    Buhari declares presidential bid Wednesday

Former head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), would formerly declare his intension to contest the 2015 presidential election on Wednesday.

He will bid to win the All Progressives Congress ticket in the party’s primaries slated for December.

Buhari confirmed this in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, when he addressed party members who thronged the state House to welcome him to the state.

He was in the state to meet governor Chibuike  Amaechi  and party leaders as part of his ongoing consultation on the APC primaries.

He said, “I was in Imo State last Saturday, then Lagos, Abeokuta, Ibadan, Ogbomosho and Ilorin before going back to Abuja and now in Rivers State.

“We are about to go for the primary elections, where all those who are interested in the elective offices from councilor to the Presidency will submit themselves during the primaries. I happen to be one of those seeking the ticket of our great party.

“I intend to make that declaration on Wednesday in Abuja, God willing. That is why I have been going around to see the governors and the leaders of our great party across the country to ask for their understanding and support.”

Buhari commended Amaechi’s leadership style, saying his massive transformation projects had changed the state’s landscape.

Bauchi group to buy nomination form for Buhari

The Bauchi State Chapter of Buhari Campaign Organization on Tuesday realised over N6 million on the spot at a sensitization rally to purchase an All Progressive Congress presidential form  for former head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd).

The Bauchi State Coordinator of The Nigerian Solution Network Group, Dr. Danjuma Dabo, told the over 10,000 audience at the solidarity rally in support of Buhari  that the organization would source for fund to buy nomination form and foot campaign bills for the ex-Nigerian leader.

Describing Buhari as honest, committed and patriotic Nigeria, Dabo charged the APC supporters to contribute money for his campaign activities.

Speaking at the rally, Capt. Bala Jibrin (rtd), who was a Guest Speaker, condemned insinuations that Buhari is tribalistic and religiously biased.

Jibrin said Buhari is a “a statesman who refused to associate with those playing tribal or religious politics and has never been involved in the looting of the nation’s treasury even when he had every opportunity to do so.”

  • Bad leadership responsible for Nigeria’s problems – Buhari

Bad leadership responsible for Nigeria’s problems – Buhari

Former head of state, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), on Monday said bad leadership is responsible for the numerous problems plaguing the country.

He said his penchant to govern Nigeria is borne out of his desire for a secured and efficiently managed country.

The former Nigerian leader spoke in Ilorin, Kwara State capital, during his meeting with Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed.

Buhari said, “I had contested the presidential election three times and I lost three times and I ended up in Supreme Court three times. We thank God because the Constitution does not limit how many times you can contest. Once you are 18 and above, you are fit to apply for the country presidency. They did not put age limit to it.

“I had ruled this country before in a different system. From 1999 till now, am sure you know what has been happening.

“I believe what Nigeria needs now is to be secured and efficiently managed. This is the APC’s stand. And I will like to use this opportunity through my party and through the system to ensure a secured and efficiently managed Nigeria. Presently, the country is not being well managed.”

On the All Progressives Congress primaries, he stated, “That is up to the party and the people to choose the candidate to represent it at the presidential election. We want a level playing ground for everybody. Let Nigerians believe that they do matter, that all the efforts to salvage the country are for them. But if there is a consensus agreement, it is not forced on the people, all well and good.”

Meanwhile, Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, on Sunday predicted that two G7 governors still in the Peoples Democratic Party would soon decamp to the APC.

The governor stated this during his visit to the state as part of his consultation towards the forthcoming APC national congress where the party’s presidential flag bearer is expected to emerge.

Buhari, Kwankwaso begin battle for APC presidential ticket

The bid for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket got on the fast lane at weekend, with Senator Bukola Saraki pulling out of the race.

The former Kwara State Governor said he would back a candidate that is acceptable to all party members. “I don’t think our party can afford too much internal racour going into the election,” the former Kwara State Governor said.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced his interest in the race.  Gen. Muhammadu Buhari is set to join the race on Wednesday at the Eagle Square in Abuja.

Gen. Buhari was at the Lagos State House in Marina to seek Governor Babatunde Fashola’s support for his ambition.

He was accompanied by ex-Bayelsa State Governor Timipre Sylva, ex-Minister Nasir El-Rufai and former Speaker Bello Masari.

The attempt to get Kano State Governor  Rabiu Kwankwaso to step down for Gen. Buhari has failed.

Supporters of the governor said he will announce his candidacy on October 28.

Stakeholders tried to prevail on the governor to step down since both of them are from the Northwest zone, which has the highest voter population.

According to the APC nomination of candidates time table, presidential aspirants are expected  to have obtained an expression of interest forms by October 19.

The sale of the forms will open from next Monday till November 6. The aspirants will be screened between November 10 and 12. The candidate will be elected at its national convention on December 2.

President Goodluck Jonathan has already been endorsed as the consensus candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), although some members of the party are silently grumbling about the close of space for others.

Gen. Buhari’s supporters said at the weekend that the former leader remained the only Nigerian politician who has the courage and capacity to fight corruption.

National Secretary of the Buhari Support Group Ibrahim Daud said the Buhari Support Group, an umbrella body of about 49 voluntary youth organisations, have mobilised five million Nigerians to attend Gen. Buhari declaration of interest on Wednesday.

According to him, Buhari is the only candidate who can defeat the PDP and stop corruption. “That is why the corrupt cabal that has held sway since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999 is bent on ensuring that Buhari does not emerge president.

“They are only trying to protect their ill-gotten wealth to the detriment of the majority of Nigerians.  Hence they cook up all kinds of mendacities and campaigns of calumny to discredit Gen. Buhari and lower his estimation in the eyes of right-thinking members of the society.

“At first, the antagonists of Nigeria’s national development concocted and fed Nigerians with the lie that Gen. Buhari was a religious bigot, who would convert Nigeria to an Islamic state if elected president.

“Those that know the General intimately know that though he is a dedicated Muslim, he has no trace of religious or even ethnic bigotry. Gen. Buhari is one of the most munificent politicians of our time!

“Now that the gambit of religion cannot work anymore, they are trying to use age as a criterion to discredit him. But it has come to public knowledge that all these tales being fabricated by his political opponents are only strategies employed to maintain their stranglehold on the people.

“The 2015 presidential election shall be a political turning point for Nigeria, as the citizenry have become increasingly aware of the antics of the corrupt ruling class and other detractors and saboteurs of the nation.

“This time, the gambit of religion, age or any other primordial sentiment will not deter the people from voting for Buhari in 2015. Even though we agree with the idea of generational change in leadership, we believe that only a mature politician like Buhari will be able to wrest power from the PDP, before sanitising the polity.

“Gen. Buhari is the only presidential aspirant that can make a full declaration of his assets before taking office. He will also declare his assets upon leaving office, to enable the people to make candid evaluations of his stewardship.

“We should bear in mind that massive unemployment, terrorism/insurgency, disease prevalence are all linked vicariously to high-profile corruption and impunity by the ruling class.

“For Nigeria to make meaningful and steady progress, a mechanism must be put in place to tackle corruption and indiscipline, and this mechanism can only be driven by an incorruptible leader like Gen. Buhari.

“This is because we have watched corruption in public places escalate steadily over the last 16 years that the PDP has been in power. We must effect the necessary leadership change now, to move Nigeria and indeed Nigerians out of the doldrums.

“We can say affirmatively that the epoch-making declaration of General Buhari will witness the unprecedented attendance of not less than five (5) million passionate supporters of the General.”

One of Kwankwaso’s Campaign Coordinators, Chief Olisaemeka Akamukali, said Kwakwanso planned to declare his presidential ambition on October 23.

He said after a nationwide consultation with party leaders and other political stakeholders regarding the presidential election, the governor had decided to throw his hat in the ring.

He hinted that the governor slowed down his campaign due to pressure to yield ground to Gen. Buhari, stressing that rather than ask the governor to step down, it is the former Head of State who should make way for a younger candidate – in line with the need for generational shift.

He said: “In as much as we agree that Buhari is a man of integrity but you will also agree with me that age is not on his side. He is 73, going to 74 years and Ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar is close to 70 years old. But Kwakwanso will be 58 by October 21.”

He explained that it was wrong for anybody to regard the governor as a “dark horse” in the contest, adding that Kwakwanso had long years of experience in politics, beginning from 1991 when he emerged as the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

He said: “Kwakwanso has long years of experience in politics. He has been a parliamentarian, a governor and two-time minister. When he contested the governorship election in Kano state and lost, he congratulated the winner and waited for eight years before staging a come-back.

“The governor is a grassroots politician and one who tries to carry his followers along in his undertakings

“Remember he was once a member of the Group of seven governors who protested the goings-on in his former party. I will not be surprised if many of them still in the PDP will want to support his aspiration to become president.”

Akamukali added: “The issue of anointing candidates for elections has been rejected by the APC and that is why the party is insisting that there shall be transparent primaries. The fears of some of the aspirants may be due to the fact of their previous experience where they never face competitive primaries to emerge as party candidate.

“That is why such people are pushing for consensus. The generality of the party is saying ‘no, let us do things differently from what the PDP are doing’. We must have a transparent primary.

He maintained that the national leader of the party, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, party’s national Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun and Atiku were together in the SDP with the Kano State governor adding that Kwakwanso is still retaining the affinity he had with the political network.

  • Group for Buhari’s victory

    Group for Buhari’s victory

A group, Buhari Support Group Centre (BSGC), has promised to work for the victory of Gen. Muhammadu Buhari in next year’s presidential election.

The group, which promoted the ideals, goals and objectives of the former head of State, said it would use whatever is legally necessary to ensure Buhari’s victory at the polls.

A statement by the group’s Southwest Coordinator, Ayo Fatola, said its National leader and a former minister, Alhaji Umaru Dembo, promised stakeholders that with the support of the North and South coordinators, Dr Nasiru Ladan Argungun and Pastor Ezekiel Longe, BSGC would mobilise sufficient people and resources for Buhari’s success at the primaries and the 2015 election.

The group named its Southwest coordinators as: Comrade Babatope Omobulajo (Ekiti); Mike A. Adeyanju (Ondo); Alhaji Isiaka Isamotu (Osun); Deacon Isaiah A. Oyemakinde (Oyo); Chief Derin Adebiyi (Ogun) Chief Ajibade Emiabata Balogun (Lagos).

  • APC: Give us Buhari

SIR: “The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” – Martin Luther King Jnr.

As the 2015 Presidential Election is gathering momentum, the core PDP supporters are at the moment, rooting for the candidature of General Muhammadu  Buhari, stating confidently that the pride of Duara is the easiest for Jonathan to maul if presented by the APC.

It’s all lie! It’s a strategy to confuse the APC. If the APC want to have a good show in 2015, I am of the opinion that only Buhari has the character and pedigree to deliver. Take for instance, the total votes that will come from the whole of South-south and South-eastern Nigeria for Jonathan cannot be more than what Buhari will garner from Kano, Jigawa and Sokoto States respectively.

I give Imo to Jonathan, but with Okorocha, it won’t be a landslide like 2011 for the PDP.  Same in Rivers and Edo. Jonathan will win but won’t be as much as 2011 figure.

Buhari’s age? Of course, Buhari is aged! However, it is necessary to remind Nigerians that the hero of virtually all African democrats, Nelson Mandela was older than Buhari when he successfully governed South Africa.

It is also germane to expressly state that Jerry Rawlings was Buhari’s age-mate when he meritoriously served the people of Ghana.

Lastly, without being sensational, today, I can confidently avow that the only political leader that can stand on the streets of Kano, Dutse, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi, Gombe, Yola, Maiduguri, Sokoto, Damaturu, Zamfara, Lafia, Minna and within a twinkle of an eye, more than two million electorates will surround him is Mohammadu Buhari! Yes, he is!

In 2015, the alternative to Buhari is the continuity of President Goodluck Jonathan. Aside Buhari, none of those interested in Jonathan’s job at the moment fare better than Jonathan.

    In GMB I trust!

  • ‘Adopt Buhari as APC’s consensus candidate’

‘Adopt Buhari as APC’s consensus candidate’

Supporters of former Head of State and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain General Muhammadu Buhari are pushing for his adoption as the party’s consensus presidential candidate.

They are putting pressure on the APC leadership to drop its plan of a Modified Direct primary adopted by the National Executive Council, saying the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would infiltrate the primary.

One of the general’s support groups, the Buhari Vanguard, in a statement, said having a consensus candidate would save cost and prevent rancour.

Chairman of the group Jasper Azuatalam, who signed the statement, said the group considered all relevant laws, including the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution, as they relate to the emergence of a presidential candidate and concluded that consensus was the most viable, cost-effective and unifying option for the party.

The statement reads: “As an opposition party that has promised to reduce corruption in Nigeria, it will be in good faith to avoid an indirect primary election, which will cost so much money and lead to financial inducement by some who still believe in money politics against credibility and popularity.

“In the same manner, an indirect primary will give the ruling party an opportunity to infiltrate the APC by influencing delegates with money and planting moles within the delegates to influence who emerges as the presidential candidate. This is because they know the candidate to beat in the APC and the PDP will do all in its power to make sure that such candidate does not emerge as the APC’s presidential standard bearer.

“We also believe that the bitterness, rancour and disaffection that may arise from the contest will weaken the APC and give the PDP undue advantage ahead of the 2015 presidential election. It is clear from all available statistics and parameters that the PDP has no locus standi in the 2015 presidential election, as it will lose woefully in a free and fair contest because of its abysmal performance in government, which has earned them the wrath of Nigerians.

“A consensual arrangement, as stipulated in Article 20 of the APC’s Constitution and Section 87 (6) of the Electoral Act, is surely the best option available for the APC. This will save the APC the unnecessary litigations, rancour and strife that accompany presidential primaries. If the PDP, with all the resources available to it and the power of incumbency, is working towards a consensual arrangement by adopting Goodluck Jonathan, it will be unwise for an opposition party to want to sell the dangerous region.”

  • Buhari, Atiku and Kwankwaso: How APC can win

Buhari, Atiku and Kwankwaso: How APC can win

OPPOSITION POWER President Goodluck Jonathan is beatable in 2015; let us start from that premise. But it’s so very disheartening that the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) displays a bit of dithering and unsure-footedness at this early stage of  its existence and prior to a major election. While one may want to blame it all on teething stage syndrome, the unpalatable truth may well be a lack of institutional capacity, the same disease that has plagued the ruling party from the outset. There may also be the question of shortsightedness and a lack of fidelity to the party.

In the case of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former President Olusegun Obasanjo ingested the original copy and remade it in his own excrement. So what we have today is a smelly, malleable and irredeemable lump. PDP is an amoeba that lacks both body and soul. It is a house that seems bound to implode unless a true leader comes along soon and completely remakes it from foundation.

It is sad to note that APC seems to suffer from the same PDP ailment. Why, for instance, would anyone in the APC be raising the question of adopting a consensus candidate now? That argument ought to have been rested over a year ago if not from the outset. This suggests that like PDP, there are no ground norms in APC too. We speak of basic, immutable rules that ought to have been established from the beginning and taken for granted now.

EAT THAT FROG: Let’s not despair for it is still early in the day, but APC must eat its frog and rework some assumptions. First, it has done increditably well in mid-wiving a large, alternative party. It may not know it but this is no mean task; it is indeed a historic achievement and the task now is to nurture and sustain it into an institution. I wrote here not quite long ago that Bola Tinubu and Muhammadu Buhari were our greatest democrats today and not a few readers wrote in to say “Expresso e be like say you don colo” (are you going out of your mind?) And I simply told them to try establishing a large opposition party from the scratch.

Second, nation-building is not a short dash, it is a historical journey. APC minders must always remember that they are building an institution that will not only stand the test of time but will last forever. For instance, if PDP is the Republican Party, they must aim at founding an equivalent of the Democratic Party. In other words, they are the frontiersmen in a great historical epoch that will define Nigeria’s future.

Having noted these points and in order to achieve this glorious destiny, APC must always, dutifully identify all those viruses that plague the PDP and be rid of them with clinical dexterity. And this brings us to the juncture we are now: the CPC candidate in the 2015 presidential election. We expect nothing less than the great democratic tradition of a primary election to prevail in the selection of her candidates. Let this process be adopted from the outset and for always. This is internal democracy, the hallmark of participatory governance; the antidote to one-man domination.

Having said that, let all aspirants throw their hats in the primary election ring. Yes we are not entirely naïve about the role of money and personality cult in the primary poll but whoever heard of a totally flawless election. Transparency of the process is what is important for now.

THE BEST ASPIRANT IS: Four persons have so far shown interest in the CPC’s presidential ticket viz: Isaiah Ndah; Abubakar Atiku; Muhammadu Buhari and Rabiu Kwankwaso. This is in the order they had indicated their interest in the race. Though amiable Ndah, the successful publisher of Leadership  joined the fray much early on, he is far out of his league here and would have to await another opportunity or try a lower position. He is not in contest here.

Atiku: Turakin Adamawa’s last chance? There will be ample time for this column to take a critical look at the aspirants before the December 2 primary date, but it seems this may well be Atiku’s last shot at the top job of the land. Having tried in 2003 (yes!), 2007 and 2011 without success, age, ennui and geo-political factors may work against him in 2019; but who can foretell tomorrow?

Let it be noted, however, that different dynamics govern party primaries and general elections so we are considering here the capacity to cross the first hurdle, the party primary. He has gone through this grueling, if not punishing and exorbitant road many times before; but he has deep pockets so he is likely to sweep the APC primary, especially if it is a closed delegates’ election. But if party delegates are looking beyond the primary and if they care about victory at the general election, then it will not be such an easy ride for Atiku.

Is Buhari still a force? Yes, he still is; a strong moral, religious and geopolitical force – Mai Gaskiyya he is fondly called by die-hard followers. But primary election in Nigeria is money election and you are lonely and indeed alone if you have no money. One wagers that it will be nigh impossible for a Buhari to win an Atiku in a closed primary election in Nigeria. Not oblivious of this fact, Buhari had let out what seemed like a yelp last Tuesday when he noted that he is the poorest presidential aspirant in the line-up. Well politics is a vicious game, isn’t it? And people are saying the forces against Buhari are still alive and well; why won’t he adopt/anoint a candidate from his camp? Debate for another day.

Would Kwankwaso pose a counterpoise to Atiku? There is a good chance that the challenge of the Kano State governor would be formidable. His ‘movement’, Kwankwasiyya, has taken over the politically influential state and is spreading. Kwankwaso can play the ‘fresh’ card; he can raise the cash and he has impressive work in Kano to show off. Carefully chaperoned, he could change the game both at the primary and even presidential election.

Jonathan is beatable? Yes indeed he is; and any of these three candidates could pull a surprise if APC gets its strategies right. Though it has been lax in mobilising the Southeast and Southsouth, it is never late to push in that direction and there is so much difference six months can make.

APC can indeed win, but the bigger victory lies in sustaining a virile alternative party and to understand that if it keeps at it, surely it will get the top job one day but it may also take a bit of time.

     Forbes’ certificate of infamy

Now we know Forbes for what it truly is: an American public relations jobber adept at propping up unscrupulous Third World public official. Sometime ago, it was Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, Nigeria’s minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, who got awarded some worthless piece of paper called leadership certificate, which he dared not present in Nigeria.

Last week in New York, Forbes made another ‘killing’ when it handed Petroleum Minister Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke what it calls Forbes Best of Africa Award in Leadership. It is common knowledge that Diezani has grossly under-performed as a minister, having superintended over a chaotic oil sector riddled with malfeasance in the last three years. No new facilities, inability to fix old ones, IOCs divesting with urgency, unprecedented high sea oil theft and a regime of sleaze and phantom subsidy that has left Nigeria’s economy prostrate. That is her legacy.

You would think only African concerns are involved in award scams but here is a clear case of criminal collusion with politically exposed persons by a US firm. Forbes must spare us the psychological trauma of beatifying our worst public officials who seek validation from foreign lands. Forbes hurts itself too mortally when it dishes out dubious awards.

  • Buhari: Nigerians ’ll vote PDP out

Buhari: Nigerians ’ll vote PDP out

For the second time in two days, former Head of State Gen. Muhammadu Buhari yesterday slammed what he termed the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) misrule and assured all that Nigerians will next year vote out the ruling party.

Gen. Buhari, who on Tuesday in Abuja announced that he would seek the ticket of his All Progressives Congress (APC) party to contest for president, said in Ado-Ekiti that Nigerians were tired of the PDP and will next year end its misrule.

He was at the Ekiti State capital to inaugurate the Ekiti Parapo Square, a 12,000-seater capacity pavilion built by the outgoing Governor Kayode Fayemi administration.

The ceremony signals the begining of the winding down of the Fayemi administration as Governor-elect Ayo Fayose will take the saddle on October 16.

Apart from being the nation’s Independence anniversary, yesterday was also the 18th anniversary of the creation of  Ekiti State. Twenty six distinguished indigenes were given State Merit Awards.

Gen Buhari urged the electorate to apply their voter cards purposely to vote in a new regime of hope and progress.

At the event were Deputy Governor Prof. Modupe Adelabu; former Governor Segun Oni; Speaker Adewale Omirin, Senator Sola Adeyeye and State Chairman of the party Jide Awe.

There were also lawmakers, members of the Executive Council; representatives of the army, the police, prisons, immigration, and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Gen. Buhari said only the resolve of the electorate could end what he called PDP’s misrule.

He said: “It is no doubt that Nigerians have been traumatised under the PDP leadership and Nigeria will be in trouble if we carry on the way the PDP has been doing in Nigeria.

“That is why it is important for the elite to talk to the less-privileged to collect their permanent voter cards in preparation for the 2015 elections. This is the only missile against the PDP tyranny.

“We must take this seriously because the APC is seriously determined to offer a better alternative platform for Nigerians. So, we have to be prepared for next year’s elections.”

Gen. Buhari praised Fayemi for his success in the last four years, which he noted reflected in the quality and grade of the pavilion.

“I am indeed very happy to be part of this success story. Fayemi has been able to prove that what is expected of any leader is selfless service and I want to believe that all these legacy projects will remain in his name forever”, Gen. Buhari said.

The governor urged the citizens to unite and take ownership of the “Ekiti project” so that the state could continue to have a “pool of achievers worthy of state, national and global recognition”.

“I therefore charge the good people of Ekiti State to push the bounds of possibilities for our future by uniting more than ever before to protect our heritage of honour as well as the modest developmental gains we have made in recent years. We must celebrate today by joining our hearts and minds in one accord, and decide to outgrow the teething challenges of statehood, such as the arbitrariness we have witnessed in recent times,” Fayemi said.

He described the State Merit Award as aimed at restoring the values for which Ekiti people are known, to redeem “the meaning of who our heroes are”.

Fayemi said it was  incontrovertible that Ekiti is the home of intellectuals, noting that one of the award recipients, Dr. Hallowed Olaoluwa’s feat as Africa’s youngest Ph.D holder in Mathematics at the age of 24, would spur the younger generation to undertake the intellectual challenge with “avowed determination to surpass the academic excellence already displayed by Olaoluwa”.

Fayemi added: “Today, we celebrate the 54th anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence, as well as the 18th anniversary of the creation of the land of honour, Ekiti State. We have therefore also found today a most suitable day for us to hold this year’s edition of the Ekiti State Merit Awards and Honours Roll as well as the official commissioning of this edifice – the Ekiti Parapo Square – one of the legacy projects of this administration and our foremost symbol of the heterogeneity and unity of the Ekiti people.

“The activities are all part of our end-of-tenure programme of events which we have put in place to celebrate our administration’s Legacy of Honour and Service – Aseyori Ifarasin Pelu Iyi.

“Today, our state comes of age. It has been 18 long years since our state was birthed on this day in 1996. We have gone through an interesting past, with more than our fair share of unsavoury episodes that have put us in bad light in the comity of states. But we have also made considerable progress as a people. Certainly, we have fared better as an autonomous state than when we were just a part of the old Ondo State.”
