Oborevwori moves to check rising house rents in Asaba

Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, has assured that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s six-lane Asaba Waterfront City project will not only transform the state capital’s landscape but also ease the pressure of skyrocketing house rents in Asaba.

Speaking during an inspection tour of the project yesterday, Izeze explained that the road, being executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Delta State Government and North China Construction Company, would open up the Waterfront City and boost housing supply in the capital.

“With projects like this, simple economics will come into play as supply increases, demand pressure will ease, and rents will crash. We believe this will solve the problem of outrageous house rents in Asaba,” the Commissioner stated.

He added that the project would also help decongest the already overcrowded city centre while curbing the menace of illegal and temporary structures that had previously taken over the area.

“This place, about four years ago, was already turning into a shanty where all kinds of characters were putting up illegal structures. With this project, we are creating a completely new city that will ease the pressure on Asaba,” Izeze said.

On the quality of work done, the Works Commissioner expressed satisfaction with progress on the six-lane carriageway, which was first awarded by the previous administration but gained full momentum under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

“I have inspected this road about four times now, and I can say the quality of the structural work is reasonably good. Now that they are at the asphalting stage, I expect them to strictly adhere to the Bill of Engineering Measurement and Evaluation, particularly with the thickness and quality of asphalt applied,” he noted.

Izeze further commended the aesthetics of the project, describing it as “quite attractive to the eyes,” and urged the contractors to take advantage of the dry season to complete both the binder and friction courses so the road can be delivered for use.

The visit, initiated by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, is part of his administration’s drive to diversify the economy, promote food security, and create sustainable jobs for Deltans.

During the working tour, the delegation engaged with the ranch’s management, inspected facilities, and held discussions on possible areas of collaboration.

He said his administration remained focused on creating an enabling environment for investors, supporting local farmers, and leveraging international expertise to drive growth.

Oborevwori releases N10bn to clear backlog of pension in Delta

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has approved the immediate release of N10 billion to clear outstanding pension arrears owed to retirees in the state.

The governor disclosed this on Tuesday during a meeting with the Pension Board, led by Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, Chairman of the Bureau of State Pensions, and Comrade Anthony Ozu Osanekwu, State Chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees.

Oborevwori said he convened the meeting to address pressing issues concerning the welfare of retirees, including payment of backlogs and migration challenges under the contributory pension scheme.

Highlighting the strides of his administration, the Governor stated that a total of N36.4 billion had been paid in pensions, disclosing that N1.4 billion was released monthly for pension payments since he assumed office.

He emphasised that the state had not defaulted in meeting its monthly pension obligations under his watch.

However, Oborevwori noted that the arrears, which predated his administration, must be urgently tackled. “Our retirees are men and women who gave their best years in service to the state. It is only just that they receive what is due to them, and under my watch, their welfare will remain top priority,” he assured.

To guarantee accountability, the Governor announced the constitution of an oversight team to supervise the implementation of the N10bn release, stressing that transparency would be strictly upheld.

The gesture, he said, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of senior citizens who had laboured in the service of Delta State.

In his remarks, Chairman of the Bureau for State Pension, Sir Edwin Ogidi-Gbegbaje, described the Governor’s announcement as a “pleasant surprise,” assuring him that the N10bn release would serve as a huge relief to retirees.

He further pledged that the funds would be used exclusively for pension payments, stressing that the system was programmed to ensure transparency and accountability.

Fielding questions from journalists, the State Chairman of the Association of Contributory Retirees, Comrade Anthony Ozu Osanekwu, expressed appreciation to the Governor for what he described as an unexpected and magnanimous gesture.

“You took us unawares; what we were expecting was far less than the N10bn you just approved,” Osanekwu said. “I am elated, and I know that when pensioners across the state hear this news, they will be very happy.”

Delta police bust notorious kidnap gang, recover 247 rounds of live ammunition

In compliance with the directives of the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, on intelligence-led operations and proactive policing, the command said it has recorded significant operational success in dismantling a high-profile criminal syndicate with cross-border operations across Delta and Edo states.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command, Superintendent of Police (SP) Bright Edafe, said on Thursday that in response to a series of intelligence reports regarding a planned abduction of high-profile individuals in Sapele, Oghara, and surrounding areas of the state, the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT) executed a strategic operation against a notorious criminal syndicate led by Owei Abebo, alias Adusa.

He said this suspect had been under surveillance since 2021.

The PPRO said on July 19, 2025, in the early hours, operatives led by ASP Julius Robinson arrested Peter Benson, a 35-year-old suspect from Kwale in the Ndokwa Local Government Area of the state.

Benson is believed to be a spiritual herbalist involved in ritual preparations for the criminal gang.

Edafe said following intensive interrogation, Benson provided information that led the operatives to Joseph Saniyo, a 63-year-old from Ajakorama Community in Ovia South-West LGA, Edo State.

He said Saniyo was identified as the primary spiritualist for the syndicate and was found in possession of three live tortoises and various fetish items used in criminal rituals.

The spokesman said acting on leads from Benson and Saniyo, CP-SAT operatives proceeded to Oghara, where they successfully apprehended the ring leader, Owei Abebo (42), along with his accomplices: Ebi Maye (41) from Poloborbor Community, Warri North LGA, Delta State and Happy Obegha (39) from Aakoroma Community, Ovia North-East LGA, Edo State

He said during a thorough search of their hideouts, the operatives recovered 247 rounds of live ammunition for a Submachine Gun (SMG).

He said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects were plotting coordinated kidnappings across Sapele and Oghara, which were successfully thwarted following their arrest.

He asserted that this operation demonstrated a proactive approach by law enforcement to dismantle a criminal syndicate and prevent potential kidnappings, ensuring the safety of high-profile individuals in the affected regions.

“Further investigations are ongoing to uncover additional details and potential accomplices linked to the syndicate,” Edafe said.

In another operation, the spokesman said the command, in a combined effort with the Nigerian Army, recorded a significant breakthrough in the fight against Internet fraud and other cyber-related offences.

Edafe said on July 21 2025, at about 17:45 hours, operatives of Ekpan Division, acting on credible intelligence in a combined effort with the Nigerian Army, carried out a coordinated raid on a location within Post Housing Estate, Effurun, where suspected Internet fraud and terrorism financing activities were taking place.

He said the operation resulted in the arrest of one Kelvin Odini, aged 33, and one hundred and eighty-three (183) others engaged in online fraud-related activities.

Edafe stated, “Items recovered from the suspects include: Two hundred and seventy-three (273) assorted laptops, Ninety-seven (97) assorted smartphones, one (1) iPad, one (1) table phone, nine (9) laptop chargers, and two (2) Wi-Fi routers.

“All suspects and exhibits have been taken into custody as investigations intensify to unravel the extent of their operations and apprehend other accomplices.

“The Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, commends the gallant officers involved in these operations for their professionalism, bravery, and swift response to credible intelligence.

“He reiterates the command’s readiness to intensify intelligence operations, surveillance, and community engagement to ensure that Delta State remains uninhabitable for criminal syndicates and individuals engaged in activities inimical to peace and development.”

Mother of 18-yr-old girl trafficked to Ghana seeks govt’s help

A mother in Effurun, Delta State, is pleading with the government and relevant agencies to rescue her 18-year-old daughter, who was trafficked to Ghana under the guise of securing a better job.

The victim, whose identity is being withheld, was reportedly lured by a neighbour and has since been forced into prostitution.

The Nation gathered that the  incident occurred on March 23, 2025, raising fears of an active human trafficking ring targeting young girls in the area.

Family members, particularly the victim’s 51-year-old mother, Victoria, are devastated by the development.

The girl, before her disappearance, worked shifts at a restaurant along Airport Road in Effurun.

According to relatives, alarm bells rang when calls to the teenager’s phone went unanswered and the line was eventually switched off. After two days with no word, Victoria visited her daughter’s workplace and was told she hadn’t reported for duty in three days. Her search later led to the discovery that her daughter and a 19-year-old friend had both gone missing.

It was eventually uncovered that both girls had been trafficked together.

In an emotional interview with The Nation, Victoria said her daughter contacted her four days after leaving home, crying and begging to be rescued. However, the family is financially incapable of facilitating her return.

Victoria said her husband works as a driver, while she has been unable to earn an income due to the emotional toll of the situation.

She is now calling on the Nigerian government, non-governmental organisations, and security agencies to help bring her daughter back home and ensure justice is served.

“I need people to help me bring her back because she is not even sound as she is there. When she called the last time, she said ‘mummy, I am not fine. I am not fine;’ that she is tired, but she cannot leave there on her own.”

Responding to questions, the mother said: “Yes, she is still being used for prostitution, that was the purpose they were taken there.

When she called initially, we asked her where she was and she told us she was in Ghana.

“We asked how it happened and she said it was through an agent that promised to give them (the victim and her friend) a job. But when they got there, they realised the kind of job and she cannot come back on her own. She said she could not return on her own because they are under watch at the place. And that the woman in charge is very influential

“It’s because of lack of money that we have not being able to find another way to bring her back,” she added.

Asked if the suspect had been identified, the mother said: “We know the neighbour, but he ran away like two months ago. His name is Prince Ogaga. He is from Uvwie. We lived in their compound, that’s where it happened.

“We reported to the Police. It was the police that came to look for him when he escaped. Police did not do anything again. We were asked to bring his photograph so that he will be declared wanted. But we could not get it. He should be 40 years and above…

We know him as a house agent in the area, so whether he has been doing this, I don’t know,” she stated.

Asked if her daughter showed signs of apprehension prior to her leaving, the 51 year old lady stated: “I didn’t notice anything different before she left. Where she was working, she worked shifts, one day on, one day off. The day she was off, I was not at home”.

Further asked on efforts to get back the victim, who is her first child and only daughter, Victoria said a church member who is a Ghanaian planned on travelling home to Ghana, and had promised to connect with her.

Meanwhile, sources at the victim’s former workplace described her as lively and cool-headed during her time there, when The Nation visited, Tuesday.

However, they disclosed that they thought she had gone for an appendicitis surgery when she didn’t turn up for days.

“Before she stopped coming, she was complaining about appendix. She said it wasn’t due for surgery. On several occasions she had to leave work because of the pain, so when we didn’t see her, we thought she had gone for the operation. She used to work at the snacks section. She didn’t even drop her uniform. But we later heard that she had travelled to Dubai. She must have been influenced by friends,” one of her ex-colleagues asserted.

When contacted on the issue, the Pollice Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the parents should petition the Inspector General of Police, as the case was beyond the Command.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed the arrest on Sunday in Asaba, the state capital. He said the tragic incident occurred between June 26 and 27, 2025, in the Sapele area of the state.

According to Edafe, the suspect initially went into hiding after committing the crime but has since been tracked down and taken into custody.

“You may recall that between June 26 and 27, 2025, social media was flooded with reports about the mysterious murder of a lady named Excellence in Sapele, who was killed by her boyfriend, the father of her two children,” he said.

“For those demanding justice for Excellence, we want to inform you that the suspected killer is in custody, and we will ensure he is arraigned in court soon,” he added.

During interrogation, Obakpororo reportedly confessed to the crime, claiming he was under the influence of drugs at the time.

Obakpororo also confessed to being involved in Internet fraud (popularly known as Yahoo Yahoo) and expressed regret over killing the mother of his three- and two-year-old sons.

The Delta State Police Command assured the public that justice will be pursued diligently and the suspect will be charged in court without delay.

    Erosion ravages Delta community

Gully erosion has ravaged Obomkpa community in Aniocha North Local Government of Delta State.

Community leaders, indigenes and residents have appealed to the state government to address the menace.

President General of Obomkpa Progressive Union Worldwide (OPU), Comrade Emeka Bidokwu, who made the appeal on behalf of the community, said the erosion site had become a death trap, ‘’the consequence of which is better imagined than experienced.’’

He expressed dissatisfaction about the way and manner a firm had been mining coal in the area, thereby contributing to the damage of the constructed drains.

It was learnt that the erosion had led to the loss of properties, caused infrastructure damage, road closure, landslide, crop destruction and loss of livestock, among others.

The OPU boss said the resultant effect of the landslide and flooding on the road had weakened the bitumen pavement layers due to continuous contacts of water.

He said the state government had been magnanimous enough to provide social amenities and infrastructure in Obomkpa, currently being threatened by gully erosion, and appealed to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to come to the aid of residents of the community.

Other community residents, who spoke anonymously, echoed the OPU leader’s assertion and urged the government to help restore electricity to the community, as the erosion had affected power supply for over a month.

Isoko PGs, others pass vote of confidence in Tantita Security

    By Emmanuel Ogoigbe

The Isoko Patriots, comprising President Generals, stakeholders, and coordinators of oil pipeline surveillance in Delta State, have passed a resounding vote of confidence in Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited (TSSNL), condemning in strong terms recent calls for the cancellation of its contract.

At a meeting held at Opute Hall, Ozoro, in Isoko North Local Government Area, the coalition expressed deep concern over what it described as a coordinated smear campaign by criminal elements masquerading as ethnic agitators, aimed at discrediting Tantita’s achievements in securing oil pipelines across the Niger Delta region.

Reading the official position of the group, Chief Adonis Ubuwere, Chairman of the Isoko PGs Forum and President General of Irri Kingdom, warned that any attempt to truncate Tantita’s operations would amount to a direct threat to national economic stability and regional security.

He stated that since Tantita, chaired by High Chief Government Ekpemupolo with Chief Kestin Pondi as Managing Director, took over pipeline surveillance operations in 2022, illegal bunkering and oil theft in the Isoko region have virtually disappeared, with significant employment created for local youths.

“The Isoko Patriots, a coalition of young professionals committed to peace and prosperity, alert the Nigerian public and security agencies to a calculated campaign, allegedly sponsored by crude oil theft syndicates, to undermine Tantita’s mandate,” the statement declared.
