Nursing mothers at the Central Hospital in Auchi, Edo State were all smiles when members of Leadership, Experience, Opportunity (LEO) club of the Federal Polytechnic in Auchi (AUCHI POLY) visited the hospital to donate materials to new born babies.

The gesture was part of the club’s humanitarian services lined up to mark the lion calendar. Its president, Stephen Agbra, said the donation was to put smile on the faces of the less privileged.

He said: “We have the objective to put smile on the faces of the people in communities by ensuring we meet some of their needs. In doing so, we give our members an opportunity to experience leadership and humanitarian skills.

“It is said that every man should lend helping hand to his fellow man. We should always take up responsibility to attend to the needs of the people who don’t have much. The club provides a platform to carry out the humanitarian work. We render the selfless service to people and we don’t even expect a thank you from it. Our reward will come from God.”

The Medical Officer of the hospital, Dr Richard Ehigiator, praised the students for the gesture, describing it as rewarding exercise.

  • Club urges students on research

Research is key to the survival as a nation because it benefits the generality of the people and proffer solutions to developmental problems. These were the words of Greg Emokpai, chairman of Pharmaceutical Research Club (PRC) during the club’s maiden research seminar held at the Lecture Theatre III of Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

The event was to enlighten students and lecturers on the benefits they could get from carrying out productive researches. Participants were also told how to carry out thorough research, using some set principles and standards.

Speaking on Survival of women folks in contemporary times, Dr. E. Bafor of the Department of Pharmacology urged female students to embark on research that would save feminine gender from societal problems. She explained how she made efforts to carry out some researches that earned her a doctoral degree in pharmacology.

Her words: “Women need to get involved in research. There are so many interesting parts about the feminine gender, which men may not want to delve into due to religion, morality or other personal reasons. But as ladies, you may not find those reasons tenable because you are familiar with them.

During my PhD studies, only a handful of researchers had done studies on the uterus. This made me encounter many difficulties but I never gave up. I was able to isolate some 16 compounds that had effect on the uterus and six of them were new to the humans.”

She urged the students not to relent, saying they could go conduct their researches during long holidays. She added: “Research is good but it is not being fully utilised in Nigeria. When you go to other countries, whatever you discover becomes their property and the credit is given to them.”

She revealed her plans to float a research platform called ‘My Summer Research Programme’. She said the scheme would enable students to carry out researches during holidays.

Prof Ray Ozolua encouraged the student not to give up, saying some researches may be expensive but students could carry out findings without spending much.

The chairman of the club, Greg Emopkai, said the club was set to create platform that would enable students express their curiosity, as well as put up a better translation to their discoveries, which were ignored.

He said the club was poised to set the pace in research, noting that students were about to carry out a research on the cases of ulcer on the campus.

“Ulcer is a common problem on the campus; we are set to carry out a research on its cause and the solutions. It is high time we let the school community feel the presence of pharmacy students around,” he said.

  • Club predicts UK growth of 2.8%

Low inflation and stronger eurozone growth should help the United Kingdom (UK) economy expand 2.8% this year despite political uncertainty ahead of the election, according to an EY Item Club report.

It said low inflation was adding to the benefits of higher employment and the positive effects of lower oil prices.

Item Club chief economic adviser Peter Spencer said the financial markets seem prepared for further Greek problems.

But potential headwinds were a weak government and EU referendum, he said.

The forecast growth is slightly down on the 2.9% expansion that the Item Club previously predicted, due to official fourth-quarter GDP figures coming in weaker than expected.

The Item Club forecasts growth in 2016 of 3%, up from 2.9% estimated previously.

Inflation has fallen to zero in recent months and, along with improvements in employment, is boosting consumer confidence, the Item Club’s spring forecast said.

The report said an added bonus was coming from recovery in the eurozone, helped by the European Central Bank’s €1.1 trillion (£790billion) asset purchase stimulus programme.

The euro bloc’s recovery should offset a hit to overseas trade from the strength of the pound, the Item Club said.

Mr Spencer said: “The economy is taking the general election in its stride as ‘noflation’ trumps politics. The eurozone recovery is bedding in and completes the positive UK growth picture that we anticipate for 2015 and 2016.

He enjoined the leaders of the club to be transparent and accountable, stressing that openness would guarantee confidence members have in them.

The club president, Yesufu Lawani, advised the inductees to avail themselves of the opportunities offered by the club for self-development and get actively involved in its activities.

Lade promised to build on the success recorded by his predecessor, adding that he would uphold the values of the club.

  • Lagos-based boxing club proprietor begs for kits

The Head Coach, Sunny Clay Boxing Club of Lagos, Sunday Nwamuda, on Thursday appealed to corporate organisations and philanthropists to donate kits to the upcoming boxers of the club.

Nwamuda made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos. He said that insufficient kits were a major challenge affecting the boxers during training in the club affiliated to the Lagos State Boxing Association.

Nwamuda said the few available ones were not enough to go round the number of young boxers, describing the kits as fundamental for training and protection of boxers.

“We have some but the number of athletes are increasing by the day and that has prompted us to make the appeal for more kits. Sometimes the boxers will have to wait for others to finish training before they can make use of the kits,’’ he said.

The coach listed the kits as head guard, gloves, knee protector, tooth guard and tummy guard and identified them as basic requirements for the sport.

Nwamuda said the club holds quarterly competitions for boxers, noting that none of the competitions had been organised since the beginning of the year due to a lack of support.

According to him, such support can come in form of funds, corporate gift items, scholarships and stationeries.

“These items are to encourage the athletes so that they can be more committed to developing their talents,’’ he said.

He said that the last competition organised by the club was held in September 2014, adding that it created the avenue for the discovery of budding talents.
