    Abiodun mourns Iperu-Remo monarch

Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun has described the transition of his town’s royal father, the Alaperu of Iperu-Remo, Oba Adeleke Adelekan Idowu-Basibo.

He described the monarch’s demise as “a deeply shocking and irreplaceable personal loss”.

Abiodun, a prince of the Iperu-Remo kingdom, added that even though he was still trying to come to terms with the news of the passing of the royal father, he acknowledged the immutability of the counsel of Almighty God, whose decision on human life no mortal can question.

The governor, who described the late monarch as a royal father, friend and confidant, said he was devastated to learn of the sudden passing of the highly distinguished, revered, and beloved traditional ruler, whose reign brought peace and prosperity to the Iperu-Remo kingdom, Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.

He said: “To say the very least, Oba Adeleke Adelekan Idowu-Basibo was a paragon of excellence. From his primary education at St. James Primary School to his A-level programme at The Polytechnic, Ibadan; University College London, where he studied marine economics; the diploma programs in importing and exporting at the Yaba College of Technology, Lagos; and his Ph.D programme at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Oba Adeleke Adelekan Idowu-Basibo demonstrated undiluted excellence, which also hallmarked his distinguished career at the Customs Service in Europe that spanned two decades.

“His reign brought remarkable progress and development to the Iperu-Remo kingdom in many areas, from infrastructure development to economic advancement and the expansion of the borders of peace and progress.

“He was a man of great grace who carried himself with dignity and saw to the well-being of his people at all times, regardless of creed or political affiliation. He will be sorely missed.”

  • Battle to produce Abiodun’s successor begins

Battle to produce Abiodun’s successor begins

As the only senatorial district yet to produce a governor since the creation of Ogun State 48 years ago, the scramble for the number one seat is mainly among politicians from Ogun West. However, aspirants from Ogun Central and Ogun East, which have dominated the position, are not relenting, as politicians from Ogun West are already warming up for the 2027 race. ERNEST NWOKOLO reports

The next general election is more than two years away but politicians eyeing the governorship seat in Ogun State have begun preparations for the contest in early 2027. They are assembling their teams and making consultations across the three senatorial districts to ascertain the prevailing sentiments on zoning in the election cycle.

Given the nature of Nigerian politics, Governor Dapo Abiodun, who is of Remo extraction in Ogun East Senatorial District, holds the key; at least within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Abiodun succeeded Senator Ibikunle Amosun from the Owu arm of Egba in Ogun Central. If Abiodun’s successor were to be determined based on zoning or power rotation, the choice would have been narrowed down to aspirants from Ogun West, which has not produced a governor since the return to civil rule in 1999.

However, other considerations determine who gets the chance to take a shot at the governorship. Since the return to civil rule in 1999, the governorship seat has been rotating between Ogun East and Ogun Central; leaving the Ogun West to remain as a mere spectator. Even before 1999, the two districts dominated affairs pertaining to the governance of the state.

Politicians from the Ogun Central are eyeing the seat ahead of 2027. Will it be proper for Abiodun to hand power to another Egba man (Ogun Central) when his immediate predecessor is from that zone? The politics of Oke Mosan Governor’s Office appeared to be the backbone of the Ogun Central, the reason the people always take the act seriously when it matters most. The area, which hosts the state capital, is populous and a deciding factor in major electoral contests. However, the other two districts, Ogun West and Ogun East are the state’s economic and industrial hubs, while Ogun Central is largely a civil service zone.

The battle to produce Abiodun’s successor has already begun. The Egba people are pushing for one of their own to succeed Abiodun whose tenure ends in May 2027. A group, the Egba Lokan Agenda 2027 which is driving the clamour for another governor from the zone, has listed former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, former High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Amb. Sharafa Adetunji Ishola, Sen. Lanre Tejuosho, Olumide Osoba (son of former Governor Olusegun Osoba), Sen. Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello (daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo) and Minister of Finance, Chief Wale Edun as the zone’s potential governorship aspirants for 2027.

However, it is the scramble for the number one seat in the state by politicians from Ogun West that appears to be generating more attention.  They have been enjoined to rally around a single individual to present a formidable front in the battle for the elusive position, given the daunting political challenges plaguing the zone over the quest for the position since the return to civil rule in 1999.

The quartet of Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, Abiodun Isiaq Akinlade and Gboyega Nasir Isiaka (GNI) are prominent politicians from the zone angling to succeed Abiodun. Interestingly, they are all members of the ruling APC.

Apparently, because of the challenges ahead, no other politician from the zone has shown interest in other political parties.

    Solomon Adeola

Senator Solomon Adeola is nursing an ambition to govern the state but has declared early this year that it is not time for people to be concerned about the Ogun State 2027 governorship race in 2025.

Adeola who represents Ogun West at the Senate on the platform of the APC, posited that his focus for now is to bring more empowerment and developments to his constituents and Nigeria generally.

He said: “I don’t think it is time for that now. We are still involved in trying to bring more dividends of democracy to our people. What we are here to do today is to appreciate the Almighty God for his support in the past years and to also celebrate the new year with my people for their support and cooperation as well, because they are the ones who put me in this office.

“So, in the future, we can start talking about that when the time is ripe to know if I am going forward or I am staying where I am, the future will determine all of that.”

Though he does not talk about it openly, Adeola is believed to be the big masquerade in the race for the Oke Mosan Government House in 2027. A veteran lawmaker since 1999, he made moves to launch into the Ogun politics in 2015 and 2019 from Lagos State but in both instances, the then Governor Ibikunle Amosun forced him to beat a retreat.

However, he staged a successful comeback in 2023, by securing the party’s ticket for the Ogun West senatorial seat and won. Since then, his influence and political clout have loomed large in Ogun West politics. This has prompted some keen observers to predict that he is the politician to beat this time around if decides to throw his hat into the ring.

The perceptions of many are that 2027 is the critical year for Ogun West to get justice for the long years the zone had been shut out of power and Adeola is deemed the acceptable political figure from the zone with the antecedents and commensurate stamina, including the financial muscle to galvanise the necessary support needed to prosecute governorship ambition that could lead to victory.

     Gboyega Nasir Isiaka

Gboyega Nasir Isiaka (GNI) who represents Imeko/Afon Federal Constituency in the National Assembly is believed to be eyeing Dapo Abiodun’s seat again in 2027. Isiaka, more popularly known as GNI is a cerebral politician, technocrat and experienced hand in Ogun politics. He aspired to govern the state three times in the past, in 2011, 2015 and 2019 when he contested for the seat on the platforms of the People’s Party of Nigeria (PPN), the PDP and the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He has faced different challenges in his three unsuccessful attempts to govern the state. These include inadequate resources, sailing against the political tide, poor timing, weak political platform, inexperience and lack of strong backing from a wide spectrum of critical stakeholders in Ogun politics.

However, now that he is a federal lawmaker on the platform of the APC, he will be assessed based on his antecedents as a House of Representatives member and project his political future.

    Noimot Salako-Oyedele

Deputy Governor Noimot Salako-Oyedele is rumoured to have governorship ambition. She is of Otta-Awori extraction in Ogun West Senatorial District, a section that commands a significant voting strength. She is visibly loyal to her principal, Abiodun, and the APC leaders in the state and beyond. Mrs Salako-Oyedele has never expressed any governorship ambition even if it means shrouding the intention in ambiguity. But, in one of the forums meant to advance the Ogun West agenda, she advised the promoters to recognize the place of Otta-Awori to enhance the success of their quest.

A critical stakeholder who craved anonymity said Salako-Oyedele is eyeing the Senate seat for Ogun West. He added that her rumoured governorship ambition is a stepping stone to secure the party’s ticket to represent the constituency at the Senate.

    Abiodun Akinlade

Abiodun Isiaq Akinlade is the federal lawmaker representing Yewa South and Ipokia Federal Constituency in the Green Chamber. The 57-year-old Akinlade came into the political limelight in 2003 when he was elected to represent his constituency at the National Assembly.

Akinlade is one politician who enjoys the support of his constituency in and out of office which explains why he succeeded in his quest to return to the House of Representatives in 2023 on the platform of the APC; his fourth term as a member of the House of Representatives. He is the first federal lawmaker to have the privilege of representing his constituency for four terms since the return to civil rule in 1999.

He is said to be aspiring to run for the governorship seat in 2027. Although this ambition dates back to 2011 when the clamour for a governor of Ogun West extraction began. He is one of the politicians from the zone waiting for the power of incumbency to nudge and assure him of a safe landing before throwing his full weight into the ring.

The big issue today is the buy-in of the Ogun West agenda by the two other senatorial districts. Sensing that the position may elude Ogun West again this time, former President Olusegun Obasanjo in August 2024, appealed to the two different zones to support the bid for the zone also known as the Yewa axis to produce a governor in 2027.

Obasanjo has warned that unless Ogun East (Ijebu and Remo) and Ogun Central (the Egba) yielded ground, the Ogun West will not succeed in its quest to put one of its sons or daughters in Oke Mosan Governor’s Office in 2027 or any other time in future. The elder statesman recalled that he laboured to ensure that a former ECOMOG Commander, the late General Tunji Olurin, who hailed from the zone, became a governor in 2011 on the platform of the PDP. However, he failed as Olurin lost the election to Ibikunle Amosun.

The first civilian governor, the late Olabisi Onabanjo hailed from Ijebu Ode in Ogun East, while former Governor Osoba, an Egba man, is from Ogun Central. After Osoba’s tenure, Gbenga Daniel who hails from Sagamu in Ogun East took over the reins. Daniel, now a senator, was succeeded by Ibikunle Amosun, an Owu son from Ogun Central, who in turn handed the baton of power to the incumbent Governor Abiodun from Iperu in Ogun East.

The question that keeps popping up is, who succeeds Abiodun? Ladi Adebutu, the PDP candidate during the last general election, is still in the race to govern the state. Adebutu is from Iperu in Ogun East where the incumbent governor hails from. Will power remain in Ogun East till 2031 or return to Ogun Central? Or will Ogun West succeed in producing a governor this time? Only time will tell.

  • CSOs applaud Gov Abiodun for suspending monarch over assault on septuagenarian

CSOs applaud Gov Abiodun for suspending monarch over assault on septuagenarian

A coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Ogun state has commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for his swift decision to suspend the Olorile of Orile-Ifo, Oba Semiu Ogunjobi, for six months after he publicly humiliated a 73-year-old man, Chief Arinola Abraham Love, on a highway.

The CSOs also praised the Ogun state police command for arraigning the embattled monarch on Tuesday on a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

In a statement issued in Abeokuta and signed by the coalition’s chairman, activist lawyer Comrade Solomon Bankole, the group lauded the state government for taking decisive action.

However, they urged that the case should not be abandoned at the preliminary stage, stressing the need to ensure justice for the victim.

Bankole condemned Oba Ogunjobi’s role in the incident, describing it as an abuse of power.

He recounted how the monarch allegedly forced the elderly man to kneel before him on the highway while his palace aides physically assaulted him.

Emphasizing that such behaviour disgraces the status of traditional rulers in the “Káàrò, O ò Jí’re” land, Bankole insisted that suspension alone was insufficient.

He called for the thorough prosecution of the monarch to serve as a deterrent.

He further stated that Chief Arinola’s dignity had been trampled upon in the eyes of the public and that the only way for the government to prove its commitment to protecting citizens’ rights was to ensure justice for the septuagenarian.

“It beats our imagination to behold the disturbing video of the humiliation carried out on the personality of that 73-year old Chief Arinola, where a supposed custodian of the Yoruba cultural beliefs and norms was seen ranting like someone bitten by a rabies infected dogs”.

“As a Yoruba man to start with, it is not in our culture; it is against our tradition and values to have children physically assaulting the elders, talk talkless of having a traditional rulers supervising such public humiliation of someone old enough to be his father”.

“I have watched and listened to that video which has now gone viral and I must say that it was too horrible and unacceptable in our society”.

“Watching that 73-year-old man helplessly on his kneels, facing a downpour of curses and absorbing a hot slap by a palace slave was a gory sight and a nightmare.

Chief Arinola was indeed, caught at the wrong side of the monarch’s law and so, he was dragged to the floor and dehumanised before the world.

We are indeed, grateful to the finger that recorded that scene and released the clean video, did us a big favour otherwise, the fragile looking Baba would have been successfully humiliated, probably killed and buried without any noise just as Oba Ogunjobi had boasted.

“Ogun CSOs is seriously in support of the steps so far taken by the state government by suspending the power-drunk monarch, the Olorile of Orile Ifo, Oba Abdul-Semiu Ogunjobi who publicly humiliated the septuagenarian, Chief Arinola”.

“It is on this premise that we are also demanding that the boy that slapped him shouldn’t be allowed to return to his wife and children.

Aside his six-month suspension, the king must produce the overzealous boy and other disposable chanting his panegyric while descending on that Baba”.

“We commend the media practitioners in the state for bringing such report to the fore for public discussion as well as other stakeholders who rose up to defend the old man who was publicly assaulted and dehumanised”.

“We are now calling on all the security agencies to make sure that Oba Ogunjobi is prosecuted as this will go a long way at setting the standard for what the traditional institution should be in Ogun State”.

  • Gov Abiodun: Creative thinking and prudent management of resources

Gov Abiodun: Creative thinking and prudent management of resources

    By Femi Ogbonnikan

This is another assessment season for governments, corporate bodies, and individuals. For the administration of the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the 2024 fiscal year was a year of great accomplishments in very many respects. From road infrastructure development projects to healthcare delivery service, human capital development, domestic and foreign investment inflow, security, Easy-of-Doing-business index, and economic growth, etcetera, achievements within the year have been quite tremendous.

All these did not happen by accident. It’s the outcome of diligent planning, commitment, policy consistency, and prudent management of resources. To begin with infrastructure development, there is a long list of landmark projects the administration has commissioned that have added to the fortune of the state’s economy and industry. As of today, over 600 kilometres of roads have been constructed across the state to ease the movement of goods and persons. Apart from internal connectivity, priority has also been given to the highways that connect Ogun with neighbouring states, particularly Lagos.

The most recent of these is the Denro-Ishasi-Akute Road commissioned by Governor Abiodun at the tail end of the year. Until the intervention of the present government, the road had suffered prolonged neglect under successive administrations.

Similarly, construction work on the Akute-Oke Aro road within Ifo Local Government Area is also progressing simultaneously. While commissioning the Ojodu Abiodun-Denro-Ishasi-Akute Road, the governor promised to complete the project within the shortest possible time, signaling a new dawn for these suburb communities.  Among others, Denro-Ishashi is one of the fastest growing communities in Ogun State. Its rapidly expanding population is as a result of affordable housing. Bordering Nigeria’s largest commercial city, Lagos, it has continued to witness an increase in the influx of people who cannot afford the rising trend of accommodation rent. With the current economic challenges facing the nation, rent in Lagos has gone beyond the reach of average income households. So, the community offers itself as an alternative settlement option.

But the deplorable condition of the road has for so long remained a nightmare for the residents. The agony of the people in the affected areas had been a popular reference point for the media before Governor Abiodun’s intervention. However, through the intervention of the Abiodun administration, the road has been restored to a better shape to ease the suffering of people in the area.

Thus, people can now travel between Lagos and Ogun State in less than an hour for a journey that would hitherto take two or three hours or even more before the advent of the present administration. More and more people are now coming to Ogun State to live, to work and to hold conferences because of easy accessibility.

While construction work on the 20-kilometre Agbara-Lusada-Atan in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area is almost being completed, Prince Abiodun has equally put Ajuwon and Akute-Ajuwon roads on the priority list, saying “I am a promise-keeping governor.”

For so long, the Agbara-Lusada-Atan road has been in a deplorable condition. Yet, the road is of great economic importance to the State and the nation as a whole.” Prince Abiodun maintained that his administration had kept faith with his promise to ensure that road construction was evenly spread across the 20 local governments in the state.

The ever-busy Lagos-Ota-Sango-Abeokuta which has remained a nightmare to the commuters and motorists along the corridor also received the attention of the Ogun State government under Prince Dapo Abiodun. Ordinarily, the road is a direct responsibility of the Federal Government but bureaucratic bottleneck had stalled the joint efforts of the Ogun State government and its counterpart in Lagos State to take over the financing of it in the interest of the commuting public. However, following persistent agitation that culminated in the eventual handing over of the road to the two states, the contract for the reconstruction work was awarded to Craneburg Construction Company in May 2024. This was borne out of the concern to relieve the people of the pain they go through on a daily basis.

In addition to this, the governor has also facilitated other federal projects including Laderin Train Station road phase one, Abeokuta. The project is in two phases beginning from Laderin to the train station with the channelization of storm water to the drainages.

Beyond that, the Ogun State ministry of Works and Infrastructure is also collaborating with the Federal Government to rehabilitate additional 21 roads across the state, beginning with Ado Odo/Ota, Yewa North and Yewa South, as well as Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South. One of such key projects is the ongoing reconstruction of Sango-Atan-Owode-Idi-Iroko Road. The project has been on paper for so many years.

The real game changer is the Gateway Agro-Cargo International Airport, Ilishan-Remo billed to commence flight operations anytime from now. Though a capital-intensive project, the Airport was built in a record-breaking short period of two years, thus, making it the fastest to be constructed ever in the history of this country. It recorded the first historic flight landing sometime last year. As already projected, the Airport will begin scheduled and non-scheduled flights any time from now, as the approval process to get the airport running has reached an advanced stage.

Power is the engine room of economic and industrial growth. To give further boost to industrial transformation initiative of the administration, Governor Abiodun has expressed interest in acquiring the Hydro Power Plant situated at the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to facilitate the availability of energy for investors in the state. The importance of the long-abandoned Hydro Power Plant to the state’s economy cannot be over-emphasized. When successfully resuscitated, it will attract sufficient energy for business interests in the state. It will also highlight the state’s potential as a hub for industrial activities by ensuring affordable energy costs through this acquisition.

For the health concern, the recent transfer of the 250-bed capacity hospital, Abeokuta is a further testament to the administration’s commitment to accessible healthcare service delivery to the good people of Ogun State.

The project was 65 percent completion level when former governor Ibikunle Amosun abandoned it midway. Realising the state’s financial incapacitation due to the challenge of the current economy, the present government decided to enter into concessionary arrangements with global health management institutions to compete and run the hospital on behalf of the state government.

While performing the handover ceremony to Viewpoint Health Management Services Limited and Pan African Capital Holdings at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Abiodun assured that the 250-bed Specialist Hospital would start operations in March 2025 in the first instance and subsequently commence full operations in June of the same year.

“This hospital will meet the precise needs of our population. It is scheduled for partial opening in March 2025 and full operations in June 2025.

“From what we have seen and done, if that hospital is properly run, medical tourism will be attracted to that hospital,” he enthused.

Governor Abiodun further emphasized that the hospital would be equipped with advanced facilities and cutting-edge technology for effective healthcare delivery, as well as serve as a referral centre for medical research, training, and innovation.

The Abiodun administration’s commitment to affordable housing aligns with its urban regeneration policy as well as the new housing policy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. So far, the administration has built over 4,000 houses across the state, while also working towards the delivery of 10,000 housing units before the end of the second tenure of Governor Abiodun.

The governor gave the assurance when he received the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Mr. Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo, who paid him a courtesy call in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

“To date, we have built about 4,000 affordable houses within four years, and we are still building. By the time I’m done, we will probably build about 10,000 houses,” he said.

Another project called “Civil Servants Village,” sitting on a 50-hectare of land is also ongoing to give opportunity for members of the state workforce to buy land and build their houses.

The governor further assured that his administration would establish a system where Nigerians in the Diaspora would acquire property in the state online and track their development wherever they are.

For four consecutive sessions under the administration of Abiodun, the state has routinely maintained its competitive edge over the rest parts of the country. The administration has been able to initiate and sustain the trajectory of economic growth through aggressive infrastructure development, improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) capacity, industrial investments, human capital development, youth empowerment, improvement in agricultural value chains, land reform policy, Ease-of-Doing-Business, healthcare delivery service, affordable housing and implementation of an integrated transportation master plan, among others.

Over the last five years, there has been continuous improvement in the Ease-of-Doing-Business and land reforms initiative which provide attraction for investors. The same reason also accounted for the creation of four economic zones in the State in addition to the Agbara Industrial Zone, which includes Ota and Kajola axes. At present, Agbara Industrial Zone is arguably the largest industrial zone in Nigeria and probably one of the largest in the continent. It is the zone that makes Ogun State the industrial capital of Nigeria.

As of today, Ogun is among the few states that can survive independently of the Federal Government. Due to the combined effects of creative thinking and prudent management of resources, Ogun State has retained itself as one of Nigeria’s resilient and economically viable states amid the global challenges.

The latest report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) confirms the resilience of the state’s economy based on its sustained growth and enhanced revenue-generating capacity. According to the release, Ogun State increased its IGR in 2023 from N120.58 billion to N146.87 billion made up of N71.67 billion in tax revenues and N75.19 billion. Efforts are also being made to shore up the IGR for better service delivery to the people.

To ensure food self-sufficiency, the Abiodun administration has also initiated rice production to make agriculture another major income earner for the state government with no less than N30 billion as an addition to the Internally Generated Revenue.

As part of his renewed commitment to boost food production in the state, Governor Abiodun recently flagged off the harvest of a 200-hectare rice plantation at Magboro Rice Farm in Obafemi Owode-Local Government Area of the state. The motive for the initiative is to revolutionise the traditional mode of farming to it more productive system.

Traditionally, Ogun State has a long history of rice production, especially the local brand popularly known as Ofada rice. However, large-scale production has been severely limited by the use of indigenous farming methods by small-holder farmers. This is despite the various policies by successive governments to support these local farmers to promote food security and also preserve the cultural  heritage.

With the renewed support of the Abiodun administration, culminating in the establishment of the 200-hectare plantation, the state is now prospecting for more income from rice production.

To that extent, Ogun State has joined the league of large-scale rice-producing states in the country. The farm is the brainchild of the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project supported by the World Bank.  The initiative aligns with the policy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to boost agricultural productivity to provide affordable food to the growing populace.

Though there are still challenges to surmount, the outlook of the economy in the New Year looks more promising. There is a silver lining in the sky.

How Abiodun is tackling Ogun’s infrastructure deficit

The brand new year 2025 is here and Governor Dapo Abiodun has left no one in doubt that with renewed, bold and audacious approaches, he will continue the fulfillment of his campaign promises to the good people of Ogun State.

In his new year message, Governor Abiodun said, 2025 will be a time to address some of the major challenges facing the state, using his deep understanding of the various socio-economic factors.

Using the governor’s wonderful performances and ratings in 2024 as yardsticks, pundits are already predicting that Abiodun will deliver on more of his promises to the advantage of the good people of the different parts of Ogun state.

Last year, the good listener that he is, he calmly but intently examined the many constructive criticisms directed at his person and his administration by sincerely concerned stakeholders as well as the destructive and tirades of opposition politicians at various times, seeking to further understand the needs of his people in his quest to leave Ogun state and its citizens much better than he met both in 2019.

Since his emergence as governor, he has been redefining the responsibilities of government in Ogun State. The silent operator that he is, within a short period of time, his administration has constructed about 700kilometres of roads, spread across the three senatorial districts of the state.

These completed roads are beside the several other ongoing road projects as we speak. Always eager to promptly address the concerns raised at any time, Governor Abiodun in 2024, gave ultimatums to contractors handling roads and other projects across the state.

The Ogun State helmsman who also got elected as the Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum in 2024, ended the year tackling the road deficit in many parts of the state, including Akute, Agbara, Sango-Otta, Mowe, etc, with renewed vigour. He has promised to continue with that.

Already, following the firm instructions and inspection visits by the governor and other leading figures of his administration, as at the time of writing this piece, contractors were almost done laying asphalt along the Alagbole-Ajuwon road in Ifo Local Government Area. The road has suffered decades of neglect like many others across the state before Governor Abiodun recently took up the task of easing the suffering of the residents of the area.

Similarly, as I write this piece, asphalt laying commenced on the completed sections of the Ota-Abeokuta expressway. Like many other successful projects of this administration, the road will soon be commissioned. This is another promising keeping act of Governor Abiodun. It followed his decision to take over the rehabilitation of this critical federal road as part of his commitment to ease the harrowing troubles encountered daily by users of the road.

Also, the Atan-Lsada-Agbara road in Ogun Central Senatorial District is progressing speedily toward being delivered by Governor Abiodun. Already, the binder asphalt layer of the right-hand side of the road stretching from the Lagos-Badagry Expressway/Agbara junction to Atan on the Ota-Idi Iroko road, has been completed. As promised by the governor, construction activities has now shifted to the left-hand side of the road.

In Ogun East, a visit to the ongoing Tai Solarin Way road project in Ikenne town showed that extensive work has been done with asphalt laying already in progress. The road project is exemplifies the plan of Governor Abiodun to make all parts of the state, urban and rural, accessible as part of his drive to industrialise and develop the Ogun state rapidly. The project is expected to be completed and commissioned soon.

Asphalt has also been successfully laid along Liberty road in Oru town located in Ijebu North Local Government Area. The road, given its location is a testament to the governor’s determination to improve the quality of life in Ogun state through the provision of durable and well-constructed roads that connects communities and boost local economic activities. Similarly, work is ongoing on the Iperu-Ode-Sapade road in Remo North Local Government Area of the state.

Work on the vital Ijeja-Igbore link bridge in Abeokuta South Local Government is also progressing impressively. Residents of the two communities are full of praises for the governor for remembering them and working hard to link Ijeja and Igbore with the bridge. During a recent visit to the project site, the governor promised that the entire Ijeja-Igbore road will also be rehabilitated by his administration.

The ongoing construction work on Toyin-Giwa-Hercules road in Ifo constituency 2, aimed at addressing age-long issues of accessibility and flooding, is another great feat of the Dapo Abiodun administration. The construction includes road expansion, drainages, as well as surface repairs to ensure more durable roadway for the residents of the many communities in the area. The project is expected to be completed on schedule.

Governor Abiodun also approved the reconstruction of the 8.17kilometres Magboro-Makogi road in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area. The reconstruction project will also works to be done on the Magboro underbridge road. The project, when completed, will open up the area for more development

A couple of weeks ago, the governor commissioned the Ojodu Abiodun-Denro-Ishasi-Oluwakemi road in Ifo Local Government Area. This confirmed his unwavering dedication to leaving behind a more accessible and prosperous Ogun state. Determined to further reduce the road deficit in the area, Governor Abiodun openly announced that the Alagbole-Akute road and the Akute-Ijoko-Oke Aro road will soon be awarded for construction in phases. Commendations have been trailing these feats from within and outside the state.

Before now, Governor delivered the Ijebu-Ode-Epe road, another federal road. What is more? It is a road that evacuates people from the Lekki corridor in Lagos to other parts of Nigeria. As important as it is to both Ogun state and the country, that road was in total disuse prior to the coming of Governor Abiodun. According to the governor himself, he had to prioritise that road. Today, the road is a success story.

Similarly, Sagamu-Abeokuta road, the very road leading to the state capital, was in a terrible state for many years before the current administration came on board. The road became a death trap witnessing incessant and usually fatal road mishaps. People were dying. When he took over in 2019, Governor Abiodun prioritised the road, though it is another federal road, and turned it into what we all are proud of today.

Also onfirmed to have been completed by the Abiodun administration are; Owode-Siun road in Abeokuta, Owode-Ilaro road in Yewa South, Sagamu-Iperu-Ode road (Phase1), Ogijo road in Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode-Mojoda-Epe road, Abeokuta-Siun-Interchange road, Panseke-Adigbe road in Abeokuta, Molusi College road in Ijebu North, Ọba Erinwole road In Sagamu, Ikola-Navy-Osi Ota road in Ota, AIT-Raypower road in Ota.

In addition, not less than a hundred new road projects (five in each local government area), received approval from him recently.

Recognising and identifying with the rights of the citizens to demand for better living condition from the government, Governor Abiodun has promised to speed up the completion of the many ongoing road projects even in the New Year. According to him, the pace of the phenomenal strides being experienced in the state since his assumption of office is in fulfilment of his ‘Building Our Future Together Agenda’ and the ISEYA mantra of his government.

The good news is that the good people of Ogun are willing to patiently cooperate with their hard working governor as he strives, with renew vigour, to drastically reduce the infrastructure deficit he inherited.

No group can bring Sharia through backdoor, says Abiodun

Ogun State Government has warned against any attempt to establish a Sharia Court in the state.

The government, in a statement signed by Governor Dapo Abiodun, said Sharia Courts could not be legally constituted by individuals or groups without legal backing.

The government was reacting to a notice announcing the launch of a Sharia Court in the state.

The statement said Ogun State only recognised courts established through the legal framework of the Nigerian Constitution, adding that a Sharia Court did not form part of the legal framework operating in the state.

It reads: “Ogun State Government has noted the circulation of a digital notice announcing the launch of a Sharia Court in Ogun State.

“No law operating in Ogun State has established a Sharia Court, and Sharia law does not form part of the legal framework by which Ogun State Government administers and governs society.

“Ogun State Government upholds and protects the rights of individuals to practise the religion of their choice, or to subscribe to no religion, and recognises the freedom of individuals to apply their faith in their personal and private matters.

“However, this freedom does not extend to the formation of unauthorised assemblies or institutions. No individual or group is legally permitted to constitute a court or present themselves to the public as a court without legal backing. Those behind that notice have no legal backing.
