    Chime tackles water scarcity

There is a good road network in the state, but that is not all the Sullivan Chime administration has done. One other giant stride in the state is the provision of water.

The problem of water supply to Enugu metropolis was old as the city itself. Sources of water abound in the state. But the problem has been distribution. There are the World Bank assisted water project at Oji-River and the Ajalli water reservoir. But the question is distribution.

The water pipes laid by the colonial masters in the 1920s have all rusted and weakened. Successive administrations were not interested in replacing them. And every now and then the old pipes burst. And this constituted a herculean task for the workers at the water corporation. Instead of replacing the pipes, they rather patched them up, and the water problem persisted.

Governor Chime came with a different view. To him water is unarguably one of the most important basic needs of man. All through history, the success or otherwise of governments in all climes have been measured and predicated on how well they have been able to provide basic needs of the people more especially water.

Before the advent of  his administration, water supply in Enugu State was the worst problem long declared to be intractable by preceding administrations.

But that era has since become history with the breakthroughs recorded by the Chime administration in the areas of regular water generation and distribution in both the urban and rural areas of the state.

The most significant and conspicuous of these achievements however, is the government’s successes in the area of urban water supply more especially with the restoration of public taps that were last seen in Enugu more than three decades ago.

Needless to say that Enugu residents and visitors alike, have welcomed this development with such jubilation and excitement that they have promptly nicknamed the taps Mmiri Sullivan (Sullivan’s Water).

The government had started this remarkable process of restoration with the complete removal of old steel and asbestos pipes in the urban areas – some of them which dated as far back as 1929- and replacing them with the safer and more durable PVC pipes. This not only helped to broaden the water supply channels and networks but ensured that it reached all nooks and crannies of the cities.

Regular supply of potable water has since ceased to be the exclusive perquisite of the rich living in the high-brow areas of the coal city. Residents of such less regarded areas of Obiagu, Abakpa, Achara Layout, Idaw River and Emene are now happy and proud beneficiaries of the taps that sit sedately in front of their respective houses.

Gone are the long treks to water boreholes or wells as well as the queues and the frequent fights that Enugu residents have endured all these years. It is of record that a full of generation of Enugu residents especially those in the low profile habitats never had the opportunity available today to enjoy this all important social service.

It is not yet uhuru though as the service is yet to get to all the areas but the affected residents are confident that with the enormity and the pace of work still being done by the state Water Corporation on the project, it would be a matter of time before the service reach their quarters.

A petty trader at Enugu’s slum area, Obiagu said that if anyone had told her that she would ever see a tap running freely in front of her  ‘face me I face you’ residence in her lifetime, she would laughed the fellow away. “I grew up to believe that tap water was for the rich people living in GRA (Government Reserved Area and such places. I have lived here for twenty five years and I never saw any running tap until now”, she said.

Another citizen, residing in a part of  Gariki, said that even though the service was still to reach his residence, he was optimistic that it would soon get there given the administration’s track record in keeping its promises to the people.

He said, “In Sullivan Chime, we have seen a governor who has always kept his promises, who has always completed his projects, even though our own tap is yet to be activated, we know and we see that work is going on and we are confident that in no time at all, we will join our fellow residents to enjoy this wonderful present”

Indeed, on inception, the administration set out to increase the state’s water supply capacity from under 20,000 cubic meters to 77,000 cubic metres. That objective has all but been realised.

The issue of water supply has even been tackled with greater zeal and vigour in the rural areas of the state. The Enugu State Rural Water Supply and sanitation Agency (EN-RUWASSA), is the agency charged with the responsibility of providing safe drinking water to the rural communities.

Records show that it has so far lived up to its billings under the Chime administration which has the provision of potable water and environmental sanitation as a cardinal component of its widely acclaimed 4-point agenda.

The governor’s major land marks in the provision of potable water supply in the rural areas include:

Construction of eight motorised boreholes in Nsukka, Igboeze-South, Ezeagu, Oji-River and Uzo-Uwani Local Government Areas, as well as N36 Million for 42 shallow boreholes in Aninri, Agwu, Nkanu East, Nkanu West, Isi-Uzo and Enugu South Local Government Area, Ogui-Agu Eke in Udi, Amankwo-Oghe in Ezeagu and Nimbo in Uzo-Uwani Councils.

With the support from some Local Government Councils, the Enugu State  Government also rehabilitated water schemes at Umuaga and Obinagu (Udi), Ede Oballa (Nsukka), Amuri and Ojiagu Agbani (Nkanu West) while Government is doing work on the water schemes of Edem, Obukpa in Nsukka Local Government Area and in Ugbawka, Amechi Idodo and Owo in Nkanu East Local Government Area.

Rehabilitation of University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) water scheme which  includes the construction of four new boreholes, new water reservoir and water.  reticulation on the campus at the cost of N329 million were also completed by the administration Governor Chime

Construction work has also started on the over N2.5billion  Adada River  Dam project in Igbo-Etiti and Uzo-Uwani Local Council of the State to boost water  supply in Enugu North Area of the State.

  • Abandoned road finally catches Chime’s eye

Abandoned road finally catches Chime’s eye

After what seemed like eternity, a long-abandoned road in an Enugu State community has caught the eye of Governor Sullivan Chime, much to the joy of the residents.

The excitement of the people of Akpugoeze clan made up of Akpugo-eze Ugwu, Akpugo eze Agbada and other Akpugo eze communities in Oji River Local Government of the state knew no bounds when construction work started commenced on the 14 km of road, which links Anambra State.

Chime had driven on the road on a visit to Akpugo Eze and was shocked by the extent of its disrepair. Promptly, he conceded that the people of the area actually needed a good access road. He made them a promise: the road would be fixed, quickly.

Many of the people dismissed the promise as one of those political gimmicks by politicians, more so as the governor’s fiercest opponents hail from the area. And so, it was a surprise to them, as if it was a dream, when the project was handed over to a foreign firm named Atidolf Company Nigeria Ltd for execution.

On the occasion, Governor Sullivan Chime represented by the Commissioner for Works and infrastructure, Mr. Godwin O. Madueke stressed that the government would not relent in its efforts to meet the expectations of the people.

He stated that Enugu State government was determined to link all the Local Government Areas and food producing communities in the state to enhance food production and economic activities.

Madueke revealed that the total cost of the project is N1.45 billion, out of which the state government would expend 70 per cent and Oji River Local Government would contribute 30 per cent.

The commissioner explained that the 14.1km road project starting from Nkwo Inyi market to Akpugo eze ugwu to Akpugo Agbada to neighbouring Anambra State would be completed within one dry year.

The Chairman of Oji River Local Government Area Mr. Jideofor Onyemachi commended the state government for initiating the project and gave an assurance that the people of the area would provide good working atmosphere for the contractors handling the project.

Chief Gbazuagu Nweke Gbazuagu, a one time governorship candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP) during general Ibrahim Babangida still born transition programme thanked God that the project was being executed in his life time.

The President of Akpugo eze clan Mr. Bosa Onwurah expressed gratitude to God Almighty and Governor Chime, saying that it will promote economic and social life of the people.

The consultant of the project Mr. Greg Nnaji of Project Design Consultant said that he has done due diligence on the design and all necessary pre contract documents concerning the project and it was accepted by Ministry of Works and Infrastructure.

He assured the state government of proper monitoring of the project, and will be ready to give solution to any technical issue concerning the design of the project.

The Managing Director of Atidolf Nigeria Limited, Mr. Rudolf Mawad promised to complete the work on schedule and work according to standard specified on the design.

  • Chime and politics of forced endorsement

Chime and politics of forced endorsement

Whose who understand power within the context of democracy know, as Chinua Achebe pens in one of his classics, the “Arrow of God”, that their power is “no more than the power of a child over a goat that was said to be his”. On the day the goat is killed or sold, it would know the rightful owner. That power belongs to the people.

In the novel, Ezeulu is the chief priest of Ulu, the deity of Umuaro. Although he knows that he is “merely a watchman” for the gods, he is obsessed with the immensity of his powers over the lunar year and crop, hence the people. Describing Ezeulu, his main antagonist, Nwaka, says: “A man who carries a deity is not a king. He is there to perform its ritual and to carry sacrifice to it. But …Ezeulu… wants to be king, priest, diviner, all.”

Ezeulu is also a character of pathos. Those whom the gods want to kill, they first make mad. Thus, looking at the chain of events surrounding this tragic hero, I sometimes wonder if the gods themselves did not deliberately goad their chief priest to destruction, perhaps to punish him and/or teach mortals some lessons in the vanity of power.

Yet, whichever it is, the storyline of Umuaro and Ezeulu playing out in Enugu politics ahead of the 2015 general election does not show that mortals have learnt a thing. The forced endorsements and political impunity being perpetrated by the Governor of Enugu State, Sullivan Chime, and his kitchen cabinet is just like an Ezeulu testing his powers against the will of the people, and perhaps the gods.

Let us rewind to 2013. Governor Chime overreached himself when he decreed that all federal lawmakers from Enugu State doing second tenure and upwards must retire in 2015. This naturally drew public ire as it was generally considered unconstitutional, arrogant, dictatorial, and illogical. Illogical in the sense that Chime, who is completing the maximum two terms as governor, would have certainly gone for a third, and even more terms had the constitution permitted. But he does not see the need for himself to retire. Instead, he wants them swept away to create space for himself and his cronies to retire to the NASS. This is unjust, selfish, and grossly undemocratic.

Consequently, to assert himself, just like Ezeulu, Chime, working in consonance with Engr. Vita Abba, the State Chairman of the PDP in Enugu, who himself has a governorship ambition, has literally brought the Enugu PDP and the state in general under unnecessary tension through his endorsement project. Worse still, they go about it childishly because rather than give Chime any edge, the gale of compelled and fraudulent endorsements expose him as jittery, insecure, unloved, and lacking in true followership. Otherwise, why would a sitting governor be so panicky about his senatorial ambition as to be literarily chasing local council chairmen and party executives about and threatening them to endorse him and his chief of staff?

This has also come with a lot of impunities. For visiting former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani and Chime’s godfather who recently rejoined the PDP, several ward chairmen and executives were suspended because the governor’s Chief of Staff, Ifeoma Nwobodo, is running for the senatorial seat, which Nnamani is also eyeing. For reasoning against the hasty endorsements, for resisting the attempt to force PDP chairmen in the five LGAs of Enugu West Senatorial District to sign a document purportedly zoning the senatorial seat from Greater Awgu (Chief Ekweremadu’s area) to Udi/Ezeagu (Chime’s area), the party chairman in his native Udi LGA, Uchenna Ogbodo, has not been allowed to function. For advising against sponsoring a newspaper advertorial against Chief Ike Ekweremadu by the Awgu LGA chapter of the governor’s college of political sycophants, a Permanent Secretary in Enugu State, Barrister Eze O. Eze, was unceremoniously demoted to a Director. These so-called stakeholders are given money to place adverts announcing purported endorsements of Chime by LG party executives without even consulting the executives concerned. That was why courageous LG party executives have equally been issuing statements/advertorials denying the whole rubbish. And one hopes that the anti-graft agencies are noting government’s misappropriated spending on this charade.

Meanwhile, the future of our youths and health of our people are also put at risk as the state government has descended on the Ikeoha Foundation, Ekweremadu’s NGO. The Commissioner for Education, Prof. Chris Okoro, has ordered secondary school principals not to release their students to participate in the 2014 edition of Ikeoha Quiz Competition, which has promoted competitive learning for over a decade in the senatorial district. Winning schools – up to the second runner up – receive instructional and science equipment, while overall winning students who gain admission into higher institutions of learning have always received half a million naira each.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. George Eze, has also stopped the distribution of 20,000 units of anti-malarial drugs acquired by the Ikeoha Foundation to assist health centres in the area to fight the malaria scourge, the highest killer and bane of infants, nursing and pregnant mothers. All in the name of politics!

The question now is, after all the “yeye” endorsements, what next? Have Chime, Ifeoma Nwobodo and co become PDP flag bearers for the next election? Has that precluded those interested in the seats Chime and company are gunning for from contesting? Has that made them Senators? No. So, this overheating of the Enugu polity serves nothing except the awful showcasing of power drunkenness, foolery, and abundance of poor strategists and bad cooks in Chime’s kitchen cabinet.

Chime is undoubtedly the governor of Enugu State. But that does not confer on him the powers to expropriate the rights of the Enugu PDP faithful and Enugu people to elect leaders of their choice in a free and fair party primary and general election, respectively. The constitutional powers of the governor and the state party chairman are not more than that power which a child has over a goat said to be his. Their role is to ensure the welfare of the goat, not to sell or kill it.

This, Chime has failed to appreciate. He has neither lived humbly like a man whose palm kernels were cracked by benevolent spirits nor has he shown gratitude/respect to those the gods used to elevate him. Thus, when one considers his rising impunities and controversies, I sometimes wonder if the gods are not deliberately goading him on the path of self destruction – like Ezeulu. Otherwise, why should a governor be so excessive and reckless with power, arrogating unto himself powers over the destinies of men?

A man who stands against the voice of the people and will of the gods should observe the anus of the proud dog who tried to put off the furnace with his puny fart. Consider Ezeulu who eventually loses everything that is important to him – his family, his religion, his community (which abandons him), his favourite son (Obika), and ultimately, his sanity. The villagers have no sympathy for him because, to them, their god had taken sides with them against his headstrong and ambitious priest, thereby upholding the wisdom of their ancestors – that no man, however great, was greater than his people.

Chime signs industrial park MoU with Chinese firm

Enugu State Governor Sullivan Chime has said that his government has put in place adequate measures and infrastructure that has made the state more than ready to host investors from around the world.

The governor stated this during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the State Government and a Chinese Company, Goalmark Group for the establishment of a mega industrial park in Enugu.

He noted that the measures which, according to him, have already triggered an influx of both local and foreign investment into the state were to be sustained and strengthened.

He stated that due to the importance the government attached to the project, it has already provided a large expanse of land for the establishment of the Industrial Park and would also ensure that all necessary facilities were provided to ensure its successful take off.

“This project is dear to our hearts, we are full of expectations and we want to see GoalMark Group developing the place immediately. The land in question is immediately available and we are making sure that all necessary infrastructure including proper access road to the estate will be put in place”, he said.

Chime also noted that the Industrial Park will complement the massive infrastructural development of Enugu City that his administration had embarked on to give it a brand new and modern outlook.

The leader of the delegation from Goalmark Group which has its headquarters in Beijing, China, Mr Lin Feng said the company decided to go ahead with the project after a careful study that confirmed Enugu as a conducive place for it.

He disclosed that the project which, according to him, will cost billions of dollars to complete, will bring massive investments to Enugu from all over the world and ensure the tremendous improvement the economy of the state and environs.

He said that the park will comprise investments in such major areas as cement, coal, power and water treatment plants as well as cassava and rice processing concerns.

Feng added that the project will also entail the establishment of a specialised school for training of manpower to handle the various investments that the park will be attracting and called for continued support of the government to ensure that all of its objectives are met.

He expressed delight that the project has become a reality and commended the government for its commitment towards ensuring its successful take off.

But she denied having mental problem.

Mrs.Chime who has moved out of Government House said she is “now liberated” and thanked Nigerians for their support while her ordeal lasted.

She said: “He (Gov.Chime) accused me of so many things, like he told the whole world that I had mental problem;he told people that my friends are into diabolical stuff.

“I don’t know where he got that from. That is why I don’t know what to say about my husband.

“All I can tell him is that I wish him all the best in this life and the life to come because he is the father of my son.”

She said she was happy to regain her freedom.

“I’m just happy. I just couldn’t believe that one day I would be myself or be happy this way.

“I’ve gained a lot of weight. I’m going to get back to my normal size. It’s the drug that they gave me that caused this. The doctor in the UK told me that it was wrong medication because that is not what I’m suffering from.

Governor Sullivan Chime at an interactive session with newsmen in Enugu in November denied imprisoning her.

He said Clara “has some medical challenges and it would be very unkind of me to talk about her condition on the pages of newspapers.”

He added: “We’ve been battling her health challenges prior to my inauguration in 2011.It was so bad at a time that she had to be taken out of the Governor’s Lodge for treatment.”

  • Enugu 2015: Chime, Ekweremadu’s battle gets messier

Enugu 2015: Chime, Ekweremadu’s battle gets messier

The battle between Governor Sullivan Chime and Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, over the governorship seat of Enugu State in 2015 is getting out of hand, reports Associate Editor, Sam Egburonu

Before May 29, 2013, the disagreement between Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State and Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, over the ticket of the People’s Democratic Party ( PDP) for the next governorship election, was a well managed secret.

But on that day, in a town hall meeting held at Nike Lake Resort Hotel, Enugu, to mark this year’s Democracy Day, Chime let the cat out of the bag when he announced publicly that the people of Nsukka Zone would produce the next governor of the state in 2015. The zone, according to available records has seven out of the 17 local government areas in Enugu State. They are Igbo-Etiti, Igboeze North, Igboeze South, Nsukka, Isi-uzo, Udenu and Uzo-Uwani.

The governor had told the town hall meeting that the issue of zoning had remained an internal arrangement in PDP, and that for 2015, the party has zoned the governorship position to Nsukka zone, adding, “It is already being discussed at the caucus level of the party in the state…we work towards it, the issue of who becomes governor is in the hands of our people…There is an understanding that it goes to Nsukka…It is a PDP affair, all things being equal, our candidate will come from there, and whoever emerges the PDP candidate will be governor.”

Coming shortly after the well-publicised appearance of governorship posters of Ekweremadu in Nsukka zone and in Enugu capital city, observers said it was Chime’s blunt way of saying he would not allow Ekweremadu to succeed him as governor. Although Ekweremadu, before and after the appearance of the said posters, had repeatedly denied having the ambition of contesting the governorship seat in 2015, insiders insist he is working hard to realise the long held ambition and that Chime would not hear of it.

So, since Chime’s declaration at the town hall meeting, the disagreement between him and Ekweremadu over the governorship ticket has become a public issue. Both Chime and Ekweremadu hail from Enugu West Senatorial Zone, and so if Chime would make good his promise to Enugu North, it means the alleged governorship ambition of Ekweremadu in 2015 would be truncated.

    As close associates

At the return of democracy in 1999, Ekweremadu and Chime found themselves in a common political family, called Ebeano, which was headed by the then governor of Enugu State, Dr Chimaroke Nnamani. The two were, according to members, very close confidants of the governor and so became political associates themselves. While Chime began as Personal Adviser to Nnamani on Legal Matters and later became the Commissioner for Justice and Attorney-General of the State, Ekweremadu served as the Chief of Staff to the governor and was later appointed the Secretary of the State Government (SSG).

While the Ebeano political empire reigned, Chime and Ekweremadu worked harmoniously well. But in 2006, when it was time to anoint Nnamani’s successor, the first crack was noticed as Nnamani left the deputy governor, Ezenwata Okechukwu Itanyi and Ekweremadu, who some Ebeano members said were better positioned and more politically experienced and settled for Chime.

As Nnamani personally led the gubernatorial campaign train, and Chime’s declaration as winner of that election, there were reports that both Itanyi, Ekweremadu and some other better positioned people within Ebeano felt betrayed.

In the case of Ekweremadu, Nnamani had in 2003, drafted him to the Senate to replace Senator Collins Ndu, whose crime was his loyalty to Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, then PDP National Secretary.

So, the choice of Chime did not bring permanent crack in his relationship with Ekweremadu as the later soon became the Deputy President of the Senate.

The two, therefore, continued to work together as associates.

This claim may be sustained by the fact that they have fought many political battles together since then.

In 2010 for example, at the build up for the 2011 elections, when Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo emerged the National Chairman of PDP and dissolved the party’s state executive then led by Vita Abba, Ekweremadu and Chime joined forces to battle Nwodo. At the end of the encounter, Nwodo lost his plum seat at Wadata Plaza, while Chime and Ekweremadu returned to their seats at Enugu Government House and the Senate respectively.

It would be recalled also that the two allegedly turned their back on the Ebeano political family after the exit of Nnamani and were accused of overseeing the demise of the political empire.

“Although they benefitted more than any of us from Ebeano, together they destroyed the political structure just because of greed and ambition of establishing separate and personal power base. We know them to be associates in this respect, said a member of Ebeano family, who begged not to be named

    Genesis of the awry relationship

Our investigation confirms that the Chime and Ekweremadu’s face off over the PDP ticket for the 2015 governorship election can be traced to a comment allegedly made by Chime in a crucial stakeholders’ meeting in Enugu sometime in May, 2013. Our source confirmed that Chime had told the meeting that federal lawmakers from the state, who have served at least two terms should not be encouraged to go back but that they ought to give others chance to go and focus their attentions on new areas.

Given that only about three out of about 11 federal lawmakers at the said meeting would qualify if Chime’s theory was to be implemented, it led to hot exchange of words, as some lawmakers openly told the governor not to attempt lording it over any of them.

One lawmaker particularly accused Chime at the meeting of targeting Ekweremadu, who he alleged, the governor was plotting to replace with his younger bother.

The meeting ended in a very bad mood but insiders said Chime has not regretted making the statement as he actually believes some lawmakers have overstayed and must be replaced.

Since that meeting, the Enugu State political theatre had become more intriguing and it seems the governor is out to put down his foot. For example, during the primaries for the November 2, 2013 local government election in the state, Ekweremadu’s camp and that of other Abuja politicians from Enugu alleged that the governor shut them out of any arrangements. The result of the election suggest that most of them no longer have strong political base.

Another incident that confirmed that Chime and Ekweremadu had since parted ways and that what is left is he actual political contest was what transpired during the last South-East Zonal Executive Committee’s meeting of PDP. In that meeting, Chime was not present but the State delegates, according to an insider, were properly briefed by the governor to oppose the existing zoning formula, which will ensure the return of Olisa Metu as the National Publicity Secretary of PDP. Given that Ekweremadu was known to be in support of the return of Metu, he was said to have been embarrassed by the position of his state delegation. Although Enugu delegates’ position was defeated at the meeting, as Metu returned, the encounter confirmed that the political battle between these two allies had just began.

    The game is up!

Today, the battle for the PDP’s governorship ticket in Enugu State seems to have been narrowed to the face-off between Chime and Ekweremadu. Nobody is pretending about it anymore. Although Ekweremadu is yet to officially declare interest in the governorship position in 2015, his disagreement with Chime’s alleged zoning arrangement as been clearly articulated.

What is more, the battle ground has been expanded as sources said that Chime is not only bent on handing over to somebody from Enugu North but is now interested in replacing Ekweremadu as the senator representing Enugu South.

These new resolves have necessitated a lot of moves, consultations and restrategising from the two camps. While Ekweremadu has been inaugurating many projects and making wide consultations within and outside the senatorial zone, Chime has not been sleeping.

A recent advertorial, published on Sunday, December 1, 2013, and signed by Bethel Onyenyiri, a Special Adviser to Ekweremadu, said, “I have it on good authority that the governor (Sullivan Chime) held a clandestine meeting with some government functionaries in the state to not only initiate a campaign to discredit the Deputy President of the Senate (Ike Ekweremadu), but also to sabotage and possibly destroy the numerous projects attracted by the Deputy President of the Senate.

“We do not care about their pull-him-down campaign, for while you may fool the blind that there is no palm oil in the soup, you cannot fool him/ her as to whether or not there is salt in the soup.”

Reacting to the allegation, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Chime,

Mr. Chukwudi Achife, told The Nation on Friday that there was no face off between Chime and Ekweremadu. He however described the allegation that Chime was planning to destroy federal government projects in the state as laughable.

Asked if it was true that Chime has ordered the destruction of some federal projects in Enugu State, he said: “The allegation as contained in an advertorial published by Bethel Onyeyiri, Special Adviser on Projects to Ekweremadu is that the governor is planning to sabotage or destroy projects attracted by the Deputy Senate President and not that he has ordered it. We have said and I repeat that the allegation is fallacious and baseless as it is puerile and laughable. We have challenged them to mention the projects and show how a state government can destroy a federal project.”

He added: “There is no face-off between Governor Chime and Ekweremadu but we understand that some people are desperately trying to provoke one in pursuit of political ambitions. Enugu has been an epitome of peace since the advent of the Chime administration and it is not about to change no matter the antics of some people. We refuse to be dragged into any mindless and unnecessary war.”

Chime, estranged first wife may reconcile

GOVERNOR Sullivan Chime of Enugu State may soon reconcile with his first wife, Iffy, from whom he was estranged some years back. The governor’s second wife, Clara, recently left the Government House, Enugu, following the storm raised by her alleged confinement to the complex on the order of the governor, on grounds of illness. Iffy, who has four children – two boys and two girls – for the governor, had relocated abroad following their separation. She was recently sighted at her son’s newly completed building. She is a mass communication graduate. Sources in Enugu said yesterday that the departure of Clara from Government House may have provided an ample opportunity for Iffy to return to the embrace of the governor to become first lady .Governor Chime was in his early 20s when he married the then 17 year old Iffy. Both are from Udi near Enugu and share a similar aristocratic background. Chime’s father was a minister in the First Republic before becoming the traditional ruler of Udi town while Iffy’s father was a diplomat and aspired to succeed Chime’s father as traditional ruler after his demise. Said an elder from Udi: “We expect that the two “children” will come back as husband and wife. We know that it was youthful exuberance coupled with inexperience and immaturity that led to their separation.” Clara is currently staying with her mother in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. Government officials and family sources bluntly refused to discuss the issue. “This is a private family affair. Why not allow them sort themselves out as they want. It is not a matter for public consumption.”

Chime’s wife leaves for family house

The embattled wife of the Enugu State Governor, Mrs. Clara Chime, is now out of confinement at the Government House.

This is coming after four months of alleged “incarceration”.

Governor Sullivan Chime said she was confined on medical advice.

A source quoted Mrs. Chime as saying she was forced to remain as the governor’s wife.

Mrs. Chime was first allowed outside the Government House on Sunday, but she later returned to the Government House where she spent the night.

Sources said she had a family meeting with the extended members of her family.

The future and continuation of her marriage to Chime was extensively discussed.

The source said from all indications, the governor’s wife has lost interest in the marriage.

“She was persuaded to go back to the Government House on that Sunday night by family members as she was said to be reluctant going back.”

A source said she again returned to her family house yesterday and she was still there at press time.

Clara, who hails from Umuogele Amuda, Isuochi in Abia State, is Chime’s second wife.

The marriage was contracted in October 2008.

Mrs. Chime petitioned the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) alleging unlawful detention by her husband through Lagos lawyer Femi Falana.
