Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea race for unsettled Balotelli

LIVERPOOL, Arsenal and Chelsea are monitoring Mario Balotelli’s situation at AC Milan after the striker indicated he could be ready for a move back to England.

Reports suggest that Balotelli has grown tired of the racist treatment he receives in his homeland and is now open to a return to the Premier League.

Additionally, the combustible Balotelli has tested Milan’s patience this season with occasional petulant outbursts that have grated with the club’s hierarchy.

But while all three clubs are interested in signing Balotelli if he becomes available, none of them see him as their first choice.

It is thought that Arsenal consider Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema their priority and are already in talks with the Spanish club over a move.

However, with Real on a high after claiming their tenth Champions League title over the weekend, the Gunners are wary that they may not be able to prise Benzema away.

In that event it is believed that Arsene Wenger would pursue talks with Balotelli’s representatives.

Similarly, Liverpool see Balotelli as the ideal man to replace Luis Suarez should he be tempted away after the World Cup.

The Anfield club are confident it won’t come to that after Suarez’s recent positive comments about staying in England, but are preparing for the worst-case scenario in any event.

Chelsea could similarly enter the race if they miss out on their top striking targets this summer, with Jose Mourinho familiar with the enigmatic player from his time in charge at Inter Milan.

And the Middlesbrough manager has confirmed his desire to take Chelsea defender back to the Riverside Stadium on loan next season.

The Chelsea youngster, who impressed at the World Cup, will return to England this week having further raised his profile with the Middlesbrough boss during his four appearances in Brazil.

“I like Kenneth not because of what he has done at the World Cup, I like him because he’s a very good guy and very good player,” Karanka told Skysports.

Omeruo made 14 appearances for Middlesbrough last season and Karanka would like to see the defender return to the Riverside Stadium.

“He played those games in a very good way.I was in contact with him during the World Cup,he wants to join us”

This may not be the news Omeruo fans wants to hear following his sterling display for Nigeria, with the whole world writing that Chelsea will need him next season.

    Chelsea agrees to sign Costa

Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign striker Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid.

The Spain international had been frequently linked with a move to Stamford Bridge following an impressive campaign with the Liga champions.

And Chelsea confirmed on Tuesday that they had met the buy-out clause for the 25-year-old.

“Chelsea Football Club can confirm an agreement has been reached with Atletico Madrid for the transfer of Diego Costa, with Chelsea meeting the buy-out clause for the Spanish international,” read a statement on the Premier League club’s website.

Costa, a member of the Spain squad who crashed out of the FIFA World Cup in the group stages, scored 36 goals for Atletico last season, helping the club to domestic glory and the final of the UEFA Champions League.

He becomes the second high-profile signing of the close-season from La Liga for Jose Mourinho, who also acted quickly to bring in Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona.

Costa will be tasked with helping to improve a Chelsea frontline that was often bemoaned by Mourinho during his first season back at the club.

Samuel Eto’o, Fernando Torres and Demba Ba all faced criticism from Mourinho last term – with the Portuguese prefering to name Andre Schurrle as a central striker at times.

  • Fabregas joins Chelsea

    Fabregas joins Chelsea

Chelsea has completed the signing of Barcelona midfielder, Cesc Fabregas, on a five year deal, Goal reports.

Jose Mourinho’s side is believed to have paid £30million for Fabregas, who is currently on World Cup duty with Spain.

The former Arsenal star scored eight La Liga goals for Barcelona and provided a further 19 assists in 36 appearances last season and thanked the Catalan giants after sealing his move to Stamford Bridge.

Fabregas told the club’s official website: “Firstly I would like to thank everyone at FC Barcelona where I enjoyed three wonderful years. It was my childhood club and I will always be proud and honoured that I had a chance to play for such a great team.

“I do feel that I have unfinished business in the Premier League and now is the right time to return.

“I considered all the other offers very carefully and I firmly believe that Chelsea is the best choice. The club matches my footballing ambitions with the hunger and desire to win trophies. Chelsea has an amazing squad of players and an incredible manager. I am fully committed to this team and I can’t wait to start playing,” he stated.

Chelsea, Omeruo’s reps meet in London next week

Representatives of Super Eagles’ defender, Kenneth Omeruo will use the international friendly tie between Nigeria and Scotland billed for May 28th in England as an opportunity to have another round of discussion with Chelsea over the future of the player.

Chelsea are desperate to keep their hold on Omeruo whose contract with the Stamford Bridge side expires June, 2015. They want to commit him to a new deal that will tie him down to Chelsea for another three years with other clubs showing interest in him.

Speaking with SportingLife from Holland, Omeruo’s football advisor, Chika Akujobi said that he would be hitting England next week for a clear-the-air talk with Chelsea over the transfer negotiation of the Eagles’ defender.

He said Chelsea have been showing good sign at the negotiation table based on their response to the last discussion with them where they were told to double the offer they made for Omeruo owing to his massive growth in the game with the Eagles and the clubs he has gone on loan with. Akujobi also noted that he would use the opportunity also to watch the Nigeria versus Scotland’s friendly tie at the Craven Cottage.

“I will be in England next week to have another discussion with Chelsea over the future of Kenneth Omeruo. I know they are desperate to have him but we must make everything formal.

“There are many clubs desirous of Kenneth and we will like him to sort out his future with Chelsea before the start of the World Cup. Chelsea also want it like that and that is the more reason why we need to sit down to discuss about him.

“I will be at the Craven Cottage too to watch the Eagles and the Scotland’s friendly match on May 28th,” Akujobi told SportingLife.

Meanwhile, Eagles’ defender, Kenneth Omeruo  will leave for England today ahead of the weekend opening of the Nigeria’s senior national team’s camp for the friendly tie with Scotland.

  • MIKEL- I’m not ready for marriage

MIKEL- I’m not ready for marriage

Tailwind news that Super Eagles’ star midfielder, John Mikel Obi, is on the verge of tying the nuptial knot might be just a ruse after all, following a frank conversation with The Nation Sport & Style which was facilitated by one of his long-trusted confidants.

Mikel, Africa’s second best footballer, has been romantically linked to a bevy of Nigerian beauties and had featured repeatedly on the list of the most eligible bachelors in the country. Recently, the social media was buzzing over news that the Chelsea’s Nigerian star has finally made up his mind to settle down with a Russian beauty in spite of alleged dalliances with some Nigeria’s stunning models.

First it was Nollywood gal, Rita Dominic, that the rumour mill said she was dragging Mikel to the altar after they posed together in a photograph taken in London. On Rita’s heels came delectable Sandra Okagbue who has been face of Delta Soap since 2010.

Mired in the marriage mess, a bewildered Mikel expressed his indignation in an interview syndicated on Sports Focus anchored by Kayode Tijani

“I know normal people don’t go through what I am going through now when it concerns finding a wife to marry, normal people don’t at all,” Mikel said. “Believe me it’s so difficult, very difficult, it’s so difficult you just have to leave it to God.

“ To find someone who truly loves you, there might be someone who really loves me truly for who I am but I may not be aware, but maybe you don’t know but you may think she’s one of those people that love you for who you are or what you have, because of your money. But maybe she’s there for you, you never know, you get so confused now I have decided I will just leave it to God to decide who I get married to,” he noted

But in his major interview since the 2013 African Footballer of the Year Gala early this month, Mikel has categorically stated that marriage was not yet on his mind even as he kept the identity of the woman of his dream close to his chest.

“I can’t say (when I’m going to get married) because that is not on my agenda now but when God says it is time, it will happen,” confessed Mikel to The Nation Sport & Style. “I don’t want to talk about that (searching for would-be wife) now, it is a private matter.”

Yet, Mikel is still revelling in the joy of winning the UEFA Champions League at the expense of Bayern Munich in Munich in 2012, picking that as his best moment ever since fate led him to the Stamford Bridge after a protracted transfer tussle with Manchester United soon after he helped Nigeria win silver medal at the 2005 FIFA World Under-20 Youth Championship in Holland. Excerpts…

You scored a goal in a Cup game against Derby County, how do you feel since you don’t score often?

It was nice. Great feeling. It was an important goal for us because we needed to win; it was in the second half, so the goal opened the door for us. I was happy.

When you score, the celebration is always different from that of your teammates, what do you have to say about that?

(Laughter) May be because I’m not a regular scorer and the fans usually urge me to celebrate.

Are you looking forward to scoring more goals for Chelsea?

I do wish to score but I’m not under pressure to score. My role doesn’t give me such chance but when I have the chance I’ll try to get it. I think I will get more, but above all, I am always happy to contribute to my team’s success whenever I am on. Team success is paramount for us here.

Talking about winning trophies, you have won almost all the trophies one can think of at club level, what is your target this season?

Chelsea is a team that encourages you to win trophy. That is the mentality here and it is good for us. It has become a habit. I think we can win every trophy we are playing in.

Chelsea beat Manchester United 3-1 last weekend, does that result send signal that Chelsea will win the league?

No, we still have a lot of games to play. We are in contention and getting such result against a contender is a good one for us.

When is the wedding bell going to ring?

(Laughter) I can’t say, because that is not in my agenda now but when God says it is time it will happen.

Are you still searching or you already have your Miss Right, with reports linking you to many ladies?

I don’t want to talk about that now, it is private. (Laughter)

You won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Super Eagles last year, how are you looking forward to Brazil 2014?

They are different competitions. I was happy to win my first Nations Cup gold medal last year. I am looking forward to a very impressive performance at the World Cup. I believe we will do well.

    Any target?

No. We will know when the competition starts.

Who motivates you more at Chelsea?

A lot of players that I met there. Drogba, Essien made me feel at home because of the African brotherhood. Terry is nice, Lampard too. I also learnt a lot from Maka (Makalele).

How do you like to dress?

I dress based on where I am going. The occasion determines what I wear but I love it simple and smart.

Chelsea on top by Christmas – Mikel

Nigeria star Mikel Obi has said Chelsea aim to be top of the English Premier League table by Christmas.

The London club is fourth on the table with 33 points, three points behind leaders Liverpool and faces a litmus test in Monday’s capital city derby against local rivals Arsenal.

And on Boxing Day the former European champions host Swansea City.

“We want to be top of the table by Christmas and that’s what we are aiming for,” MTNFootball.com quoted Mikel as saying on Premier League Television (PLTV).

“We need to put the finishing touches and finish off chances when we get them. At the same time we have to defend well too.

“We want to go to the Emirates Stadium on Monday night and prove what we are made of.

However, the Nigeria international midfielder is first to admit Arsenal will be a hard nut to crack at the Emirates.

“There has been some stability at Arsenal. And I think people criticizing the team for failing to win a trophy have helped too. Arsenal has not won a trophy yet but you can see the team is heading in the right direction,” he said.

“Arsenal has a very good chance of winning the league title but so do we.”

Mikel said “The Special One” Jose Mourinho loves to win and hates losing.

“Mourinho makes his views clear to us after games,” he said. “If we win, he’s happy. If we don’t, he’s not. Hopefully, by Monday, we will put things right. We are playing well and we are doing a few things correctly.”

  • Mourinho has ‘faith’ in Omeruo

    Mourinho has ‘faith’ in Omeruo

Chelsea defender, Kenneth Omeruo, has been told he has a future at the club by Portuguese manager, Jose Mourinho.

Omeruo spent the 2012/13 season on loan at Eredivisie club, ADO Den Haag where he made 27 appearances in the league.

He opted not to renew the alliance with the Alles Door Oefening and returned to Stamford Bridge instead.

Four months into the 2013/14 season, the 20-year-old has just a handful of youth team appearances under his belt and with several talents at the disposal of the “Special One,” Omeruo’s chances of forcing his way into the first-team look pretty grim.

The centre-half however believes he did not make a mistake not renewing his loan deal at Den Haag and explained that Mourinho has assured him that he will eventually get his chance at Chelsea.

“I did not make a mistake leaving ADO Den Haag. It was time to move on and only injury has slowed me down this season,” Omeruo told supersport.com.

Omeruo injured his shoulder in the summer and after undergoing a surgical procedure to repair the damage, the centre-half made a return to duty and even played for Nigeria in a World Cup qualifying playoff against Ethiopia on November 16.

He believes his career is now back on track.

  • Man Utd rival Chelsea, Liverpool for Musa Mohammed

Manchester United have joined the battle for Nigeria U-17 World Cup winning captain Musa Mohammed.

The Daily Star says United are hoping to win the race to sign Nigerian starlet Mohammed ahead of Chelsea, Liverpool and Barcelona.

Chelsea and Liverpool have been keeping tabs on the young starlet and were weighing up whether to make a January bid for FC Heart Academy star.

However, United are now ready to trump their Premier League rivals by attempting to secure Mohammed, who has also attracted the interest of Spanish giants Barcelona.

United are also interested in Mohammed’s Nigeria teammate Kelechi Iheanacho.
