  • Cholera: 10 confirmed dead in Niger

    The Secretary of the Bida Local Government Area in Niger State, Suleiman Sheshi, confirmed on Monday that 10 persons have been confirmed dead in the cholera outbreak in the area.

    He said 60 cases have been reported at the Umaru Sanda General Hospital in Bida.

    Sheshi, who is also the Health Director at the LGA, said he had visited some health centers in the area and confirmed that the centers have patients with cholera.

    “Prompt action on our part will without save lives of patients who are presently critical points,” he stated.

     

  • Cholera outbreak hits Niger

    There is a serious outbreak of cholera in Eight local government areas in Niger state.

    The Nation gathered that community clinics and health centers are filled with people affected by the disease.

    However, no death have been recorded so far

    According to a Community Health Worker, Shehu Baba, the entire Niger South senatorial district which comprise of Bida, Agaie, Mokwa, Lapai, Kutigi, Lavun have been affected.

    He said that his community clinic which is in Doko in Lavun local government area is filled with patients with symptoms of cholera adding that some case have been confirmed while others are being checked, “for now, I cannot quantify the number but I can tell you is that it is the entire zone. The number of people with the symptoms is massive”, he said.

    A Source in Bida also disclosed that six cases have been confirmed at the Federal Medical Center (FMC), Bida but the management of the Center said there was a case of cholera and other cases which are confirmed not to be cholera.

    Meanwhile, the management of the facility said it is putting its record together and would disclose the actual fact later.

  • 19 new cholera cases reported in Adamawa

    The Adamawa State Ministry of Health has confirmed 19 new cases of cholera in Mubi North and Mubi South local government areas.

    A statement yesterday by the Information Officer in the ministry, Mr Mohammed Abubakar, said 16 of the new cases were recorded in Mubi South while three were reported in Mubi North.

    The statement said 1,227 cases were recorded in the past one month resulting in 20 deaths, while 19 patients were still on admission at the treatment centre in Mubi General Hospital as at June 10.

    It added that Hong Local Government Area had five cases without death; Maiha Local Government Area had three cases without death; Mubi North had 526 cases with 11 deaths and Mubi South had 693 cases with nine deaths.

  • Senate seeks increased tax on plastic bags, bottles

    The Senate has called for increased tax on the production of plastic bags and bottles as part of policy review to discourage the use of plastic bags and bottles in the country.

    The lawmakers cited environmental pollution and the accompanying outbreak of diseases like cholera, Lassa fever, malaria and others, the lawmakers as some of the issues.

    The resolution came through a motion prepared by Senator Oluremi Tinubu (APC, Lagos Central) but read on her behalf by Senator Rose Oko (PDP, Cross River North) at the plenary on Wednesday.

    The lawmakers observed that indiscriminate disposal of used plastic bags, bottles, straws and other plastic derivatives has been partly responsible for flooding in many parts of the country.

    The upper chamber also urged the Federal Government to increase funding for the environment and environmental issues, with the enactment and enforcement of legislation on adequate waste disposal and recycling system in the country.

    It also sought the participation of all the states in the creation and review of policies, with the view to shedding light on the nation’s environmental issues, as well as the introduction of eco-friendly refuse bags in the country.

    The lawmakers called on the Federal Ministry of Environment and relevant agencies to ensure sensitization, particularly of the younger population on environmental issues.

    Through the motion, the senators were informed that several countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and others have introduced measures like increase in tax payable on single use bags and plastics.

    Nine other African countries, including Kenya and Rwanda were also identified as some of the countries that have introduced a ban on production, sale and importation of plastic bags.

    In his remarks the President of the Senate, Dr. Bukola Saraki said the government still has a lot to do in ensuring that the environment remained safe and better for the health of the citizenry.

  • Cholera: Six Kaduna pupils still on admission

    Six pupils of the Government Girls Secondary School, Kawo, Kaduna State, are still on admission following the outbreak of cholera in the school, it was learnt yesterday.

    Commissioner for Health and Human Services Dr Paul Manya Dogo, who confirmed this, said, 57 others have been discharged

    He said: “I am just leaving the hospital where the children were taken to. The situation has been controlled and a lot of them already discharged.

    “Sixty-three of them were admitted at the facility but only six of them are left there, and the hospital management has assured us that they may be discharged today (yesterday).

    “Sadly, one of them died at a private hospital her parents took her to. That I think happened on Friday and it pained us.”

    Chief Medical Director of the General Hospital, Kawo, Dr Oyelami Akintunde said the pupils were responding to treatment and many of them have been discharged.

    He said: “They brought 42 pupils on Monday morning and another 15 later at night. Another six were brought six on Tuesday morning, totalling 63. Many of them have recovered and have been discharged and the remaining six will be discharged today (yesterday).”

    One of the survivors appealed to the government to come to their rescue as school facilities were unhygienic

    “We have toilets but no water. Our tanks are not working so people defecate anywhere they like. The wells are also not healthy but we don’t have an option.

    “We don’t have dining tables; we sit on the floor to eat. The government should help us to avoid a repeat,” she appealed.

  • Adamawa cholera deaths now 13

    •434 cases recorded

    The number of deaths in the Adamawa State cholera outbreak has risen to 13, with cases rising to 434, the Ministry of Health has said.

    The Information Officer, Mr. Abubakar Muhammed, confirmed this in a statement yesterday.

    The statement reads: “The total number of cases reported from Mubi North and Mubi South councils as at  May 26 is 434, with 13 deaths.

    “While the Case Fatality Rate (CFR) is 3.0 per cent; Mubi North has 211 cases and seven deaths, equivalent to 3.3 per cent CFR.

    “Mubi South has 223 cases and six deaths, equivalent to 2.7 per cent CFR.”

    The Principal Medical Officer of Mubi General Hospital, Dr. Ezra Sakawa, however said most infected patients had been treated and discharged.

    Mubi was hit by cholera two weeks ago, a development experts linked to contaminated water.

    About 90 per cent of residents get their water from vendors, who source water from boreholes meant for irrigation along the bank of River Yedzaram.

  • Cholera outbreak: Four die in Kano

    At least four persons have reportedly died of a fresh cholera outbreak at Wailari settlement in Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.

    One of the parents of the deceased, Mallam Muhammadu Auwalu said two of his children, Uzairu Auwal, (11) and Abdullahi Auwal (10) who were hospitalised were discovered with the symptoms of the outbreak.

    Due to the frequent stooling and vomiting, they eventually gave up the ghost at Yusuf Maitama Hospital in Kwanar Dawaki.

    One Sulaiman Jingir confirmed to our reporter that the cholera also killed two of his children, Aisha Jibril (3) and Jibril Sulaiman (4).

    He explained that Aisha died at home shortly after developing the symptom of the disease, while Jibril died at the hospital.

    Chairman of Kumbotso Local Government Council, Kabiru Ado Panshekara confirmed the incident.

    According to him, he was briefed about the death of three children.

    He noted that urgent measures have been taken to halt the spread of the disease in the area.

    He said he has already communicated  the development to the State Ministry of Health for urgent attention.

  • 12 die of cholera in Adamawa

    •134 hospitalised

    Twelve persons have died and 134 others hospitalised after an outbreak of cholera in Mubi North and South local governments of Adamawa State.

    Neighbouring Maiha, Michika and Hong councils have been put on the alert to avert a spread of the disease.

    Incidence Manager for Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and Director of Public Health, Ministry of Health, Dr. Bwalki Barem Dilli, said medical personnel from the ministry, in partnership with World Health Organisation (WHO), have been drafted to the area to contain the epidemic.

    Dilli added that report of the outbreak became apparent last week when the Mubi General Hospital recorded high profile cases of vomiting and diarrhoea from patients.

    He explained that the ministry, in conjunction with its partners, have taken 11 stool samples to Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Borno State, for investigation.

    According to him, an emergency operation centre was opened to collect data on people suspected to be affected with the epidemic, stressing that toll free lines (08031230359 MTN and 07080601139 AIRTEL) have been opened for reports and complaints.

    He said: “People should wash their hands after answering the call of nature and stop open defection.

     

     

     

     

     

  • Kaduna introduces house-to-house search against outbreak of diseases

    The Kaduna State Government has introduced a house-to-house search mechanism to prevent and protect residents against outbreak of infectious diseases.

    The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Paul Dogo, said in a statement made available to us on Sunday in Kaduna that government was ready to tackle measles, cholera, meningitis and other viral haemorrhagic diseases.

    Dogo noted that the exercise was designed to curb the spread of the diseases across and beyond the state.

    He said the state has not recorded any single case in the 23 local government areas and assured that no chance would be taken to contain any disease outbreak.

    The commissioner said the state has a robust supply chain management system with medicines that can easily be pre-positioned in hospitals to manage isolated cases. ‎‎

    “We have made preparedness for outbreak of infectious diseases such as measles, cholera, meningitis, Lassa fever and other viral haemorrhagic diseases.

    “Our robust supply chain management system have medicines that can easily be pre-positioned in our hospitals to manage isolated cases,” he said.‎

    Dogo also said that the state have maintained polio-free status since November 2012 and is working hard to build sufficient herd immunity through strengthened routine immunisation ‎programme.

    On tuberculosis, the commissioner explained that the ministry had commenced house-to-house search for active tuberculosis patients to curb the spread of the disease by undetected active TB cases within communities in the state.‎‎

    He said that to ensure success, the state government deployed 1,240 newly recruited medical professionals to hospitals across the state.

    “This has improved the human resource situation of our General Hospitals and better quality of services,” the commissioner said.

  • Cholera outbreak in Yobe kill six, 62 hospitalized

    Not fewer than six people have been confirmed dead following an outbreak of Cholera in Bade Local Government of Yobe State.

    Our correspondent who visited Gashua Hospital saw many people on admission for treatment.

    Officials of Disease Control Unit of the State Primary Healthcare Agency disclosed that a total of 68 people were admitted from 25th March, 2018 to 31st March, 2018.

    According to the statistics, eight out of ten people were tested positive with few cases of gastroenteritis.

    Statistics gathered by our correspondent indicate that most of the cases are within Gashua town.

    The records show that Katuzu 6 Sabin Gari 24 Lawan Fanami 7, Lwan Musa 9 Zango 11Sarki Hausawa 5, Yusufari Kachallari 1 with a total of six death.

    The commissioner of Health Yobe State, Dr. Bello Kawuwa confirmed the outbreak but refused to speak about the number of death.

    “We have received reports of the outbreak in Gashua. We have dispatched our team in the area to address the problem.

    As for the number of death and what you saw, I wouldn’t contest that but I haven’t received the report yet because I am in transit”, Dr. Bello said.

    The Bade Local government sanitation officer, Adamu Salleh said the local government council has embarked on a massive hygiene sensitization campaign of the residents on Isolation, treatment, Prevention.

    Our correspondent also observed that the Islamic First Aid Group were seen giving support to a few government health at the hospital for the treatment of the patients.

    The Nation also gathered that residents of Gashua in Friday held special jumaat prayers over the outbreak.

    Lawn Audu, a relative of one of the patients informed that he has spent three days at the hospital but hopes to leave soon.

     

    The Nation also observed that most of the patients are sleeping with their mattresses on the ground with bad sanitary condition as renovation works is still going on at the hospital.
