EPL: O’shea scores late as 10-man Burnley hold Chelsea

Dara O’Shea struck a late equaliser as 10-man Burnley secured a vital point away at Chelsea in the Premier League.

O’Shea headed in from Josh Cullen’s corner for relegation-threatened Burnley, three minutes after Cole Palmer had put the Blues back in front with a finish across goalkeeper Arijanet Muric.

Palmer had given Chelsea the lead in the first half, scoring a Panenka penalty after Lorenz Assignon received a second yellow card for fouling Mykhailo Mudryk in the box.

DOGS OF WAR: Man city clash with Chelsea at Etihad

Three months on from their riveting 4-4 draw at Stamford Bridge, Manchester City and Chelsea renew acquaintances at the Etihad Stadium for a Premier League showdown this  evening.

While the Citizens endeavour to chase down Liverpool at the summit, their West London counterparts are seeking to boost their hopes of securing a top-seven finish.

Fixtures continue to come thick and fast for Man City as they continue their pursuit of another historic treble, but Pep Guardiola’s men have had few problems establishing another one of their trademark winning runs during a crucial period in the second half of the campaign.

Indeed, the Citizens have won each of their last 11 matches across all tournaments, a run which began with success at the Club World Cup in mid-December and was most recently extended courtesy of a 3-1 away victory over Copenhagen in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.

Goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden ensured that Man City would take a two-goal advantage into their second leg on home soil in three weeks’ time; their focus now shift back to the Premier League title race as they attempt to close the two-point gap that separates them in second with leaders Liverpool, who could momentarily move five points clear if they beat Brentford in Saturday’s lunchtime kickoff.

Man City are gearing up for three home fixtures in their next four and will welcome a return to the Etihad where they have not lost any of their last 22 Premier League games. They have also won six of their last eight top-flight home meetings with Saturday’s opponents Chelsea, keeping a clean sheet in five of those victories in the process.

Clean sheets have been hard to come by for the Citizens this season, though, as Guardiola’s side have conceded in 11 of their last 13 Premier League games, and they can ill-afford to show any defensive frailties this weekend against a Chelsea side who fired four goals past them in the reverse fixture and have since netted eight times in their last three games this month.

Chelsea’s frustratingly inconsistent form has been the catalyst behind their mid-table mediocrity so far this season, and after suffering two four-goal defeats to Liverpool and Wolverhampton Wanderers, the pressure has since somewhat eased on head coach Mauricio Pochettino following two important 3-1 away wins over Aston Villa and Crystal Palace.

Five days after beating Villa in an FA Cup fourth-round replay with arguably their best performance of the season to date, the Blues were staring down the barrel of defeat against Palace on Monday as they trailed at half time after failing to register a single shot on target despite boasting 80% possession at Selhurst Park.

However, Chelsea came out a different side after the interval and their efforts were rewarded as ex-Eagles man Conor Gallagher bookended the second half with a brace, before Enzo Fernandez sealed the victory deep into stoppage time.

Having posted 10 wins, four draws and 10 defeats from 24 Premier League games, few can be surprised to see Chelsea languishing in 10th place, but securing European football for next season remains a possibility for the Blues as they are only two points behind Newcastle United in seventh, and seven points adrift of Manchester United in sixth – two teams Chelsea are still to play on home soil.

Pochettino and co must find consistency quickly if they wish to climb the table, but success on Saturday could prove challenging as they have failed to win any of their last seven meetings with Man City since securing a famous 1-0 triumph in the 2021 Champions League final; the Blues have also alarmingly conceded in 18 of their last 19 Premier League clashes with the Citizens.

Chelsea 4-0 Preston: Blues cruise into the FA Cup fourth

For the best part of an hour, Preston performed in a manner that suggested Stamford Bridge could be the scene of some FA Cup magic.

Then Chelsea flexed their muscles and quickly killed off that prospect with three goals in 11 tie-ending minutes before adding a late fourth.

It was looking tricky for Chelsea as they struggled for a long while to break down Ryan Lowe’s Championship side.

They were impressive and Chelsea the opposite.

But their four-goal margin of victory in the end made it an ultimately comfortable win and ideal start to an important few days in the cup competitions which represent Chelsea’s best chance of success this season and getting into Europe next term, which the hierarchy are expecting.

Against Preston it was a place in the fourth round up for grabs.

On Tuesday it is the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals against another second tier side in Middlesbrough and an opportunity to take a giant step towards Wembley.

Eventually and not without difficulty, it was one down for Chelsea and Pochettino.

The first goal was headed in by Armando Broja, an important deadlock-breaking goal for him as well as Chelsea.

The burden for scoring goals, and to prove to Chelsea’s owners they do not yet need to invest in a new striker, will be on his shoulders for the foreseeable future with Nicolas Jackson away at AFCON with Senegal. This was a good start.

Thiago Silva and Raheem Sterling then put the result beyond doubt before Enzo Fernandez made it 4-0 late on.

This was a big occasion for academy defender Alfie Gilchrist who was handed his first start by Pochettino.

His tenacious style had quickly endeared him to Chelsea supporters in his two previous cameos off the bench.

A Cruyff turn to get out of a tight spot and set Chelsea on the attack was another moment to lift he crowd.

It was Gilchrist too whose proactive defending sparked this game into life. A cross-field Preston was intercepted by Gilchrist who was on the front foot and alert.

He traded passes with Raheem Sterling before the England winger saw his eventual shot loop up into the air for Freddie Woodman to grab.

The two sides went on to trade chances during the rest of the half with Preston more than holding their own even if Chelsea unsurprisingly dominated possession.

Chelsea survive Luton comeback to win thriller

Late goals from Luton’s Ross Barkley and Elijah Adebayo created a nervous end to what should have been a comfortable win for Chelsea.

In a thrilling match at Kenilworth Road, the Blues started brightly and took the lead in the 12th minute, a poor clearance from Luton’s Issa Kabore handing the ball to Cole Palmer for the forward to drill low into the far corner past Thomas Kaminski.

Again Palmer was in the mix for Chelsea’s second as he worked the ball from left to right, feeding to Noni Madueke inside the box who managed to dribble past Amari’i Bell and smash the ball from a tight angle into the top corner.

Nicolas Jackson then threaded a pass through the middle to set up Palmer, who stayed calm to roll the ball away from the goalkeeper, then again from sliding defenders before slotting in to bag the Blues’ third in the second half.

But Luton refused to give in. They thought they had pulled a goal back through Adebayo, but his header was ruled out for offside in the build-up before Barkley then scored a header from Alfie Doughty’s corner.

The Hatters threw players forward looking to get back into the game and substitute Carlton Morris’ header was pushed onto the crossbar before Adebayo scored a second for Luton, setting up a nervous final few minutes for the visitors, but Chelsea were able to hold on for the win.

The victory means Chelsea have picked up two vital wins in the space of a week as they look to start climbing up the Premier League table after a challenging 2023.

FIFA confirms Inter, Chelsea, Man City for 2025 FIFA Club World Cup

FIFA have confirmed Inter are among the clubs qualified for the 2025 Club World Cup, which will be staged in the United States and will be officially named Mundial de Clubes FIFA.

The FIFA Council made ‘key decisions in relation to the first 32-team FIFA Club World Cup’ during a meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Sunday.

“The Council unanimously confirmed the club ranking methodology to be used as part of the key principles of access, which were approved at the Council’s meeting in March 2023,” FIFA said in a statement.

“In the case of European clubs, given that three full seasons and a full group stage of the fourth season of the UEFA Champions League have already been completed, and since UEFA has an existing club coefficient system, the current pre-existing methodology principles for the purpose of calculating the UEFA club coefficient in relation to matches in the UEFA Champions League only will be exceptionally applied to determine the ranking of European clubs for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025.”

Considering the approved principles of access, FIFA officially confirmed which clubs have already qualified for the Club World Cup that will be staged from 15 June to 13 July 2025 in the United States.

FIFA confirmed that the group stage will be composed of eight groups of four teams per group playing in a single-game round-robin format. The top two teams per group will progress to the Round of 16, played in a single-match knock-out game. Contrary to what usually happens in the World Cup, there will be no third-place play-off.

FIFA also confirmed that the FIFA Intercontinental Cup will be staged yearly from December 2024 and will feature ‘all confederation premier club competition champions and concluding with a final at a neutral venue between the UEFA Champions League winners and the winners of an intercontinental play-off between clubs from the other confederations.’

EPL: Chelsea beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea returned to winning ways with a hard-fought victory over a dogged Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues, beaten by Manchester United and Everton in their past two games, broke the deadlock nine minutes into the second half when Cole Palmer slotted home after fine work by Raheem Sterling.

It was 2-0 seven minutes later, Nicolas Jackson converting Palmer’s pass after Blades goalkeeper Wes Foderingham palmed the ball into the former Manchester City youngster’s path.

Chelsea enjoyed almost 80% possession across the 90 minutes, but Conor Gallagher’s long-range effort was their only shot on target in a forgettable first half for Mauricio Pochettino’s team.

Cameron Archer curled wide for the visitors in the first half and full Chelsea debutant Djordje Petrovic pulled off a fine save from Gustavo Hamer’s low free-kick, but that was the closest the visitors came to a breakthrough.

Second-half substitute Armando Broja should have increased Chelsea’s lead late in the second half but somehow skewed Palmer’s low delivery off target from point-blank range.

The Blues move up to tenth place on 22 points, while Sheffield United remain five points from safety at the foot of the table.

Pochettino targets transfers in January window for Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino has suggested Chelsea must consider spending in the January transfer window, saying his side “are missing something”.

Chelsea fell to back-to-back defeats for the first time under Pochettino when Everton handed them a 2-0 loss at Goodison Park on Sunday.

The result leaves Chelsea 12th  in the Premier League, 18 points off leaders Liverpool and 10 above the drop zone after 16 matches.

“We want to be in a different position in the table. The team played well against a very difficult team like Everton. We were much better than them but you need to score.

“After the first half of the season, we need to check. That is the reality. If we are not receiving enough, maybe we need to do some movement.

“That is the thing to analyse with the sporting directors, to see if we can change this dynamic and improve in the second half of the season.

“We need to be more aggressive. Then it’s a massive assessment and when the transfer window opens, we will see what we can do.

EPL: Ten-man Chelsea hold on to beat Brighton

Enzo Fernandez scored twice as 10-man Chelsea held on to beat Brighton in a thriller at Stamford Bridge.

The Argentine midfielder headed the Blues in front after 17 minutes and former Brighton loanee Levi Colwill doubled the lead four minutes later with his first Chelsea goal.

Facundo Buonanotte got one back for the visitors with a superb curling effort and they were right back in the game when Chelsea skipper Conor Gallagher was shown a second yellow card and sent off on the stroke of half-time.

However, Fernandez restored Chelsea’s two-goal advantage from the penalty spot midway through the second half.

Referee Craig Pawson had initially waved play on when James Milner challenged the breaking Mykhailo Mudryk inside the box but awarded the penalty after being sent to the screen by the video assistant referee.

Brighton continued to dominate possession but struggled to create the openings to really worry Chelsea until Joao Pedro pulled one back with a flicked header in the second minute of injury time.

The Seagulls were then given a penalty in the 10th additional minute for a handball by Colwill, only for VAR to intervene again and have the decision overturned as replays showed the ball hit the defender’s head rather than his outstretched arm.

Victory is just Chelsea’s second at home in the Premier League this season, while defeat means Brighton have now won just one of their last eight league games.
