Outrage spreads as Buhari, others caution Jonathan

Public outrage over the withdrawal the security detail of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, continued yesterday with presidential aspirant and national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) cautioning President Goodluck Jonathan against abuse of the Principle of Separation of Powers.

A statement issued by the Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO) said intruding in the affairs of a legislative house which on its own accord adjourned its sitting, would amount to rigging the 2015 general elections.

The statement, signed by BCO’s spokesman, Comrade Osita Okechukwu, said: “The Buhari Campaign Organisation pleads with President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, to use his good offices as the C-in-C to protect and guarantee the security of Rt. Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, the Speaker of House of Representatives.

“We are making this passionate appeal following the less than elegant manner his security details were withdrawn by the Inspector General of Police, and exposing him to danger.

” It is our candid view that Hon. Tambuwal as of today remains the valid Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. If this is the case, he should enjoy all the privileges and perquisites of the office.

” We opine that the greatest disservice to our fledgling democracy will be when we deliberately expose our public officers to harm’s way and when the executive fragrantly invades other arms of government in utter violation of the doctrine of separation of powers.”

The statement reminded the President of the promise he has made at different times to Nigerians and friends of the nation to oversee free and fair 2015 general elections.

“If this promise is genuine, then The Buhari Campaign Organisation is compelled to remind you that election is a process,” the statement said..

It added: “If you agree with us that election is a process, then intruding in the affairs of a legislative house which has on its own accord adjourned its sitting, will amount to rigging the 2015 general elections via the back door.

” From all indications it seems Hon. Tambuwal is being hunted for defecting to our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). Assuming this is the case, then we appeal that due process and rule of law should be strictly adhered to in the collective interest of our dear nation.

“The Buhari Campaign Organisation would be very sad to witness the ugly and sordid tale of our recent past when Harry Marshal, Rt. Hon. Chuba Okadigbo, Chief Bola Ige and a host of others died in controversial circumstances, and up till date, their killers have not been found.”

    Plot to

    eliminate Speaker

In his own reaction, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, described the action of the IG as a plot by the Federal Government to kill Tambuwal.

This was as the first Executive Governor of the old Kaduna State, Alhaji Abdulkadir Balarabe Musa said the Police was acting President Goodluck Jonathan’s script.

El-Rufai accused President Jonathan of masterminding the removal of Tambuwal’s security aides, alleging that the Speaker was one of the targets of snipers being purportedly groomed by the President.

According to him, ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo had in his open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan last year alleged that the President was grooming snipers that would target some prominent Nigerians.

Warning that no harm must befall the Speaker, the former minister noted that it was irresponsible of the Inspector-General of Police and the Federal Government to have withdrawn the security details of the Speaker.

He argued that the withdrawal was done to pave way for the “killer squad” to exterminate the Speaker for defecting to the All Progressives Congress.

He described the removal of the Speaker’s security details as part of the continuation of the Jonathan government’s penchant for impunity.

The former Minister, however, reminded the government that impunity has limitations, saying that the Nigerian government should learn from what happened in ‘Burkina Faso’ when the people were fed up with the government.

He said: “The withdrawal of Tambuwal’s security aides is on the orders of President Goodluck Jonathan. The IG doesn’t act that way. The President ordered the IG to order the removal. It is just the continuation of ‘Jonathanian impunity’.

“This people have no respect for the law. They have no respect for rules. They think they are in power to abuse their control of coercive instruments of power, and we should warn them that impunity has limits. If anything happens to Tambuwal(Speaker), the whole world will hold them responsible.

“He (Speaker) was on the list of those to be wiped out by snipers. So, if anything happens to him, we know that it was done intentionally so that this will succeed.

“They should look across Burkina Faso and see what is happening when a government overstays its welcome or engages in wanton impunity. They should learn from history. I think it is very irresponsible on the part of IG and the government to do that.”

Balarabe Musa said the Police were acting President Goodluck Jonathan’s script, arguing that the Speaker is still entitled to all his aides, including security until members of the House remove him as their leader.

Balarabe Musa also faulted the police for interpreting the law, which he said was not their constitutional duty.

  • Obasanjo, Buhari differ on ‘same religion’ ticket

Obasanjo, Buhari differ on ‘same religion’ ticket

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo disagreed yesterday with the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential aspirant, General Muhammadu Buhari, on the place of religion in determining how a party should pick its presidential and vice presidential candidates for next year’s election.

Buhari said Nigerians genuinely need a President and a vice-president who would place Nigeria first and pull it out of the brinks, regardless of whether or not both are Muslims or Christian.

But Obasanjo noted that a Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian presidential ticket at this time of the nation’s precarious unity was not only absurd but also out of tune with the present Nigeria.

The former President, who was apparently reacting to Buhari’s position, said: “It will be insensitive to the point of absurdity for any leader or any party to be toying with a Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian ticket at this juncture.”

Buhari, a former Head of State and three times a presidential candidate, told The Cable, an online media, that he saw nothing wrong with a Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian ticket.

The APC aspirant said his position did not make him a “fundamentalist”.

He said: “I had demonstrated to Nigerians that I’m not a fundamentalist and there is nothing more I can do. Nigerians will always uncover impossible room for manoeuvre for politicians. I had to face one of the governors during one of our party’s meetings (over the issue of religion).

“In 2003, I chose (the late Senator) Chuba Okadigbo as my running mate. He was a Roman Catholic. He was an Igbo. In 2007, I picked Edwin Ume-Ezeoke. He was a Roman Catholic. He was an Igbo. And in 2010, I chose even a pastor – Tunde Bakare.

“Honestly, what do Nigerians want me to do? If they don’t believe I’m not a fundamentalist, what else can I do?

“How about (the late Bashorun) Moshood Abiola, a Southern Muslim, who picked Babagana Kingibe, a Northern Muslim, as running mate in the 1993 presidential election? The Muslim-Muslim ticket went on to win an election that is still considered by many as the most credible in Nigeria’s history.

“I have not absolutely closed my mind to picking a Christian or Muslim as running mate, if I get the ticket. This is because I firmly believe that Nigerians, having gone through what they have gone through, realise it is not a matter of religion but a matter of Nigeria.

“The main religions – Christianity and Islam – know and they believe in Almighty God. The question of stealing and short-changing people in the name of religion should stop.”

But in a statement yesterday from his Presidential Hill Top Estate in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Obasanjo explained that because of the current peculiar situation of the country, it is pertinent that any leader or political party should run away from a Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian ticket in next year’s presidential election.

Obasanjo said: “Sensitivity is a necessary ingredient for enhancement of peace, security and stability at this point in the political discourse and arrangement for Nigeria and for encouraging confidence and trust.

“It will be insensitive to the point of absurdity for any leader or any political party to be toying with a Muslim-Muslim or Christian-Christian ticket at this juncture.

“Nigeria cannot, at this stage, raise the spectre and fear of Islamisation or Christianisation. The idea of proselytisation in any form is a grave danger that must not be contemplated by any serious-minded politician at this delicate situation in Nigeria. This time is different from any other time.

“Therefore, disregarding the fact that there are fears that need to be allayed at this point will amount not only to insensitivity of the

highest order but will also amount to bad politics indeed.”

Former Head of State and All Progressives Congress’ (APC) presidential aspirant, Maj.-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, was among the dignitaries that attended the funeral of the uncle to former Governor of Bayelsa State, Mr. Timipre Sylva.

The remains of the 87-year-old Pa Benson Adigio-Eseni was buried at his hometown in Okpoma, Brass Local Government Area, last Saturday.

Others, who attended were Sylva’s political associates and friends, including some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The solemn ceremony brought back memories of the sad circumstances that led to the death of the octogenarian, who died in his kidnappers’ den and was buried in a shallow grave at the entrance of Kula community, a border town between Rivers and Bayelsa State.

Buhari’ll salvage Nigeria, says campaign chief

The Kogi State Coordinator of the Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO), Chief James Ocholi (SAN), has said former Head of State, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, will salvage the country, if voted to power in next year’s presidential election.

Ocholi spoke yesterday in Lokoja, the state capital, at the inauguration of the campaign committee.

He noted that the country needed a positive change after 15 years of bad governance by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The frontline lawyer said the Presidency under Gen. Buhari would turn around the fortunes of the nation.

According to him, the All Progressives Congress (APC) is poised to dislodge the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from power and rescue Nigeria from stagnation, corruption, maladministration and insecurity.

Also, the Coordinator of the Southwest branch of the Buhari 2015 Support Group Centre, Mr Ayo Fatola, urged Nigerians to support Gen. Buhari’s aspiration to emerge President in 2015.

In a statement in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, Fatola said there were three core values that make Gen. Buhari to stand out as a presidential aspirant.

The coordinator said Nigerians cannot afford to throw away the chance to elect the former Head of State to develop the country.

He noted that Gen. Buhari stands on a high moral ground with an impeccable record in public service.

Fatola said the APC aspirant had always been committed to any task he handled, adding that his dedication to work showed his resolve to take Nigeria to greater heights.

The coordinator said Gen. Buhari’s simplicity, integrity and sincerity were necessary building blocks that he would use to nurture Nigeria into a modern nation Nigerians crave.

According to him, Nigerians should vote in 2015 to realise their dream of a better nation.

  • Buhari, the leader we need

    Buhari, the leader we need

SIR: Nigerians are eagerly awaiting the APC to elect its presidential candidate who will slug it out with the ruling party (PDP) in the general election next year. If I have to say the minds of Nigerians, we have seen the best of PDP, they have exhausted their ideas of governance and there is no a new thing people are expecting from them anymore.

A large percentage of Nigerians are clamouring for change of government. Nigerians are the second poorest people in the world. In reality, President Goodluck Jonathan has transformed Nigeria by exploiting ethnicity and religion to polarize the country. For the first time in the democratic history of Nigeria, aspirants are declaring and campaigning in the churches and mosques.

Nigerians at home and abroad are saying corruption and indiscipline are our major problems. Today, the fact remains that, the only man who can prove that he is bringing something different to the people in terms of change by action is General Muhammadu Buhari. He is the candidate whom Nigerians can trust to demonstrate the political will to fight corruption which everybody knows is our problem and recognizes as President Jonathan’s weakest point and of course, the bane of our development. Buhari has the antecedents, discipline and character to fight corruption. This is the minds of many Nigerians. And to quote one of the ex-staff of the PTF when Buhari was the chairman “he could have squandered the money meant for PTF’s projects because at that time nobody was auditing him on how he was spending the money because he was trusted.” This is to tell you how incorruptible the man is. The popularity of Buhari was put to test during his declaration last week. Those who attended his declaration rally on October 15, came from all over the country and they were not paid kobo to be there.

In essence, if APC is to achieve its aim of winning the power at the centre in 2015 general election, they need not look beyond Buhari. He is the greatest electoral asset the APC has for now. He can sincerely lead the party to victory. Nigerians are confident that there exists a good chance for APC to produce changes that are beneficial to all Nigerians.

  • Buhari steps out in grand style

Buhari steps out in grand style

On Wednesday, former Head of State Gen. Muhammadu Buhari joined the presidential race by declaring at the Eagle Square, Abuja. With his entrance, pundits say the battle for the Villa has just begun, writes TONY AKOWE, Abuja

Drumming. Singing. And dancing. It looked like a carnival. Politicians from various parts of the country were present. From several meters away, you could feel the celebration in the air. Motorists had a field day trying to negotiate their way around the Eagle Square, Abuja. The occasion was the official declaration of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari for the presidential race. He is seeking the Presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nigeria’s main opposition party.

Although it was meant to be a simple event, aspirants contesting various offices in their states turned the event into a campaign ground trying to outdo one another. Many of them came in open roofed cars, doing a parade round the Square with their supporters. Some others came quietly. In particular, governorship aspirants from Katsina State, the home state of Gen. Buhari stole the show.

For over two hours, security agents and organisers of the event had a hectic time trying controlling the surging crowd. The arrival of Gen. Buhari at about 12.27pm was greeted with wide celebration. The crowd rushed towards his convoy, waving frantically at his supporters who had taken over every available seat. Everybody wanted to touch the General and for about five minutes, his aides and organisers tried to get him into the state box.  That done, the stage was set for the event proper.

Former Bayelsa State Governor Chief Timipre Silva set the tone for the day when he said the retired General was not in the presidential race for himself, but for the Nigerian people. He paid tribute to him for agreeing to come out of retirement to serve his fatherland. He lamented the state of the economy, which, he said, was in dire need of revamping as well as the current state of security in the country. He stressed that the security of the nation needs resuscitation and decried that for six months and still counting, over 200 school girls had been missing.

He said: “Our economy is in a shamble. The Nigerian problem is well known to us. Today, we are presenting to Nigerians the solution to Nigeria’s problem and that solution is Gen. Buhari. He is not in the race because of himself. He is in the race because of us, the young people of Nigeria. Happily, he has decided to come out of retirement and help us stabilise the country so that we can carry on with the task of developing the nation. He brings experience, integrity and transparency to bear on the campaign. That is why we must join hands and support him. He is a man of the people today and will be President of the people come 2015.”

Senator Olurunibe Mamora, who spoke on behalf of APC elders, told the gathering that the nation cannot afford to go on with the high rate of unemployment, insecurity, youth restiveness and other social vices that have characterised the PDP government since 1999.

Mamora said: “There is a wind of change and it is blowing across the country. The time for change has come and nobody can stop it. In 2015, APC government will be installed.”

Former Benue State Governor and Senate Minority Leader George Akume spoke in the same vein, but said those claiming that Gen. Buhari was too old to aspire for the Presidency should know that age is never a barrier in leadership. He argued that the APC is richly endowed with numerous credible candidates. While saying that the APC has grown into a global brand, be asked politicians, especially aspirants within the party, to play the politics of ideas and not that of insulting people.

Former Chairman of the ruling PDP Chief Audu Ogbe described Gen.  Buhari as the nemesis of the corrupt. Ogbe said while supporters of the General believes he is the best man for the job, he stressed that they are opposed to imposition of candidate on the party. He welcomed the aspiration of other aspirants, saying: “We welcome the aspiration of Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Nda-Isaiah. We also welcome others who may want to join the race because we are a party built on solid democratic principles.”

He argued that Gen. Buhari’s credentials speak for themselves. He dismissed claims that Gen. Buhari is a religious fanatic, saying: “If Buhari is a fanatic, many of us will have nothing to do with him. I am a Christian, so is Rotimi Amaechi, so is Adams Oshiomhole, so is John Oyegun, so is Rochas Okorocha. Those who are calling him fanatic are not more Christian than we are. We don’t want to call the Pharisees, claiming holiness, claiming they are more Catholic than the Pope. Let me also tell you that the people propagating this are doing so because they want political parties to be drawn along religious lines”.

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi said the 14 governors in the APC were determined to work together to actualise change.

He told the gathering: “Governors have resolved that whoever emerges as the party candidate, all of us will work to deliver APC. You know that our dear GMB is one of the aspirants who want the ticket of the party and you know that he is a material they don’t have in the other party. If they say they have someone like him, they should show us somebody who is anti- corruption like Gen. Buhari. APC provides an alternative for the country. We have been tested and we have never disappointed Nigerians. For us as APC, we will line up behind the party. Go back home and get your voter’s card. We will punish these people with our votes; Rivers State is not in their hands. Lagos State is not in their hands; Kano State is not in their hands. They are banking on using security. We shall teach them the Osun example. We will fight with our body, with our lives because there must be change this time. We have said it again and again that there is no aspirant in APC that is not better than the aspirant in PDP.  What we must do is not only to vote for the aspirant we support, we must also get voters card so that when we finish nominating our own candidate here, we will line up behind that candidate to ensure that we vote out Jonathan. That is what we will do. One thing is that this party stands for anti- corruption because if we save the money they are stealing, there will be light. Mr President said to us on live television that he is the most abused president. He said by 2013, there will be so much light in Nigeria that Nigerians will be dancing on the street. Are we dancing?”

Addressing the gathering, Gen. Buhari said his mission in the race was to rescue the nation from the clutches of underdevelopment and misgovernment. According to him, Nigeria has continued to be on the decline in terms of development since 1999 when the PDP took over the rein of government.

He said: “Nigeria, in my experience, has never been so divided, so polarised by an unthinking government hell bent on ruling and stealing forever whatever befalls the country.

“APC will stop them in their tracks and rescue Nigeria from the stranglehold of the PDP. Since the last 16 years, PDP government has witnessed decline in all critical sectors of life in Nigeria. I humbly wish to present myself before you, before all of Nigeria and before God seeking to be elected as APC’s presidential candidate. Having appreciated that the only way to relieve Nigerians of the PDP, the main opposition parties decided to pool their strengths into one party. We have worked very hard in the last 18 months to put up structures from the polling units to wards, local governments, states and the centre”.

He said the leadership of the party has “tried to ensure all processes in our party formation to be transparent and credible. These structures will lead to free and fair polls. There is no point in holding elections if they are not free and fair. Interference in the form of rigging, which the PDP government has practised since 2003, is the worst form of injustice – denying people their right to express their opinions. Whether they like it or not, injustice cannot endure.”

While lamenting the insecurity in the land occasioned by Boko Haram, he decried the fact that “there is prevalence of armed robbery, kidnappings and killings, cattle rustling, market and farmland arson, which has taken a new and a frightening dimension, disrupting economic and social life across whole communities”.

He also expressed concern about the economy, which, he said, has continued to deteriorate while the government continues to announce fantastic growth figures.

He said when PDP came to power in 1999; Nigeria was generating about 4,000 M/W of electricity.

“After 15 years and $20 billion spent, we are generating between 3,000 – 4,000 M/W. No failure is more glaring than this. We in APC are resolved to bring change to Nigeria. We plan to do things differently.”

A Buhari-led government, he said, plans to put priority on protection of lives and properties; pursuing economic policies for shared prosperity and immediate attention on youth employment; quality education for development, modernity and social mobility; agricultural productivity for taking millions out of poverty and ensuring food security; reviving industry to generate employment and “make things” not just to remain hawkers of other peoples’ goods; developing solid minerals exploitation, which will substantially attract employment and revenue for government; restoring honour and integrity to public service by keeping the best and attracting the best; tackling corruption, which has become blatant and widespread.

He said the rest of the world looks at Nigeria as the home of corruption. Nigeria, he said, is a country where stealing is not corruption.

Human rights activist and a Senatorial aspirant from Kaduna State Mallam Shehu Sani told The Nation that even though all the aspirants on the platform of the party are credible, Gen. Buhari stands out among all of them. He described him as a man with grassroots support and acceptability. He argued that the advantage Gen. Buhari has over other aspirants is the fact that while others came from the PDP to join the APC, Buhari has never been a member of the ruling party.

Before his formal declaration, the General warned his supporters against casting aspersions on other aspirants of the party.

He said: “My supporters must not engage in any kind of behaviour or conduct that will tarnish the image of any leader or promote division and rancour within the ranks of the party. Whoever does that should know that he or she is working for the enemy. At the same time, I would like to appeal to you to be good ambassadors of the opposition. As a body, the opposition is committed to the rule of law and as members of the parties in the opposition, you must learn to do the same at all times. In particular, you must learn to be vigilant, especially just before, during and immediately after elections, whether these are rigged or not so that sponsored hoodlums are not made to commit illegalities that are, in the end blamed on you. With your support, I intend to offer myself for the position of the President of the republic on the platform of our great party. I intend to make a formal announcement soon and I hope I can count on up your continuing support and sacrifice. However, I would like to point out  that to be more meaningful, your support must extend beyond my person and always be available to the party and all those the party puts forward because it is the party that is the platform. You must at all times remember that the APC is a party with several qualified people for each and all the positions that will be contested, including that of the President. It is the primaries that will determine who eventually represents the party and in which capacity. If I get the party nomination, I expect you to redouble your effort and commitment until we clinch the presidency. But in the event that it happens to be one of the other aspirants who wins, I will expect you, as a good party man to extend to him your support. We are a united party and united we shall remain because our strength lies in our unity. For this and for other reasons, I must warn all my supporters, volunteers and other well wishers within the party and even out of it not to insult or be rude to any other aspirant or party leader on my behalf.”

The race has, indeed, begun and interesting times lie ahead.

Jonathan cautions Buhari on election campaign

…Conduct your campaign truthfully – President

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday advised former head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), to conduct his electioneering campaign with greater regard for the truth.

The Presidency response to Buhari’s comments about current administration’s performance came via a statement issued by the President’s media aide, Dr. Reuben Abati.

The former Nigerian leader had during Wednesday’s formal declaration of his 2015 presidential bid castigated the Peoples Democratic Party- led Federal Government for impoverishing Nigerians.

But the Presidency in the statement condemned what it described as “reckless, baseless and unsupportable” charges made against the administration by Buhari.

“We wholly reject the allegations made by Gen. Buhari against the Jonathan administration at yesterday’s declaration of his intention to contest the 2015 presidential elections as an irresponsible denigration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan’s sincere efforts, over the past four years, to positively transform Nigeria.

“It reflects very badly on the character of the political opposition we now have in Nigeria, that a political leader of Gen. Buhari’s stature will deliberately make such false and uncharitable comments about the elected leadership of his country, merely for personal and sectional political gain,” the statement said.

It added: “The falsity of Buhari’s anti-Jonathan and anti-PDP claims will be obvious to knowledgeable Nigerians and friends of the country, but for the benefit of others we will like to affirm that there is absolutely no truth whatsoever in his charge that the last 16 years of PDP Government has witnessed a decline in all critical sectors of life in Nigeria or that the economy continues to deteriorate.

“Statistics and rankings from the National Bureau of Statistics, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and other international economic agencies give the lie to Buhari’s claims on the state of the Nigerian economy.”

The Presidency claimed that available figures, statistics and ratings show that the Nigerian economy has consistently maintained an unprecedented growth rate of 6-7 per cent under the current administration.

“They also show that the Nigerian economy is now the leading economy in Africa and the 26th largest in the world with a gross domestic product of over $500 billion per annum,” it stated.

The statement also faulted Buhari’s assertion on agriculture, insisting that Nigeria’s agricultural sector is thriving under the reforms being implemented by Jonathan’s administration.

“The rest of the world look at Nigeria as a home of corruption, where stealing is not regarded as corruption.”
