    • As Nigeria beats FIFA deadline

There was joy in the camp  of the Falconets when news  broke in that a court order restraining the Aminu Maigari led executive board from running Nigeria Football by justice J.P. Lot of Jos high court has been jettisoned.

The team is expected to participate in the FIFA U-20 female World Cup from August 5th but an impending court case meant that the country risked participating except the case was withdrawn of which the country risked been banned.

But when news filtered into the camp, that the case has been withdrawn, the team officials and players could not hide their joy.

There had been tension in the camp as the FIFA deadline of 17th July drew closer.

Some of the players who spoke with the team media officer Elizabeth Carr among them were Okaeme patience, Nnodim Sarah, Oshoala Asisat and Adeboyejo Yetunde said their dreams of participating in the 2014 FIFA U -20 Women’s World Cup is now a reality.

“Let me state the fact that we have been very worried, thinking our training will be in vain following the earlier suspension of the country by the world football governing body FIFA. This news has given us hope, our doubts have be settled. Our prayers have been answered. We are happy right now we can not wait to intensify our training.

“We have never stopped believing that we can win the World Cup but with the looming FIFA ban we thought that we would never achieve that ambition but now we give God the glory and state here that we will still win the Cup,” they stated.

They further commended the Federal government, Nigeria Football Federation and all stakeholders for the joint effort in resolving these issues.

“We want to promise Nigerians that our going to Canada is not only to participate, but to bring the Cup home. We are happy because even with the uncertainty our coaches still continued with our routine training. So we are prepared to storm the world,” the players added.

An elated Peter Dedevbo, coach of the team, said that with the new development, work continues.

“I had faith that the matter will be resolved that’s why I continued with my training. I used the period as if the team was on training tour. We are fully ready for the tournament.

“There is no cause for alarm our dream is to do Nigeria proud and by the grace of God it is achievable,” said Dedevbo.

He said team’s officials had played an important role in calming the players and encouraging them not to lose focus.

“You will recall that the team was air bound to Canada for its training tour on Monday 7th July but could not make it due to the FIFA threat of suspension. I have a formidable team and I know they will make the nation proud,” the coach added.

The Falconets are in Group C along with England, Mexico and Korea Republic.

Camp resumes as NTTF names team

After taking part in the just concluded International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Lagos World Tour and African Top 16 Cup, the final phase of camping for this month’s Commonwealth Games resumed just as the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) has named a strong ten-man team for the championship holding in Glasgow, Scotland.

Virtually all the players aiming to be part of the team for the Commonwealth Games took part in the two-in-one tournament held in Lagos last week.

To complete the list of the team for the games, NTTF organized a two-day trial for the players to select the final four that would join the already listed six-man team that were part of the team to the last World Championship in Tokyo, Japan.

At the end of the trial, Ganiat Ogundele and her sibling, Rashidat made the women team, while Portugal-based duo of Bode Abiodun and Jide Ogidiolu made the cut for the men team.

According to NTTF Secretary General, Chinedu Ezeala-Ogundare, the players were selected based on their present form and this was to ensure that Nigeria present a formidable team that would compete for medals against top teams like Singapore, England and India.

“We want to ensure that we give all the players equal opportunity to make the team and that is why we decided to organize the trials. So for us, we are already in camp before the tournaments last week and now we have returned to camp to ensure that we give our players the opportunity to train well before the departing the country for a two-week training tour of Italy,” she said.

The current African champion and ITTF World Cup-bound Aruna Quadri topped the list of players that will hoist Nigeria’s flag in Glasgow.

He will be joined by experienced and one of the continent’s most decorated players, Segun Toriola. Toriola who guided the team to a god outing at the World Championship in Japan will captain the team, while former junior sensation, Ojo Onaolapo will also be part of the team.

Others are Bode Abiodun and Jide Ogidiolu.

Germany-based Funke Oshonaike will captain the female team while other members are Edem Offiong, Cecilia Otu-Akpan, Ganiat Ogundele and Rashidat Ogundele.

The team is expected to depart for Italy next week for the training tour where they will move to Scotland for the games.

Super Eagles’ U.S. camping site: NFF to decide on Friday

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said it will on Friday decide which city in the United States the Super Eagles will camp in for its preparations for the 2014 World Cup.

NFF’s Head of Media, Ademola Olajire told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja the decision was delayed to enable the association’s agent conclude all arrangements. NAN reports that the 2014 FIFA World Cup will hold from June 12 to July 13 in Brazil.

Olajire said it would have been improper for the NFF to announce the camp site when the agent was yet to conclude the camping arrangements.

“It is obvious that the Eagles will camp in the U.S., but we will announce the city by the end of this week. I am in touch with the agent and he will finalise the arrangements by Friday,” he said.

On the Eagles’ involvement in an eight-nation tournament in the U.S., Olajire said the NFF had no financial commitment in the tournament. He said the Major League Soccer (MLS), the organisers of the tournament, had already communicated the NFF on the national team’s involvement.

Olajire said the Eagles were among the invited teams by virtue of being the African champions. NAN reports that Cote d’ Ivoire and Nigeria as well as one of the country’s World Cup Group F opponents, Bosnia-Herzegovina, are part of the tournament.

Other participants are Spain, Greece, Honduras, Bolivia and El Salvador. The tournament is expected to hold between May 27 and June 10.

Africa Junior tennis tourney: Team Nigeria for early camping

NIGERIA National Tennis Coach, Ubale Mohammed, on Wednesday said Team Nigeria would commence camping immediately for the Africa Junior Tennis Championships (AJTC) billed for March in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mohammed spoke ot the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja after eight of the national team players qualified for both the male and female categories of the championships in the U-14 and U-16 categories.

NAN reports that the qualifier, which is the third edition of the West and Central Africa AJTC qualifiers, was held at the Abuja National Stadium from Jan. 12 to Jan. 16.

Mohammed said playing at the qualifiers was different from playing at the main championships, adding that the courts and environment were different from what is obtainable in Nigeria.

According to him, Kenya has clay courts, adding that it was imperative that team Nigeria trained on different court surfaces before the tourney.

“We have two players each that have qualified for the main championships. We have to start camping now, because we will be playing in a completely different surface. We played the qualifying matches on a hard court and in Kenya, they have clay courts, which some of our players have not played on before.

“The camping has to start immediately to prepare us for the challenge. Playing on clay courts is different, because the movement and the bounce of the ball is different from that of the hard court,” he said.

Mohammed, however, said he was impressed with the performance of his players at the AJTC qualifiers.

“I am very impressed with the performance of my players; it has not been easy with the camping and then going into the qualifiers. About eight countries participated, including Nigeria, making it nine; the other countries are no pushovers because most of their players are not even based in their home countries.

“Either they are playing with international academies with the ITF or private academies. We were playing at home, it wasn’t easy. There was a lot of pressure but I am happy that the kids followed instructions. They withstood all the pressure and both the players and the coaches are happy because they did very well,” he said.

The coach added that he believes his players would get more points at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) ranking tournament which starts on Jan.17.

BRAZIL 2014 WORLD CUP: No Miami, Houston camps for Eagles

    • NFF insists on high altitude areas for camping
    • Nigeria’s two matches hold in altitude zones
    • Search for training site continues

Sportinglife can reveal authoritatively that Super Eagles players will not be camping in Houston or Miami in the United States, ahead of the 2014 World Cup because the two cities’ weather conditions do not correspond with the prevalent conditions that the Nigerian side will be facing in two of her Munidal matches in Brazil.

A decent source at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) told SportingLife that: “I can tell you for free that NFF is looking for a training camp for the Super Eagles. Miami and Houston don’t fit the climatic conditions in the cities where we will play two of our three preliminary games at the Brazil 2014 World Cup.

“We found out that two of those cities where we will be playing are high altitude areas and neither Miami nor Houston is a high altitude zones. So, both cities, no matter how beautiful their faciltities, won’t be what we need because weather is critical for the players during matches.”

“We prepared the Eagles very well for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and you saw how well we did during the competition. We don’t want to give any of our opponents any advantage, let alone the weather.

“If our players are struggling to cope with the weather, how do you expect them to give their best? So, undue advantage is what we shouldn’t give our opponents. Instead, we should be seen to have done our home work well before matches, hence the quest to look for high altitude areas akin to those two cities,” SportingLife’s source said.
