust him.”

In total, he earned 27 caps for the Super Eagles, scoring six goals. “Thank you, Nigeria, for the opportunity you gave me to wear the national colour and be among the Super Eagles,” he said in his farewell note

    Shadows of Controversy

While at Dynamo Kyiv, Ideye was accused by Ukrainian businesswoman Yana Voloshchenko of fathering two children with her and neglecting them. He strongly denied the allegations.

“I don’t have a second family anywhere,” he said at the time. “These are lies meant to destroy my name.”

The claims resurfaced in 2025, stirring renewed debate, though Ideye has consistently maintained his innocence.

    Row with Enyimba

His return to Nigeria with Enyimba ended in bitterness. Ideye accused the club of poor welfare and unpaid bonuses.

“Because I get money, I should not ask for the one I worked for?” Ideye fumed. “Please pay me and the players last season’s match bonuses. The season ended in May; till now, nothing.”

He also highlighted the meagre allowances players received on a podcast show.

“At Enyimba, we were receiving N7,000 or N8,000 a day. On match days, nothing. Bonuses were held until the end of the season. I couldn’t believe it,” he said.

Enyimba’s management rejected the claims, firing back that the striker “failed to live up to expectations” despite being “well compensated.”

    Life after football

In July 2025, Ideye began a new chapter as Director of Player Pathways and Partnerships at Atlantic Business Football Club.

“Though my time as a professional player has come to an end, football will always be a part of my life,” he said. “Now I want to mentor the next generation and help them avoid the mistakes I made.”

    Legacy in Nigerian Football*

From Yenagoa’s grassroots to AFCON glory, from a record-breaking move to England to titles in Greece, Ideye’s career embodied both triumph and turbulence

As one Super Eagles teammate once summed him up: “Brown may not always get the headlines, but he gave his blood and sweat for the team. That’s his legacy.”

Yes, there were controversies, injuries, and missed chances. But when the story of Nigerian strikers is told, Brown Ideye’s name will sit comfortably alongside the best of his generation.

Ideye slams Napoli’s controversial clause in Osimhen to  Gala

Former Super Eagles attacker Brown Ideye has condemned  controversial clause reportedly inserted by Napoli in Victor Osimhen’s transfer deal to Galatasaray, raising eyebrows across the football world.

The  clause  will reportedly prevents Galatasaray from selling Osimhen to any Italian club for the next two years. This unusual stipulation has sparked widespread debate — and Ideye, a seasoned forward with over two decades in the game, did not hold back in his criticism.

“In my 20 years of professional football, I have never seen or heard this type of clause,” Ideye stated. “Galatasaray can’t sell a player they bought for 2 years to any Italian club. What is Napoli scared of?”

His comments reflect a growing sentiment that this move by Napoli goes beyond normal transfer protocol. The Nigerian striker hinted at a deeper motive behind the clause, suggesting the Italian side may be trying to protect themselves from a potential return of Osimhen to Serie A via a rival club.

Meanwhile, Osimhen is expected to earn a lot more than the reported salary of 18 Million Euros a year in his new contract with Galatasaray.

The striker earned 12 Million Euros for the season-long loan at the Turkish champions.

According to Turkish journalist Razim Ozan Kutahyal, the striker could pocket as much as 30 Million Euros a year through his salary, sponsorships and image rights.

He further reported that the Turkish government is offering tax breaks to football clubs like Galatasaray for this purpose.

Ideye challenges NPFL on Nigeria’s representation in continental cups

Newly signed Enyimba International striker Brown Ideye has hinted that a lot has to be done for Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) to be regarded as a  topflight league.

Ideye who re-joined the NPFL over a decade after playing for Ocean Boys, said  organisers of the league must tight all loose ends and make the league more attractive for players and officials before the nation can address the dwindling fortunes of Nigerian clubs on the continent.

His comments came after Enyimba’s 2-0 loss to Kwara United, which marked the team’s third consecutive defeat in all competitions, their worst losing run since July 2022.

Ideye’s revelation highlights the struggles faced by the NPFL, which has been plagued by various issues. The loss to Kwara United was a significant setback for Enyimba, and Ideye’s comments suggest that the team’s problems run deeper than just their recent form.

According to Ideye, despite enjoying his time at Enyimba, he is disheartened by the league’s shortcomings, particularly with regards to player welfare: “The system is getting worse, the league is not getting better. I feel like we have a long way to go. My time with Enyimba has been wonderful but a lot of things in the league has to improve.”

Ideye emphasized that the NPFL is not yet ready to compete at the continental level. He pointed out that Nigerian teams often struggle in international competitions due to inadequate preparation: “We are not ready to compete continentally. The Nigerian teams who qualify for continental tournaments, if they want to say the truth, ask them how they prepare for the games.”

He  highlighted several areas that need improvement, including travel arrangements, food, accommodation, and player relaxation. He stressed that these issues must be addressed before Nigerian teams can hope to succeed in international competitions.

He said:  “Travelling is bad, feeding is bad, hotel accommodation is bad, player relaxation is bad. We should put our house together before going to play continentally instead of going there to disgrace ourselves.”
