50 Cent refused to take a picture with me – Davido recounts

Grammy-nominated singer Davido has recounted his first encounter with 50 Cent and how he got snubbed by the American rapper.

Speaking on The Breakfast Club, Davido said he was 14 at the time and his family was in Las Vegas celebrating his older brother’s 21st birthday.

Davido, a fan of Lloyd Banks, took a picture with him.

However, when he approached 50 Cent for a photo, he was bluntly refused.

Years later, Davido reminded 50 Cent of the incident and the rapper responded with a nod to Davido’s current success, saying, “You are here now, right?”

He said: “The first time I ever saw 50 Cent, I was a kid in Vegas. I was like ‘can I have a picture’, he said, ‘No.’

“My brother was turning 21, my dad took everybody to Vegas but I was 14 so I can’t do nothing. They were doing the whole thing. I was just sitting in the lobby. I used to love Lloyd Banks, he was my favourite. So, I saw him and I went to him and took a picture with him. Then I saw 50 Cent, I went to him and said in Nigerian accent, ‘Wow! 50 Cent, I love you. Can I have a picture?’ He said, ‘No’ and just walked off.

“I told him about the incident years later when we met as colleagues and he said, ‘You are here now, right?”.

The two have since collaborated with 50 Cent bringing Davido on stage as a surprise guest performer at his Madison Square Garden show in New York.

They’re set to co-headline a concert in London later this year, alongside Mary J. Blige.

Afrobeat singer Davido has pledged to prioritise monogamy and family after a string of tumultuous relationships.

In an interview on The Breakfast Club podcast, Davido revealed he’s turning a new leaf, vowing fidelity and a renewed focus on family.

His decision to commit to monogamy stems from past experiences, including having five children with four different women.

He said: “I’m not cheating again. I don’t want wahala,” Davido said. “I have five kids with four women. I’d rather go and live how my other guys are living. Maybe because I’ve had bad experiences. Sometimes experience is the best teacher”.

Davido also spoke emotionally about his son, Ifeanyi, who passed away in 2022, drawing a touching connection to his newborn son.

“We’ve got twins now, a boy and a girl. The boy looks exactly like my son who passed. They act the same. Everything he used to do, he does,” he said.

Culture now bigger than industry ‘big three’ – Davido

Grammy-nominated singer Davido has spoken on the controversial topic surrounding the country’s acclaimed ‘Big 3’ in the music scene.

The trio, comprising Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy, has been credited with catapulting Afrobeats to global recognition.

However, Davido in an interview on ‘The Breakfast Club’ believes that the culture has grown beyond the trio, and the focus should shift from rivalry to unity to promote the genre’s growth.

“I don’t have a personal relationship with them. I did at some point in time. But I feel like the culture is just so big, and the conversation is bigger than the Big 3 right now — and that’s just the honest truth,” Davido said.

He points to the rise of new artists like Rema and Ayra Starr as evidence of the genre’s continued evolution.

Davido said: “There is Rema, Arya Starr, there are so many artiste for us to just make this thing about us. I feel like right now the three of us understand that it is bigger than us and whatever it takes for the culture to grow, whichever way we’re all for it.”.

While Davido didn’t rule out the possibility of a collaborative record between the three global stars, he cited behind-the-scenes tensions as a potential obstacle.

He, however expressed openness to working together for the greater good of Afrobeats.

“I mean it is not impossible, but I feel like people around us wouldn’t want that to happen. Some people make money off us not being cool, I guess, but with me, there have been situations where we’ve all been cool,”he added.

Grammy-nominated singer Davido has opened up about his relationship with Tiwa Savage, describing her as “my sister for life” despite their public fallout.

In an interview on The Breakfast Club, Davido emphasised their close bond, likening their disagreements to typical sibling squabbles.

He reassured fans that he still cares deeply for Tiwa and her child, considering them family.

“We used to stay in the same house. The situation with Tiwa was personal; she was a good friend to Sophia Momodu. Tiwa Savage is my sister for life. She changed the game for females. I love her and her child, we are family. Our fight is just like a brother and sister’s fight. She did reach out. I will never allow anything to happen to her,” Davido shared.

The tension between them began when Tiwa posted a photo with Sophia Momodu, Davido’s children’s mother, leading to an alleged exchange of messages from Davido’s management.
