  • FA charge Chelsea with 74 breaches of rules regarding agents, intermediaries

FA charge Chelsea with 74 breaches of rules regarding agents, intermediaries

Chelsea were hit with 74 charges by the Football Association on Thursday after the London club were accused of breaching regulations covering football agents, intermediaries and third-party investment in players spanning more than a decade.

The FA did not elaborate on the charges but Chelsea said the matters were ‘self-reported’ by the club after the change in ownership in May 2022.

“The conduct that is the subject of the charges ranges from 2009 to 2022 and primarily relates to events which occurred between the 2010-11 to 2015-16 playing seasons,” the FA said in a statement.

At the time, the London club was owned by Roman Abramovich, but the Russian billionaire put Chelsea up for sale in 2022 following sanctions after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Abramovich, who bought the club in 2003, completed the sale to an investment group led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

“During a thorough due diligence process prior to completion of the purchase, the ownership group became aware of potentially incomplete financial reporting concerning historical transactions and other potential breaches of FA rules,” Chelsea said in a statement.

“Immediately upon the completion of the purchase, the club self-reported these matters to all relevant regulators, including the FA.

“The club has demonstrated unprecedented transparency during this process, including by giving comprehensive access to the club’s files and historical data.

“We will continue working collaboratively with the FA to conclude this matter as swiftly as possible.”

The FA said Chelsea have until September 19 to respond to the charge.

A source at the club told Reuters they had opened their books to the FA so England’s soccer governing body can make educated judgements on the historical payments.

The source could not reveal the nature of the charges or the irregular payments as it is an ongoing legal matter but confirmed they were related to the men’s team.

Chelsea are also hoping the FA takes their transparency into account if the alleged breaches result in sanctions which could range from fines, points deductions or even transfer bans.

FIFA had handed Chelsea a transfer ban in 2019 after they were found guilty of breaching rules regarding 29 overseas players under the age of 18.

In July 2023, European soccer body UEFA had reached a settlement with Chelsea over the submission of incomplete financial information, related to “historical transactions” between 2012-2019.

At the time, the owners said they had proactively reported instances of potentially incomplete financial reporting to UEFA.

Two weeks later, the Premier League said it was investigating potential financial rule breaches at Chelsea under Abramovich’s ownership.

The Times reported that the inquiry encompasses multi-million-pound payments to undisclosed offshore entities, with connections to football intermediaries.

In July this year, Chelsea were also fined 31 million euros ($36.31 million) by UEFA for breaches of its financial rules by not complying with the football earnings rule and breaching the squad cost rule.

Chelsea had agreed to a four-year settlement with UEFA to avoid the risk of being hit with a further 60 million euros if they do not get their finances in order.

Chelsea face 74 FA charges over agent payments

Chelsea have been charged by the Football Association with 74 alleged rule breaches related to payments to agents between 2009 and 2022.

The charges are primarily focused on transfers between the 2010-11 and 2015-16 seasons.

Three deals that form part of the investigation involved Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto’o and Willian.

There is no suggestion of any wrongdoing on the part of those players.

Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich was in control of the club from 2003 to 2022, before selling Chelsea to a consortium led by American investor Todd Boehly and private equity firm Clearlake Capital.

The alleged rule breaches concern agents, intermediaries and third-party investments in players.

Chelsea, who said they had reported the potential rule breaches to the FA themselves, have until 19 September to respond.

There are a wide range of options available to sanction Chelsea, including a fine, transfer embargo and points deduction. However, the Blues’ high level of co-operation will be factored inand the club don’t expect to be hit with a sporting sanction.

“During a thorough due diligence process prior to completion of the purchase, the ownership group became aware of potentially incomplete financial reporting concerning historical transactions and other potential breaches of FA rules,” Chelsea said.

“Immediately upon the completion of the purchase, the club self-reported these matters to all relevant regulators, including the FA.

“The club has demonstrated unprecedented transparency during this process, including by giving comprehensive access to the club’s files and historical data.”

In July 2023, Chelsea were fined £8.6m by Uefa for breaking Financial Fair Play rules as a result of “submitting incomplete financial information” between 2012 and 2019.

Those breaches were reported by the new Stamford Bridge ownership following the club’s sale in May 2022.

As reported by BBC Sport in October 2023, transfers involving Eto’o and Willian are also part of a Premier League investigation into potential financial rule breaches by Chelsea.

The Premier League confirmed to BBC Sport that this investigation is still ongoing.

Both players moved to the club when Abramovich was in charge, joining from Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala in 2013.

EPL: Chelsea top of league table after beating Fulham 2-0

Striker Joao Pedro continued his scoring streak as Chelsea benefited from controversial refereeing decisions to beat rivals Fulham 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Joao Pedro headed the opener in first-half injury time to score his fifth goal in five starts across all competitions since his £55m move from Brighton, with midfielder Enzo Fernandez scoring a second-half penalty.

However, referee Robert Jones took centre stage after making several controversial decisions.

The first ruled out Fulham midfielder Josh King’s goal in the 21st minute. His team-mate Rodrigo Muniz was judged to have stepped on Trevoh Chalobah in the build-up by the video assistant referee (VAR) Michael Salisbury.

Jones confirmed the decision after viewing the pitchside monitor but there appeared to be minimal contact in what also looked a natural action by striker Muniz, while playing with his back to goal.

Joao Pedro further punished Fulham, who dominated the first 45 minutes, by scoring a header from Fernandez’s corner with the final action of the half.

Fernandez then scored from the penalty spot to seal victory after Ryan Sessegnon was judged to have handled the ball in the penalty area.

It was a difficult decision for the officials but again went in Chelsea’s favour as Fulham manager Marco Silva fumed at referee Jones.

Chelsea secured an important victory before the international break despite losing striker Liam Delap to a hamstring injury early in the first half.

UEFA honours Chelsea for historic European feat

Chelsea have been recognised by UEFA for becoming the first club in history to win all four of the governing body’s major competitions.

The London club received a special award on Thursday during the Champions League group stage draw in Monaco, following their UEFA Conference League triumph in May, where they defeated Real Betis 4-1 in Wrocław.

The victory completed Chelsea’s collection of the Champions League, Europa League, Cup Winners’ Cup, and the Conference League, a clean sweep never before achieved by any club.

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin presented the award to Chelsea officials at the ceremony, describing the achievement as unique in European football history.

    Chelsea’s continental honours now include:

    *2 Europa League titles (2013, 2019)

    *2 Cup Winners’ Cups (1971, 1998)

  • Nkunku nears Chelsea exit as Garnacho deal moves closer

Nkunku nears Chelsea exit as Garnacho deal moves closer

AC Milan have agreed a £36m deal – including add-ons – to sign Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku as the Blues close on a deal for Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Nkunku, 27, is expected to accept a pay cut in order to join the Italian side on a five-year contract and has been given permission to travel for a medical.

The Blues have also included a sell-on clause as part of the deal, which will end Nkunku’s two-year stay at Stamford Bridge.

The move will have wider implications for Chelsea, with negotiations advancing to sign Garnacho.

The Argentina international, 21, has not played for United this season and is one of several players at the club who has been training away from the main group.

No fee has yet been agreed between the two clubs but BBC Sport has been told by sources that a deal is close.

Meanwhile, striker Nicolas Jackson is also in talks over an initial loan move to Bayern Munich, which could include an obligation to buy.

The sale of Nkunku also means Chelsea can boast about making a profit in the transfer market, raising a league-high of an estimated £309m to balance about £277m in player purchases – however that would rise if the Garnacho deal went through.

Player sales are important to Chelsea this summer because of Uefa sanctions which included a fine of 31m euros (£26.7m), but also a requirement to maintain a “positive transfer balance” in this window to register new signings for the Champions League.

Nkunku scored 18 goals and got five assists in 62 matches for Chelsea, after joining from RB Leipzig for about £52m in 2023.

The France international leaves having played a significant role in Chelsea winning the Club World Cup and Conference League this year.

  • Chelsea draw blank in Crystal Palace stalemate

Chelsea draw blank in Crystal Palace stalemate

Chelsea suffered a Club World Cup hangover as they were lucky to escape with a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace to open their Premier League campaign on Sunday.

Palace were denied an early opener when Eberechi Eze’s free-kick was ruled out by a VAR review for Marc Guehi obstructing the Chelsea wall.

New Chelsea signing Estevao came closest to snatching a winner for the home side, but the newly-crowned world champions were blunt in attack against a well-organised Palace defence.

The Eagles key duo of Guehi and Eze started despite mounting speculation the England internationals are set to join Liverpool and Tottenham, respectively.

“As long as they are 100 percent committed, they will play as they are so good,” said Palace boss Oliver Glasner.

“They didn’t just show they are great footballers, but they are great persons and that’s what I expected.”

Eze thought he had opened the scoring with a blistering free-kick that had too much power for Robert Sanchez.

The goal was disallowed for Guehi’s role in creating a gap by man-handling Moises Caicedo into the Chelsea wall.

Chelsea’s demolition of European champions Paris Saint-Germain in the Club World Cup final last month had raised the Blues’ hopes they can challenge for a first Premier League title since 2017.

But Enzo Maresca bemoaned his side’s lack of preparation time since beating PSG in New York just 35 days ago.

“They played about eight (pre-season) games, we played just two so we tried our best,” said the Italian.

“We expected a tough game. Apart from the first half free-kick, we didn’t concede any chances.”

Estevao scored against Chelsea at the Club World Cup in his final game for Palmeiras.

The Brazilian has been hyped as one of the world’s brightest young talents but lacked the composure to finish when he sliced high and wide from the middle of the box.

Nottingham Forest made light of manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s pre-season fears over a lack of signings with a dominant 3-1 win over a much-changed Brentford.

Chris Wood struck twice either side of Dan Ndyoe’s debut goal for Forest on a nightmare afternoon for new Brentford boss Keith Andrews.

“It was a very good first half. The combinations were really good, beautiful goals,” said Nuno.

“This is why we are insisting on a good balanced squad that gives us options and solutions.”

The Bees have lost their manager, captain and top scorer in the off-season.

Thomas Frank left to take charge of Tottenham, Bryan Mbeumo got his dream move to Manchester United and Arsenal secured Christian Norgaard.

Yoane Wissa was also missing from the Brentford squad ahead of an expected move to Newcastle.

Igor Thiago’s first goal for the club from the penalty spot late on was the only consolation for the visitors.

“I do have genuine belief but we have to take responsibility for a first half that wasn’t good enough,” said Andrews.

FIFA Club World Cup: Chelsea cruise into next round with 3-0 win over Esperance

Three late goals in each half were all Chelsea Football Club of London needed to advance to the next round of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup after a dominant 3-0 win over Esperance de Tunisie.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the match, which was played at the Lincoln Financial Field Stadium, Philadelphia, U.S., had no fewer than 32,967 fans in attendance.

Tosin Adarabioyo got Chelsea into the lead three minutes into the first-half stoppage time, before new signing Liam Delap doubled the lead just seconds before the break, putting Chelsea in a commanding 2-0 lead.

Chelsea restarted the game and responded to  the half-time talk by picking it up from where they left it in the first half.

Christopher Nkunku missed an opportunity to add to the tally in the 58th minute when he glided a chance from a fine team play.

Noni Madueke failed to make it 3-0 in the 63rd minute when his opportunity scrambled through the goal mouth to the disappointment of the few Chelsea fans at the match.

The centre referee awarded Chelsea a penalty with a quarter of an hour remaining in the game, but the video assistant referee (VAR) overturned the on-field decision.

Tyrique George made it 3-0 on the stroke of the seventh added time to give the London-based English Premier League side a commanding end to the game.
