Coscharis, customer bicker over malfunctioning car

A Nigeria-based German, Mrs. Marie Omorodion, whose brand new BMW X6 which she bought from Coscharis Limited developed a fault, has alleged unfair treatment by the seller. But Coscharis says she is being economical with the truth as it has done enough to address her complaints, writes Adedeji Ademigbuji.

When Nigerian-based German, Mrs. Marie Omorodion, bought a brand new BMW X6 SUV from Coscharis Limited at N16 million about three years ago, she was convinced that the reputation of the brand made the car a reliable choice.

She was, however, shocked when the car started misbehaving no sooner than the car was delivered to her.

Omorodion, who, according to sources, has petitioned the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) lamented that her problem with Cosharis Limited, authorised auto dealer for top brands, started in 2012 shortly after she took delivery of the SUV car.

According to her, the car started misbehaving, graduating speedily from one fault to the other. She added that in spite of several efforts by the authorised distributor to address her complaints, the brand experience of the car has been appalling. She said the car started giving her problems from the very first day she bought it.

“I purchased the car in question on the 31st of July, 2012 for a sum of N16 million. The car was delivered on the 1st August, 2012. On taking delivery of the car, I pointed out to the Sales Manager at Coscharis, Victoria Island branch, then that the DVD system was not functioning. He  replied by assuring me that it would be fixed and that it was a matter of just replacing it. He said further that due to settings, it could happen and refuse to work on arrival from Germany. I agreed to it being replaced since the sales consultants had assured me that it was not a big deal.”

In fufillment of the auto dealer’s promise, Omorodion said a new DVD system was ordered and received on April 2013, about eight months after the car was purchased. But to her surprise, the new DVD system too refused to work and they concluded that the new one ordered was also faulty. Following the failure of the DVD, she said another DVD system was ordered with an order dated  27th June, 2013.

She said: “At this point, I realised that the car had issues but didn’t realise what the issues were. I was not anticipating any problem at all since it was a brand new car bought directly from Coscharis which is supposed to be the face of BMW in Nigeria.”

However, she said the car later developed another fault  while she was driving on the Lekki Expressway,  precisely by the Chevron toll gate at 100km per hour speed with no prior warning.

She continued: “It locked itself and shut down. I was terrified and scared that oncoming cars would run into me. I called the BMW maintenance office in Lekki-Epe for help. Officials came later and the car was towed to their workshop. The technical people later confirmed an entire transmission failure: what they called mechatronic gear box failure. This was just ridiculous.”

Having barely used the car for a year and three months, she said it was incredible such a brand new car could experience total transmission failure. After reporting the new development, she said the transmission was boxed and allegedly sent to Germany and a new one was ordered on the advice of German technicians. The car had to stay in the workshop for another six weeks before agearbox was put into it for her to use for another two weeks before the new one arrived.

She said: “During the six weeks, I was not offered any courtesy car which should normally be offered and should be a standard since the incident was due to no fault of mine. In Germany, this can never happen. So, why would you have different standards for Nigerians when we even spend more  money to buy these luxury cars considering the freight costs and high duty and clearing costs.”

She recalled that sometime in November last year, while driving home around 8pm in the same car with her kids, the car suddenly went off again.

“The car went off without any prior notice at all. It just shut itself down and refused to start. This was between the Chevron roundabout and the second toll gate towards Victoria Garden City. This time around, a diagnosis showed that it was pump failure and it had to be ordered again from Germany,” she lamented, adding that if the car had been purchased in Germany, it would have been replaced long ago.

She said after the car was fixed last year December 12, while she was driving from Law School, Victoria Island, towards the Civic Centre by the traffic light, the car went off again without any warning.

“I started off at top speed and to my surprise, right in the middle of the road, with cars coming behind me, my car once again stopped. There was no notice. It just stopped. I cried my eyes out because this happened at a dangerous junction with my children in the car. I called people to help me put up the caution signs and called BMW expressing my disgust. I had been fooled many times but because I really liked my car, I wanted to believe them and kept falling victim all the time,” she said.

The German said it was discovered that the brain box had packed up this time. Though Coscharis is said to have put the car in shape,  Omorodion has vowed not to have anything to do with it again.

The General Manager, Marketing and Corporate Services, Coscharis Group, Mr. Babarinde Abiona, told The Nation that Omorodion has decided to wage a war against a brand from her country but insisted that Coscharis respects every customer and as a result, it would not join her in the media war. He said the customer has made several threats to go to court but because the story is not as she painted it, she has not got the nerve to sue the company.

“We are not going to engage our customer on the pages of newspaper. Other papers have thrown the story into thrash can. She has threatened to go to court but we don’t know why she has not. We respect our customer. She felt this is the strategy she can use to blackmail us. Unfortunately, she is a German. The truth of the matter is that she is very economical with the truth,” he said.

Abiona stated further that Coscharis has given her warranty and other benefits. “If Coscharis has done any bad to her, BMW German would have used the German sentiment to please her and even complain about the way we handled her complaints as a customer.

“BMW has told her to come back to us but she will not tell you that some of us have championed her cause; we pushed for discount but she said we wanted to sell her car. “This is a car she bought in 2012 and we should be objective. She’s using CPC to threaten us. The fact is that we managed her car since 2012 when she started complaining. So, if we have done anything wrong, BMW would have used the German sentiment to sort her out. She has been rubbishing our brand in the media. She is just being economical with the truth. Three years down the line, she would have gone to court if truly she is pursuing a true cause,” he said.

  • Car owners can now earn advertising revenue!

Car owners can now earn advertising revenue!

Transit advertising is growing at a fast rate, creating competition for traditional media. The new fad in advertising is evolving from being a communication  wrap-around on company cars, mass transits and commercial vehicles, among others. The trend is offering individual car owners an opportunity to earn some income by allowing their cars
to be used  for advertising communications, writes ADEDEJI ADEMIGBUJI.

Trend-spotters in advertising communication are not sleeping. Everyday, they are awake, devising a cost-effective platform for advertisers to enhance the impact of campaigns on brands and create return-on-advertising-investment. In the latest trend, Nigerian private car owners are offering a viable platform for advertisers and advertising agencies. This benefit has been enjoyed by owners of land, taxi cabs, public mass transit and a host of others for a long time. But, with the new window for private car owners to rake in advert revenue, car owners are now advert message and campaign drivers.

Transit or driven media, is the practice of covering or wrapping any vehicle in vibrant, custom-designed vinyl sheets, turning a vehicle into a mobile billboard. The purpose of this is to provide advertising impressions. Unlike a stationed media such as billboards, transit advertising has an advantage of moving to any location after approval from outdoor regulatory authorities. The media, it is believed, has the power to further shrink the market share of traditional 46-sheets billboards and its modern form, Digital LED billboards which are stationed at specific locations, mostly traffic areas.

Branding a private car for transit advertising is not common in Nigeria. Media planners for a long time had relied on public mass transit, taxi cab or buses designed for sales promo while most companies also wrap their official vehicles with their communication materials sometimes.

The reason is that branded vehicles enjoy more audience than stationed hoardings. According to Outdoor Advertising Magazine, an international publication, wrapped vehicles have a 97 percent recall rate and 96 per cent of survey respondents thought transit advertising is more effective than traditional outdoor advertising. Another survey by a research firm, 3M, also noted that 91 per cent of the target noticed the text and graphics on these wrapped vehicles with 80 per cent recalling the specific advertisement.

This perhaps explained why the platform is popular abroad. For example, in some advanced markets, where such discovery had been established, brand owners are increasing their spending towards this line. A media company in South Africa, Provantage,  reported that this medium is reaching an estimated 18.2 million commuter daily. “This advertising medium poses enormous benefits for both the car owner and advertiser. The car owner will be compensated for every month which they have the advertisers’ campaign on their vehicle – which enables them to make extra cash. Advertisers benefit from getting enormous exposure for their brands, reaching their target markets for a lower cost than they would have to spend on other traditional and non-traditional medium of advertising,” say brand experts.

During the unveiling of the new trend in Nigeria on Monday, the managing director of brandmycar.com, Amaka Okolo said that advertisers are searching for cost-effective means of promoting their communication materials. She said the branding of private car though new in Nigerian marketing space, provides low cost mobile out of home advertising spaces on private cars and transit vehicles for effective brand messages and communication.

“This will help connect people with brands, match car owners who want effective mobile exposure, giving them a source of living and take the brands into smaller localised places where regular outdoor advertising cannot,” she said.

She said the goals of the platform is also to drive outdoor advertising, where it is most effective and visible, as car owners commute daily to schools, shops, churches, mosques and works. According to Okolo, “What makes this service unique is that it is the first of its kind in Nigeria and it is easily reached, very flexible, visible and recent.”

    How it works

Okolo explained that all car owners are expected to cover a minimum of 200 miles per month, so as to be paid an agreed amount to them. She said before such money is paid to car owners, the advertisers will verify compliance of cars through vehicle tracking reports to prevent falsehood by car owners. When engaged by advertisers.

She noted that the tracking report will show how many miles the car has covered within the agreed period of time the advert is supposed to run, this way, advertisers will know how far the advert has travelled.

Okolo further said that advertisers can either pick the cars they want online or can allow the company pick for them and then do the vetting.

She said that presently, there are about 700 branded private cars functioning in Nigeria. Under her company, brandmycar.com, but that this figure is low compared to what is obtainable in advanced countries. She believed it will grow as more advertisers buy into it.

    Demand for transit ad

The Chief Executive Officer of Noisemakers Advertising  Limited, one of the agencies that specialises in transit media, Mr. Jubril Dixion, believes that the platform is one of the a most effective platforms because of its reach.

According to him, “My experience convinced me that the platform is not only effective but important for brand building. It is the way through which one can take campaign to consumers, wherever they are,” he said.

Regulatory issues that maystall the new trend

Corporate brands political parties/politicians and even religious bodies have found vehicle branding and advertising as a very effective way of advertising their products and winning souls. It is not unusual in Lagos to see a BRT bus bearing the “Glo-Rule Your World’ advert, a taxi branded with the advert of a particular brand of condom or luxury bus with the lingo of ‘The Lord Chosen’. All these are pointer to the fact that the brands are reaping bountifully from transit media.

Despite the level of awareness and increased use of this platform, the fact that not all the branded vehicle on Lagos roads have the government seal of approval has often become an issue of discourse in many forms. To ensure that car owners are not harassed, Mrs.Okolo said any car owners subscribing to have their cars branded will be screened and ensured that they have valid driving documents such as vehicle insurance, drivers licence, certificate of road worthiness among others. She said after that has been been verified, a LAASA permit will be secured for car owners.

  • Woman charged with ‘stealing’ car

A Lagos businesswoman,Omolola Shittu, has been charged to court for allegedly stealing a Honda Accord car. But the woman in her defense said her decision  to end  a two-year-old relationship with her lover, Prince Hilary Unachukwu,  was  responsible for charges. The case is before an Igbosere Magistrate Court, Lagos. Charged along with her was another woman,  Rapheal Oge.

Shittu, an event planner,  was arraigned on August 11, this year,   alleged to have stolen a Honda Accord Saloon Car, otherwise known as “End of Discussion”.

She, however, petitioned  the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umaru Manko, an Inspector-General o0f Police (AIG),  to prevail on her  enstranged lover, Prince Unachukwu to stay out of her life to enable her move on.

Shittu and co-defendant have a  three-count charge preferred against them, but they pleaded not guilty before Chief Magistrate, Mrs.  Adeola Adedayo. Politics solely for material gainIn Suit No. A/38A/2014, the defendants were alleged to have  conspired to commit felony to wit: stealing of the said car valued at N1.6 million and thereby commiting an offence punishable under Section 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.

The second count reads: “That you Omolola Shittu on January 19, 2014 at about 7:00am at No. 14 Eric Manuel Crescent, off Bode Thomas, Surulere, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did steal Refrigerator (N72, 500:00) Gas cooker (N85, 200:00) TEC Generator (N66, 500:00) Washing Machine (N120, 800:00) TEC Generator (N91, 200:00)  valued at N503, 200:00, the property of Prince Hilary Unachukwu.”

The third count reads:  “That you Omolola Shittu, on the same date, time and place in the aforesaid magisterial district threatened the life of one Prince Hilary Unachukwu with scisors and thereby committed an  offence punishable under section 508 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the three-count charge and were consequently granted bail  and the matter was  adjourned till September 8.

They had earlier been arraigned on July 2, on the first two charges.

In her petition to Manko, dated July 15,  signed by her counsel, Mrs.  Iyabode Shonubi, titled: “Threats to the Life of Omolola Shittu” Unachukwu was alleged  to have sought reconciliation with her, but she refused.

The petition reads in part: “Due to our client’s refusal to accept Prince Hilary’s return into her life, Prince Unachukwu  framed up several untruths including accusing our client of stealing household items and a Honda car. The charge is before the Chief Magistrate Court, Igbosere and was filed by officers at Zone ll, Nigeria Police Force.”

Addressing a press conference during the weekend, Shittu, who spoke through her lawyer, Shonubi  claimed that the car  allegedly  stolen was presented to her by Prince Unachukwu as valentine gift on February 14, last year and that the receipt  had her name on it.

Shonubi said her client was first arraigned on July 2, but the matter was adjourned till July 21. She said on the next adjourned date when Shittu  was supposed to appear in court, Prince Unachukwu allegedly called her and gave her the impression that the matter has been settled amicably, but only for them to get there and realised that another charge had been brought to include threat to Prince Unachukwu ’s life.

“If she had not gone to court on that day, the implication on that adjourned date would mean that the magistrate would issue a bench warrant for her to be arrested. Despite her being in court as an obedient citizen, the magistrate re-arrested her in court and said the previous bail was terminated. We persuaded the magistrate that our client should continue on the previous bail, but she said no, that we needed to arrange for another bail,” Shonubi said.

Shittu, who fielded questions from journalists during the press conference,  lamented  that  she was subjected to various maltreatment while in custody at Kirikiri female prison.According to her,  a prison warder shaved her hair the first day she got there, made her to pack faeces, gave her a portion of grass to cut, gave her inmate’s uniform to wear and had  her photograph taken in spite of her not been convicted of any offence.

“I was arrested at Zone 2 on June 20, this year and spent three nights before they took me to Igbosere Magistrate Court. The police came to my house to arrest me. I was taken to Kirikiri Prison on August 11, after my second arraignment at Igbosere Magistrate Court, on a fresh charge,” she said.

Omolola, who gave a graphic details of her ordeal in the hands of her estranged lover, said she went through hell during the two years their affairs lasted, saying that he kept threatening her each time she told him she was no more interested in the r4elationship.

She alleged that  her lover threatened to  use his connection with the police to keep  bringing different charges against her until she is finally sent to jail. Shittu alleged that she did not enjoy any protection from the police on the matter at the Bode Thomas Police Station and Panti Police Station, Ebute Metta, claiming that on one occasion she visited  Panti, she was handed over to ASP Adegoke to handle the case. “The statement I wrote at Panti was taken to Prince Unachukwu. He came to show me the statement at home, asking me if I thought any policeman could arrest him. He said while he was in his office, one of the police officers brought the statement to his office, that he should look at the statement. “

She urged the Commissioner of Police to use his office to call her former lover to order, pointing out that  her life and that  of her nine year-old-son are at stake.

“I have not been sleeping in my house for the past few months now because he has been threatening to kill me. My son’s life is in danger. People around me, their lives are in danger. My own life is in danger too. Anytime I am going out, I am always looking left and right as if people are running after me. He has been calling and sending threat messages that except he is not Hilary Unachukwu, that is when I can survive. My life is at stake, my child’s life is at stake.”  When  The Nation contacted Prince Unachukwu  on phone , he declined comments, but said: “ You should ask her  what took her to Zone 2. You should ask her  what took her to Kirikiri. Thank you very much, God bless you.”

    Two held for ‘car snatching’

Two persons have been arrested by operatives of the Special Anti -Robbery Squad (SARS), Lagos Police Command, for alleged car theft.

They were arrested at Ojuelegba, Lagos Mainland, on August 18, following a tip-off.

The suspects – Musbao Ayinde (25) and Isiaka Afolabi (28) – are from Offa in Kwara State.

Ayinde, a technician resides at 2, Oko Oba Street, Ebute Meta, Lagos Mainland; Isiaka Afolabi (28), washes cars at Costain.

Police sources said the suspects operated around Ifo in Ogun State for about three years, but were caught when they attempted to operate in Lagos.

Two locally made guns were recovered from them.

A source said penultimate Thursday, the suspects hit a victim with gun butt before snatching his car.

“The man passed out and was dumped at a nearby bush where he was found and taken to hospital by passersby. It was at the hospital that he was revived”, the source said.

The victim was said to have taken his case to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police when there was no swift response to his distress call by police in the area.

The Decoy One led by the Officer in Charge of SARS, Abba Kyari, a Superintendent of Police (SP) swung into action and arrested the suspects with their guns.

Ayinde told The Nation: “We are car snatchers. We used gun to intimidate our victims. We never intended to shoot them. We prefer to run away than to fire a victim.

“I have only operated around Ifo in Ogun State twice. It was the operation on the Third Mainland Bridge that put us in this trouble. It was greed that made us come to Lagos State to rob and snatch vehicles despite the high risk involved.”

“I was asked to come and collect money by the buyer of one of the cars we snatched not knowing that he was with the police. When I got there, I was arrested after collecting N150,000 from the buyer,” he said.

Afolabi said: “I became a car snatcher because of my mother’s death and the bad poverty ravaging my family. My father is alive, but he could not solve the family’s financial problem.

“It was Ayinde who asked me to follow him to go and collect money for a vehicle sold to one of our buyers. Whe we got there, policemen arrested us. I have operated only three times. In the first operation I got N35,000; the second, I got nothing and from the third,  I got N30,000. It was Ayinde’s arrest that led to mine.”

Assistant Police Public Relations Officer, Lelma Kolle, an Assistant Superintendent (ASP), said the suspects were being interrogated as efforts were ongoing to arrest other armed robbery gangs connected to them. He said they would soon be charged to court.
