First Bank BC shifts camp to Akure

Zenith Bank Women Basketball  League champions, First Bank BC arrived in Akure, Ondo State, yesterday to continue preparation for the opening phase of the league, which begins on March 30 in Abuja.

Assistant coach of the team, Taiye Adeniyi, who disclosed this to SportingLife yesterday, stated that 20 players would continue preparation for the league at the sports hall of the Akure Stadium. According to her, the move is to ensure that the players are not distracted and boost the team’s chances of retaining the title it reclaimed last season.

Adeniyi stated that the players were in top shape and would continue the good work they started in Lagos in the build up to the new season. “The essence of shifting camp to Akure is to ensure that the team is not distracted. We have a bunch of players who are willing to do well this season and the technical crew headed by Coach Adewunmi Aderemi is committed to impart the latest basketball skill on the players.”

The team started preparation last month and Adeniyi stated that the training in Akure would be a continuation of what the players started in Lagos. “The players will be taken through the basics of the game because without it they cannot do well in the league. And I am sure the head coach is ready to show the players the way forward.”

Aderemi also said that the team would have about 10 new players to fill up the positions vacated by players who left the team for greener pastures after the FIBA African Club Championship for Women in Sfax, Tunisia, last year.

Aderemi stated that the recruitment became necessary to enable the Elephant Girls, as the team is fondly called, become strong again and have the capacity to retain the title it reclaimed last year after missing out for four years.

“What we intend to do is to get players that fit into our team and also share our aspiration of maintaining our stronghold on the league. We are not just looking for players, but quality players that can make our team better. We have lost players to foreign clubs, so we need to bolster our team, “ Aderemi added.

Having finished fourth at the FIBA Africa Championship, Aderemi noted that the target this year is to win the title despite the strong presence of Angolan teams – Inter club and Primero D’Agosto.  “It is definitely a big task, but my target this year is to win the African Championship. The team has achieved the feat twice and I hope it can repeat it this year.”

He said the team’s parent company, First Bank Nigeria PLC have been very supportive and said such is also needed to enable the team realise its ambition this year.

  • No Gambia camp for Flying Eagles

No Gambia camp for Flying Eagles

The proposed camping of  the Flying Eagles in The Gambia has been shelved, and the team will now travel directly from Nigeria to Senegal for the Africa Youth Championship (AYC), SL10.ng has learnt.

The Nigerian U-20s were initially expected to camp in The Gambia for a few days and travel to Senegal from there, but SL10.ng now understands that that will no longer be the case and the team will now depart Nigeria for Dakar this week.

Coach Manu Garba had last Thursday announced his final list of 21 players for the tournament, which expectedly excluded the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho, Musa Yahaya and Wilfried Ndidi due to injuries and club commitments.

The team is presently camped in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, and is expected to travel to Dakar via Lagos.

They have been involved in a series of friendly games, including the Super 6 tournament in Abuja, and two international friendly matches against the Black Satellites of Ghana, and they have also played some local teams.

Nigeria remains the most successful country in the history of the Africa Youth Championship, having won the competition a record six times, the last triumph coming four years ago in South Africa when John Obuh led the team to beat Cameroon 3-2 in the final. This year’s edition will see Nigeria in group A, along with hosts Senegal, Congo and Cote d’ Ivoire.

  • Registration for Greensprings/ Kanu Football Camp begins

Registration for the season four of the annual Greensprings/Kanu Football Camp has commenced across the country.

According to the organisers, students who will like to be part of the one-week camping can  now register online on www.greenspringskanufootballcamp.org.

The Director of Education, Greensprings School, Harry McFaul, said this year’s camp would be unique as over 500 participants and 80 coaches are expected to be part of the one-week exercise holding at the Lekki Campus of Greensprings.

“What makes this year’s event unique is that there will be more time allocated to coaching and training of coaches so that even more people will ultimately benefit from the camp in the longer term. The camp will be larger offering more opportunities to potential football stars from across Nigeria. We have had enquiries from farther afield than ever before with large numbers of sponsored places offered to boys and girls who have potential – but maybe not the financial means to attend. In furtherance of Greensprings’ corporate social responsibility, there will be an outreach programme in Abesan Community, Lagos where Kanu Nwankwo will lead all the foreign coaches and their Nigerian counterparts in a one-day football clinic for residents in the area,” McFaul said.

He added that the coaches would be drawn from England and Netherlands including Nigerian coaches.

“There will  be specialist coaches from the UK, Holland and Nigeria. These coaches are trained in coaching young players to bring out the best in them, using methods that can be adapted and used long after they have gone back to Europe,” he added.

Being the 30th anniversary of the school, McFaul promises that it would be an exciting moment for the participants.

His words: “The camp has grown in popularity and success over the years and many students have blossomed as a result of being at the camp. In recent years a number of players were spotted and offered scholarships at Greensprings where they have been highly successful academically as well as on the football pitch. Some have been fortunate enough to gain places at football academies in England after attending the camp. There is a lot of excitement and anticipation surrounding the camp this year and we pray for a great time of fun and fulfilment for all who attend.”

  • Our camp experience, by Corps members

Our camp experience, by Corps members

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members, who participated in the orientation for the first stream of Batch “C”, have been reliving their experiences. Some say it was good; others claim it was not so good, write OLUWAFEMI OGUNJOBI (NYSC, Makurdi) and PHILIP OKORODUDU (NYSC, Jalingo).

THE  orientation for the first set of Batch ‘C’ National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members ended last Monday, setting the stage for another set of graduates to undergo the training. But for those, who participated in the scheme, the journey started on a mixed note of excitement and disappointment.

Some of them travelled for more than 15 hours to get to their states of deployment. But for others, it was a short journey.

Samuel Osho, who was posted to Taraba State, spent 23 hours on the road before he got to the camp. The bus he was travelling in had an overnight stopover in Benue State before continuing the journey the following day. Samuel said: “It was the longest journey I have ever made.”

When the Corps members got to their camps, they were welcomed by NYSC officials and military personnel, who searched their luggage to ensure no harmful object was brought in. This exercise lasted several hours, because of the number of those involved.

Although registration was orderly in some camps, it was so in others, as the youth were stranded for several hours. After they were given uniforms and kits, the course commenced. The Corps members were drilled.

Unlike campus hostels, where students do not have bed time, every Corps member is expected to sleep after 10pm and wake up at 4am when they hear the sound from the military bingle. They were expected to prepare for the morning parade and exercises. Anyone found on the bed during the parade was punished. Life there was not the same with campus life, which gives students freedom to either participate or absent from academics.

“I heard so many unpalatable stories, especially how soldiers could punish all Corps members for an offence committed by one person. Indeed, I experienced this. We were punished in the daylight and midnight when our hostel was messes up. There were Corps members whose clothes were soaked with water for missing morning parades. Now, I know some of the stories I heard about camp life are true,” Esther Arowosafe, a graduate of OAU, said.

The Wannune Camp in Benue State was a beehive during the orientation session. The villagers made brisk business, rendering various services to the Corps members. Everything the Corps members needed was readily available at the door steps.

But, while some of the Corps members have good tales to tell about their experience, others have sour experiences.

Tunde Sanni, a Corps member in Taraba State, was rushed from the parade ground to the camp clinic after he collapsed during a physical exercise. Reliving the experience, Tunde said: “Prior to my admission at the camp clinic, I heard unpleasant stories about the condition of medical services in the campus and they were not exaggerated.

The camp clinic lacked adequate medical personnel to take care of Corps members, who fell sick during the orientation training.

“Most of the medical staff in the clinic were Corps members. When it comes to diagnosing patients, the clinic does not have facilities to do so. The most disheartening is non-availability of drugs. The situation was so serious that people were told to come back for their drugs. Despite, these shortcomings, the authorities were able to maintain a clean and safe environment.”

At the temporary camp in Government College, Jalingo, the hopes of many Corps members were dashed after they discovered the camp lack basic amenities, such as good toilet, electricity and bathroom.

For Dhikrullah Akinola, it was a memorable experience at the Plateau State NYSC camp. He said: “My stay in Mangu camp was wonderful. Initially, the harsh weather condition almost discouraged me but it was fun after all.”

Joy Idoko, a graduate of Business Administration at the Benue State University, said she had fond memories of the orientation training. She said: “Despite that our bed time was altered, I still enjoyed my stay in the camp. It attended some educative programme and acquire skill, which can make me to be self-reliant.”

Johnson Imaga, who is serving in Bayelsa State, said he would not forget his experience at Kaiama Orientation Camp in a hurry. Johnson said his hostel was notorious for unruly behaviours. He said: “We were subjected to harsh punishment and paid dearly for our stubbornness.”

  • El-Kanemi camp secure, says Bala

    El-Kanemi camp secure, says Bala

The Director of Media a t El-Kanemi Warriors Football Club of Maiduguri, Tahiru Bala has debunked a media report that key players of the club are planning to quit over incessant security challenges and poor welfare.

Bala said the management is doing everything humanly possible to give players the best in terms of security and welfare.

“It is rather unfortunate that one or two bad eggs in our team is mudslinging the good name of the club by saying what is not happening in Maiduguri. El-Kanemi is one team in Nigeria that pays salaries promptly that is why I get my salary as a civil servant on the 23rd of every month. Players of El-Kanemi Warriors also get their salaries. Our players are not leaving us as speculated and they are not in fear or like prisoners as wrongly reported,” Bala begins.

“Our camp is one of the best in the country and is located at the G.R.A. (Government Reserved Area) which is fenced and secured with security men around. Above all there was no attack on Maiduguri City not to talk of (sic) our camp that is in a secured and reserved area.

“The insurgency is in the southern part of the state that is where attacks occurred not in Maiduguri were our camp is located. Our youth vigilance group aka Civilian JTF have successfully forced all of them out of Maiduguri and since then the city became a no-go area to Boko Haram and life is going on normal in Maiduguri.

“So, I wonder which attack he (the reporter of the story) is saying. If a player is leaving us, he should leave but not spoil the good name made by great players like Samson Siasia, Rowland Ewere, Manu Garba and a lot of others in those days. Those players in question should please quietly leave than giving the club a bad name; soldier go soldier come barrack still remains. We want to use this medium to inform the media to always crosscheck their facts and balance their stories,” the director concluded.
