  • Club visits special school

In the spirit of the love season, members of Babcock University’s Trendz Club visited the School for children with Special Needs, Sagamu, to share their love with the pupils.

The joyous pupils were presented with food stuff, beverages, toiletries, sweets, and a special Valentine cake by the club.

President of the club, Chinedu Uzochukwu said rather than spend the day with friends in school, the students chose “to come and share their love with you.”

Head teacher of the school, Revd Reuben Taiwo thanked the club for the good gesture to rejoice with the pupils on Saint Valentine day.

He prayed for them not only to be successful in their academics but to get good job after graduation.

“As you deem it fit to remember children with special needs, God will also meet your special needs,” he said.

Assistant Head Teacher, Remilekun Olaniyan, said though the school was founded and funded by the state government, religious bodies, non-governmental organisations, clubs and societies have continued to assist the school in cash and kind.

Club urges govts on cancer care

Nigeria could do with more diagnostic equipment, especially for cancer, the old students of Maryland Comprehensive Secondary School, also known as Landers ’88 Reunion Club, have said.

The President, Mr Soji Adekogbe, who spoke at the third edition of Omolara Jolaoso Memorial Lecture, urged federal and state governments to provide adequate funding to equip hospitals with tools required for early diagnosis and prompt treatment of cancer.

He also said the status of cancer care was worrisome as few centres with equipment were not offering services due to one reason or the other.

Adekogbe, who was represented by his Vice President, Mr. Dipo Komolafe, said some time ago, two institutions with radiography equipment experienced a break down for months.

“We are aware that only two teaching hospitals: Lagos University Teaching Hospital -LUTH and University College Hospital (UCH), Ibandan have radiography equipment, and there was a time when the two equipment broke down for months. My last check revealed that it is only the one at LUTH that is functional at present and patients are held up on waiting list for several months.

“You can imagine someone coming from Maiduguri to Lagos for treatment and there is only one machine functioning in the whole of Nigeria. Sadly, many die before it gets to their turn. This definitely cannot be the blue print for cancer treatment in Nigeria. The Federal and state governments need to wake up to their responsibilities and declare a purpose driven state of emergency in the health sector,” he said.

Komolafe noted that their classmate’s death from cancer, still lingered in their heart. “This lecture is in memory of our dear member and friend, Omolara Jolaoso, who was diagnosed with breast cancer around 2010 and later died in 2013 as a result of late detection.”

Komolafe said: “Omolara was a dedicated member of Landers ’88 and was desirous of sharing her experience and providing succour to those that newly discovered their breast cancer status, which was the role she played effectively until her death on December 3, 2013. It was her desire that inspired Landers ’88 to partner a reputable Cancer Foundation, Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, to immortalise her name by institutionalising a breast cancer awareness lecture in her memory.”

Managing Director, Apapa General Hospital, Dr. Adebajo Adewole, called for more awareness and regular medical check-ups, considering that early detection of the disease is vital to its treatment.

Dr Adewole said: “In Nigeria, members of the public still see cancer as a disease of the wealthy, the elderly and developed countries. Many sufferers  still regard it as their fate and as such, a death sentence. But cancer is a global epidemic that affects all ages with low and middle income countries.

“Nigerians should be enlightened on what causes the condition, preventative measure and available treatment options. The disease should no longer be treated as a death sentence or something that has to do with fate. The public should be sensitised on predisposing lifestyle factors like smoking, drinking, obesity, lack of exercise and exposure to carcinogenic products and elements such as body creams with mercury or lead.”

    Lions Club gets president

For members of Lions Club worldwide, this year is a memorable one. It is 100 years old this year.

While other members of the ‘service’ organisation are warming up for the centennial anniversary, it would appear those at Ikeja have begun celebrating already. They inducted their ‘centennial’ President, Augustine Obafemi Ladipo, a graduate of Computer Engineering from the Lagos State University (LASU).

At the ceremony, which held at Quadosh Place on Kudirat Abiola Way (former Oregun Road) in Ikeja, members of the association wore cream-coloured clothe–which the men sewn into a native agbada and traditional pair of trousers in which they appeared resplendent.

The outgoing President Gbolahan Ayantayo, who beat the Lions’ traditional gong ‘to call the house to order’ or begin the event, at 3:59 p.m., also ironically ended his tenure.

As 36th president of the club, he said his tenure was a rewarding one which witnessed donation of material items to Khadijat Al-Kubra Widowhood and Orphanage Foundation and students of Dairy Farm Skills Acquisition Programme and providing a member with a barbing salon and a 3.5KVA power generating set, among others.

It was for these he emerged among the top 10 presidents in District 404B-2 Nigeria. Specifically, he praised Valentine Opone, Second Vice-President, Mark Ebare, a former president and Femi Olaiya, a former secretary, among others. He gave them awards for their excellent performances.

Olaiya, the Chairman of the Investiture Committee, said the 34-year-old Ikeja Club began from a humble beginning, noting that the event had another objective; which is to raise funds for some projects for which he urged all to donate generously.

Alhaji AdulGaniyu Adediji, who chaired the event, described the ceremony as historical, noting that the club had produced more district governors (DGs) and presidents than others in the district.

The world over, triple A, as Adediji is fondly called by his admirers, said the club serves 100 million less-privileged people. He solicited support for the club’s budget of N10 million for the year.

In his goodwill message, the D-G Samuel Taiwo Adewunmi described the Ikeja Lions Club as the oldest in the district. He also canvassed support for its progammes for the year.

“A single act of service,’’ the Deacon in the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) said, “can change a life but when Lions come together to serve, we change the world.’’

Adewunmi, who swore in Ladipo, urged him to serve selflessly.

Ladipo, 48, and 37th President, promised to uphold Adewunmi’s theme for the year that is ‘’Sustaining our Legacy of Service’’ and that of the International President’s motto, New Mountains to Climb. He explained that each mountain represented an opportunity to serve. He gave a breakdown of his budget as follows: free eye screening and donations to public primary schools, youth empowerment scheme to some vocational training centres, planting of over 100 trees, construction and equipping of e-library for two secondary schools.
