  • Why Davido can’t stay in camp

The highpoint of the Swearing-In of the 2018 NYSC Batch B Stream II corps members Thursday last week would have been the colourful presentation by the cultural troupe – if Davido had not shown up.

But the 25 year-old hiphop sensation showed up at the Iyana Ipaja camp and everything changed.

No one quite noticed when the white Mercedes Benz car with plate number PF 413-S. drove about 200 metres from the gate and packed behind the canopy that accommodated the NYSC camp officials and visitors during the ceremony.

But when it was ready to be noticed, it suddenly became visible and though one could hardly see through its dark tinted glasses, it was clear its occupants were ready to come out.

The corps members suddenly became aware that David Adeleke had arrived. They had been expecting him. We, journalists, too. We were just a few metres from where the car was packed. We had just finished interviewing the Lagos State NYSC Coordinator, Prince Mohammed Momoh – questioning why he did not ensure Davido was in camp. We were about to settle for his explanation that he had been smuggled in and out to avoid distraction when the masquerade revealed himself. Our story automatically changed.

Shouts of “Davido”, “O-B-O”, and “Platoon Nine” soon rent the air and the car was surrounded by Mobile phone bearing corps members who had to provide concrete evidence to show friends and family that Davido was indeed in camp with them.

It was my first time seeing a celebrity being mobbed live. His private bodyguards could not do the job alone. The soldiers, police, man-o-war and other camp officials all joined in the Herculean task of getting him from the car into the State Coordinator’s office.

In the office, there was some confusion — likely compounded by the noise the corps members who stood without behind every available windows looking to the office were making.  It was almost impossible to hear or say anything audible above the din.  My recording of our short interview with him was hardly useful.  I could hear nothing.

Davido was there to sign the NYSC oath of allegiance and speak with the press. But it also inadvertently provided the officials and security personnel a chance to take pictures on their mobile phones.

However, they also had to think of how he was going to get out easier than he got in.

Someone suggested they blow the beagle which is used to assembly all corps members on the parade ground. It worked.  On the parade ground, the soldiers had better control of them and got them to sit down on the ground.

A stage was first set before the corps members which made them to think Davido may perform for them. But he refused to mount it. When he got the microphone, he spoke instead, urging them to be their best.  He said he wanted to take pictures with the corps members.  I got the feeling he was not allowed to be as free as he wanted. He had to leave afterwards.  This time, there was no hiding his departure.  Many corps members left the parade ground in defiance to the soldiers and ran after his car. He threw cash in the air on the way out and some of his ‘pursuers’ got distracted and scrambled for the money instead.

If there had been plans to get Davido to stay in camp, like the regular corps members, I am sure that day’s experience must have ended it.  For me, it cleared all thoughts that the NYSC officials were lying about his influence and the level of distraction his presence caused on camp.

It would have been good if he could participate in camp life like others – wake up by the beagle, go for PT (Physical Training); participate in the endurance trek; march, do man-o-war activities and the like.  But I do not think the NYSC Camp is secure enough for that.  Its location in a densely populated community close to Iyana Ipaja  bus stop makes it vulnerable to invasion from outsiders, who tried to get in when they learnt of his presence.  It would have been a security breach.  I understand if the NYSC officials had no choice but give him a long exeat to excuse him from the camp.

  • I joined Black Axe to meet Davido, says suspect

A 25-year-old suspected member of the Black Axe cult said he was lured into the group with promises that he would meet music star David Adeleke alias Davido.

Tobi Adegoke who said he was an upcoming music artist, said he believed meeting Davido would have helped his music career boom.

Adegoke was among 27 suspected cultists arrested from various parts of Lagos and paraded by Police Commissioner Imohimi Edgal on Wednesday.

He said: “I am an Aiye member (Black Axe). I have been in the cult for about two years. I was told that Davido was a member and if I joined, I will be able to meet him.

“It was the guy who initiated me that said so. He said he worked for Davido and that it will be easy access. But since I joined, I have not met Davido. They told me I’ll become a very popular musician but see where I am now.

“I am renouncing my membership of Aiye. I will never belong to any cult again. They should look at my face very well. They will never see me in their midst again.

“I lived at Oniru in Lekki. I used to be a domestic help. Since I joined, I have not done anything bad. I habe not killed anybody. I just wanted to be a famous musician.

Urging other aspiring musicians to be patient, Adegoke said he regretted being on the fast lane, adding that if he had remained steadfast, he would not have landed into trouble.

Another suspect, Biodun Alade, 22, said he joined his own group about four months ago, adding that the teardrop tattoo on his left eye was not a cult symbol.

However, several others denied being cultists, insisting they were arrested during random raids carried out by policemen in their neighbourhoods.

  • DAVIDO: 10 THINGS TO EXPECT FROM SINGER’S NYSC ORIENTATION

FOR a celebrity millionaire like David Adeleke, aka Davido, a three-week orientation in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) camp is a walk in the park.

Indications started on Thursday when the pop singer arrived the Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos orientation camp like royalty, thus one can safely speculate 10 regular NYSC camp experiences that will elude the singer, as a post graduate Nigerian youth.

    1. With the option available to youth corps members serving in Lagos to report to camp from home, it is obvious Davido will not domicile in camp for the duration of the exercise.
    2. This is understandable considering that the superstar desires some level of privacy and security, as he was almost mobbed by the ecstatic crowd on Thursday. Who knows, a sympathizer of one of his baby mamas may be among the crowd, who may want to harm the singer.
    3. If Davido appears for any of the early morning parades, drilling exercises, obstacles and endurance treks, it would only be for photo ops, just as in the case of the opening day.
    4. Davido is sure to add fun to this year’s camp exercise by performing free-of-charge to his camp mates during some of the social activities.
    5. The military personnel will no doubt show a soft spot for the singer in their supposed drilling exercise, and they are most likely to enjoy his philanthropy.
    6. It is certain that Davido does not need the scheme’s bicycle allowance for anything. One lucky person on camp stands to be gifted that money; that is if the singer would not choose to make a show by flinging the naira notes into a choice crowd.
    7. What does Davido need the camp foods for? For sure, he would not be caught among the crowd queuing for a bowl of ogi (palp) and akara (bean cake); beans and some ridiculous loaf of bread or the usual rice ‘concoction’.
    8. Davido will not be a part of the Mammy Market experience. While his peers will be there to eat and drink at their leisure, he will probably be at some eyebrow clubs chilling with his class.
    9. Three weeks is too long for Davido, a rave-of-the-moment singer to undergo the camp routine. While his colleagues are in camp, he is likely to be performing at one show within or outside the country.
    10. Davido will be a distraction to the normal activities of the camp. This will make the job of the camp officials more difficult. Therefore, it will be a relief to the authority if he plays truancy. Recall that on Thursday, officials struggled to stop outsiders from scaling the fence into the camp.
  • Davido to Nigerian youths: Tie up every loose ends!

*signs up for National Youth service Corps

Nigeria’s music sensation David Adeleke otherwise called Davido may have sent a direct advise to Nigerian youths to put their records right as they undertake the journey of life.

The Music graduate who has made a huge career of his passion registered for the mandatory one year National Youth Service corps on Tuesday while indirectly urging the Nigerian youth not to take anything for granted. Otondo OBO … ?? #Nysc .. Tying up  every loose end!” The 25 year old dished out on his twitter handle @iam_Davido

The twit was followed by a picture of the musical idol in NYSC Uniform as he sat on one of his eye popping rides.

Davido who only recently celebrated the arrival of his private jet will no doubt inspire many academically inclined youths in the country with his decision to key into the mandatory one year service three years after bagging a bachelors degree in Music.

Davido graduated from Babcock University, Ilisan- Remo, Ogun State, in 2015 after completing his course in music. His graduation ceremony it will be recalled attracted crème dela crème of the society including respected producer of popular track ‘Doro buchi’ done in collaboration with high flying female artist Tiwa Savage.

Davido who has been hailed by some of his fans for taking the step will expectedly partake in all the known sporting activities in camp viz endurance trek, inter platoon football competition, tug of war to mention just  few.  There are strong indications that while in camp Davido may be drafted to play a role in the Orientation Broadcasting Service (OBS) which aside from passing information/announcement to corps members in camp also conducts live interviews and request shows.

The compulsory one year National Service for graduates in the country was introduced in 1973 under the regime of under General Yakubu Gowon.

Recall that Davido featured in the World Cup theme song for Super Eagles ahead of the last world cup in Russia in the form of video with commercial soft drink company pepsi.  The video which became instant hit also featured other pop stars like Wizkid and Tiwa Savage alongside midfield maestro Jay Jay Okocha and Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi.

  • Music star, Davido, is Infinix’s ambassador

Original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Infinix Mobility, said it has signed one of Africa’s most prolific music artiste, Davido, as its brand ambassador. The firm said it is a demonstration of its commitment to further bridge the gap between itself as a smartphone brand and its youthful target audience,

The OEM, in a statement, said both brands cater to a young audience and are trendsetters, adding that both brands also draw inspiration from their fans and inspire the future, a dream partnership structured to propel both brands to new heights.

The story of Infinix and Davido coming together can be likened to a story of a wunderkind whom after global acknowledgement of his potentials is expected to fail but it doesn’t just seem to happen.

“We have all heard of different ways brand ambassadors have shown their commitment and loyalty to a brand’s course such as wearing branded outfits, attending events orchestrated by the brand and others which are mostly stated in clauses within the contractual agreement between both parties but how about taking it to the extreme such as resuming a 9-5 fulltime job at the brand’s head office?

“What we termed as impossible has come to fruition as what seemed like a normal day at 3C HUB on July 25, 2018 turned out to be the fateful day unsuspecting fans would see Davido casually walk into the store, move to the Infinix Mobility stand and purchase a brand new Infinix Note 5 device.

“The sheer astonishment of that sight delighted staff and fans as they all watched Davido carefully unbox a brand-new Note 5 smartphone, power it on and speak on all the unique features of the “Beyond Intelligent” smartphone which range from the 18:9 Infinity display screen, 4500mAh battery that can last 3 days on a single charge to the A.I Camera and Google A.I Voice Assistant that performs tasks seamlessly,” the firm explained in a statement.

Davido, it said, then proceeded to take selfies with the fans present and in a seemingly hilarious fashion assured everyone that he would be a regular face at the store even though most might have doubted the genuineness of his comments.

“While we may not be able validate if truly superstar music artiste, Davido has resumed a fulltime job reporting at Infinix Mobility authorised retail store every weekday or the modalities that surround Davido’s supposed work related habitual appearances. One thing is an uncontested fact at this point. Davido would stop at nothing to reaffirm his allegiance to Infinix Mobility as being a brand ambassador is on its own a fulltime job,” the OEM said.
