  • Neglected Enugu community appeals to Chime

Umualor community in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State has petitioned Governor Sullivan Chime over what it described as its prolonged neglect. The community wants him to intervene and reverse the situation.

In a statement signed by the coordinator, Umualor United For Change (UUC), Comrade Ogbuzuru Ejike, the community said it suffered a litany of economic and political neglect that arose from age-long non-compliance with the power sharing formula in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area by other communities that make up the local government.

Ejike said even though it was a well-known fact that Umualor remained the oldest town in the local government area, none of its indigenes has been given an opportunity to occupy any elective political position.

The development, he noted, has tended to shut out his people from the vast dividends of democracy and good governance which successive regimes and even the current Chime administration have provided.

“The setbacks of this neglect began with and are further heightened by the fact that out of the eleven political wards allocated to the local government, Umualor barely has one where five communities exist in the local government. Ehamufu has four wards, Ikem has two, Mbu has two and Neke has two as well. The imbalance has existed given the fact that all the other communities at the forefront of political power all these while though it wise that we were merely a hamlet that needed no political attention and thus had no use of the ward during the delineation process.

“It is not pellucid and crystal clear that we have been cheated all these while from the above your excellency, even when all the communities in the local government have agreed and officially accented to a zoning system that would ordinarily make Umualor Development Area the next community to produce a candidate for elective political position?. We want to crave your indulgence and wealth of political wisdom as our great political leader therefore to assist us in securing the ticket for the state house of assembly come 2014 as a way of enhancing our political chance and future in the state.

“Your Excellency, it is unfathomable that where eleven wards exist, a community with just one ward can scarcely produce a political office holder even on the grounds of strict adherence to rotational formula let alone when it has been jettisoned for political advantages.

“Your Excellency, we have reasoned with this ancient Igbo philosophy which asserts that when taken for granted, gold in one’s hand is sometimes considered like cheap copper and have seen that if the current happenings continue, the Umualor community might never test the opportunity of steering the political wheel of the local government nor any other political position deemed rightful for Isi-Uzo Local Government and this we say God forbid,” he stated.

The coordinator of UCC further added that the chronology of events has shown that Umualor has been relegated to the background in spheres of access to political power, adding that as a result, they wished to know if they were mere commodity or a community sharing equal rights with their neighbors.

He expressed dismay that Umualor in this modern age has no passable roads, no access to electricity, no telecommunication network, stating that the community suffers patiently deplorable state of poor medical facilities.

“We know that you have been reputable to have a listening ear to the marginalised. Awgu, Nsukka, Oji River among others would all bear witness to this. We believe that if you delve into this matter as one of your last developmental strides as the governor we would not and never remain the same again, it is well with you sir,” Ejike pleaded.

  • Enugu professionals to Chime: forget the Senate

Enugu professionals to Chime: forget the Senate

Enugu State professionals worldwide have asked Governor Sullivan Chime to forget his senatorial ambition in the interest of the state.

They said his withdrawal from the election will ensure that the comparative advantage Senator Ike Ekweremadu’s continuity in the Senate would bring to the state and the Southeast is not jeopardised.

Their stand was contained in a letter to the governor signed by over 1,000 members across the globe.

The principal signees are Uchenna Nnamani for Enugu East; Desmond Ugwu for Enugu North and Moses Chinegwu for Enugu West.

Writing under the auspices of Enugu Concerned Professionals Worldwide, the professionals asked Chime, in the interest of the state, to “listen to the collective voices of reason and consider the distractions and great loss inherent in your contest for an elective position.”

They listed 10 reasons why the governor should stay away from elective office.

The group said: “As a lawyer, we will not bore you with the constitutional provision of no-term limit for the legislative arm of our presidential system of government.

“The importance of no-term limit must override the need for zoning, which is not constitutional.

“The increase in effectiveness of legislators is due to experience: the more you do something, the better you get at it. Experienced legislators make good laws.

“The Senate and the House of Representatives have incumbency and seniority rules, which favour re-elected and experienced lawmakers. Examples abound worldwide.

“The Enugu West has one Senate position and two House of Representatives positions. The ranking senator is also the Deputy Senate President and the Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament.

“The people of this zone will be short-changed if the incumbent senator is denied the opportunity to be re-elected. Besides the loss of seniority, a change in the Senate wipes away the power and influence of the exalted office, which is fifth in the succession ranking in the country.”

The Enugu professionals insisted that Chime’s presence in the Senate would short-change the state.

They said: “Enugu State houses the capital of Southeast, the home of Ndigbo. The zone has benefited from federal appointments and the projects emanating from the Office of the Deputy Senate President. The loss of the Office of Deputy Senate President and Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament will be a worst disservice to be visited on any people by their leader.

“It is necessary for the Southeast to copy the Northcentral, which has given automatic ticket to the Senate President. The governor should be in the vanguard of making sure that the position is retained for the people of Southeast, Enugu State and, specifically, Enugu West.”

The group feared that the political turmoil generated by the governor’s interest in an elective position could create a rift in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

They said there could be violence and loss of lives, insisting that it would be wrong to engender wasting of lives over “unnecessary political battles, which are not even in the interest of the people.”

The professionals noted that Chime might have been best fit for the executive position, as “the art of legislation calls for the type of political sagacity needed to lobby, move and pass legislation.”

“The eight-year experience in the executive position has prepared you better for executive position and less to delve into legislature, where a different personality is better fit,” they said.

The professionals urged the governor to focus on bequeathing a legacy and “stay out of elective office to allow the people of Enugu East, North and West elect their senators and representatives.”

  • Forum endorses Chime, Nwobodo

    Forum endorses Chime, Nwobodo

As the primaries of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) approach, Enugu State professionals operating under the aegis of the Enugu Professional Forum (EPF) have supported the senatorial ambitions of Governor Sullivan Chime and his Chief of Staff, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo.

They are believed to be interested in the Enugu West and Enugu East senatorial seats.

Rising from its monthly meeting yesterday in Enugu, the EPF in a communiqué by the President, Nebechi Ugo and Secretary, Tony Ugwu, also approved the processes, which led to the emergence of Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as the consensus candidate of the PDP for next year’s governorship election.

The group said Chime and Nwobodo earned its endorsement following their “exceptional performance and exemplary professional approach to the issues pertaining to government, governance  and political administration.”

It noted that the duo, by their exploits, gave the people the reason to believe again in government, especially when it is in the hands of professionals.

The body said: “As a lawyer and administrator, Chime has, through his achievements in office, redefined public administration and good governance. He has shown that with good vision, clear conscience,  selflessness and the commitment expected of a true professional, real and enduring changes can be brought to the lives of the indigenes.”

EPF praised Mrs. Nwobodo, whom it said, applied her professional experience and knowledge as a chartered accountant and an administrator to ensure that the governor’s vision for the state was accomplished, even in the face of financial challenges.

The group said the duo deserved to be engaged in higher services to the state and nation, adding that it was confident that they would excel.

It noted: “In Governor Chime and Mrs. Nwobodo, Enugu State is presenting to Nigeria, two consummate professionals and proven administrators, who have left an indelible mark on the history of governance. They belong to the best of the best and they are assets to this country.”

The communiqué described the processes, which produced Ugwuanyi as the “quintessence of democracy”, saying although they (processes) would not foreclose primaries, they  portrayed the thinking of Enugu people.

  • Enugu guber: ‘Chime had no hand in Ugwuanyi’s emergence’

Enugu guber: ‘Chime had no hand in Ugwuanyi’s emergence’

THE Enugu Professionals Forum (EPF) has dismissed as unfounded and misleading, statements credited to the Senator representing Enugu North Senatorial District, Ayogu Eze, suggesting that the process that produced Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as the consensus governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was manipulated to favour the House of Representatives member.

A statement signed by Tony Agu, the publicity secretary of the group, said it was particularly uncharitable for anyone to insinuate that Governor Chime had a hand in Ugwuanyi’s emergence when the choice was clearly and openly made by the people of Enugu North Senatorial District to which the PDP in the state had zoned the gubernatorial slot.

He noted that the governor’s role in at the meeting where Ugwuanyi was endorsed and which Senator Eze and other aspirants also attended, was that of an impartial observer who merely introduced the issue and never contributed in the discussions that culminated in the selection of Ugwuanyi by the zonal caucus of Enugu North PDP.

Agu also pointed out that the popularity of the decision was underscored by the fact that not only had it been greeted with wide applause in Enugu North but that it had already been endorsed by both the Enugu East and Enugu West senatorial zones.

  • Eze: I’m not quarrelling with Chime

Eze: I’m not quarrelling with Chime

An aspirant for Enugu State governorship seat in next year’s election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Ayogu Eze, has said there is no rift between him and Governor Sullivan Chime.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, the senator described Chime as his old friend.

He debunked insinuations that his rejection of a consensus candidate on the state as PDP’s choice might have created a gap between him and the governor.

Eze said he had been “very close to Chime for nearly 15 years”.

The senator dismissed insinuations in some quarters that the relationship between them was strained because of the political developments in that state.

According to him, his disagreement with the governor was only on the principle and procedure for choosing the PDP candidate for next year’s election.

Eze stressed that he held the governor “in very high esteem, as always”.

The senator was confident that “the governor will realise that those pushing him to take some of the steps he is taking now do not mean well for him and the state”.

He likened the political developments in Enugu State to the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election, which nearly undermined the achievements of the Ibrahim Babangida military government.

Eze noted that it was necessary for the process to be returned to track so that the PDP could unite for the elections.

Also, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu North Senatorial District has denied the allegation by Senator Ayogu Eze that some party members planned to use thugs to demonstrate against him for opposing the endorsement of Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as its consensus candidate.

The party described the allegation as unfounded and mischievous.

In a statement by its Chairman Mike Ejinima, the party wondered why Eze had become desperate by whipping up sentiments over the matter.

Eze, who is one of the governorship aspirants from Enugu North Senatorial District, where the state PDP zoned the governorship slot to, pointed fingers at some unnamed politicians for allegedly planning to hire thugs to demonstrate against him for opposing the consensus arrangement.

In a statement on Wednesday, his campaign organisation alleged that the planned use of thugs was aimed at denying him the chance to participate in the party’s primary.

But PDP’s Zonal Chairman Ejinima said: “The party, by its unanimous endorsement of Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi as the consensus candidate for the governorship position, has not closed its doors against any aspirant who has a contrary position to the party’s decision on the matter to participate in the governorship primary election.”

The chairman said the party would “welcome Senator Eze to the primary to test his strength, if he insists on contesting against the popular choice of the party”.

But he reminded the senator “of the grave consequences of his actions and inactions against the interest of the party”.

Ejinima admitted that he was aware of a proposal by the party’s youths from the six local government areas in the zone that they planned to organise a solidarity rally on the emergence of Ugwuanyi as the consensus governorship candidate.

The chairman noted that such a grassroots movement was in consonant with the norms of any political organisation worldwide.

He wondered why Eze was “blackmailing” the party by his allegation.

Ejinima urged Eze and his team to abide by the party’s decision and desist from acts that could undermine the PDP or heat up the polity.

He added that this was superior to any other decision.

  • Understanding Sullivan Chime

What really does the man want? Beyond his dream, God has blessed him. By the time he was invited to the political arena by his erstwhile friend, Dr. Chimaroke Nnamani, Chime could not have imagined an opportunity to serve in the public square. He was a lawyer quietly plying his trade in Enugu. It was a modest practice by all standards and perhaps he never imagined that he could make the mark to win and don the silk. He never did before his childhood friend Chimaroke Nnamani, called him up to serve as a Special Adviser to the governor. The former governor reposed true trust in his friend who had earlier been vested with managing his estate.

From a Special Adviser, having found favour with Nnamani, Chime was elevated to the distinguished position of the state Attorney General. In that position, he was the official Leader of the Bar in the state- a state that boasts many senior advocates and successful lawyers. Even at that point, it appeared he had come to the end of his public service career. He was not a politician and knew the only path leading up from that point was partisan politics. He lacked the means and clout to pull it through. But, against wiser counsel, Nnamani sacrificed the good standing of people like Uche Ekweremadu for subjective considerations.

His teeth sharpened, the first person attacked by the imposed governor-elect was his benefactor. He ferociously went after Nnamani- tore at his thigh, made for the throat, leaving no one in doubt about his mission. At that point, as a distant observer, I started having reservations about the governor. After assuming office, many of my friends from Enugu have insisted that Chime is the best performing governor they have had; that is when performance is narrowed to provision of infrastructure. What about character? In assessing the worth of a man, I would rather rate the grace of his spirit above outward appearance.

It did not take long for us to see the Enugu State governor in full flight. That he took ill a couple of times could not be blamed on him. Anyone could. However, the secrecy he adopted in managing the information and the not-too-tidy manner of ensuring the state was managed at the time showed a governor could also be venomous. He indicated, through his action, that he thought little of Sunday Onyebuchi as his deputy and would always prefer to see the state as a private estate or a Sole Proprietorship.

Those who had seen his predecessor as a tyrant now know that there is little difference between a tyrant and a despot. All through, Onyebuchi thought his time would come. He believed that if Nnamani could make the way for Chime on account of perceived loyalty, the governor could not do so much violence to total allegiance. Onyebuchi has been proved wrong.

Then came the story that the governor had been treating the young lady he pulled into the Government House as successor to his wife as foot mat. Again, as a man of good breed, Onyebuchi made no efforts to profit from the crisis as many would. The fact was lost on Chime who felt Onyebuchi had had enough, having risen to the number two position.

Decoding his boss’s body language, the deputy governor neither insisted on moving up the ladder as successor-in-title, nor staying to support the next governor. He would rather move sideways by seeking to grope his way to the Senate. It is a legitimate quest. The governor, too, assessing his political structure, has the right to back whomsoever he chooses. However, to go beyond throwing his weight behind a particular candidate and level childish charges against the deputy governor is reprehensible.

Chime’s allegation that Onyebuchi committed gross misconduct by setting up a poultry on the Government House Ground is the worst example of a vicious leader (or dealer). Framers of the constitution made impeachment the stiffest form of punishment for holders of the highest executive offices in the land because it was assumed that only decent people would ever occupy the offices of the Chief Executive, lawmakers and Chief Judges. The three institutions were brought into play to shut out conspiracy and indecent plots in performing that function.

Despite the safety valve, Onyebuchi has been impeached. Chime and his cohorts have done violence to the spirit of the constitution. Chime has misused and abused his office in ensuring that a young man’s loyalty and industry has been rewarded with political assault, if not murder. As Onyebuchi has indicated, he should go to the courts to explore the possibility of obtaining justice. He deserves to find out if there are still a few decent men on the Bench who do not consider running poultry a punishable offence. To Chime, I can only say, whatever a man sows, he shall surely reap some day.

  • Chime’s political legacy

As Nigeria gets close to another general election in 2015, a number of the final-term political office holders are beginning to worry about legacy. For those of them who live the lie that a legacy can be concocted by propaganda and subterfuge, you hear them parroting such things as ‘His Excellencies legacy projects’, when they are referring to mundane things like a monthly stipend paid out to a few political thugs in the name of youth employment program. Those who have been serving themselves and their cronies instead of those that elected them are hoping to hoodwink posterity, that they also left legacies.

But regardless of the shenanigans of the officials, they must note that legacies are the enduring projects and initiatives that are handed over to future generations. A legacy can be positive or negative. It can also be tangible or intangible. Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu state has a number of enduring physical projects that can appropriately be classified as legacy projects. The new state secretariat complex is unarguably one of them. But what of the intangibles like political legacy. My colleague on the Editorial Board of this paper, Mobolaji Sanusi, in his column last Friday took a snap from his podium on the political legacy of Barrister Sullivan Chime, over the ill-mannered decision to sponsor the impeachment of the deputy governor of the state, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, ‘for keeping poultry in government house among other puerile allegations’.

Hear Sanusi’s well considered advice to Governor Sullivan Chime, ‘His imperial Majesty Chime must watch his back for there is something called the law of Karma. It is inescapable. His predecessor, Chimaroke Nnamani, fought his godfather and benefactor, Jim Nwobodo. Chime has repaid Nnamani with an overdose of tyranny and treachery. He should not think that he has immunity against being paid back in his own coin. If he likes, let him pick his own biological son as successor’. Sanusi went on an on with historical anecdotes, in the hope that Governor Sullivan would halt his local version of President Goodluck Jonathan’s nationally orchestrated political impeachments, in some states controlled by the opposition, All Progressive Congress (APC).

I commend Sanusi’ counsel to Governor Chime, hoping he is not too far gone in his magisterial imperialism as not to give a hoot, like that fly feasting on a corpse, not realizing that the coffin would soon close in on it, for mutual burial. Just like Chime’s secretariat stands out among his physical legacy, his determination to champion the impeachment of Sunday Onyebuchi, for unjust cause, will stand out as his major political legacy. To make the matter worse for the Governor, the reasons for the impeachment is as puerile as it can ever be. But the shame for accepting those silly reasons belongs to the rag-tag members of the state house of assembly, who by their own choice are not better than the houseboys and housemaids of the executive arm of the state government.

The Governor’s own shame is that he is doing the young man in, to create an opportunity for his Chief of Staff, Mrs Ifeoma Nwobodo to have an un-impeded access to run for the Enugu-west senatorial election, on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in 2015. Just as I had argued on this page in February, when the Governor started this journey to politically strangulate his deputy, all the political actors who are suffering humiliation in the hands of the state governor, should move over to APC. The victims of Governor Chime’s political legacy as I argued in that piece are many, considering that he had ordered that all two-term office holders, including the deputy senate president, Ike Ekweremadu, should prepare for retirement.

The Governor’s present undemocratic maneuvers against his deputy, is one of the similar reasons why this column canvassed for the emergence of two nationally strong parties, so that when temporal political office holders or party henchmen turn to imperial majesties, there will be the opportunity to help them realize that empires are anachronistic and anathema to democracies, however inefficient our democracy may be. So if Governor Chime is determined to keep the PDP for himself and his cronies; those who are aggrieved should be bold enough to jump ship, and move over to the APC.

As I have also previously complained on this page, Governor Chime’s other political legacy, is the imposition of local government chairmen across the states. Since his ascendency, well just like his colleagues, what passed off as party primaries where charades. So the context was to get his nod for the party’s ticket, while the state electoral commission complete the hatchet job, by ensuring that the ruling party ‘wins’ all the positions that are contested. The result is that most of the ‘locally elected officials’ are not prepared for the offices they occupy. The trickle down effect is that most local government officials come and go without any impact, not to talk of any legacy.

Unfortunately, political office is like alcohol. The more you abuse it, the more you are hooked-on to the substance. The chance is that Governor Chime will see all the advice against substance abuse, as the idle talks of the uninitiated. In his state of intoxication, he will believe that he can not suffer the faith of his predecessors in office, particularly former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani, who was defeated by ‘a neophyte’ in the senatorial election, despite the concentration of his legacies as Governor, in that senatorial zone. A final word of advice for my state Governor; he should allow the opposition APC, to flourish, as that may be the platform for him when the man he will install as Governor, settles down to politically deal with him, in accordance with tradition.

  • Chime’s Chief of Staff and the opposition

Chime’s Chief of Staff and the opposition

Since 2007 when Governor Sullivan Chime assumed duty as the governor of Enugu State, the level of transformation has been unprecedented. This is despite the state receiving meager amount as allocation from the Federation Account; Chime has been shrewd in utilising the much he gets to provide benefits of democracy to the people.

In terms of road network, Enugu ranks among the states with the best road network in Nigeria. In the area of crime-free society which has eluded the state for almost a decade now, Chime has done a lot in tackling crime wave in the state.

Hardly does one walk more than 200 meters without meeting a flashy police car stationed in the vicinity. He supplied the police with many patrol vans with a view to ensuring that Enugu residents go about their businesses unmolested.

The endemic water problem in Enugu became a thing of the past. In front every house, there is a water pump installed as it used to be in the 60s and 70s. Schools have been renovated and the over 400 secondary schools in the state were given a bus each.

These are just few among the numerous democracy dividends achieved by the Chime administration. But the governor’s achievement is attributed to his choice of his Chief of Staff, Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo, a Chartered Accountant. The governor once said of her amid the flurry of attacks on her: “I have no regrets appointing her. If I am given another opportunity, I will appoint her a hundred times over.”

The prudent spending of the state’s resources guided by Mrs. Nwobodo made the governor to have absolute trust in her and would not take any final decision on an issue without considering her input.

Her refusal for the government to open the state treasury for political hawks to loot became a source of worry to many people. And for her stance, she had incurred the wrath of politicians, especially the opposition. The opposition and those not “favoured” by the government hold Mrs. Nwobodo responsible for their misfortunes. She is always blamed for any “wrongful” or “distasteful” position taken by the government.

She is even being blamed for the current travails of the embattled Deputy Governor, Sunday Onyebuchi who is facing accusations of wrong doing that could lead to his removal by the state House of Assembly.

They speculate that the Deputy Governor is being put on trial to make way for Nwobodo to become the Deputy Governor in order to have immunity to contest the senatorial seat of Enugu East. They alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is after her for financial crimes. But sources say the EFCC has not gone after her now that she has no immunity.

However, enquiries at the EFCC, Enugu office showed no evidence of such allegation. She was even accused of being responsible for the governor giving the governorship slot to Enugu North Senatorial zone which was announced by the governor last year.

As the general elections draws closer, those in the National Assembly who are afraid that they might lose the ticket for re-election also blamed their woes on Mrs. Nwobodo.

For having performed creditably as the Chief of Staff and for having uplifted so many people from her zone, the Enugu East Senatorial zone, the elders, professionals, intellectuals and who is who from the zone unanimously adopted her as their representative in the Senate come 2015.

Before this development, there was a policy by the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that all those in the National Assembly who have served up to two terms would not get another dropped to enable them to make way for others.

All of them, including the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu who is in his third tenure, were affected by this policy.

“The policy was introduced to pave way for Ifeoma Nwobodo to replace Gilbert Nnaji as the Senator representing Enugu East,” an aide to Nnaji alleged. But one thing that goes in her favour is the goodwill being showered on her by people of Nkanu.

Recently, an advertorial in a national newspaper which was signed by “Save Enugu Movement” castigated the Chief of Staff, accusing her of being responsible for the removal of the former chairman of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board (ESUBEB), Mrs. Ethel Nebo-Ezeabasili.

That advertorial was, however, consigned to the “dustbin” as one of the aides of the Chief of Staff put it “the faceless writers are at it again. If they know what they are alleging is true, let them come out and be identified. Afterall, this is democracy. There is no group known as Save Enugu Movement. There is Save Enugu Group; that we can identify.”

Nonetheless, an activist and national coordinator of a group known as Southeast Revival Group (SERG), Igwe Willy Ezeugwu said he was out to defend the Chief of Staff because “if allowed to continue, these faceless writers would give the impression that Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo is a tyrant and corrupt person.

“The attention of the Southeast Revival Group (SERG) has been drawn to a rambling, badly written and illogical hatchet job by faceless hired guns that go by the name “Save Enugu Movement” on page 11 of the Daily Sun edition of Tuesday, July 15, 2014 in which they attacked the person and office of Mrs. Ifeoma Nwobodo, the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Enugu State, and indirectly maligned the hard working and ever-performing Governor Sullivan Chime. Ordinarily, we of the Southeast Revival Group (SERG) wouldn’t have dignified this piece of junk writing with a modicum of response except that if such garbage piece of fiction is not replied, the reading public will swallow their lies, falsehood and meaningless diatribe hook, line and sinker,” the activist said.

Making reference to the SUBEB issue raised in the advertorial, Ezeugwu said: “For the avoidance of doubt, and for the interest of the reading public, the matter that the so- called “Save Enugu Movement” labored in vain to promote to the status of a current issue has been thoroughly investigated by both the Nigeria police force and the EFCC and the verdict of these two institutions are clearly well known to the parties involved. The matter under reference is a long settled case at the level of criminal investigation; what is baffling is that rather than avail oneself of the services of the courts and the nation’s judicial system if the matter means such and as the constitution provides, someone (and several unseen hands) are using the pages of a newspaper for mock trial. This latest attempt to pull wool over the eyes of the people has already failed.

“Let me point this out; the issue of SUBEB is a red herring, a decoy by a few failed politicians from Enugu State to sow the seed of discord among the people and distract the Governor and his able team from completing the laudable state-round renovation projects they embarked upon since 2007.

“The governor’s achievements are as sterling and glaring as to blind these failed politicians into thinking clearly and correctly. These failed politicians know who they are, not minding their rigorous newspaper propaganda and ever growing list of fictitious names deployed to achieve their nefarious ends.”

Blaming the advertorial on Enugu politicians at the National Assembly he said: “Let the truth be told, plainly and simply, there is no group, entity or individual called ‘Save Enugu movement’. The piece of garbage put out in that name is the handiwork of a few Enugu State politicians who are (1) opposed to the governorship of the state rotating to Enugu North [Nsukka Senatorial Zone] in 2015 and (2) who are opposed to the collective decision of Enugu State stakeholders that those who have served in the Senate and the House of Representatives for three terms (2003-2015) should make way for a new set of representatives to serve their people.

“To fish out the faceless characters behind this campaign of calumny against Governor Chime and his team is to identify, in utterances and deeds, the politicians who want to sit tight in the Senate and the House of Representatives as their permanent life ambition; indeed, as their birthright.

“Let me sound a note of warning, Enugu State is our collective inheritance under the leadership of Governor Sullivan Chime. Enugu State political destiny will be decided by the collective will of people of Enugu State, and not by the whims and caprices of those who want to remain Senators for life and who, without any shadow of doubt, sponsored the drivel I am currently rebutting.

“One million faceless advertisements will not change this situation. After their Abuja political grandstanding and throwing of untested weight around, we await them at home, and we will defeat and disgrace them.”

Over the months, with the approach of the conduct of party primaries slated for October this year by the Independent National Electoral Commission, there seems, unfortunately, concerted efforts by surrogates falling over themselves to please the Enugu State Government, by mounting ceaseless campaigns of calumny, against the person of Senator Ike Ekweremadu, through fictitious Advertorials.

Churning out falsehood, these groups and their collaborators are carrying it to a dizzying height which bewilders. There must be truce now and all those fanning the embers of chauvinism and trying to heat up the polity of a hitherto peaceful Enugu State, must be called to order.

Any keen follower of the political events in the Coal City, ought to have deduced that the out-going Governor Sullivan Chime is believed to be eyeing the Enugu West Senatorial seat being occupied at present by Senator Ekweremadu, who has performed creditably well not only as Senator representing the area, but has with candour, simplicity, courage and non pugnacious stance , steered honourably the Senate sessions of the 7th National Assembly, as Deputy Senate President.

His colleagues are won’t to marvel at his proper grasp of legislative duties, his articulate views and how he marshals his points with such ease not incurring the wrath of any Senator even those holding alternate views. It is to his credit that he continues to pilot the affairs of the Red Chamber with such dexterity each time he is presiding that hardly had there been any rancourous situation.

His warmth are infectious hence having friends that cut across party affiliations and he is at home with all his  colleague Senators at first name basis.

The pride of any nation and state, is to treasure and hold dearly their best ‘first eleven’ so to say. He remains a phenomenon in the Senate and National Assembly as a whole and the Economic Community for West African States (ECOWAS) Parliamentary Body, to therefore contemplate asking Senator Ekweremadu not to rerun, come February 2015 General Elections, is not only a disservice to Enugu State but indeed Nigerians.

To coerce and torpedo this achiever despite his phenomenal legislative  accomplishments in both fashioning good laws for the nation and attracting several developmental projects to his Constituency and empowering lots of people across board, no doubt goes against the grains of continuity and institutionalising functional senatorial duties as a bedrock of sound democratic tenets.

No one throws away a baby and the bathwater. There is no wisdom in changing a winning team. One matures with time and experience cannot be bought with money. United Sates of America, where we adopted the Presidential System of Government, never risked removing or uprooting a deserving and performing Senator. As a matter of fact, a peep into the history of serving American Senators, there is a long list of revered longest serving senators, who are still serving.

The list runs thus: Senators Robert C.Byrd (Democrat Western Virginia)-  was in the Senate for 51 years from January 3, 1959- January 28, 2010; Dan K. Inouye from January 3, 1963 to present day over 50 years; Storm Thurmond, Republican South Carolina, spent 47 years from November 7 1956- January 2002; Edward M. Kennedy Democrat Massachusetts ,had 47 years of meritorious service November 7, 1962 – August 25, 2009. As champion of higher education, direct loans to students and a lifelong crusader of equal rights, Senator Kennedy perhaps would have still been in the Senate, but for his unfortunate demise as a result of brain tumour.

Carl T.Hayden Democrat Arizona spent about 42 years March 4, 1927- January 3, 1969; John Stemis Democrat Mississippi, did 42 years November 5, 1947- January 1989; Ted Steven Republican Arkansas, was at the senate for 44 years Dec 24, 1965- January 2009; Ernest F Hollings Democrat spent 39 years Nov 9, 1966- January 3, 2005; Richard D. Russel Democrat  was at that distinguished American senate for 38 years January 3, 1933- January 21, 1971. Bringing to a close the list of 10 longest serving American senators is Russel Long Democrat Los Angeles, was in the senate for 38 years December 31, 1948- January 3, 1987.

The issue of who represents the Constituents in the American system, is not based on sentiments or emotions but the system works for perfection. It is not at the whims and caprices of President Barack Obama, or any American serving Governor. They hold on tenaciously to their men of honour and valour as they go into elections.

It is becoming a past time for most Governors leaving governance to go headlong in pursuit of uprooting whoever is in the senate so that they may replace them. It shouldn’t really be a dumping ground for past Governors, especially when the incumbent senators are remarkably doing well in all ramifications. There could be other areas these former Governors could participate instead of upturning the apple cart.

The scenario in Enugu makes a good case for study. Although the Governor has not publicly declared he would be contesting the seat occupied by Senator Ekweremadu, but even in my village in Enugu State, it is no longer a news hidden in a bushel. Objectively, both sons of Enugu have done well and are equally qualified to run. The Governor has laid solid foundation for development in the state with the construction of major roads within the capital city and also at the rural areas. He had restored a serene and peaceful atmosphere for business and social life to thrive.

On his part, Senator Ekweremadu’s status has soared with local and an international clout. He is a consummate legislator whose master of legislative process to the advantage of the nation we cannot afford to toy with and miss. He has postulated and sponsored several bills that impact on the common man, promoting legislation that would provide support systems for small and medium scale enterprises, especially reviewing laws that could encourage local technology, local management skills and access to cheap and long term loans.

He had worked tirelessly in getting through legislation that would make for funding for a limited free health care system especially for expectant mothers, children and all those unable to benefit in the health insurance scheme, amongst others. His horizon is people-oriented, hence the infrastructural provision for his Enugu West Constituents so staggering in new school blocks, desks, books, equipping libraries, transformers, rural electrification, water boreholes, roads , building of town halls and places of recreation, adult literacy and micro finance.

He has a Football Championship on-going being competed for by Local Governments that make up his Senatorial Zone. Perhaps it is in the area of philanthropic gestures that Senator Ekweramadu has written his name in Platinum. As at the last count, his Ikeoha Foundation Scholarship Bursary Award is sponsoring the education of over 300 students including bursary awards in higher institutions including universities both at home and overseas.

No tinkering of the Constitution would be complete without mentioning his name since as Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee in the National Assembly, he has brought to bear on the exercise, respectability and a high sense of purpose.

Given his pedigree and purposeful leadership as Deputy Senate President and for the magnificent upliftment  and empowerment of people from his area, one can say without any fear of contradiction that his name placed on the Ritchard’s Scale, it would weigh down the gold bars.

Is it therefore desirable that he should return, Yes. Would he add more values and strengthen the Senate in the forthcoming 8th National Assembly? The answers are in the positive. Will the people of Enugu West be better of with his coming back? Yes and Yes!

We must grow this democracy and appreciate excellence and performance. We must not abort a dream so sweet still in the honey comb. All men and women of decent upbringing in Enugu, must intervene to checkmate the unnecessary flexing of muscles.

The party in Enugu is One Big Family. We must shut the door to muckrakers and mischief makers cum sycophants. Howbeit Senator Ike Ekweremadu and Governor Sullivan locking themselves up in one room, no interference and as brothers sort out what ordinarily should be a simple family affair.
