  • Angry husband guns down in-law in Delta over wife’s alleged infidelity

An angry husband has reportedly shot dead his brother in-law over his wife’s infidelity with his brother simply identified as Pius, in Amukpe, Sapele council area of Delta state.

The husband, whose name was still not known as at the time of filing this report, is currently at large, The Nation learnt.

The incident has also led to the burning of two houses, one belonging to the deceased and the other of the indicted brother.

According to reports, the wife had earlier confessed to having sexual intercourse with her husband’s biological brother, Pius.

In anger, the husband took his gun and went to the late brother in-law’s residence where a confrontation which led to the shooting, ensued between the duo.

The deceased man allegedly challenged his armed in-law, who shot him in his left eye. He was said to have died instantly.

The Nation further gathered that members of the wife’s family marched down to Pius’ residence and set it ablaze.

However, the fleeing husband’s family retaliated by razing down the late man’s house.

Witnesses claimed that the prompt intervention of security operatives saved the situation from escalating.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command has confirmed the development, stating that a manhunt has begun for the runaway husband.

The Commissioner of Police, Adeyinka Adeleke, who spoke via mobile phone said “I heard of it. That man shot his brother in-law dead at Amukpe in Sapele because they said his wife was sleeping with his brother. And so, they went to burn down his brother’s house and in turn, they burnt down the in-law’s house. We are looking for the man.”

  • Policemen detained over alleged role in woman’s death

Three policemen, including an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), are being detained at the Warri Area Command of the Delta State Police Command over their alleged role in the death of a woman.

The Nation gathered that the policemen, on July 20, at about 7:30pm, stopped the deceased, Mrs. Ugochukwu Grace Dabo, who was driving home in a Toyota Sienna Space Bus registered as AGL 822 EY, near Igbiki junction, Ovwian/Aladja area of Udu Local Government.

Sources said during interrogation by the patrolling policemen, the deceased was unable to produce the requested tinted glass permit, although other papers were intact, leading to the impounding of the vehicle. They allegedly left the deceased on the spot and drove off.

“At about 9pm, a man brought the body of the deceased to Ovwian Police Station to report the killing of his wife by gunmen, after she was allegedly abandoned on the road by policemen on patrol, who had seized her car from her.

“Immediately the man saw the DPO and narrated the matter, he (DPO) called for the arrest of the officers who had been on patrol in the area because, according to him, they abandoned their duty post, which led to the death of the woman. He has transferred them to the Area Command (Warri). The DPO took the body to the mortuary that night. He was very furious that he had just spent six days at the station and some officers had already shown lack of professionalism,” a source said.

Confirming the development and the steps being taken by the state command, spokesperson Onome Onowakpoyeya, in a statement on Tuesday, said reports so far gathered showed that the deceased was killed by a gang of three at large, adding that Police Commissioner Adeyinka Adeleke had promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

But her 11-year-old daughter survived the attack and escaped unhurt. She narrated how her mother was killed by men of the underworld, who are yet to be arrested.

“The police commissioner regrets the unfortunate incident leading to the death of the deceased and commiserates with her family. He assures the public, particularly the bereaved family, of the commitment of the police to investigate the role played by the officers and men in the incident and ensure the arrest of the fleeing robbers,” the statement said.

  • Two in police custody for raping minors in Delta

Two unnamed suspected rapists, both who are 58 and 52 years of age, respectively, have been arrested by the Delta state police command for defiling minors.
The alleged rape cases, which were recorded in Eku, Ethiope East council area, on June 9, and Ovwian/Aladja, Udu council area on June 27; the first being the rape of a 10-year old and the other, being rape of a two-year old, had raised the alarm with state police command, which had called on parents for more vigilance on their children.
Announcing the arrests in a statement issued circulated on Sunday, the spokesperson of the Delta state police command, DSP Onome Onowakpoyeya, echoed the call by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adeyinka Adeleke, to parents to watch over their children against sex predators in their neighbourhoods.

  • Murder of teenager: Police arrest local chief, boyfriend in Delta

The Delta state police command says it has arrested two persons, including a prominent Abraka chief, in connection with the reported murder of an 18-year old girl, Favour Ogheneyenrowho.

It would be recalled that the corpse of Ogheneyenrowho had been found tied up in a ‘Ghana-must-go’ bag and dropped at a refuse dump site behind Ozoro Park in Abraka on the June 18.

The police had been on the trail of a suspect, believed to be Ogheneyenrowho’s boyfriend, with whom he was last seen by her older sister, who identified herself as Maureen Sunday. The name of the suspect was still unknown as at the time the corpse of the victim was found.

However, the police, in a statement issued and circulated by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Delta State police command, DSP Onome Onowakpoyeya, said two suspects, including one Henry Ikechukwu, a 32-year old, believed to be the boyfriend the deceased was last seen with, and an unnamed ‘prominent’ chief in Abraka.

“The said chief has also been arrested and the two suspects are presently in Police custody pending investigation. They will soon appear in court immediately after the completion of the ongoing Police investigation”, the statement said.

  • This burden is too heavy – Parents of two pupils swept off by flood

Among residents of Alibioba community in Ika South Local Government Area of Delta State, the slightest hint of rain is a source of anxiety and great trepidation.

Surely, the residents are aware of the many benefits associated with plentiful rain to an agrarian community like theirs, but their dread stems largely from the dangers posed by a carvenous gully bisecting the entire community.

Alibioba community hugs the slopes at a midway point between Agbor-Obi and Orogodo River along the ever busy Benin-Onitsha Expressway.

The main road that leads into the community is muddy, winding, untarred and riddled with gully-like potholes.

However, this glaring infrastructural deficit is the least of Alibioba’s problem a more pressing and immediate danger is that posed by surging floodwaters in the community which routinely claim lives when it rains.

To further heighten the fears of parents, their children of school age attending Alibioba Primary School and Agbor Technical College daily commute over the rickety makeshift foot bridges placed at strategic points over a 100-feet deep gully.

Judging from the poor quality of materials used in constructing the bridges, residents of this community, including children, are daily flirting with death.

Another source of fear gripping parent is the proximity of Alibioba Primary School’s entrance to the gully. This, The Nation gathered, had prompted some parents to withdraw their children from the school.

Last week, their fears came to pass as floods swept away two teenage brothers, Testimony Okwuokenye (15) and Godwin Okwuokenye (11) following a downpour.

Testimony was a JSS 1 student of Agbor Technical College, while his younger sibling was a Primary 5 pupil of Alibioba Primary School whose fences were close to the gully.

According to community sources, the flood had claimed many lives with many injured in the last five years.

The grieving couple sat close to each other on two wooden benches at the veranda of their bungalow on a cold, wet morning. They were being consoled by a sympathiser; they were obviously unable to make sense of the tragedy that has just befallen them.

The father of the victims, Pastor Godday Okwuokenye, who is a minister of a Pentecostal church in Agbor, said he had a premonition of the tragedy two months earlier, adding that he embarked on prayer sessions for divine intervention.

According to him, he said: “About two months back while in a dream on my way to church, my Bible and sword fell into the gully, but I dived into the raging water and retrieved them. When I woke up, we prayed about it only for this to happen.”

Speaking further, “That day, Thursday, I went to our garden with my children, Testimony and Godwin. When we discovered that the weather was changing, threatening to rain, we rushed home. When we got home, it was already drizzling and I instructed them to place basins to harvest rain water for domestic use.

“Then, I went into my room, prayed and decided to lie down on the bed. That was how I slept off. A few minutes later, I heard some knocks on the door and when I opened, the boy, who was knocking said to me: “Sir, are you the father of Testimony? I said “Yes”. Then, he said flood hadcarried both of them.

“He said Godwin, my younger son, fell into the gutter and Testimony, the elder one, in a bid to rescue him, dived in, but the flood swept away.

“When I heard this, I quickly rushed out to the scene. But at Uromi Junction axis, I found a crowd of rescue team who had rescued one of them.  I quickly rushed him to the hospital because he was still warm; but doctors at the Central Hospital, Agbor, confirmed that he was already dead.

“The second boy was discovered this morning (penultimate Friday) and he was also already dead.”

His wife, Mrs Abundance Okwuokenye, appealed to the government at all levels to urgently solve the problem the gully poses to the community.

Responding to a question, Mrs Okwuokenye, said: “We had a pastors wives retreat at the Church of God Mission Headquarters in Benin- City when the incident occurred. I was brought back to Agbor where this sad news was broken to me. To say I am devastated is an understatement. I am trying to gather the pieces of my shattered life together. I am not coping. Things can never be the same again. These boys often stayed in our bedroom late every night before they went to bed. Every morning, we usually had morning prayer session together, but now we are doing it without them. I am not coping. No mother should be allowed to go through this pain that I am passing through because of a gully.”

Continuing, she said: “I am begging government to do something, not just when they like; but to pay  immediate attention to solving the problem. How did you feel when you crossed that makeshift bridge on your way here? Yet, that was where our children crossed everyday on their to school. The schools are at risk. If they do not come immediately to our aid, what happened to me will reoccur. This gully is taking the lives of our children; we cannot take this any longer.”

Apart from the threat to lives, homes near the gully are in dread of it. Many nervous landlords are in despair seeing their homes perched precariously on the edge of the gully.

Sunday Ofiri, 28, lives in a twin apartment flat with his aged parents on the edge of the gully.

He said his family packed into the house eight years ago. He fears that with the relentless widening of the gully, his father’s house will soon as disappear into the gully.

As a result, Ofiri said his family have since moved to a rented apartment and only make short visits to the house. He said all their tenants have left.

He said: “This gully erosion menace is a big blow to us. When we packed in, the vehicle that brought our belongings actually parked on the gully, meaning that this gully did not exist eight years ago. We have abandoned this home. We only come here once in a while and stay only for one week. During the rains, we barely live here. Our children are permanently locked inside the house for fear of falling into the gully”.

He appealed to the government for help as many landlords are retirees who built their homes during their active years.

The chairman of the community’s Landlords Association, Chukwuyem Odia, said the community is in “deep pain” over the loss of ” two of their sons” and appealed for intervention from the Delta State government and federal authorities.

His words: “We are in great pain because of this gully erosion. We have been to the local government council; they say it is beyond them. We call on government, both at state and federal levels, to come to our aid. There is a primary school behind us; most parents have withdrawn their children from the school. Last week, we lost two sons; we are in deep pain.”

He said despite assurances from the lawmaker representing Ika South, Hon. Festus Okoh, nothing has been done to alleviate their problems, but he expressed optimism that the state government will intervene.

The Chief Inspector of Education, Ika South, Mr Ariwojo Ezeh, who was on a condolence visit to the family with an entourage, expressed shock at the death of the boys.

His words: “It is shocking news and that is why we are here to commiserate with the family. The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education exists only because of children. So, we are deeply pained. This is unfortunate; we feel sad”.

Responding to a question on the proximity of the primary school to the gully, he said: “Having seen the proximity of the school to the gully, I will have to report to my bosses in Asaba.”

“We educate school heads on the need to take issues of flooding and security seriously whether they are in the curriculum or not as these are practical realities of life, “he said.

He said an enlightenment campaign was on to educate school heads on the need to take issues like flooding and security seriously

  •  Forgery allegation against me frivolous, ill-motivated, says Rep

THE member of the House of Representatives representing Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency in Delta State, Mr. Nicholas Mutu, has reacted to allegations of forgery and impersonation leveled against him by Mr. Collins Eselemo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the area in the February 2019 general election.

Mutu, who won the election on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), described the allegations as frivolous and ill-motivated, adding that they were aimed at damaging his hard-earned reputation.

The conventional and social media have been awash lately with allegations of certificate forgery and impersonation against Mutu by his main opponent in the election.

But Mutu, in a statement issued by his Media Adviser, Mr. Ebitimi Ogbomah, said the allegations bordering on certificate forgery and impersonation had been “rubbished by the responses of the appropriate authorities, including all the schools he (Mutu) attended and the National Assembly, where he had been a member since 1999, courtesy of the good people of Bomadi/Patani Federal Constituency.”

On the allegation that Mutu’s West African Examinations Council ((WAEC) Ordinary Level School Certificate/General Certificate of Education (GCE), issued by the management of Rivers State School of Basic Studies, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, now known as Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, was fake, Ogbomah said the letter written by the Registrar of the institute, Mr. Chris Woke, on the matter had cleared Mutu of any wrongdoing.

In the letter, he said, Woke confirmed that the school was not only recognised but was a centre for WAEC and GCE in 1986 when Mutu sat for the examination.

Woke, who attached the certified copies of the master list/computer printout of candidates who sat for the examination in the centre in 1986, said Mutu was one of the candidates, with 21648/094 as his examination number.

Woke in the letter, which was sequel to an enquiry made by Mutu’s solicitors, stated: “I write to confirm that the former Rivers State School of Basic Studies, Rumuola, Port Harcourt (now Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic), was a recognised school and centre for West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Ordinary Level School Certificate/General Certificate of Education (GCE) Examinations as at May/June 1986.

“The then Rivers State School of Basic Studies, Port Harcourt, functioned as a recognised school/centre for May/June WAEC/GCE Examinations from 1977 to June 1987 and continued with November/December General Certificate of Education(GCE) up to 1990 before it was discontinued, following the introduction of the 6-3-3-4 education system in Nigeria.

“The master list/computer printout of the candidate, 21648/094, Mutu Nicholas Eboma, amongst other candidates that sat for the May/June Examinations in 1986, is certified, attached hereto and marked as Annexure 1”

“The former school of Basic Studies established in 1977 by the Rivers State Government was changed to Rivers State College of Arts and Science in 1991 (vide Annexure 2), Port Harcourt Polytechnic in 2016 (vide Annexure 3) and now Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic Rumuola, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.”

Ogbomah also said the degree certificate awarded to Mutu by St. Clements University was authentic and genuine, adding that contrary to Eselemo’s claim, his boss was awarded a Bachelor of Arts and not Bachelor of Science degree in Business Organisation by the reputable institution.

He said that instead of Eselemo visiting the website of the school or write to it for clarification on the genuineness of the certificate in question, he opted to assassinate Mutu’s character and smear his good image.

“For the records, St. Clements University Certificate is genuine and anybody can go to the university’s website, write or visit the school to confirm that Hon. Mutu Nicholas indeed obtained his degree from the school,”’ he added.

On the allegation that Mutu used a fake name in the National Assembly from 1999 to 2003, Ogbomah said the records were available on the National Assembly’s website for verification.

He said: “We expected the petitioner to visit the National Assembly Website or write the National Assembly, but he decided to rely on a faceless magazine report.

“But to set the record straight, it is Hon. Nicholas Mutu’s profile that has been in the National Assembly website from 1999 till date.

“It is also on record that Hon. Nicholas Mutu has won all his elections from 1999 till date and certificate of return has always been issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in his name, with which he does his documentation in the National Assembly at all times.

“It is worthy of note that nobody can do his or her documentation in the National Assembly and be sworn-in without a certificate of return.”

Ogbomah stated further that “to demonstrate that Eselemo is on campaign of calumny to smear my boss, he also alleged that the Hon. Mutu played pranks in his age declaration. This is arrant nonsense.

“This is the true account: Hon Mutu’s father did his age declaration with his thumbprint. Coincidentally, his elder brother bears the same name as his father. While his father name was Agbede Mutu Senior, his elder brother’s name is Agbede Mutu Junior.

“Let Collins Eselemo also tell us the name of Hon. Mutu’s father since he now knows him better than his son. Let Collins Eselemo also tell us whether the thumbprint is that of Hon. Nicholas Mutu’s elder brother and whether his elder brother has the same thumbprint as his father.

“And we ask also if it is possible for the elder brother to have the same thumbprint as his father. The answer is no.”
