Council chief compels residents to clean homes

Council chief played the enforcer last Saturday, getting some residents of Ikorodu, Lagos, to participate in the monthly environmental sanitation.

Princess Adunni Oyefusi, Ikorodu West Local Council Development Area Executive Secretary Stormed Houses 2 and 4B Olayinka Jumbo Street to compel the residents to join in the exercise.

Residents of House 4B argued with her; those in House 2 ignored her.

She threatened to get them arrested before some of them saw reason with her.

A resident told the council chief that he swept House 4B.

“Can you imagine a house where a man sweeps the surroundings while the female are standing aloof? The women in this house don’t bother to join the exercise. I was the one that swept this compound earlier on,” he said.

Princess Oyefusi warned the residents against incurring the government’s wrath with their attitude.

“I learnt the residents in those houses constitute a nuisance to the community. They even dare to remove government seal on their houses. I will report their matter to the state government should they fail to heed this last warning for sanction,” she said.

At Ipakodo, Princess Oyefusi lamented the community’s refusal to stop dumping refuse indiscriminately.

“This same place,” she said, “was cleared of refuse last month; the residents have dumped refuse there again. People should be concerned about their health.”

She vowed to bring the Mobile Court to the community to handle the matter.

  • Council chief seeks support

Executive Secretary of Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government of Lagos State Mr Olurotimi Adeleye has urged residents to work with his administration for rapid development at the grassroots.

Speaking at the swearing-in of the council’s four-member transition committee at the Area Office Events Centre, Adeleye urged party chieftains to bury their differences and work together for the party.

“Let us all come together. This is not a time to say I am for Paul or I am for Silas, we are all members of the APC and must come together to promote the cause of our great party and give concrete evidence of performance to the people at the grassroots,” Adeleye said.

He continued: “Each time we want to remember our differences, let us remember the broom, our party’s symbol. No single unit of the broom can ensure cleanliness, but there’s no dirt that cannot be taken care of when it comes as a bunch. This is the time to team up against those on the other side who have no other mission than to kill, steal and destroy the good works of our party in the state and in this council.”

The council chief called on all eligible voters to ensure that they collect their permanent voter’s card (PVC), which according to him, is the only instrument through which they can exercise their civil duty.

The council, he said, would ensure that all those who are eligible to vote, but do not have the cards are adequately captured in the ongoing registration.

“My tenure in this local government may be short, but let us all team up to ensure its success. One of the ways to do that is to mobilise all residents to get their voters’ cards so that we all can have a voting right in the election coming up next month,” he said.

“I am from this area and I had lived here before I became the council chairmaný. I am familiar with the nook and cranny of this area. I also know what problems my people are going through. So, we reasoned that these roads required urgent attention,” the council chief said.

Mr Salami assured the residents that the four roads would be constructed to meet the standard specified by the state government, which include the provision of walk ways for pedestrians on both sides of the roads and provision of concrete drainage to ensure free flow of water.

He further informed the people that the contractors handling the road projects will complete the projects in two months. He appealed to the residents to co-operate with the contractors to enable them to deliver the job on schedule.

He also informed the residents that they are the direct beneficiaries of the road projects; even as he urged them to monitor the construction and report any lapses they observe to the council.

He added that apart from the residents serving as supervisors of the projects, he himself and the council officials will be visiting the area from time to time.

Some of the residents expressed their appreciation to the governor for fulfilling the promise he made to them during his electioneering campaigns in 2011.

Why I want to be senator, by council chief

An All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial aspirant Hon. Kamal Bayewu has said the people of his constituency deserve a worthy representative at the National Assembly.

Bayewu, who declared his interest in the Lagos West Senatorial seat yesterday, hailed the APC National Leader Bola Tinubu for giving opposition “a strong voice in the polity”.

Speaking at the rally held at Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA), the banker turned politician said his ambition to represent the largest Senatorial district in the state was borne out of the fact that the people deserved the best.

He said: “Whether we like it not, we are all beneficiaries of Tinubu’s largesse. This great and highly resourceful leader used to tell us that power is not served a la carte. You have to work assiduously for it so that you will value it and impact people’s lives positively”.

While thanking all the party faithfuls from the entire 28 local governments that make up the district for the love shown to him, he promised to make the APC agenda his topmost priority.

“I am signing a covenant with all of you today that every three months there will be stakeholders meeting and we will ensure that dividends of democracy get to all of you in Lagos West Senatorial District,” he said.

He added: “I spent 27 years in the banking industry. I always tell people that there is no difference in banking and politics. In the bank, you are required to assist people by rendering service. That is what politics is all about”.

“This is a divine project that must be accomplished. I know I cannot do it alone. That is why I have come to you to solicit your support. God himself said ‘Ask and it shall be given to you. Knock and it shall be opened. Seek and you shall find’. I believe with God, nothing is impossible.”

  • Oyo council chief to would-be voters: protect your cards

    •‘PDP, others jittery over APC’

The Caretaker Chairman of Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, Ope Salami, has urged the people to protect their voter’s cards.

He was at the weekend  addressing All Progressives Congress (APC) members at Arulogun, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Salami said:” We have received news that some opposition parties in this state have gone to bring money from Abuja to buy your voter’s card from you by pretending they want to give you loan. Please reject them and ensure that your exercise your right by voting.”

Salami, who pledged the support of his local government for Ajimobi’s re-election, said: “Don’t sell your voter’s cards to anybody because the oppositions are very desperate to buy your voter’s cards to rig the election in 2015. Don’t use your voter’s cards to borrow money or take a loan from any politician. If you do, your are selling out your future to the termites that are bent on eating up the future of your children.

“When INEC begins the voter’s registration soonest, please all of you must ensure that you register to exercise your franchise. The card must be kept safely until the day of the election.

“The peace we are experiencing in this state during Senator Abiola Ajimobi’s regime is unique in the history of this state. Over the last three years in office, he has laid a solid foundation and for continuity purpose, we all need to support him to complete all this projects.”

Also at the weekend, the Caretaker Chairman of Ibadan North East Local Government, Mr.Ladi Oluokun said the opposition parties in the Southwest have become jittery about the APC’s rising profile.

Oluokun spoke with reporters in Ibadan shortly after a meeting with his party leaders in the local government.

He attributed the defeat of Dr Kayode Fayemi in Ekiti State to militarization.

Oluokun said Ajimobi’s achievements were enough to guarantee his re-election.

The council chief said: “This man (Ajimobi), on assumption of office, put an end to brigandage and violence from members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) who held the state to ransom for years and massacred many innocent people. Residents can now sleep with their two eyes closed unlike the period when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government took sides with a faction of NURTW. May we not experience violence again in this state.”

  • Council chief leads campaign for a cleaner capital

Council chief leads campaign for a cleaner capital

There is a sustained drive to keep Ikeja, Lagos State capital, clean.

An environmental services and waste management unit headed by Mr. Kolawole Ajanaku, has been established for this purpose by the Chairman, Ikeja Local Government, Hon. Wale Odun-lami.

But the council chief himself does indeed spearhead cleanup exercises, seeking not just to lead by example but also practically instill healthy living in the people. For instance, he leads a campaign team that orientates the residents on environmental issues including pre-rains and de-flooding programmes.

On designated sanitation days, he wears his knee-length boots, picks up his shovel and steps into the gutter to excavate silt and all manner of disused items. Where traders clog up the environment, he appeals to them to desist from such acts and keep the capital clean.

The Odunlami administration believes that the host of Lagos seats of power needs all it can get to maintain an impeccable profile. For instance, the administration has initiated several infrastructural programmes to lift the standards of the council.

It has built new roads, rehabilitated others, and ensured that health facilities are in place were the residents need them. Also, school infrastructures have been upgraded, among others.

The council leadership has rehabilitated Oba Akran Road as well as Otigba Street, Computer Village. Drainages and culverts have been built in water-logged areas, just as flood plain parts of the council have been landscaped for appropriate infras-tructural remedies.

The health profile of the area has also been boosted with the completion of public health centres at Obafemi Awolowo Way and Onilekere. Public schools at Ikeja area, classroom furniture including desks and benches have been provided.

The administration has equally enhanced sanitation and healthy living by building prototype public toilets in the area with borehole facilities. Primary school pupils are regularly assisted with free aids, including power generating sets, computers and exercise books. Every year, free GCE forms are given to exam candidates. Security is equally improved by providing the police with logistics support.

The recently inaugurated multi-storey building with 300 units of shops at Obafemi Awolowo Way has provided traders better options. So, have the 150 units of stalls at Onipetesi night market.

Hon. Odunlami believes that if anywhere should be above par in hygiene and infrastructure, it is the state capital. He also says that his administration priori-tises the well-being of grassroots residents.
