Alaafin’s ‘chief guard’ joins octogenarian club

The Sagbua Alaafin of Oyo, Chief Adebayo Makinde, marked his 80th birthday with a thanksgiving service at the First Baptist Church, Ikeja, reports JOSEPH JIBUEZE.

At 80, Chief Adebayo Makinde, the Sagbua Alaafin of Oyo, is still very strong. Apart from a few grey hairs, he walks straight. When he talks, his voice does not shake. He also moves about without a walking stick.

What is the secret of his good health? He attributed this to living a simple life, eating only twice a day and not eating once it is past 6pm, and exercising daily, including cycling, walking and stretching.

Most importantly, Makinde believes life is in God’s hands. “It’s God who gives good health. I live a simple life apart from being a strong believer in God through Christ,” Makinde said.

Having attained the age of 80, Makinde wanted a quiet thanksgiving service in his church, without fanfare. But his children would not have it. To them, their father had done so much for them, and the least they could do was honour him with a befitting birthday party. And so it was.

From the handicapped, widows and orphans, testimonies abound about Makinde’s caring and selfless nature. He believes in the aphorism: “givers never lack”. To many, his life is worth celebrating.

A thanksgiving service was held at the First Baptist Church in Ikeja. Although it was a Saturday, the street and adjoining crescents were lined with assorted cars.

Their owners, gaily dressed men and women, all headed to the church, also known as the “Prevailers’ Sanctuary”. The church was filled to the brim.

A “worship in praises” was held, followed by a processional hymn, prayer of thanksgiving, Bible readings, choir ministration and a sermon by the President, Nigerian Baptist Convention, Rev. Supo Ayokunle.

The preacher said it is not many people that live up to 80 after going “through thick and thin.” “So, we’re celebrating not only the goodness of God, but His mercies,” he said.

He said just as God led His people the Israelites out of danger, He would continue to safeguard His worshippers from bad leadership.

“We don’t have sensible leaders who value Nigerians. It’s like giving leadership to someone who has been discharged from a psychiatric hospital.

“A majority of those leading us are psychiatric patients – impossible people. Do they know who we are? How can leaders behave like animals in the midst of men? How can they embezzle so much?

“Our God knows what we’re passing through. Our life will be sustained by our attitude and our cheerfulness.

“Enemies will not see the road as you escape. God will make a difficult journey easier. The Lord that turned Chief Makinde’s poverty to greatness will bless the rest of us,” he said, to a loud chorus of amen.

Reception followed at the Balmoral Event Centre in Ikeja. The beautifully decorated hall was classy, draped all round with hanging grey linen.

Chairs were covered with orange cloth, while the tables, each numbered, wore white overlays. Neon lights blinked. There was a lot to eat and drink as gorgeously dressed men and women, mostly in red headgear, danced to the Messiah Band tune. A member of the 19-man team of organisers, Chief Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, a lawyer, was the master of ceremony. His lively handling of the event gave it colour.

The celebrator’s friend, Prince Tunde Ponle, who chaired the event, describing the day as special. He praised the family for honouring Makinde in his lifetime. He wished him a longer life.

“We’re still going to enjoy this man for a long, long time to come,” he said.

Ponle thanked Makinde, for influencing his life positively, a sentiment re-echoed by several people who showered praises on the octogenarian.

“The celebrant is my mentor. I’ve always looked up to him and wish to be like him. He’s humble; he’s humorous; he laughs. He has managed his wives as if he’s managing half a wife,” he said.

Wishing Makinde longer life and good health, Ponle said: “We want to see you celebrate 90. We want you to go beyond 90. We’re all here to rejoice. Congratulations and many happy returns,” he said.

Other guests also paid tributes to Makinde. Rev Amos Omorisimi described him as an embodiment of hardwork and a man who has great passion for others and always ready to help in times of need.

“Truly, you’re a gift to the world and a blessing to this generation,” the cleric said.

Makinde’s wife, Wemimo, called him “a father in a million”, adding: “You are a wonderful husband, my mentor, my spiritual adviser and micro-financier.”

His second wife, Adedoyin, said of her “darling husband”: “Our monthly food allowance always includes provision for unforeseen guests…your pharmacy has become a lifeline to many who cannot afford to pay for their healthcare.”

A former Nigerian High Commissioner to Zambia, Chief M.O. Ogunmola, recalled that Makinde has kept a single personal driver for over 30 years. “He is a very tolerant man,” he said.

Makinde said he was excited to witness the honour done to him by his children, some of who schooled and live in Canada, Europe and America, while still alive.

“I feel great. I didn’t expect anything like this, but I thank God. And I thank my children who organised this event.

“At 80, that I’m able to see a thing like this alive – there is nothing greater than that. To be alive and witness all that people have said about me, I feel great; I’m happy.”

On how he is prepared to face challenges that may come with old age, Makinde said no difficulties in life would be greater than what he had survived in his lifetime.

“What other challenge will I have? I was almost crippled at one time, but God healed me. So there’s no other challenge I can face that can be greater than that.

“That’s why I’m very happy now and celebrating God in my life. There are not many people who are as fortunate as I am to pass through difficult periods and come out stronger.

“If they tell you I’m 80, with the way I look and the way I move, you cannot believe it. I thank God.”

His advice to the youth is: “First be honest in all you do. Second, hold fast to God. There’s nothing God cannot do for you. No matter the problem or the challenges, God is able to solve it for you.”

Makinde, born in Lagos on January 14, 1935, attended the Baptist Academy and obtained the best result among his classmates in 1955.

He subsequently obtained a diploma in Pharmacy and began his career at Kingsway Chemists, a subsidiary of UAC.

Makinde later set up the defunct Jollitters Industries. He has been running Sata Pharmacy Limited since it was established in August 2007.

A philantropist and former President of the Rotary Club of Ogba, Makinde is fondly called “Sagbua of the Century,” having been the first Sagbua Alaafin of Oyo in modern times (since 1982). In the makeup of the government of the Alaafin, the Sagbua is a senior member or officer of the ‘military’ arm.

  • Club inducts members in Awka

The Ambassadors Club of Awka, capital of Anambra State, has welcomed new members into its fold, presenting them with membership certificates.

The club, since its founding in 1991, has, against all expectations, become the vehicle of development in the capital city. It has, for instance,  immortalised three outstanding indigenous people of the city through scholarships established in their names.

The three people are the late Prof. Kenneth Dike, first Vice Chancellor of University of Ibadan (UI) who majored in history; former Minister in the then Eastern Region, Dr. Nwoye Otuo, who was the first Awka person to study medicine in Nigeria, and Chief Amanke Okafor, first law graduate in the community and first Secretary General of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Nigeria.

Every year, three students win the scholarships and go on to study the course in which those departed icons distinguished themselves.

The late Okafor served when legal luminary, Chief Rotimi Williams was the NBA’s President.

The club is under the leadership of Collins Iloanya, who holds a Master’s degree from Unilag.

Some of the new members included the member representing Awka South I Constituency in the State Assembly, Hon. Kenechukwu Chukwuemeka, who is also a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Others were Chuka Anueghuagu, Kene Ejiofor, Charles Nwakalor, Obinna Achusi, Omerah Odum and Jekwu Ikem whose names were reeled out by the night’s compeer Chuks Nweke amid sustained  cheers from the audience.

It was also, a display of cars and of food and wines and of the latest dance steps by the members and their wives including their young guests.

One-time governorship aspirant in the state, Chief Emma Nweke, a shipping magnate,  was equally in attendance. T he only Awka name that was obviously absent was that of Chief Ben Ndi Obi, Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Inter-Party Matters. His associates, however, were present.

Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu, former state chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) was in attendance, with the former Deputy Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon Kelue Molokwu.

Speaking with The Nation, State Coordinator, Transform Nigeria Movement (TNM), Comrade Obi Ochije, a member of the Ambassadors Club, said it had been a rallying point for the community.

He commended the leadership of the club for peace in the land and urged them to continue in such manner, adding that with such a situation, very soon, the capital city would be a heaven on earth.

Also, Molokwu told The Nation that the club was attached to the three Awka indigenes who made the community proud in discharge of their duties in their endeavours.

He said the mission of the club was  to be good ambassadors of the community that will show love and brotherliness and contribute to the socio-economic development of the community.

According to him, “as pioneer members of the club, that dream started by Austine Agagboncha has not died and I believe if the upcoming people stay together like this, the community is in for more goodies in future”

For the Chairman of the club, Collins Iloanya, their vision is to transform Awka and indeed, Anambra State and to impact on their members a new idea and bring generational change in the area.

“We want to create an environment that even the 10th generation will not rival, we want to revive Awka Culture and tradition and that is why the club is called Ambassadors”

“The club has already acquired a new land in the heart of the city worth over 10million naira and by 2015, it will have new secretariat where it will hold its meetings and not in any hotel again”

”We have chosen 30th of every December to hold our AGM, a date that cannot clash with any other thing as far as the club is concerned and that is why we have gathered here to inaugurate the new members,” Iloanya said.

  • LMC adopts ‘no pay, no play’ condition for Clubs’ registration

LMC adopts ‘no pay, no play’ condition for Clubs’ registration

In apparent reaction to the spate of protests and threats of strike by players of some Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) clubs, the League Management Company (LMC) has warned that clubs found to be in breach of financial obligations to players will not be registered for the 2014/15 Glo Premier League season.

Chairman of LMC, Nduka Irabor emphasized that ‘a no pay, no play’ policy will be adopted in the registration process for the coming season and noted that all clubs seeking registration must provide proof that there are no overdue payables, especially to the players. He said the zero tolerance for clubs’ indebtedness to players will cover current and former players of the clubs.

Irabor made this clear in a recent communication to club managers and owners and reminded them that compliance to the Financial Criteria is a fundamental requirement for club registration under the Licensing Conditions.

He said the mandatory compliance with licensing regulations has been reiterated by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) which also recently warned that clubs which are not licensed by the Federation would not be registered to compete in CAF Inter-Club competitions.

The LMC Chairman harped on the issue of players’ welfare which he said is a fundamental requirement under club licensing regulations and expressed displeasure that some clubs have been cited in cases of non-fulfillment of contractual obligation to players.

Irabor described as embarrassing to the nation’s football reports of street protests by players of these clubs for non-payment of their salaries and other accruable. He said: “The numerous reports about players in the league being owed salaries for several months, including public protests by players over unpaid salaries are disheartening and it is extremely embarrassing that a great football nation such as ours is exposed to ridicule and not allowed to see the performances of happy and well compensated professional football players.”

He, therefore, vowed that the LMC will uphold the sanctity of player contracts and offer players every necessary aid to obtain redress for any breach of contracts.

CAF just recently reminded clubs through the Federations that the enforcement of licensing conditions has become mandatory from December 1, 2014 and has amended its regulations for Inter-Club competitions to reflect the new realities. For Nigeria, clubs were reminded that they must have a Youth Development programme Coordinator who must have the prerequisite qualifications listed in the criteria.

One of the instruments introduced by the LMC to check overdue payments by clubs is the Financial Performance Guaranty which was widely resisted by most of the club’s during the current season. “The direct effect of non compliance with such basic condition is now too obvious for all to see. The LMC will not budge on its demand for Financial Performance Guarantee in the new season, we will not allow clubs to carry-over their indebtedness to players into the coming season.

The LMC Chairman concluded with an advice to the clubs to seek diversification of their revenue generating capacity by involving their immediate communities in the sporting and financial pursuits of the clubs and assured that they would have the cooperation and relevant guidance of the LMC in this regard.

As part of his build-up to the International  Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Cup scheduled for next week in Germany, Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri was instrumental to GD Toledos’ triumph at the 2014 Mediterranean club championship held in Istanbul, Turkey.

The teams were drawn into four groups of four each with the top teams in each expected to progress to the semifinal stage of the competition.

Quadri and his teammates – Andre Silva and Diogo Silva – were pitched against teams from Tunisia and Slovenia.

It was easy for Quadri and his mates to emerge from the group as the top team as they pounded the teams 3-0 apiece.

In the semifinal tie, they were expected to face France’s Sporting Union which has former world number 30, Liu Song.

Before the encounter, Quadri’s team had been written off by the fans but to the chagrin of the spectators, GD Toledos shocked the French side 3-0 to set up a final clash against a Croatian side.

Narrating how the final match went, the Oyo State-born player said: “Andre Silva started the match and he won against Chinese-born Zheng Jen in a convincing encounter that ended 3-1 for my team to take a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, Diogo Silva could not cope against his opponent in the third match but he lost 3-0 to put the game at 2-1. In the deciding match, I defeated Jen to ensure that my team was crowned the champion of Mediterranean.”

The African champion added: “It was great to be in Turkey as part of my preparation for the ITTF World Cup next week as I had led my team to the third round of the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) Cup in Luxembourg, where we are expected to tackle a French team in our next match of the competition
